or you can create an offline paper wallet on an offline computer and then print it a few times and keep the private key copies safe somewhere in your safe or something like that

The answer is beyond a doubt, generating a privkey on a computer that has never touched the internet and never will. Then you send bitcoin to its public address. Unless BTC get cracked by a super mega computer, your bitcoin will be absolutely safe. A way of doing this is using the wallet armory. A way that doesn't deal with any third party is called the aforementioned paper wallet, but its not very convenient to use.

paper wallets, hardware wallets like trazor, ledgerwallet are good option
other option as suggested above might be saving you wallet data on USB stick and keep it safe

Other than physical wallets

Well if you don't want to use physical wallet then your bet are paper wallets. Make sure that your computer is not infected though. One of the drawbacks of the paper wallets is that they are hard to manipulate. Paper wallets are good if you will store your coins and not touch them longer periods of time.

Physical wallets like Trezor are because of this much more convenient because you can move your coins as you want and as many times you want!

Other than physical wallets, an offline computer that never has and never will be online using Bitcoin Armory would be very safe.

If your objective is to store bitcoin, the best way is to reinstall the operating system of a computer, download electrum and then go offline. Install electrum, write down the seed and copy a few bitcoin address generated. Keep the seed in a safe place and copy the list of addresses as a text file on a usb drive. Then format the whole hard drive. You can now send coins to those addresses.

Does anyone use paper?

Well you can do paper wallets, this is the insert put into most coins.  But without coin you get to do it yourself (I like to do my own as I don't trust something I did not generate with large sums of BTC.

If you don't like that look into other cold storage options.  The main word there is cold as you do not want it to be online or have internet access when not in use.  It just allows it to be more of a risk of getting virus or other bad things.

Last is hardware.  These are not cheap in many cases but things such as trezor are much more secure then a hot wallet.

I my opinion sending all your bitcoins to paper wallet and storing it there is the safest way to keep your bitcoins... Whenever i get ROI i send the returns to my paper wallet and sit back in chair heating up some cigars

if you use online wallet, you can try save your money on software wallet(multibit, electrum, etc)
no one is safe on the internet.

I use elctrum. has the best security and you can still use it with some work. best for storage in my opinion.

The wallet must have never been on a computer that has connections to the internet before. Doing so may result in your private key being compromised in the event that there is a virus infection.

Even though paper wallet are cheap and quite secure, I would say that an offline raspberry pi with electrum would work much better. For most cases, internet is required to download the UXTO informations. If you use electrum, you can download it on an online computer and transferring it to the offline computer to sign before broadcasting it on the online computer. Even so, no precautions can be made against weak RNG attacks, unless you review the entire code thoroughly and have plenty of knowledge.

Other than physical wallets

Coinbase, Circle, Xapo...seriously. I know others will say "you don't own your coins with those joints" but it's too easy to lose your coins or get hacked with an online wallet.

and how do you not get hacked in coinbase or other online 3rd party wallets? plus you don't own the coins.

There might easier ways now but Bitcoin armory X of Y paper wallets are the "easiest" to use while providing the highest protection.  For example spread 5 copies of a document around the world and you would only need 2 or 3 copies of that document to recreate your keys.  Even if your house floods or burns down as long as you can get the correct number of copies you're OK.

Electrum (https://electrum.org/), it's easy to use, cold wallet and the security features for your coins is enough to keep your coins safe.

No it doesn't. All you need is to make sure your computer is safe. If you use a computer that is only ever used for bitcoin transactions then there likely isn't going to be any issues.

You need to ensure that the keys don't sign the transaction on the same computer. It would not be safe as it would be exposed to an attacker all at once.

The problem is that you cannot make sure that your computer is truly safe without formatting it. Most antiviruses cannot detect every single virus that is in the wild, the best method is to format it. Also, most people would not have a computer that only does Bitcoin transaction and don't surf the web/

All of this above reminds me of the time before I got myself a hardware wallet. Non-stop paranoia, reformatting, checking and running anti-viruses and malware protections. It was hard to relax myself after I started using Trezor. :)

Offline. Put the wallet .dat files on a usb stick and keep them safe.

The USB Stick should be clean and free of viruses, or else it will be a mess for the user in case something bad happens (the data got corrupted/lost) to the USB stick. Also, a nice thing to do/consider is to have multiple copies of the wallet files in separate/different USB Sticks that are also free of viruses so that in case one got its data corrupted/lost, you will still have a copy of it.

Hardware wallets are best and modern idea of securing bitcoins. But not viable for everybody when we consider the cost needed for buying it.
A Password protection to encrypt your wallet is more than enough way to secure our bitcoins.

And you could keep a PDF of paper wallet on usb stick.  Having a second copy is highly recommended as sometimes usb sticks crap out.

But you could encrypt the entire USB stick.  With that and storing in safe place you would be pretty secure.

Password protections can secure yourself from primary physical hacking (Ie. having physical access of your computer). If you have a virus, it could record your password and spend your Bitcoins. A paper wallet would do the job of keeping your Bitcoins just fine.

Just be careful as this is a "hot" wallet.   If you are storing many coins everything will highly recommend a cold wallet.  Just a lot more secure as it's not connected to internet always.

The thought is you cant hack into something that is not connected online, which is a pretty good general idea.   If you are using blockchain as a hot wallet make sure to use 2FA.   It will add just a little extra security.

Lol thats like putting your sheep in the lion's mouth to "safeguard it"

No you cannot trust deposit boxes with bitcoin, too risky. In Greece they dont let you even to your deposit boxes, not to mention about atm being offline and banks not giving out money.

Better buy a safe for 2000-3000$ if you have like 100,000$ worth of bitcoin or some significant amount atleast.

Safest way to save bitcoins
1. Save in many address.
2. Encrypt your wallet
3. The password should be more than 20 char, must be mix of digits with Upper and lower case
4. Wallet need to be disconnected from internet. Cold storage.
5. May use watch-only option or explorer to see growing of your balances.

For Hot wallet,
a. Skip the 4th bullet-in.
b. Use it along with latest version of wallet/browser and a recommended anti-virus.

You can buy a good safe for much cheaper.   I would say in high hundreds you can get one that does pretty well, main thing is get one that is heavy as it is hard to carry out.   In my highschool day's I worked somewhere that sold gun safes.... i can tell you it will take a team to move those things if you buy quality.   But you can spend thousands and get super high quality (some are so heavy you have to put extra construction under the floor so it does not sag).

But not all are like Greece.  In the US it's pretty likely in the foreseeable future a safety deposit box is safe.  If your countries credit starts to go down a lot... downgraded like greece was being ... go get it out there are signs before it get's that bad.

the safest way i found is to have a small amount on a hotwallet as a trap, you can put 0.01, just to know that your desktop is not infected, and a standard usb with the other big amount

if they steal you that tiny amount you know you're ifnected and you go ahead and do a secure erase, it's working great for me

placing anything in safety deposit box is different than putting your money in the bank. because bank can have access to the money you put in your account so they can block or limit it but since they don't have access to your safety deposit box they can not do anything about it.
besides as long as you can make a secure cold storage on your own and "free" I think paying any money for any sort of wallet is a waste of money.

Is paper wallet considered as a physical wallet?
If no, then you can save it as a digital file as a pdf or as jpg image.
On that page there are all necessary information to receive and spend your bitcoins.

A paper wallet is normally printed on a piece off paper.  Sometimes stuck in physical coins.   Or you can just store in safe place.

But you could print a PDF or other version and store it as a digital file.  You would just have to be careful where you keep it.  I would do a usb stick or two if you choose this route.  I would not store on anything that is online or regular computer.

I`d just chain the safe to the wall or some solid thing then it's immovable, or better yet, built it inside the wall and hide it behind a picture like in the movies.

I strongly disagree, unfortunately, anything stored in the bank is the banks property as you loan them out and they will "promise" it to pay it back. When a bank goes bankrupt, in the process of liquidation , it will sell all assets (including your deposit boxes) to pay down the liabilities.

Sorry but i am just not taking that risk. If you really want a safety box, then go with an independent firm that offers this service, but not with a bank.

To all people who said to put wallet.dat in a USB stick, you are wrong
if the USB stick get infected by a virus, the virus might delete (or corrupte) wallet.dat file
so I recommend burning in into a CD using a burn studio to deny viruses from doing anything to the file

But the USB stick would have to get infected from something.  So if the USB get's infected your computer is infected and the USB stick was infected second.

So no matter what usb stick or cd.  The infected computer could compromise the wallet.dat (or other files).  When they are being loaded on computer.   This is why you really should only use it with a clean computer.  If you use one that you surf or worse torrent with there is a bigger chance of it being infected.

If a USB stick is unpluged and cold storage it cannot be hacked unless host computer is compromised when it plugs in.

If you wanna hold the wallet for long term (and its a deterministic waller), then you burn it into a CD to avoid cryptolocker and other shit.

If you use the wallet frequently then an USB is good, but always have multiple backups in case of a cryptolocker infection.

The problem remains though if you have an infected computer and access a CD or USB it can get the information from when you access it, with a security breach.  So even though a CD cannot be written to again (assuming used a regular cd).   If you get your wallet.dat off cd and use it the virus/malware could have accessed it.

The only way CD or USB data remains safe is if host computer is not infected.  If it's infected either one of the ways could possibly lose the file to the security problem.

I agree but atleast it keep the data untouched. A cryptolocker would be fatal on the other hand. Even if they dont get your money, they can make sure that you dont get it either.

So thats why everybody should have atleast 2-3 CD backups with a wallet to avoid this disaster.

Same could be said is you should have one or two backups of USB sticks.  They are not expensive at all (get a decent brand to prevent crapping out).  But if you use just one and others are backup if it did get a virus that locked data you could switch computers and usb.

USB drives can handle more extreme environment's then CD's in most cases.  They also have some that are extra resistant to elements.

But I think if computer is compromised CD or USB drive you could be screwed if it's looking for wallet.dat or other files associated with USB.

Use old PC to store bitcoin, because new PC can have firmware rewrittable virus on it, that boots directly before the OS and could leak info:

The safest way to store your bitcoin is to send all of them to paper wallet.

hahaha this suks!

Try to use paper or brain wallets. Each time you do a transaction, move all your bitcoin to a new address. So paper wallets might be the best choice, IMO.

The safest way is to how you can make your any storage safe. Even you are using literally a safe storage to store your bitcoin without your self safety precautions your coins are still vulnerable.

Paper wallets are okay as long as it is random enough. Moving all of them to a new address does reduce the possibility of getting your coins stolen when you broadcast a transaction due to weak RNG but I can't see a real advantage if you're using a truly random generator like bitaddress.org. Brainwallet is known to have a vulnerability which allows a fast bruteforce of the private key.

So pick yourself a random address and private at a random page on directory.io but, this too vulnerable if system got installed back doors. :(

Well having more that 2-3 backups is more than recommended.
Sorting sensitive data in online platforms like computer, tabler or phones is not good.
As they can be attacked by any virus/getting corrupted or maybe will not work when you need.

Sorry but you are completely wrong. Online wallets are the worst way to store your bitcoins. As you don't have complete control over your money and you trust a third party to store your money. What if the get hacked, go bankrupt or something third? Well, you will lose your money.

i don't like how with coinbase you're 100% tracked, if you hold something, there and also i suspect there are fee for retiring your fund, better to stick with local wallet dunno why people can't handle them

bitcoin was meant for to be used by you only, not by a third party also...

The tracked part does not bother me as I do nothing with it worth hiding.  They would be bored to tears with mine.  But most of mine comes from mining... so really it's pretty good as far as not being tracked, I could mine into any BTC address an start a wallet.

A cold wallet still beats coinbase I think. But coinbase is a good one no doubt about it.  But paper wallet and hardware wallet I still think are the winners.

Even it doesn't bother you, coinbase or government would be curious if you keep a lot of bitcoin there
I heard few people got their bitcoin's locked by coinbase because they failed to answer few question :(

And, of course cold wallet is better than coinbase vault. we don't know really know details on how they keep our bitcoin, so it could be bad.
Hardware wallet would be best option, even if it's a bit expensive

Have you hear of one where they don't give coins to person though?  I have heard of canceling account, but not taking coins from you.

It's pretty common if you try to buy on coinbase and sell on localbitcoin if you go direct there is a decent amount of ban.  This is as they follow the KYC laws and don't want to help money laundering so cant really fault them to much.

paper wallet is the best option if you ask me. but it is safe as long as you create it on a safe PC with a safe code (app).
but if you want to be able to spend those cold stored bitcoins without having to sweep the paper wallet, you should use a wallet like electrum on an offline PC.

Honestly you are just way to worried about it if your not doing something illegal.  If doing something illegal... yes worry for sure.

But with legal use I don't see some huge operation tracking my info and seeing me spend BTC.  And again if there is one ... they are wasting their time on me since no illegal stuff so I'm not worried.

Offline. Put the wallet .dat files on a usb stick and keep them safe.

Encrypt the wallet.dat, and then put it on a usb stick.

It helps if you also rename it. Possibly if the .dat doesnt destroy the filesystem, then even put a .txt extension, but not recommended.

An even safer way is to encode the content of the wallet.dat, into a BMP or JPEG file, and keep it in image format, nobody will look after that.

Hardware wallets are usually designed to resist virus attacks and it wouldn't have high risk of it being compromised. Secure internet connection isn't mandatory as your private key is never broadcast to the internet. The only thing that is downloaded to your hardware wallet is the UXTO info and a signed transaction would be sent. There is close to 0 risk of it getting compromised due to a insecure internet connection (at least in trezor). Even for updates, there is a signature that it must match for the device to accept the upgrade. (CMIIW)

USB sticks are prone to failure. Btw, it is alright to rename it to any format.

Use multiple ones, 1 usb costs about 3-4$ here. You can easily buy 10 of them and then put them in a faraday box to shield against EMP charges.

I dont know about renaming, certain formats have different encoding and it might fuck up the data. Like if you rename a .mp3 to .txt, and then back to .mp3 it wont work anymore.

On USB or Paper wallet, or any back up have more then 1.  If you just have one and it has something wrong... single point of failure so very bad.

Multiple backup's and you can also do saving on USB and paper wallet.  So you can combine multiple.  And just make sure to store in safe place,  preferably 2 safe places. As you don't want 1 point of failure.

even if the usb will fail, there are, if i'm not mistaken, tool to recover the data inside it

some advance software can do it, or you need to ask for a technician, just don't tell him what you want to recover  ;D

Wallet.dat files require that the future program be compatible reading the file and the file not be corrupted.  For short term this might be viable but anything spanning years I would recommend going back to rudimentary printing the keys on paper and dispersing them.  I prefer X of Y paper copies of my keys like the kind made by Armoury.

Coinbase (http://www.coinbase.com/join/527cac113ce11bc79200000e) is great for people who already realize that it's futile to avoid being tracked in large cities where cameras are watching you 24/7 and phones are constantly dialing home. Do they really care I used a restroom in a Applebees on Friday?  :D

The higher the safety from failure the higher the risk of detection. 1 kind of safety will summon other kinds of risks.

If you have 1 usb and its hidden, but it fails, then its game over.

If you have 2 usb, but 1 gets stolen and the other dont, then its also game over.

Like in real life, your wallet must be secured. Bitcoin makes it possible to transfer value anywhere in a very easy way and it allows you to be in control of your money. Such great features also come with great security concerns. At the same time, Bitcoin can provide very high levels of security if used correctly. Always remember that it is your responsibility to adopt good practices in order to protect your money .
You should be wary of any service designed to store your money online. Many exchanges and online wallets suffered from security breaches in the past and such services generally still do not provide enough insurance and security to be used to store money like a bank. Accordingly, you might want to use other types of Bitcoin wallets. Otherwise, you should choose such services very carefully. Additionally, using two-factor authentication is recommended.
A Bitcoin wallet is like a wallet with cash. If you wouldn't keep a thousand dollars in your pocket, you might want to have the same consideration for your Bitcoin wallet. In general, it is a good practice to keep only small amounts of bitcoins on your computer, mobile, or server for everyday uses and to keep the remaining part of your funds in a safer environment.
Stored in a safe place, a backup of your wallet can protect you against computer failures and many human mistakes. It can also allow you to recover your wallet after your mobile or computer was stolen if you keep your wallet encrypted.
Some wallets use many hidden private keys internally. If you only have a backup of the private keys for your visible Bitcoin addresses, you might not be able to recover a great part of your funds with your backup.
Any backup that is stored online is highly vulnerable to theft. Even a computer that is connected to the Internet is vulnerable to malicious software. As such, encrypting any backup that is exposed to the network is a good security practice.
Single points of failure are bad for security. If your backup is not dependent of a single location, it is less likely that any bad event will prevent you to recover your wallet. You might also want to consider using different medias like USB keys, papers and CDs

If you have one with a large holding it is smart to have a copy in a bank security box.  Say tornado or natural disaster the bank vault is still there where a home (unless safe room) might not be.

Home concealed where no one finds or safe is good if you get fire safe as you have one that is resistant to fire.  Everyone thinks different on this.

Depends on your holdings. 99 dollars to secure thousands or more.... not really sounding so bad.  But if you have 1-2 BTC it is looking like a big portion of your money.

So hardware is not for all.  The good thing is paper wallets you can do for pretty much free and are useful at any level of holding.

There is no "believing".  Hardware most likely is easiest to use and be safe.

But a cold paper wallet is safest way, assuming done right.  People can mess up doing it though if infected or something else bad on PC or Printer when they make it.  But cold paper wallet I think is safe to say safest, if done right.

no too expensive, and they don't offer a better security than storing in a multiple cheap usb, and then close those in a safe box, that is shielded against mmagnetism or other kind of wave to prevent some form of hacking

Bitcoin wallets store the private keys that
you need to access a bitcoin address and
spend your funds.

They come in different
forms, designed for different types of device.

You can even use paper storage to avoid
having them on a computer at all. Of course,
it is very important to secure and back up

Store you wallet files into safe or go for paper wallets...

Paper wallets should really be stored in a fireproof safe.  If your doing paper wallets they are good against hacking, not against elements.

Even a bank security box is very good tool to use to store paper, or usb wallets.

Just a quick question Sir. What if paper wallet gone or misplaced? Or let's say it burned to fire accidentally.

What method does a holder can do to retrieve it? Or is multiple paper wallet with the same private key are possible? lol.

I'm using online wallet all the time ( until now ) As I heard that online wallet is worrying me.
I'm wonder what the easiest offline wallet that I can learn with fast so I can move some of my storage from online into offline wallet
There are hardware wallets which are secure but at the same time overly expensive. You can install raspbian on a raspberry pi and use electrum as a software wallet. Even though many wallets offer offline features, electrum IMO, is the most convenient one with offline signing.

To spend your Bitcoin, you definitely need the private key. Without it, your coins are as well as gone. You should keep multiple copies of it at different geographical places if possible.

Has anyone tried using Trezor? been tempted to buy one but i don't know if it's any good than using online wallet.

I would just go with a Ledger Nano instead. Very affordable and secure in my opinion. Much cheaper than a Trezor too https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/1-ledger-nano

I am collecting my bitcoin to buy a Ledger hardware wallet.
It is pretty same if we compare the features with Trezor.
It's much cheaper and more people can afford the Ledger price.

That is still pricey. I went to mycelium's website and they offer a similar product but it is referred to as a paper wallet. How is ledger and the usb from mycelium different? Was looking at trezor but was to much money then had interest in ledger now looking at mycelium as an alternative.

Well, i'd say you put your wallet.dat files onto a hard drive, and then stick it into a bank vault. Give proof of how much bitcoin is in the hard drive, and if your hard drive gets corrupted, you can sue the bank.

Ledger is basically a hardware wallet which you can plug into your computer to make payments without the risk of it getting hacked. Mycelium USB is a paper wallet generator which you can plug into your printer to print out paper wallet with secure entropy. With paper wallet, you need a additional secure device to scan the Qr code of private key and spend it.

there is no need to do this, as long as you use it only for that bitcoin client, otherwise how can you do a spending without the net?

It isn't a perfect idea at the start. If you generate a Bitcoin Wallet while it is connected to internet, a malware can potentially send the private key to he rogue attacker. I would off the internet first and generate a wallet to make it more perfect. I believe you have got the idea wrong. You don't have to be connected to the internet to construct a transaction or sign it. You can download the TX info from another computer and sign it using the offline Bitcoin Core and it can be broadcasted using the online computer.

What will bank do with you hdd, i don't think they will touch it,
As long as you sent to them as more secure environment.
I think that you have to have more than 2-3 copies (backups)

uhm, i'm talking about a fresh new OS installation, there is no malware, how can a malware can ever be installed on a fresh ssd with a fresh new OS, impossible

the system is 100% secure, i have a primarily example of this, with my machine, which was never violated, and tons of private keys passed from here

Thanks for sharing I'm not the most artsy person.  But I found this to be very interesting.  I would not put the BTC logo on it.

But people seeing it depending on paint might suspect paper weight or something.  Most will not think a paper wallet is inside of it.  I would do a little more on protection of paper in it in case it leaks when making or something bad.

The system isn't exactly 100% secure. There is still a loophole there. Some rootkits (http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/hacking-team-uses-uefi-bios-rootkit-to-keep-rcs-9-agent-in-target-systems/) are directly implanted into the bios and it could be quite dangerous. Also, some OS are closed sourced and it would be impossible to check for any vulnerabilities or backdoors. If there is a zero day vulnerability, it would be affected if it is connected to the internet.

I have not used any hardware wallets so far. This is because of fear of using new technology for my hard earned bitcoins and secondarily the cost of hardware wallets. May be after your recommendation I will change my opinions and will look for it.

I would definitely go for it since they are opensourced, this means that they are fully transparent and can be trustable. Buying the wallet would be justifiable if I am in control of a lot of Bitcoin and they are very precious to me. If not, paper wallet would work just fine.

I do understand the concern tough... I trust the firmware that's on the HW wallet, like you said, it's opensourced.... BUT, i don't trust the fact that when i do something wrong, i could potentially lose all my coins...

impossible my machine was new 100%, from motherboard to cpu to vga to anything, you're telling me that new pieces of HW are sold with rootkit inside it

this is must be the worst argument i've heard ever

and the article is talking about an attack, which mean that the user installed something, again this is not what iw as taling about

The intruder gets access to the target computer, yes how? if you let it take your computer it's obvious that you deserve to be hacked...

I do not know much about hardware wallets. Hardware wallet are dedicated USB devices that can hold private keys electronically and facilitate payments. It is being used by those that did not trust other storage. But I believe in blockchain. So I think I do not need one right now.

I hope you don't regret one day that you believed on blockchain.

Veterans here already suggested here not to use such web based wallets as they are not that secured. Well if you don't want to store your coins on a hardware wallets, then why not try software based ones? Specifically those desktop wallets which is way more secured than web based ones.

The safest way is always "cold storage" which means either on paper (and you put that son of a bitch in a lock or something like that, it mustn't burn) Or on a laptop not connected to the internet.

But I always wondered, what happens if your laptop dies? You just lost your btc?
