Title: How many bitcoin address you have right now? why you have more than one?
Post by: mobnepal on November 29, 2015, 10:25:48 AM
When whatching some videos about bitcoin i came to know there is lots of address can be made for bitcoin almost unlimited. So creating many addresses doesn't seem to affect bitcoin network.

I have around 3 address 2 of those are cold wallet address and 1 main everyday hot wallet. I have Cold wallet to store in safer place and stop me from spending madly in gamblings.

How much bitcoin address do you have and why you have to create more than one address?

>100. Because I can not imagine how you keep track of things with just a single address. For every deal (except low value) I generate a new address and usually for long term deal (e.g. sig campaigns) a new address monthly. When I see an incoming payment on the address I labeled with "vanitygen Quickseller x 20" I know who paid me for what. How do you do this with just a single address?

The other thing is, with the high number of addresses its difficult for someone to know how much bitcoin I have in total. If you just have a few its pretty easy to find them.

I use Electrum: good thing is it keeps track of my addresses otherwise I would be doomed!  ;D
Everytime I go for new transaction he uses a new address, which is a good thing. And I don't have to worry about change addresses. With core I lost some bits because of the change. I did not know what it was: but now I know and I prefere to use Electrum wallet.

I have 3 hot wallet/address, >30 addresses for various services, 10 for loans, 1 cold storage. With more than one Bitcoin addresses, there are more privacy and it is easier to see the purpose of the transactions since they're all labeled. I currently don't use HD wallet yet, might do so in the future. I found it easier to not use change address as it's rather confusing.

I have maybe 10 or more, I use more than one because I think it would be hard to track for my own safe.

There are some attacks made easier if you knew the public key for an address. The public key only gets revealed after you send coins from an address, so it's safer not to reuse an old address after you have sent coins from it. I try to use a new address each time I send coins, and I only keep what I intend to spend in an address, so I have loads of addresses with small amounts in.

Quote
Established security best practices discourage address re-use because when Monica sends you the restaurant bill, she reveals the public key for the last-sent-to address; before that, the world knew only the address (a hash of the public key) and would have had to perform a pre-image attack to find the public key. While it’s pretty unlikely, ECDSA is relatively new and could be found to be weak; private keys may somehow be found to be easily derived from public ones, exposing any unspent coins where the public key is known.

Re-using addresses also probably increased the losses suffered via the Android SecureRandom bug, since exploiting it required seeing two transactions with the same last-sent-to and the same r values.

The discoverers of the OpenSSL ECDSA “FLUSH+RELOAD” attack estimated that under the right conditions they could recover a private key by observing as few as 200 signatures (in Bitcoin’s case, typical transactions) made with it.

Hopefully those are the last bugs we’ll see related to re-use, but we can’t be sure.

Since it’s Monica’s money at stake here, the decision on whether these threats are significant should be up to her.

i think there is some confusion here, some users think you're talking about wallet, other address

i have 3 wallet, the two for cold storage have only two three address, the hot wallet instead has many i didn't count them, but i create every once in a while, if i move big funds

Far over 1000 because re-using addresses is bad practice for financial privacy and security.

For some strange reason many people make the mistake of thinking of a bitcoin address as an account number. It is not.  It doesn't behave anything like an account.  Treating it that way only leads to more confusion for the poor fools that make that mistake.

A bitcoin address is an invoice number.  It's a way to keep track of a specific payment request.  Therefore, it doesn't make any sense to re-use bitcoin addresses. I use a new address for every transaction, so by now I probably have several hundred bitcoin addresses.

I have way more than just 1 Address..
Just due to the fact that i need at least 5 to 6 to sperate different Incomes and keep an eye on everything that joins or leaves my Wallet.
Of course this would still be possible with only 1 address..
But this way its more organized.
At this moment i have like 10 Addresses on my Desktop and about 7 on my Mobile Wallet.

I have like 6 blockchain.info addresses which i rarely use it, have like ~20 in coinbase, used/tested then deleted 2 in electrum, 2 in mycelium, 2 or 3 in bitcoin wallet for Android, didn't create many btc address because I don't have many transactions for the moment so i know from where i got my payments and where i spent it..

I don't think it is strange at all, people are used to thinking in account number or "payment destination" terms.

Indeed if you think about the invoice number example, whilst the invoice number is unique to the request for payment, it is not where you send the payment, that is the account number.  And really the Bitcoin address does work more like an account number since you can send several payments to the same address and they go to the same "destination".

Thinking further if one were to be paid one's monthly salary in Bitcoin, who would that work in practice in the new address fo every transaction model?  Do you need to give your employer a new address every month?  And they need to re-schedule the payment run every month?

I think it must be around 3000 now. And yes, the previous posters are right. You should not reuse addresses. Better have them unique for one transaction.

The simplest reason is... why would you let everyone look into your wallet and let them know everything you dealt with, where you are invested, that you gambled or tipped cammodels on a sex site? But if your addresses can be connected then you reveal more infos about you than you would wish.

The risk still is there when you not reuse addresses, for example with change addresses since when you send a payment and you send from 2 input addresses than those 2 addresses are connected too, together with all transactions these two addresses had.

One has to think about that carefully.

Probably more than 1000. It's suggested that you use different address for every transaction. Even you have big BTC in one of your addresses, when you use it change is coming to your newly generated change address. That's for security purpose.

I have control of more than ten addresses. Back before I use Mycelium as my wallet I used MultiBit. The software tell us to create multiple addresses to receive money from different people. So I created multiple addresses to receive money from different faucets. I quit Bitcoin after knowing faucets will not make me 1 USD easily. Even though I quit, I did not uninstall MultiBit.

When I came back in October last year, I have an Android phone. So I checked Bitcoin.org for some Android based wallet. I am fond of the design Mycelium have. So I uses it. I have only a few wallets in my Mycelium software. One being my old address and another one being my vanity address. I also have control of some vanity address private key on my computer such as 1Bit, 1Face and many others.

I had around 11.

I use to run a small website where I did tips on getting started with bitcoin; "walkthroughs", BTC giveaways, links to faucets, and many other things. After that got going I found this site where I started doing daily raffles and TwitterGames. Gave away probably around BTC12 in BTC0.1 and BTC0.01 increments with some larger prizes occasionally. Some of that was from support from this great community by means of donations which became necessary after the raffles and games got larger. I needed those multiple address to keep track of various "accounts" for the site and the games I did on here; donations in, prizes out, main wallet, cold storage, and some wallets for other ventures. It was great and I met some really awesome people who wouldn't have been able to get into bitcoin without the small (then small) raffles and information. I had to stop doing the site when life got in the way; I moved, then school, a job, a girlfriend etc. It was so cool though that people on here donated/helped out to keep the raffles going and get newbies up to speed. Unbelievably good times. This forum does some real good for the community. I want to bring my small part of it back, albeit in much smaller amounts now that BTC is worth way more than $45 a coin. I'm not able to do this right now. Maybe after I sell a few bitcoin related things I'll be able to reach that goal.

Anyway, thats my story, and if tl;dr I needed multiple addresses for organization purposes.

Thousands? And thats what everyone should have. At least if securing your BTC is your priority.

Some people like to have one receiving address, but HD wallets are much more secure and there's not really a reason to not use one different address for every receiving transactions.

HD wallets aren't more secure than regular wallets. They do prevent losses by making wallets do one time backup but if someone gets the key, all your addresses generated from that will be compromised. Wallets like Bitcoin Core only pregenerate 100 address so even if someone gets the old backup with your 100 used key, they can't do much.

HD Wallets are more secure in the way they generate the next address, and the next. It solve the problem of Hierarchical vs Deterministic method of seed and sequence. As long as you keep the master key, you can regenerate all the addresses after that so losing your wallet.dat is not a problem, like it is with non HD wallets.

It also has other useful to negligible benefits.

I like the fact that it helps making the transactions you do no related to one another. I appreciate the fact some exchanges has integrated this into automatically changing the receiving address as well.

This also help contribute to security. :)

I think, I must have over 150 addresses to date... I create a new address for every new service I use and I test all
wallets online, with a unique address. How can you evaluate a service or a wallet provider, if you have not tried all of
them. I also created 100's of paper wallets and then destroyed the computer it was created on.

I also use some honey pot addresses, to trigger traps on my desktops. {unprotected addresses with small amounts of coins}  ;D

I think I only have a total of 9 addresses to my name, and most of them are empty if I remember correctly.

I have more than one as a means of dividing up large amounts of coins I used to have, but I don't particularly have large stores behind me right now, so I leave my remaining $.70 in a single account.

I want to try out one of my paper wallets, but that can wait.

In terms of security, both of them generate the private key without additional benefits to the security, only to the convenience of backing up the seed once and only. If someone has access to your seed, you would get all your coins hacked. With Bitcoin Core and other non HD wallets, they can't possibly get the whole list of address the user is using if they get an older backup.

Currently, the main use is for privacy and labeling. There is no risk of compromising the private key even if it has been used many times, till quantum computing comes out. Just look at satoshidice. As long as the RNG is not weak when generating transaction or private key. Exchange use different address to credit the correct account.

Bitcoin is NOT anonymous (http://www.bitcoinisnotanonymous.com/). So if you have 2 or 3 address you are doing it wrong. For each transaction, ideally one should have new address.

Most are pre generated by Electrum, and 2 are imported private keys from my old qt wallet.
Some address I use for one time deals, and some of them are "public", like the one in my profile, so people know that this is me.

For now I just have 3 might be adding more to this in the future

I don't need that many for now seeing as I don't own that many bitcoins right now.

Started with one address, but now I use more to have better track from where the coins come. It is easy to use many addresses with a wallet, so there is little reason to have just one address.

You can label your addresses with almost every client that I know of. Blockchain.info is a service which allows users to publicly display the names attached to the address. It isn't accurate at times since anyone can use satoshi nakamoto as the name as long as they make a website with the name and address with it.

I only have 2 addresses. 1 if them is my cold wallet, where I store most of my bitcoin, which is around 10 bitcoin. I also have another wallet, a web wallet where I keep some 'extra change' so I can do stuff like shop and gamble, very conveniently.

Out of those 20 wallets he has, I bet that more than half of them aren't online wallets. Blockchain is also pretty unreliable, with all its crashing and security issues. I prefer Coinbase as it is easier and safer to use. They also pay the miners fees for your first 1000 transactions.

If you are using Coinbase to store your coins, most likely you'll have more than 1 BTC address as Coinbase generates new BTC address for every transaction. I think having 2-3 BTC address is enough. I have 2 BTC address, 1 from Coinbase and 1 from Blockchain

How much bitcoin address do you have and why you have to create more than one address?
They say it was said by Satoshi to "use the address once and discard it " ,other than that it is much difficult for people to track you and you could keep track of all the deals you have ever done (by labeling the address) if you create a new address per transaction.
I got around 400~ maybe.

I do not know how people are managing many bitcoin addresses. I have created 10 addresses using multibit, but 7 of them still unused. I do receive facuet payments and my signature campaign payments are all in one address and I could not find any advantages of using many addresses.

I have maybe 10 or more, I use more than one because I think it would be hard to track for my own safe.

Why do people need so many bitcoin addresses? Like isn't 10 addresses a bit much. Just use 1 or 2 as your cold wallet and then another 1 to keep your change in that you can use for gambling, trading and ask that kind of stuff.

there is also another reason why they are useful, because if your wallet get stolen, and then you create another address, this new address will not be in the hacker wallet, so you can safely send funds there again, without creating a new wallet

Anonymity wouldn't be achieved if you don't use a wallet like Bitcoin Core which allows users to select inputs. If the wallet doesn't allow, the address could be spend linked together.

It would depend on what wallet type it is. For HD wallets, the address generated are predictable and hence a new seed would be required.

I find it confusing if I were to use one address for example loans. It would be hard to tell who repaid. Hence, I create 10 addresses and assign them to different loans.

I guess I have around 30 wallets in use right now, of which around 20 wallets are to store my cold wallet coins. I like to spread my coins into plenty of addresses to make it difficult for any one to know how much coins I exactly have. That's the main reason.

...So creating many addresses doesn't seem to affect bitcoin network...
I think you do not "create" bitcoin addresses... They already exist.

How many bitcoin address you have right now? why you have more than one?
I have four addresses:

1 for everyday, normal (re)use. The most active address.
1 for storing bitcoins for specific purpose.
1 for storing bitcoin for another specific purpose.
1 for storing bitcoin for another specific purpose, in "cold storage".

And that is how I organize my bitcoins.

I hate having my bitcoins in some "wallet.dat" file and having to use a different address every time as many suggest. This I'll never do, it is simply annoying.

Right, every bitcoin address already exists.  It's simply that a keypair (private key, public key) combination is found. Because it's impossible to guess a private key, it's said that a person 'owns' the bitcoins.

If someone does hack your wallet, all your addresses would also get hacked if you placed them altogether. It's 2015, is there anyone still not having a backup to their private key? There is no risk from hacking even if you reuse the address right now, it is only about the privacy.

Title: Re: How many bitcoin address you have right now? why you have more than one?

The other thing is, with the high number of addresses its difficult for someone to know how much bitcoin I have in total. If you just have a few its pretty easy to find them.
To solve this problem you should use a wallet program that keeps track of the "balance" of each of your addresses. A deterministic wallet is going to be the best solution for this (I like electrum) however, non-deterministic wallets will allow you to pre-generate addresses whose private keys you can save (and backup) prior to using. I would actually recommend against generating a new private key at the time you need a new address because best security practices say that you should have multiple backups of your private key or seed (you should have at least 3) in multiple locations (at least two) and it is difficult to do this at the time you need someone to send you BTC (presumably they will send the BTC as soon as they receive the address to send to).

I recently had to create/generate a new electrum wallet because my previous one was having performance issues due to the number of transactions associated with my xpubkey and the number of addresses that electrum was mum monitoring and it was difficult to get electrum to sync and needed to restart electrum almost every time I received a tx. It was actually pretty scary having to generate a new electrum seed and backing up the seed, it is something that I would personally like to avoid as much as possible.

to answer the question in the OP, between the three electrum wallets, two blockchain.info wallets, one multibit wallet and one armory wallet, I would estimate that I have well in excess of 1,000 addresses that have received at least one transaction and whose private key I control. If you were to add all the coinbase/bitfinex addresses that have received at least one transaction and that I would receive credit for BTC for any transaction sent to those addresses then the number could potentially increase to closer to 2,000 but I think that might be a bit of a stretch (I estimate that the number that includes exchange addresses would be under 1,500).

I have made a total of 20 or so addresses just for the sake of jumbling and rumbling my balance on different addresses, so as to minimize the 'taint' it leaves on the blockchain. At first I don't get why the bitcoin wiki advised not to use the same wallet over and over again, but as time passed by, I realized that it is indeed a much safer approach on keeping your balance compared to just one.

It is like my salary account. the second one is so special, I use it only on the matters to do with investment. Well above 50. For every new transaction from a new person, I make a new little wallet with their name on it. This is so they can reuse that address, and I can keep track of my transactions. If only my bitcoin wallet allowed me to label transactions sent to me. If I only had one wallet address, id have to keep up with ~50 txes a day. Hell no.

lol I just know, if you have only 1 address, its very risky and not safe  ::)

Well, having one address doesn't mean it isn't safe, it just means that if anything happens to that one address that it would affect his entire wallet. If he knows what he is doing, one address will be all he'll need. People just suggest multiple addresses for the partially increased anonymity and the ability to divide your funds among the wallets to prevent you from losing all of your funds if something happens. You can have 5 addresses on one hard drive and if the hard drive gets corrupted or is damaged, that's the end of the entire set of funds.

Have 3 currently, one is my main address I use to send and receive payments, another is a secondary address for micro earnings, and the last one I deposit all my earnings into it, where I store it there, never to be touched again. :)

I don't like to have many addresses, especially using a new address every time. I don't really see anonymity as an importance, so I'm fine with just using a main address for my funds.

It's pretty much called a vanity address. You could even brute force millions of addresses  per minute to find the address that suits you.

You can read more about it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0)

I have like 3 addresses total.

Unlimited. I use different addresses for different places. Satoshi want us to use different addresses for every transaction. It's the nature of Bitcoin. There are infinite Bitcoin addresses, why use only a dozen?

I can't even count the amount of addresses i have. In 2011 i first installed bitcoin client, and i found it interesting that you could create countless amounts of addresses - so i
did just that. It had no worth to it, it was just a bunch of empty addresses. Don't know why i wanted to have more than one, probably just to differentiate and monitor different deposits more easily i guess.

cheers

If I count every single address that has funds on it, I'd say that I have around 20 addresses. I don't have so many to don't be tracked (I don't care if people know how much I own) but because I like to have a defined address for a defined purpose.

I have some of them ofc, you know 1 for "daily things" and the rest to try to keep safe some of my satoshis  ;)

Btw i´m not counting here all those from exchanges etc etc, so why i have more than 1? so simply, because i think that is really needed, well maybe you dont need to have 3k of address but at least few of them for different purposes are needed IMHO.

I have like 3 in different systems but my main one is from Xapo as of today and we all know they use dynamic ones so I don't really have access to it if I wanted to.

I recently have sent micro earnings directly to betting site address to avoid dealing with all the hassle back and forth. It's not much of course but I bet some and see if I hit a jackpot once in a while hehe.

At least 50.  I use multiple services for different reasons, and have always labeled addresses based on where they are deposited from.  I keep certain mining addresses on one wallet for tax purposes, and I have addresses for cold storage as well as exchange addresses.

3 Addresses, Just because it's very easy to make more than one, no specific reason for having more than one though.

Oh there is. Or would you place a list with all your transactions at the door of your flat so that everyone can read everywhere where you sent money to or received money from? Allowing that different bitcoin addresses are connectable leads to you letting everyone know where you are involved. If you tipped some cammodels, you took part in ponzies or whatever. It could be seen relatively easy.

Check out walletexplorer.com. They try to find out which addresses belong to which website and wallet. Maybe you already can find more about you than you thought.

If you only receie payments from the same source then it would not make a big difference. But handling many addresses is not hard. You would be able to lable each address with the actual trade that happened. And you don't need to care about old addresses anymore.

Ignore bitcoin addresses. Let the wallet worry about them. Think of a bitcoin address as an invoice number. Don't think of it as something like a phone number.
In my opinion:
Wallets just make things more complicated, it just adds more complexity and dependence.

You suggest I keep all my bitcoins "randomly" distributed between thousands of addresses?! No, thanks!

I'd just keep them all in 1 address and "spend<->receive" forever. It is just much simpler.

End of opinion.

Here is some useful basic information:

Ignore bitcoin addresses. Let the wallet worry about them. Think of a bitcoin address as an invoice number. Don't think of it as something like a phone number.

You can do this, but only if you don't care about anonymity at all. Because handling addresses that way, maybe even with using change addresses, will lead to all of your transactions connectable. Try walletexplorer.com and see what you find about your addresses. In case you use your wallet the way you suggested.

Check the public addresses that are known to be connected to your userame and see what informations you find about your wallet and the financial connections you have.

Nobody says you should let the wallet do it randomly. I would say disable change addresses first, they are a tool to connect all your bitcoin addresses in your wallet and so a tool for losing anonymity. Then everytime you send funds, decide on your own from which addresses the coins should be taken from. Then you can decide if addresses can or should not be connected.

At the end you don't have a business and a private bank account. Not one account where you let all transactions go through. It simply becomes cluttered and you will have a hard time to find out what happened in the past.

Wait a second. If you have one address then anyone can connect all your addresses because there is only one. If you want to segregate your bitcoins, some wallets have an account feature that lets you do that without burdening you with the details.

In the end, I guess it comes down to preference. Wallet software is designed to manage addresses, transactions, privacy, and security for you, and it can probably do a better job than most people, but if you like to micro-manage your addresses manually, then go for it.

Do you speak about change addresses? They don't lead to stopping to the connection, in fact it is the opposite. Nearly all the wallet addresses found by walletexplorer are found through change addresses most of the time.

Or do you mean a different feature?

Why do you care how many addresses it has generated? You never have to deal with them or even look at them.

There seems to be a class of people that feel that they have to keep all their addresses neat and tidy. It really is a waste of time, like saving and sorting junk mail. Just let the wallet manage them.

Yeah, this honestly doesn't matter when you think about the fact that no matter how many address are created in your wallet, all the payments you request with different addresses end up going to the same place. The main thing here is that you (in this case coinbase) has the private key for that wallet which solely controls the bitcoins, and you just have to provide the password to access the use of that private key.

Which is mainly why I don't keep funds in coinbase or any exchange site wallet, because I don't control the private key.

Because of auto generated address you need to go to advance settings and look for it.
My problem is if i forgot my old address how can know if what address is my old..
sometimes i use my old address to login on any faucet thats why i need to stop the auto generated address on my wallet account.

At last count (A couple of weeks ago), I was somewhere around 57 addresses. Mainly for each transaction I make, I use a different address. I don't like recieving a random 0.07 BTC, then spending it, thinking it's a tip, but in actuality it's my friend giving me a few coins to hold for him while he's on holiday...

I don't even remember correctly how much bitcoin address's i owned..currently i own 4-5 address's for different purposes like signature compaign, gambling, betting, purchasing etc..I use different address's because it helps in staying secure with your Coins, avoid tracking and helps in being anonymous.

But when you have to make a large payment, you have to get fund for several address, that will also let other people know that these address belong to one person.

I think I have over 100 + Bitcoin addresses, I always use unique addresses for receiving payments. I use Electrum as my wallet so it also spends from a wallet address and next time I don't have to use those addresses.

At least 50.  I use multiple services for different reasons, and have always labeled addresses based on where they are deposited from.  I keep certain mining addresses on one wallet for tax purposes, and I have addresses for cold storage as well as exchange addresses.

If I only have one bitcoin address because I had only one goal in bitcoin is only collected on a signature campaign.
Maybe if I was interested in gambling or other trades that even I will make a few more addresses

Multiple addresses in multiple wallets for a multitude of reasons.

When I was mining it was nice to have separate wallets for each pool.
As others have pointed out: it is an excellent way to track invoices.
Some coin is stored offline and some to spend.

One of my addresses is a function of having a Coinbase account.
I think I'm about to try the Shift card linked to a Coinbase account,
and in that case it is a comfort to think that only what is in that account
is at risk (for whatever the usual and/or unforeseen risks may be ;-)

I also have more addresses, but I found the highest challenge is not linking my adresses together when spending. Doable, but it needs additional effort.

What I do is also pretty much it. I have several adresses in my Mycellium wallet, and for each one I have a proper tag that helps me readily identify where those transactions are coming from.

i used to have around 5 to 8 different bitcoin addresses as cold wallet, but i have sent all the coins in these addresses to just 3 wallets just to make it easy to manage. and for sending and receiving transactions i nowadays use a different bitcoin address every time. if you have a lot wallets it takes quite a bit of your time to make different backups of all the addresses.

Several, some have only a little bit.  I like that some wallets give you a new address everytime for new transactions.  Just feels better to not have everything in one place.

I have few addresses in different wallet types. I always prefer to have more wallets than sticking with a single wallet. I believe this is minimizing my risk even with cold storage. I do have exact address count.

I have around 6-7 addresses in blockchain.info, The reason of it being more than one is nothing specific, It's easy and simple to generate a new address and wanted a bigger variety IMO.

A bitcoin address is an invoice number.  It's a way to keep track of a specific payment request.  Therefore, it doesn't make any sense to re-use bitcoin addresses. I use a new address for every transaction, so by now I probably have several hundred bitcoin addresses.

That's a great way to explain it! I to have several hundred addresses from different transactions.

Except it doesn't include donation addresses which usually are re-used, unlike invoice numbers.

Most people btw have at least 50 addresses - clients generate them ahead of time, you just don't see them until you need them.

For example, when you ask bitcoin core to make a new payment address for you, the one it gives you it made some time ago and the one it makes you don't see, just added to the cue.

This is done so that when you back your wallet, it backs up addresses you haven't used yet.
