Title: Beta of new forum software now officially open
Post by: theymos on April 19, 2016, 02:28:10 AM
I'm happy to announce that the new forum software (called Epochtalk) is now officially open for public testing at https://beta.bitcointalk.org/. Please help test it. To log in, you currently have to click on "Help, I forgot my password" to reset your password first. This password reset affects only beta.bitcointalk.org. For extra security, I recommend using a different password on the beta than on the main forum.

You can post about any bugs or missing features in either New forum software (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0) here or Beta discussion (https://beta.bitcointalk.org/boards/32_HMtu1T569M6MuLswIug) on the beta forum.

Will give it a look right now.

Edit: Looks like I willhave to try from my comp. Got a wheel of death icon on my andriod.

nice. guess it won't be long before we start migrating to the new forum.  :D though there are still some bugs like inaccurate number of replies shown on the topic list and users post count and stuff.

Is that the final look of it or a different theme will be added? And instead of re-setting the password there, can we not just make a new(temp.) account to test it out?

It shows my total number of posts as "1505" ! Whoa! I never made those many posts, my post count is still around 593(on this forum) . Also why doesn't it show my posts made after 11th April ?
And I also see there is a "deactivate account" option, just in case I press it and confirm it accidently, what happens? I believe it should at least have an email confirmation before finally deactivating you account.

Also why doesn't it show the my posts made after 11th April ?

That's the day they imported the current database into the Beta to have content, it's not synced to the live forum.

Ah I see. But where did they come up with the magical number of 1505?

Edit : There are no ranks on the new forum?
Edit 2 : What about personal messages? Wont they be imported?
Edit 3 : Its not working good with windows phone IE browser.

1505 is just a miscalculation/placeholder for your post count, everyone has absurd values, it also seems everyone is "HERO" as of now which I'm sure will be fixed with time

The final theme will look similar. Some adjustments might be made.

You can create a separate account if you want.

err.... any way to get my password reset without an email?

No. You could create a separate account using a throwaway email service.

With the final version, there will be a way to move your account without having a valid email.

PMs?

I'm currently thinking that for security, PMs will not be automatically transferred over. Certainly, there will be a way to download your old PMs for at least a year after the transition, and maybe there will be a way to import these PMs into the new forum if you want. (I already have code written for exporting your PMs as an mbox file which you can import into eg. Thunderbird, though I haven't gotten around to creating all of the interface stuff for it yet.)

What is the security risk of transferring PMs over? I would think allowing people to import the PMs into the new forum would cause additional risks as PMs might be able to be faked, ect

My thoughts exactly. Would validating of PMs (by reporting it to a moderator) be possible after this?

There will be a period for the forum software migration, if you're asking that if the domain will still be bitcointalk.org . The answer is yes
and do we still need to reset our password after the new forum is launched or is it just for the beta testing?
I think thats mandatory when the new forum software replaces this one

The lower part of the page (or what do you called that section of a web) seems not loading. Im using the latest version of Firefox. Also can't load it using my native stock browser for Android. Or maybe that part isn't available at the moment?

This is the unofficial process at the moment... we'll make it clearer as time comes

1. update your email on bitcointalk.org (this forum)
2. data will get synchronized in a day or 2 to the new site
3. try the reset password link again from the new site

For the email, we don't want to be manually updating accounts because it is prone to error and can be subjected to social engineering hacks. Thanks.

Yeh it's that plus sign on the right bottom. That definitely needs to change IMO. Too many people confused by it (including me in beginning.) Just "traditional" reply button location seems much better.

The post count is currently 'bugged'. However, it isn't a big issue. It will be fixed.

LOL. Please delete your NSFW post in from this thread (https://beta.bitcointalk.org/threads/oI8vW9V8RXmIihGAMeJBLA/posts). I reported it, but I guess no mods is active in that forum.

They(mods) are pretty active in that forum as well ATM , I'd guess. However, the best thing you can do (IMO) is to report 'em(the post with their respective link) to a mod in this forum via PM & it'll be fine as well.

Dude, it is alright if you only put one NSFW image, but you stack 396 NSFW image in one post.
Did you count 'em? That's sarcastic.

Good to know.

The look doesn't matter that much, the functionality does. AFAIK there will be more themes/this one won't be default (?). I dislike the current one as well.

I'm not sure whether there is one outside of Github.

So new functionalities are coming ? What about translations of the menus, the buttons etc. ? That would be something I would love and to which I could contribute. If a "retro" theme, like this one is available, I won't have any regret to switch to the new forum software. Also, a little functionality that I would like would be that you would get PMs from the forum when you someone replies to a thread you marked, as a kind of notification+, but maybe all this is off-topic and there's a dedicated thread to functionality suggestions.

Lol my guides are so mashed up: https://beta.bitcointalk.org/threads/AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABI7IQ/posts

  • Font size command has changed which seems weird - every previous instance has pt but now it rejects pt.
  • Viewable width is ~60% of what it was.
  • Anchor command has gone.
  • Table commands seem the same but not working.
  • Thread and post numbering has changed from numerical to alpha which makes it very hard to tell chronological order and prevents easily swapping between versions.
  • Search seems to be doing nothing.
  • Very little user stats or information.
  • No post history of users.

I was trying to navigate to my Manufacturer trustworthiness guide but its probably page 20 by now and can't get there via link, history or changing URLs.

*Now there is no UID for users ?
*Only the messages tab works out of these three :  https://i.snag.gy/S5ZnLv.jpg
also a hover popup displaying these tabs' names should be added.
*Now the user have to type all the BB code himself ?
It is missing some frequently used BB code's buttons like bold, italics, etc. which are currently available in older version at top in "post reply".
*Why is HR and BTC a closed tag now ?
*The BTC logo is (currently) not displayed, instead BTC is only displayed after using

They are already here, you just don't have the 'access level' to see some of them (e.g. moderator tools).

No point in translating anything yet, as text strings are prone to change while in Beta.

For Lauda : yes, that's what I mean. Profile becomes Profil in French or Perfil on Spanish. That could be an interesting feature I think.

For Cyrus : of course, nothing to be done now. That's just a proportion for the future. I think it can be something nice to bring to the forum :).

That's most likely what will happen, on a platform like transifex(which is used by Bitcoin Core as well).

Honestly, the most trivial thing that's messed up for me is the width. It's a huge difference from what the current software uses. It'd get any post like yours messed up (that and the fact that bbcode support isn't complete).

All I hope is option to keep old forum layout or switch between old and new forum at will when this new one will go live. Because at first glance new layout is not that impressive imo.

*Now there is no UID for users ?

My guess is there will be an UID as well as display name link to the profile of users.
Since the display name can be changed, it is better to have the UID link to profiles as well.

Edit: nvm, it fixed itself.

I would suggest adding a feature that allows each member to hide or block any topics that they have already read and don't need to read again.  Some topics stay near the top which is fine for those that need that topic but some of us might not need to see it anymore. :)

After some poking around all I can say it's underwhelming.

The good news is that devs seem to be responsive and Bitcointalk users are a demanding bunch so there is hope that it all can be sorted out.

Is there a buglist being maintained somewhere? To check if I'm not reporting something that's already known.

To answer my own question:

I already said that the current theme won't be the final one and that there are probably going to be a few to change to. You can always request the change if that is not the case.

That's most likely what will happen, on a platform like transifex(which is used by Bitcoin Core as well).
Transifex was the first to come to mind as well.

No. Even if changing the display name gets allowed, display name != username. If you take a closer look at the posts in the beta, you will notice that left is the username (with a bigger font) and on the right is the display name (smaller).

You can login without changing the password, click on forgot password and then when it asks to enter new password, just enter the old one only.
BTW, the registration of new accounts on beta forum is currently stopped by thymos.

This functionality is not limited to legendary members.  Currently the lowest level of users there is hero.
To change username :

- Click on your username on top right.
- You would be redirected to beta.bitcointalk.org/profiles/"username"
- Click on "Edit Profile" below your avatar.
- Now enter your new Username and Display name in the textbox of the popup that opened.
- Click Save !

Don't do that. Don't use the same password on multiple sites, even if one is a beta of another. If the beta site leaks passwords your main account can get compromised.

I had a suspicion something was up when This place was lagging and throwing 502's for a while.
related? who knows..

I would go test it out right now but i am scared  :'(
..i think theymos is trying to catfish me and steal my megahurtz  :o

And will i be able to drop my GreaseMoneky Black style (global) script ?
Hey boss man a Black styled dark theme would be SUPER popular i bet.

I dunno i may wait a while to check it out though which makes me wonder..
Is this beta going to go on for a while ? like months ?
And is there some way to know if the beta version has changed ?

EDIT:
Any new forum rules for the new site by chance ? possible ?

Was there any problem with SMF or there's something new in Epochtalk that SMF doesn't.

Well, it should be obvious. SMF, even though it is doing a decent job for outdated software, is quite bad. There are a lot of different limitations, especially for the staff, that I'm not going to mention in detail at this moment. If you had kept an closer look at the project, you would have read the 'to-do' list sometimes in the past. The new forum software can have almost anything that we desire; it has been built from scratch.

I would love to see a feature other forums have..
Unless we already have it and i missed it somehow.
What i want is a link to view my own topics i created.

Also want to point out how i had the Drafts page bookmarked manually.

I think that was suggested already (or something similar). The forum, in the current state, does not have such a feature.

There is a link under "Post" and "Preview" when one is writing a post (albeit it is small).

I disagree with this one even though I appreciate the effort. If anything, you should do this on the new forum and not here. There was already a 'Master Bug' thread, but the bug list got moved to Github. This way the developers would have to check both forums in addition to Github (which is more than redundant).

Visuals are kind of subjective ATM. Some people will like it and others won't. You can file an issue here (https://github.com/epochtalk/beta.bitcointalk.org) if you notice any bugs. Just keep in mind that you should read the list of already reported bugs, so that you don't end up creating duplicates.

What i want is a link to view my own topics i created.
I think that was suggested already (or something similar). The forum, in the current state, does not have such a feature.

Also want to point out how i had the Drafts page bookmarked manually.
(there is no link to it on your profile page)
There is a link under "Post" and "Preview" when one is writing a post (albeit it is small).

Ya i know that but the drafts can save your bacon if you shut the tab / window down.
I had made a tough to type out past last year then closed the window and was almost going to cry.
I ended up searching for the Drafts page and i found and bookmarked the link.
Most web sites would simply have a link to drafts somewhere like on the profile page etc.

Ever typed something out then the site fail to load then click back to see your comment gone ?
Well if you had the Drafts page her already bookmarked then click it.. problem solved ;)
How many guys here know that ?

Yes. This can be very painful if the post is longer and well written.

Well if you had the Drafts page her already bookmarked then click it.. problem solved ;)

I'm certain that the number of users that are aware of it is not that high. They could just re-position the drafts on the new forum to make it much more visible.

How do I remove my email from being visible? I can't seem to find the option...
This option is not available at the time. It will be added later.

@ lauda can you please help me i can not reset the password.
What exactly is the problem? I'll notify a developer.

Is the hiding of email still not available?   Also, my email on BTCtalk isn't exactly real... so is it still the same process of changing the email here, waiting 2 days, then trying to setup the account on beta*?

First thought... I'm hoping there will be more themes or different visual ways to display these threads.  :)
I can't comment further without getting my account setup  ;D

If you spend a few hundred bucks out of a million on design then everything would look better. It's  subjective to some extent but still there are some aesthetic standards. It should be at least presentable. Why no one complains about Xenforo or Vbulletin or even SMF design.

The old forum style is much better than the new one.
Once the new forum is launched will the old one stay online or everyone will be forced to use the new forum software?
I know it have more features and security is better but the theme is ugly as hell  ;D

Though I don't prefer the theme over this one, imo the new features are really worth moving to the new forum. Admin, mods and we can do more :D

opinion may be biased, considering I got a better resolution avatar on the Beta.

It works well, but I sure hope the new forum will have some background colour like we have here in bitcointalk.

The beta forum functions all right but it looks bland. It needs a little bit of colour to liven it up :-\

The Beta environment hasn’t been running for years now. I don’t recall ever trying it out myself, and when I queried on the matter, we did get an answer as to why it was not running:

<…>
Wouldn’t it be better if Bitcointalk provided a common test environment that was open for anybody to use, without people having to download the software and setting up their own environments?

beta.bitcointalk.org was run for a couple of years, but virtually nobody used it. It was too boring. I'd ideally like people to actually try using Epochtalk for various things that they find fun/interesting. Maybe try a more restrictive moderation style, maybe make it more niche-focused, maybe try adding some crazy features, etc. If people actually try to use it for real things, then the real deficiencies will be found.
<…>

Some Epochtalk test sites were created as reflected on this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5114336.msg49932968#msg49932968) (I believe only Coinbistro is still running), but of course they allow to test the software with newly generated content, which is a broader goal from the perspective of a Bitcointalk user, but that lacks facilitating a more focused approach based on a migrated database and a parametrized environment to Bitcointalk’s future environment (were it to eventually crystalize).

When I saw this thread, my first thought was that it was a new one even though I saw it was quite a few pages long--I thought I might have missed it in the past couple of days.  I chuckled when I opened it and saw how old it actually is and realized for just how long I've been hearing about the fabled New Forum Software.

I'm almost certain said new software is never coming out, though I haven't checked for any new developments in the thread dedicated to it.  I'm just assuming that since it's taken so long, things that might have been worked on in the past would be, if not obsolete, not real improvements to the forum as it currently is.  Fine by me, though.

I think the truth is that no one really knows anymore. So much time has passed and the people who worked on Epochtalk probably moved their focus to new projects a long time ago. Is there anyone from the original development team still working on Epochtalk or is everything solely in the domain of the open source community?

Yo this thread is low-key hilarious.

However, I don't think the forum should be changed. It would be dishonorabru to Satoshi's legacy.

Dunno what should be done with all the funds collected for it. As of now, it seems like their main purpose is to be slowly siphoned off to the "treasurers."

They should probably be donated to the Bitcoin Core developers, though somewhat incrementally.

I realize there's no Bitcoin Foundation anymore for good reason. Theoretically such a thing could act as stewards for donated funds, but for whatever reason positions in that type of entity just naturally attract sleazebags.

Ultimately it doesn't matter so long as the forum remains basically as is. Kind of like the blockchain.

Since there is no reply recently from theymos on this thread proofs that there will be no Epochtalk.

However, I was just seeing that we have a child board New forum software (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0) dedicated to this possible new forum. What's the use of keeping this child board open when the plans for launching Epochtalk are postponed ?

What different features had it then that made it a beta version?
Knowing that the project was abandoned could be a clear indication that even if a new software is launched by theymos, it could be abandoned for this, unless this won't be functional anymore.

A project being in "beta" for too long is more or less in development hell.

While there might be some commits here and there (and they're mainly restricted to the subforum), many have gotten over the fact that we might not even see its light of the day.

Not trying to sound negative, but it shouldn't be taking this long for an UI/ software overhaul. Core functions available and those bells and whistles be added along the way, not all lumped into the main release.

Talking about backend, looks like it's last updated on May 11, 2021[1]

The current repo that is being worked on is https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk-vue (25 May 2022 last update to master (https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk-vue/commits/master), and 10 hours ago last commit in another branch (https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk-vue/commits/admin-panel) . AngularJS is EOL and the code is being ported on VueJS.

I don't know far is Epochtalk development, but IMO open source alternative such as Discourse (https://github.com/discourse/discourse) or Forem (https://github.com/forem/forem) should be considered if Epochtalk is still far from finished or ready to be deployed.

The last update was that there were some back-end stuff left to port to VueJS, get the parser set up (there was a little discussion about it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5283998.0), update the dependencies (some older versions are still being used to work with AngularJS) and hopefully should be ready to fire up that beta.bitcointalk sub-domain :)

I didn't find any information epochtalk/epochtalk-vue is port of epochtalk/epochtalk front end, no wonder some people assuming Epochtalk is abandoned. But since epochtalk/epochtalk last updated on "May 11, 2021", i'm not sure whether to interpret whether the back-end already ready for production usage or the developer currently focus on front-end

epochtalk/epochtalk is not maintained anymore
epochtalk/epochtalk-vue is the Epochtalk V2.0 VueJS version that is currently in the works. Both back-end and front-end were ported to use the VueJS syntax.
Right now they still have a bit more code to port to Vue and should be operational.
After that we can "argue" about CSS, layout style etc. We can even have a contest who forks the github repo and designs the best UI/UX theme for it. Dunno, just an idea  :P

Not to beat the dead (or unborn) horse, but the mere fact that a framework went EOL while the forum software hasn't been released yet (or had a solid beta because let's face it - the product we've seen so far shouldn't have made it past alpha QA) is kinda indicative of where this is going. Now we're more than a year into rewriting for a new framework.

So does it mean that their work on the Epochtalk software has been postponed and/or the Epochtalk project is canceled?

I thought that the Epochtalk project is delayed and might be live one day but now it seems we will stick to the SMF forums which is also not bad in my opinion.
The underlying reasons why new forum software was needed in the first place has largely been resolved via code changes in the existing smf implementation. So it is no longer urgent for new forum software to be used.

I also believe that Theymos wants the new software to be “war tested” for security issues before implementing it on bitcointalk, but there appears to be little demand for the software on other forums (there are also a limited number of forums that have the level of commerce that bitcointalk has.

In other words, I don’t think the new software is ever going to be implemented.

CMIIW, but what you say conflicted with README on epochtalk/epochtalk-vue. It mention usage of epochtalk/epochtalk as server.

That's because they started porting the frontend first and were still using the old angular version to start the server and have a working development environment.

But the backend is also being ported and when that is done the old angular version will not be needed anymore. No use having 2 instances in 2 javascipt flavours to run an app.

No spoilers, but may come with some interesting features that might jog a bit that demand. It may be wishful thinking on my part but at this point one can only hope  :P

FWIW the frontend is pretty much ported with the last pull request (https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk-vue/commit/7836a69091b1a74819c0081d87889ff663c46243) and work will start on the backend / server side. That will definitely take less times to port the route files and the rest.

... In case you were wondering  :P
