Hi I wonder about the demographics of bitcoin. Who uses it, race, location, gender?

I read the coindesk paper on it, but wonder if there is some other more updated documentation on it.

It would be great to get this kind of data, it would be very useful for alot of people.

I know a few people who have run surveys and the questions have included these types of questions, would be great to pool all the surveys for Bitcoin together to get a good data mine of these demographics.

well i think not a lot of people uses bitcoin right now but i really use it a lot, i buy some digital goods with bitcoin and i sometimes buy physical stuff from ebay shop

For us people in age of 20-30 bitcoin is myth so far.
Most of my friends is not even familiar of that technology
many of thet think of it like big ponzi sheme get rich and fast or lose a lot of money.
I think that in future some coins will go over BTC i am sure maybe we don't have it on
market right now but i sure that in future goverments they will have their own BTC10.0 type,
something with atomative taxation stuff like that.
We are going into e world more and more everyday so people will use BTC as gold today.
We are living in world where more wealth is created in enthernet space everyday.
This trend is rising its only matter of time when emoney will be very popular.
But that won't be BTC with 10min blocks for sure.
Wold is fast today people want technology like 1s transaction time and 1000tx/s.
Sadly this is not BTC today to fit such technology today.

It will be many and varied data that I think. But I know bitcoin used by men and women, ranging from farmers to high-ranking officials using bitcoin to facilitate their transactions. Moreover, in this digital age, many young people are already using bitcoin to support their school needs like me :) . hehe

Im sure that a lot of diifferent people use this,but we can say easily that it is not so popular amont the older people,
what is not surprising,most of them probably just dont know about it.
From my observation's i would say Men aged about 18-25,but i know more older people in bitcoin too.

can't say it's a reliable survey if the survey were held through internet or online surveys,its can be faked by the respondent, different if bitcoinsinireland.com do an offline survey by inviting so many bitcoiners there

70 year's old using bitcoin network.it just dont seems possible for me lol.

Holy crap!  I didn't think any geriatric folks used bitcoin, but it's a big world with lots of different birds in the forest.   Not surprised at all that the majority are young people.   That's good to see.  I see bitcoin as bringing everyone from very diverse backgrounds a little bit closer together.   Gives me a big fat hard on at night.

Bitcoin uses advanced technically advanced people, traders and investors. And also, I think, the scientists who study and involve blokchain.
By the way, it is to say, all of these people from the developed countries. In third world countries Bitcoin is not popular, or even yet in doubt.

By looking at this graph i think we need to target more older users since they have more money to invest into bitcoin.  There may be al lot of younger users but how many of them actually hold more than dust? The main problem with more older users is many are not computer literate and may find the whole thing very daunting.

Wealthy youngsters more likely to be freetards than anyone else. old people in the age limits of 50 to 60's were more involved as they are more likely to be investors and employers.

I use the bitcoin to buy things, but that is worth just about $5000 per year since 2013. I am a bit regret I spent in early 2013.

I think now a lot of variety of people using bitcoin. I believe some people are more young people who are still a major contributor to the bitcoin. bitcoin now become part of the largest financial transactions.

That makes sense, youngsters being the more risky or foolish using bitcoin to gamble, buy drugs, or other stuff. Older folk would by experience know better on how to invest and wisely use bitcoin which can be seen as money. Bitcoin is basically money in a different currency other than flat common-day currency.

That's true majority of the users in community is youth, as youth is very keen to learn new things and they are tech friendly too, and the number of users will go higher in future.

^ Some interesting information can be taken from this. It's good to get an idea of the demographics for people who want to help promote Bitcoin/Cryptocurrencies.

I remember filling in a few surveys for someone doing his/her dissertation on the subject, but I'm not sure if these results are publicly available already.

I live in Australia, not a tech geek and never really cared about computers much until i heard about bitcoin and the rest is history.

I regularly use my bitcoin for a whole range of products.
We are in the top 10 most bitcoin friendly countries so have plent of nice start ups to chose from.

it would have been so great if we could know this but unfortunately there is no complete information about this, i mean you can find some small studies with a little group like what pawel7777 said but that doesn't show anything really.

another thing that you can do to get that kind of information is to ask a big website like blockchain.info, coinbase, gyft,.. and services like that to give you statistics on where their users come from based on IP but again that information is not really 100%.

in my country many start to use bitcoin because it is the best alternative solution to paypal and skrill where many get locked in those useless payment system but we all miss the best shot to buy bitcoin when it hit 200 $.

Its truly hard to find out the people who use bitcoin. In my view unlike race, profession and other personality more people after understanding its true nature and growing potential.

This article somehow convinced me that the west are the one who's making the pump on the coin and the chinese that what other's people think. Given by some the news I think most of the chinese that hold coins are the miners and the whales is on the US.

bitcoin has been spread globally, as i can tell you there are a lot of bitcoin user in my country even though there has been no store or any bitcoin atm machine here, my friends who used bitcoin is ranged 16-30 years old

To bad that this article lacks source material. Besides it was just a survey run on 1200 people, that's a bit small quantity of respondents to make this a good and representative
study. However it definitely shows something, is the main group of bitcoiners among those 1200 respondents? Rather shows who actually takes part in surveys.

And this is much closer to the truth IMO. 16-30.
Do we count bag-holders? Whales? They dont use BTC they just store them.

The graph clearly shows people of all ages use bitcoins of course young generation is more as bitcoin is a digital money not to much old people or small kids use computer if we talk outside the US or some more countries related to US, if we talk about Asia or middle east not much old people and small kids use computer

Even if we don't have bitcoin atm or shops to use our bitcoins we can anytime convert it to our local currency very easily and in future we will find many place where we can use bitcoin directly.

Hi jza? I am curious what made you wonder about the demographics of the users of bitcoins? Where will you use it? I have also research about the users of bitcoins in the net but I haven't found any articles regarding the demographics  of bitcoins users. But If I were you, if this demographic is really important, you can conduct a survey here at bitcoin talk. You can post a survey right? For sure a lot of people will be more than willing to help you. Because they might also be able to use it someday.

A lot of different types of people uses it , but the people from I.T in my view is the users that give more support and use it.
Traders only trade, the most part of they don't give a fuck about technology.

i using bitcoin and bitcoin is very popular and its transaction is too much faster than other and bitcoin transaction fees is too much lower than other ,and i think there are maximum people are using bitcoin .

There are no studies pertaining who uses bitcoin. It seems impossible right now since users can have multiple wallets, then studying base on wallets is not applicable. Then we study based on identity but of course there is secrecy in bitcoin transactions so that cannot be applied. In short getting the demography of bitcoin users is impossible. The only plausible question that we might answer is the location, as to what countries are engaged in bitcoin.

That will be hard to know. It is growing and there is no one really counting it. Who are you? Are you with the CIA?  ;D I think no one can tell. There are a lot of people out there who is supporting it not just here. If you will turn in social medias a lot have been posting different things like referrals, hyip and other scams.  ;D

I think it may be true, because all the capacity in the computer or the internet have a maximum limit so that it also contains the bitcoin. However I see the maximum limit in the bitcoin is very large and may be able to accommodate all the people who are there in the world is to use the bitcoin

I think USA and China are the most bitcoin user in the world. Russia and Asian also use it, but not much as China and USA. I'm sure the age around 19-40.

yes it is a fact. but i think the higher ranking officials may use it more as compare to other people. and i think those people who have better chance and facilities of using bitcoin in their local market will use it. for example in Brazil there are better opportunities of using bitcoin. because there are so many shops who accept bitcoin in their shops.

I am not really making use of Bitcoin because using it as a currency does not make to much sense for me.
What I am doing is holding on to them to make a profit in the future.

Why don't you start a google survey to see the demographic of the people that uses bitcoin and put it here ;)

Majority of users are not using it as a currency is only because they don't find many places where they can spend and that is the reason they prefer to hold which is not good for bitcoin as a currency.

Keeping coins idle without using it will affect the price of bitcoin in future, if you cannot spend it at any offline store then its recommended to sell it and convert it to local currency.

Bitcoin now have many use so you don't need to hide it long time you can use it any time now buying in online pay bills etc , it's good that you will save it for the future, so what if the price crash ? In that case you'll not enjoy your bitcoin couse you just hide it in your wallet.

I am really making use of Bitcoin as an investment because if not I would not be here right now, I do not use it as much as an currency tho.
Using them to buy things is for me a waist because when the value goes up I will regret it that I have used them.

I think there is no accurate data about bitcoin users anywhere but you can use various sources as mentioned above by aother members.You can also check this forum and find some useful information regarding bitcoin users

All that information seems really irrelevant. Anyone in the "real" economy is interested in knowing what races or genders are using dollars or euros. I think it would be a waste of valuable resources trying to investigate it.

Most people make use of the Bitcoin as a currency but most people use it as an investment because the value can change.
With this the users are allowed to make money with them.

Who really uses bitcoin?

• Internet gamblers, primarily in jurisdictions with inconsistent and unfair laws
• Internet buyers and sellers of plant and chemical products that are not legal in some jurisdictions
• People who need to shelter or move earned wealth away from corrupt government restrictions
• Miscellaneous users and speculators

All this will change, but these are some of the significant "early adopters".

People who are aware about it and who believes in making quick money from it will definitely prefer to use bitcoin as an investment for future.

Totally agree. In my opinion every transaction, even just sending it to one person to another is already spending when it comes to bitcoin.

I would believe more younger people between the ages of 15 and 35 use Bitcoin and primarily more men than women. I am 60 years old though and my wife is 50 and we love bitcoin and none of our peers in our family use it or younger generation. We ar trying to educate them though slowly.

Unfortunately people are forced to buy and use bitcoin because many hackers have infected their computers and encrypted their all files so people are forced to pay the hackers to get the decryption key to decrypt the files this is the ransomware.

Surveys can't be that accurate because most of the users prefer to be anonymous.
That's why they wanted to use bitcoin in the first place.

Exactly. I can't really accept that statement since even though bitcoin is popular, it's not really that popular, even for the young people. In our country though, I can only estimate roughly 5-15% of our total population have any interest in bitcoin and not all of them are even bitcoin users, just interested.

That's not entirely the same as actually using Bitcoin, I would say. Just moving coins from one account to another isn't the same as, say, buying goods with it.

I think Bitcoin is used worldwide by every race and gender, but it's mostly used in US and western countries more than 3rd world because it's price is high for the population of this countries

Buying bitcoins at this stage is affordable as price is not too high at a moment and if you buy with current price then you can expect higher profits in future.

i use bitcoins and many many users do use it in my group we trade it we make new busness which will accept it as a payment and lots more.since 2009 to now there are billions of users who use it everyday

It will take some more time for bitcoin to reach it everywhere as bitcoin is not that popular at a moment but if you are holding bitcoins then its better to hold it for long term.

I think mostly young users and users who are not afraid to try new, revolutionary things.
I think that for some users like idea to become financially free with Bitcoin, get rid from banks etc.

Probably the Bitcoin users are well educated people, belonging to younger generations, not afraid of new techologies and "jumping into blue". China is mostly into mining.The people there hardly use Bitcoin. The mine it and trade it.
The US is different as most of the BTC startups and VC fundings are coming from there.They are the one at the edge of this technology.Also many known developers are US based.
Europe is a bit of startup environment and and also lots of trading and gambling.
But second and third world countries are coming. The number of users there is growing constantly, but they are lacking btc companies.Hope this will change in the future.They are the ones who could profit the most from Bitcoin.

i agree with you bitcoin technology will take time to provide the facility of accept bitcoin in everywhere for direct shopping , we can use bitcoin for online shoppig, and you are right that its good time to hold your bitcoin as investment for long term and we can get a good profit from bitcoin in the future.

i hope bitcoin dev will make approach with any government and make agreement with them so bitcoin can be accepted in many country and then people will know about bitcoin and learning. another good step is make learning center which will teach all bitcoin technology, inside of bitcoin and learning for getting bitcoin.

yeah you're right some of people who uses bitcoin are ranged to 16-45 years old for me because here in my country some of adult or 30+ are still using bitcoin as a currency to invest or to trade to earn profit but some country bitcoin currency are banned in their country because their goverment don't want bitcoin as a currency

If I remember correctly, the biggest demographic that uses Bitcoin was white males in their 20s and 30s, however I could be wrong. While the poll was done a while ago, chances are the demographic is still relatively similar, but I would expect more people to have started to use Bitcoin from other demographics. I don't think that there's any limit right now for who's able to join and use it.

Its simple, people who knows it are using it, as they are aware about multiple benefits attached with it and they also know that it can be the best currency in future.

Recently i use bitcoin for online shopping and i think there is maximum people are using bitcoin and maximum people are using bitcoin as investment and hold it for increase the price of bitcoin.

I use them as an investment, and i think there are many others like me. I would also use it as a payment method, if it were accepted at places.

I think I am one of those people. I dont have a credit card neither a bank account nor a bankbook nothing that is related in a bank except my ATM which is mandatory for payroll of our company. I do prefer something else and as I saw this I am really excited knowing that there is something which I can control or I am the CEO and I loved it. Although time will be spent to know more about it, its all worth the reading and watching videos about bitcoin.

Tech Nerds, WSJ Geeks, Dota/CsGo Players, Drug addicts/dealers, Terrorists, Gamblers/Online Casinos, Money Launderers, Hackers, Pimps, Speculators and a bit of regular people. (That's very rare) I may miss some but that's pretty much it. I think gamblers take the first position without a doubt by the way. Nerds take the 2nd.

while i can agree that gamblers are closely connected to bitcoin, and take the number 1 spot for usage, i must say that traders and speculators are very much second. they purely look at bitcoin as being an investment, which in itself is also a form of usage.

Yes bitcoin is growing because its getting support from its users, as more demand will lead to higher price in future and we are seeing continuous growth in the users of bitcoin.

Only introducing will not help, you need to show them how can they earn money from it and what are the benefits of using it and if they find it attracting they will start using it.

I use bitcoin online with gamble and for to transfer bitcoin and i buy bitcoin and i sell bitcoin too but if you mean  go shopping center and buy someting with bitcoin i didnt use it .Real user mean is like that for me .

Most of the bitcoin users I think are still in that age 20s and 30s. The user below 20s are maybe students who have IT related courses or introduce to them by their friends.Mostly are 20s and 30s because maybe they have businesses or jobs already in which case they can buy bitcoin as investment or they are just interested in the technology while the 40s and up are not inclined to the new technology anymore so they just stick to fiat currency and others who are involved with it may just want diversification of their investments.

Wow wow seems you really know about that, we never know average of age from bitcoin user and like how many total bitcoin user due bitcoin is anonymous and other one person can have many address in bitcoin so in bitcoin everything is equivocal.

I think Bitcoin is more and more spread among different categories of people all over the world. At the begininig it was reserved for some narrow groups of people but now more and more people no matter of gender, education and part of the world are accepting Bitcoin.

People who don't like banks, young guys who like all this internted stuff, freelancers and many other people who used to work at home and don't like community around them.

The people who use bitcoin are the people who make money over the internet, the same people that were making money with fiat are now part of bitcoin community, besides that just people who really love technology, as nerd and gamers will be using bitcoin.
I dont know anyone at my city that uses, and believe me there are several nerds but looks like they never listened the word ¨bitcoin¨.

Well freelancers does really bitcoin and they are using it as a new method for receiving their payments. And the most used payment method is paypal.
And they chose to use bitcoin because it has very cheap transaction payment and unlike with PP well it is eating their earnings from their freelancing career.

I think everybody is using Bitcoin , regardless the gender, age , country..because it's indeed money and everyone need this tool to gain the living.

That is correct that gamblers and traders are actively using bitcoin eventually they use it for their daily routine for their trading and gambling method that enjoying to lose and gain profit their bitcoin what ever happen they will use bitcoin daily.

well, this is true. younger boys have more interest then girls and old aged peoples. they found bitcoin very interesting and thrilling coin. and the most important thing they have a reason to use internet. and bitcoin gives them earning opportunity which is even better,, girls have no interest on these things. but now girls also coming in this field.

I'm sure most people out there who using bitcoin is above 17+ years old and i think all people around the world is using bitcoin, but USA and China is the most one.

i dont think that people using bitcoin is above 17+ years old because there is no survey or no clue about who is using bitcoin. and we only guess, but yes most are using bitcoin is people over the age of 17 years. i don't know how about other countries.

I do not know if there is a record for how many people uses bitcoins and from what race they belong.  If we have that data maybe uses of bitcoin will gradually increase.  Maybe more and more people would want to use bitcoin as a mode of payments and if that so the demand for bitcoins will increase.  Its price would also increase as there were many people would buy and invest their money for bitcoins.

If we are saying that we had a lot of bitcoin community who uses bitcoins,  Still there are more a lot of people are aware of bitcoins that we had now in our community of cryptocurrencies. Though many of them too they heard more about bitcoin but still ignoring the deepest advantage that bitcoin has.

If you want to know who uses bitcoin then there are so many ways that can tell. The first is here on this forum. Most of the members joined because they know one thing or another about bitcoin. secondly, look at the peer to peer platforms where people lend through bitcoins. Thirdly, so many outlets have come up to accept bitcoin as a form of payment for their products and services. Also, look at the exchanges, there are so many who are exchanging bitcoin with other commodities and currencies.

It's very simple, people who are aware about bitcoins are using it and most of them you will find on this forum, and I think its our responsibility that we should teach people around us about bitcoin to grow the community.

In this forum there are more than 800.000 members and supposedly all of them are using bitcoin. But this is not true as many persons here have a lot of alt accounts so in this forum I say maximum number of persons who are unique and are using bitcoin is 250.000-300.000 users. Anyone who has listen something about bitcoin and have been curious about it by googling for it. These persons may have opened up a wallet in blockchain to just try it and they are "frozen users" as they don't really know how to make the most of bitcoin. And last there are persons who are lurkers of the dark net who do the majority of bitcoin transactions.

Surveys? Those don't really help. The only people who do surveys are those who have free time in their hands. A majority of bitcoin users actually don't. Either they are busy setting up their business or they are automating their earnings (mining, etc).

I think the average BTC users are males, whites, Caucasians and mostly from US and few other european countries, a large portion from south asia as well.

Yes you can’t get full proof information about facts through survey but still we can get certain information on sample basis which will reflect the information of whole group. I know it’s difficult to interview each and every bitcoin user but that is the reason surveys are meant for, a random sampling can describe trend of whole community which might be similar to the opinion of whole community. It’s better to have some information than nothing.

Indeed, I think all types of people all around the world now are using bitcoin. We have american citizens, Russian, European, China, Indonesian, Australian, Philippines, London, Canada etc.

Bitcoins are used a lot by people belonging to the younger age group about 18-30 years. Also, it is still used by people belonging to other age groups, but not as much due to the technology gap between generations. Also, I believe it's used more in developed countries and cities for purchases and sales, but in developing countries, it's mainly used for exchanges and remittances.

I think the most of the users of bitcoin is youth across the globe as bitcoin is very popular among the youngsters as bitcoin is taking care of their pocket money and have made them an independent person.

Still, I doubt that India will be having more number of bitcoin users compared to USA as the literature level in India is very low.

India is kind of a sketchy choice for being in the top 3 countries that use Bitcoin the most. Per capita it would likely be something like China, US, Japan or a very similar list to that. For total population, I would think the 3rd place spot would be a toss-up, and the top two would go China, US. The US national census is every 10 years with the next one being in 2020. And the US economic census is held in every year ending in "2" and "7". First of all, of course they would prefer Bitcoin instead for USD as it's anonymous. However, USD and other currencies (e.g. your local currency) is way more used for such activities than Bitcoin is. Everybody is using Bitcoin, and I do think around 75% of us have NOT done any illegal transactions.

People who are trying to find an alternative in the bank system and all the restrictions that come with it,also people who are looking for freedom because BTC is freedom-you don't have to wait so much for a transaction and you can send BTC everywhere and the taxes are all the same-no matter the amount send-and that's what makes it so unique-the people are looking how to become independent and BTC is one of the ways to do it

Of course it's people who aware and knows about bitcoin uses it. People use bitcoin for many purposes, like investment, trading, gambling, shopping, etc. It's depends the people what they use it for.
Bitcoin is same as money, so people use it especially for online transactions.

I think bitcoin is used by so many people in the world,  different skin, culture, language and gender. But I think the most of them are people in china, becouse there are the biggest minning in the world.

Yes, it's an international currency that have a lot of power on internet.

China have a lot of mining power and that's not all, they have a lot of people that use the coin.

Yeah, and I have to add the fact that, besides being a way of making purchases and investments, many people use it as a way of storing value, especially by the fact that it is a decentralized way of storing value, giving more control and safety for the user.

I agree with you. Russians are very interested in Bitcoin as well(they are everywhere! PTC sites, Gambling sites and faucets.). But there are a lot of people who don't even know what Bitcoin is!(me included until a month ago, I knew nothing about Bitcoin, I haven't even heard about it).

It takes time, it will just come in the future as long as people will continue to use bitcoin. It's normal that some does not want to adopt because it's still risky as you can see how the price move. It's a good investment but for big risk takers also, and bitcoin as well is  a good currency we can use in gambling sites.

I'm a gamer and since steam has been able to accept bitcoin; ive given up using my income pay to buy games; instead i try out various methods of getting bitcoin online and use what i earn to buy the games through seam. It has really helped my budget alot and i hope i get to see other places accepting bitcoin.

A lot of people uses bitcoin and most of them are teenagers since they are one who mostly uses internet now a day. And they're the one who are easily addicted to internet.

That's my biggest pleasant surprise, steam accepting bitcoin, battlerite here I come. :D


Also, a lot of teenagers could use some spare money to spend and bitcoin can offer just that, also teenagers can spread bitcoin in their own circles, i can see a wide spread of bitcoin in the next few years and a lot more people will know, therefore bitcoin will enter a little wider circle of usage.

I do not think we can state the exact demographics of bitcoin. And for me, it does not matter anyway. In the future, if bitcoin is massively adopted then location, gender, race will not matter.

You are right. For the time being, it is used by young people. but in the future, it will be used by everybody.

Well yeah as I can see that teenagers accounts for almost a half of the number of bitcoin users and the potential of them using bitcoin is very high. Because teenagers are the ones who are very easy to adapt new technology and trends, bitcoin isn't a hard task for them to use. Moreover, teenagers using bitcoin will draw more and more other teenagers and that leads to a brighter future of bitcoin   ;D

I think that matters, have a lot of differences between poor and rich countries, a lot of differences between men and women.

Isn't just about the price, you can create services for this people, look for their needs and make something new.

to me those people who know aobut the benefit of bitcoin are using bitcoin, as they know the advantage of bitcoin but still most of the people have no idea about bitcoin therefore they are still not taking interest in bitcoin.
