Old picture but this is still what I'm running. 10 Compacs on a single 10 port A-300 hub I believe it's a relabeled https://www.amazon.com/Sipolar-USB2-0-Bitcoin-Indicator-Powered/dp/B01K4LYX7U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486327095&sr=8-1&keywords=sipolar+A-300

$5 Purex 120mm case fan using a home made dc barrel to molex adapter 12vdc wall wart powering a $5 evercool single fan controller.

RasberryPi3 is now updated with Pixel and I followed Jake36 post to install novak's cgminer-gekko-rev2.

I heard those hubs broke pretty easily some time ago (don't remember when or where I heard that). Good to know that someone on the forum runs one of these hubs, once I get a few 2pacs and bit fury sticks I might consider this or the superbpag. Voltage is a little low on each port (5v600ma) compared to the superbpag but otherwise good; these also sell on eBay.

I've been running that particular A-300 non-stop since U2's were $75 a PIECE!!!

I can't even remember when U2s were still available, I started mining actively back when the U3 was still on sale and when you could easily get a Block Erupter for five bucks and shipping. Those were the old days.. Looks like a nice hub, illl consider it once I get my sticks :)

No pics at the moment, but I currently have this Anker USB 3.0 hub:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EYXZI4M/

Works fine, but won't work with RPi, I would like to switch over to a different hub that I can run on the RPi. I currently have four compacs running at 275mhz and I have two 2Pacs ordered.

I was thinking of getting this:
https://www.amazon.com/Superbpag-Portable-Charger-Transfer-Samsung/dp/B013OK10YM

Hoping to find something to work with the RPi and be able to provide enough power for the 4 compacs and 2 2Pacs. Hoping to crank these things up 300+mhz.

You should be able to. Superbpaq supplies 2A for each port and works well with RPi.
You can push an original compac to somewhere around 340Mhz under 1.95A.

somehow, I was not able to run more than five overclocked Compacs on one Superbpag, but I did not try too hard.

For biggie(s) I am planning to use 300W PSU from my old HP500 tower that i upgraded to 500W.
It got PCie and biggie will get at least one PCIe connector. Should be easy peasy, I hope.
they sell on ebay for $25-28, great value, IMHO

Put the USB 3.0 hub into a non powered usb 2.0 hub. That is how I go my Orico A3H10 BK to work. Could not plug it into my powered Orico USB P10-U2-PK

Has anyone managed to modify an existing powered hub so it can support more power?

I know I saw one picture of a Hub that had been opened up, and and additional +5V and GND wire had been soldered on top of the thin trace already present on the PC board. The idea is that the thin trace would have too much resistance and would cause a larger voltage drop when more current is drawn.

There were a lot of posts on this in the latter half of 2013 and early 2014 when USB miners were popular.

I think thats what ive already seen. It was to a standard hub which had the unsusd +5v and GND. Just wondering if you could modifiy an existing powered hub to "beef it up" powerwise. Where woild the most likely bottlenecks be to stop it drawing the maximum current possible?

My attempt at upping the power to my soon to be arriving 2pacs on the cheap. I'm reusing stuff I already had on hand.  I am waiting on my Block Erupters to sell on eBay to reclaim a 5v 40 amp led "meanwell" power supply. My plan is to use Monoprice usb extenders and some 18GA wire to hook up the power of the meanwell and data of a cheap 10 port hub (also hooked up to the meanwell) I hope to get these guys running at 3 to 3.5 amps per.

I slice the jacket and remove the red and black wire (verifying that they are the +5 and ground on the usb ports) Cut the red wire and cap the side coming from the usb hub. Solder in the new 18GA wire +5 and ground cables. Verify no shorts and wrap the solder joints on opposite sides of the usb cable.

http://i.imgur.com/fMiqMC5.png

http://i.imgur.com/HFSVzpa.png

I cut some 3/4 wood dowel and using a saw and 1/2 drill bit made usb "Holders" they are spaced 2" apart to allow cooling.
I plan on attaching these to the board that my power supply is mounted to and using hot glue attaching the usb "holders" to the wood dowel.
And then attaching cooling fans.
Will Post more pictures when I get it completed. Just wanted to throw this out in case it helps others.

What gauge are those USB wires?
I know it is a short distance, but will they carry the 3.5 amps without getting too hot?
I would guess they are only 28awg or 24awg.

I started looking for some cables to do this with and the biggest wire I can find is 22awg:
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-22AWG-Extension-Cable-Female/dp/B017XVCK7O

Thinking about just getting some of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Uxcell-Female-Socket-Connector-Pieces/dp/B00H51E7B0/
and making my own wires/hub assembly.

They were the "gold" series of usb extenders. 24GA if i can remember. They don't have them on the site anymore. I am pretty sure they are under rated for the job at hand. but I'm going try my luck. Like you said it's a short run and my worry is more of the usb connector than the wiring. I thought about building my own connections but couldn't work out something robust enough. I may have to if these fry. :D

Yeah, I think I am going to try to keep things less than 3 amps. I don't think the little extra hashrate will make up for the additional cost to construct something that can handle more than 3 amps.

Keep us updated. Hoping to get my 2Pacs by the end of the week.  8)

Ya I'm going to start off at 1.5 amp and work up slowly. Even if its 2 or 2.5 amps I'll be happy. I was trying not to fry the usb hub with 10 2pacs mainly. And ya I don't know where I am on the list but the wait is killing me lol

Same, I bought my stick pretty early but I'm not sure if it's shipped or not. Either way we're pretty much guaranteed a stick and I'll finally be able to test out my new hub. I'm more excited for the BF16 stick and overclocking that but we've got the 2pac for now.

This is great news, thanks for the update. I just got everything mounted and tested. Everything works great just need my 2pacs :D
I think it turned out pretty good. The power supply was a little smaller than I thought, 30amps so I'm gonna try to run these guys at 2.2-2.4 amps. Very excited now!!  ;D

total cost around 5 bucks for some double sided tape plus stuff i had laying around.

Damn that's a serious cooling setup... wonder how high you'll be able to clock those sticks like that! Also bought one of your block erupters on eBay for my collection, works nice and well, I'll keep it in my drawer until I can get something to display it.

I had/have a bunch of hard drive coolers, like 100+ i got for a great deal .50 each.  These things are unstoppable. The asic that you bought was run by the power supply, raspberry pi, usb hub, and 3 of those 4 fans non-stop for 2 years with zero issues. Which is why I'm using the same setup with the 2pacs. Hopefully the usb extenders will hold up.

And as far as overclocking ... I hope i can get approx. 300gh out of this guy and have it stay nice and cool  ;D

That is a very nice looking setup you put together there - I hope everything works out after all that work (referencing your concern regarding sending that much current through wire of that gauge)! It looks sound & my bet would be that it will work fine with the 2PAC's! Keep us posted!!

nice find! those blank usb sockets look perfect for direct wiring +5v/gnd from an old atx/meanwell /whatever psu with the data/ground wires from an old usb donor cable wired in.

no worries about melting crap 28 gauge usb power wires there.

whats "high power?"

i ran 5 compacs at just under 2 amps each plus an artic usb fan  for months.

did have the artic fan partially aimed at the hub as well as the sticks.

I killed one with 3 futurebits.

and killed another with 4 du1's.

My "controller" was reporting power surging backwards along the usb 3 line into the computer. so I think it has a design flaw.

Great hub until the bed started smelling funny.

I guess in the defense of superbpag they might not be made to run in a 90-105F ambient room.

That's probably the issue- they dont have the best cooling features with just a copper fin and with so much power running through them something might've malfunctioned in the heat.

I placed one in the middle of a desk fan and it lasted a month longer than the other.

Still, poorly tested for flaws...Or maybe I just break things.

As I discovered with my 7-port, 60W charging hub from Plugable -- pop it open and look at how the power is distributed.

On the Plugable, it takes 12vdc in and has 3 buck regulators taking that down to 5v  for the USB plugs. That said... 1 regulator feeds ports 1 & 2, the 2nd regulator feeds ports 3 & 4, the 3rd feeds ports 5-7. See where this is going?

After futzing around with 2x of the 2PAC's along with an original Compac just plugging them in 1-2-3 I was unable to run all 3 at decent speed without at least 1 stick dropping out. Looked inside the hub and found ^^ so...

Put one 2PAC on port-2, the other on port-4 and the Compac on port-6 so each stick has it's own 5v regulator. Now the Compac is back up to its usual 318.75MHz and the 2PACs are running 175MHz 225MHz giving a total of 65-70ish GHs pointed at solo.kano.org. Lovin' it :D

Hey man- you know your stuff! I am setting up a 2pac rig with with compacs, what USB port would you go for? I am having the same issue, the power is not evenly distributed through the power hub, had to swap them around- I will have 8 2Pacs and 4 Compacs- so I think I need a decent powered hub.... any ideas ?

I'm running about 200 watts on 10 sticks for 300gh. So I don't think that's overkill, could still use more lol. If you look at the left of my miner you'll see the kill-a-watt. It hovers between 180 - 205 watts.  But that also includes fans, hubs and pi's

So, an update, I underestimated the amount of power I would need by 2X. I have this power supply ordered (5v 60amp) to fix this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-110V-220V-TO-DC-12V-24V-5V-Switch-Power-Supply-Driver-Adapter-For-Led-Strip-/351769808694 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-110V-220V-TO-DC-12V-24V-5V-Switch-Power-Supply-Driver-Adapter-For-Led-Strip-/351769808694)

Until then I split it into 2 miners each with its own power supply, pi, hub and 5 sticks

Other than upping the voltage on the 2 sticks with hw errors I'm pretty happy with this speed (1.48v at 300mhz)

Going along with hurricandave's suggestion of custom usb cables. I'm working on version 2 now, going straight to the jack this time. I hope I can cut down the power usage a little.

Yes, if you don't plan on running them over 100Mhz.

That hub will provide max 0.5A per port. Two fast charging ports can provide more power, but only if the hub is not connected to the PC/RasPi/whatever...

So you're running the beefy (24ga?) wires from power supply to the two outer posts on the USB connector and then the two inner data wires to the USB hub? Do the male plugs that go to the USB hub only have data +/- connected, do are you doing something with the 5v from that bus, too?

Would you mind providing a closer image of where the female ports connect to the wood supports?

I like this idea and may "borrow" it if that's okay with you...

Those are 18ga power wires on the outside and 28ga data inside.
I don't make them anymore. I make "upgraded" usb cables now.
They were too difficult to make and assemble and I didn't trust them.
I tested 10x patched cables against 10x homemade ends they didn't make much difference.
So now I just "upgrade" usb cables by cutting the power from the hub side, solder in 18awg wire powered from the meanwell.
and stick em in a plastic holder

http://i.imgur.com/2MCQ7VM.jpg

I made a post in the "I did it" thread with more info. The only real difference is I now cut the both power wires coming from the hub.

So for the last few inches/cm before terminating in the female plug you are running the thinner wire? What's the max amperage you have pushed through the connectors?

yep it goes thinner as it gets to the female end. the usb cables i use are 28awg data and 24 awg power.
basic wire thickness from the power supply is ... meanwell  -> 16awg -> 18awg -> 24awg
I have put 1.51v @ 300mhz which is about 2.8ish amps. But I am having stability issues so I don't know what i am going to run it at.

Where do you do the split from 16awg to 18awg? I didn't see a distribution block in your pictures, is there one just off screen somewhere?

I don't have good pictures yet. I'm still building it lol. Basically I "upgrade" the usb cable and then solder all 5 18ga wires from a "group" of miners to a single 16ga wire that i then run to the power supply. No distributions blocks just lots of solder and tape :)

if you look at it from the top you can see the clump of wire at the bend were 2 groups of miners come together that bundle of tape is where i soldered the wires.

What is the best solution here? or any other hub suggestion for raspberry pi? Thanks

Hi All,

I would like to build similar to this setup:

https://s21.postimg.org/fdfl4forb/miner1.jpg
Picture not mine. Thanks to owner

I will be using the items below:
* superbpag USB 3.0 70 watt hub - I saw on this thread
* 2pcs sidehacks 2pac usb stick
* artic fan
* raspberry pi 3

I would like to know if this will suffice to run for at least a year. Im doing this to experience only (not to ROI)

Also can I also attach the display, just like on the picture?

Thanks in advance.

if you run them for a year, that would do nothing lol and spend  very little wattage.  I have 4 with my 20 port USB 3.0 with raspberry pi 3.0, pulling about 78watts.  that includes 2 usb fans.

Downside is those are only 2.0 so you can't do real high ocs with them. That's why I opt for some of the superbpag hubs even though they're not the most durable in the world, I clock my compacs to 300 easily with them.

No, you got it right. The most common USB3.0 ports and hubs can provide a little more current than 2.0 allows but folks have had issues running sticks directly from 3.0 hubs. Since we don't care about the higher speeds 3.0 can run that leaves main requirement as...

The need to simply use a hub that will supply more 5vdc power such as ones rated for 2.1A and higher charging. Look for BC2.1 as  I recall. They are normally used to power tablets/phablets and the better ones will happily provide more than just 2.1A -- but -- look at how many ports and which ports it can feed that power to at the same time.

Looking forward to updates and pictures of your setup.

What are my choices for 3 x 2Pacs (I'll run them at 200 MHz)?

Works great but gotta know it's quirks.

One of these days I will take my 2nd one and hard-wire the port power feeds to a single 5V 15A supply but as the old saying goes: The cobblers children have no shoes...
That and at work don't have my usual time for um, other things... For the past week or so really into trying to get a handle on why our $500k laser test bed system's beam is wandering... Not good when trying to hold less than 2オm position tolerances... Narf

Dear fellow bitcoin mining enthousiasts,

I've recently bought 4 Gekkoscience 2Pac's. I would like to use them together with the Gekkoscience Compac I already had. So for the moment I'm looking for a suitable powered usb hub that ships to Europe and that is compatible with the laptop ( runs Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS) I use for the bitcoin full node. The laptop is a relative old model (about 5-6 years old) and has only USB2.0 ports.

I've seen a mining setup on this forum that uses a Sipolar A-300. Is this a good hub? I've read comments about this hub that the amps per port are a bit low. Would this hub allow me to overclock the five miners?

An alternative hub I'm considering is the Sipolar A-210 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Industrial-High-Power-USB-HUB-20ports_60343874449.html?spm=a2700.7724838.0.0.ZsEEgx). This hub should deliver 1A per port. Has anyone of you experience with this hub?

The Plugable 60W hub that has been suggested looks also interesting, however I doubt whether it will be sufficient to power the 5 overclocked miners 24/7.

Or, do you have other suggestions that would allow for overclocking, and are acceptable for my budget (at most 100 euro or about the same in dollars)?

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely

That specific hub actually is maxed running just 3 sticks and you MUST make sure each is plugged in so it is 1 stick for each of the 3 regulators in it. Just will not have enough power any other way so more than 3 on it is out of the question.

I bet you could run 6x 2PAC if you set the voltage to the lowest value and only run them at 175MHz. You would only pull about 6.2W per compaq which should keep it well below each regulator's maximum and you would still get about 115.2GH/s overall.

Thank you for your reply. So it is not advisable to run 5 on them. I've also read your previous posts, it does indeed not look very good. Then my options are using two Plugable hubs or one more powerful one.

Thank you for your reply. Is this solution something that would work reliably 24/7, or can I expect a lot of interruptions? I'm fairly new to bitcoin mining. I've used in the past an Orico 10 port usb 2.0. But even with only one compaq attached I could not get the speed of that compaq above 12 GH/s. So that was quite disappointing. So now I'm looking for a setup that has been tested before and that is very stable.

Care to play again?

Been there, tried that. Even with the sticks at OEM default of 100MHz it would not do it. Tweaking Vcore and speed, still no go with 3 sticks so forget about running more. For hubs NOT designed expressly for stick miners it seems that any power rating given is more of a suggestion than reality if you actually want 5v out @ rated power per-port.

My guess is that yes, a normal or a 'charging' hub *may* be able to provide rated wattage but it will NOT be with 5vdc coming out but instead the voltage will be lower. Maybe charging circuits don't care but the sticks do. The regulator in the sticks cuts off when incoming voltage goes below 4.4vdc. Even at the default 100MHz sticks were dropping out so....

That probably explains why I was only seeing 4.86v on each stick. How hard are you pushing your 2PACs? I was hoping to expand to 6x 2PAC, but since that seems impossible on this hub, I might as well push the ones I have a little harder.

Hi guys,

A little bit off-topic and probably silly question: do you think a laptop cooler would be okay to use as a solution for the 2Pacs?
I was thinking to sit the hub & sticks on this Deepcool N200 (http://deepcool.com/product/nbcooler/2013-12/8_220.shtml) cooler, I'm assuming it would cool better than a normal USB fan.

so lay hub on its side        I think it is not ideal  as I think  the air moved by the cooler will not flow fast due to small grill.  I found one on ebay  for  22 usd

I'm just brainstorming here, maybe we can come up with a more efficient, cheaper & better-looking cooling solution.
I can get my hands on the N200 cooling stand for approx. $8, same price as the Arctic but with (theoretical) better cooling performance.

The hub I will be using is the Plugable USB 2.0 7-Port Hub (http://dxg49ziwjgkgt.cloudfront.net/images/usb2-hub7bc/main_512.jpg), so actually it won't sit on it's side.
The sticks - indeed - would be cooled on their side which concerns me from the efficiency point of view. What do you guys think?

Thanks.

Once a fan is used the orientation of the heatsink is a moot point unless it is one very tiny low-flow fan. Keeping fins vertical only matters with convection cooling.

I do hope you have read my earlier posts about the power layout of the Plugable 7-port hub...

Almost, here is a simulation of what I have in mind.
At $8 I think I'll give it a shot and monitor the temps. If it works out then great, if not, I have 30 days to return the stand. :)

Title: Hub that works with RPi and 2Pac's
Post by: tykom on May 26, 2017, 12:03:17 AM
For those trying to mine with 2Pac's and RPi's this 5V 4A hub from Amazon Basics is currently running two 2Pac's (not overclocked) through an RPi3.  Hub is USB 2.0 and is the only one I've had success with out of the 4 I own.  The ports on the front are higher current so it might even support a third stick but I only have 2 atm.

1) Hi Guys, I have a shit HUB, powered with 3A (at least in specifications), when I plug my Gekko directly in notebook port, I can mine at 200 mhz fine, but when I plug into that Hub, it even donエt start to Mine. Can I throw it away?

2) Another question, is it preferable a 3.0 USB hub or a 2.0 USB Hub?

Why would you throw away perfectly good hub? I would just use it for other stuff. You should get a USB 2.0 hub. The results from USB 3.0 hubs are sketchy at best.

Iエm planing to connect 3 sticks(2 pac BM1384) and a USB Fan.

Also for me, living in Brazil, itエs easier to buy in aliexpress than amazon (they donエt ship to Brasil most of products)

It'd probably work, amps per port is decent if you can connect devices through the yellow ones on the hub. As for a fan, although most people like the 1 dollar loud USB fans, I prefer the more expensive desk fans. Decent airflow and keeps the sticks happy.

I Was Wondering, a 10 Ports hub like this: http://www.orico.cc/goods.php?id=6225 (http://www.orico.cc/goods.php?id=6225)
With a 12V3A power, this mean a 36Watts, How this Watts are distributted to ports?

36Watts means 7.2A in a 5V, but are each port limited to an Amperage? or if you connect 3 ports only, those Amperes will be splited into these 3 ports?

USB 3.0 is sketchy with the Compac and 2Pac sticks, so try sticking to USB 2.0 hubs. I did some looking around on the aliexpress site and came up with this one:
https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/LVSUN-120W-5V-24A-10-Port-USB-Charger-HUB-USB-3-0-Chipset-with-Data-Transfer/32640377816.html

You can put the two 2Pac miners in the 2.4A USB Hub ports (there are four total data ports) and you can plug the fan into one of the other non-data ports.

It's not cheap, but then his current ports that also pass data are kind of odd and are scarce.

Cheers,

Only .5A a port is pretty bad, to my experience I have run these miners just fine on 3.0 hubs. They cost a little more than 2.0 hubs but they're necessary for real OCing. As for the brand, ORICO is a decently good manufacturer of hubs. Never had issues with them, just always make sure to check amps per port.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/ORICO-60W-12-Ports-USB-3-0-Hub-including-3-BC1-2-Charging-Port-and-4/32774929010.html (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/ORICO-60W-12-Ports-USB-3-0-Hub-including-3-BC1-2-Charging-Port-and-4/32774929010.html)

Iエm planing to connect 3 sticks(2 pac BM1384) and a USB Fan.

Also for me, living in Brazil, itエs easier to buy in aliexpress than amazon (they donエt ship to Brasil most of products)

I have that exact hub, and am having all kinds of stability problems (miners won't run for more than six hours without going zombie). See the main 2pac support thread for details. Don't know if it is related to the hub, but if I were starting over again, I would be looking at something else.

I Think this usually means that in sometime there was not enough power to run them, so they  went zombies. Try lowering frequency in 10 or 20 mhz, and lower just a little bit the VCore, and see whatエs happen.

Actually you made me think that in my house, I have a really unstable power source, it usually loose power in a flash moment, these kind of thing would make the sticks goes into zombie mode!

I've been running four of the 2Pacs @ 150MHz on this Sipolar hub (https://www.amazon.com/Sipolar-USB2-0-Bitcoin-Indicator-Powered/dp/B01K4LYX7U) with no issues.  I haven't spent a ton of time fine tuning them but my initial attempts to run them at 200MHz didn't work, seems like the draw is too much for the individual ports.  I haven't tried each stick one by one in each port but I will post an update when I do.

OK tested with this new little Eyeboot 2 port usb hub extender/splitter (only $14.99 usd from Amazon with free shipping);

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07281L7QC

http://i.imgur.com/YVCZ36N.jpg (http://imgur.com/YVCZ36N)

It comes with 5V 2 amp power supply so has everything you need out of the box.

http://i.imgur.com/8Wa2iLD.jpg (http://imgur.com/8Wa2iLD)

First I tested it on 100 mhz and got a speed of 11.14 GH and a power draw of 1.1 amps

http://i.imgur.com/ZY2ZRu2.jpg (http://imgur.com/ZY2ZRu2)

http://i.imgur.com/cLtAGOH.jpg (http://imgur.com/cLtAGOH)

http://i.imgur.com/EQufcrp.jpg (http://imgur.com/EQufcrp)

However I did my own test on the hub and found the max power draw (per port) possible is 1.5 amps (see pic below)

http://i.imgur.com/z2aCs7m.jpg (http://imgur.com/z2aCs7m)

So I decided it was safe to overclock the miners. Here are the final results;

At 150 mhz we get a speed of 16.41 GH

http://i.imgur.com/f7KCFvp.jpg (http://imgur.com/f7KCFvp)

At 175 mhz we get a speed of 19.51 GH

http://i.imgur.com/jhXm76E.jpg (http://imgur.com/jhXm76E)

At 200 mhz we get a speed of 21 GH

http://i.imgur.com/9XAzBdm.jpg (http://imgur.com/9XAzBdm)

Pros: it is cheap and cheerful. can boost the power of any usb port it is used with. includes 3A 5V power supply
Cons: shape means it can only run 1 usb stick. power draw is limited to 1.5 amps.

We are giving away 5 pieces of the Eyeboot 2 Port USB hub, see the thread here;

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1962973

You must however agree to the following;

1. you will write an honest review about the hub
2. take pictures or video showing how you use the hub
3. post review on bitcointalk or youtube or your own blog

Only 1 piece per person. Those with Hero/Legendary status on the forum will be given priority.

I have on order a Sipolar 30 Port.
https://www.amazon.com/Sipolar-Charging-Station-Charger-Cabinet/dp/B01KPQJRAW

More power than you'd normally require but should be useful for what I need.

That 5V/60A psu layout caught my eye.   I should be able to tap into for other things.

Also Based on the layout the hub may be able connect to two system simultaneously.

I'll post some updates on it when it arrives.

So, possibly stupid question, but I'm new to this.

I'm currently running a pair of 2PACs at 150MHz with Raspberry Pi controlling them.  I can tell ample power is a constant issue.  I have one clearly substandard USB hub that is powered, but only has a 2 amp power supply.  If I try to run both 2PACs on it, eventually one drops out.  I can however run 1 off the Pi unit itself, and one off the hub.  But that is less than ideal, especially since I'd like to clock them higher.

I have another powered USB hub that is not compatible with Raspberry Pi, but which has a 3 amp power supply.  On a scale from "Go for it" to "You're gonna fry you 2PACs", how bad of an idea is it to just use the 3 amp power supply with the hub that normally uses a 2 amp power supply?

Alternately, I did order a Sipolar 10 port HUB, so I could just wait for that to eventually show up from China, but I've caught the bug a bit...

The 2Pacs should be okay as long as you are not up-ing the voltage and frequency and pushing it to work harder than its default settings.   The hub might give out first if you draw 3A through it though.

There is some notes on the first page of posts about daisy chaining hubs to overcome some specific hub incompatibilities with the pi.   It might or might not apply in your case.

I think there are a lot of unknowns with your question. It is hard to make a judgement call regarding your hub and 3A power supply. One of my concerns would be does your hub and power supply both use barrel connectors or micro/mini USB? If it uses a barrel connector, you need to ensure that your polarities match between the two and that they are the same size.

Sipolar 5V 2.1A 30 Port USB 2.0 HUB

Pros:
  • Very sturdy.  No flimsy feeling parts.
  • Works excellent with the Pi3B.
  • Split Hub chain.  Can connect 15 ports to 2 different systems, or 30 to one.
  • Tested a few ports drawing 2.5A with no issues.

Cons:
  • Power backfeed out USB-B ports.
  • VID:0bda PID:5411 - Realtek Semiconductor Corp Controller.
    • No Windows 7 driver.
    • Compatible id comes up as Generic USB.
    • cgminer reporting write errors.   TBD.

They both use barrel connectors, and the polarities are the same.  I was slightly mistaken about two things however.  One is 5V, 2A, and the other was 5V, 5A.  Regrettably, I was also wrong about connector compatibility.  One is just ever so slightly larger than the other.

I attempted to daisy chain them as well, and still no luck.  The Pi doesn't recognize anything at all plugged into it.

I'll just have to wait for my sipolar 10 port to get here.  It's encouraging to see other people have had good experiences with it.

I want know require spec for using multiple sticks.

Is it enough only 12V 5A ?

Do I need to check each port how many support ampare?

Each port supports 2.1A,should be sufficient for a small overclock on the chip. Should work with 4 sticks. If each port is also 5V then the power out is around 10W, check the 2pac thread for an OC chart.

It won't work, because when you remove the data cable (read on product's description on Amazon) the ports will provide the amps but NO data transfer capability.

As long as the sticks run at the the default 100MHZ - maybe.
That page says the power out (assumed per-port) is only 5V 600mA which is the output of normal non-charger USB ports/hubs. To push the sticks to higher freq means more current needed, as in up to 1.5 to 2 amps per-stick.

New here, new to the 2pac.   But glad to see this miner still has active discussion.

I have 4 2pac's
I have an Anker 7port powered 3.0 that I currently use for 2 Futurebit Moonlanders and an Artic Breeze and they work great on it.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B014ZQ07NE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm just testing the 2pac's to see if I can get all 4 working on the same Anker 7port to see if I should buy another
No luck

I'm using XP 32bit, USB2.0, did the Zadig
I can get 1 at time working easily, with a 150 freq setting.  So my thought is it's the hub or the .bat

I played around with unplugging and plugging in intervals and am able to get 2 out of 4 working,  but not always the same 2 (I know, fun right?)

I did the cgminer.exe -n , found my multiple Bus # Device #  thinking I could specify each USB device with a --gekko-2pac-freq 150 --usb #:# (4times)
which took it back down to 1 working
I can see them all in my device manager
Can you specify COM port instead of bus:device?
It's weird that cgminer will only start 2 of them

If it is the hub, what powered hub is recommended for 4 2pac's and a fan? planning on an affinity 120mm fan

These things are really finicky

You gotta consider a 2Pac at 150MHz is going to be pulling about 1.4 amps. That's not insignificant.

so drop the freq and/or get a more powerful hub?  suggestions on hub?

FYI,  I feel like an idiot for not realizing that it had to do with power per port.

UPDATE:   I dropped them to freq 25 and all 4 worked fine.  Time for a new hub.

FYI,  I feel like an idiot for not realizing that it had to do with power per port.

I almost bought the 10 port Sipolar hub a few posts up that only provide 0.6 A per port.  Luckily I was able to cancel my order.  I must have been looking at hub specs so long I'd gotten confused about which hubs had which specs when I ordered it.  Maybe I got it confused with a different Sipolar 10 port model that did provide 2A per port.  No idea.

I'm currently running a pair of 2PACs on a Superbpag 7 port hub (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013OK10YM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which is rated at 2A per port.  I have them up to 225Mhz which is as much as I dare with my current cooling solution.  Going by the spreadsheet on post 1 of the support thread, that should have them pulling something like 1.75A, especially since I have the vcore tuned as close I could without hardware errors.  But I suppose it could be a bit above that.  The heatsinks are warm enough to be uncomfortable to the touch, but not immediately yank my fingers away.  So I think I'm ok.

I'm hoping to get a few more 2PACs and then we'll see how well the hub holds up.  I think I read elsewhere that running this hub at 100% capacity with poor ventilation for extended periods killed it pretty hard though.  So we'll see how things progress.

I'm reading the same about the superbpag 7port

capable of 2A per port, but that they die out if overloaded.

It seems the only hubs with higher power are the eyeboot options.  I was hoping to not spend so much on a hub, but maybe it's a sign that I just need to buy more usb asics! :o :D

UPDATE:
Or maybe the better cheaper option is 2-3 superbpag hubs in a daisy chain? so there's only 2 devices per hub.  anyone done that?

After a days of testing this Hub klintay generously shipped over,
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1779423.msg19508324#msg19508324

here is an initial summary of the unit:

Eyeboot USB Mini 2-Port USB 2.0 Hub Splitter

Pros:
  • Works with a single 2Pac out of the box on Linux (Pi3B) and Windows.
  • 5V 3 Amp power adapter
  • No power backfeed.  Won't mysteriously keep components awake when the PC is off.

Cons:
  • Can not run more than one 2Pac (with right angle adapter)
    • Voltage starts a bit low @ 4.7V with one 2Pac connected.
    • And begins to drop as load is applied 4.3-4.7V.
    • A second device connected and running amplifies this drop < 4.3V.

I'll update this post with more details and some photos as it becomes available.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to plug them into different ports on the computer or daisy chain.
Not with this particular model, but I've had multiple hub connected in both configurations without issues.

I got my 10 port from aliexpress, the data rates were included in the full product spec's when i purchased it. Look on the Sipolar web site for details.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Sipolar-high-quality-usb-2-0-hub-power-supply-usb-hub-10-port-usb/32705044739.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.mF9xrG

The amazon one in the picture also doesn't have a up port.

Hello All,

Sorry newbie here. Need your advise.

For simplicity, may i ask to share your hubs that works with multiple 2Pacs or even with other USB Sticks.  If possible, kindly advise where u purchase it too. Negative and Positive remarks will definitely help to avoid failed purchase.

Example

1. USB HUB NAME -
$xx.xx -
Purchase it here..
CONS:
PROS:

I am looking to buy one to work with a minimum of 2 to 8 2PACs.

Thank you all in advance.

4 2pacs will fit in this superbpag https://smile.amazon.com/Superbpag-Portable-Charger-Transfer-Samsung/dp/B013OK10YM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498654958&sr=8-1&keywords=superbpag

so you would need 2 hubs

others may use different hubs, but I found this one to work for me

Oh cool, I just found out about USB mining and now there's a thread! :) I have some questions, though..

1. Where does one purchase USB miners?
2. What is they power and/or resources (CPU, RAM?) usage?
3. Are they worth it? I have in mind that I would like to mine altcoins, namely LTC I think.

You almost hit the right thread, this one is for what it takes to power them.... Try GekkoScience 2Pac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1764803.0) for all your answers. These days stick miners are only good for Solo Lottery mining as they are too under-powered for most pools to accept.
btw: the sticks ONLY do Bitcoin -- not altcoins.

Not all sticks, I have futurebits that are daily profitable for scrypt, by 10cents or so after electricity. but upfront cost is so high on sticks that ROI will be 20years or so at current difficulty.

Most pools accept shares from my Compac, 2pac and even Antminer U1s. Of course you won't make much, but it's always fun to get some dust rewards. Solo mining is by far the best way to use stick miners as it's your only (small) chance to get anything from them these days.

Also, my Eyeboot 2-port 5v3a USB Hub is here! Pics coming in later. 2Pacs not liking either the voltage I have on em or the power (300mhz), but I will still post initial results.

https://s15.postimg.org/ckvfusejv/IMG_20170629_133502.jpg

Thoughts: 2 ports are a little too close to each other (possibly allowing for only one miner to run at once). Compac + 2Pac works fine as the heatsinks face opposite directions, but 2Pac + 2Pac does not as the heatsinks are too big.

The red LED on the hub itself is a little bad in my opinion as it shines pretty much through the shell of the entire hub, but that may be because I just don't like LEDs at all :)

Design is good and solid plastic, and the included power adapter doesn't have an obnoxiously bright LED, unlike most Chinese power adapters I have owned. The fact that it comes with a power adapter of substantial power is good already. It is capable of powering a 2Pac at a minimum of 300mhz if you find the best position for the voltage to the ASIC. I will find the numbers for the Compac later.

(Sorry for the way-too-big first image, switched image hosts until I found the best one).

Is this the only hub capable of running 15-19 2PAC at 2amp at the moment ?

https://www.eyeboot.com/19-port-40a-usb3-hub.html

Or is it better to use 3x 7port hub with same power output ? Like this one

From the specs:
Quote
Freq   GH   Vcore   Power   J/GH
100   11.00   1.26   3.67   0.33
125   13.75   1.26   4.48   0.33
150   16.50   1.26   5.27   0.32
175   19.25   1.26   6.12   0.32
200   22.00   1.32   7.43   0.34
225   24.75   1.36   8.73   0.35

275   30.25   1.46   12.25   0.40
300   33.00   1.50   13.98   0.42
It looks like you need about 14W per port to run at 300Mhz. So, a 7-port data/charging hub with 2.1A per port should be able to run at 250 MHz? 5V * 2.1A = 10.5W...
Wondering if a 70W charger/hub like this https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Adapter-Support-Android/dp/B00L2LK164/ (https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Adapter-Support-Android/dp/B00L2LK164/) should be able to run at 250MHz wouldn't you think?
It does say it's a data hub, so it should work.

Hub enables connecting 7 additional USB devices. Forwards and backwards compatible with all USB 3.0, 2.0, or 1.1 host controllers and devices on Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix computers at USB 2.0 speeds up to 480 Mbps. Transfer rates are device and USB host controller dependent. Fully plug and play, devices can be hot-plugged, supports USB over-current protection. Requires no driver installation (although individual devices may require drivers).
I don't know exactly how the power is distributed into chains inside the hub, assuming that I would need a full 10W (5V * 2.1A) per port.

re: the Plugable hub and PM about pullin more power out.
All should see my reply which is:
Does not work. Been there, tried that. Each of the 3 internal regulators is only good for about 1.5A before the voltage out drops below the USB spec of min 4.4V. If voltage drops below that the regulator in the sticks turns off until it is reset.

Charging applications really don't care but powering a device via USB does care very much.

If I took a switching 5V 15A PSU, I should be able to wire all the power pins on any hub (which has easy access) to get the required amperage?
That would get me the required amperage.
If I read it correctly, 250MHz draws around 2A per port (10W / 5V = 2A). I should only need 10A to power 5 2Pac rigs.

Yep, would be perfect. Cut the internal power traces near the sockets so the logic drivers part still work and pigtail each power connection out from the socket pins using say 20ga wire and tie together at the supply. That way each socket can get full power if needed and not really affect the others.

Been thinking about doing that with an Intersil monolithic regulator dev board I have. The board is about the same footprint as the Plugable hub so they would stack very nicely... Given a healthy 12-24V main supply it'll put over 50A @ 5V ;)  Too much at work to do so just have not had the time to do the admittedly small amount of wiring needed.

As the old story goes: The cobblers children have no shoes...

My question is I have now 2 usb and 1 raspberry pi 3. What is now the best hub to use in this kind of setup?

What is the program/app should I download/run in order for it to start mining?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm newcomer. I just used Gekkoscience to mine BTC so I get the problem when cgminer running with 2 more Gekkoscience.
When I put 1 stick on hub usb => it's working good
But when I put 1 more on hub usb => the first one will degrease the hashrate and degrease to Zero => it will show Zombie
I have some pic when I get the problem. Pls help me

I'm going to take a guess and say that your hub is underpowered. If the hub doesn't have any power input from a power brick then it is not usable for more than one Compac, and if it doesn't have enough input power it won't work either. (Just looked at it, it indeed is the issue).

In my experience these hubs work pretty well for mining but their lifetime and build quality might not be the best.https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013OK10YM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503832033&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=70w+usb+hub&dpPl=1&dpID=31WLrxeZrqL&ref=plSrch

At this price point though, this is hard to beat. What you are looking for in mining hubs is high output per USB connector and lots of wattage for the entire hub (wattage is volts x amps)

Lovin' it :D

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Adapter-Support-Android/dp/B00L2LK164/ref=pd_sbs_147_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00L2LK164&pd_rd_r=2KEH574PN7ZYFVFXHXSE&pd_rd_w=lEXyf&pd_rd_wg=h8kAR&psc=1&refRID=2KEH574PN7ZYFVFXHXSE

is this the one you're talking about????

I need to find a good hub to power both my 2pacs and maybe a 3rd one.

if this is not the one..... any suggestions on a good hub to run 3 "2pacs"???

Thanks in advance.

Trying to find a USB Hub for my 2 2PACs and my RPi3.

All the links I have seen here are mostly pointed to Amazon. A lot from Amazon is not shipped to Denmark.
Could someone help me to find a USB hub that will fit the 2PAC and can be shipped to Denmark?

I'm not trying to be lazy, but I can't figure it out.

I would imagine that many of the same products are shipped around the world, and perhaps the only difference is the power supply that feeds the units. And that might be for local laws regarding safety approvals.

I found that Amazon have a UK division too. They ship to Denmark.
Thank you for your answer.

I trying to understand this, if you have max 3 2PACs sticks, this hub will be able to complete the task by adding them to Ports 2, 4 and 6.

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Adapter-Support-Android/dp/B00L2LK164/ (https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Adapter-Support-Android/dp/B00L2LK164/)

If you have more than 3 then it's a hub like this that have to be used:

Noob here, having some trouble chaining my USB 3.0 hub to RPi 3 with a 2.0 hub (Noticed it was mentioned earlier).  The hubs seem to chain together fine when hooked up to my PC but my sticks aren't detected when chaining with the Pi.  Not sure what I am missing, maybe  my 2.0 selection was poor?

I couldn't get my Anker's (I have 10 port models) to work with chaining at all.  Ended up buying some of these https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ALLWDFW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with the data cable connected to a 2.0 Superbgpag and the other to the Ankers for power.
Could you add a picture of that setup, please?

Just a thrown together desktop setup to tinker with when I need a break from work really.  Actually working on it now, so it's slightly sloppier than normal, but not by much.

There are two Ankers here, neither send data, just power. Data cables all go to the Superbpag.  The one in the front powers the two fans and I have one of the 2Pacs power-only cable running to charging power at the moment to test running all 7 at 300 (I have one plugged in to the charging only port on the back Anker as well).  The Anker in the back has the other six power-only cables attached and is hanging by the cables so that the 2Pacs are slightly angled from tension on the cables - I did have to play around with which connections for which 2pac worked best.

RPi3 is connected only to the Superbpag (and HMDI, keyboard, mouse).  Pi freezes occasionally with this setup and has to be restarted.  I think it's an issue with power (or PSU) going in to the Pi, not the USBs, but I'm not sure as I haven't taken the time to look at that yet.

The wire mesh basket it's hanging over is just something I happened to have lying around unused that fit the bill.  I originally tried to set this up with everything mounted upright using a Vans shoe box my son had.   : ]

Hi,
Thanks for the info here about hubs for Gekkoscience sticks. I have read through this hub topic and the 2PAC topic as thorough as possible. I'm not an electrical engineer so please excuse me If I write nonsense.

I would like to experiment with some stick miners and I have some questions about USB Hubs. The newest one in the bundle is 2PAC (from Bitshopper de). The other ones are older (RedFury style etc.). The plan is to connect them all to 1 USB Power Hub.

I'm located in Europe so the options for buying a good USB Hub are limited (unless you want to pay some serious import taxes). I have narrowed it down to 2 products:
  1. Plugable USB 2.0 7-Port High Speed Charging Hub 60W https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L2LK164/ (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L2LK164/)
  2. Anker 60W 3 PowerIQ Hub 7-Port USB 3.0 https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerIQ-Charging-Macbook-Surface/dp/B00VDVCQ84/ (https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerIQ-Charging-Macbook-Surface/dp/B00VDVCQ84/)

This topic already contains plenty of info about the Plugable Hub, thanks for that.

The Anker hub specifications:
  • It is a USB3 hub.
  • 12V 5A AC Power Supply.
  • Provides power -simultaneously- to max. 3 ports up to 2.1A, and 0.9A for all other ports.

The hub will be connected to a custom low-power Mini-ITX Linux Server which I use for various purposes, with an ASRock H110 Skylake motherboard and a Pentium G4500 cpu and 16GB of memory. The box is powered-up 24x7.

I plan to connect 2-3 2PAC's (not overclocked) to the USB Hub and fill up the other USB ports on the hub with older sticks and place a 120mm fan alongside the hub.

The older sticks are all < 0.9A.

The hub (USB3) does not have to work with a Raspberry Pi.

I have some specific questions about the Anker hub.

Q1: Is someone using this hub, do u recommend it?

Q2: Do you think the hub can handle this setup (2-3 2PAC's and 4-5 older sticks)?

Q3: Are the specs of this USB3 Hub (2.1A on max 3 ports simultaneously) also valid if you hook up a USB2 device such as the 2PAC?

Q4: Are the specs the same if I connect the USB hub to an USB2 connector on the Server motherboard (opposed to a USB3 connector)?

Thanks.

***UPDATE#1*** The three 2.1A ports of the Anker 60W are charge-only so they do NOT support data transfer. This means that this Anker hub is not suitable for the stickminers. I will go with the Plugable USB.
***UPDATE#2*** The USB Hub Plugable USB2.0 7-Port 60W arrived today and it is working fine. Thanks for the info in this thread :)

Spotted it last night browsing though Best Buy while waiting for a movie to start. The package claims 3.6A per port. And the price is right on par with Sipolar and other manufacturers making high-power-output USB data hubs.

Don't have experience but if you read the Q&A's the first one states:

"Only one of the ports is 3A, the others are 0.5A ports. Be aware that the full capacity is 3.5A so if you have a device that truly pulls 3A in the high power port the other ports will have diminished capacity."

4 ports / 3.5 = 1.14 max as I see it.

I have a question about the Blue Block Erupter 49 port Hubs (http://vi.vipr.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=262722823844&t=1507615122000&tid=10&category=44932&seller=2014hkpavlo&excSoj=1&excTrk=1&lsite=0&ittenable=false&domain=ebay.com&descgauge=1&cspheader=1&oneClk=1&secureDesc=0l) - The description on the website and eBay say:

"This is the most up to date version (V3) of the popular USB 2.0 hub, it has new improvements such as a built in 70A fuse. It is capable of supplying 0.5 - 1 amp per port. "

I have two of them and and they both came with 50 amp fuses installed (blade type replaceable).

If you take 50 amps and divide the 49 ports then it comes out to right around the 1 amp per port as they describe. However if these are the "most up to date version (V3)" and is designed for a 70 amp fuse then that would come out to nearly 1.5 amps per port.

I do not plan on filling the entire 49 ports per USB hub.

Main question is - is this blue block erupter 49 port hub limited by the chipset so that even replacing the 50 amp fuse with a 70 amp will make no difference or possibly did they just ship them with 50 amp fuses that they have in stock, and are actually capable of the 70 amp total.

I got an ad for surge protectors/USB chargers and had a thought.

I have four 2pacs.

If I got four USB 3 Y cables, two of these power blocks, and any old el cheapo USB 2 hub, I should be in good shape, right?
Power blocks:
http://a.co/3uJgw5y (http://a.co/3uJgw5y)

I could connect the 2pacs to the female end of the Y, connect the power side of the Y cable to the power blocks, and have data sent through the USB 2 hub through the data side of the Y.

It could work, right? From what I read, each of the two USB ports on the power block supplies 2.1A, which should be enough to power a 2pac at around 225-250Hz at the right voltage.

Thanks.

don't use the 50 amp  find a 35 amp

and what are you going to power it with?

it looks like it has a 24 pin  jack  and nothing else.

almost no atx  psu  provivdes    40 amps at 5 volts .

So with a 50 amp fuse  you can kill the atx.

Show me an atx better then 40 amps of 5v

most are 25 or 30 amps see below

Or you get a 5V PSU and wire it to an ATX jack. Two of my test stands are set up like that.

I did something similar with a single 2.1A charger and a Y cable and it worked just fine.  My only concern with your setup is whether the power supply can supply 2.1A to BOTH ports at the same time.

The description says:
"Two USB ports (2.1 Amp shared)"

Aha! Thanks for finding that (2.1A shared). I looked for it briefly, but couldn't find it right away. Of course they buried it in the description paragraphs, rather than showing it in the tech specs. So, it wouldn't really work as I thought if the 2pacs were overclocked. Shrug.

Both ATX PS are 38A on the 5v rail

Yes, just the 24 pin socket, however that could easily be jumped and wired straight into my 75 amp Astron (adjustable) PS .... Don't get carried away - I am not planning on doing that. hahaha.

I am still deciding exactly what I am going to do with these things when they get here. I just bought an L3+ this weekend and I could either run 14 per board (which leaves plenty of headroom) and play the lottery with those or run them with the L3+ pool which would give me about 630 mhs +/- or become a scalp-er on eBay and make all sorts of money.

Maybe I could sell one Blok Erupter 48 Port Hub, 14 ML2's, and an ATX PS all together in a bundle. If one sells, do the other one too.

Here's a simple little documentation of my setups.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/SCgYi97ESptqChXcE2HGQltCIz6AVj2wqDo88FbKR0f
This one is a single 2pac running 225Hz on an Amazon 4 port USB powered hub and a simple 5v fan. It's pretty much rock solid and throws almost no hardware errors. Anything above 225Hz won't start up. Seems like that is the maximum power the hub can provide. At $16, it's a pretty good power source. It's all connected to a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running cgminer.
http://a.co/bsDqq3V

https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/HAuMqFj9F6HrL2IkzzJsHAzD60JMULvtKqNYAgn2pOu
This one is more complex. I have a Plugable 7 port USB2 hub running 3 2pacs running at 200Hz and an Arctic fan. Occasionally one or two devices will zombie out, but it runs well for a day or two. I also have a 5v fan pointed at the top 2pac to keep it cool. All is connected to an older miniPC running Ubuntu 16.04 and cgminer. I've found that if I try to push the miners to 225Hz, two of the three fail to start. I have plans to split out power to an ATX power supply and try to push the freq above 200Hz.

That's it for now.

Claims 5V input -60 Watts / 12 Amps 7 ports

If it's true, would be a good power supply, or y-cable mod but kind of pricey.

I went with the plugable 7 port 60W and run 3 at 225MHz and an arctic breeze fan with no problem.

https://www.ebay.com/p/60w-Multi-7port-USB-Charger-12a-Rapid-Charging-Station-Desktop-Travel-Hub-iPhone/9012536138?iid=322670493147&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D48420%26meid%3Df9129ae088754d37a3cc3c0b065490f8%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D232634766486%26itm%3D322670493147&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Claims 5V input -60 Watts / 12 Amps 7 ports

If it's true, would be a good power supply, or y-cable mod but kind of pricey.

I went with the plugable 7 port 60W and run 3 at 225MHz and an arctic breeze fan with no problem.

I agree with avulusionist, the plugable 60W 2.0 hub is by far the best option IMO.  its 29.99 on Amazon, a lot cheaper option than some of these other hubs + offers more power.

I am using the Plugable 60W USB 2.0 hub and it does work fairly well as long as you know its quirks.
Quick guide to follow:

Stated before but 3 sticks is the max. I don't care what speed you run them at, stock or over clocked 3 is the max.
Must run on ports 1,3,5 or 2,4,6 and a fan can go into slot 7 but it draws from port 5,6,7 combo. I run my fans with a separate supply.
Max frequency you can run the sticks at and not have it go zombie or get a USB error is 237.50Mhz and that may be pushing it as each hub may differ slightly  (225 Mhz might be more stable for you).
If you lose power for any reason you must manually push the power button to turn it back on. Use a small UPS to keep it alive if you plan to run unattended.
Set voltage to the lowest setting .69 - .70 across the ASIC voltage and you shouldn't get any hardware errors
237.50Mhz should get you between 72Ghs - 76Ghs
Supplied power brick is reliable and only gets warm not hot
Over all price point is great
I ran 3 sticks at 250Mhz for a while but eventually one stick goes zombie or you get a USB error. Might be 30 minutes might be 6 hours but it happens every time at that frequency. You also have to up the ASIC voltage to .70-.71 to get no hardware errors.

If you are good with all of that I would recommend getting them.

How to measure the ASIC voltage see here

As I discovered with my 7-port, 60W charging hub from Plugable -- pop it open and look at how the power is distributed.

On the Plugable, it takes 12vdc in and has 3 buck regulators taking that down to 5v  for the USB plugs. That said... 1 regulator feeds ports 1 & 2, the 2nd regulator feeds ports 3 & 4, the 3rd feeds ports 5-7. See where this is going?

Given that you can only use 3 ports, do you still need 60W or is the 25W unit acceptable.  I would be using the Pluggable 7 port hub to run a couple 2PAC sticks and I can order 2 Pluggable 25W units for the price of the 60W unit.

Thanks for this. Have the same hub.
Question: Any luck chaining them together? I have 4 2pac's and have been trying to get the 4th to keep running but no matter what powered hub I try it runs for a few hours then stops.

I ask because I am using a RPi W with one USB port.

Thanks

No, running on a windows server so plenty of USB ports. I do have one of these that I run 3 Pod miners through (non powered) and it works great.
https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Mountable-Rugged-Industrial-Port/dp/B003AVPUZG
(cracked open the above linked hubs and they only have 2 regulators in them so 2 sticks max no matter how much power you put into it)

I would try a good non powered 2.0 hub plugged into your RPi then 2 of the Plugables powered hubs into that - 2 sticks each Plugable hub. If you already have another powered hub then try both of those into the basic hub, see if that gets you any farther without a drop.

Not sure anyone has cracked open the smaller 25W unit to see how many voltage regulators it has. The 60w one has 3 shared between 2 ports, 2 ports, 3 ports so we know how it works. The 25w may only have 1 regulator that splits up the current between all ports which could mean drops for the 2Pac sticks if running more than 1. All depends on how they are set up.

So this is what I am using to run 6 at 243.75Mhz for about 150GH/s - 85 Watts at the wall.
I also put small fans on each stick.

Have a quick question as still relatively new to mining things...

I have this hub: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIADA26E73842

Which works fine with 2 of the GhekkoScience ASIC miners in it (2 x https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XBWK2W5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and 1 similar but from a different supplier on Amazon)...

But whenever I plug my 3rd miner into it, the 3rd one drops from 15Gh/s to around 20Mh/s... Am I doing something stupidly noob with things? The USB should be able to handle it shouldn`t it?

I aim to upgrade things eventually to the 10 port one mentioned in this thread a few times, but for now, 3 of the miners in this Hub should work shouldn`t they?

I have a small desk fan which is keeping the 2 in there now nice and cool so I really want to be able to plug the 3rd in in there also as currently I have to have it in one of the other PC USB ports in order to keep it running at 15Gh/s but this means I don`t have it close to a fan and so is going to overheat a lot...

Anybody know what I`m doing wrong or able to point out the probably obvious thing to everybody else thing I haven`t likely done to run all 3?

 *Edit*
I may be a complete muppet and have this plugged in to a USB2 port... I will need to wait until I get home to confirm but this would likely result in the above issue wouldn`t it with the lower transfer rates?

Pj.

Not sure, but I am new to the whole mining thing..

I checked last night and I am definitely plugged in to the USB 3 ports, but whenever I plug the 3rd mining stick into the Hub (also USB 3), I get 2 x xxGh/s and the third drops down to around 6Kh/s...

I don`t understand what I`m doing wrong with things...

What is the third stick? Your previous post makes it sound like you have two 2Pacs and one of something else.

Ah, sorry, they are all 2PACs, just from differently named suppliers through Amazon (BitMiner Joe, ZLR Inc and I can`t find the 3rd for some reason).  It also seems that it isn`t consistent which one drops... If I remove  any of the sticks, to leave 2, then the 2 remaining return to around 10Gh/s... But they are all the same 2PAC usb stick... It`s just when I have all 3 in the hub that it happens... Plug the 3rd into another USB port, even a USB2 port, all is as it should be again...

Sounds like the common factor is your hub. It's probably weak, or at least has weak wiring for internal 5V distribution. When a new stick is plugged in, the current draw to light it up probably causes a sag on the internal 5V that trips up one of the three sticks.

Or there's some signal issue with your hub that's misbehaving with multiple USB2 devices (which these are).

Have you looked around to see if other people had problems with that model hub?

I have the same Anker hub as you have. I cant recommend it. At least not for mining. I had trouble getting miners to work consistently and I had to replug them to get them started whenever I had to reboot. It also doens't work with Raspberry Pis.

I just bought the 10 port Sipolar hub. It just works. Both with the miners and the Pi.

I recently acquired a Block Erupter 49 port USB 2.0 Hub Rev 2.00 (Red board) to use with my 2PAC and Terminus pod that I purchased from sidehack as well as some miscellaneous USB miners.  Finding information about these hubs are more elusive than I imagined.  Does anyone know of a support thread or other resource to post my questions to?

1) Who was the OEM/Primary distributor for these back in the day?  Asicminer? Eyeboot?  Someone else?
2) The unit has what appears to be a 25A automotive style fuse.  Does that mean that is fused for 12V 25A?
3) 25A would only allow 500mA per port with only 500mA extra to handle startup surge.  Does that seem right?
4) Is it likely that the traces would allow more power than 500 mA if the board's total power rating is not exceeded?

More goal is to run more 2PAC and other USB miners as the price is right and I acquire them.  I should have asked what fuse was on the board since I have read about other 49 port Block Erupter hubs having 50 or 70A fuses.  Does it seem likely that I can run a few higher-power usb devices like 2PAC or Moonlanders on this board?

Thanks for any advise or pointers to better threads.

Entirely likely a noob question here but...

I have the siploar 10 port hub and 6 2Pac miners... When I had 4 in the hub, the time to payout (0.001 BTC) was 1 year, when I plugged the latest 2 in, it went up to 1 year 3 months!!!

The average usage ranges from 7GH/s - 16 GH/s on all 6, but it seem to not be helping in any way the output.

I also seemt o have no upload speeds now on the computer so wondering if I broke something or overloaded something?

$5 Purex 120mm case fan using a home made dc barrel to molex adapter 12vdc wall wart powering a $5 evercool single fan controller.

RasberryPi3 is now updated with Pixel and I followed Jake36 post to install novak's cgminer-gekko-rev2.

What is your transfer throughput like? AQre all those 15 Gh/s miners? I am having issues with 6 not sending any more than 45 Gh/s on average through...

Probably not.

If memory serves, that guy is 60W...so if running all 10 is the goal, you'd be looking at ~150MHz ea. And, that's only if you can get the Vcore dialed in near just right across all 10.

I think you'd be better of trying to get ~5 running at 250MHz ea. on that hub.

Good luck.

Those were 10 single chip Compacs running at default freq, the hub was powered by a 7amp brick that I had left over from the failed U3's disaster of Bitmain's. The fan had it's own small brick for power as did the RPi. The weakest link was the RPi which would randomly lockup and have to reboot.

Unfortunately, even though I had surge protectors on all of my gear, the building was struck by lightning while I was at work. The surge took out all five of my desktop PC's and monitors. The low voltage afterwards that my 2 S7-LN's, these 10 Compacs, and 10 2PACS were connected too caused the main 110v A/C line to melt and destroyed most of the gear including the ceiling fan in the room which turned out to be on the same circuit.

Mornin',

A few years ago I bought one of these cheap usb hubs:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Port-USB-Hub-AC-Power-Adapter-ON-OFF-Switch-High-Speed-For-PC-Laptop-MAC-/232257938944

Yesterday I added a 5V/2A (phone charger?) power supply to it which seems to work fine.

When I plug my 2Pac in it it's up to 7 times faster than plugged into the RasPi3 directly.

But when I plug in a second 2Pac this second one becomes active and the first one seems to drop in speed and the blue/white led stops flashing.

Can these cheap hubs be modded with some wiring to have more power on the ports?

Your power supply is too weak. At the very best, you are going to get 10W out of that power supply, but likely much lower. One 2PAC can pull over 10W depending on your settings.

ok so struggling here a little bit

i bought one of these under the advisement of a buddy- he is running 10 moonlanders in one of these and said for me to get one to run my five 2pacs

https://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-Hub-Aluminum-Mounting/dp/B076HLY2L9

but its not working

is it the hUb?? or is it something else going on??  its a powered mining hub, so why isnt it working
my guess is that not enough power being supplied??

I have the 2pacs running just fine if i plug direct to usb on computer - but as soon as i use hub- forget it- nothing working and no miners mining

please help

I'd talk to your buddy who already has a working setup. The biggest difference between 2Pacs and Moonlanders is the required USB driver, but hardware good for one should be good for the other.

Newer boards have 50A built in fuse now.

Well the maximum the hub can supply is 60 watts so running @ full power for 1 hour = 0.060kWh.... aka, 60Wh
Someone flunk simple math? ;)

yes it should do, you could even change the fuse if you wanted to.....for the new 50A boards you can check them out here:

https://www.eyeboot.com/block-erupter-49-port-usb.html

I really appreciate your time and information!  Do you think that the Version 1 Red Boards would safely accept a 50A fuse?

So they were badly made. Pull that fuse and put in a 20 amp. As they tended to melt.

Asicminer built them.  I owned 128 sticks and could run about 40 on three hubs for a total of 120 sticks.

You can pull 1.1 amps on a port if you run about 15 sticks on the hub.

Sifting through all of the garbage out there and finally may have found one or two decent options for a hub. Not sure if klintay has/had anything to do with designing or making these, but he's really the only one I know making USB hubs specifically for mining (like these new ones I just found). The company was once SiPolar (which I'm fairly certain is/was owned by klintay), but seems to be using the name ICONE now. Anyway, both hubs are basically the same, except one is twice the power of the other. Prices listed below are/were the current prices in USD at time of this post, and include any shipping charges..

  • ICONE 10-Port USB 2.0, 120 Watt, 2.1A per Port [$84.99] - http://a.co/d/fE7uOfb (http://a.co/d/fE7uOfb)
  • ICONE 10-Port USB 2.0, 60 Watt, 0.6A per Port [$50.99] - http://a.co/d/eAcOT6W (http://a.co/d/eAcOT6W)
  • Sipolar 10-Port USB 2.0, 5V 20A, 2.1A per Port [$81.00] - https://ebay.us/cusXMz (https://ebay.us/cusXMz)
  • Sipolar 16-Port USB 2.0, 5V 3A, 0.3A per Port [$60.50] - https://ebay.us/4tiJ5v (https://ebay.us/4tiJ5v)

  • All of klintay's (eyeboot/sipolar) USB hubs on eBay: http://www.ebaystores.com/Eyeboot/USB-Hubs-/_i.html?_trksid=p4634.c0.m322&_fsub=9949982010&_sid=518451540& (http://www.ebaystores.com/Eyeboot/USB-Hubs-/_i.html?_trksid=p4634.c0.m322&_fsub=9949982010&_sid=518451540&)

To be clear klintay has sold eyeboot gear listed below

49 port = well made
19 port usb 2 = well made
19 port usb 3 = well made
10 port usb 3 = well made also named sipolar

Above all good.

Below not good..

Asicminer 49 port not made by klintay as far as I know and not well made.

Hey Phil, what do you think about this hub? I've never seen it before and just now found it on Amazon. It's a 12-port USB 3.0 hub made by "coolgear". You must find your own AC power adapter, with a 3-pin plug, and it's pretty beefy looking. Perhaps it should be for its $114.95 USD price, and keep in mind, you will need to purchase a compatible power supply (unless you're Phil and have one just laying around). Anyway, let me know what you guys think!  ;)

over priced and the ports are too close.

this one

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sipolar-10-Port-USB-2-0-Powered-Hub-with-power-supply-5V-20-Amp-2A-per-port/352409900554?

10 ports 81 with shipping   so 8.10 a port  comes with psu.

a 250 freq clock  seems to use 11 watts at the wall  so the psu rates for 120 watts x .8 = 96

this means  you can do 8 sticks. Maybe

so far it does 3 sticks 2x newpacs and 1x 2pac perfectly with 2 fans.

I know I can fit  6 sticks with the spacing and 6 sticks should pull 66 watts which a 120 watt brick should handle.

your listing has 12 ports for 112 + a power supply will cost $$  at least 28 or maybe 32

so 12 ports are close to  12 dollars each and they are close to one another  so you need  2x usb to 1 x usb wires.

So far at the current pricing the sipolar looks good.

What we don't know is will it do   more then 3 sticks at 250 freq.  I get a fourth stick tomorrow that will help testing more.

Nice, I have six 2pacs on a kdata 10 port 12V hub running ok. A zombie here and there still. Sipolar has been more consistent though. Waiting for newpacs to arrive here this coming week and hopefully soon the GS hub sidehack has been talking about. I think I drool more at night dreaming about these lately.

I purchased the 120 Watt (2.1A per port) 10-port USB 3.0 hub from Amazon HERE (http://USB 2.0 hub 60W and 120W with 10 Ports (120W (12V/10A)) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7F5WV2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qRU8Bb384N9W4)

I also found some inexpensive dual male to single female USB 3.0 'Y' splitter cables for extra power. I currently own one of these same cables, and it seems to transfer more power than a standard USB 2.0 cable of the same kind (so long as you have a USB 3.0 hub).

The hub is already in hand, but I'm waiting on more NewPac sticks to fill it up and run five (5) at once with frequencies of 250-300 Mh/z. I will be sure to post the results with pics in a few days.

EDIT [2018 NOVEMBER 27]: So, I've had this hub for several days now, and I am NOT impressed. In fact, my 60W Plugable 7-Port USB 3.0 hub works better than this (more expensive) USB 2.0 hub. I will very likely be returning the ICONE 120 Watt 10-Port USB 2.0 hub I recently purchased from Amazon, as I'm not getting the power as listed in the item description. Will keep everyone updated if/when I find a better hub for these sticks..

Well this showed up on our site. https://www.minefarmbuy.com/accessories/tripplite-usb-hub

Though I'm really happy with the Gekko Science demo sidehack sent and I heard there's going to be updates to it before release. Thanks again for the nudge to have them let me test btw sh. I guess I did sneak away with all the 2pacs before and this round they just told me to keep the newpac demo's we did our media with. 2% commission only goes so far for these guys. Keep them busy for me. mineon.

What is the spacing of the usb slots like on the Tripplite?

Mainly interested in how many Newpacs it can support?

It looks like it could support 16 @ 300MHz or less with 5v per slot if the spacing is adequate otherwise only 8 if they are too close.

Spacing should be good if they're all facing the same way I'm told. This listed to work on 110; 120; 127; 200; 208; 220; 230; 240 and there is a 230v and 110/120v 32 port version as well in a 2U design. All are 2.4A per port.

USB2 hub, total of 5V 18A provided by three high-efficient 6A regulators powered by 12VDC. Ports are marked by group - 1,2,5; 3,4; 6,7

Accessible 12V pin header on the side for hooking up a 12V cooling fan. Port 1 can also be used to power USB fans with sticks in ports 2-7. This arrangement is optimal since heatsinks would face the rear (cables end) of the hub, with blinky lights visible at the front.

12V power can come from a relatively standard 2.1/5.5mm barrel jack or a PCIe 6-pin.

With this hub and a suitable 12VDC power source and fan it's possible to run six NewPacs at 600MHz each for 800GH total.

Let me know if you want one. Or two. Or a bunch, that'd be cool too.

Hubs are up and in stock!
https://www.419mining.com/shop/cables/gekkoscience-7-port-base-hub/
make sure you get a power supply for them as well.
We currently have 7A hubs in stock, while you cant max out 6 sticks at at 650Mhz, it should get you up there. As soon as we finish our testing, i can post more specifics.

10A would be idea, but make sure you get good quality. or run on a 6pin computer power supply.

Ill be posting to eBay and amazon tomorrow!

and dont forget, buy from our online store and ear loyalty points for future discounts!

testing the new Gekkoscience 7 port hub now.... 7 newpacs running smoothly @ 450 Mhz for a total of approx 700 GH
using a good solid 12v 10a psu, so it has plenty more juice to go....going to start turning up the speed slowly  ;D

You won't be able to go too much higher speed unless you can drop the voltage. Remember one 6A regulator shares to three ports, so if you use all three you're limited to 10W per stick instead of 15W.

so four sticks set 2 to each regulator   would mean 15 watts a stick at truly high speeds correct?

Best is six sticks with 2 to each regulator, but you can do 4 if you want.

I figured brick  would stress at 6 x 15 = 90 watts

vs 4 x 15 = 60 watts which is only 50% of the brick.

I didn't say anything about the brick. Talking about the hub itself. There's only three regulators, so if you want to push past 10W per stick you need to only put two sticks per regulator, which means a max of 6 on the hub for the really high per-stick speeds.

I put together a handful of sidehack sticks (2x Compac and 1x 2Pac) into the ultimate mining machine. Right now I've got a 1 in 9 million chance of hitting a block each day, wish me luck :)

Here's a pic of the rig in action:

https://i.imgur.com/OThV5qX.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/OThV5qX.jpg)

Here's a pic partway through construction, that shows the guts of this monstrosity:

https://i.imgur.com/X0gujhE.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/X0gujhE.jpg)

The exhaust fan is powered by USB (it's a 12v fan so 5v makes it nice and quiet) and so is the fan attached to one of the compacs. The fan attached to the compac is a former laptop CPU fan that's been repurposed for extreme (ly sketchy) cooling.

Below is a series of progress pics:

https://i.imgur.com/5iJfSdv.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/5iJfSdv.jpg) https://i.imgur.com/CRJtNNK.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/CRJtNNK.jpg) https://i.imgur.com/D4Z4X09.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/D4Z4X09.jpg) https://i.imgur.com/jRBnpfK.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/jRBnpfK.jpg) https://i.imgur.com/CL3LAT0.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/CL3LAT0.jpg)

Note the sketchy off-brand thermal paste and the very secure method of installing the heatsink with electrical tape. Despite this, it runs far cooler than the other compac, probably because the fan is designed for cooling a 30W CPU. Too bad my hub is too weak to crank the voltage up. :'(

It should look like 18 Newpacs in 3 GekkoScience Hubs (wicked)... cooled by 4 12V CPU fans and 3 USB fans (wicked cool?)... There's also half a dozen GS 2Pacs on an Eyeboot hub... also with USB powered fans... and a GS Terminus pod and another USB fan (not shown). Rock solid...

It's just an exhibition, not a competition... please, no wagering...

They are powered by the 12V outs on those mighty fine GekkoScience Hubs that I picked up from MineFarmBuy... Knowing the troubles people have had over the years finding suitable hubs for USB miners, isn't it fantastic that sidehack would design a robust hub designed specifically for mining! They're like PB & J, man! They go together real fine. Thanks to those who've helped to get them on my desk. This arrangement is in my living room... the noisiest item is the old laptop!

Nice, the newpacs have been flawless for me on the gs hub as well and 2pac I throw on there too. I only get zombies on the 10 port 5A hub I bought from amazon which only has 4 2pac's on it now and still gives me issues. I thought about trying a brick but 6 pin from psu just works well where I have mine set up and with 1600w I can run a few of sidehacks hubs.

Glad everything is working out. I also heard you caught my Easter egg I left for you. Glad you saw it before it got pulled. ;)

Yup, Newpacs are awesome! I am running 32 NEWPACs at the same time on ONE usb hub  :)

They are fine at 300 Mhz, anything above that they probably need the v. core altered to run stable. One was giving me issues with "Toggling ASIC nRST to reset" msg, which I think is because that particular one needs more juice or doesn't like the freq.

Eyeboot 32 Port 240W USB Hub
https://www.eyeboot.com/32-port-usb-hub.html
this hub is relatively cheap when compared to the other large hubs options out there and it comes with dual power supplies (2 x 12V10A psu).

That looks like an absolute beast!!

Just checked out your usb hubs. I'm a little confused about the one you linked. It says in the "Package Contents" that is comes with 1x 12v/8A  brick. But it says in the title 2x 12v/10A bricks?

yeah 1 brick for 1 column, the hub has 2 x standard barrel plug connectors

Hey guys, got a new hub version. It's based off the other one but with a few improvements.

http://gekkoscience.com/img_stash/base_hub/DSCN2408.JPG

http://gekkoscience.com/img_stash/base_hub/DSCN2409.JPG

The first thing you'll notice, if the pictures load correctly, is it's got a shiny metal housing instead of plastic. That's a definite improvement.

The second thing you'll notice is it's got 8 ports instead of 7. Per the diagram on the underside, one of those 8 ports is power-only. It's still 7 data ports, just like the black one, but the 8th power port means you can run a Pi and a USB fan off it without taking one of the high-current ports. It's still got the 12V fan header too, don't worry about that.

The dummy port and port 1 are also powered by a secondary regulator, which means using them won't take any power from the high-current ports.

And don't tell anyone I told you this, but that secondary regulator is actually rated for 3A instead of 2, so if you don't use Port D and are careful about it, you could still run 7 stickminers at full speed.

Right now it's still priced same as the black one.

For those that buy from resellers (like us), please be kind and remember we do have a stock of the older but still perfectly good black plastic hubs.

Title: Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread.
Post by: sidehack on February 19, 2019, 07:46:20 PM
It'd be completely understandable if no reseller sold any of these metal hubs until the plastic ones were gone. That's what I did, after all, so almost zero of these have been distributed so far.

Also you might notice this one looks a bit rough. We're using these in place of Plugables for bench testing of sticks and stuff, so this one's seen some full-time duty the last several days. The brand-spanking-new ones will be super shiny instead of super smudged.

great innovation with the power port, this is a really good idea as i had raspberry pi play up when trying to run them off the same hub as my miners before.
the new metal case looks really slick. i will order some now and start stocking them straight away.

Although not listed on the site, you can place a request for them from Mine.Farm.Buy: https://minefarmbuy.com/contact

I just completed an order for two more Hubs. They'll get you the shiny new 8-port ones from sidehack at GekkoScience if that's what you request.

No. Hub says it does 240 watts.  My guess is just under 2th as he would need to provide about 360 watts to do 3.2th.

I have 6 2pacs.

Will the plastic Gekko Hub run all 6 at 300 MHZ on a PCIE 6pin? If not what am I looking at @spec vs what PCIE cable is capable of (non fire hazard). Or what would I need to max all 6?

It should be enough to run all six above 500MHz.

Oh right, 2Pacs. 300MHz is about the top-end for 2Pacs, but that hub should be able to do it provided you keep them cool.

Title: Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread.
Post by: Confused Coin? on March 17, 2019, 09:05:31 PM
Yeah I wasn't sure. My maths were saying that the 75watts (spec) from 1x 6 pin pcie off a power supply would be about 6.25amps*, but your chart said that it would take 2.80 amps per unit or 16.8a/18a that the hub can put out to get 300mhz on all. My Plugables do 5a but they can't even do 125mhz without constant resets and zombies that I have to reset the router or reseat the sticks. I have 2 fans on them.

I want to be able to run them higher.

I cant afford to drop $350 to replace them all, but if I can start with the router and get these guys running better, I can upgrade the sticks later. Can you mix 2pacs and Newpacs?

*One guy said PCIe can run over spec, but I don't want a fire hazard.

Post by: sidehack on March 17, 2019, 09:29:24 PM
PCIe, if the cables are well-made, can run way the heck over spec. Even an 18AWG cable should be good for 150W, assuming the power supply behind it is solid.

VH's driver maintenance is so good, it'll work with every GekkoScience miner at the same time.

Good bricks are hard to source at decent prices but I think 419 has some. We just set people up with a psu, and if mining in home a desk top psu is quiet. If you need a router send us what you're after.

Saw this power brick on Amazon.. It might actually max out the power needs for the Gekko Hub as it puts out 10A vs the 7A the 419 brick has.. Until I found that I thought I was going to have to put the full power supply package and then just plug in more hubs as I got them to make sure I could run 6 of the NewPacs on the Hub.. Also saw a couple interesting fan options probably overkill for the hubs to keep them cool but better be safe then sorry.. I would think even if one fan failed it would keep them from overheating..

Power Brick: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z9X4GLW

Dual 120mm Fans with 3 speed settings: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JLV4BWC

Im going to probably buy my first newpac this week and hopefully get it up and running and then get the hub and such to expand soon.

Fans look fine, I can't recall the spec of brick you should be looking for.

You could a get $40 500W psu and have flexibility for at least three hubs maybe four than buying bricks.

Careful on the Amazon power bricks, most are cheap junk in a pretty case. We sell one that we tore down to the bits to verify it was good quality. Has a 3 year warranty and passed all the certification test. You will pay more but you get what you pay for, or you get a fire, its that simple.

We are planning on getting 10A bricks, but its not cheap bringing in a full case of units to sell one or two. The other option like MineFarmBuy said, a good quality PSU if you dont mind the aesthetics/noise of it.

@419Mining,

I'm interested in that power supply,  do you know what the power efficiency is for it under decent load like 5-6 Amps?

I'm getting pretty terrible efficiency with the blocks I have, USB meter reporting ~9watts and the thing's pulling 12+ at the wall for ~80%.

Review of Acasis USB 3.0 Hub
Photo of the setup https://i.imgur.com/1czvtRM.jpg

Example Link https://www.amazon.com/Splitter-Adapter-Individual-Switches-Computer/dp/B07BNBLXTS/

Products I have
7 Ports US Version (w/3A PSU) purchased from Amazon
2x 10 Ports Version (w/4A PSU) purchased from AliExpress and imported from China.

Pros & Vendor Claims
  • Individual port power button - Good for turning on/off your RPI or hard reboot 2PAC
  • 2.1Amps 5V per port (Vendor claimed) and I have tested this to be relatively true
  • Hub recognized as a smart USB power hub by uhubctl utility for software power reset.  Have NOT tested this.
  • Work with RPI 3 flawlessly thus far running 12+ hours

Cons
The supplied PSU is pretty weak, the 7 ports came with a 12v@3A and 10 ports 12v@4A.  I am currently running the pictured hub with my Anker 5A PSU pulling 49watts at the wall measure by Kill A Watt.

Summary
I like these as they have individual power buttons and worked with the RPI and has uhubctl support.  Uhubctl allows you to software cycle a logical hub and port to hard power cycle a zombied stick even though I have not had a chance to test it out since the NewPac has been good enough to not zombied out.  Supplied PSU has better efficiency than my Anker PSU even though there are weak and would only be enough to power 3 sticks.

As you can see from the photo, my sticks has modified heatsinks (40x40x20mm and 60x60x10mm).  The heatsink in horizontal fin position worked out very well, I can hold my finger on any of them permanently with the fan blowing and not get burnt, though the one with slightly less airflow in the front is a bit warmer than the other.  The other 3 are lukewarm.  The downside to these mods is obviously the GS hub is not really an option for me as I would only be able to use 4 ports at best.  That's why I used this hub with a single linear row of USB ports instead.

Testing condition is 4x NewPac running at 450Mhz.
https://i.imgur.com/nvVfTkR.png

Will await more $ available to get the 7A PSU from 419Mining and see how many sticks I can run.  I have 5 NewPac, a 2Pac.  And yes, the spacing does allow me to fit 6 in there even with the 20mm heatsinks.

Caveat found during testing with RPI
There is some sort of flaw in the setup when plugging in too many NewPacs would trigger a kernel panic on Pi Zero W, though there can be multiple causes there from power feedback into the Zero, to too many adapters to get it hooked up.  Since running 4 x NewPac with a Pi 3B it has operated 1 day 14 hours plus at of this posting without kernel panic.  Previously I was able to get runtime up to 3 days continuously with a connected Pi Zero W and 2x NewPac,  but when plugging in 4x NewPac the Zero W kernel went crazy after a few minutes to 15 minutes max.  The crashes are observed with multiple known good Zero using multiple known good 32GB Samsung EVO Select cards.  The problem appeared more with the Zero than the hub, though I do not have further time nor equipment to test conclusively and have given up using Zeros as controllers.

I dont have any of the units set up on a test bed right now but they are DOE Level VI rated at 88% efficient. They have less than 1mA of power leakage so most of the efficiency is lost as heat but at 88%, unless you buy a meanwell or a titanium PSU, you wont get better quality. When I get to the shop tonight, Ill see if i can run a few tests for you.  Sidehack may also have a quick answer, we sent him a few test samples when we brought them into the states.

No worries, don't trouble yourself with tests. Upper 80% really great for these little AC/DC blocks,  no good way of getting better than that without spending nearly $100 on a real ATX PSU anyhow.

Just put in order for 3, looking forward to seeing how far I can take the Acasis USB hub and my 5 NewPacs.  ;D

Ran 6x 2pacs off PSU 6 pin (evga 430, 80+) for about 2 hours and now it won't detect anything.

I was running them at 175 which should be 9.72a max.

The lights are all solid green on the 2pacs, but they aren't being seen by windows. There's a little red light under 7 and 4.

I can feel the 2pacs in 3,4, and 5 are all very warm to the touch. 7 is mildly warm. 2 and 6 are pretty much cold. Didn't mess with 1.

Tried another PSU and USB wire, no luck.

On the black hub, I believe the 6/7 regulator also feeds the hub controller. If something went wrong with that, it'd drop out.

Not sure what would have gone wrong that a power-cycle wouldn't fix, especially at only 175.

A stronger fan than my setup with the plugables. I have all 6 running back in the plugables now :-\

Tried turning off the hub for several minutes, then turning back on(including unplugging), and switching the power supply on and off several times. I noticed that the sticks plugged into 2,5 would flash red as they went off where the other 4 would go immediately off from green.

I was increasing the speed in steps due to 3 of the sticks being 2pacs "seconds". As stated, all 6 are working again on the old hubs.

https://i.ibb.co/6rgsGDr/gekkoscience-7-port-usb-hub1.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/r4gHVBt/gekkoscience-7-port-usb-hub2.jpg

it has a new metallic casing this time, slightly slimmer and a more sleek look and feel. Ports 1-7 are for data, port 8 is charge only :)
diagram on the back shows the max power draw for the groups of usb ports on the hub, very useful and removes the guess work

All you need is this hub and one of these 12V 10A power bricks for $15 $12 (au/eu/uk/usa plugs available) (https://www.eyeboot.com/12v-10a-psu-barrel-plug.html) and you are good to go  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;)
You won't find a more reliable usb hub and power supply.

Maybe a stupid question.

But you can't use 8-port for mining? EDIT: Never mind, I misunderstood what you wrote. :)

How many NewPAC can the hub on the left handle?

Both hubs are designed to handle 6 USB Mining Sticks, the additional ports are for small addons (Raspberry Pi, USB Fan) that require less than 2 Amps of power.
Both the black and the aluminum hub group the ports into 4 sections, ports 6 and 7 share 6Amps, 3 and 4 share 6 amps, 5 and 2 share 6 amps. Port 1 and D(on the aluminum) are on a 2Amp max fuse. the big difference is that port D(aluminum only) is not connected to the hub itself, so it can only provide power, similar to a wall brick for cellphone charging.

Theoretically, you could run 7 sticks in both hubs, but the 7th miner would have to be run at lower speeds to keep it under the amp limit.

Hi! Check our R&D :) Here is Big One Usb Hub as a one module from our convector-miner product, but not about that now.

So the one module can still heat the room without noise! Also it's our test 33 Clarke-chips USB sticker.

Looks more like a board than hub. I'm more interested in what it actually is.

so...i bought an arctic USB fan that likes to blow up USB ports it gets plugged into. I haven't pulled the hub apart yet to inspect, but ports D and 1 are now dead. Are the board components easily sourced so I can fix my hub?

Wow. Never heard of that before. They've obviously upgraded them since I bought mine  ;D

Awesome experiment. Totally how much this will cost, if I wanto buy 1 from u.

Hi! Thank you :) One module costs around $450, we have already ordered a 10 separate housing for the modules. In order to send them to the reviews of journalists or people who can do a review and publish

So what's the speed and power consumption of this device. Also could this device be connected to USB port alone and get power from the system USB port alone.

That conversation is probably more appropriate for a different thread. This'n is specific to stickminers and hubs that are good for them.
