So yeah, hopefully McDonald, Dominos pizza, and many others will follow after this. I thought that this kind of decisions are taken by the creators of the franchise but It looks like It's not since It's starting on Russia.

Wow, that is huge news (for Russia)! Huge as in: if this type of organization recognizes the currency, adopts the currency and basically says: this is legit, then more people will know about it, use it and therefore the usage of BTC will grow and with that the value too. Very exciting.

Great news! Now some pizza services should accept BTC, then I'm satisfied :)

Is it every Burger King in Russia or just a select few? If it's all of them then it could be really good.

Its good news if you ask me but the issue here is how is it going to work out considering the fact that its been reported about Russia's intention to create its own bitcoin which I see as a potential hostile environment for bitcoin which might include but not limited to merchants who accepts the currency. But lets hope the Russian government allows for fair play of both currency then we will see which one is more stronger and more popular.

Still it will take some time to all the programms to be written and tested succsessfully. It is really greart news, not only for Russia, but for all the World. Russia has just taken initiative to be the first country where cryptocurrencies are gaining value. :)

According to article,  "a Moscow branch of the burger chain has started piloting Bitcoin payments, with officials now confirming a nationwide rollout" meaning after the implementation on Moscow Branch (the first Burger King Russian franchise), it will now be expanded nationwide.

Hope Burger King branches here in our country as we always take a break on Burger King during office hours.

That news make me happy to me and this is so important to for bitcoin users and it is so important for bitcoin becuase so it will bring so much new bitcoin users and this mean is bitcoin prise will be great for future so we are in true system .

This is actually crazy news. Burger King is a huge chain. If it works, expect other major chains to join in on the action and make Bitcoin mainstream!

I can understand that people at cointelegraph are worried by the recent correction and want to speed up the recovery, but it's not the right way ;)

This is a big step in adopting bitcoin in market not just in Russia because after the news spreads they other franchisers may consider accepting bitcoin as well. Now that they features a bitcoin as a payment more people might get interested in bitcoin as well so it just means more demand will come for bitcoin as they take the opportunity while its still growing. There would be no such thing in our country and I think it can never happen but in a counter part at least we can withdraw our bitcoin (with no extra fee/totally free) to buy some with our country's standard currency.

Good news are coming on this season. We have the same hope that Mcdonalds will accept it soon. Well hoping that branches of Burger King here will do the same implementation of bitcoin adoption.

And again, question, how many people will pay with bitcoins for the food. I'm not sure that they will find many people whoarr ready to pay $1-$2 transaction fee for burger which costs few dollars.

Well thats the problem, but once the confirmations started I think its almost OK that it is approved or on the way. Actually, it's more likely that Tim Horton's and Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen would offer to accept bitcoin for payment next given that they and Burger King are all owned by the same Parent company.

It's cool that a franchise could have proposed this idea. Usually the franchisees have very little authority to make decisions.

but it doesnt sounds good for home delivery it could work, like pay online using phone or pc while placing order and then after confirming the trasanction food gets delivered , but if the trsanction fees are low then you will never know the transaction is going to confirm .

Hate to be the person here that's going to burst the bubble of others here, but I'll guess I'll be helping everyone out here when I do this. Think about it, do you really think that Burger King is going to be doing something like this if they don't have a chance at getting more money and in reality they're probably still going to be getting the same amount of revenue -- with BTC or not. People aren't going to not go to this fast food restrautrant simply because they don't accept Bitcoin. I've said this once and I'll say it again, Businesses and Gov's are only going to adapt when they're bound to make a lot of money from adoption, in this case I think it's only going to be going to one store and this isn't going to be going to National level.

This is the problem. In the past too several business firms started accepting bitcoin through intermediary service providers as well in the direct way. They didn't find it good to make a better profiting as not much of their customers started using bitcoin as the payment currency.

Now old school mafia types may learn about bitcoin and inject all their dirty money into it, new highs in sight !

If this were to be true, this would be great news especially to current bitcoin users. I hope other fast food chains would take the same step. This is doable if they adopted a payment system that would allow bitcoin users to easily transact with minimal or no fee. This may be beneficial to both consumers and producers of the market. This new development would increase the popularity of bitcoin and attract new bitcoin users!

This is even more impressive considering that the acceptance will be rolled out to the Burger King branches nationwide. This will be a challenge for the IT department for the integration of bitcoin on all possible payment options but definitely a step in the right direction for wider adoption. The Finance head of Russia also seems ok with the idea of bitcoin being used more widely as long as regulations and policies are clearly in place.

Burger King has more than 15,000 outlets in 84 countries, fourth largest fast food restaurant chain in the world and approximately 50% are in the US and since 99.9% of franchisees are privately owned, apart from enforcing franchisees to follow quality control guidelines, BK has given exclusive development rights to regional franchises, I guess they are free to make decisions regarding the mode of payment they want to accept.

Hope based on the legality and popularity of bitcoins more regional BK franchisees would start accepting bitcoin in future.

I don't know how it goes in Russia but in France more and more fast foods have these automatic boots to order, and more and more have smartphone apps to order. Personally I order with the app, it allows me to pay with paypal. That might be a way to implement bitcoin.

Imagine this scenario : The government agencies have a big problem in identifying Bitcoin users in their country. < due to Bitcoin's pseudo anonymity > OK, Now some major franchise start to accept bitcoins as payment for their goods or services. The Bitcoin users start to use these services and here is the kicker : Most of these merchants or retailers have very good CCTV systems that can be used to link the identity of the user with the Bitcoin wallet that are used.

Is this good for Bitcoin?  ^hmmmmm^

I have to say I have trouble believing into this. After all, this is Russia, they re still very hostile about BTC. Also, with current transaction fees issues, mempool overloads I do not see this happening.

This news from Russia and the other news from Poland just yesterday - it's just another step further to Bitcoin mass adoption and more people reading and learning the power of the blockchain. This is awesome.

Interesting to see how this works with the current fees and delay or perhaps they are scheduling it for the summer so it happens after the segwit business.  I hope it works out well and Burger King roll it out worldwide.

The point is that you should use a different address each time you settle one or more purchases. Say, if you transfer an x amount of coins from a mixer, exchange, etc, to that throw away address, and after a few purchases you burned through your balance, you simply delete that address. Isn't that difficult, right? No one with a decent functioning brain will use an address in such circumstances all the time.

They are popping like mushroom and for sure we'll see another restaurant coming from South Korea. From the past month there is an airline in Japan that started to adopt bitcoin. And I don't know what's going to be the next establishment or company that will adopt bitcoin.

Acceptance of bitcoin in local food chain market is a big leap. Maybe fees and  conversation will be exaggerating but it will cool down and stabilized later on once many demands and usability from consumers...

It really does seem like that Burger King wants to stay ahead in this more and more cashless society. I applaud the executives(at least in Russia because as you stated, there semes to be no one in america or any other country doing this) of Burger King, they have definitely taken a right step.

I really wish that McDonalds and Dominos, even KFC can follow in Burger King's footsteps. Any merchant that accepts bitcoin is a good thing - let alone transnational corps that have millions of followers worldwide.

Though I wonder how they will address the transaction fee and confirmation issue. By using Bitpay as a payment gateway?

This is a great and big adoptive move from Burger King's side, although this isn't the biggest branch but I guess this shows the popularity of bitcoin in Russia even making it a popular demand and in the same time shows the positive view the government of Russia is having to bitcoin right now.

2 quick questions though:
How many Burger Kings are there in Russia? Here in Germany they are fairly rare, especially compared to in the UK. It looks like the 1st opened in 2010, I guess there aren't many.

How and why will people pay for a $5 burger with a $3 fee?  They would have to be stupid to do it!

Still better than nothing, but these kind of idea don't work anymore, Bitcoin fees are too high for Bitcoin to be used as a currency.

Which will hopefully change with the deployment of segwit. I personally also can't wait to use Bitcoin for smaller payments again.

Bitcoin payment is good and this is all we waiting for to buy things and goods using our bitcoin, but for me I have a little problem with bitcoin payment because of the delay of the transaction and the network fee.

Bitcoin payments can work very much IMO and rather than just scanning a CC then the device will scan a hardware wallet and authorizing a transaction, The bitcoin system can allow a perfect payment interface.
Regarding confirmation, The risk is much lower than bitcoin fraud and the system can automatically ask for higher fees, reducing double spend risk to almost zero.

There is no delay if you don't wait for the first confirmation. For small payments the risk of a double-spend is negligible. For example Bitpay "confirms" instantly, given the paid transaction fee is high enough.

The "pizza" businesses should take advantage of that unforgettable story when someone bought a pizza for 10,000BTC and now that amount is worth around 27 millions. I just say it could be a great marketing advantage for them.  ;D

interestingly enough i keep seeing the food related businesses like the one OP says are starting to accept bitcoin. specially if you check out reddit you can see a lot of news similar to this. from big businesses to small ones such as a sandwich truck.
i remember reading that a small sandwich truck had to stop accepting bitcoin because of all the attention it was getting from people either getting excited to see someone is accepting bitcoin or many who wanted him to explain what bitcoin is.

Really?  Well I do not get excited because perhaps I will still have to fall in line.  My bitcoin is too precious to pay it for fries, burger, and drinks.  But if I run out of money and feel hungry then maybe I would buy some through my bitcoins.  Hopefully that the Burger King here in our country would do the same thing.  And hopefully McDonalds and Shakeys will follow.

But as I know Burger King is American firm, so I think they just decided to star from Russia, because of Bitcoin is still not so known there.

I'm not paying for burger king in Russia or any other country.   Going to be cash every time, and you know why?  FEES.  I don't pay any fees to spend fiat except sales tax,  and I'd have to pay anyway with bitcoin.  The confirmation times are also a deal breaker for me too.  There's no reason to spend bitcoin when fiat works just as well.  Sorry to piss on your parade.

I think this service will be interesting only for miners and traders and I do not think there are so many of them in Russia. But I can be wrong, maybe there is a pretty strong bitcoin community.

I'm wondering what will happen. Is this really gonna work? There's a lot of questions running in my mind right now. I can't imagine what if all of the fastfoods, groceries stores, convenience stores, department stores are accepting bitcoins.

Here are the things that's in my hear right now.

1. About the transaction time we all know that there are 3 types of transaction low (which is the slowest) the normal and the last which is the fastest. What if they're going to pay for low fee since it's the cheapest are they going to wait a lot of time before receiving and approving that the bitcoin arrives? I mean they're going to wait to receive the bitcoins before giving the burger? (just an example)

2. About the transaction fee, we all know that whenever we transfer bitcoins to another account or wallet we need to pay for the transaction fee so it means that if we're going to  buy 4$ worth of food and we're going to pay thru bitcoins (Bitcoin worth 4$ + transaction fee) it will add more instead of just paying 4$

If Burget king is accept bitcoin, there will be a chance for another country to accept bitcoin as well
As I know Russia is ready to legalize bitcoin just like japanese did so I'm sure bitcoin value will bubble soon

There can be a few workarounds

At least, until Lightning Network and payment channels are implemented and start working for real. For example, a certain fastfood chain (like Burger King and their likes) could use a major web wallet like Xapo or Coinbase, so if you want a hassle free service, you can create such a wallet yourself and use it specifically for payment in these eateries. Transactions between the accounts of the same web wallet are instant and free of charge, and it seems to me that it will become a preferred way of payment if all these stores and fastfoods are going to massively accept Bitcoin

One minute silence for all those who will try to buy burgers and fast foods with bitcoins. I will have an open proposal to them, that please sell your bitcoins to me at the market price minus transaction fees. I will happily buy your bitcoin and keep it as an investment to see a better future.

My suggestion is that, don't waste your bitcoins for buying food or anything else. Instead take it as an investment. I hope everyone is aware about the bitcoin pizza day. I am sure, that guy who bought 2 pizzas in 10k bitcoin, is deeply regretting now. His two pizzas in 2010 is worth 25 million USD now. Now the choice is yours. Spend it and regret later or save it and make your future better.

This is huge information since most people in Russia still have a not so great view of bitcoin, maybe this will be the step towards Russia becoming more accepting of cryptocurrencies. I feel that the people spending Bitcoin on things like food and other things that they don’t really need when they have fiat to get what they want will cause them to lose out on the price increase. Bitcoin shouldn’t get spent so easily, I hope that Burger King at least makes an attempt to place their coins somewhere so they won’t dump it in one go.

This is great if they will accept bitcoin this summer but for me, it is not worth it to use our bitcoin to buy burgers or any meal at burger king unless the fees will be lowered down to 20k-50k satoshi again because if we will buy foods from them and paying at least 2 USD fee worth of bitcoin then it is not worth it for me because it is like wasting money but if you are like buying the whole menu them it is good to use bitcoin.

The fees will be lowered once segwit gets adopted and its looking like that will be soon.

We're not sure about it because activating segwit means 100% assurance that it will become a successful project because something can really happen and we all know that. Segwit only added more size to the blocks and it is not sure that the fees will be lowered because of that because i think that segwit will become just like a temporary solution because soon the blocks will need more space because of the demands that are keep in coming.

It's clever management of business, in my opinion. Obviously Burger King sees a future in bitcoin transactions, online and irl. However, i think that they are probably going to be using a transaction processor such as Bitpay. They say that programs are going to be written to accept these transactions, so hopefully they are able to accept bitcoin transactions directly instead of having a middle-man handling it for them, and thus retaining the privacy and anonymity of bitcoin transactions.

It says nowhere though when this will be implemented. I hope it's going to be soon because it's not rare when someone announces a change in business implementing it 1-2 years after it is even announced.

This is very good news for bitcoin. Russia Burger king accept bitcoin. That mean lot of user come and use bitcoin to buy pizza. More people use bitcoin. Bitcoin price will be high in future. 

I want burger king whopper now, hope that soon in our country it announce its acceptance too same with other food establishments, it's cool when popular companies relating now in bitcoin, we really made a good decision on having btc even before.

It is looks like the russia is now moving forward for the cryptocurrencies and they are now accepting bitcoin to their food services, i hope the other branch of Burger King in different countries even here in my country will accept bitcoin also so i can no longer bring wallet or pocket money but just my smartphone with bitcoins in my bitcoin wallet.

Its cool and great news. This may be simple but office people maybe attracted to buy bitcoins as budget for their meals. Office people do not eat heavy breakfast but rather they just buy burger and coffee while going into their office. This time it will be more efficient for them to buy burger with the use of bitcoin. It is a possibility, however, if you are purchasing online with your laptop using bitcoin then there are probably a lot the government can know about you as well through the IP address, type of browser used, system info etc. Even with bitcoin if you don't use TOR and VPN together, as well as anti tracking measures it's hard to get perfect anonymity.

And no, i don't think that paranoia for tracking is a bad thing at all, and i believe that it should be encouraged. Otherwise, governments will gain more ground without any protesters of what they do.

Well this is expected since it is legal to use bitcoin in Russia, and I think we can see more stores in Russia accepting bitcoin as a payment soon. I just hope more countries will follow Russia in legalizing bitcoin.

Bitcoin used as the payment method in Burger King is not expected at all. Bitcoin is not forbidden in Russian but that doesn't mean it is legalised, it is still grey area to for tax Russian tax office.

The Russian Tax Service declared their position toward Bitcoin in an official letter that they published in November, 2016 (if I'm not mistaken). I posted a link to it somewhere around here once it had been published, though I don't remember in which thread exactly. It basically says that Bitcoin is a sort of foreign currency and any foreign currency transactions should be conducted via authorized banks but since no bank is going to get involved with Bitcoin (due to lack of the laws regulating Bitcoin circulation), Bitcoin is none of their business either. So it is no longer a gray area (at least, not in respect to taxes) if we could interpret the letter in this way

I do not think that this will be a successful step. I am sure that this is only a marketing effect to attract media attention.

Annoying them is not a step to allow bitcoin. Introduction is a best step to introduce bitcoin in a local burger king. Not just in a local burger king. Introduce Bitcoin to all those shops which are famous. All those services who are famous then our government will take an action to allow bitcoin. Accepting bitcoin for food services does not seem realistic to me. The reason is obvious. How can you expect your transaction to get confirmed after you ordered something?

Well, I'm not sure about the mechanism honestly but this could be fixed with the Lightning network in the future. As for now, they may not require any number of confirmations but again, that could lead into some serious losses. I don't see anyone trying to scam for such a small amounts though.

They could just use a well-established web wallet like Coinbase or Xapo (or whatever other wallets are there), and thus they may demand their Bitcoin customers to use such wallets too. Obviously, transactions inside these wallets are off-chain, therefore they are instant and require no fees. If you are a regular customer of these eateries, it might make sense to keep some pocket money in one of these wallets even if you are whole-heartedly against using them ("be your own bank" and that kind of thing). Even with the introduction of LN and further improvements, this type of payment may still prevail for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of use

I think it would be good if a couple of those webwallets would become "standard" like VISA and Mastercard are, then shops could have both webwallets, and customers one of them, with 0.05BTC stashed on it for such purchases.

Uh, usually if you pay with a big enough fee it would make sense that they accept it with 0 confirmations because the risk of someone being caught CCTV and being jailed is just too much for a scammer. Plus, there are way more double spendingc opportunities online when they can stay private and for bigger amount than just a big burger...

The main issue isn't confirmation times, but rather transaction fees. It seems like Burger King is going to accept bitcoin probably through Bitpay, which means that you're not only going tohave to pay 0.0007ish bitcoins in miners fees on your end, there is also like 0.0007 btc in deposit fees for bitpay. So you're essentially paying $4 to just pay with bitcoin. It would make sense if you only had bitcoin on you, but wouldn't really make any sense if you had debit card funds.

I haven't yet tried either Xapo or Coinbase. So I am not that aware of the fees charged by these wallets/exchanges. How much do they charge for sending coins from one user to another? If it is something like $0.10, then it should be OK. But anything more than that will be very unattractive.

I hope not only Burger king, in the future all franchises also use Bitcoin as a transaction tool. Hopefully with the development of bitcoin, all dreams can be real  ;)

It's quite a huge step and e are looking forward to Burger King extending it globally so that we can all order in our beloved cryptocurrency. We can even order for someone in a different country should they globalize their Bitcoin acceptance. Secondly I think other companies in Russia are going to take similar steps after this initiative.

I am a fan of burger king. I eat this burger atleast 2-3 times a month. It is actually so near at the office that i am working at. However I am not from russia and It seems that they are not implementing that news here.

Transactions with at least 1 confirmation should be considered and valid, if we are going to wait until its fully confirmed it could take beyond the average eating time of a person lol. You may be part of a good campaign to introduce Bitcoin to the Community in your country. I do it gradually, most people always laugh and think this is a joke. Traditional societies are very difficult to accept new technology and suspect that Bitcoin is very dangerous.

Apparently this is something made just through the Russian Section, mostly due to how many russians are using bitcoins and the popularity in the country, Hopefully the other chains follow and globally, rather than just locally.

You send your money from your account at Coinbase to another account there using an email address, which is your login (so you don't even need to know the Bitcoin address of the recipient). I had (and likely still have) like three wallets at Coinbase, and in the past I often moved funds between these accounts without delays and paying any fees. I haven't transferred coins in this way for a few years already, so maybe it is possible to do by using your alias or something to that tune (I'm not using this web wallet anymore)

Coinbase is a third party payment processor and this means that Burger King will not be directly accepting Bitcoins from the clients (if they decide to accept Coinbase payments). But the issues with delayed confirmations and high fees can be resolved by using Coinbase. Burger King will also benefit from it. I don't know how much they charge the merchants, but I believe that it is somewhere around 0.5%.

This will be again a success story. Russia has got lot of bitcoin users, till date I feel that Russian government hasn't opposed as well haven't shown any interest on bitcoin. As long as they convert the proceeds into fiat (provided they actually receive bitcoins at all and don't use some payment processor like BitPay, which does the conversion for them), this is nowhere close to "brands big and small going into bitcoin and leading the whole new era". I guess we should wait till all these big and small brands start paying wages in Bitcoin directly. Until then, it is not a lot different from first selling your bitcoins for fiat all by yourself and spending cash later. In the latter case you will most likely pay even less in total for a typical hamburger

The more that BTC is used, the better.  Yes, the more merchants who take it directly, the better.  Also, BitPay takes a "cut" of about 1% (at least with providentmetals.com when I have paid for gold w/ BTC).

I don't have any good idea of how this will all end, I hope that BTC's elders get their act together and SOLVE the scaling problem(s).  If they do, that would likely be quite good for BTC.  If not, well, um not so good.

There are many ways the whole Bitcoin experiment could go bad.  But, it could also work our great (for us), assuming that it is not some nefarious plot by .govs to control our money (and hence control us).

I love burger king! but not sure if i would spend my bitcoin on some fastfood chain, i think it is worth saving, not spending, just sayin'

It is good that bitcoins is most popular among all other cryptocurrencies and i think many other establishment will soon legalizes it too. Im so happy that there will be one big company already legalizes it.
