Open BETA access.

Our company Whoami Inc. is incorporated in Panama where no data retention laws exist. We will protect your privacy.

Sign up and download our VPN software: https://whoamivpn.com
Discord: https://discord.gg/bWqA2CF
Twitter: https://twitter.com/WhoamiVPN

We have been working on a VPN project and are in the stage of releasing the beta for testing and would like to extend an invitation to all Bitcointalk members here who would be interested in trying this out and giving us feedback on the product. Please note that this is a beta so you can expect problems and bugs but that's why I'm looking to have folks here help me test this so we can correct any bugs or issues for our final release shortly.

I would like to add that you will have the ability test with absolutely no data limits during the beta so you can use as much as you like however we will have limited servers and several countries. Right now we're just trying to work out any bugs that might be in the coding and that's for you folks come in.

Yes, we are nobody right now, so why should people trust us over some VPN provider paid to be featured in PCMAG, The New York Times or some other news magazine. Our VPN service is going to be free until we can provide a satisfying and bug-free experience for our end users after that we will offer paid plans with access to better servers and more features.

Also, we will be having a free version in our final release. There will be no restrictions on data but it will be only on a limited number of servers which will be announced in the final release.

You can leave your comments here, create a support ticket on the site or join our discord.

Nothing is free, so I must be the product?
Yes, you are the product but being the product is not always a bad thing! The VPN is free because it helps us grow the number of users registered faster, thus we get more exposure as people probably are more likely to recommend us to their friends as we offer a free service in that moment and the users help us with finding bugs, improve the overall usability and suggest new features.

We do NOT
  • record your VPN usage;
  • present any kind of annoying 3rd party ads;
  • sell or distribute your data to 3rd parties.

Thanks.

Look forward to the write up, I am to green to take first step and give a good review on these matters. Hopefully you sway me towards this product or point out some flags I would be unaware of.

I am new to discord as well OP, so I guess that will have to wait till next weekend when I have time to figure out how to navigate it.

New updates will be announced soon.
Please let us know if you have any questions or feed back regarding the VPN free access beta.

I have downloaded and installed your Vpn on my windows 10 pc. I have logged in, and i see only 2 servers available, without any users connected to them, but none of the servers are connecting. When i click on a server, an click connect, nothing happens after that.
How to connect to a server? And what is the button at the top which gets blue when i click it? Does it have anything to do with connecting or it is for some other purpose?

Hi! First of all, I am sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with our VPN software. Please make sure no other software on your PC is blocking for Whoami VPN Client.

When you have selected a server (pick a country and then a server in the sub list), the "CONNECT" button should be visible on the bottom of the application, click it and it should be connecting. If this is not the case you are more than welcome to come by our discord channel and we will try to figure out the cause of this

The button at the top is a switch button (on/off), it's simply used to disconnect from a server. It can also be used for connecting to a server, assuming you have already picked a server in the server list.

Thanks for your kind words. We might get the Switzerland server up and run this or the next week. At current time our priority is making the product more stable and adding the planned functionalities.

If you wanna use OpenVPN own client sure you can do that, please download the OpenVPN config through the user-panel but it only works for Netherlands and USA as these are the only 1 up and running atm. If you have any issues feel free to contact us on discord or any of our other channels.

We will be looking to provide a selection of multiple locations at WhoamiVPN as we progress within our beta.

Where are you guys located? I see Panama on the homepage of your site?

Are you guys legally required to hold logs of your users / customers, and if so, how much / in which case do you report them? Quite interesting to know about that.

You basically register everything we do?

Panama, Panama City. There exist no data retention laws in Panama so we are not legally required to hold certain information about our customers.

We have revised the privacy policy, it will be available soon. I'd like to clarify on our log policy: we log your IP address when you send queries to our website;  browser version; timestamp.

We do NOT log the following things when visiting our website: time spent on each page; statistics in general. There will never be any 3rd party analytics on our website. We will never place any 3rd party and permanent cookies on your PC when browsing our website.

And we do not log your VPN traffic this includes what website you visited, a timestamp for the visit and so on. Thus we do not register everything you do, we keep it to a totally minimum.

Almost all VPN companies keep records, there is no problem keeping records. Are there ads on the VPN?? The ads are sometimes very annoying. I will install the VPN according to whether it is an advertisement or not.

There are no ads nor do we plan to add that. We will never present 3rd party ads for any of our users on the desktop or web app.

Possibly. It depends on your location. We only have servers in Netherlands and USA right now. If you live too far away from these locations your latency might be too high.

Interesting thing. I've connected to web-site over VPN with IpSec encryption. But "site" wrote that my connection is " unprotected" .
Another question i have is - how you can guarantee that "no logs" ? As i remember sometimes ago PureVPN share logs to FBI, even they are also guaranteed anonymity, no logs, etc.

Only really one way around complete control and its to setup your own VPS. Logs are going to be kept as a protection and control for most VPN companies. Its like the KYC rules people have to obey or get hit hard with fines.
Presume the worst case and you will be more so prepared for inevitable issues.

How there is no problem on a VPN keeping records? Why would you use a VPN if you don't care about your privacy (which is what you are saying)? Should Tor start keeping logs aswell?

I wouldn't use this service for nothing in the world. Even a few major VPN providers in the world have been found keeping logs and cooperating with the FBI or governments. Imagine what a random and free "VPN provider" will do with your data... Remember: "If you don't pay for the product, you are the product".

It will only show protected if you are connected to one of our servers. Maybe we should name it something more logical as its purpose might be interpreted differently

In regards to no logs, you can only take our word for that. PureVPN decided to cooperate with the FBI for some odd reasons + they lied to all of their customers. It's a difficult matter to prove that we don't log our clients

And here the problem is you are probably the only one using it, so you are not as anonymous as if 100's of people were using the same server. VPN companies in Panama are not required to fulfill the KYC by Panamanian law.

Hello, there. I am currently looking among several VPN options and came across this one. I was wondering, is it possible to use your VPN without having to download your software, like a regular PPTP connection through the built-in operating system options? I would like to stay as far away as possible from downloading software and it is one of my pet peeves with most VPN services. Also, will it only work on OSX and Windows or will it also work on mobile phones, etc.? Any plans to expand on this? I would rather have a VPN with a small company such as yourself than with big ones who probably care less about their customers.

Hello, we do not offer PPTP atm but I think we can add it in the near future. Right now we are only using OpenVPN so if you don't wanna use our VPN client you can download the OpenVPN config from the user-panel and use OpenVPN itself. This works on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iPhone. If you have any questions or need help drop by our discord (link in thread) and we will gladly answer any questions you may have. You can also email us, please check out the website for contact details.

Thanks for considering us.

I registered at your website and downloaded the configuration file given by your system on your website. I can confirm that it, indeed, works just fine. The speeds are a bit on the slower side, but that is to be expected from a service that is being provided to the user for free.

I only tested the USA location so the experience might be different for different servers depending on which one you choose. Everything seems to be running fine, however, and even though the speeds aren't that great, the latency is actually pretty low compared to other VPNs I have used in the past. I will report back if I find out more.

You might experience a better speed by using UDP as using the TCP protocol for a TCP based application can result in double performance loss.

We will eventually upgrade our servers to provide a faster connection for our users. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm always in favor of new bitcoin VPN services, especially ones that are conscious about the community and make strong efforts to be compatible with them/us. If the UI is what's posted on the homepage, I'm already a fan of the design - especially the transparent number of users per server.

How's the pricing going to be like after the beta phase is over?

Also: it seems like the WhoAmI website is located at [ https://www.whoami.li ] instead of the [ https://whoamivpn.com ] listed in the first post of the thread. The second link is broken. :)

We have not fully decided the pricing yet. Our pricing will, of course, be competitive and justified by the amount of 'advanced' features we will be offering at that moment. We will soon release a new update with more features and better error handling. Thanks for your kind words.

https://whoami.li is a canonical for https://whoamivpn.com I don't have any issues accessing through https://whoamivpn.com is there something I have overlooked?

That's strange. Attempting to connect to the .com on my normal ISP results in a reset connection error, but accessing it via my current VPN provider allows for the request to go through. Same goes for wifi (same ISP) vs. mobile data on my phone.

I didn't really think about trying different modes of access when testing the .com in my last post. It's just me, then.

Never heard of anything similar to this yet. It sounds indeed very strange. Maybe it's a cache problem, try flush DNS cache.

I will be trying out connecting through UDP instead of TCP soon, although I am not the biggest UDP fan. I did use the VPN recently again and I was utterly surprised by how much lower the latency was compared to other VPNs. I know it is not a matter of location, as I am comparing this to similar VPNs near the U.S. Whatever it is that you are doing in order to keep latency to a minimum, it is working wonderfully. I have yet to try out VPNs at other locations, but I don't expect anything different. We'll see how that goes. Is there any ETA on when you plan to go paid?

We still have some minor issues we are trying to improve, these are both server and client related. There will be paid plans in the very near feature, can't give a reasonable ETA yet but we will keep you updated.

What's the incentive for you to provide a free VPN service? I've seen a lot of free VPNs in the past get busted selling customer data. I honestly just can't trust someone that offers a service for free, it's suspicious.

Please note that we are currently in BETA. I have already answered a similar question to yours, this was my response:

"Yes, you are the product but being the product is not always a bad thing! The VPN is free because it helps us grow the number of users registered faster, thus we get more exposure as people probably are more likely to recommend us to their friends as we offer a free service in that moment and the users help us with finding bugs, improve the overall usability and suggest new features."

I'll give it a try.A paid VPN is not exactly safer than a free one anyway. And I understand its market strategy providing free services.
I wish you success in the business.

A paid service might not necessarily be safer or more secure than a free one, but usually when you pay for a service, the tier for which you pay gives you a guarantee for some sort of level or tier of service (for example, a certain amount of bandwidth or speed on a VPN such as this one) and the service provider is more dedicated towards maintaining that tier. Of course, this is going to vary depending on who we are talking about, but given what I know so far about WhoAmI, I feel good about purchasing from them.

Feel free to PM me once a paid version is out!

Beta phase, only a few servers can be choice, I give a little test and have no any problems. Personally, I feel that the UI is pretty cool.

I think that most of all this service will be enjoyed by users from Russia. Therefore, will wait for the addition of servers that are closer to them.

I'm glad that you liked the UI and had no issues using the VPN. If you have any suggestions please let us know so we can improve it.

We can add a server closer to Russia if you or anybody else has suggestions to the location please let us know.

NOTE: We slowly add new functionality to the VPN and fixing known bugs. The MacOS client got new functionalities, a settings page where there is a variety of options for configuration of the VPN - It's not released yet but it will be out soon.

I like your services but I wanted to ask you one question. How do you make money when you aren't charging for your services? You must have servers which need to be maintained  on regular basis. Without charging you can't afford to run those for more months.

The maintenance is not too bad. We make money from our fulltime jobs and the monthly expenses are minimal, so we can easily afford to run this. The service has been up since start August.

Almost all VPN companies keep records, there is no problem keeping records. Are there ads on the VPN?? The ads are sometimes very annoying. I will install the VPN according to whether it is an advertisement or not.

Remember: "If you don't pay for the product, you are the product".

if you want real privacy, you should go buy VPNs that cost over 250$ a year
and there is no garantee with them either
all of the free VPN services and majority of the paid but cheap ones are collecting data and logging your activity
don't act surprised here, its the prose of life, nothing is free in this world and even if you pay for the product, you can be the  product
if you do not do anything that is illegal ot requires additional privacy -you can use it no problem just for streaming or torrenting etc.

In the beginning of next month,  1-5 December new servers will be added. There will be at least added 1 server in each of these locations: Singapore, San Francisco, and Frankfurt.  We will add 1-2 more servers based on what the majority of our users want so please suggest one or multiple locations, thank you!

Are you looking for suggestions to add a server to an existing location or to add a server to a new location? In the former case, in my experience, Switzerland is one of the best locations you could possibly add servers to. I know for a fact that many people, especially those in Europe, use Switzerland along with the Netherlands for their VPN. In the latter case, I would like to suggest adding different locations inside Russia. Different places in Russia can result in much different latencies out of the sheer size of the country.

Yes, I am looking for suggestions to add more servers in new locations. Switzerland and Russia will have the highest priority as these locations seem to be very popular. Singapore will also be added. Unfortunately, we might not get these additional locations added before the end of December as we are getting a little delayed with the desktop client development.

In my opinion, and depending on the demographic that you are targeting, you should be placing more emphasis on the actual service than on the desktop clients. Of course, I do not actually know exactly what your development team is working on, but VPN clients already exist, and given how your VPN is OpenVPN-hosted, you could easily just use the OpenVPN client as the desktop client. You could also add features to your VPN service such as intranet communication before the internet (assuming you don't already support it).

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

The available OpenVPN client lacks many nice-to-have features. we still have a long way to go before all our features are implemented. We will implement different things such as; a way to bypass firewalled internet access and kill switch. I believe we will have to resources to begin on this in January as it's expected to have a full-time employee there. We have made many improvements to the MacOS X client in regards to stability and usability but none of those changes have been released to the public yet.

We decided not to add any more servers this month as there are some things we want finished/improved first.

We have also stumbled across this project, https://mysterium.network/ and it looks very interesting at a first look. I will spend some of the next days to see if this is technology is something we somehow can utilize in our software.

That's interesting - I was just thinking about this a few days ago and wondering how it was turning out. Glad it's still going well. Is there any roadmap or idea on when this will become a paid/freemium service?

We are hoping within June we will become a premium service. We are still developing features for Windows & MacOS.
We will make announcements on social media, discord, and forums once we have transitioned into a premium service.
