A 20-year-old Korean student has been found to have committed suicide after falling into depression due to huge losses in bitcoin and cryptocurrency. The body of the victim was found at his home. The victim has earned 200 million won (about 200,000$) from investments in cryptocurrency.

Sad? Why would it be sad that a moron ended his life because he gambled and lost?

When the stock markets have crashed before many people have taken the same action.

WHat i don't get here is he gained 200k and then killed himself?  what you do mean he thought he lost but then after he died it turns out his coins mooned or what?

I see many more of these to come if they invest in ICO's most will turn out to be scams or failures.

Stick to well known developement teams who have produced something of value that is already functional that way some value is locked in if it has a good use case.

That is sad. He was only 20 years old which is a pretty young age to kill yourself. I've seen some other people post suicidal thoughts in the forum. Some of the mods even removed a couple of them for some reason. I don't understand why people want to sensor such things. Even though things are uncomfortable or unpleasant it is important for people to understand the truth about what is going on. Also, if people are announcing suicidal thoughts it is a call for help. Even though it can be a bit annoying, it is still worth it to keep it and possibly save someone's life.

It is too bad this kind of thing happens. Imagine how many of those suicide victims didn't leave their private keys around for their loved ones to have. There are probably a whole bunch more bitcoins out there floating never to be seen again.

A few days ago I also saw the news, this is a sad news.
The risks of cryptocurrency market are huge, and I don't recommend that anyone take out a loan or put all of their money into an cryptocurrency market, which is too risky.

Suicide is one's own choice. Never ever you should judge someone on this. This is his life and not yours. World is full of sh*t today so I fully understand him. Hopefully he will find better life on the other side.

Accept everything before you move that's the key in trading like think the possibility might happen to your investing we need to handle it,i think he got depressed but that's not good to kill yourself and we live to have fun in life if you angry in the world then that's a big problem because in life this is meaningful like you can imagine what you can achieve in the future so better to think positive and let go the negative.

I don't know why he has done that, game is not yet over for Bitcoin we are still in a thick of a fight, he will not see how it all ended or if he win or not in the future, this is what happens if you are not comfortable in your investment, experts have always advice newbies to only invest what you can afford to lose.

Apparently the effect of cryptocurrency is very influential on real life. But if think about losing that kind of money who is not depressed. The decision taken by the young man is also wrong because he can wait a while until the price recovers. This is sad. Never invest or bet your entire life savings on anything so volatile and uncertain. Losing it all is a disaster which can destroy families, jobs, health and life.

Many of us are ardent believers and followers of this technology but cautious optimism is just as healthy as tempered skepticism.

Asians have a strong saving-face mentality which is what drives them to do extreme things to compensate for any failure. Even making life-ending decisions for things like failing exams or being rejected admission by universities.

This is why I say that one should be very cautious with Bitcoin investments. You should invest 10-20% of the savings only.

That would happen if we only focus our life on money.  If our focus will be on wealth and we based our happines on material things.  It is indeed sad that he became so desperate and ended his life just because he think that bitcoin is much more than life.  Anyways may he rest in peace.

people, Crypto is a complicated and Dangerous place. If you're not even smart enough to understand that "the other side" is nothing but a rotting corpse, then what the hell are you doing here?

Gambling and investment are wonderful because IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LOSE anything you don't want to lose. There is no valid reason whatsoever that justifies someone losing enough to hurt his life. Gambling is a problem. Depression is a problem as well.

For a depression I would suggest a constant care, consulting a doctor for sure. Never neglect that problem.
For gambling, I would suggest - stay away, always. If you can play the game like a sport, without investing and losing sweat only through training then OK, but the moment it starts to overwhelm you - stay out, it is not for you.

Never invest more then you can afford to lose without even looking back at it, and never look tragically at loss of things you didn't have before you started.

When someone depressed that persons needs someone to talk to. This is really sad to hear someone suicide because of bitcoin decreasing a lot. All of us here at first not happy with the current situation in the market but let's be positive that it will recover.

Yeah , he gained 200k from his investments but nobody said how much were those "investments" worth.
But I think that most likely he threw away all his earning on some ICO or ICOs that proved to be a scam and ended up
with nothing.

I've seen cases like that when people who just got rich can't really cope with the fact they've lost it all. Previously they could simply live even with a loss of something like one year worth of wages but once they reached that level where they believe the hardship is over and they will have a easy life they can't cope with the loss and going back to their previous way of living.

This is the problem with current generation. They should not focus on money only. Also, I am sure that he invested most of his savings there that resulted in this.

Perhaps he could not accept that he loses such big amount of money he couldn't imagine losing more than he earned...he blame himself and so disappointed that he decided to end himself, its hard for him to accept the truth  that sometimes it happens.. but hope that he also able to think during those time and that somebody helps him realize that life is more important than money that he can recover what was loss and there's still chances for it when the value gets high, but when life ends it never returned.

It is so normal conclusion if a teenager joins to cryptoworld. Families should take care about their children and should not let their children to trade. Because whether they loose or win they can make ridiculous things such as this or stopping going to school etc.

This are really bad news, because it show the type of craziness that is going on in peoples minds because of all the hype generated by crypto. That's why I kind of understand the strict regulations that are happening in bitcoin. The China ban might have been to extreme, but Russia only allowing that professional investors buy bitcoin might be understandable in some point, and Facebook banning crypto adds is quite normal as well.

Of course that these things should be done by family members and friends, and not really government, but the truth is that most people that come into BTC don't understand it, and they need to be protected from doing crazy things. I like bitcoin and crypto and I think it's a great investment, but every time someone asks for my opinion or asks me to buy crypto for them etc, I always tell them to first look into bitcoin use cases and state of development. Then they can ask me questions if they didn't understood things and I will explain them what I know, and after that I still tell them that they must understand that they can still lose money because although BTC has potencial, we can't be sure it will work.

Only if they understand all these things I help them buying crypto. I can't prevent them from buying it anyway, but right now, all my friends that bought bitcoin still hold their coins regardless of the current price drop, and they simply don't care. These are the type of invetors we want, and I know none of my friends that bought BTC after this will commit suicide because of their investment, or panic sell because of FUD.

sad news but regardless of the reason for loss you would need to have other serious issues to take this action.  

Stable individuals simply do not kill themselves over financial loss especially at such a young age.

Sad news no doubt but not something virtual currency can be held be responsible for. There would be other factors.

During the big stock market crashes droves of people took this way out.

People who run their own business which goes bankrupt also take this kind of sever action.

Was female? in this case could be many other mental issues at that age in a females life to cause such actions. Females of late teens /early 20's notorious for this kind of thing. I have not examined the current scientific or psychological studies to explain this but it is a critial time frame for femals naturally. Males tend to top themselves later in life again that explanation for that is not something I have examined.

Regardless very sad but you can be sure the mass media will be diving on this news like the vulturous scum they are trying to whip up some reaction.

This is sad news but putting due to virtual currency as the sole cause is of course incorrect. It was probably just one of the multiple triggers for this action.

This is so sad and may his soul rest in peace, but suicide is not an option and we are always advice to invest what we can afford to loose or let go because of this kind of situation. And also stay away from too much gambling because that is the only way you can loose all you investment.

I think part of the cause for his depression is that he is only 20.

Your pre-frontal cortex (the bit that regulates emotion and allows you to keep things in perspective) is not fully developed till you are 23. That's why there is so much depression in the 18-23 group, and why you see Romeo and Juliet type suicides - everything is much more intense and desperate before you become an actual adult.

I was told people in my post before, invest in this very high volatile investment ia just for strong people to avoid such of this thing happen . We need to be strong when we are facing loss like this market run. But Its happen and i hope no more.

This is a really heartbroken news. We should learn from this incident.  We can easily avoid this type of accident by creating awareness with the reality of investment. Im not sure which one is correct, but this news in my country is quite popular and it goes something like this "Korean college student was an investor in cryptocurrency who previously got around 200 million won (Korean currency which is equivalent to around 200,000 usd) from trading, was found dead of suicide in his apartment. The cause is suspected to be the recent drop in cryptocurrency's price and together when the Korean government announced to ban cryptocurrency trading through exchange website"

This government thing is pretty big in Korea appearently, people protested and stuff, so my assumption was that the government had everyone's account suspend, so this guy got upset and thought he lost all his money and decided to end it. Just pure guessing though.

That is a very tragic story, some asian attitude have that, there are even suicide mountain that can be found at Japan, I don't know if there is something like that in Korea. Anyway, last December I read an article that there are Korean students that form a Crypto Club in their university to help other students in trading crypto. What he did is his own decision,he killed himself by his depression and i think he can't handle it anymore maybe thats the reason why he committed suicide.Investing in crypto is a big risk,investors were risktakers  knowing its votality is one of the factor that is going to consider if you are an investor of crypto and now that corrections really going dip i think its going to hard for some investors to know this was happening..and i think he is one of it.I just hope that no one will follow of what he did.Investors must have enough courage in this cryptocurrency business because anything would happen,any rules could be implemented and we all must be ready on the coming circumstances in cryptos.

Well we take risk and we earn money. It is like a give and take situation but suicide is not the answer if you lose. You should get up and fight again in the life. You are not fool because you have the courage to suicide but that's just wrong. You just pass your problem to your family of you kill yourself.

This is really what happened when we tend to be greedy and when we accumulate more than we could ever imagine, we still want more and in the process of wanting more, there is a potential that we can lose it all due to some factors that we cannot control. The loses will be so devastating and for the emotionally and mentally weak, suicide will be an easy escape to accept the truth.

But I think he is stupid, we invest in the currency should not take out all of his possessions, a shareholder fails, then we will become nothing at all, we should control the amount of good investment quantity, and then reduce the risk of investment

This is what happens if the person is very emotional when it comes to investments. The student commits suicide maybe not because of his/her loss in cryptocurrency but other reasons too. We can't do anything about it because its his/her life and not ours. Volatility and emotion kills the student. In fact I had already heard of a South American man who had committed suicide a few years ago when the bitcoin suffered the drastic fall that led him to lose 90% of its value. Also, to suicide because a drop in BTC price it's a sign of some mental disorder. Any average investor knows about the volatility.

Story 1:
Year 2015, I started mining with a single gpu and I mined 40+ ETH and sold them at $1.25 per token.

Story 2:
I joined into signature campaign and received 80k of BLUE tokens. Sold them at 7 cents each and got $5600. Next day it went into 50 cents.

I invested all my profits to SGR and bought some SGR and I made good profit out of it.

Why would you kill yourself over money.  Material things and money will not make you happy, its just an empty journey.  In the end its just pointless numbers on a screen and you can't take anything with you when you die.

Sadly he just at 20 years old, he should have had a long way to go in the future, crypto money is easy to loose but easy to earn if we work hard and having a patient and clear mind to overcome the frustrating times when the market drops. What he lost was not a joke and anyone can easily fall to depression. Two, did he lose it becauase of the correction? My friend told me about this suicide incident he read here in this forum, suicide is not the answer on your depression. When a new trader has recklessly invest a huge amount of coins without looking at the situation of the market then this person will probably lose a huge amount of profit so always try to ask reliable person to give you advice when you should invest.

Depression is a mental illness that should not be taken lightly. You can say it is not entirely his fault. A lot of triggers can set off people with depression to commit suicide. Honestly, I think that this is pathetic. Doesn't even have anything to do with cryptocurrencies.

All I see is a bunch of greedy people that are trying to make money off the crypto bubble and failed to do so because they entered the market at a very unfavorable point. They took the risk themselves so they should take responsibility for it.

very sad news as this news of a life passing is not good to hear. Yes the gains that we can get from investing as well as trading can earn us with so much. Sorry for the guy, but he is not the first one and differently not the last one who done something that he was not prepared to. When you invest in such things and you have no knowledge about the risk management you have to consider the investment lost, if you really lose it it won't hurt that much because you was prepared for it, but if you get some profit out of it, this is good. Take out what you have invested so you will be on 0 and then risk as much as you want.

Well, I tried to be lose in many investments but i didnt tried to make suicidal things that can hurt and kill myself. Because No money can buy a Life. Isnt it? And If he already know that the market is going down, He must hold it until the market is going to be recovered. Well, it is really hard to know what is the reason behind the Korean student who committed suicide. Losing a huge amount of money after investing in bitcoin has a point, but he's 20 years who have a right mind and can see that the future of crypto currency is not yet dying. It's been only 2 months and we have a lot of time to monitor and observe the movement of the crypto coins in the future. I cannot imagine any reasons behind it, but for those people who suffered from depression, it is better to tell your story to someone who you think you trust.

Well some of these stories are cooked because the OP never gave us any credible source and  its hard for me to come to terms with the fact that he took his own life  for a quarter of a million dollar and not more. Maybe someone murdered him and the police should investigate  further if this is even true because this guy could have easily made this 200k$ back if he reinvested with a loan or something because bitcoin is yet to sky-rocket this year.

Suicide is not the answer if you are going to lose profit. The reason why this person cannot take the risk is that, he is not well knowledgeable about how the market works and because of that, this person lose its profit and investment immediately.

It is sad how bitcoin tend to manipulate lives rather than people to manipulate bitcoin making every individuals dependent about it. I guess it is always a choise of wanting to lose a life but not to let your heart filled with worries could also be a choice. There is also a hope. There are very few college students in their twenties, and they have a long time to earn in their twenties!

That's is what we call stupidity of the highest rank,  or maybe the person was having mental issues from the effect of smoking too much weed,  how can one commit suicide  for a currency that haven't even collapse yet,  pleasewe need to start informing the people we bring into the crypto sphere not just about the benefit of crypto but even about the risk.

That's a breakable news to everyone, but this is not a way to move on. Investment not only defines that you can gain a profit of it but sometimes you can be lose or win. So you have to accept it what possible to be happen. Dont do this at all because this can't help to your family however it can be a problem and grieving for this happening.

Investing on bitcoin was too risky. If we only focus our life on money we don't achieve the real happiness.  It is really sad that he/she became so desperate and ended his life just because he think that bitcoin is much more than life.

lot of filipinos will suicide due to scam in investing bitcoin pyramid scheme. almost 900million pesos scammed by the newg investment, they said that when they invest to them they will give 30% profit in 16days and in the beggining it is legit but when it is already in the peak they scam all investors, but now they are already caught and they are in the jail now.

maybe killing himself by bankruptcy is not the main reason, maybe he is involved in recruiting investors to invest in his coins, and ended being scammed too, then all his recruits are angry with him, imagine the pressure and stress it could bring. 

This is really unfortunate for the korean student, committed suicide and found out that he earned 200K it is tragic. People who are investing in crypto should know the risk of investing their money because mostly of crypto projects are failure and even if you lost your money especially if the market falls suicide is not an option. Condolence tho.

Yes but to me it is the immaturity as bitcoin has very high price it use to increase and something get very high once again, but we will have to have patience don’t sell your bitcoin at the panic, before investing in bitcoin try to make your mind that it will change after few months but will have to stay in my senses not to spend bitcoin and not to take stress or tensions about it, so price change of bitcoin is really common don’t worry the market will be high once again.

That's a sad news and a bad example to deal with stress. It is shouted each and every time from almost anyone with a sound mind that one should never invest more than what he can afford to lose. In the case of cryptocurrency market, it is even more important to follow this rule. In my initial days of trading, I have lost my 100% capital within few minutes multiple times but since I had some backup plans, I never invested more than my loss-bearing capacity. May his soul rest in peace and other investors learn from his story.

I think it can all happen to big investors who invest a lot of money. He may have suffered so much loss that he is depressed. I don't invest but I have some bitcoin that I hold, when I see bitcoin prices down I'm very nervous. That is true and also true to people are just emotionally weak and easily surrender to challenges in life. Life is not all about one or any of our businesses, there are much what life can offer than just going to the room, locked your self, and get depress.

I don't think that suicide is the best option to that problem, and any problem cannot b solve by suicide, its a big mistake to have so please don't think of doing it. There are many things you can do to your life, and the world is very big for you to end your life, you don't even explore and knew your purpose in life first and you end it drastically, thats insane. Money is not a problem because you can always find a way to earn money but in life you don't have any ways to find a new life.

There are a lot of things why people commit suicide, so I don't see any reason to specifically associate this with virtual currencies.

That's not a good thing to do and it's very bad at all. Bitcoin wasn't invented for things like that. It must not reached that point because that's very wrong. There's no reason to do that just because of that reason. Bitcoin is a source of life not death. It should help us not to make us stupid do dumb things that.

I am not sad if the ambition to earn money is causing people to die. It is also quite a high figure of 200k dollars for a 20 year old teenager. After all, you have to gamble to lose this money. I am absolutely sad because a gambler committed suicide.
