I know mostly people here know what they need to do before investing in any ico but there are still many people ask the same question in different thread specially newbie. They get the answer but in several post which maybe make them a little confusing.

I am not an expert but i could put what i know here. All i know is from reading here in the forum.

Well just start, everything you need to research and make sure before investing in ico project wheater the ico has :

* working product
* Unique or good idea/solution for existing problem or future problem.
* Strong team behind the project
* Strong planning and marketing ability
* Partnerships with reputed company
* good whitepaper and roadmap too
* experience advisor

* make sure the idea is different with the exist ico or the old project
* check the supply of the token because it cause the price run

From all mention above, i have 1 thing that is most important in my opinion. That is  ico should have working product because working product can lead the ico would be success ( not 100% success but mostly success ).

Before investing, I always look at the team and try to find some kind of information about what all these developers have already done and if their profile on linkedIn was created a couple of days ago. And because I'm already going to their site and see what the attendance of their site is for the day. If the attendance is really big and everything is done as it should, then I go to read the white paper and estimate the project

Thats enough to do before investing in crowdsale.
All research is not 100% guarantee will make us profit at the end but its better than blind invest to them.

Good tip. I was planning to join an ICO this month but I have yet to check their whitepaper first. Will check the profiles of the team also if they are really worth investing as someone told me that 90% of ICOs are for the benefit of the company only. We really need to be careful investing our hard earned money.

How will it be giving earnings? when and where. how to transfer and get the money in hand. It's future aims and success possibilities.

It will not giving you money or earning from what you invest in the project.
You will get the profit from the price growing after hitting the market. So thats why choosing the right ico is very important.

I check their working product too. Wheater alpha or beta version or better to join ico if they are exist company for longer.
Sometime i check in icorating but most of my investment is regarding my friend opinion. My friend have more experience to check wheater the ico worth or not.

Well, for me you have to check first the functionality of the ICO and what would be its contribution in the cryptocurrency world. And also the team that build this and the advisers that helps the team to have a strong foundation and ideas. That is what I saw on this new ICO which is called Daneel. They've got the best team with the best advisers that is why they created this ICO with a great idealistic and functionality for the crypto world.

What I check forst is the quality of the team, the idea and the amount the project is value when all the tokens are dilluted, and the hard cap they are looking for, there are good projects with good team but the hardcap is too high for me

Have you checked how they learned how to make crypto?If they don't know how to answer that then they are outsourcing and the project is going to be bad.

One thing I would add that is important is any competitors. A project may look great and tick all the boxes for white paper, roadmap, team etc... but if they are trying to solve the same problem as an already established competitor, then this must be taken into account.

I think one of the most important moments is to always look at their public purse, if the project is transparent and everything is clear, then this is a good project. Recently, there are very few similar projects on the market, more and more some projects that hide their wallets.

I would think it all should start with the realization that every ICO is basically one big gamble. Even ICO's with great teams, workings products and all those important things can still fail. Also, not everyone is interested in a long term relation with the product. Most are just in it for the short winnings. Even crap ICO's with massive hype are still able to give massive ROI.

Not to say that every ICO will be worth the investment, but some that one would certainly rule out when using factors mentioned before can still be a huge gold mine when you are in it for the $$$ (and I think most are).

 I agree that people should know that ico is a one big gamble. One should be very careful in investing in ICO because there are a lot of scammers around the place. We are talking about money here, investing your money and hoping it'll gain is a very big risk for us to take. We definitely have to focus on the team for sure. Two ico’s I’m planning to participate in are Dock and TomoCoin. Although there is a lot of hype around both projects, the expertise and experience of both teams is what stood out the most. If you are a serious investors and mature enough to see the long term goal, you can’t go wrong with either Dock or TomoCoin, because the team is what matters most when deciding on an ico to invest in.

It's vital to check everything you can about the project ifself , from team , product , market , CEO , whitepaper , roadmap etc. Every info can be crucial for an investor if they don't fully understand in what are they investing. I think The most important thing in ico is to check team and location address.

completely agree with all the listed items and I think that first of all we should look at the team then who it was they were engaged before that are they good developers because in the end we trust our money to them

We dont need to be disappear because nothing is free of risk in the world.
We can not delete the risk for the whole thing but at least we have the option, thats reducing the risk.

How much hard cap is suitable for the ico to develope their project?
It migh be good to know if the project want too high hard cap and it might be turn into scam ico. Too much hardcap is like funding for founder and developer but not for project.
However, good thread for me amd other to know what we should do.

As for me the focus should be made on the extent of all informative details disclosure in the whitepaper. There should be minimum of common data and more fundamental/technical information.
Secondly, the important role plays reliability of escrow, who will be keeping all assets during the roadmap plans implementation.

this is a difficult question actually. There is a lot of alterative in the crypto money market. it is necessary to pay attention to the internet pages and ico consultants when choosing the most appropriate one among them.

Maybe i can add one more thing, their community should be big to support this project and we can know it from their official social media like Facebook and telegram official group. I have seen many project that has many member until  athousand in their telegram finally successfully reached hardcap.

I would also add, look for what big investors look for. They usually look for familiar names of big players, o past experience of the team. They call this Ace team. Not only, look if the thing has an use, and is not just plain water. But of course, you can place the ico high on speculation ladder.

Well before investing in any ico project you need to check the project goal, roadmap and people behind in this project. Dont invest to any promissing project because in the end it will turn to scam its better to choose a project that has a real intention or have a real product.

Before investing in the ICO I look at the idea and the availability of the team's experience in this area. If the team is strong, but the idea has no prospects, then I will not invest.

Need to add ICOdrop (https://icodrops.com/) for rating purpose. ICOdrop just adds the most significant projects. Also, the investor needs to check the hype of the project in the market. Many times good project does not get even soft cap due to the low hype. In my opinion, you should add Hype Factor also in your list.  :)

It is a good sharing for the member here, almost all criteria has been elaborated. I just want to add perhaps this one can be added, just my opinion that not only reputed company but also influence of big name who support the project. Let's say that some ICO are said to be supported by McAfee, it will increase the trust of investors.

The first thing I check is the white paper, and the campaign  manager who are managing the related bounty if they have, review his file and his review, it's a plus point....

I know it can be used for reference but its not all about the bounty campaign. Bounty campaign can be newbie because its from the project itself.

I was missing the working product, I am doing all of the things that you have said but I was missing the working product. I think its a the huge indicator for ICO for being success. Many ICO planned to have a kind of product but in the end they never produce the product. I hope I have merit to send you, but I don't have one.

To find good project . So check that also. Every good project have reputable developers. You should check team.  They must a roadmap, Whitepaper, product finished, use case for product, cap and token sale details and some scam ICOs are not presenting any roadmap. because ICOs i very risky. so better have a deeper research about project to avoid losses.  There are many ICOs going on through this month but to me one of the best and potential ICO is DEBITUM.

We should really read the white paper before we invest in coins we wished to invest. It is really helpful for you to read the white paper when you are investing. Then you could also search for the market of the coins as well. Knowing the ones who organize the coin/project would be also helpful in investing. Each coins have a site wherin you can see the one who makes up the organization as well as investors also.

Hey dude thanks for the topic that helps beginners to find out how to check an ico. It was never easy to figure that an ico would be scam or not, we need to spent few hours reading and research all their background, you need that to avoid investing in scam ico.

Great, I think its already suggested on this thread my opinion about this subject. Well, on my opinion is to assure everything that its not a scam before we plan in investing an ICO. On my part, is to trying to communicate the admin which will gain trust to each parties and to find out what is really the advocacy platforms and the up coming updates of the project. Are there any recommended websites that do reviews of upcoming ICOs? I just don't have the time to dig in deep and read all the whitepapers and available info, so it would be great if there would be a source of information that does the "dirty" work beforehand.

I know its not 100% pure but at least the website will help you to find a good one.
However, if you are lazy then you will close to lose money.

IM checking only 2 things: first is team , is there any russians or not, and some known persons . Second is traffic of their project if they know how to gain visitors and hype around their coin then im buying  for short time.

Make sure that after investing on an ICO first you should make a personal investigation, gather some idea and ask the developer if what is the purpose of their project. I'm not sure if you consider having a Russian dev a good thing or not, but in case you consider that a negative, some of the best projects in the market (like ETH and waves) are Russian.  :D

Yes maybe that the reason why he want russian people lead the project.
Because they already prove that russian has more ability to build the project.
But remember, although russian is good dev but not all of them are good and honest. So looking their track earlier is a must.

I would stay away with ICO that has no products.  So many of them failed in 2017.  Look at Patientory.

For me i will check first there presentation on hoq they present there ICO. The second is the whitepaper that document i will know how they do and how they solve the problem. The third is roadmap what is there mission and vision. Why did they do this ico. And the last is the popularity ill make sure that this ico got more crowd people

I would add a warning: in an ICO, 90% is the marketing part, and now promoter know exactly what things people will check, so they put all our attention that anything "looks good", instead to make things "really good".
So, don't stop at the surface but - if you're ready to invest in it - go deeper.

With part of all the ICO craziness being scam, the majority just having concepts but no working product, a lot of good ideas but questionable business viability, I'm pretty lost with what to look at. Anybody can come up with an idea and a whitepaper, even contact to devs and looking at their history is something that doesn't reveal if this will be something for real or just quick cash for the team behind it. I'm following a handful of projects right now, but I'm very skeptical.

Hello!Good post!I have more variants to check out if ico is good..First whitepaper,advisers,idea,i take look,compare the names and surnames  with real,check in facebook or other social platforms and second is compare withepaper info about tge base office location in google maps if all is correct then i claim the ico.

I would read the whitepaper and business plan to test the integrity of their strategy and execution team.  Look for projects with existing traction in the market with their offering.

Another thing that need to be added to your factors that need to be considered before one should invest his/her money in an ICO is to take a look the profile of the campaign Manager that promote the project. Recently, a well respected Manager Sir aTriz exposed a project that he was managing their bounty campaign because he is man who don't believe in such lifestyle to make money. And he advice the public not to invest their money in that project.

Basicaly the first thing to do of my opinion is to check their team members. check their history who are they where they worked before their  in and everything, then you check the whitepaper and i believe if the teammembers are good you will be convinced just from it.

I would usually read the whitepaper to see if the project is interesting / has a long-term viability to it / how much time they have spent and how much momentum the project has going into the ICO. On top of that do some background checks on the team - recently there have been cases of projects with fake profiles / credentials.

Yes. Before you invest you need check or research about that ICO. Check the market and what project their planning. Read also the whitepaper  and find what is the interesting of that project. And also if the project is the productive and we can earn money. We need to check  before we invest so that our capital will not be wasted and also we can earn a bigger profit.

The existing product note is important because we can see a lot of projects which did raise a lot of funds but after that their token price is dropping like boobs with age.

1) Idea explanation. It is very important that the project can explain their idea in simple way. If they cannot do it ,they are over complicating things which is one of the reasons why startups fail or they just dont care about the idea and project. KEEP IT Stupid simple.

2) Look for their attitude towards details and graphic design in their project webpage, telegram , bounty and ann thread. it does show that they care about their project.

3) Country. I dont want to induce nationalist discussion. But country / region matters. Economy and regulations differ in regions.

4) In some cases projects already have raised some momey in different way which could be a good indicator . For example IcoPass has managed to attract money from " Horizon 2020" which is not a easy thing to do. In most cases this one will be similar to " existing product" criteria .

The real problem is than the succesd of an ICO depends at least 90% from marketing, so any effort is made just to make a proposal that "looks good" and very little attention is given to the creation of a solid product.
So, check anything as you said, but try to verify if what it's claimed is true or they are just empty big words.

Personally i think team and product is most important, so i check every advisor and team member with right click and search google picture, checking their social profiles and checking github for product.

You should do your own research about the ICO before investing. Should follow ICO Facebook and Twitter pages consistantly. Also should read the ICO whitepaper. Don't forget to get ideas from crypto experts.

It doesn't really matter much what you check before investing in ICO. Every ICO remains a risk, either it pays off or it does not. You can check whatever you want, it still does not give you a gaurantee to how it will go. You can keep checking their updates on facebook, site, tweets and whatnot. You think people always tell the truth? They don't. They tell or show you whatever benefits them best. Only after it hits an exchange that you can really trade them you will find out if it has paid off or hold them if you think they will become more worth. All of the rest ends up mostly a waste of your time.

If you have already invested in ICO, but are not completely sure of it, then it's worth periodically looking into the wallet of the company and watching for it to be not a scam so coins actually come to the wallet.

What I usually check first
 in ICO is the Team, a good team and managements usually lead to a successful project, but the most important part is that ICO should have working product... Like the poster have said that working product can lead the ico to be Successful, however, others should be put into consideration also.

Well choosing the right Ico is important because if you want to get profit from that ico it should d be successful. So there are some important points to check like; strong team, promising project, whitepapers, social media accounts and I also look if they active on telegram and how they communicate with the investors. If all of them are ok for me I would go with them.

It's vital to check everything you can about the project ifself , from team , product , market , CEO , whitepaper , roadmap etc. Every info can be crucial for an investor if they don't fully understand in what are they investing.

Before investing in any ICO, I look for many points. I have listed the points which should be checked below:
1) A working product or prototype must be there.
2) Project should have strong team. The team should have previous experience.
3) Website should have all the details.
4) Whitepaper must explain everything.
5) Roadmap should be clear. Also future usage of ICO tokens must be analysed.
6) ICO should have good rating on different ICO rating websites. I check icodrops and icobench for ratings.

After checking all these points, I invest a small amount in ICO. I don't like losing money that's why I always invest very carefully and after proper research.

Long time lurker but first comment...

There are many things to take into consideration when evaluating an ico/company. 

Team: is very important.  Look for previous accomplishments.  A small team with no success/past accomplishments are a red flag to me.
Prototype:  Have a working version whether that be a alpha, internal testnet etc
Partnerships and Investors:  Looks for upcoming or existing partnerships.  If there are big name investors involved, chances are theres some interest
Social activity:  Github, telegram, twitter, reddit etc.  Is the team active in the community?  Is there hype? 
Token metrics are important as well. 

There is many factors at play.  Some more important than others.  But do your research.  Do your DD.  Scroll through their white paper, look through their linkedin profiles.  Investigate their supposed partnerships etc.  I look into ICO's and am a blockchain enthusiast.  I am fascinated with this technology, however given the beginning stages that is crypto, we still have to wade through bullshit to find legitimate projects as there are many scams at this point in time.

In simple words everything. It should be checked in and out about that ICO. Once one is sure of the stuff only then one should invest in it. Check the development team the investor and finally, its community.

There are a lot to check before investing, learn about their project in white paper and road map. Do many research about their team, how experience they are. Do they have any working product? and how about the token sales.

Me too, but what I give premium more than the team is the product. I have read so many articles to not invest on ICOs which don't have any products to show for. I think that's critical because people tend to gravitate and invest on those projects which have good products, newer concepts, or at least, something that is evidently a step or two greater than similar products or concepts. If you can also check the history of the developers, old projects or any affiliates that could give you an idea if their goals are legit could be really helpful.

I only invest on ICOs when they become new altcoins that when they already bumped on coinmarketcap.com and has the average daily trading around $100,000 on coin exchange.
it is because most of the ICOs crypto project has no working products or main net that is why most of them having hard time to attract more investors on their ICO sales.

The most important thing is to study the team. If these are real people with real experience, then this is a good project. All other indicators can be faked or bought for money.

It has been explained by the OP in main page of thread, but i don't know if it is your method or experience before investing into the ICOs projects, personallity i choose the ICOs projects based on the new innovations in the blockchain of technology, the experience of Dev team, the products will can be used by all of the communities and the reviews of another users about the ICOs, usually it can be found on the official thread or social media.

Before I invest in ICO, I usually check:
what product the team has and what benefit it will bring to people
the project team itself
White list
how strong the community is in the team.

Besides reading the Whitepaper, I check the team. Yes, it takes me a lot of time, but I am trying to find all possible information about each person, who takes part in the project. If I find nothing or if the information is negative, I do not invest in it.

it's hard to say. just think that before you invest, thoroughly do your research because it's really hard to point out which one is legit, and which one is scam. plus, investing is actually risky so it's between safe and unsafe.

yes your right its hard to found a good ICO but its better to check it before you invest on it and also don't easy attract if there are have a proposal that you can get a huge profit and have doubt if they are encourage you to participate them. it up to you if you willing to trust them but make sure you know everything about them so you will not got scam.

I believe that you cannot say if the ICO is the best,but if it has a support and big community to support the project for sure it will be successful.Legalities is given but it still depends on the back up at the same time on the will of the developers if they really want to pursue their project. I will always at least analyze the product, concept, token supply, transaction on the wallet, team that builds up, and many others. Just to complete the information.

I always check the website and any existing white papers to ensure whether the ICO has a clear goal or not. of it will certainly be able to take the conclusion whether it would be useful for the future or not. But even so, of course, it's also not entirely can be used as a benchmark. a lot of other things to be seen and analyzed as well.
