As a developer, I think this project is really fascinating and could positively impact the community. This project is sure to catch attention. Is there a working version of this product yet?

I see that the presale hasn't started yet. Is there a way to earn Deco tokens right now?

We have a version deployed on the Ropsten testnet right now, and are hoping to move it to the mainnet soon.  We are in the middle of the audit process right now.  Check it out here: https://app.deco.network/

I see that the presale hasn't started yet. Is there a way to earn Deco tokens right now?

any airdrop news?????????

Sign up for the alpha test here: https://app.deco.network/ and we will be airdropping tokens to early testers when the token is released.  We are firm believers that the early users and testers of our system should be rewarded.

Your feedback is valued, and we want to build something that people want to use and will like, so please tell us your thoughts if you give it a try.  Good feedback and positive contributions to the project will also be rewarded.

I'm interested to see software licenses on the blockchain and that there is a project that will reward developers for contributing. This is a really original project and I doubt I'm the only one who thinks that. How is the presale going?

I'm glad that you guys will be rewarding alpha testers. I'm glad you mentioned that. I am also impressed that you have a product that is ready to test. Incentivizing feedback will also improve the product considerably. You guys are thinking ahead and I think that's valuable.

I heard about dual-licensing, but I couldn't find anything in the whitepaper. Can you explain how the dual-licensing works from a legal perspective?

I think the best feature of this project is opensource. Anyone can offer some useful changes, it is always good.

Yeah, I am not only curious how it works from a legal perspective, but also what is it the dual-licensing itself?

Yeah, I am not only curious how it works from a legal perspective, but also what is it the dual-licensing itself?

Edit: We have a great blog post about this on our blog, but I also answered below.  Check out the blog for more info: https://hackernoon.com/how-to-get-paid-for-open-source-6e13bb238a7f

Great questions!

Dual Licensing is where a project is developed under one main license, but also sells the ability to license the code using an alternative license.

This usually plays out where an open source project is developed using the GNU General Public License (aka the GPL).  The GPL is a "copyleft" or "viral" license, which means that all other projects that utilize or depend on that open source project must also be released under the GPL.  The GPL also stipulates that the source code for all components of a project must be available.  This is really cool for project creators, because they can put their work out into the world for anyone to use for free with the condition that if anyone builds upon it, they must also contribute those changes back to the community by releasing the source of their software.  For example, the most famous open source project, Linux, is licensed under the GPL, and this has facilitated collaboration that has culminated in Linux powering most servers and mobile phones on earth.

This means that, for example, Microsoft can't use any code released under the GPL in Windows because they would have to release Windows under the GPL and make all the source code for Windows available, which they don't want to do.  For this reason, many companies forbid the use of GPL licensed components in their own software, because they wish to keep their source closed.

This is where dual licensing comes in.  Even though your code is primarily released under the GPL, you can sell a proprietary license that does not have the copyleft / viral restrictions of the GPL and does not require the buyer to release their own code under the GPL, so the buyer can keep their source closed.  This is also called "selling an exception to the GPL" and you can read some of Richard Stallman's (creator of the GPL) writing on this topic here: https://www.fsf.org/blogs/rms/selling-exceptions

Our system lets you sell that proprietary license on the blockchain for ETH.  So now, anyone can get paid for their code just by listing their project for sale in our smart contract.  The license sale is logged immutably to the ethereum blockchain so you can always prove that you bought a legit license.

Thanks!

P.S. I am Chris Cassano, co-founder of Deco.Network and I'll be here from time to time, but cryptoreadyplay is also helping Deco.Network with community relations, and is an official representative for us here.

Thanks! :D Nice to meet you as well. Good luck on the project. I'm sure I will have more questions soon as I am doing a lot of reading on the project to familiarize myself. So far, I really think the project goals are great and I can't wait to see more collaboration among developers and more compensation as well.

I'd like to clarify that I understand the basic system of Deco network. Say I'm a developer and I write some code and push it to Git or whatever using this network. Then, for example, someone decides they'd really like to use my code for some project. So they pay me in tokens to use it in their app or for their business? That sounds nice. Is that generally how it will work?

I've been looking for a new, promising project and this one looks really nice. Deco.Network looks useful and developers would have every reason to adopt it because everyone likes being compensated for their work. I am wondering about how users will find modules they are looking for. Is there an easy and efficient way to search modules? For example if I wanted to search for "php shopping cart"?

Yes, that is exactly how it would work! In the Deconet Module Repository, you will be able to search available projects by keyword, review the source code and even try it out before you purchase the license to use it.

In a sense, yes. They can pay you in Ethereum. Deconet tokens (DCO) would additionally be awarded for transactions using Deconet. In turn, DCO Token holders ensure the quality of the registry. When creators publish their code project on the registry, they stake a minimum amount of tokens. DCO token holders may choose to raise a challenge to the application... if it passes with no objections, then the module is added to the registry.

This article includes a video that shows a step-by-step process for how the code marketplace works if that helps! https://hackernoon.com/how-to-get-paid-for-open-source-6e13bb238a7f (https://hackernoon.com/how-to-get-paid-for-open-source-6e13bb238a7f)

Since you are a developer, I would recommend you list a module to the testnet so you can be eligible for the airdrop! https://app.deco.network/ (https://app.deco.network/)

How your open source code is working?

Are you a developer? If you want, you can jump right into the alpha product to experiment with some of the great open source projects listed on the platform, or submit your own to try it out: http://app.deco.network. You can also hear a bit more about the project from one of the founders, David Sneider here: http://www.cryptico.news/2018/03/22/deconet-building-marketplace-open-source-code/

So the way I understand it is someone wants some piece of open source code done. They put a bounty on it basically, someone else does the code and gets paid for it from the person that wanted it done. Is that correct?

Are there ways to submit requests for certain types of code? For example, if I'm not much of a coder and I need someone to develop something.

That is really cool. Thanks for the clarification. I'm going to get started on the testnet and see how it goes. Thanks!

As a developer I am curious about how to get involved with this project. I'd like to start uploading my own projects to deconet but I'm not sure how to get started.

Fantastic! You can actually jump right into the alpha product to experiment with some of the great open source projects listed on the platform, or, like you mentioned, submit your own: Just go to http://app.deco.network (http://app.deco.network) and follow the instructions there. This Demo Video (https://vimeo.com/255095976) will help walk you through the process as well!

Awesome. I definitely will be doing that today. I'm interested in exploring what open source projects are on the platform. How many users are on Deconet right now?

More info to come soon! You can register for testnet and airdrops now at https://app.deco.network/users/sign_up (https://app.deco.network/users/sign_up). To learn a bit more about the team, check out Who's the team building Deconet? (https://medium.com/deconet/deconet-team-487e0d1c3906).

Thanks for the reply and the link to the article. I actually remember hearing about the CTO's hardware wallet years ago. He was a pioneer. That's a cool story on how you guys met too. I think this team looks pretty awesome and I'm excited for the future of Deconet. Which team member is answering questions here?

Thanks - that's great to hear. Will relay your kind words to Chris, I bet he will really appreciate that. I'm Leah, nice to meet you!

Thanks! :D Nice to meet you as well. Good luck on the project. I'm sure I will have more questions soon as I am doing a lot of reading on the project to familiarize myself. So far, I really think the project goals are great and I can't wait to see more collaboration among developers and more compensation as well.
Just wanted to update you on the new bounty program that was just launched this week. Great question! Smart contracts are a great tool that, for example, can equitably reward all the software projects its initial project depends on, so when X conditions are met, X outcomes occur automatically without a need to pay intermediaries. They are more efficient, inexpensive and more secure than traditional systems. Blockgeeks gives a great breakdown. (https://blockgeeks.com/guides/smart-contracts/) Two interrelated smart contracts govern the Deco.Network ecosystem, and they
will run on the Ethereum blockchain. These are the Curation and Commerce contracts which govern the modules that are listed on the marketplace and the framework for accessing them, respectively. The Curation contract, which is based on token curated registries, enables DCO holders to curate the modules that are listed on the network. The incentive structure established in the Curation contract will motivate token holders to maintain the highest quality and most appropriate supply side. The Curation contract also governs select parameters in both contracts. The Commerce contract is what enables the application developers, aka the consumers, to transact in Ethereum or any approved token, including USD pegged stable coins. Upon receipt of payment, the purchase of a license or exception is written to the blockchain. Check out this article, https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3 (https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3) for a great overview for the Deconet project, and https://medium.com/deconet/deco-network-alpha-smart-contracts-e6ac31f7ef35 (https://medium.com/deconet/deco-network-alpha-smart-contracts-e6ac31f7ef35) for a deeper dive into how the smart contracts will work on Deconet.

Great question! Yes, you get rewarded by paying in DCO.

An additional incentive to keep in mind if you have any projects ready to put on the testnet: (from our whitepaper (https://deco.network/whitepaper.pdf))
Developers and other community advocates who join the testnet (https://app.deco.network) and are active will be put on a special whitelist that enables them to receive a discount at the time of the Token Generation Event (TGE). Our hope is that the entire token allocation for the TGE is taken by developers who are active on our testnet.

Check into the whitepaper for more details https://deco.network/whitepaper.pdf (https://deco.network/whitepaper.pdf)

That sounds perfect. Also, thanks for your help and being so responsive. I really appreciate that in a team.  :D

Do you get discounts for using DCO instead of ETH?
Great question! Yes, you get rewarded by paying in DCO.

An additional incentive to keep in mind if you have any projects ready to put on the testnet: (from our whitepaper (https://deco.network/whitepaper.pdf))
Developers and other community advocates who join the testnet (https://app.deco.network) and are active will be put on a special whitelist that enables them to receive a discount at the time of the Token Generation Event (TGE). Our hope is that the entire token allocation for the TGE is taken by developers who are active on our testnet.

It is good to see you guys are rewarding use of DCO. I think that's very important. Also, I will keep that in mind about the discount at TGE. That's an excellent idea as well. When is the TGE?

I have heard great things about the bounty program for this project but I haven't done many bounties before. Where do I go to get started and what is required?

No worries, this one is super easy to join. Just head over to: http://bounty.deco.network (http://bounty.deco.network). Once you're there, you'll plug in your social media platform usernames, and check out the steps for linking to specific blog posts. Details are listed on the bounty site. And then give us your feedback on our Telegram channel! http://t.me/deco_network (http://t.me/deco_network)

Perfect. I got registered easily with no issues. Thanks for the help.

I really like the idea behind this project. Does Deconet have any big partnerships? If so, who is your biggest so far?

Man, this is like asking "Which kid is your favorite?"  ;)
Rivetz is our latest partnership announcement. Rivetz's enhanced security capabilities will be used as a security and trust layer for developer projects using the Deco.Network protocol. Stay connected to Deco.network to learn about partnerships as they are announced via:

Has your team been to any major blockchain conferences? Are you planning to attend any soon?

Deconet has a presence at most of the bay area events. One of the co-founders of Deconet, David Sneider is speaking at the Global Blockchain Forum (https://www.gbforum.co) in Santa Clara, CA tomorrow. You should say hello if you're there!

That is really great. I bet you guys learn a lot and get your name out there. Great to know. I will definitely keep my eye out for Deconet at events I make it out to.

How did the team come up with this project? What is the main goal you guys hope to accomplish with Deconet?
Hi! Deconet is part of a movement to make open source a more viable career path. I would recommend taking a look at this latest article that explains very well how/why we want to solve for this problem. https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3 (https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3). Additionally, this deep dive video interview with one of the co-founders, David Sneider, should give you a great overview as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urq97FQsvDQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urq97FQsvDQ)

Thanks for the reply and for providing helpful links. I believe you guys have a solid project that provides real solutions that could positively change open-source development. I really like the idea of having a marketplace for code. It is an excellent idea and I also really like that you are helping individual coders leverage dual licensing.

Once you purchase some open source code, can you then alter it? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the details.
Restrictions will differ by license, but the value of open source code lies with your ability to use it and modify it to fit your specific needs. Some examples of the process can be found in this article (https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3). Also, please make sure to join our Telegram (http://t.me/deco_network) for updates.

It is good to see that there will likely be the ability to modify the code to do what you need. I think that's the major concern I was having because, as you said, that is the value of open source code. It makes sense that certain licenses will have different restrictions. Thanks for the examples. It is more clear now.

Thanks for the feedback! The bounty program is picking up speed, but it certainly helps the more people help promote. Would love if you tell all your friends!

I am glad the bounty is becoming successful. I absolutely plan to tell people about it because this project, with enough users, can be very great. The more people who know, the better deconet will become. Also, the rewards for this bounty are well worth it.

Do you think a talented developer could work full time on a platform like Deconet?
Yes, that's absolutely the vision for what Deconet is building. We think open source developers should be able to earn a living working from anywhere. Check out this article that explains the model (https://medium.com/deconet/the-new-deal-for-the-open-source-community-92567f68f3a3). Also, David Sneider talks a bit about this in his deep dive video interview with Origin (https://medium.com/originprotocol/origin-partner-interviews-deconets-david-sneider-106600cd1a95).

Also - don't forget to join the conversation on http://t.me/deco_network (http://t.me/deco_network)!

That is definitely the future of development. I really hope Deconet takes off. I see no reason for developers to be confined to any particular location. They should be able to work from anywhere and I believe that Deconet can make that happen.

It is good to see you guys are rewarding use of DCO. I think that's very important. Also, I will keep that in mind about the discount at TGE. That's an excellent idea as well. When is the TGE?

Details to come - join the Telegram channel to be the first to know! http://t.me/deco_network

I definitely am joining Telegram :D Will you guys also announce it here? I just want to make sure I don't miss out on any of these major announcements. Speaking of which, what are your teams main goals for this quarter?
Telegram is best, but we will likely be sharing here as well. Focusing on dual licensing and API Commercialization on ETH mainnet this quarter

What does API Commercialization entail? Do you have a link that explains it for beginners?

No article yet, but that's a great idea! Sellers now have a second way to earn money from their code, they can sell access to a given function via API. APIs are how applications interface with each other.

So will those looking to get code done, could they search job postings in order to pool their resources and make the reward for a particular piece of code that much higher?
Yes - that’s certainly within the scope of the product road map.

The bonus campaign has a lot of social media channels (reddit, fb, tw, linkedln) but every day only two post. That means that each person is allowed only one social channel. I think 2 posts for each social media channel is reasonable

Hi! I like your project, I want to know. There is an approximate date for Token Sale, and how much will it cost DCO?

I see that the presale hasn't started yet. Is there a way to earn Deco tokens right now?

Yes, 2 ways. You can sign up for the waitlist at deco.network/waitlist or participate in the bounty sharing program at bounty.deco.network. TGE hasn't happened yet, but you can begin earning DCO!
