Title: [Mods: NUKE 120 act] Commercial Spambots post and delete 1000s of posts per day
Post by: LoyceV on May 18, 2018, 06:59:23 PM
I'll add nuke-requests to new posts in this thread, 140 accounts are waiting to be nuked!

Earlier today I posted about paid Bump Bots in another thread:

I read this today:
Quote from: anonymous source...
We have two promotion plans:
1) Your thread (ANN/Bounty/other) will be always at the top 24 hours a day.
Your project will be attract more attention from investors and bounty hunters.
This plan will not increase the number of post in your thread, but your thread will be always at the top.

We will also increase the views of your thread:
- minimum 50 000 reads per week
- minimum 200 000 reads per month

The largest plan - your thread will be all time on 1st place
Price for 1 thread:
- 0.3 ETH (0.025 BTC) per day
- 1.5 ETH (0.13 BTC) per week
- 5 ETH (0.42 BTC) per month

Simple plan - your thread will be all time at the top (on 1-8 places)
Price for 1 thread:
- 0.15 ETH (0.012 BTC) per day
- 0.75 ETH (0.06 BTC)per week
- 2 ETH (0.16 BTC) per month

2) Increasing the number of posts in thread.
The price for one page (one page has 20 posts) is 0.05 ETH (0.004 BTC)
In just 1 ETH (0.08 BTC) you will receive 20 pages (400 quality posts).
This is a whole new level of spamming :(

To see this in action:
Go to Tokens (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=240.0), click one of the top-threads, go to the last post on the last page, and reload the page a few times.
Random Newbie accounts posts some generic BS, delete it so they don't get banned, then do it again.

I can think of several solutions:
1. Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore. Update, as discussed here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3955810.msg37935061#msg37935061), it's probably better to exclude Jr. Members too.
2. Nuke all Newbies who have deleted more than x (say x=2, make it x=5 if they  have more than 14 posts) of their own posts.
3. Take away the possibilities for Newbies to delete their posts.
4. Require a captcha for Newbies for either posting and/or deleting a post.
5. Create "deletelog.php", similar to https://bitcointalk.org/modlog.php but for all posts deleted by Newbies (this would be a first step to hunt them down, not a solution to the problem).

I would love to post a long list of Newbie accounts involved, but it's too much work to hunt them down manually. I think this requires some Admin magic to end it.

The result in screenshots (the first post is the same in all screenshots, the last post changes all the time):

Also, noticed this. I remember this was happening in the marketplace too. Perhaps another solution would be to increase the cool down for a newbie to delete a post. Something which is separate to the cool down to post. Would give time to identify if they are abusing the deletion button without hindering them completely.

I can think of several solutions:
-Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore.

Good idea, and doesn't hurt the users posting directly. Without disallowing newbies completely.
-Nuke all Newbies who have deleted more than x (say x=2, make it x=5 if they  have more than 14 posts) of their own posts

Probably unnecessary.
-Take away the possibilities for Newbies to delete their posts

Would hinder legitmate usage of deleting posts.
-Require a captcha for Newbies for either posting and/or deleting a post

Could work. Would probably be a pain in the arse for legitimate users.

How about this. If a thread has x number of deleted posts, then change the post sequence to latest first.

Yes this is happening for a very long time. I have monitored some newbie accounts. Activity keep changing and it's never the same as the post counts.
They are always registered from two weeks to a month ago even if they are brand new.

This will be a good solution to have a longer cool down but I guess they gonna use more bots with longer post intervals.

I think you would rather want to punish the individual as opposed to the thread itself. The reason being, this could be abused when involving project/website competition, leading to people trying to spam post/delete on threads to shut them down.

IMO, the first option (preventing newbies from bumping the thread) would be best. It should still mark it as unread (similar to when someone edits a post in a thread but it's not bumped) so that discussions can be had.

Maybe but they have to wait a few minutes to post and typing captcha every few minutes shouldn't be that hard. At least that "check the box" captcha. Also, they'd quite quickly move on to the higher rank that would not require captcha, so this one can work quite well.

Or just limit newbies to all but alternative cryptocurrencies section. If suppose they want to post there, buy a copper membership. There is one disadvantage to this, copper membership is relatively cheaper than what the people doing this are making. They would spend the money on this, so probably increase the membership fee or something like that.

If the captcha is only shown to delete posts, most Newbies will never even see it. Even the spammers won't be bothered by it, but it can end this paid bumping.

I'll try to scrape a list of involved accounts to be nuked.

Why don't you check out who is paying "them" to do the bumping?
If "they" aren't one in the same person(s) you'd expect to be paying for the bumps in the first place..

That's not something they discuss out in the open, and thus impossible for me to find.

How? It would probably only be possible if we set up some honeypots to catch them in the act but no doubt a lot of these services require payment first as well. I've asked a couple of ICOs who've been caught using them who or what companies they are using and they either never respond or give vague answers. One just gave me a link to a person's linkedin where he claimed he was contacted about their bumping services so not really that helpful.

I've suggested disallowing lower ranks unless they purchase a copper membership. Not sure theymos wants to be this restrictive though.

Test
I've downloaded the last page of [ANN][DEX-ICO] 🔥🔥CrypTollBooth - New Wallet with Exchange Connected [ICO!] 🔥🔥💰💰 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3291145.100) 302 times, with x seconds interval (x: I'm not going to post my timing information for spammers to read).

The following list shows how many of the downloaded pages contain posts from that account. The first 4 are real posts that haven't been deleted (they are in all downloaded pages), the 36 accounts after that are bumpbots (they post and delete their spam). There is a very small chance on of them was a user who really posted something and deleted it again, but that's very unlikely.

Mods: am I trusted enough for you to nuke those accounts if I provide lists like this, without further evidence? If so, I'll process other threads too.
I'm curious to see how quickly the next batch of bots starts spamming after these are nuked.
If bumpbots can be nuked fast enough, the spammers' business model becomes worthless. That leaves them spamming without deleting posts though, but that's something for another topic.

I can think of several solutions:
1. Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore.

The deletelog.php does look like an interesting idea. While those accounts which have been detected are newbies, it won't take long for the person behind these accounts to farm them up to junior member rank. If at all any restrictions are imposed, they should cover junior members as well.

So the bumping service posts to a thread then deletes the post over and over again to keep a thread on top? That is both ingenious and downright evil. While I am relatively new on bct, I have been using forums since they were called BBSes and I feel that #2, 3 & 4 would be effective without requiring much work on the part of admins/mods. Suggestion #5 would be interesting for statistical purposes but for enforcement would require active searching by mods/admins, so less desirable.

At any rate, I like that you identified a new form of spamming AND came up with potential solutions, so I gave you a merit even though it was analogous to spitting over the railing at Niagara Falls.  ;D

Judging by my data collection, "x" for #2 could be much higher too. I estimate at least 10 posts per hour per account, that makes hundreds of deleted posts per day per account.

Even deleting 1 post per day seems like abnormal behavior, so auto-nuking any newbie and, perhaps, Jr. Member, that deletes more than 2 posts in 24 hours should stop this scheme with near-zero impact on everyone else.

This rule probably shouldn't be applied to higher ranks, though, as there are legitimate reasons why someone might want to delete many of their posts all at once (e.g. - participating in a thread that turns nasty).

Don't forget the legit bumps, that can only happen once every 24 hours, and requires deletion of the old bump. I have a few threads that I bump once in a while.

Meanwhile, working on the next thread :D Each thread (after testing 4 of them) uses 35 Newbie accounts for bumpspam. That makes it quite obvious the same person is behind all of it.

I can think of several solutions:
1. Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore.

Jr Members should be added to this also, as the requirement is only activity, they will just create a thousand more accounts, post garbage to level up and add more accounts to their army of bumpers.
I know it might sounds harsh, but it does not affect the user at all, they still get to share their "opinion"   ;)

2. Nuke all Newbies who have deleted more than x (say x=2, make it x=5 if they  have more than 14 posts) of their own posts.
3. Take away the possibilities for Newbies to delete their posts.

I think this should be enforced for everybody on this forum.
Lots of hacked accounts are deleting their history, shills are deleting proofs after the scam ICO has finished and many more....
I'm active on another forum where you can't edit your posts after 1 hour nor can you delete them, and it's pretty funny  especially in the politics section to look at the users history and then rub it in their face   ;D ;D.

4. Require a captcha for Newbies for either posting and/or deleting a post.

I would love a captcha that would make them read the rules on the forum, like typing the second word, the last character or the first of a random rule around here.  ;D ;D

But...whatever it is, something must be done!

I've been thinking that something like a shadow ban could be useful in these situations , and a few others. It seems most of these bots are using the same phrases without even changing a character. They've been doing this for a few days now. I'm sure mitchell could hook up his bot to automatically flag these phrases or report them automatically so there's a little bit of human interpretation to avoid any issues. Then if they feel the account is guilty of posting, and then deleting it's responses in hopes of bumping the topic it could get shadow banned.

Meaning they would see it as if they were posting their message, and deleting it. But, in reality no one else sees it. They are obviously running automated systems so probably wouldn't even realize. Even, if they did it would only take a little manual observation to determine their new sets of phrases, and add them to Mitchells bot.

I've noticed the example above posted by the exact same person for a few days now. "lastlinger". In fact just posted once again. I think this confirms that there aren't to many newly registered accounts doing this, and they are simply reusing their current accounts. Banning these members would likely result in them registering a new account, and starting over. Although, shadow banning could make it more difficult for them to tell.

This wouldn't really help the situation that the OP is about though. As they aren't waiting for a hour to pass, and are simply just deleting them after a few seconds have passed.

This bot is designed to post bumps, with a time interval (24 hour rules), and it even deletes it's last bump..

I read about this bot a long time ago, at the time it seemed to me to abide by forum rules for bumping and was a pretty cool idea.

So all your code of this is probably there in this bot, just change it a little bit to delete differently and post at a different interval, scale it up a bit, and you have what we see here with this new bumping scheme..

Here are a couple more search results..
https://github.com/achow101/BctalkBumpBot
https://github.com/buxlover/autobump

Nuking all the bump bot accounts may result in collecting a lot more evil fees..

I think you will have to take away the abilities of new accounts to make so many deletes to really stop it, until they find their next loophole..

Once again I'll say I'd like to find a way to make the companies themselves take the heat for it but their may not be a realistic way..

A shadow ban works only on the account you use, the spammer who has 35 accounts in his bot is unlikely to read the forum from any one of those accounts. Unless you mean their current bots won't get a banned-error and don't realize they need to switch to the next batch of accounts > that would work!

What bot is this? This is the first time I hear about it.

I love it! It won't stop bots, but it will teach humans how to behave on the forum.

I've tested 3 more threads. During the time it took me to download the last page 500 times, some real posts were added too. I'll have to adjust my script for that, for now I'll manually mark those.
Please nuke all accounts that I didn't strike through.

A shadow ban works only on the account you use, the spammer who has 35 accounts in his bot is unlikely to read the forum from any one of those accounts. Unless you mean their current bots won't get a banned-error and doesn't realize it needs to switch to the next batch of accounts > that would work!
Yeah that's what I mean. They probably wouldn't notice for at least a while, and any way to inconvenience them would be great.

I think he is referring to MindlessElectron (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1136003)

-snip-

Can't Loyce just be made a mod already? It's obvious to me that they know their stuff and are making the biggest effort out of anyone else on the forum to deal with spam in the altcoin sub forum.

Excluding existing mods of course.

This might be a good decision. We do need more patrollers to take care of the newbie spammers problem.
We could even do this for a month, on a trial basis. :)

The only open Mod-position that I've seen, was for Politics and Society, which is a board I'm not really interested in.
But I don't think being a Mod is a position to ask for, so I'll just drop subtle hints that I wouldn't mind having a nuke button ;)

My 4 lists of spammers are still not nuked. I'm not going to report their posts, some don't even have posts.

Someone is going to have to make the thread for you then ;)

I know the current staff work hard but they are simply overworked with the constant spam. Looks to me that you got enough endorsements already. I don't really care who becomes the moderator but I think it's obvious that someone needs to be appointed.

I can think of several solutions:
1. Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore.
This is a good idea but I think that you should bump it up to Jr. Members as well. With the screenshot I posted below you will see on this two threads I saw that Jr. Members are also part of this bumping service as well. Including the Jr. Members as well will help us shut down this kind of services more effectively.

Yeah this is what I was thinking too.
When it comes to collect merit the bots will die.

The copper membership can have the privilege to bump a thread, also only Copper members can start an Ann thread /and members above Jr. of course/.

That's probably better. My initial assumption was it takes them longer to rank up their bots, but indeed, requiring at least a Member account to bump a thread stops the spam-to-rank-up before the bots even start it.

With the screenshot I posted below you will see on this two threads I saw that Jr. Members are also part of this bumping service as well.
The posts didn't get deleted, so they fall into a different category:
That leaves them spamming without deleting posts though, but that's something for another topic.
Useless trivial posts to bump and fill a thread are also part of the "service" offered by paid spammers ("1 ETH (0.08 BTC) for 400 posts"), but catching them requires manually checking the posts. I'm not sure how often they use the same phrase, and patrol (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=recent;patrol) doesn't show Jr. Members' posts, so it's much harder to automate checking.

Including the Jr. Members as well will help us shut down this kind of services more effectively.
Agreed. Let's hope Admins can implement this, I don't know if this requires a lot of work.

Bump for moderator attention :D

The bumpdeletespam still continuous, and will probably keep going as long as they earn from doing so. I'd like to see all involved accounts banned, but I'll need someone with the nuke power to help me.

....
I'm active on another forum where you can't edit your posts after 1 hour nor can you delete them
...
I would go for something similar, like switching totally off the possibility of deleting/editing a post (and not after an hour, but totally), no delete/edit for a week from now, and that would clearly show who are the bumping users and how they do this bumping service.
It won't hurt really nobody except the bumper spammers (and it won't need much coding)
Someone who has a really good reason to delete a post, can ask for it in the Meta (or report itself to a moderator)...

I use the edit button a lot (for legit reasons). Especially when I open a thread by myself, I want to be able to update the first post (and that can be months later).
I'd be okay to disable this feature for the lower ranks. If Copper members are excepted, I'd be okay to disable it for all ranks, and pay for Copper membership. But I don't think taking away functionality from legit users is a solution.

I have suggestion to add the additional post count to the profile /including the deleted posts/ so those are easily spotted. It could be toggled same as the current post count.

So if I understand correctly, these are basically bots and are not posting manually? Right?

Nuking won't help much because you will have to nuke them manually, but understand that they post automatically based on a certain script, so the rate of creation of such accounts can be much easier than nuking of these account.

Is the new forum software equipped well enough to face these spam challenges?

Creating new accounts requires a captcha, and nuking accounts increases the evil score (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4101785.0) for the IP addresses used.

It would be ideal if a ban-bot takes care of this, but until then, all I can do is report them.

I am this close to open a make-me-Mod-thread here, so I can have my own ban-button.

Well c'mon, do it. Many people will support your application, including me.
The forum can only benefit from this.
It's not up to vote (it has been tried (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1685559.0)). I won't open such a thread.

I am this close to open a make-me-Mod-thread here, so I can have my own ban-button.

Well c'mon, do it. Many people will support your application, including me.
The forum can only benefit from this.

Title: Re: [paid spamming] Newbie Bump Bots post and delete thousands of posts per day
Post by: Tyrantt on May 23, 2018, 04:26:45 PM
If the captcha is only shown to delete posts, most Newbies will never even see it. Even the spammers won't be bothered by it, but it can end this paid bumping.

Maybe but I believe that captcha would be better when posting a comment AND deleting. Why?

-Well lower ranks need to wait a few minutes to post, therefore one captcha every 5 minutes isn't such a big deal for someone who's not spamming.

- How often do you delete posts? Let's say once a day and even if it's 2-3 times a day, quick captcha wouldn't be such a big hassle.

So with captchas on posting & deleting should slow down spamming significantly.

Thanks Mods for banning those bots! Interesting enough, without the bump bots there hasn't been any new post in that thread for 6 days.

I won't manually check my other list, most of the accounts have been banned, if some got away I'll catch them in their next run.

Banning them is the motivation I needed to continue my hunt, so prepare for more lists to nuke :D

I noticed 🔥[ANN][ICO] Seal - The Currency of Authenticity 💖 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2929809.240) still fills with Brand new spammers, but they don't instantly delete their posts now. I wouldn't be surprised if the spambots adjusted the delay between posts in that thread.

I made a new list of accounts to nuke. The "strike through" lines are from accounts that don't instantly delete their posts. My counter at the start of each line is off by 2 posts (sorry).

In this post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3509859.msg36209385#msg36209385) in the Portuguese section, only Bot posts something. And they also post on other similar topics. No one writes the way they're writing, so it's clear they're using a translator. What, by the rules, is forbidden in the local sections.

Let me list one here, I was about to report it but deleted the only post he had.

I think we need a report button on the profile page in case there are no posts. Otherwise I have to bother the mods with PMs or put it in the list.

They're copy and pasting from the looks of it:

A man starts with good health, but he is not happy with it. Man sacrifices his health to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present. The result being that he does not live in the present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die and then dies having never lived at all

He’s got a great idea of how to disrupt his industry. I think his idea is great. Drew and I had coffee to discuss his options.

Look at this thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4438289.3780

Filled with 'joined' posts by new accounts. Those posts make no sense and aren't serving as proof for any part of the campaign, they're clrearly using them as a distraction to keep bumping the thread. 190+ pages of spam in 5 days...

Edit: Another bounty that seems to be doing the same

Edit2:
Announcement thread that appears to be utilizing spam bumping

Lots of one liners from new accounts

I've been thinking that something like a shadow ban could be useful in these situations
A shadow ban works only on the account you use, the spammer who has 35 accounts in his bot is unlikely to read the forum from any one of those accounts. Unless you mean their current bots won't get a banned-error and don't realize they need to switch to the next batch of accounts > that would work!

Quote
I'm sure mitchell could hook up his bot to automatically flag these phrases
What bot is this? This is the first time I hear about it.

I would love a captcha that would make them read the rules on the forum, like typing the second word, the last character or the first of a random rule around here.  ;D ;D
I love it! It won't stop bots, but it will teach humans how to behave on the forum.

I agree with (mostly) all that has been said.
But, to be honest, from a couple of weeks I have begun to think that the best solution can be:
1.- Newbie's jail. Yes, I don't completely like it, but, given all the spams, newcomers, etc, I think this is the moment to implement that again. The forum is becoming a newbies-spam-fest and the place for "forever Juniors" because it is easy to create an infinite number of new accounts and just use the ctrl+C and ctrl+V buttons in your computer. If newbies can only post in one board, probably it will change it.
2.- 5 Merits to become Jr. Member. Why? When you become JR, under my proposal, you will be able to go out to the jail. If you have to earn 5 merits in order to do so, maybe the Jrs will have some quality. Just take a look at all those "forever juniors" we have in the forum: people with hundreds of posts and no merit...

Of course, it can make the merit farming and trade more "popular", but also easier to detect, for all the newbies will be in a jail, and the ones receiving non-deserving merits will be easier to discover.

This is just an opinion. I'm tired. I'm tired of just seeing how each day the newbies and Forever Juniors come and spam and spam the forum, endlessly.

I think in this jail, also we maybe will find some deserving merits newbies and ease the work to some concerned sources.

+1 for the newbie jail, but I think it won't come back (neither as a merit jail)
If the newbie jail would come back, it could raise the prices of the jr. accounts (with or without merits) so the 5 merit seems fine to escape the jail, because in this situation, the thousands of jr. member account without merits would become worthless...
In order to be able to handle the situation that this change can cause, the beginner's board (or any board which will be dedicate to let the newbies spam post there) should have more mods in the beginning and more merit sources. If we concentrate the newbies into one place, mods of the other boards will have less work, so they can help in the beginner section also.
Also, mods of the beginner board should give no mercy to those who copypaste or spam, because account farmers would still try to raise their activity in the beginning...
I know there's no solution that will be good for everyone, but something should be done, the sooner the better...

Anyone here with more technical knowledge and insight that could be able to speculate as to whether those spamming efforts might be automated?
My feeling is that it might be a possibility. It seems to me like threads will shoot back up at the top as soon as they leave the front page and it feels like this is done in automation.

I know that there are limitation in place already like a time limit. But the time limit can't exactly help in posting not being automated... Currently those accounts are being created and start posting faster than the mods can purge them. When spam responses to each spam-promoted thread are shy of 500 per day it would be hard for a handful of humans to keep deleting accounts and moreover pointless if the spammers can utilize newly created accounts.

My suggestions for the simpler solutions I can come up with:
1. Remove pumping powers from new accounts.
2. Implement reCaptcha for each post to new accounts posting in frequently spammed sub-forums.

#1 Would no longer allow spammers to use new accounts for their effors. Anyone would be able to post anything but it wouldn't have any value in 'bumping'
#2 Would make it harder to automate posting. I can't be sure if anyone has managed to automate posting on bitcointalk but it would be a countermeasure for reassurance.

If you mean about the removing of the pumping power that if a newbie posts in a thread it won't jump on the top of the list (if it's sorted by latest post), this can be a solution.

Unfortunately, this would impact the 'normal' newbie accounts too, and they won't get help (or it will be real hard to ask for help) if they can't get the topic to the top of the list with an important question posted in the topic.
A kind of solution could be not to implement this feature on the beginner's board, to let newbies ask for help, but restrict newbies (even jr.members also) on the other boards from bumping...

Yes, there could be exceptions for certain boards.

I think putting that restriction only in Announcements (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0), Tokens (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=240.0) and Bounties (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=238.0) should be enough, at least initially. There's no reason to restrict them from boards such as Technical Support, or Development and Technical Discussion.

Possibly, but they can ask whatever they need in their "newcomers" board. Anyway, seems a great solution to the spam problem: Newbie jail (it can be in more than just one board) and 5 merits required to Jrs.
The point about having them in just one board is based on the willing of easing the work to mods and merit sources. From time to time you can find a great newbie making his/her best, so maybe the "newcomers" board can be a great place for merit sources to look for them.
Besides, as told before, it will ease the work of many other moderators. The Bitcoin Discussion board, as well as the Politics & Society, Marketplace or the Altcoin board,  are a mess. You just can't enjoy a good debate anymore in those ones, even if you try to start one soon will become a spam-fest.

Something needs to be done. The forum is decaying too fast.

If we're going to have a newbie jail with merit I believe it would be better to have a limit based on 'receive merit by x people' instead of just 'receive x merit'.

Surely it will prevent farming, but to implement that is kind of difficult, isn't it? Anyway, I don't see it coming. Merits, for the moment, are helping on the ranking-up matter for those who don't deserve to rank-up, but each day some new boards become a spam-fest. Beginners&Help is almost all about bounties now, as well as so many others. Even here in Meta most of the new topics are about merits, rank-up, or scam persecution (necessary as hell, given the situation), but, I don't know, I think we need to come back to good discussions and to help the people interested in knowledge instead of some bucks from their airdrops.
Anyway, I don't see any action to be taken, at least for the moment, sadly.

It's deleted by now.

The thread title doesn't apply anymore since theymos' changes, but the spam still continues elsewhere, so a bump.

This is Cyrillic "a" so you can just copy what I wrote.
You can see what the hompgraph cheaters are doing now ;)

PS is there a modlog history database?I used BPIP before but now there's nothing available.
