Is there anything on there of good value?  From what I recalled before, they only shipped to the the US.

Bought some couch pillows and "stuff holder" for the shower. Amazing how costly "stuff holders" are. I suppose the lesson there is I need to get rid of some stuff.

Slight issue on checkout was mostly my end -- yesterday I had trouble getting Coinbase to load in browser and refreshed it several times at which Coinbase banned me from logging in for 24 hours. So on checkout from Overstock they wanted me to login to Coinbase to pay, but of course I had been banned, so I had to do a secondary option where I just scan the QR and paid from my iphone (which had previously been logged into Coinbase anyway). So, no biggie, it worked.

I was also concerned because I have had a failed Coinbase purchase at Gyft, 1.5BTC which now makes me wary about using Coinbase to pay, however the success notice at Overstock came absolutely immediately, no "up to 15 minute" wait like there is when someone has the BitPay intermediary screen (waiting for payment to hit the network). I imagine this is because Overstock is integrated with Coinbase.

I had purchased quite a number of things at Xmas via BTC and I only had to wait about 4-10 seconds for each to process through BitPay. This overstock purchase was immediate via Coinbase.

They ship internationally, however only us-customers can use btc. Does not make to much sense imho, probably legal reasons.

Thanks!  Good to know.  I can ship stuff to a US warehouse, so might do that if I see anything exciting.

I see that they answered: "International is in the works! We'll make an announcement when it's live."
And I replied that I'm waiting with an item in my shopping cart. :)

It's certainly good news and a good start, but I'm not a fan of Overstock.com lol

I'll be much more excited when Amazon or Newegg begin to accept btc

FYI,  I was trying to get rid of the very small amount of coin I have on GOX so I used my account there to make the purchase on Overstock and I sent about 0.06 twice.  I hit the "confirm" button after it was already sent. Why does gox even have the "confirm" button after it is sent?  That makes it hard for blonds like me. ;)  Oh well, I called overstock and they are taking care of it though.  They just sent me an email asking for my wallet address and they will send back the extra amount.  If I had used Coinbase though it would have been easier though.  But at least we know Overstocks customers service is pretty good.  The guy I talked to said that "he was really excited about Bitcoin!"  They have been busy!   ;D

Someone should buy a car or truck. Maybe not right now! But it's the kind of thing that you don't get a lot of choice with in bitcoin retailers till now, unless you've got Lamborghini or Tesla money, from what I've heard :D

If we could make car dealers think about accepting bitcoin, that adds a nice bit of momentum to the movement. Gotta be attractive to them: instant funds clearing, no fraudulent card purchases, keeping that 3-4% they always hand to the processor, etc.

Can we buy cars with overstock?

My Dad wants a Camaro.

This is the only one I could find on there:

What's great about this is the press this will get:

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/overstockcom-first-online-retailer-to-accept-bitcoin-239488961.html

And of course is maybe they will increase business and it will reflect in Overstock's earnings.  If business increases, other retailers will take notice and go in the same direction.

Same here.  I could not find a single fucking thing that I wanted after a couple of minutes looking around :(

At least the stuff isn't massively overpriced like most of the previous attempts at selling trinkets for bitcoin.  That's welcome progress in my book.

This is common misconception. Like that 10k btc pizza. You buy pizza for 10k bitcoins and its ok. But wrong is to not buy back your bitcoins right away for the same $ price you bought that pizza. If you think they will be worth more later that is.

I've been waiting for that as well, but I'm not they will announce that anytime soon.  They -may- announce that at their next earnings call.

Helps Coinbase though with press also:

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/2014/01/overstockcom-coinbase-bitcoin.html

Coinbase up to 771,000 customers.  Wonder if they means signed up for an account or actually purchased at least a fraction of a coin?

CEO says:

“Our first purchase with Bitcoin was a $2700 patio set,” says Byrne from Salt Lake City, where the company is based. In the first 90 minutes of Bitcoin sales, the site had received about 150 orders. Byrne says the company’s rough estimate is that 1% of its sales in 2014, or approximately $13 million, will come in the form of Bitcoin. “It’s a wild guess,” he says.

Respect to the guy for his technique of locking 40 people in a room to get it up and running in 10 days!

Let's show Byrne how to, er, "choo choo, mfs!!!" (as they put it in the speculation thread)    :)

Exactly why Overstock has a market cap of $700MM and Amazon has one of $183B!  Overstock is hanging on, and they are actually profitable, but there's a reason we can't find much we want on there, it's basically a surplus shop now.

1) Announce in December Overstock will launch in June
2) Launch in January

That's what I call strategy :)

I will buy everything I would have normally bought from Amazon on Overstock if the price difference isn't too great. (with BTC). You have to understand if people do this then the value of your other BTC holding goes up and the economy develops very quickly.

Unfortunately it's not enabled for international yet but hopefully soon.

Didn't buy much, just some bath towels and a toaster over I am planning to turn into a reflow oven.    Most of the item on there seemed to be of low quality  but, there were some gems if you searched a while.  I think if Amazon  starts accepting BTC, I'll need to start mining again.  ;-)

Obviously we're all hopefully Amazon one day does start using Bitcoin.  Companies like these certainly can, they don't ship immediately so can wait for the desired confirmations that will satisfy them.  And maybe a user with a credit card back can have 0 or 1 confirmations and still be ok if close to shipping cut off time.

But Amazon offers its own sponsored credit card.  They give 3% cash back, and most likely receive some sort of cut back from Chase, the issuing bank.  I still think if more online retailers offer it Amazon will.  Jeff B. is an innovative thinker and likes to be ahead of the curve.

I bought a Cold Steel heavy duty sword cane. :)

I was going to buy it on amazon (since I have some amazon credit built up), but they mysteriously stopped selling it there *sigh*

I noticed it on Overstock, and at a pretty comparable price to Amazon's, so I bought it there instead :)

I would love if Amazon accepted bitcoins directly instead of having to buy amazon gift cards through gyft.com

A photo of that sword cane when it arrives would be great if possible.  :)

Hell, a link would be enough for starters already! ;-)

Sorry all, here's a link :)  watch the videos! :)

 http://www.coldsteel.com/Sword-Canes.aspx (http://www.coldsteel.com/Sword-Canes.aspx)

Hell for the matter, if you like hacking and slashing, watch all the Cold Steel videos.  :)  My favorites are when they're hacking up a hog corpse.  Then you think, "holy shit that would fuck up my rib cage!" (or leave a giant gash in you, etc.

They make good knives, and they prove it via video!   Some people make fun of the owner since he's short/stocky/husky and talks funny, but his swords/knives kick ass!  If you can't tell, I love Cold Steel :)

If you ever watch a video of him knife-fighting, you learn quickly that he knows his shit.

I bought several handbags!  So excited!  They were on sale 90% off too!  And I used the small amount of coin I still had on Gox.  That is one way to get rid of coins left there!  ;D

Please could you post a picture of those handbags when you can?  :)

Got a few different styles of these.  They will make nice gifts too.  I know most guys won't care though. ;)

I am on a business trip in the US at the moment and thank god for overstock.

I have tried to purchase several items on other online stores with my credit card but gave up due to the billing address and shipping address being in different countries.

Think about that for a moment.

I jumped on to Overstock, bought a watch for myself.

http://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/Citizen-Mens-Scuba-Fin-Stainless-Steel-Watch/8437727/product.html

And some Lip balm and foot scrubs for my better half back home.

I had all the goods in the Checkout, but then decided to look for a coupon.  I found one that gave me 10% off the total (For new customers only) and that was applied with no questions asked.  That saved $31 US.

The checkout process was trivial (I used the "Check out as Guest" option) and after firing up my Multibit spending wallet, I got confirmation of my transactions instantly.

Go Bitcoin Go!

10% off coupon!!! Oh man, I could have really used that!

This is where I got it.

It opens the overstock web site with the code embedded in the URL

I bought a Cold Steel heavy duty sword cane. :)

I was going to buy it on amazon (since I have some amazon credit built up), but they mysteriously stopped selling it there *sigh*

So being the blond that I am I hit "Confirm" twice when I sent funds from Gox to Overstock the other day.  I saw that my payment was received on Overstock.com so I went back to gox and the button still said, "Confirm" so I clicked it thinking it was asking if it had been sent but then it sent my payment twice.

All that said, Overstock.com sent me 0.07 coins (I only sent them 0.06 but I guess the price per BTC went down a bit from when I paid.)

BitChicksHusband said I should post this so you all could see that it passed the "BHT"  or the "Blond Housewife Test."

And if any of you guys want me to beta test any other shopping sites you are more than welcome to send coins my way.   ;D  I guess I am good at it!

You managed a "Double Spend", just not the type we normally talk about here ;)

Good they sent the coins back promptly, and heck, you even made a profit!

Yes.  I never shopped there before, but now maybe I need to take a look.  Just to support the bitcoin community I mean.

I went back again to look for something I can use.  I changed my mind about the prices being reasonable.  Lots of them are actually not.  Worse, it's a God-awful mess to try to find things in the native categorization tree.  Plenty of the things (e.g., I was looking for a reasonable sized UPS) were blatant rip-offs.  Then they might have basically the same item multiple times with wildly different prices (and utterly absurd 'compare' readings.)

I always respected Byrne's fights against the naked short/ financial media criminals, but the honest truth is is that the Overstock web-site seems to suck beyond usability and I cannot see any particular value that these guys are bringing to the table.

Some of you programmers should offer to make the site easier to browse for payment in BTC.   ;D

Ironically I worked for a company once who had them as a customer for certain services, but that's probably about all I should say about it.  Thankfully my job didn't involve trying to clean up messes like the one under discussion.

The messes I had to clean up involved security and could be handled in one of several ways.  1) Either not have security problems, or 2) have such lame monitoring that what intrusions might exist go undetected and thus don't take a lot of one's energy.  I employed a combination of both strategies :)

I bought some shoes to do my bit to help promote, though I had never purchased
from them before.  I have to wonder though what the ongoing btc revenue rate will be
for them after the one-shot first time response of people like me.

I guess the general question is

A merchant can save the ~3% and shed risk, but what is the incentive
for joe consumer to bother with bitcoin?

Even if they pass on some
of the savings, $89.95  becoming $89.05  would not be enough to
make me bother.  Maybe it helps a lot with micro-payments, but
do you think it will ever attain widespread, consistent use?

It seems like the big value of it are the things (avoiding taxation, inflation,  litigation, tracking)
that will cause great friction with the powers that be.

You do not have to use a credit card. Not every one has credit. Not everyone will use their credit card online cuz hackors...

If a guy goes to a BTC ATM he does not even need a bank to buy stuff online.

Edit: Also with credit cards you can only have stuff shipped to your address. With BTC you can ship to where ever you happen to be.

I'm sure there are more advantages.

Actually, when I pay with my credit card, I have stuff shipped to my work address, which is different than my billing address.

That works for me when the billing and shipping address are in the same country.

That failed for me when I go OS. (Australian Billing address, US Shipping address)

There site is a bit of a mess. I did however find some deals but I'm sure I was looking at different stuff than you. Also some of the stuff they sell just looks like complete crap, very low quality. But then again they have high end high quality stuff too.

I also noticed that they have repeat listings of the same product at different prices. I'm pretty sure the way overstock works is that they let others sell goods on their sites. I have had items ship from all over and never directly from "overstock". The shipping is no where near as fast as amazon.com but I will use overstock for some stuff as I want to support sites that support BTC.

When/if I get a house we will consider buying a bunch of furniture and what not from them.

In my first flirtation with Overstock last week I found they shipped my chosen timekeeping instrument faster than Amazon had shipped anything to me recently. Thanks to the multiple sellers situation they do have some good deals. Probably just not good enough deals to pay for with BTC.

I also bought a watch. Pretty happy with it.

May I ask which one?

I have completed another 3 orders with Overstock all with coupons and each item was within a couple of percent price-wise compared to the other online retailers.

I've found that paying with bitcoin to overstock.com isn't cheap.  The value converter in my Mycelium client consistantly quotes the bitcoin price about 10% higher than what Overstock says it is.

Your wallet probably uses MtGox rates, which don't really have a basis in reality. Overstock uses CoinBase, which is tied to the Bitstamp price, which is far more reasonable.

Actually, when I pay with my credit card, I have stuff shipped to my work address, which is different than my billing address.

How does that work? I can't get anything shipped to me other than my home/billing address.

Most (all?) places have a section for billing address and a section for shipping address.  However since it's assumed that most people are having things shipped to where they live, when you fill in the billing address info it's copied over to the shipping address section.  You just have to manually change the shipping address to wherever you want it shipped to.
