Title: Why people don't vote?
Post by: dogtana on June 04, 2018, 02:41:36 PM
We recently had election and only about a half of voters turned up for the vote.

Don't people realise it is their democratic right to vote, to be able to influence where we are going as society? Don't they realise what a priviledge this is compared to old times and places with no democracy. It is a duty and responsibility in my opinion. If you don't vote, then don't complain!

Ummm...
There are some many countries where democracy is just a circus. I can absolutely understand why people do not believe in democracy anymore and prefer to stay home instead of going to vote for someone they don't believe in.
Platon wrote "Democracy is the tyranny of the ignorant people", for he thought you can make people stupid enough so they vote for the worst candidates, and this is kind of true...
Anyway, look at the world. The common feeling I see in the people is dejection. Humanity is losing the hope in the future, for the present is chaotic and unfair. Maybe is just that: people can't see the point of going to vote anymore, for everything is a big circus and they have the feeling they can do nothing about.
Maybe they are right, perhaps they are wrong. I just understand the feeling.

Most people know there vote doesn't really matter.  all the candidates are from the "inner circle" and are all pushing big government so it doesn't make much of a difference.

You said it yourself. Its our right to vote and we live in a democracy. Well, if they chose to have no part in an election, dont you think thats their right too and thats what democracy means? Having a decision whether appropriate or not? People misunderstood each other for thousands of years and believe me, being a law-abiding citizen is better than a qualified voter.
Qualified voters are often used for personal political gain of a running politician, some voters sell their votes for a price of course.
no offense but personal opinions are free whether your'e a voter or not. Just sayin.

Because you can allocate your time to better things than getting so obsessed in who to vote for and allot time to actually vote for them. First, the candidates, you don't know them personally. So in order to actually know who you should vote for, you're going to do a research by your own about them. And it's not just research about what they are promising to the world, but all of their achievements as well as their dark side. Who does that anymore?

People are bombarded by campaigns saying that this person is a good candidate because of this and that. At the end of the day, even if you go all the effort to vote who's deserving, people are always going to be a sheep. A sheep to what's going on in the world. One candidate is hyped so much and is liked by people, then people are going to vote for that candidate even if it's not the deserving person. All your research will just go to waste unless you educate the people around you that another candidate is more deserving. Who does that? Even if you do try to promote that person and tell everyone about that candidate, you can only influence a couple of people. People will always be a sheep.

Another thing, people don't vote so they free themselves of guilt. If ever the new President is acting up, they can simply say "Oh, I didn't vote for that." They can say that 100% for sure as opposed to voting for one of the many candidates. The candidate they voted for might win and then act up. They will be guilty that they are one of the people who voted for that candidate.

Let's talk on examples. During one of the recent elections in Russia people came to vote and found out that very early in the day the urn was already full of ballots. When the votes were counted, they counted the percents and the total number exceeded 100%, so more than the total number of citizens had to vote on that day. Anyway, Putin won, as always.

Democracy, suppose to be a government of the people for the people and by the people, a process of government where the electorate excercise their franchise and vote in credible candidates they believe have their interest 'electorate' at heart. But these hasnt been the case as the hopes of the masses are dashed to the wall due to the greed, self centeredness exhibited by the elected individuals into  public offices. The political aspirates now see politics as a means to satisfy their personal greed and emerse weath for their generation unborn.

Many people don't vote because of Numbness, detachment, sluggishness, absence of instruction and a total absence of comprehension about the idea of aggregate activity are more probable the genuine reason for their inability to vote. None of their refered to complaints hold any water whatsoever in the event that we could conquer these hidden components.

They dont know the responsibility and they are not into politics.

I am one of those people who doesn't vote during the election. Let me explain why and I am not making any excuse. It so happen that I got busy every time there is a registration to vote. I am in no position to ask for a leave at work because I know how much I am needed. You are right I can't complain about government officials because I am not exercising my right to vote. What I won't stop doing is to comment on what are the right things that the government should have done. Complaining and providing your insight about things are two different categories.

People don't vote for three main reasons. First, they are so intelligent to know that the candidates doesn't deserve their vote, no one deserve their vote. They are so smart to determine who has it and who don't have it. They are so knowledgeable about how politics work in a filthy way. Second, voters are so stupid not voting because they do not know their true power. They are ignorant to determine how powerful their vote is and how it can change the system of the  government. Third and lastly, because of their religion mandate. There are some religious groups who does not exercise their power to vote sincethwy are not allowed to do so.

Different reasons.

1. They don't care.
2. They might care a little but are not motivated.
3. They care but hate the choices they have.

Though it is  our political right to vote, but we refuse to vote and become apolitical because of bad representation from the elected representatives in power. This people that bears the Democratic power neglect the interest of the masses and this has been happening over the years, going to vote again is like wasting ones time because anybody that comes to power will always neglect the interest of the masses. Hence voting without getting the expected outcome is a wastage of vote(as people think)

In my opinion, there are options:
- people are disillusioned with power;
- people are happy with everything and they think that nothing will change.
- does not support either side;
- people believe that they do not concern politics.
In my opinion, you need to vote, every voice can change something.
The policy is directly related to the economy!

In India these are some reason for this...
1.Most of the people left their home town for doing job, they don't want to take pain to come back for voting only.
2.80% election candidate are criminals....
3.Election campaign are based on caste, religion etc.
4.There are no hope with election.

Democracy is a flawed system, but (in my opinion) it still beats a dictatorship. I agree that a fair amount of the time it is pointless, but this doesn't mean it is a complete failure. Apathy is probably the biggest reason people don't vote, as they don't believe that their vote can make a difference, especially at a national level. Local elections can be much more influential, and have a marked impact on services in the area you live. Plenty more to say on the subject, but going to check out my facts first.

Usually, peoples are less aware of their importance to vote, ignoring it and thinking it did not affect if they do not vote. I think we should understand how important it is, our single vote sometimes counts very high in tight political choices.

If you don't vote, you have no right to complain.

Of course governments only spend your money, they are not very productive businesses.  They do however provide useful function: law and order.  Vote for the party that will spend the least to achieve this fundamental function.  Everything else is just waste of taxpayers money.

If you don't like any of the parties, start your own, or vote for the party that you think would best serve your community and your country.

I agree that right now we cannot elect the best, most intelligent members of societies to govern our countries.  We are stuck with electing best orators and/or most popular idiots.  But that is the best system we have.

You either have anarchy (very inefficient), dictatorship (very efficient), or democracy (inefficient).

Small, limited but democratic government is probably the best option.

Unless you have a better idea.

People don't vote for a number of reasons, I will mention a few of them:
1) They don't have confidence in the politicians
2) They feel their vote wouldn't change the outcome
3) They believe the political class hasn't helped them enough and so doesn't deserve their vote
4) Some are afraid of the violence associated with elections especially in third world and developing countries and so tries to avoid it.

Agreed and also want to add the following:

5) The election process is terrible- people have to line up under the sun or in poorly ventilated places for hours just to cast their vote.
6) They do not believe in the government and pretty much do not care who sits in it.
7) They have work during voting hours and cannot be away from it.

This is one of the strongest reason that people assume that nothing is going to change if they do not vote and thus if millions think in same fashion understand when one vote matter so how much millions vote can matter and make a difference. Get up people and do caste your vote at the time of requirement.

Title: Re: Why people don't vote?

The most legitimate reason I can see to not vote is that there may be a credible legal(-ish) argument that by participating in 'the Democratic system' one accepts the outcome.

The victim (the voter) might try to argue that he/she was fooled because there was incomplete information related to the candidates and the winning candidate lied and thus stole the victim's vote.

The counter-argument to the above would be that it is no legal obligation for a candidates to be truthful and they lie on the campaign trail all the time, and there was plenty of information available with a little bit of digging which exposed the fact that the election and (American) dual-party system is a sham where both candidates are put forward by the same financial power-players.  Thus, if the victim was fooled it is their own damned fault.

Simply not voting at all, or not voting in races where I feel there is a fraudulent game going on (most of them) I am formally bowing out and thus am not legally/ethically obligated (in my mind at least) to accept the dictates of the political winner.  (For practical reasons I currently follow almost all laws anyway since most of them are currently not excessively problematic.)  More and more this is exactly what I do with respect to voting, and this is the philosophical justification for my behavior.

People loosing trust on politicians and politics

Can we also include the option that there are a lot of people that want to really vote but they can't? Yes, there are instances, well I can see that every time that the election is there that people are not listed on any voting precinct. The most reason is that either they did not register, though most of these guys don't really want to vote because they don't care, or there has an error on the side of the Commission.

Some do not vote due to religious constraints. But on the larger scale, most people are tired of the same political schemes these candidates throw at them. Politicians are trying to lowball them and when these politicians are kicked out of office, the new ones end up what the previous government did. Maybe in a different way. So in the end, we all get tired of them. After all, they all have the same outcome, so why bother voting.

Sometimes there is a leftist party that is not very wise especially economically, a right party that is not very social and some middle partys that are totally corrupted and dont serve their own people anymore but some higher instances like a Brussels government. Then if you have to choose between them you might decide that it is better not to choose any of them.

Very much agree with the "You don't vote - then stop whining!" approach. And my view is that people tend to be just lazy, especially intellectuals. That's how many populists came into power by dropping empty promises that fall on ignorant ears.
That said, I've read about some blockchain technologies, utilizing Smart Contracts, that would allow at some point in the future to vote confidently from home. Maybe that would increase the voter turnout (and that should scare so many politicians who never deliver on their promises...).

Why should people waste their time to go and vote when is useless to do so.Corrupt politicians will always deceive people to vote them into power and they will show their true colours. Due to this, most people see it useless nowadays to go and vote. They will rather not vote than to go and vote for corrupt people.

Considering my country for instance, voting always takes four years interval and most people decide not to vote. I had some discussion with some of them and they verbalized that it is only the creator who can select a leader and nit we human beings. I was shocked and asked myself that will the creator come physically to elect the leader? I kept quiet and departed since each and every one has different doctrine and ideologies. Do you vote?

"Nothing will change" is the most important thing. This is the disappointment of our population in politics as such. people do not see the possibility of influencing something (and in this case it exists, although a good life does not come at once, and the pumpkin will not turn into a coach in a single hour - this is the guarantee of the work, day after day). But it is also beneficial for the "authorities" that a frustrated society does not interfere in their "politics".

This disappointment is more characteristic of the representatives of the older generation who have seen many things, but my peers also say so.

In this statement, of course, there is a drop of maximalism. Overnight, nothing really changes, everything is built gradually. We can influence this construction by choosing more professional and responsible politicians. Sometimes it needs to be done just to make it not worse.

They have become like some type of enemy, points below

1) You can always find corruption - 100 years of evidence

2) Less and Less we own homes, no shelter - 100 years of evidence

3) War after War faked - 100 years of evidence

4) Politicians playing childish games - 100 years of evidence

5) 66 million dead in Russia (Bolshevik revolution) - hardly anyone knows

6) Debt, debt and more debt

7) Constantly hiding information

8) Systems in place that take forever

9) more and more disease that we have no idea how to cure any of it (always a vaccine though)

10) We have known about pollution for centuries, yet they still destroy more natural habitats and waterways (secret shhhh - trees and fresh water create air)

I could go on

But it just keeps coming back to one realization

Our governments are killing us

sad but true

I must now look to implementing my own Health, Education, Financial, Trade, Manufacturing, Food/Water systems

sucks but the truth of it,

my family generation after generation will continue to be subjected to unwarranted jabbing, financial distress and pollution

All these comments solidify the fact that most of us have lost faith in the voting system. Not only that, but politicians continually fail to put the needs of its citizens first. Why vote when it's already rigged? Why vote when the people in office will just use taxpayer's money for personal gain? Why vote when the government has failed to properly enforce environmental policies?
We only have ourselves to rely on, and that makes it more of a challenge --dealing with dead-end careers, family life, healthcare, the environment, etc.

I think it depends on which country you are referring to? From what I know, many southeast asian countries are very engrossed with voting. They would not miss out on the chance of getting to vote.

One big factor in my opinion. It depends on how corrupted the citizens view its government in power. For instance, if the citizens feel that the government is corrupted and many shady things are done frequently, going out to vote would be a waste of time in their point of view because they know it would not matter. I know some countries who are in that situation (no names shall be given here, let you guys ponder) and almost a third of the population wouldn't even bother voting simply because they feel that the entire system is rigged already right from the start.

I think people try not to involve in something they don't want to believe, it's just a matter of believing in the person you try to elect in a position that will surely affect the community but if you think no one reach your standard then don't vote it's also your freedom to choose not to vote if you think it's useless.

People vote because they are operating under democratic government, which simply mean "Government of the People, by the people and for the people." As citizens, it's our primary obligation to vote in leaders who have our interests in their hearts as their first priority. Also, to exercise our rights as legal citizens.

Voting is indeed our duty and responsibility as citizens to our nation, it's a freedom that we must
not take for granted so easily. A lot are preaching and talking about change, votes account for
that especially on election days. I think some citizens won't cast their votes simply because they
have no desire to be a part of change and they've lost faith in themselves, the system, the government
and maybe the whole process too.

A part of the population is disappointed, but if they were the majority the thieves wouldn't be ruling anything. The problem is that there is an important parcel of the population that supports thieves and helps the system to weaken the good politicians that appear sometimes. A big parcel of the population is part of the problem, they aren't innocents...

It makes the good people lose their hopes and it makes the good politicians give up.

There is also a part of the population that doesn't vote, not because they are disappointed, but because they are alienated and unconcerned about this matter.

People do not vote because they do not find the right person to choose.

There are also people who feel the hope of the previous leader is disappointed, and now they don't believe in the name of democracy.

I think they aren't wrong, what is wrong is the people who make them disappointed.

Sometimes democracy makes us sick. Particularly, in my country, who run as candidates for leaders are people who have a lot of money but lack the ability to lead.

But i respect those who continue to vote, to respect the prevailing laws and democracies and participate in change.

- Agreed.

Voting individually is the whole point - if odern (possibly younger) people realised the death and sacrifices, wars and other terrible suffering that the peoplee have endured; just for the chance to vote..

- I think very rapidly the polling booths would fill.

Personally I do tactical vote - Lib dem/Greens, whatever as yes one vote is meagre; but at least with a one issue or lesser issue party manifesto, your vote carries more inherant 'weight.' ino

Some people do not vote due to a variety of reasons the most popular reason being that they feel democracy would not be achieved whether they vote or not. Another reason may be due to the prevalence of electoral malpractice in the society making people stay at home due to fear for their lives, etc
To solve political apathy,  irregularities in the electoral system should be checked. Also there should be more efforts to educate the masses on the importance of voting.

1.. SAFE SEAT RESIDENTS
Some individuals who have an interest in politics and even support a party, don’t vote as a result of they feel their vote would be wasted.
These are people that live inside parliamentary constituencies with safe seats. If these seats have a powerful majority for a party they do not support they will see very little purpose selection.

2.. NOT ENOUGH KNOWLEDGE
Some individuals believe they don’t understand enough about either the government, the election process or individual party policies to vote.

You just put your country in trouble if you voted a wrong candidate. Imagine, 2-3 years of service, still worthless. No productive campaign, and even trash propaganda. Voter apathy is a prevailing problem in many democracies. The reasons are not far-fetched. Why people don't vote? The real question is, "Why DO people vote?"

Consider, there are two basic forms of voting. These are:
1. Voting within the system for voting, and;
2. Voting to not have the voting system.

A system of voting might be a good idea in some circumstance and under some conditions and for some people. But it is bad under other conditions and for other people. Let me show you a bad one, as follow.

You are a worker. Is your body your property? Yes, it is.

You expend some of your energy in the form of work. In other words, you give your employer some of your property, and he gives you some of his property in trade - your paycheck.

You save up part of your paycheck property for years, and buy a house with it. The house is paid off; you own it; it is your property.

If you pay property taxes, you are giving some of your property to government. If you don't, a bunch of people who DID pay property taxes, have supported a government that will come and steal your house property just to get property taxes from you.

Well, was it your property or not? If you were the one who worked for it, and if you don't have a contract with someone else that they own your property, why did Government steal your property?

If you vote for your city council and mayor, you are voting for jokers who will enforce your taxation (the stealing of your property), and then use your property that they stole from you to steal the property of other people. Is this what you want? Do you really want the continued stealing of private property? Because that is really what it is.

If you want to be part of a system that builds things that use your tax money, your taxes are really donations. VOTE!

But if you are part of the group that doesn't support those things, require a pass for those people to use such things, and make them pay double for the pass. Don't steal their property from them, because they VOTED to be outside the system of voting, simply by not voting within it. Simply don't let them use the things that you and your group paid for.

Get rid of forced stealing of people's property in whatever form it exists in, 'cause that is what taxation is. And voting supports taxation.

  • Unawareness for the system.
  • Voting system is very rigid considering the geographical and cultural barriers.
  • People get discouraged by anti-social elements that are politically motivated.
  • Democracy is pretty new and hence people are not used to the idea of voting.

The British introduced common law through the jury into India. The people wouldn't accept it because of religious reasons. Democracy is simply dictatorship by the many (many people in government) rather than by one dictator. Nobody wants democracy once they realize what it is. This is why the Britts left India. They were kicked out by the Indians, because they were practicing too much democracy, and not enough common law by jury.

In what is happening in every country right now people don't have trust anymore. Befire elections those candidates have a lot of vision and misdions to fulfill once they've been elected but once they've seated to the office they've forgot everything what they've promised. Why? For the reason that they've became greedy to earn more and abuse their position and become corrupt.

Don't you think is there any government officials who are righteous and doing their job?

Some people do not vote because they think they are not right to select a leader and it is only God who chooses.
It’s mostly because they feel that there is actually no difference at all between the people are running for power and most of the time it’s true because they come out and promise a lot of things and in the end they don’t deliver nothing at all.

offcourse people realise and understand that voting is thier civic responsibility and how powerful the suppose right could be but voters like myself dont bother to come out on election day to excercise such constitutional right because at the end of the day your vote dont count, there is already a prearranged election, where by the candidate has been chosen, the election is just for eye say, then what is the essence of coming out to vote when my vote wont count?

Sometimes people think that elections are already decides before they have even started and they decide not to vote because think their vote will not change anything.
But that is completely wrong attitude, you have to fully use your right to vote and try to change the situation in your country and society for the better.

In my opinion, due to experience, people don't get to vote because they fear for their life. Some persons tend to be violent which could bear violence as such risking the lives of the innocent that came to vote.
Also some believe the election is already decided bfr the actual day of election.
No fairness...

I used to have voter's apathy and never voted because I thought to myself "My vote won't make a difference" and I think it's the reason most people don't vote.
The thing that puts me off of voting the most is not agreeing with the manifesto of the candidates / parties. I agree with some of the policies of some of them and disagree with others so for me there isn't an ideal choice.
There is also a feeling that parties lie just to get the vote (and do not stick to their pledges) and this puts a lot of people off of voting.

There are reasons why people don't vote. Some people don't know about the voting. So, they don't have any reason to try.

Other people aren't allowed to vote, because they are not a part of the group that makes up the voting process.

Still others are too lazy, or have something more important to do (they think) when the polls are open.

But, those people who know about voting AND could vote, but don't, actually DO vote when they don't vote. By not voting, they are voting to do away with the voting and/or the whole system. Their vote is against the voting process if they don't vote. I mean, you can't vote and state that voting is wrong at the same time, except if the voting question is what is being voted on.

If 100% of the people didn't vote, what would happen to the system? It would dissolve, of course. It might be immediately replaced by something else. But it would dissolve regarding the form it had been in. The question is, what's the fewest non-voters that you would have to have to get the system to dissolve? 90% of the voters? 80%?

Choosing or not choosing it depends on the confidence of our conscience in determining the best, in fact, there are several reasons why we do not choose. The first one in my opinion because I do not know the leader of the head of state, with this, makes the public do not use the right to vote. The second in my opinion because of the leader of the head of state candidate ever case, of course, we choose to find the best, honest and affection society because it uses the right to vote it depends on our hearts.

We all understand that freedom of law, freedom of speech, freedom of choice is great, but when the 4 presidential elections are held according to the written scenario - people just give up!
There can be no such thing that the President gets 80% of the votes in the elections - and in fact no one will ask-everyone hates him and voted for another!
Therefore, 40% of citizens go to the elections and nothing depends on them!

My teachers all of my school career have, believe it or not, have tried to discourage my student body to not vote. They always told us it wouldn’t matter anyway, which is so not true.
It’s called disenfranchisement, for instance it’s going on right now with the Ike victims. People are telling them they aren’t allowed to vote since they no longer have a residence, but in reality all they need to do is list their current shelter as their current residence and there’s no problem, but people are tying to tell them otherwise.

I think the main reason that people don't vote is due to their lack of interest in politics and some of them believe that whoever they vote they will end up still suffering  the same issues they are suffering even before they vote. Maybe there are also others that just don't care but most of them must have their interests regarding politics vanish because of the issues that was discovered but was never resolved due to their power and money.

I totally agree! The circus everywhere and demonstrations for the people. Who to vote for? I'm not satisfied with any candidate. There is no "against all" in my country. Anyway, the winner is the one who should and not who is actually elected by the people. I do not believe in fair elections in any country of the world

I agree that the opportunity to choose representatives of the authorities is not just a right, but a duty and a big responsibility. In my country people are very skeptical about elections. They do not believe in honest politicians, honest elections. My fellow citizens believe that all politicians are the same (lying, corrupt). Therefore, they think elections are a waste of time. They believe that their voice does not affect what is happening in the country. People are passive, because they are too often disappointed.

I think the major reason people don't vote is that they don't believe their vote can change anything. What can 1 vote change when there are millions of others? People are much more willning to vote in case of direct democracy as it is in Switzerland where the majority of issues is decided on the level of cantons (counties) and not on federal level. That way people can cleary see how their vote and attitude matters as they influence the concrete area they are living in.

Maybe they don't believe their vote actually counts for anything? Maybe they don't believe in any of their elected officials? I certainly don't. People usually vote for people based on few key things they've promised and keep harping on about, yet they ignore everything else that they're going to do whilst in office and you have absolutely no say in that. Do you get to choose whether you go to war or not? Nope. Where the tax money is spent? Nope. It's all well and good voting for people because they'll say they'll stop wars or build walls, but they usually don't even actually do the things they promised and will actually even do a load of other stuff you disagree with that they never even mentioned prior to getting elected. How is that democracy? It's like getting to choose your own executioner or you having the choice between taking a punch to the dick or face, so you vote for the lesser or two evils, but they end up doing both anyway and fucking you in the ass as well. That's not democracy to me. I think we just have the illusion of democracy, especially when you consider most politicians are corrupt and are in the pockets of whoever financed their campaigns in the first place and when they get any sort of power they need to start passing laws and giving tax breaks to their financiers because that's how it works. So that's why I don't vote. Maybe I will if the system ever changes or I actually believe in a politician but I don't that's going to happen anytime soon if ever.

Politicians are so corrupted that people do not believe anymore. We vote because we want things to change. Unfortunately, when people become powerful, that forget about the population. They first do their business and make money. The population worldwide is suffering. Politicians keep playing with them just for their vote. In this case, it is normal to see frustrated people. How can you vote when you know that it will not change a thing? It is true when you see the situation in many countries. We think that we can chance the leaders of our countries but at the end, you change nothing. The leaders might be different, but the system is the same. We should vote to change the system, not leaders.

There are certainly a lot of reasons to not vote. The political setup is most countries of the world today is really messed up. It will take a lot of time and effort to even effect a very little change. And some people might honestly have just lost faith in the whole system. They do not believe that any of the candidates or aspirants for office have anything to offer the general populace. So, what is the point in wasting your time then? Others in less developed countries even think that their votes don't count, elections are rigged anyway. Honestly, if you consider that your votes don't count or none of the candidates is time-worthy, what is the point in voting in the end?

The government in power never cares if the masses are for him or against him. And why it is like this is because the so called leaders manipulate their ways in without any form of plan of what they intend to do for the masses. They equally go there for the sake of their families. So you see them employing their relatives into different governmental positions whether they are qualified or not is not their concern. They stop at nothing but ensure they are there to embezzle money and in their own term secure the future via the embezzled funds for their children and generations after them. It is a very serious issues and no honour given to democracy in the case.

It is true that every person has their rights to vote, but they don't want to. And why is that? The reason is because they disappointed by the fake promises made by campaign leader. They feel like this is just a formality. The other reason could be they didn't really know the candidate, their profile, their vision and mission. Also the other reason could be lack of feeling that we are all one. Together we build the country, but it seems like they didn't know that.

So do you think people should be forced to vote? Surely it's also your democratic right not to vote if you don't wish to, unless you live in one of those silly countries that forces people to do so by law. If I was forced to vote I would vote for the worst possible candidate as a protest vote and that's actually what many people do when they're forced to. Why even force people to vote who have no interest in doing so? Someone with no knowledge or interest in politics obviously isn't going to make an informed choice. I think those who blindly think their democracy is a great thing and people should vote no matter what are quite naive. Often your vote really doesn't make a difference depending on the type of voting system and you end up having to choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Look at the last US election. There were people voting for Hilary Clinton who actually despised her and everything she stood for, but they believed she would be the most competent over the complete buffoon and phony that is Trump, but would she have been any better? I doubt it. In fact, she may have been much worse and I'm almost certain that she would have started more wars over her term. So yeah, if you don't want to vote then I don't think you should be telling people they should.

Probably the most significant reason why some people are not voting is that they are already sick and tired of choosing and voting when the results are just the same and no life changes all through years.  I am an expatriate, I have not voted for the passed 13 years in every elections in our country, certainly because I never had the chance to register as well and did not hesitate as well in going to our embassy to register.  I could say I have lost 13 years of my rights as a citizen of my country.  Now that I am going for good from my job abroad and decided to settle in my country, then I could get that opportunity to express my rights during every coming elections.

This is a question that required critical attention and to be critically examined, if really someone want to be objective and truthful. Though voting is the right of every eligible citizens of every country. yet, citizens were not allowed to exercise their right as a citizen and to decide who is their candid leader.

The election is marred with fraud and rigging. A times, the election is characterized with insecurity, choice of candidate imposed on the electorates which is not their choice candidate. This make it waste of time to the electorate because the winner is known already even before the election.

Why do you now think the people will vote if their vote will not count. I rest my case!

It is the only way we could tell our voice. So if you don't want to be heard then continue what you're doing. The thing is that vpting is so simple to do that I can't think why some can't still do it. Although, I cannot set aside other reasons but if that's the case then there's a problem to you as a citizen of your country.

But in most countries they should go vote, in my country this is exactly why we have driven our home town in hands of seriously fucked up people just because most did not go to vote thinking that this is useless, sadly the most non voters are young people who often thin that they are protesting this way. No this kind of protest is shooting yourself in the leg.

I observed that more often people in power don't want to peacefully step down they want to user their power to do all the bad things to retain the seat for themselves so whether I vote or not, to them it is nothing because they have strategized means of winning without my vote. If you just look at all this, it is useless voting.

In my opinion, many people simply do not understand what voting is, and that their future life in the state depends on their choice. Democracy is good, but elections are often a Fraud in countries. People probably know this and do not go to the vote, maybe they just do not care what will happen next because they think that their voice does not mean anything.
The campaign for the elections must come from the soul, one must choose a leader, and that's why he should choose him to teach his parents and surrounding, but if they don't care then why their children should go. Everything is interconnected..

To vote is never a problem in Nigeria; the issue is for those votes to count. There is always that platform for electorates to vote in candidates of their choice in any political position and huge amount of money is released in that respect by the government anytime election is approaching. Normally, prior to the election proper candidates are screened and primaries are conducted to get the most popular and qualified candidates. Practically, in the political field the exercise often does not go the way they should go. Sometimes the candidates are been selected and imposed on the people by certain group of persons hence election results are written somewhere in that candidate’s favor. In order to succeed, snatching of ballot boxes and causing violence will be the order of the day to aid their electoral malpractice. That is reason enough for people not exercise their franchise.

Let face reality when you are in election where by it is pretty obvious both candidates are brought and paid for it isnt really worth voting anyway.

Do you really think there is much difference between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump?

Both are idiots.

Joseph Stalin Quote, "It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything."

Our electronic voting machines have been hacked. It's been proven. So, why do we keep them? Why don't we go back to counting the way we used to have it, with open counting where the citizen can come and watch the counters to be sure that they aren't messing with the people.

On one hand it's true that everyone should go and vote for the candidate they desire the most to see as a leader, but on another hand not going to elections makes more sense if there is no candidate you like and i'll explain why.
I always told other people to go and just cross all the candidates out if they didn't like them so that majority of my country would be involved in elections, but then I started thinking about it. If there is no candidate you like and as you said only 50% arrived in your country, what if 90% arrived but 40% simply crossed out every candidate? It means that almost half of the population doesn't like any of the candidates, but as 90% voted there must be a winner and this winner is winning with the votes of 90% of the population, but as we know 40% just didn't want him to win. That means it's pointless to go to elections if the candidates are without doubt worse than each other and many citizens know this. The winner will still get almost the same votes unless the reason is different from not liking any of the candidates.

People don't vote the only reason behind this is the mental condition and peoples thinking for election is that what does my vote stand for or what change can my vote bring in the situation. Most peoples think what will change if I don't vote and then they get busy in their chores while ignoring the fact that not only them but thousands of peoples think this fact only and they don't vote .

Your observation gives you some false confidence that things were done right.

The only way voting can be honest is if we completely get rid of the electronic voting machines, go back to hand ballots, and have lots of observers.

Why vote when it can all be manipulated in the voting machines anyway, especially when they are connected to the Internet?

Some people are not interested or don’t care about politics while some people believe that their vote doesn’t count. The way politics is being run in some countries baffles me. In short some countries run election for formality sake; they have already selected who they want even before the election.

I want to say that everywhere there is a sufficiently high level of activity.  Here to those, by the way, reasons why people do not vote.  People do not vote, or when they are all happy, or believe that they can not influence anything.  There is a third reason.  There are people who are so dissatisfied with everything that they do not vote.  This is the third category of people, big enough, these are those who usually voted "against all" or did not vote at all.

Many people don't vote because they aren't part of what the voting process has become these days.

The problem with this thinking is that these same people most of the time don't learn private property rights, and use them against government officials who are taking their property away from them.

Private property is king. It is a right above government. Your car is your property, not you car. Your labor is your property, not your labor. You house is your property, not your house. Your minor children are your property, not your children.

Talk to government this way about all your property, and they have to keep their hands off you. If they don't, you can sue them like you would sue anybody else, and make lots of money off them.

Study it.

My teacher was begging because millions of people who can vote, don’t. Voter turnout in the United States is incredibly low compared to similar countries, notes Donald Green. He’s a political scientist at Columbia University in New York City. In fact, U.S. voter turnout ranks 31 out of 35 developed countries — nations with advanced economies and a heavy use of technology. That’s according to a Pew Research Center study released this past summer.

Nothing so I don't need to go out and wait all day to vote for nothing.".. But the truth is that if everyone pick up their asses and go together to vote for the good - then the changes will come. And also we don't forget that 70% of the choices are the wrong but saying the opposite. :)

Education  Data show that the single biggest predictor of whether someone will vote is whether they hold a college degree, Burden notes. College graduates make more money, on average. They are more likely to look for information about politics. And they are more likely to have friends who vote. People without a college degree, he says, are less likely to seek out political information. They also are less likely to have friends who care about politics or talk about voting.

Because people think that their vote doen't matter much in a larger population. Moreover in the 3rd world countries the government is decided by uneducated ones as they are easy to get bribed where the educated ones vote less for the same reason.People should come out and vote so that they atleast shouldn't blame the outcome and be a good citizen.Their are many incidents where the leaders got elected or defeated by just one vote.So individual vote matters in my opinion.

I like your point of view, and people tend to work for themselves and not for the country. Our country has a lot of people like that and only care about themselves, even myself, I choose myself, but if it's for the betterment of the country, I will choose the country. It's hard to do just because of the peers that you have, they would think of you as an outcast or someone who is puffing up to the leader. I think that's just the way the world works, and it's going to be hard to change the hierarchy.

It's not necessarily voting for the blockchain but implementing it with data transferring, contact gathering, and especially the transactions. It is to prevent corruption with the country's money. I would really support someone who would be willing to do that for the country.

Why people don't vote is because some individual simply believe that they did not understand enough about the government, the election process or individual party policies to vote
People have rather come to the realization that irrespective of who comes to power, nothing is going to change and that the politicians are going to say anything to win power and not not fulfil any of their promises.

I think that most people don't vote because they don't trust their politicians. Why is it necessary to go out and vote if they don't have an appropriate choice?

I think that could be reflected even more so if we could all have the opportunity to vote from home, digitally..or via text message, facebook etc..

I pretty much bet either due to apathy or a distrust for the the elected candidates the overall voting turn out would be the same..

What system are you thinking about of, when you want to change it? I think it would be hard starting from scratch or either changing but it's not bad to think about it and it needs many actions to proceed. You cannot blame the millennials if they themselves do not care so much about political stuff, it's just that they didn't care enough because they were ignored by in the first place. Probably some people in the government think of millennials as stupid, that's why they don't care about it. I don't know, hopefully, everything would work out great.

It isn't a bad idea to do that and implementing blockchain technology along with those kinds of things, voting, etc, it would be as easy as it gets. People just need to be there personally because they need to verify that it is you and you are alive or something like that.

Two parties may not be enough  The United States has two main political parties: Republicans and Democrats. Other political parties exist, such as the Green party and the Libertarians. Few people, however, vote for candidates of those “other” parties. This is because U.S. elections only reward what is known as “first past the post.” The one who gets the most votes wins.

Modern democracy is simply a manipulative illusion. It pursues only one goal - to shift the responsibility for the decisions of politicians onto the shoulders of voters. Once we have chosen them, it means that we are to blame for what is happening in the country.
The illusion of influence. Like a child behind the wheel of a toy car, which the father controls with the help of a remote control. There is a rudder, but control is illusory.
Democracy is just a transitional stage.
The best system would be elections with the help of competent people. It is strange to think that at 18, a pizzeria courier is as competent as a university professor at 50 to choose.
But we too recently came to the concept of equality. And such radical ideas are too painful for society. And the effectiveness of this approach is certainly not proven.

There is a feeling that the winner of the election has long been determined, but not by us .. Maybe I’m wrong, but I heard such opinions from residents of other countries.

I would have to agree..I think people also see voting a lot like choosing between lesser evils.

Also, despite the winner of an election, it is still supply and demand that decides most political decisions. Every country is fighting for its piece of the world's pie, unless it  has a significant amount of valuable resources.

This is why there is no "better" politician and we are slowly being given the liberty to opt out of a country's system thanks to things like the internet.

The main reason why I stopped voting was lack of parties that represent my values. I mean there are libertarian parties and I used to vote for them, but they don't stand a chance. They are always below 5% and this has been going on for decades.
For some reason people like to be ruled, they like when others are making the decisions for them, and when they're given a false sense of security and a false sense of freedom. There are usually 2 major political parties (depending on a country) that share the power. When people get fed up with one they choose the other one, not knowing that they both are almost one and the same thing.

I think the current approach to voting has simply outlived itself. There is no precisely that confidence, which, in essence, should be in the hands of the people and the authorities.I think the best option for a real vote would be to use blockchain technology.(this is the technical side of voting). The second question is that there are simply no worthy candidates.Even with the use of new technologies, the lack of personnel causes apathy among voters.I don't want to talk about all countries.I'm talking about the country where I live. Here we have such a trend.

We recently had elections in my home country (the U.S.)

My current protocol is to vote in local county elections and (for now) in state-wide elections, but I will no longer vote in federal elections.  My feeling is that voting is part of a 'manufactured consent' psychological operation.  Having only a choice between two shitty candidates who are both selected by the ruling oligarchy is a sham.  I feel that by specifically NOT participating in the sham I am not giving my consent to be governed and not lending my support to the charade.

At this point I feel that the states and the people would be better off to dissolve the union and either start over again or govern themselves as autonomous sovereign units.  Equally important, the rest of the world would be MUCH better off if the union (the _United_ States) were dissolved.  Should this come to pass I hope it would happen peacefully and via the wishes of the super-majority of the people, but it is very unlikely to play out that way :(  Probably the only way it will happen is under a 'conspiracy' engineered as a stepping-stone to consolidate the entire planet into a single governed entity.  That is to say, the so-called 'New World Order' that so many of 'our' so-called leaders cannot stop talking about.

Currently I would still give a state-sized unit some hope even though my state went very much backward in the most recent election and I don't see much hope that it will turn around and start moving forward again due to simple demographic trends and considerations.  At the county level I feel that things do operate fairly well, and I don't live in an incorporated area (e.g., a city.)

Not many people are interested in politics.
Most people don`t look beyond their plates. They are more concerned about their domestic affairs, their own mutual relations with other people and elementary comfort. That's all.
Politics is quite difficult, you need to understand it, spend time on it. And by the way have at least an average level of education.
It is necessary to accept that most people are just not interested in politics, they have better things to do.

Yes, some people lose their interest in voting because of the bad system that was happening now, we all know that every candidate now are doing their best to get the vote of the people, to the point that they do vote buying. Some people choose more to not vote because they see that it is nonsenss since some are doing bad things just to get the vote of the people. I think most people who don't vote don't do it because they don't want to choose between 2 or more group of assholes who want to get their money from taxes. I think they don't want to choose between bad and bad so they don't vote because their choose would be a bad choose. I might be wrong

Hillary Clinton got more votes than Donald Trump and she still lost. Because U.S is not a democracy per se it is an Empire were a few have more power than many to decide the fate of the nation and their rulers

The U.S. is an 'empire', or at least an important part of someone's empire (for now), but that has nothing to do with the rules of our electoral system.  This is primarily a result of our being, technically, 'constitutional republic'.

Representatives democracies are supposed to work, and people are supposed to depend on them. In reality, they're kinda shit at representing the people when people are apathetic.

I think they don't believe in their ability to influence any decision and election. It could be a silent way of protesting against the current political system, or it could simply be laziness.
