Title: Freshmarket.co.in compromised and closing
Post by: def_ender on February 05, 2014, 09:06:00 AM
Hello.
I have really bad news for you - our base, as i see, was partly compromised and leaked to unknown hacker. Today i received a message from him, and threat that all our money will be withdrawn if we wouldn't pay him 10 BTC. Even though we stored user passwords as hashes, some of them was decrypted and used to steal people's money. We temporarily closed (or closed forever?) to think what we can do to refund our customers money, at least partially. We have lost ~40% of LTC, LEAF and part of NYANcoin amount. Sometimes i like the idea when no other exchange accept any money we trade...
Thank you, hacker. You just killed one of the part of cryptoworld bright future.

I don't think this will happen.
Even if we rework all our site, solve all possible security issues - people's trust is lost, as i think. This makes me so sad.
Just now we are trying to find any fund we can - even takin my/devteam funds - to atleast partially refund losses.

Thanks for luck, we will need it.

Hm, maybe it was mistake. Some of them was DEcrypted by hacker. If you know hashed password, within 5-20 hours you can decrypt it into unencrypted one.

Why would someone ask a 10 BTC ransom to release coins worth... more than 10 BTC? Doesn't sound like good hacker logic unless he's just trying to get another 10 BTC on top of everything of course.

Yes, that was my idea too, and that's why whe closed and doesn't paid anything to hacker.

Where is the proof that you didn't steal your customers money and blame it on a hacker? It seems like a perfect scenario for you.

I had some VTC and BTC funds at your market, is it possible to get a refund? It is a large sum for me (>0.5 btc).
It's impossible. We don't have neither VTC nor BTC on our market. Go troll somewhere else.
Where is the proof that you didn't steal your customers money and blame it on a hacker? It seems like a perfect scenario for you.
Wow, thanks for trust. I have support ticket with threats and we'll look for ip adresses of this.
Also, we had one TTC incident and could easily steal 19M of TTC (worth nearly 300 ltc) without any problem. But they now lay at their owner's account.
Bad news.

TTC is safe, but i can't withdraw anything without mail confirmation. We'll write down everything in our thread as soon as possible.

Yes, it's really fail.
But we are not leaving with any cash - we are going to refund as much as we can, even from our own money.

def ender, i hgihly suggest you refund all the money. you also lied, the password hashes weren't decrypted. they are hashed with SHA512, which is a one way hashing function that can't be decrypted.

Watching the US Senate discussions about what part of Bitcoin SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be regulated...  I think this is perfect example of why Exchanges should be regulated. Also POOLS should be too.

This type of thing occurs too often, and who is left losing everything... the customers.

ANYONE can setup an exchange, you have no idea if their system is secure, or if they are scammer, or if they even know how to use a computer!
At every 2nd coin launch, i see a scammer Pool setup.  pretend to have problems... then steal 1-2 days worth of mine.

Who protects the user?
Who regulates this shit?

The community should.. but they dont... the community is too full of Pump and Dumpers...

It has become a community similar to any online game, or even 4Chan... where you have  Trolls, Scammers, Spammers, Noobs, and the fuckwit elites who think NOOBS DESERVE TO BE SCAMMED!!

Crypto community is fast becoming a group of people who are just there to pump, dump and laugh at anyone that is new.

Still do mate...

Just waiting for you to get better and upgrade that baby!

You have been honest and open the whole time, But even you had security problems.

Regulation is needed not only for Customer Safety, but also to help provide new exchanges with tools and methods to secure their site correctly.
Regulation is not just rules, it is support too.

P.S.  I have never lost a coin from either   OPENEX.PW  or  FRESHMARKETCO.IN     maybe luck?

Hm, maybe it was mistake. Some of them was DEcrypted by hacker. If you know hashed password, within 5-20 hours you can decrypt it into unencrypted one.

This is complete BS.

md5 passwords, if used in a right way, take years to decrypt.

Of course a password like 12345 can be decrypted in matter of seconds using rainbow tablets, but if this is the case, then it's a slap in the face for your to allow such passwords

OK lets say this is true..  Let me understand this.

You received a message form a hacker claiming he has hacked site and got passwords.  He has taken coins from a few accounts and asked you for 10 btw or you will loose rest.

HUMMM..  OK

Firstly why didn't the hacker just take everything and make more?  Hackers who steal are not nice people that will just say,..  ok just give me a little and ill leave you rest.

SO think for a second..  He claims to have decrypted hashed passwords ( I DONT THINK SO )

Is it not more likely someone has created 10 + accounts..  Deposited coins to all accounts..  Empited all those accounts and then pretended to be a hacker and blackmail you for btw?

How can i QUICKLY RETURN coins to people, if part of the IS LOST? Devs decided to stop engine to prevent further losses and refund everything manually. Was it a mistake? What should be a better way?

Seriously, i don't even know how we have been hacked. The man who did it showed up in our thread, said smth like 'i have stolen onle 250,you are scammers, i couldnt steal more than 300 cuz you doesn't had it on wallet' and dissapeared. He haven't shown how he did it, and i don't see any good auths in SSH/any shit that could help me understand.

Proof of hack please.

As mentioned emails with full headers.
Any server logs showing pertinent information to share with community so others can harden their exchanges.
Relevant blockchain entries.

The passwords could well have been brute forced the easy ones first. Most probably bluffing about taking monies as if I had access to all accounts I would empty all. Which will probably happen anyway given enough time to brute force passwords.

If genuine Im gutted fir you...

Because we don't store everything in one wallet. We had ~300 ltc on our exchange wallet, and had ~1000 on our cryptsy wallet (cuz it's obvously more safe than our exchange).

Just now i know one adress to which was withdrawn 0.4 and 0.8 ltc (we blocked it and in a few time there were support ticket 'why so long to withdraw' and after this - DONT WITHDRAW THIS IT IS NOT MY WALLET STOP IT). gradual leak of coin during time = account brute forced consecutively . no ?
Users have to knwow if they are concerned.

Is this really the dev of the site?

Site has been up every time I have logged into it.

No mention of the hack on their tweet either.

We need to get some exchanges for new coins that are stable and secure like cryptsy and coinedup. Or have them speed up the process of adding new coins.

Edit: also there isn't even a single mention about this in coinmarket.io 's thread.

Even if we rework all our site, solve all possible security issues - people's trust is lost, as i think. This makes me so sad.
Just now we are trying to find any fund we can - even takin my/devteam funds - to atleast partially refund losses.

You can either decrypt the pass with a click of a button or cant do it at all.

We need to get some exchanges for new coins that are stable and secure like cryptsy and coinedup. Or have them speed up the process of adding new coins.
No, i'm not the dev, i'm the support guy. And it's freshmarket, not coinmarket.io
Just now we are trying to recover what adresses was used to steal, and what - for fair withdraws. We have found one adress, to which 200 LTC gone, and second one where ~1.2 ltc, and investigating more.
sent def-ender pm for refund.

hope i get it...
Please watch op-post of our thread.

You can either decrypt the pass with a click of a button or cant do it at all.
Hashes today are not a way to encrypt a password. not 1 hash anyway...
They probably did a md5/Sha1 with no salt and no rehashing - Idiots.
It was SHA-512 with individual salt.

Are you ready for the most amazing story? We were victims of a hack two days ago as well, the person who sold us our gaming sites stole all of the coins held in our games and made off with the 20 million in total from our tittiecoind server and wallet that was held for growing our community. He then blamed his partner who is now supposedly he's X-partner.

We immediately got our team together and started investigating, our investigations led us to a sell order on Fresh Markets for 19 million, this was obviously our coins as the sell order was placed round about the same time as the hack. We then contacted Fresh Markets who were very quick to act and froze the account and suspended trading. Fresh markets worked with us and contacted the trader who explained that he bought the TittieCoin form someone in CEX.io chat. We contacted CEX.io who also "amazingly" jumped right into the deep end to help us and requested a support ticket for their records. We Got CEX.io and Fresh Market in a group chat over Skype along with the the fresh market account holder who submitted the 19 million trade offer, our Founder as well as our two Co-Founders and main Contributors for TittieCoin.

After a long back and forth CEX.io requested a transaction ID from the suspect who was not willing to cooperate any further and stopped responding to our investigation questioning! Fresh Market gave the suspect 24 hrs to respond however the suspect seemed to have been scared off by the amazing team effort put in by CEX.io, Fresh Market and the TittieCoin team! We have since been refunded our 20 million and would like to extend mountains of gratitude to CEX.io and Fresh Markets for helping TittieCoin and it's community get back on track! I do not believe Fresh markets would jeopardize there business for such short term gain. We hope you get back on track Fresh Market and the TittieCoin team are here for you if you need anything!

Much LOVE!

The hacker is either a psychic triple handed ninja king or you didn't protect the passwords.
One of them sounds better - but the other one is the logical choice.

Yep, that was true. As i said, if i wanted to steal something - would steal 20m ttc and go away.
Or just steal all exchange balances and go away.

Its a shame really.

I used to trade there and I hope I can get my coins back.

Def, bounce back strongly rather than shutting it down completely.
Even we will bounce back, it wouldn't happen in next few weeks.
I don't know what i'm gonna do now, but if devs will try to recover exchange, i want them to completely rewrite it.

So I lost over 50 LTC???? :(

Are the refunds being automated?

Nope. Manually rechecking everyone's balance.
It's hard, it's slow, but it's safier.

The whole point of cryptocurrency is that it's not regulated, centralized etc. If it was it'd just be the same as general currency. If you don't like it don't take part in it. Go trade on the stock market.

You just killed one of the part of cryptoworld bright future.

it happened before openex.pw one hacker handled their site. It's time to learn and take lesson.

The game is rough, hacks and scams happens over and over again all the time and if You donīt want to loose Your coins, send them somewhere, where You can expect at least some security. If You donīt care about security, let it go. THIS IS NOT A BANK, NOR FOREX!

I second this, im rather new to the crypto and the first thing i learned is staying as safe as possible! How can i leave my 50+ ltc on a new, very basic exchange? And that over quiet a time i guess. While i see other exchanges being hacked, online wallets that claim they're safe getting compromised. Pools and single coin holder's being hacked. Scammers waiting to get their coins from the next person. Phishing sites being spread on various chats.

Its no where new information that new websites leak security. However to everyone claiming freshmarket devs being the scam, please stop those hasty scam calls. Not that you probably shoot yourself in the leg the next time but accusing somebody just because "it would be a good scenario" for the dev team is just fucked up. Wait until refunds get paid or Log, IP is made public. Then decide wether you got scammed by the devs or not. But those hasty calls help NOBODY.

Thanks for good words. As you can see in our thread, people are getting their refunds just now. I think it will require at least 1 day to pay everyone.
At this moment, 175 refunds processed, 226 to go.

Even if we rework all our site, solve all possible security issues - people's trust is lost, as i think. This makes me so sad.
I personally DON'T think so, i don't trust anyone which was never hacked.

BUT i gain trust in a party which got hacked and handles that problem well.
For that you need an good and honest communication with your customers and a good security team which fixes the leak.

After then, i will have more trust in you than before because you KNOW now what it means to be hacked and what it needs to manage that threat!

I personally only had round about ~450 Potcoins at your Exchange and i am not sad about losing them, i were more sad if we all lose a exchange with an motivated admin!

So don't be demotivated by this, if you manage this good you will gain strenght from it!

I really donīt get it - how can anyone leave bigger amount of coins on exchange, which (honestly) look like middle school project?

Thanks for your reassurance.
Just now our #1 priority is to refund everything we can to everyone who had balance on our exchange. After it we will have a talk with dev team, and if they want to continue, we'll close for big recoding. But it's not clear now, so i can't give any promises.
UPD: 183 refunded, 220 to go. As soon as it hits ~200 or some more , i think, dev will go for a little break and sleep.

As a miner I agree that you should not keep your money at any exchange, gotta withdraw em as fast as possible
But if some1 is an exchange gambler who buys/sells coins all day his coins balances are his tools. He can't withdraw his whole balance, coz if he would there will be nothing to gamble with. I beleave these exchange gamblers are in fact main buyers of coins that we mine. If not for them mining would not be profitable coz coins don't cost shit without a gambling opportunity.

Exactly - You can rise stronger or die from hack - there were only few of them who survive, HashCows for example - pure example how hack ressurection should look like, even that they are quite paranoid now (or lazy IMHO). Anyway, THIS IS NOT CHILDS PLAYGROUND - If You canīt afford to loose some coins, You should go somewhere else. I myself get burned several times, but most of the time it was just little amount of coins (with possible great income, which on the other hand came several times), wasted namely in scams like UNOCS, eCrypto, PhenixEx, OrbitCoin etc.. You have to get burn to realize what is wrong and whoom to trust, or when to leave sinking ship (TeslaCoin recently)

And thats right what Youīre talking about - gambling. If You leave hardly acquired coins on some badly secured place, Youīre gambling hardly. There is always possibility to withdraw part of Your ballance to Yours private encrypted wallet in no time. Youīll never play with Your whole existence, donīt You?

Why the hell haven't I thought of this?  I could be rich.....

Oh yeah, because I'm not a slimy little prick.

Yes, i think he is.
I don't think this could help anyone to hack our exchange again. Now we are operating at localhost, and you need to email from your own adress you used to refund. But it can affect users on other exchanges. Please, if you were using same passwords, change them.

You have to email to support@freshmarket.co.in with:
your account name
what money and how much you had
adresses for withdrawal for all money.
And wait.
Thanks.

As i see in mail, you haven' provided any wallet other than LTC.
So, if you don't want to refund any other currencies - send an email, and processing dev will only send LTC.
