Title: [ANNOUNCE] RuCoin - Russian alternate cryptocurrency - exchange is up already!
Post by: MaGNeT on October 16, 2011, 08:25:36 PM
I found this:

https://www.rucoin.org

https://btc-e.com/exchange/ruc_btc

Anyone with more info? :)

There is an exchange already... I'll mine them as long as difficulty is low and source is open ;D

I guess there won't be a bounty for the logo:

Title: Re: RuCoin - new Russian cryptocurrency?
Post by: MaGNeT on October 16, 2011, 08:34:24 PM
I "translated"  the info on the rucoin.org site:

Quote
What is this crap, RuCoin?

This is not (yet) project p2p-kriptovalyuty almost completely analogous BitCoin
For what it is, this new kriptovalyuta RuCoin?

RuCoin a substitute BitCoin, but the goal is not the case. Purpose - to provide redundancy for the system BitCoin, increase the stability of smeystva kriptovalyut, which will undoubtedly grow and develop.
Why reserve BitCoin?

Peer kriptovalyuty for someone as a "thorn in the side." It is difficult to anticipate all the nasty things that can come up with attackers to cause some harm to the independent system. And this unknown, but potentially possible threat - scary, it calls into question the confidence in the system. It will be safer if the system bude to have some redundancy, for example, a parallel system that performs the same functions, but not on performance of the prototype and other crypto-currency.
How will the reservation?

To take advantage of redundancy should be using any existing exchange or currency exchange office to change a portion of their funds in addition to RuCoin course, which will be alive at the time of exchange. Of course, in the future will change course, and a reverse exchange value of the coins will be acquired either increase or decrease, depending on market movements. You can play on the difference in rates - rates as kriptovalyut is still relatively easy to predict, more or less understand all this is possible without great labor increase your savings. But the thing that you can get from investing in the reserve kriptovalyutu - extra insurance in case of any problems with BitCoin.
What extra buns promises RuCoin?

Since RuCoin starts with a lag of BitCoin more than two years, there is some interesting nuances:
First, it is mining. Many envy those who are at a very early stage of development BitCoin engaged in mining - that is downloaded your computing power generation of coins when the complexity was very low. Now their fairy coins increased in price. Something like that probably awaits the first to believe in a new backup kriptovalyutu and connect to its mining their computing power.
Second, since RuCoin comes in the wake of BitCoin, then knowing the history of BitCoin be highly likely to predict what awaits RuCoin. What imeeno benefits it gives - anyone can come up with your own.
Already there are many new "under-rates" ...

A number of projects that are based on ideas and code BitCoin. Typically, these projects were implemented under the banner of "catch up and overtake Bitcoin", so the upstream developer changed the algorithm of the system according to their ideas about how we can all be improved. RuCoin project is not intended that any develop and improve, and vice versa, is the most conservative position in order to maintain and use all that has been proven in Bitcoin.
Why this name RuCoin?

What's the difference what the name of the crypto-currency? This is a matter of taste. But generally the name RuCoin born spontaneously among Russian-speaking developers who conceived this project to implement. Of course, this has nothing to do with either rubles or rupees, or with geography.

There are already buy orders at 0.1 BTC per RUC and the chain hasn't even started yet. The exchange claims to be partners with the chain. Maybe it's the same people. Would be easy to insert fake buy and sell orders to promote the chain. "Oh look, people are buying this stuff like crazy! I should start mining it or buy them with all my BTC!"

This is foolish. What they want is a Russian language BitCoin client not a whole new chain.

I'm guessing there is a huge premine on this.

I have sources and 64 bit linux build, but non-disclosure agreement with developers doesn't allow me redistribute it without permission... So, just wait.  ::)

There is mining pool for subject:

BXE, your Google translated Russian is an abomination.  I had to read that like 10 times before I could guess the intended message.

Well it certainly isn't muc of "No Pre-mine" if you set it up and mine for a week before allowing the public to see it.

Just another pre-mined alt coin, no biggie.
Hm... What's the problem with pooled mining? Users mining on pool, and found thousands of blocks. Not developers of "just another premined alt coin". Just usual mortal users )

P.S. I'm not a developer of subject, I don't like all forks... For some my own reasons, of course.

P.P.S. Don't use google translate, if you want to be understood. :) "Translated" text is much difficult to understand by the ordinary russian user, in comparision with the original English text. In fact, these translations are often meaningless. The reason is synthetic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_language) nature of russian language, which is very difficult for machine-implementation. ::)

Bah.  Can't connect to that port from the US.  Web site is no problem, telnet to 8844 hangs forever.  Looks like it's a pretty exclusive club for now.

EDIT: must have been just DDoS protection, in and mining now.  Not bad, already on block 6000, 300k coins distributed.  Not an early adopter, but nothing like tenebrix or SC.  Gonna chance it, since my GPU miners are idle anyway.

It's 0:30 here, time to go to bed. I set it up with some back-up pools in cgminer, so I don't lose GPU time :)

This chain not having a premine is excellent news.

Is there anything unusual about this coin or is it just BitCoin with a different genesis block?

Just bitcoin with another block chain. There is only one difference - retargeting of difficulty every 1008 block, not 2016.

The project ideology completely opposite to solidcoin and other solidcoin-like clones... I can formulate this as "do not overtake and surpass bitcoin, just use best from it".

How often does the earnings page refresh on the pool?  I've been at it for a while now (#20 producer!) and still read as 0.0000000 rewards.

I'm sorry for that, but now we have some stability problems because of botnet-miner network activity. I've banned account, but bots still trying connect to pool and produces high load on pushpool.

LongPoll support is disabled temporarily to improve stability. Problem will be solved as soon as possible.

I assume, that stability problems will be fixed today, thanks to JoelKatz for new multithreaded RPC patch with bitcoin 0.4 support. Now it's in beta stage, but works great.

Source been released, or do we now need to trust the Russians and CoinHunter?
I trust them. Because I've checked the source code using the diff -r -u, before installing it on my pool. No serious differences were found in comparision with original bitcoin. Diff has size around 62kb and contains redefinitions of messages text ("bitcoin" ==> "rucoin" replaced) and some other like this. It's just bitcoin with another genesis block.

You can say, that you can't trust me (because I'm russian), but seriously, I don't care. It's time to grow up already, isn't it? Please use a more serious arguments. I do not think about your nationality, and I expect the same from you. ;)

And the finally, some words about CoinHunter... I don't create virtuals by cloning myself, and don't claim that my software is better than anything in the world, like he did.

P.S. I'll ask developers about sources redistribution today.

P.P.S. I apologize for the mistakes that could happen. I haven't practiced in English about three years. Also, I'm sorry if someone hurt because of this speech. Nothing personal. :)

Pool software restarted, "longpoll.disable" flag now is set to false... Let's see the stability.

// EDIT: I forgot to start the blkmond, which is why everything was fallen. That's fixed.
// EDIT2: Restarting workers to minimize stale shares count is recommended. Long poll support will not visible by miners like phoenix, until it will not restarted.

See previous page, I published link to my linux-amd64 build of rucoind. Or you can use windows client from official site (they isn't opened yet, but some links work):

But I think, that current difficulty isn't easy for solo.

Switched to poolserverj, because pushpoold makes me too crazy.

Tweaks in process.

//EDIT 12:09 AM: PoolserverJ configuration completed. So I'm hopefully, that now I can go to bed as a normal human.  ;D

PoolserverJ converts worker names to lower case, which was the reason of some problems for users, who used names like "Abc_0". They couldn't connect to pool and received error "http/403 forbidden". Now I converted all worker names in database to lower case. ::)

// EDIT 02:05 AM: LP connections count is limited to 10 connections per worker, because of botnet activity. Too many opened LP connections causes pool daemon instability.

Are you the one running rucoin.itzod.ru ?

I am confused with the payout system, I have ~150 rucoins in rewards however that takes forever to clear and since I stopped mining I have only 10 rucoins cleared for withdrawal even though all the blocks I mined on allready confirmed.

At this rate I would only receive my earned coins in 2-3weeks ?

I guess it's just like almost every other coin: a block needs about 120 confirmations for safety reasons.

Reward system is SMPPS (Shared Maximum Pay Per Share, like eligius.st or arsbitcoin.com). We had extreme unluck at start up (around 450%, that's awful), so payout buffer is empty now and payments are small. But you will receive your rewards in full amount, just wait. ;) Each confirmed block adds 50 coins to buffer, buffer divides between users, and as a result, you have many small payments.

Title: Please, do not relate rucoin to Russia and Russians.

First of all, here is human translation from http://rucoin.org/ root page.

I will only translate the most important, you to make your own conclusions.
  • Quote
    И в чём жe cпeцификa Rucoin ?
Ecли кopoткo - бoлee cтaбильный кypc.
    translates to:
    Quote
What is the specifics of the Rucoin?
In short - more stable course
I mean it, rucoin is officially positioned as a currency with a stable exchange rate. Read further to know HOW.
  • Quote
Tpyднo гoвopить o cтaбильнocти, кoгдa cиcтeмa нaxoдитcя нa ocтpиe бopьбы интepecoв, кoгдa ecть нeмaлo жeлaющиx этy cиcтeмy yничтoжить, нo ecть нeмaлo и тex, ктo жeлaют этy cиcтeмy paзвивaть и yкpeплять. Пocтoяннaя oжecтoчeннaя бopьбa интepecoв вызывaeт нecтaбильнocть кypca, чтo coздaёт pяд нeyдoбcтв для пpaктичecкoгo пpимeнeния тaкoй вaлюты.
    Дpyгoe дeлo - Rucoin.
Этoт пpoeкт poдилcя нe нa пoляx cpaжeний. B ocнoвe Rucoin - гoтoвыe, пpoвepeнныe peшeния и нaкoплeнный oпыт. Bcё тo лyчшee, чтo былo paзpaбoтaнo для Bitcoin, лeгкo мoжнo пpимeнить и для Rucoin.
is in short (text is comparing Rucoin to Bitcoin):
    Quote
It is difficult to talk about stability when the system is at the forefront of the struggle of interests.
Constant fierce struggle of interests causes course instability, which creates a number of disadvantages for practical use of such currency.
    Another thing - Rucoin.
This project was not born on the battlefields. At the heart of Rucoin - ready, proven solutions and lessons learned.
Please, pay your attention to the wording "ready, proven solutions and lessons learned". Nothing I can add to this. Nothing.
  • And the most important (i think):
    Quote
Кoнцeптyaльнo, Rucoin - этo тaкoй cлoй cтaбильнocти и гapaнтий, кoгдa вмecтo cлeпыx нaдeжд нa "Heвидимyю pyкy pынкa", иcпoльзyютcя пpинципы cтpoгoгo вaлютнoгo peгyлиpoвaния. Rucoin, в oтличиe oт Bitcoin, coвepшeннo нe гoдитcя для вaлютныx cпeкyлянтoв, нo зaтo oчeнь пoдxoдит для coxpaнeния cбepeжeний и для oбecпeчeния cтaбильнoй и нaдeжнoй инфpacтpyктypы плaтёжныx cиcтeм нoвoгo пoкoлeния.

Кpoмe тoгo, Rucoin пo oтнoшeнию к Bitcoin впoлнe мoжeт выcтyпaть кaк peзepвнaя кpиптo-вaлютa, в кoтopyю мoжнo пepeвecти чacть cpeдcтв для cтpaxoвки oт вcякoгo poдa нeoжидaннocтeй.
    is translated as (roughly)
    Quote
Conceptually, Rucoin - this is a layer of stability and security, when, instead of blind hope for "the invisible hand of market" principles are used strict currency regulations. Instead, to give the exchange rate at the games speculators, who for the sake of their earnings will generate most unpredictable chatter in the system, Rucoin provides some tools functionally similar to central bank and the stabilization fund, whose main task - to make the course of crypto-currency stable, predictable and guaranteed .

Rucoin, unlike Bitcoin, totally unsuitable for currency speculators, but it is very suitable for the conservation and savings to ensure a stable and reliable infrastructure of payment systems new generation.

In addition, Rucoin towards Bitcoin may well serve as a reserve currency, into which can be converted part of the funds for the insurance of all kinds of surprises.
I swear, that  "the invisible hand of market principles", "currency regulations", "central bank" and "stabilization fund" is not a translation error or misinterpretation of russian text, though russian is not my native language, you should read that words exactly, Rucoin proponents are going to implement strict currency regulations, stabilization fund, central bank. I mean it, YES, they did officially tell so to the public!

And please, don't miss this explicitly expressed idea: Rucoin towards Bitcoin may well serve as a reserve currency, into which can be converted part of the funds for the insurance of all kinds of surprises.
Please, get me right, don't get me wrong. I have a lot of russian friends, most of them don't know the word 'scam' at all, I'm the most educated at that topic amongst them I'm afraid.

Still, you to make conclusions. But please, do not relate Rucoin to Russia, that is completely wrong and unfair to Russia.

It is not a Russian Bitcoin (it would be senseless), it is just another Bitcoin fork perverted for yet unknown private goals of it's creators.
Explicitely stated goals include voluntary currency price regulation by the means of central bank using some funds.
You to conclude the rest about the funds, since nothing is stated about them oficially.

In other words, project of RuCoin infrastructure is the combination of "new" and "classic" economic principles. I do not know what will happen with it in future, but the ideas of the project are reasonable.

Translation is good enough, but I need to do some comments.

Quote
It is not a Russian Bitcoin (it would be senseless), it is just another Bitcoin fork perverted for yet unknown private goals of it's creators.
In fact, this is an attempt to start all again, not allowing possession of extreme large sums of those by the persons, who will use them to bring down the market.

P.S. There is a project "encoin", pursuing similar targets.

I wonder how the "course stabilization" would be implemented. You'd need to put in a lot of them "paper money" into the "RUCoin monetary authority" for it to be able to do proper monetary interventions and quench panicsells.

Well, having an "authority" with lots of coins is quite plausible, so quenching bubbles isn't an issue.

Having an "authority" with enough money to quench a modest panicsell seems implausible unless someone is throwing huge wads of raw cash at the project.

I am profoundly fascinated and intrigued

I see two variants:
 1. One is going to get profits out of manipulating the exchange rate. It means out of participants of exchange.
 2. One does not care about the USD amounts he is willing to throw out. Maybe because he is the FED and prints USD.

Neither makes any trust for me.

rucoin.itzod.ru SMPPS must be broken or something isnt right.

Its been 48hrs now and countless blocks since I last mined there and yet still only 16RUC out of my 120RUC have cleared from the buffer.

This is quote absurd, at this rate I estimate it would take me a month to have access to my mined coins? How is this at all feasable?

Title: Re: [ANNOUNCE] RuCoin - Russian alternate cryptocurrency - exchange is up already!
Post by: Balthazar on October 21, 2011, 03:10:47 PM
It's not broken, current situation is just a result of extreme unluck on startup. At the moment, each new block proportionally divides between users, which have unpaid rewards. Rewards calculated by using this formula:

Reward = 50 * Shares / Difficulty;

I agree that it can be annoying, but we are honest. ::) If you in doubt, you can view this Excel table, file created at morning (GMT+4, 10:00 AM):

http://zalil.ru/31909799

Or examine our statistics and buffer history pages.

Im sure you are honest, its just even with honest setup the current payout method is just not working out. Sure the early badluck is likely the cause but at this rate using SMPPS is causing alot of headache for people atleast wanting payouts within 24hrs after earning it.

Even your 2000RUC buffer only added another 5RUC from my pending 120RUC in the last 24hrs ? This is quite sick :/

System works as designed, just
Quote
select sum(user_reward - user_payed_reward) from user_rewards;

sum
71825.420015135
1 record

Query time: 3.173 ms
we have 71825.420015135 RUC of delayed rewards.  This is the result of a low difficulty at the beginning.

Quote from: Balthazar
At the moment, each new block proportionally divides between users, which have unpaid rewards.

I don't know what else do I need to say. Users asks this questions every day, about 10-15 times. And every question is identical to previous.
What shall I do, cancel the rewards of old users, or what? And what I'll tell them after that? Try to think about this situation before asking obvious questions.

The payment algorithm in simple notation:

Quote
if current_rewards_sum_for_all_users - paid_sum_for_all_users > sum_in_the_payment_buffer
   k = sum_in_the_payment_buffer / (current_rewards_sum_for_all_users - paid_sum_for_all_users )
else
   k = 1
end if

If k > 0.001, then
Loop until there is the users with delayed payments, and we have money in the payment buffer:
payment_volume = (user_current_rewards - user_payed) * k
user_balance = user_balance + payment_volume
sum_in_the_payment_buffer = sum_in_the_payment_buffer - payment_volume
End loop
End if
Are there any questions? ::)

Do you have Linux 64 client or source?
Here is updated linux amd64 client:

http://rucoin.itzod.ru/rucoin-linux-amd64.tar.bz2

If someone uses previous build, I recommend to update it, because block chain rules will be changed since block #8600. Updated client for windows coming soon.

P.S. Merged mining with namecoind (rucoind as master) also coming soon.

Users of exchange call him "Кaмaзиcт" or "Maшиниcт бpoнeпoeздa" (which mean "trucker" and "armored train driver" accordingly) because of volume of his orders.

Possible issues:

  • Binaries are incompatible with old database files, so all files from "appdata\roaming\rucoin" should be deleted (except for wallet.dat or config file, of course).
  • If client can't find other nodes, try use it with -irc0 command line key.

Installer coming soon...

As promised earlier, the new build of rucoind for linux-amd64 with merged mining support. Only parent mode implemented yet. So you can mine rucoins and namecoins at the same time, by using this build of rucoind + modified by vinced version of namecoind (https://github.com/vinced/namecoin) behind merged-mine-proxy.

Any tests or reports are welcome. If you have questions about merged mining set up, you can ask me here or in PM.

Hello. You can see difficulty and current block count on the http://rucoin.itzod.ru/ main page. Total hashrate can be approximately evaluated by calculation number of network blocks per hour/day. Good idea, i will think about it.

Current network hashrate is approximately 80-100GH/s. Very little network at the moment. :)

So, I've started some experiments with rewards system today. Now, the pool pays you for every share an additional 10%. The 10% of each accepted share price is charged in real time and do not appear in the statistics. They also do not affect the payment of rewards for blocks.

The "10%" selected just to see how the system works. The increase of additional payments is planned for the nearest future.

I'm not affiliated with rucoin project. You can ask this question to rucoin developer and project leader, alexsmf (alex@rucoin.org). I can answer only questions about my pool, or some technical questions, such as questions about setting up your own pool or questions about network. For example, I can say you, that there is no pre-mined coins. It is unlikely that users of solidcoin can say the same words. ;D

I don't know, why there is no other RUC exchange. But there is one other pool:

P.S. btc-e.com is multi-currency excange, not only RUC/BTC. Primarily, is the BTC/USD exchange.

In this case, it is a scam because the withholding of information is a bad sign. Project authors must publish information about pre-mine at project startup. But not when everybody already know it.

Btw, they could change the code from "20000000000000000 * COIN;" to "2000000 * COIN;" some time ago, so there could be much more pre-mined coins.

Developer published confirmation of premine volume two days ago. Anyway, this change of source code is meaningless without premine. You can apply getblockbycount patch and see block #1, if you want.

This change of source code takes effect only on getwork and validation of block. So, if you mine block #1 with this function in client, you'll get 2M of coins. If you change code to "200000000000000 * COIN" some time later, you'll still have 2M of coins. Also, if you change this value to less than 2M, block #1 will be detected as invalid, and as a result, you'll get a split of block chain.

Seems not working...

Code:
./rucoin-0.4.0.1/src/rucoind getconnectioncount
0

It supports merged mining alongside with Bitcoins?!

Code:
./rucoin-0.4.0.1/src/rucoind getauxblock
error: {"code":-32601,"message":"Method not found"}

Seems not?!

Thanks!

I didn't think anyone had ever claimed it could be merged-mined? Otherwise I would be merged-mining it.

No point hacking it to add merged mining though, might as well instead wait for someone to put the merged mining patches into a very recent version of bitcoin to make a new updated version of some existing merged-mined coin then clone that to make umpteen new currencies that can be merged mined so we can really put merged mining to a stress-test of just how many chains we can merged-mine at once.

If no one updates a merged mined currency to latest bitcoin standards in some undetermined amount of time I will likely do it myself, probably to GRouPcoin as traditionally it is the one for prototyping/testing new stuff with, then use that to make afresh the UKB, CDN, UNS, GMC, GRF etc etc family of chains.

-MarkM-

EDIT: Or oh heck why not, maybe I will add merged mining to it for them for a 2 million RUC bounty, silly to have all that premine set aside for bounty and not use it eh?

It looks like the binaries on the download site are built on 5.x code and do support merged mining (I think).  The problem is, the 5.x binaries don't seem to connect to anything.  The source code on the site hasn't been updated.

It also appears that the 4.x and 5.x clients are not compatible with each other and won't connect.  (addnode= line on a 4.x client to a 5.x client will drop after a few seconds)

Sounds like they "enabled" one-sided merged-mining simply by hacking the next-gen Bitcoin.

It is pretty trivial, just change the visible to user occurences of the word bitcoin, optionally, if you happen to care at all about such cosmetics, its the hardest part of the whole hack so why bother, and change the handshake bytes (if they even bothered to do that or even realised such a thing exists) and the IRC channel (and optionally IRCserver/network), the genesis block, the genesis block hash check asserts, and the default port numbers.

I have done it umpteen times in the process of prototyping and testing Britcoin, Botcoin, Canadian Digital Notes, CZech Bitcash, GMC, GRF, UNS and so on and so on.

Since bitcoin still only has one-sided merged mining, they inherited that. They didn't bother to apply the merged mining patches used to make namecoin, devcoin, groupcoin, ixcoin, botcoin, britcoin, etc etc etc able to be auxiliary chains.

As civilisations calling themselves Russians have been reported/encountered in the Galactic Milieu (http://devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Galactic_Milieu) I don't see a puny two million premine as much of a problem, most nations pre-mine all their coins, I guess in Freeciv terms the government type of these Russians might be "Communism", it seems very socialist of them to kindly share most of the coins with others instead of hoarding the whole lot in their "central bank".

Unfortunately only having such a small amount of their currency in their own hands would somewhat restrict their ability to buy into all the other nations' currencies on the kind of scale the other nations have been accustomed to but hey, maybe they can spin it as the other nations being capitalist pigs not real democracies at all...

One might as well start one's hacking from the very latest Bitcoin code, so as to include the BIP-30 security fix for example. I wonder if multicoin is that up to date, maybe multicoin would be the easiest way to get up and running?

Okay, I have made a version that has merged mining enabled. I based it on GRouPcoin code, so it also includes the BIP-30 patch.

It is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/galacticmilieu/upload/RUCoin/

If you don't get connections, make sure you have incoming port (default is 8883) open and private message me your IP address and I will add you with -addnode.

EDIT: Oops, minor glitch, I forgot to change its aux-chain=ID to 0x0007. Done now and re-uploaded.

Sounds like the same behavior I saw where a 4.x client was connecting to a 5.x client.  They're incompatible with each other and drop showing 0.  After awhile though, my 5.x clients did find other 5.x clients on the internet to connect to and held those connections.

Which version is markm's build based on?

Mine is based on the only one that had source code available.

DIdn't I mention that if you don't get connections please private message me your IP address so I can use -addnode to have mine reach out to you because I have no incoming ports? If you too have no incoming ports oops no go. But if you do have incoming ports yet others are not reaching out to you once they see you in the IRC channel, this method of having others add your IP using -addnode can work around that.

Once I make sure it works, I can build based on Bitcoin 0.6 code (master branch at github) to bring it nicely up to date.

Here's what I'm trying to figure out:

Client 4.x does not connect to  client 5.x.

Sources on the site are 4.x (which I'm guessing is the source you've modified), binaries on the author's site are 5.x.

Since 4.x clients can't connect to 5.x clients, doesn't that essentially make 5.x clients a new fork of the chain?  The 5.x clients will never see what 4.x clients do unless the author has a bridge to link the two somehow...

If your code is based on the 4.x client then I'm guessing it works with the author's 4.x clients.  Which is the correct fork - 4.x or 5.x?

If you do port it to 6.x code you'd have to figure out which official client it's compatible with.

But that leaves the question of:  Which fork is the (author supported) official client?

I'd run some tests with transactions but I don't have any RUC to send around for testing.

Well from the look/sound of it, one is an open source branch the other is a closed-source / proprietary fork.

Which do you want to work with, open source cryptocurrencies or proprietary ones?

Obviously the open sourced version but it's not up to me to decide.

I'm waiting to see if the forums on the rucoin site come back to see what it says there about the two versions.  Its possible that the binary versions are still being worked on and the source may come out soon.  The 5.x binaries on the site were put there sometime in the last 2 months.

I expect that what we need to know is what sequence of four bytes they changed the handshake to.

It makes sense that they changed it, because the older version - the source code - used the exact same handshake bytes as bitcoin does, meaning it would actually connect to all the bitcoin daemons whose addresses it would have gotten from DNS and so on, and actually try to fit their blocks into its blockchain, and actually send bitcoin daemons its blocks and so on.

So it makes perfect sense they will have changed the handshake. The very first attempts to make GRouPcoin/DeVCoin we realised that had to be changed. I have changed it in this test of trying to implement proper merged mining, I changed it the way I have in other altcoins, a way that makes it easy for a human watching the packets to see at a glance which chains are trying to talk to each other: I am using "RUC:" for main net and "ruc-" for test net, just like GRouPcoin uses "GRP:" and "grp-", DeVCoin uses "DVC:" and "dvc-" and so on.

Once we are sure it works we can always change the handshake to whatever they want to use going forward; I didn't have any qualms about changing it since it is obvious from the fact their new proprietary version also changed it thus that going forward it is not going to be the same as bitcoin's handshake like it was in the 0.4 version the source code is for.

If you are into wireshark or ethernet sniffing or whatever, maybe for you it is trivial to find out what four byte sequence their new version does use, in which case we can easily adapt. And since I do provide source code, you can easily adapt it yourself to check that it really is using the bytes you think it is using.

I can run a packet sniffer to find out but I need to run some tests to see how it'll appear.

Where in the source code is the handshake id set?  (Groupcoin as an example)

Ok, lets see if I got this right...

bitcoin and rucoin v4.x is using the magic id of D9B4BEF9 (sent as F9 BE B4 D9)  from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_specification

If this is the code you're looking for then the rucoin 5.x binaries is sending across the wire "FA BF BA DB" reversing to become the magic id of DBBABFFA....

If I'm completely off.. let me know.  :)

Post by: markm on March 14, 2012, 12:07:48 AM
OK I changed it for main net to the magic ID you say above, and to the reverse, and neither got me connections in a short time.

I am using

char pchMessageStart[4] = { 0xDB, 0xBA, 0xBF, 0xFA };

again now for a longer trial as it has to flop through many many addresses that have no one at them at all it seems.

Is it still using same port number, even? (8883)

Ok, give me a few minutes to test some stuff here.

I'll compile your version with the new magic ID, force it to connect to my windows box and will see what it puts onto the network.

Title: Re: [ANNOUNCE] RuCoin - Russian alternate cryptocurrency - exchange is up already!
Post by: tiker on March 14, 2012, 01:06:57 AM
Here's what I did:

Magic code set to:
Code:
char pchMessageStart[4] = { 0xfa, 0xbf, 0xba, 0xdb };

I set the characters in order as I see them on the packet sniffer because looking at the bitcoin source code, they are in order and not reversed like that website I linked previously shows.

Compiled, ran with addnode= windows ip

Windows box is running the 5.x binary from rucoin website.

Packet sniffer running picked up the same magic code in the same order as above which is good.

However, the new client didn't hold the connection.  It dropped but did connect to two other hosts (one using port 8883 and one on port 8333).

I also noticed that running the compiled linux binary from the website is also acting up now.  I noticed one of the binaries dropped about 2000 blocks out of the linux chain so I'm going to wipe it out and start over.

Testing continues....

Wiped out the block data to try and download clean with the customized version but it won't connect to anything...

From the debug log:
Code:
trying connection 192.168.50.51:8883 lastseen=-342135.4hrs lasttry=-369913.2hrs
ThreadRPCServer started
connected 192.168.50.51:8883
sending: version (85 bytes)
socket closed
disconnecting node 192.168.50.51:8883

This is my windows box running the 5.x binary from the site.

Packet sniffer shows the connection and a couple of tcp packets back and forth.  The data packet with the version information is sent and rather than a "verack" response, the reply is a disconnect packet.  So while we are sending the same magic code that the pre-compiled binaries send it's still being rejected.

Post by: tiker on March 14, 2012, 01:45:10 AM
The precompiled linux binary doesn't seem to get far enough in a connection to send the data packet with the magic id..

From the debug log:
Code:
connected 192.168.50.51:8883
socket closed
disconnecting node 192.168.50.51:8883

Which means the Windows binary and Linux binary connect differently...

Well.. I'm taking a break from this for this evening.. I'll do some more tests tomorrow evening if I get a chance (if my wife will let me).

Last note though...

Windows connecting to linux (custom build from your source) doesn't work... connect attemps are made but is dropped
Windows connecting to linux pre-compiled build works.. but packets look odd compared to this page says it should go.. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_specification

The pre-compiled linux binary is downloading the block chain now where the custom build wouldn't.  I'm thinking there's more to the protocol than just the magic id that needs to be looked at but that's for another day.

One of the attempts you desribed drops connection after version is sent.

So maybe they decided they don't want to connect to their old version and simply check that the version number is not too low.

So we could try using a higher version number.

I hope you have their binaries well sandboxed, remember these are the guys who lied about their code not including any "premined" coins given out and gosh knows what else. No wonder they went proprietary, they probably realised they could modify the alert code to put any kinds of trojans and worms in that they wanted to and send out a trigger for them later once it was on enough machines or they found a customer for such a service...

In other news, I have taken my "PRGcoin" template and made a very new code version of RUCoin in case maybe the code they used to make their binary was recent enough to have the checksums on messages turned on or something like that. No connections so far but its still flipping through address so maybe just hasn't found them hidden among all the actual bitcoin daemons yet.

By the way, is not giving out source code a violation of the BSD license? Maybe they are in violation of that like SolidCoin was?

Not really sandboxed but it can't do much damage if it were bad.. everything can be rebuilt.

I have no idea about licensing... I avoid that kind of stuff.  Its possible that the source is still coming.  Without their forums working it's hard to tell.

Well it wouldn't if its just a normal bitcoin minimally hacked to put out the free two million coins in block one and to use the different ports and handshake.

But if that is what they are now using, I guess they just don't want to be merged-mined, which probably severely limits how much mining will ever happen on their chain. Oh well, if they don't want people to get involved thats their choice. Too bad, I was going to set up trading of it on my Open Transactions server but not much point if they are deliberately making it so vulnerable to attack (by discouraging people from mining it).

Someone was asking about them on a couple of other chains' threads so I figured since they seem incapable of using the search function of the forum I'd bring the thread up to the top so they could find it.

Also I am curious if the Ruskies are still running this, have they made any new versions (as old ones dont seem to work) and such.

RuCoin was stupid. Let's premine them for 2 weeks then release the chain to everyone else. LOL!

Two weeks is nothing, bitcoin has been mined for years before most of humanity has even heard of them.

The bigger problem is it has not seemed to work since they "upgraded" it, so no one except maybe a few Russians somewhere have been able to mine it at all.

Also, some coins were totally pre-issued in block one yet have been thriving, it seems more a matter of whether you bother to actually "back" your coin with "reserves" or something. Presumably they never "backed" their coin though so oh well, pretty much worthless probably.

So I registered with focalway.com and had no luck trying to run a miner on this pool.  I'm not sure what I did wrong.

Haven't e-mailed the owner of the site yet, but it says it's running with 2Ghash, but I'm not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree... haha

Merry Xmas!

They must be associated with BTC-e somehow otherwise why still host RUC trading. They've dropped other coins before trading has gotten this low.

The other discontinued coin aren't publicly listed anymore also, but if you guess the pair on the url, you can still bring up those old tickers.

A trade still happens from time to time on them too.

They will still give you deposit addresses but if you attempt to deposit RUC it does not go through. I attempted to add RUC to my account because the exchange is still "up" at: https://btc-e.com/exchange/ruc_btc (https://btc-e.com/exchange/ruc_btc) and 250+ confirmations later the deposit still has not credited.

Someone said customer support told them the wallets are disabled and the trade volume for ruc_btc says "0" but it shows completed trades in the past few days...

lol come on, nothing in this world is fair...
and is there any chance that by trc you mean frc? ;D

addition:

I mined it for a few minutes to test something, what i have to tell about it is that its a wierd coin, which has a wierd gui WITH an area that shows blocks information and an even more wierd RUChat (  ???  ) (yup, chat in the wallet...)
some blocks are SCRYPT and some others are SHA256D  ??? ??? ???
so it can be mined by all miners..

Isn't there a danger in having the exchange be somehow part of creating the coin? A little central bankish no? Not to mention the possibility of fake buy and sell orders.

That's one of my favorite things about it, it can be mined with scrypt AND sha256d plus it has two separate difficulties for scrypt miners and SHA256D miners to help keep things balanced.

Well a lot of people are still interested in it, the network hash rate is now 19.6 GHs and the next difficulty is set to double.

For those people that do not speak Russian I have developed a website in English.

It is still a work in progress but it might help to prevent a lot of people being put off by people who cannot read Russian.

Most people think this coin might be dead but the Dev's have just released a new client with even more features.

The Rucoin client has more built in features than any of the others.

Here is the English website link : http://rucoin-uk.com/ (http://rucoin-uk.com/)

FYP

WHy would anyone be interested in a coin that had a pre-mine, was pumped and dumped and still doesn't release source-code?  Obviously those behind the scam venture would like to sell off the rest off the pre-mine but why on earth would anyone want to buy them?

If the source code is released then I guess no harm mining it and dumping the mined coins on BTC-E if it makes more than mining something else - but there's no reason to believe it's anything other than an attempt to pump and dump more premined coins.

WHy would anyone be interested in a coin that had a pre-mine, was pumped and dumped and still doesn't release source-code?

Because it offers sha256d AND scrypt mining with separate difficulties depending on the hashrate of the networks for each algo offering a level playing field for cpu AND gpu miners, it has chat built right into the client, has the btc-e chat box built into the client, btc-e trade stats built into the client, network stats inside the client GUI. It has features that make it appealing.

Pre-mined...? So what...? Bitcoin was in it's third year by the time I found it, people had already mined the f*** out of it, I couldn't even mine a single coin per day, yet here I am mining away on Bitcoin which was never publicly announced before it's release and which openly admits in it's own wiki that Satoshi and his friends were using the program amongst themselves before thy ever thought to share it with the world. What does that mean...?

Yup... PRE-MINE...

Obviously those behind the scam venture would like to sell off the rest off the pre-mine but why on earth would anyone want to buy them?

Redundant... See answer above.

If the source code is released then I guess no harm mining it and dumping the mined coins on BTC-E if it makes more than mining something else - but there's no reason to believe it's anything other than an attempt to pump and dump more premined coins.

There's plenty of programs that we all use on a daily basis which we have never seen the source code for because it is simply not available, not every software in the world is open-source and just because it's not open-source doesn't mean it's malicious.

Make back-ups like your supposed to, store your coins in off-line wallets, run A/V software, anti-malware software and maintain your computer like your supposed to then even if something does turn out to be a virus the effects will be null to minimal.

Yup... PRE-MINE...

And remind me when did BTC get pumped/dumped then stop being supported for ages?

I can get BTC-E chat and trade stats from the BTC-E site without supporting the 2nd run of a pump-and-dump scam currency.

There's a difference between mining coins over a few years of developing the software from scratch (having invented the implementation in the first place) and awarding yourself a huge chunk of coins in the genesis block of a copy.

But no problem - so long as everyone remembers what happened last time: massive dump followed by the currency basically vanishing for ages.  Just don't get caught actually holding them this time - sell them as you mine them.

Plenty of fools around here, unfortunately - who will fall for the same thing multiple times even if run by the same person/group.

Whether they pre-mined or not, I ENJOY mining this coin. I can't really say that about any other coin.

They didn't stop supporting it, it seems to me that they have been working on it and improving it.

A pre-mine is meaningless to me, especially for a coin which already came out a couple years ago and is being revived. Since it came out a couple years ago, the pre-mined coins have probably already been sold off or mostly sold off which means the coins are somewhere in the network which as an end user means to me that it is no different than joining Bitcoin 3 years after it's development like I and many people in these forums have already done.

Yes, Satoshi and his friends were the originators and they deserve the earnings from their "pre-mine" but I think RuCoin is an excellent creation of it's own which has set itself aside as distinctly different from bitcoin in my mind and I'm not going to stop using it just because you don't think it's fair that you didn't have a chance to be an earliest adopter...

Also allow me to point out that RuCoin has built in defense features as evidenced here:

Make back-ups like your supposed to, store your coins in off-line wallets, run A/V software, anti-malware software and maintain your computer like your supposed to then even if something does turn out to be a virus the effects will be null to minimal.
this is only correct for winblows users.

Wow so they took a pumped and dumped premined coin and put a chat feature into it as well as allow you to do Scrypt and SHA256 mining.

Hmm Scrypt uses SHA256  and oh why have two mining algorithms? Why not just mine SHA256 because it is less memory intensive?

And all those premined coins....yeah...fuck that shit.  :D

Thanks for playing have a nice day...

In other news, they updated the client and you can now buy/sell your RUC/BTC straight from the client.

LOL right have you tested this pile of rubbish for 51% attack? Nope. Oh and can you paste the code that shows how this new "client" saves us all from 51% attack?

Pretty pictures hmm where have I seen that....oh right....look the pretty pictures that used to be at this link are gone:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=77606.0

No one cares if the client has exchange data built into it. The foundation of the start of this pile of rubbish was that a "community player" decided to start a new chain in October 2011 and premine the fuck out of it for several weeks. Then give access to people slowly and have them mine it. Then dump the shit on the btc-e exchange which used to be listed on their site (currently a hidden link).

If there is one thing that the alt coin community has shown is the distaste for premined bullshit alt chains.

I mean, very cool idea with the 2 algos. But it's a pump and dump clear through. Maybe not dump as in kill-it-dump but there is an enormous premine that is just waiting to pick up the BTC of the naive.

Why so many haters in here for Rucoin? The client offers different and impressive features and for the first time offers a system to reduce 51% attacks.

Seems like a very stable and secure coin.

If you can read Russian, you will know that there main goal with this coin is for it to be stable and not it being about how much it might be "worth".

Bitcoin is "worth" a lot right now but it is not stable from a trading point of view at all.

The downloads section seems to only have a windows setup exe, no sign of source code so it can be built for other platforms?

Also it seems to be a -qt, no sign of the daemon.

-MarkM-

the linux version is the daemon, still no source, so nty (VM only)

So you have to install some specific version of some specific flavour of linux into a virtual machine in order to get it to run?

Where do you even get it itself? Does it include a whole VM image with all the right versions of all the dependencies or something like that?

I have to compile all the coin types myself because I use Fedora, and Fedora does not include elliptic crypto in its openssl, so I have to make a custom version of openssl that I compile specially to provide the elliptic curve stuff. Installing a virtualisation system and running a virtual machine seems like overkill security, how likely is it that running it as user "ruc" with no access to other usernames' blockchains and wallets could give it access to other coins' wallets?

Unfortunately there are haters for *EVERY* coin here.

I'm actually kinda impressed at the client and the sha+scrypt. I must say I'm super leery about premine. You could argue that does or does not make a difference, but I prefer fair/advance warning.
I'm also a bit skeptical of it being a 'hidden' exchange at BTC and the really high level of integration of the client with BTC-e. Is it BTC-e's own coin? If so- they should say so. Having a hidden exchange gives you the feeling that special set of people have been allowed to "buy in early". It's weird. Also- imagine if MtGox had actually made Bitcoin, would you really feel comfortable sending them Bank transfers to "buy" bitcoin from them?

Food for thought. For the record, I'm not a hater. :-)

As long as the RUC chain still continues so will the coin.

There is not one coin out there that I can say I hate, maybe Solidcoin but that is only because RealSolid disappeared with a lot of peoples invested Bitcoins.

The difference with Solidcoin being removed from trading on BTC-E is that it died a complete death and even the chain stopped.

About half an hour ago the Dev's for Rucoin pushed out another client update, which shows they are still working on it and that's it far from "Dead".

Every single coin, including Bitcoin, is only "worth" something because the general masses have deemed it to be so, the more people that want something, the higher they are willing to pay, which means Bitcoin in theory has no currency ceiling until it gets to the point where everyone has to deal in decimal points and not actual whole Bitcoins for purchases.

Even though BTC-E has the trading link for RUC not openly visible means that Rucoin is still "worth" something, meaning at least some people want it.

With regards to pre mining, even if you mine a few million coins, is nothing compared to the amount of coins that can be mined given enough time.

Are you saying RUCoin keeps making coins forever like devcoin and groupcoin, instead of lowering the minting over time until it eventually stops making new coins so only a fixed known in advance total will ever exist?

One thing I don't like about RUCoin is if they can one day arbitrarily paste scrypt in on top of the original plain old bitcoin style hashing they might as easily one day decide to create another couple of million coins for themselves in some special hard-coded block, or change the total coins that will ever exist, or basically screw with it any way they choose... Solidcoin comes to mind for good reason.

Hmm grep does find one mention of it in main src dir:

grep scrypt *
crypter.h:which may require more parameters (such as scrypt).
crypter.h:    // 1 = scrypt()
crypter.h:    // such as the various parameters to scrypt

-MarkM-

EDIT: I looked at the mining code, it definitely only does the normal old bitcoin style mining, no scrypt.

I have developed a website to translate the Russian website into English.

I feel this would increase the chance of new users wanting to give Rucoin a try but were initially uneasy about when seeing a Russian website.

More features will be added soon, as they get verified, like for instance the source code.

Every download on my site has been tested by myself and with various virus, malware and spyware software.

If in doubt then there are links to go straight to the Russian website to look for yourself.

Website address : http://rucoin-uk.com/ (http://rucoin-uk.com/)

Thanks

I would say to make the exchange less depressing, if you saw coins on an exchange that are struggling badly or have no BTC's backing them up.

Solidcoin is still on there too and hidden.

Maybe they keep them active in case the coins get another burst of life.

Is Rucoin dead?

Depends on who you ask. I still mine and support it.

For the moment it is the only coin with 51% attack protection built into the client/network, has it's own in-client chat, it is the only client which is scrypt and sha256d friendly, the only client which announces your worker id to the network when you find a block (people love to have their ego stroked) and it is the only client with btc-e trade built directly into the client.

There is currently nowhere to trade it but I believe there is enough interest and enough volume for it to be successful on an exchange somewhere.

I was originally going to add it to an exchange I was building at http://crypto-exchange.us but have placed that project on the back-burner temporarily due to not having time to finish some cosmetic changes to the orderbook as I have been busy dev'ing other projects for other people. I will likely either sell the site or re-purpose it for something which demands less time and administration.

But people are mining RuCoin, it has an active dev team and I believe it is the best client currently available.

It is closed-source which the devs say they are keeping it closed source for the time being because they are not finished developing it and don't want to release the code until they are sure the client is 100% safe from security and network vulnerabilities.

What I know for sure is that it has been around nearly a coupe of years without issue/incident and I have been mining it personally for 6+ months without issue/incident and the devs always do their best to help (even if it may take them a long time to respond).

It was my biggest fault ever and blow to my reputation, it was very difficult to recover it. But I closed my pool immediately when discovered 2M of premined coins in the block #1. Don't do the same errors ever. Never trust closed-source coins.

So you claim... Have any proof...?

And besides, what does that mean at this point anyway, nearly two years into a coin 20 Million is the least of your worries if "pre-mine" concerns you...

I know that by the time I found bitcoin it had already been around a couple years and was mined before it was announced, doesn't seem to have hurt them any...

Also, you're not one to talk having given 10 (Million was it...?) pre-mined NVC to BTC-e to have them add your unoriginal alt-coin to their exchange.

I think RUC belongs in an exchange more than NVC does by a long-shot...

And yet no one has... And no other coin has the built-in network security to protect it from 51% attack which I have seen in action with my own eyes.

And since the coin is essentially defined by the code inside the client well, YEAH, the client pretty much dictates what the coin is in every literal sense of the word.

Rucoin may come back, its just that BTC-E took it on and then threw it away.

That will never help a coin, makes people think it is dead.

BTC-e has carried RUC twice and removed it twice. Both times due to low trade volume because no one knew what RUC was and others assumed RUC was the same as RUR.

I think at this point enough people are mining RUC and I think enough people would trade in it to make it a feasible addition to an exchange.

How am I supposed to get enough RUC to make the cell? I'm so confused but it seems you can't mine unless you already have coins?

Go to rucoin.config

Add "minerid=desiredminerid" and see if that fixes it...
