Countries in the continent africa is embracing the blockchain technology and Bitcoin in their masses. In some countries the government of the day are showing some kind of support or interest fo :)r the new technology while others are advising their citizens not to use the cryptocurrency due to fear of fraudulent activities. I have taken my time, done some research plus the little knowledge I already have, made this thread to highlight the three ways Bitcoin is been used in Africa. They include;

[1]: Trading and investment:
Most citizens of countries in Africa like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kanye, South Africa etc have turned to Bitcoin as their recuse from poverty and others to increase their asset portfolio. According to the report carried out in August 2018, five (5) Africa countries where ranked among the Top 50 highest traders of Bitcoin on Localbitcoin exchange namely;
7. Nigeria – $258M
10. South Africa – $98M
23. Kenya – $25M
36. Morocco -- $6M
43. Tanzania -- $2M
Source (https://bitcoinke.io/2018/08/kenya-ranked-3rd-africa-23-globally-bitcoin-trading-volumes/)

Note: This is just a statistics from one exchange, we have numerous exchange both locally and international that Africans are trading on and that's just one of the ways Bitcoin (cryptocurrency in general) is been used in Africa.

[2] Online shopping:
The number of cryptocurrency related online shops is raising daily mostly in South Africa and Nigeria. Africans can now buy goods online from the comfort of their home and pay with bitcoin. Physical store are also joining the party, In 2017 one of South Africans biggest grocery stores called Pick n Pay showed interest in accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment we also have numerous merchant already accepting Bitcoin and few of them can be found here, Merchants Accepting bitcoins for Payment in Africa (https://99bitcoins.com/merchants-accepting-bitcoins-africa/amp/)

[3]: Online transaction (money transfer):
Any one familiar with Africans knows we're migraters, there isn't any part of the world you'll go that you won't find Africans in their number, majority of the times it's the hustle that take them there. Many Africans leave their country for search of greener pastures in Western countries and when they succeed they always struggled to send money back to their families but with the help of Bitcoin everything has changed as sending money is now made easier, cheaper, faster and more secured. The luno wallet/exchange is one of the many platforms used for that purpose as it make it easier to convert Bitcoin to local currency.

If you're a blockchain developer and you were looking for the next regional area to get potential customer for whatever service you're providing I suggest you join the few companies tapping the potential found in Africa.

Here are some useful article you can read to convince you more;

From the beginning African countries has an open mind regarding bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and that is the reason bitcoin investments and trading has progressed which is a great thing for the crypto world because government acceptance is the only way that bitcoins future can be secured and with these kind of freedom there are many benefits that can gain not only for the market but also for there citizens

Yeah, I also read some articles about blockchain events for people where they can learn about cryptocurrencies and ways to use them in Africa. I honestly believe that Bitcoin can be a game-changer for the continent. There aren't many adequate countries there, and the overall economy is terrible. Not to mention extremely high level of corruption and issues of the lack of recognition of official governments. People don't use banks there much. And the thing is that they don't need to. They can skip the banking part and move right to bitcoins on smartphones (while being very poor and not able to afford, say, computers, many people there have smartphones). If they abandon their terrible fiat and rely on cryptos, it can lead to economic prosperity of the region.

Truth be told, in Africa we see bitcoin as an investment rather than as a medium of payment. So, we acquire it and then wait awhile to resell it like a real estate. In Nigeria, I am yet to see any shop accepting Bitcoin for payment. One has to exchange bitcoin first into fiat before any payment for goods and services.

The crypto community is growing steadily in Africa
The countriesyou have mentioned, especially Nigeria, are the vanguards of the continent
Exchange platforms are currently being held in some of these countries
What is remarkable is that some of these projects devote part of their investments to spreading the idea of crypto  in African societies to villages, forests and even high mountains.

The African continent has such a large population and this can be a very good market share for the development of digital currencies. some weaknesses that must be addressed are infrastructure, because in the African country at present Infrastructure is a major problem. technology can still be said to not be too good in countries in the African continent. what the government needs to do on the African continent is to improve infrastructure first so that someday later digital currencies can develop and be facilitated well for all citizens on the African continent.

Nigeria is always fast in adopting and catching up with anything that can increase the standard of living. cryptocurrency has been source of livelihood. crypto has actually put the smile on the face of nigerian than the government. fast adoption has always been because of high internet presence. Nigeria is among top 10 internet users in the world. However, buying goods from local store using bitcoin is one of the challenge. it is very easy to see merchant that accept bitcoin as payment for services but not goods.

Although the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile, Bitcoin remains an exciting investment opportunity .More and more Africans are turning to Bitcoin to overcome the limitations of restrictive banking options ( Money transfer). Also, various e-commerce platforms have adopted Bitcoin as a form of payment.

The biggest advantage of using Bitcoin or any other blockchain-based cryptocurrency is all about adopting a global platform which allows inclusion of everyone in the system. Anyone from any corner of the world has a platform to grab global opportunities through using a uniform payment system, I see this as the golden opportunity for undeveloped and developing countries to gain the value from this international ecosystem.

African has a large market for international market and since cryptocurrencies or bitcoin make transactions easy I think Africa will be the greater beneficiary of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general.  Blockchain technology discovered, 7777⅞⅞7if will utilize will help many Africa's nations to come out of most of the financial problems they are going through currently.  The third world countries will also benefit from bitcoin and that is only if there can adopt it into their financial system.  Many African countries are poor today because of the influence of major currency on their economic and since bitcoin is decentralized I think it will provide solutions.

Government interference is one of the key limitations to growth of cryptocurrency and blockchain in Africa. In Africa for example, the government has declared bitcoin and other digital asset unregulated and goes on to advise against it's trades or circulation as anyone engaged does so at his or her own risks.
This sort of stand would dissuade majority of the neutral audience and also willing merchants from accepting cryptocurrency

Wow there are a huge leap between Nigeria and South Africa! I would have never guessed that and I hope the large amount does not consist mainly from bitcoins that were used in scams.! <Nigeria is famous for their scammers>  >:(

It is also strange that ATM distributors are not targeting countries like Nigeria. ??? Coinatmradar.com shows zero hits for Nigeria.  :P
I see they also have only 11 Bitcoin exchanges in the country, which is not a lot for such a large amount of money going in and out of Bitcoin.  ::)

Without a doubt Nigeria was on the number one list because most of the scammers in the internet are originated from there, it seems that scamming is the most profitable job in their country. I watched a documentary about scammers in Nigeria and they are truly an expert in different kinds of techniques when it comes to fraud that even the government of other country used to believed in those scams.

Nigeria , South Africa and Kenya i have no doubt about that but Mexico and Tanzania there is no way they are on top than Ghana when its comes to the use of bitcoin ,  Even  in Africa most  of the crypto exchange  companies  are in Ghana and Nigeria . But its really  interesting how Africa is adopting  the digital currency  and blockchain  the master technology  behind it. I know Gradually very soon very will see most Blockchain project coming from Africa  to compete the global  blockchain market ..

Truth be told, that is actually what the whole world is primarily viewing Bitcoin so this is not unique to the African continent and this kind of orientation had been the driving force in the great speculative activities happening in 2017 and early 2018 causing the Bitcoin to almost reach the 20K mark. And now that the speculations have subsided, we are witnessing the many great dips of Bitcoin. There is nothing we can do if people are seeing Bitcoin as something to speculate though because just like any asset the holders have all the rights in the world to do whatever with something he is owning. However, speculations alone will not be making Bitcoin great as we need practical applications or uses to make it last and be stronger. The continent of Africa is representing a great frontier for Bitcoin and I am sure that given the chance and massive adoption there is a great future for Bitcoin in there.

Like African countries It has become common for any country in the world to use bitcoin as a trading asset but not as a currency to make payments in real world scenarios and also there is no way trading a volumes can do good to a currency without any adoption into businesses because at the end without any real use it can become useless so such trading volumes in Africa are useless which can do no good to the future of bitcoin

It is good to know that Africa is supporting cryptocurrencies to such an extent where offline stores are enabled to accept cryptocurrencies as a payment.
Many countries have still not legalized bitcoin due to fear but seeing Africa accepting could lead other countries to accept it as well.
Although bitcoin is used for money transfer, trading and investment already in many countries, I would definitely like to know which online stores in Africa are accepting bitcoin as a payment.
I would be glad if you could PM or post it here some online stores that accept bitcoin.

They are mostly using bitcoin for scamming purposes, they love that no one can seize their scammed money.  That is one of those countries where people will slit your throat for a few dollars.  I recently saw a video of nigerians burning two men over potatoes.

Poverty can be definitely eliminated withing few couple of years if African countries or any other country use BTC wisely with adoption and allowing there people to use it within regulations but the problem is none of them use BTC the right way because most people who use advance technology today have bad ideas specially when it comes to cryptocurrencies and that is why using Bitcoin in the right way is much important if African countries wants to benefit properly from the Bitcoin network

Truly the potential of bitcoin had not been fully harnessed in Africa largely due to improper enlightenment,  some  people who had an encounter with btc believed its a ponzi scheme hence disassociated themselves from it while the government had not been helping matters having warn its citizens against using it, while the few who took the bull by the horn have fully adopted it for trading using foreign exchanges are doing excellently well.

That's good, bitcoin has already reached the African countries. Particularly bitcoin was used by African people for transaction needs on business rather than into trading or into gambling. The major reason is that they cannot carry huge funds due to the inflation of the fiat. Using this as an opportunity some used bitcoin to scam people, and at some point people used bitcoin much more than mpeso which is much used for transaction needs. More good to happen in African countries through bitcoin.

Positive attitude to bitcoin in Africa it is already good enough. Even the fact that they have no special means to use it, does not have a bad effect. After all, this is a temporary phenomenon and infrastructure can be developed without problems. The main thing that was desire.

That's why investment and trading is the number way and most famous way Bitcoin is been used in Africa. About the stores, I believe you're taking about physical stores because if you meant online stores then you aren't updated. I have shopped severally frim both Nigerin stores and African stores accepting Bitcoin. The government of the day aren't in support of cryptocurrency yet that's why we don't have any physical store accepting Bitcoin. Everything bitcoin is used for in the country isn't official.

Africa as an undeveloped continent have embraced cryptocurrency and bitcoin as a means of making payments and many African countries government have remain silent on the usage of bitcoin in their country is it that they are not aware of the existence of bitcoin in they jurisdiction or they just decided to remain quite about it. But Nigeria has been the famous among all as it citizens have embraced cryptocurrency as their secondary currency.

More effective for distributing bitcoin to Africa, it will give more space for bitcoin could development to all country in the world, today only Asian and Europe have accepted and know about bitcoin as transaction and investing, but by used at Africa bitcoin become famous transaction at the next time.
some time ago I read in this forum about the number of cryptocurrency that was adopted in Africa, maybe they also store a very large amount of bitcoin in Africa, maybe there is a more appropriate place to adopt digital currencies.

No my friend, these countries will never accept Crypto currencies like Bitcoin, because of the transparency. They would much rather create their own GovCoin that are controlled by them and continue with their corruption. The media has been fighting for years to highlight corruption and to bring it to the public, but these corrupt governments are still doing this with zero accountability. <Look at Robert Mugabe and his wife as a typical example>

You cannot use a pseudo anonymous currency to eliminate corruption, because these people will use that to their advantage.  >:(

Indeed the continent of Africa and its people are embracing the cryptocurrency technology at an early point of time when bitcoin was introduced in the public. The cryptocurrency enthusiast in Africa are persons who are good in popularizing bitcoin and the blockchain even if the internet system in several countries are not par to other developing countries. Hopefully they will have more faster and stable internet connections soon to more promote bitcoin and the blockchain.

We know already what is the situation inside Africa and they are not really improving in terms of financial stability but they are looking to be a part of crypt development. Such a good thing to see how they adopt the new system despite of their struggles but for sure only few of them were making crypto as an investment and many were ignoring these thing.

Crypto isn't just for uncivilized country nor they are limited of resources, everyone are welcome to be a part of this growing technology.
Yes, they don't have good financial stability to put huge amount in investment but they are looking forward into their success. Maybe this time, we can't see for it huge development but they can acquire it from time to time and when their government will help them.

It's because crypto is sound money for them, and it will be a big help for them to alleviate their standard of living through the help of crypto, I reckon.

Bigger nations will lost a lot if their population will be totally in crypto, just like China says. They think it will disrupt their stable economy. On the other hand, developing nation has nothing to lose and it's a win-win situation for them, that's why it's easy for their government to turn pro-crypto.

Africa is a continent that is full of corruption and dictatorship regimes, African politicians only pass laws that benefit their corruption and dictatorship, something like bitcoin that is decentralized can only survive in a small number of African countries. And note that the maim impediment of people using bitcoin will not be the lack of internet or lack of electricity or lack of computers or lack smartphones... it will be because of corrupt politicians

Any African out there willing to connect with others, you can join the fit-to-talk (https://fittotalk.com/) project started by Jet Cash, it has a board dedicated to Africans.

It seems to me that you took advantage of the opportunity to promote this forum " fittotalk.com "

Woah really ? Thats nice .  i see that africa is left behind on the latest trends especially on cryptocurrency  but if we will educate them and sponsor them some items that they can use to access and operate cryptos, im pretty sure that their country can also add to the growing adoption of cryptos  .

True, governments in Africa are somewhat corrupt, not all but some government officials are for sure corrupt, but what I liked with their decision is that

Oh i see  . this can be also the reason on why africa is so poor .

almost all countries in Africa has Bitcoin approved, it could be a big help for the citizens, and hopefully it could lessen the poverty.

I guess thats not true . i see alot of users here , saying that africa is not supporting cryptos  .

In Africa generally, there are many who purchase Bitcoin only just to use it for online means for payment of  purchases and services. But they can not use it for payment of goods and services offline.
The few things that contributed to this are: some Africa governments restricted the use of Bitcoin kn their country and also technology in Africa is still in the developing stage. Not everyone knows about this coin there but some good amount of youths.

I think the most usage of bitcoin is for trading, include in Africa. No wonder if bitcoin volume is big in coinmarketcap.
And peoples are using it as payment instrument too, mainly from underground world i guess.
So, no matter how bitcoin used anywhere, it is good to hear that many peoples still using bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

your guesses here have no value specially since you are making random wrong guesses. it is obvious that one of the biggest usages of bitcoin because of its volatility is for trading and investment but that doesn't mean the usage of bitcoin as a currency is small or limited to illegal activities.
in fact Africans are using bitcoin as a means of payment more than anybody else in any other country. there are people who have been mining bitcoin and using it to buy food and have it delivered to their country for over a year now.

Its a good sign. But it is Africa and we know it is not yet that continent with high technology.
Despite that, if they are using it in high amounts then we might be in a good year.

If only this can be done to more known countries with great technology then be shared to another country then it will be an easy walk for bitcoin to be used regularly.
But look at us now, we are still having problems without fiat on our side or credit cards.

Did the uses of bitcoin increases in Africa? Probably, the usage may have increased in some other African countries like South Africa and the rest but in Nigeria, i will say no, reason been that majority of Nigerians knows about bitcoin (Majority= a large number of people) during the era of ponzi scheme called MMM, If you are from that part of the world you will definitely know what i mean by MMM. Its a ponzi scheme that make many Nigerians to be dealing and owning bitcoin incliding me. Bitcoin could have been porpular than its or even popular than our Naira it self if not for the bad reputation of MMM, in fact government need to start warning people to stop trading with bitcoin after MMM collapsed and many Nigerians lost millions of dollars to the fraudulent scheme. I lost a lots of my investments too. Many Nigerians like me who still do have anything to do with bitcoin are doing it because of our own research and efforts done in findings that Proof  that bitcoin is not a scam like our government used to make it look like. Though, you can be scarmed which is not limited to bitcoin alone, as scammer are everywhere in every bussiness.

Bitcoin has good future in south Africa, even the price of bitcoin is rise against rand south africa. Now it's about 52,000 rand per 1 btc . People there really like to trading bitcoin, there are many exchanges site that ease african people to trading, exchange such as abra, etoro and coinmama and etc was ease people there to buy bitcoin via credit card or bank transfer. So its make the adoption grow faster. I hope people there more often to use bitcoin at online shop rather than use it for trading.

The truth is that the African government are not interfering with citizens who deals in cryptocurrencies particularly bitcoin in Nigeria the Central bank advice its citizens to stay aware from cryptos however the anonymous transaction and usage of bitcoin makes it easier for people in African to adopt particularly to buy at low and sell at high accruing some profits then exchange to fiat using some notable exchangers even though its on record that no business organisation, stores etc had started accepting cryptos.

A good and positive thing, about Bitcoin users in Africa today, I also think positively about this news,
in another discussion on Bitcoin in Africa, there has been a very good increase in education and cryptocurrency this year, with very limited economic and educational conditions, bitcoin is a good alternative in Africa, this is what the world in particular in the crypto sector is concerned about Bitcoin.
In the meantime it still gives a very positive thing for cryptocurrency.
In conclusion: Bitcoin can change the economy and the special life of this African community the best.

LOL, Nigeria on top. Well, gotta find a way to move around all that money.

But talking about Africa in general, it's easy to see why they are embracing Bitcoin. A large portion is still unbanked and since the telecom industry was slow to build phone lines, they transitioned rather quickly to mobile. Dealing with money digitally has become natural.

I believe there are also charities using bitciins to send donations so that gave people more incentives to use it themselves. They can just ask to be sent the donation in bitcoin and keep some for holding.

In Africa, some of the government knows next to nothing concerning blockchain technology and Bitcoin. They are always seeing the transaction involving bitcoin as a scam and ultimately an economic crime. Their citizens dealing with bitcoin are doing so at their own risk. I think the first point of call is for the government to acknowledge bitcoin and legalize the usage in their economy.

Well I agree with this. Bitcoin have been rampant in Africa in General especially West Africa and South Africa Countries. In Nigeria, an online shopping company like Jumia, Konga and many others once accepted Bitcoin as mode of payment. Also in some popular Cities in Nigeria like Abuja and Lagos, I have also seen some buying and selling of landed property were Bitcoin were deployed as the means of transactions. And recently I heard South Africa have launch a Bitcoin ATM. So we are still Developing and hopefully it will continue to circulate and gain more adoption.

Countries in the continent africa is embracing the blockchain technology and Bitcoin in their masses. In some countries the government of the day are showing some kind of support or interest for the new technology while others are advising their citizens not to use the cryptocurrency due to fear of fraudulent activities. I have taken my time, done some research plus the little knowledge I already have, made this thread to highlight the three ways Bitcoin is been used in Africa. They include;

[1]: Trading and investment:
Most citizens of countries in Africa like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kanye, South Africa etc have turned to Bitcoin as their recuse from poverty and others to increase their asset portfolio. According to the report carried out in August 2018, five (5) Africa countries where ranked among the Top 50 highest traders of Bitcoin on Localbitcoin exchange namely;

The African countries especially Nigeria taking the lead in accepting Bitcoin. It is quite unfortunate that no merchant would trade his/her goods for Bitcoin, in short they don't want to hear about it as sometimes ago, the government tried to scare people away from Bitcoin trade as it was termed scam. Thus the use of Bitcoin in Nigeria has been based only to online transactions and should cash is needed, Bitcoin has to be traded for Fiat via Luno or LocalBitcoin.

While its worthy of note to appreciate the effort you have made in coming up  with the statistics and also making the effort to change the narrative of some people that Africa is still far behind in the area pf adoption of blockchain and its accompanying products, it will also be over reaching to conclude that most citizens of the countries you listed are now turning into crypto because that is going to be a false representation. Yes the penetration is growing but the truth is, its not enough to classify as most because the technological push and the legal framework to push for such qualification is practically non-existent. May be in the next 5 to 10 years we can say ''much more people...''

The reality of Bitcoin in Africa is increasing educational opportunities, peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchanges, knowing this is first hand. They partnered with Zam Zam Water to build a school in Rwanda that was fully funded by cryptocurrency through the BbuiltwithBitcoin initiative. Now, the very well-known Red & Yellow business schools open their doors to cryptocurrency, allowing more people the opportunity to get higher education. While the centralized agency still gives a cold shoulder cryptocurrency, the truth is that Bitcoin is changing lives for the better for many Africans

This is actually the first step in introducing cryptocurrencies to third-world countries. The only barrier that separates first and third world countries in introducing cryptocurrencies are the opportunity and technology but this article make it possible that they may be start slowly learning about its components.

But with bitcoin, they can just skip the banking part. There are also many blockchain events where people can learn about the ways on how to use crypto in Africa

I doubt that they can skip the banking part as fiat is still an essential part of any country's resources. They cannot shift quickly from fiat to cryptocurrencies as the country needs to adapt and improve their technology. But this may be the first step into the ideal future of having a digitalized form of payment.

I think Africa has great potential to be a country with good crypto growth. I see today, many projects that introduce crypto for Africa. real estate for Africa, economic assets for Africa, and transaction platforms for Africa.

The African country is one of the big market shares, this is because the population is so large. But in the African country the development of technology and infrastructure has been slightly hampered. That makes a delay in the development of cryptocurrencies, it is necessary to increase infrastructure so that the creation of an increasingly cryptocurrencies ecosystem. Trading volume can increase and it can be an indicator that the volume of bitcoin is increasing overall.

This is your opinion and I can categorically state, that the state of the economy here is not all doom and gloom. And no, people use banks very actively in Africa. Bitcoin may not 'enhance the lives' of people living in Africa, as it needs Investments. The blockchain if implemented would streamline so many sectors and would facilitate actions which would normally take ages to document.
It would also Improve transparency, and hence reduce corruption.

Bitcoin will be embraced by Africa because it's a relatively good store of value in the long run and will facilitate microtransactions once the Lightning Network is ready for mass adoption. States may fear it and thus prohibit it, but they cannot stop bitcoin from being traded anonymously and on the black market.

I personally have several friends from Africa and they never used bitcoin.
Why?
Well, they live in rural area of Africa without electricity and with very weak Internet connection.
So, it's very difficult for them even to use Internet so to learn and use Bitcoin is even more difficult.
But things are changing very fast in Africa so I think that soon this situation will change and improve.

Africa has being a market place for all foreign and other investors to promote must of the goods, and record has it that African ride the most expensive cars and use the most sufisticated technology, and at that the continent will always embrace a good technology like bitcoin despite the fact that the authorities over their have not really come out to declare they support for the currency. May be they don't even know it exist or just paying deef ears to the presence of bitcoin in the continent.

Jokes aside, like others have said many people in Africa don’t have banks or don’t have the opportunity. But with rising mobile device usage cryptocurrency presents an excellent financial instrument that can help shield people from inflation or corruption. Also even making income from trading to help people out of poverty.

One of the best place to feed your innovations with people ready to accept and work with it is AFRICA. I can say that Africans are largely using bitcoin in all ways that they can and it’s spreading everyday among them. I am particular  about west  africa, majority of people have identified cryptocurrency as a means to be free from poverty and bondage and they have  keyed into it. I am sure very soon africa  will be one of the largest users of cryptocurrency in the world.

Countries in the continent africa is embracing the blockchain technology and Bitcoin in their masses. In some countries the government of the day are showing some kind of support or interest for the new technology while others are advising their citizens not to use the cryptocurrency due to fear of fraudulent activities. I have taken my time, done some research plus the little knowledge I already have, made this thread to highlight the three ways Bitcoin is been used in Africa. They include;

Bitcoin's demand is increasing despite volatility and it's good to know that Africa is open to this new kind of innovation. Having Bitcoin regulated in Africa opens great opportunities for its people and provides quality of living, it would change their way of living. It gives a good and positive impact that would also help attract other countries gain their interest and trust towards Bitcoin and be part of cryptoworld.

The analysis you have made in terms of bitcoin usage in africa is true especially that of people in Nigeria using it as a means to stay out of poverty. I am a Nigerian and I have seen so many people who are into bitcoin trading and also bounty hunting. Infact, most Nigerian youths who are done with school and are yet to get a good job are either into bitcoin trading or bounty hunting or both just to make ends meet. There are also lots of Nigerians in different parts of the world including other Africans who has left their country to hustle and make money and now with bitcoin they easily send money home instead of usng western union which takes too much time and stress. In the past one year, I have seen lots of shopping been doen with bitcoin online by people too, that shows bitcoin usuage is really growing in this part of the world.

Africa is a promising continent for future technology because it is still open to potential human resources and natural resources. In a modern country it is full of technology, where people have many choices to use. Unlike Africa, which is moving towards progress, thirst for technology.
As long as the government and society move along the course of course Africa for the next few decades can become an economic power that deserves to be taken into account. Including the use of digital technology to maximize Bitcoin and empower the blockchain which is very efficient for all fields.

- I don't think people in Africa are adapting and very active with using crypto and bitcoin because their living conditions and development do not seem to allow too many people to participate in this area, they are still very tired and trying to fight everyday life, using a technology like crypto and bitcoin, that is not the job they can do. People who are active in using crypto in Africa, these are probably criminals, they want to invest and launder money, even using crypto and bitcoin to buy weapons and buy banned items, a very popular thing with special features of bitcoin

This topic has taught me a great lesson because Africa is considered as a continent that is in general, an always late in development and if people on this continent are ready to accept and use crypto in such a manner, I see crypto adoption to be very easy because even those we considered as the last to learn have learnt to learn what is good and active trading it.

Africa is one of the continents that embrace cryptocurrency. Although most of the countries are underdeveloped and developing, people are gradually adopting cryptocurrency and its investment. The cryptocurrency merchants are also keen on the provision of crypto services to the extent of allowing the purchase of mobile phone airtime and payment of some TV satellite stations with cryptocurrency. If much crypto infrastructure is diverted to Africa, cryptocurrency will meet another rise in cryptocurrency adoption.

Africa still not have good place for bitcoin because many country still not understand about how to use bitcoin, maybe need promotion on africa how to make bitcoin become more popular transaction there.

People in Africa want currencies that aren't printed by the central banks there though. You can sell USD easily...They were also first to adopt mobile payments with MPesa but the fees using M-pesa are up to 20%, people will definitely adopt bitcoin more over time.

It's the on-ramps and off-ramps to buy bitcoin in Africa that need to increase and have easy ways to move Rand or USD there into crypto. These countries have the most to gain from acquiring sound money.

Bitcoins has been used by all Africans and that is good for the economy as it helps in the over all development of the people and the economy as whole and it helps to eradicate  major issues like unemployment issues and poverty from the continent. The people of African countries were ready to accept the new technology and embrace it with both hands as they wanted to bring a change in their country like freedom of finances which is possible only with bitcoins and block chain technology. Bitcoins has been used mostly by all the people in Africa and this has changed their lifestyle of living and has brought a positive impact in their lives.

All we know that africa is not progressive country. I think they will not easily adopt the system because  most of them are not aware in using technology. I think if they already know and adopt the system of using bitcoin they will have a chance or opportunity to change or improve their life to make it better.

Africa is a continent comprising of 54 different countries, all with their own laws and governments. Some are more or less progressive than others in Africa and the rest of the world.
There is definitely awareness of the technology, including other blockchain technologies other than bitcoin. I think the blockchain Africa conference has been running a few years now, and that always has regulators and people from different big banks etc in Africa in attendance. The banks and regulators in South Africa work with the exchanges to make sure users are doing KYC and AML, have proof of residence etc.

Unfortunately many people in these countries are drawn to bitcoin as a way to 'get rich quick', since pyramid and ponzi schemes are running rampant. I would say at least half of everyone involved in crypto is in some sort of scheme, based on the people who contact me for information. While it could be used to make lives better, it often makes things worse for those who get sucked into ponzi schemes. The best you can do is keep helping people to do things properly the 'legit' way.

The use of bitcoins has been increasing day by day in Africa. They are using Bitcoins as investment plans rather than using it as a medium of payment. In April 2015, Africa held its first ever Bitcoin conference in Cape Town, South Africa, and was followed up by another event in March this year. Now they are using bitcoins in following methods like Money Transfer, Tackling Piracy in Music, Metering Services, Crowdsourcing Ad, Online Payments, Payment for Products, Microfinance Institution and bidorbuy.

You maybe right for now, but in the future it might change.
When African crypto enthusiasts have better knowledge, experience, and of course better skills, both technical and scam skills (LOL), your statement might not be right anymore.
Fortunately, time will help investors become more knowledgeable, and with their own experience, precious lessons in crypto for years (losses, invest in scam projects, for example), they might become smarter and more carefully with their investment.
Consequently, over time, scam projects will harder to get succeed.
Anyway, in other side, scammers always find out ways to adapt and make more complicated scam projects.

Its good to hear that Africans are making inroad and headway to the usage of bitcoin however there is a lot of work and challenges toward actualizing the ultimate goal of the massive adoption of this coin, the sensitization and information dissemination about about is not vigorously carried out which resulted into skepticism by some people who heard some little information about it but doubted its legitimacy.
Some government unfriendly attitudes towards cryptos in Africa is another bureaucratic  bottleneck and barrier towards its massive adoption in a situation where the Central Banking official makes a derogatory remarks about the dangers in investing in it will result into caution to would-be investors.
Be as it may individual or private investors are gradually increasing and fully utilizing the benefits of using bitcoin especially in trading a lot of online services in the buying and selling of bitcoin especially in Nigeria.

Bitcoin is being used as a way to enable Africans living in the Diaspora to send their money back home cheaply. One of these transfer platforms is Kenyan-based BitPesa, which five countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania. Customers receive bitcoins and then convert it to local currencies by use of mobile money platforms. It offers its services at cheaper rates than traditional players such as Western Union and MoneyGram.
It is not a surprise that the use of bitcoin is on the increase in Africa.

People don't use banks there much. If they abandon their terrible fiat and rely on cryptos, that can lead to economic prosperity in the region.

Third world countries will also get the benefits of bitcoin and that only if anyone can apply it to their financial system. ;) :)

For now the use of bitcoin in Africa is not too large because infrastructure in countries like the internet is still not optimal, while the internet is a network that must be available to be able to use bitcoin. Besides that the education of the people in the interior has not been maximized so that knowledge about bitcoin is very minimal.
But for the next decade or for African countries with good economic growth, the use of bitcoin is growing rapidly, especially if the government issues regulations that allow bitcoin to be used for trade, investment and payment transactions.

There is no doubt that Africa is doing well in recent times regarding the use of Bitcoin as well as other altcoins. The problem I find is that we on our part are doing very little to the sell the blockchain technology to those who are alien to it. I see Africa as a part of the globe where many countries are struggling to have their fiat currency stable and therefore wouldn't have had a problem using bitcoin. We are on track although but it would be good if we could be a little faster.

It is a good decision from the Africa to embrace the bitcoin in their industry. It is a big help from them. I think those people coming from Africa especially from the town who have only a minimal progress. I think if they learn and if they master the right use of bitcoin as a payment system or most specially as a investment they can improve their life.

It's a great thing to know that bitcoin has been reaching every corner of the world. I didn't expect that it could reach Africa that fast and that it would adopt bitcoin that easy. Who would have thought that they are willing to accept the digital currency? It will surely be a big help for their economic growth.

Your analysis is right. I am a Nigerian and the truth is so many Nigerians currently are into bitcoin. Majority are into trading as they see it as a means of survival since no job. Bitcoin has made so many rich in my country Nigeria making so many youths to dive into investing in it and trading too. Though we can not for now buy any thing in my country with bitcoin, virtually almost everyone here owns some quantity of bitcoin.

From my opinion i concur they do have to use it in order to achieve a more internacional income thus making a more rich economy.

Those Bitcoin approaches will eventually produce not only profit for africans but as well as new technologies for helping their daily lives.
The money they get from it will surely help in producing advanced solutions for their health and maybe buying a new healthy life style products.

In Africa the most important problem is the number of inland areas that have not been touched by the internet, because of the heavy terrain and inadequate level of education. Africa is in the stage of improving development infrastructure towards progress.
So for now bitcoin is not popular in Africa, there are still very few users. But for the long term, for example, ten or twenty years into the future, I am sure that Africa will become a new continent with a good level of growth and advanced people, so the impact of using digital currencies is increasing. Bitcoin will keep up with progress in Africa.

In a nutshell, there are some barriers for the growth of crypto in Africa:
- Lack of Internet Connections.
- Low general level of Education.
- Internal conflicts (civil wars, for instance).
- Low level of income and lack of fundamental things of human lives.
However, as the fact of human civilization, where difficulties exist, there also have lots of gains in the future. People have to fight for their lives, and their efforts will make big changes. As the saying goes, "no pain, no gain". I strongly believe that the Africa continent will play important role in the crypto world map in the next coming decades.

There is no hindrance for everyone to adopt in crypto since it's decentralized and we can call this our own, unless your government will ban crypto.
Africa need, to my knowledge they have a high remittance fee but with bitcoin they can minimize it.
In addition, it will help them find opportunity online and accept bitcoin as payment.

Well, the population in Africa is really huge and if we exploit the use of crypto and bitcoin in this community, this will be a development step for the market but this very simple thought seems impossible because the level of education in Africa is too low, technology and people's access to technology is not too developed. And the governments of African countries are constantly improving this issue, but perhaps we will need a long time to see Africa start using crypto and bitcoin in a common way, the improvement is still too slow

Despite this fact, African governments still see bitcoin has illegal and no regulations or rules guiding it's activities and as a result, it's being labelled scam by mistake government. Not only African Governments sees btc and crypto in general as illegal activities and try as much as possible to restrict it's citizen's from engaging in it, other developed countries also have the same perception, since crypto don't have any regulations whatsoever they don't want citizens of their country to get involve because of their personal interest,

I think the awareness about crypto is increasing in Africa and i believe most major states and cities in each country don't have issue of infrastructure especially electricity so the question of not having access to internet is very minimal, this can only be found in the very remote areas.

Africa has a great enthusiasm for Bitcoin. The major problem here is that most of the indigenous people lack the basic knowledge in computing, technology and ICT, hence makes it difficult to explain the concept of Blockchain and Bitcoin to them. The elites are however supportive and I believe it will reach a greater spread if Bitcoin ATMs and more crypto community enter Africa. The merchants in Nigeria like the Cofred and Ecurrency4u are doing great work by offering a 24/7 crypto services to users.

Countries in the continent africa is embracing the blockchain technology and Bitcoin in their masses. In some countries the government of the day are showing some kind of support or interest fo :)r the new technology while others are advising their citizens not to use the cryptocurrency due to fear of fraudulent activities. I have taken my time, done some research plus the little knowledge I already have, made this thread to highlight the three ways Bitcoin is been used in Africa. They include;

[1]: Trading and investment:
Most citizens of countries in Africa like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kanye, South Africa etc have turned to Bitcoin as their recuse from poverty and others to increase their asset portfolio. According to the report carried out in August 2018, five (5) Africa countries where ranked among the Top 50 highest traders of Bitcoin on Localbitcoin exchange namely;

Here are some useful article you can read to convince you more;
Why Africa Is Fertile Ground for Bitcoin Adoption (https://www.ccn.com/why-africa-is-fertile-ground-for-bitcoin-adoption/amp)
Top 5 African Countries That Are Embracing Bitcoin (https://bitcoinafrica.io/2018/12/07/african-countries-embracing-bitcoin/)

I truly appreciate your way of sharing knowledge. Knowing this, it boosts my confidence that the crypto market can still be bullish. Because we are talking about bitcoin, majority of the coins will follow its trend and it will all be advertised. With that, I remind you to not only trade in bitcoin but also in other altcoins as well.

African countries have come a long way in terms of the distribution and use of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. Who told you that the Zimbabwean government is trying to encourage the usage of crypto? This is retarded logic. None of the governments around the world are "encouraging" the usage of crypto. If there is any encouragement, it is coming from the crypto-communities and not from the government. Anyway, crypto-usage levels remain quite low in Africa.

Bitcoins need merchants to accept it as a payment method just like we need oxygen to live. More and more merchants we get in the network the more and more we can defeat the physical currency. It's good to know that Africa is contributing some of its Merchants and taking some amount of risk towards virtual currencies.

For now, maybe African countries have not become a potential market for bitcoin trading. But for the future I am sure the African continent will become a potential market, because abundant natural resources will be used for the prosperity of its people.
When people in a country have prospered, it means that the purchasing power of bitcoin will be large because infrastructure such as the internet and the mastery of computer technology will become commonplace.

I think almost all countries except those that prohibit bitcoin, using bitcoin like that, it is very rare that bitcoin is used as a means of payment, only as an investment tool

Good for Africa that they are starting using crypto currency in larger sums on the continent, but there is still a long road ahead. African governments are very strict and centralizer, what is a clear signal bitcoin will have issues in being implemented on those countries.
On the other hand, Nigeria is becoming a crypto currency reference in Africa, as most news about adoption are coming from that country. If Nigeria really gets notoriety in crypto space towards Africa, it has great chances in becoming the most influent country of the continent.

Massive adoption of cryptocurrency in Africa will be a big boost because of the huge population and its exponential growth but governments of various countries are not supportive of this. Africans need to see digital currencies more as a medium of exchange, where it can be used to purchase commodities other than an investment where you buy at low prices and sell when the price goes up. More awareness campaigns are needed in this regard.

This accusations of yours is uncalled for and wrong in its entirety, how will you classify a country of over 180 mil people as scam loving individuals, Nigerians are hard working people and can fit into any organisation in any country of the world. Our contributions as a country to the worlds economy cannot be over emphasized both in human and mineral resources. Please, its better to treat issue instead of attacking a whole nation.

In some countries the government of the day are showing some kind of support or interest fo :)r the new technology while others are advising their citizens not to use the cryptocurrency due to fear of fraudulent activities. I have taken my time, done some research plus the little knowledge I already have, made this thread to highlight the three ways Bitcoin is been used in Africa. They include;

[1]: Trading and investment:
Most citizens of countries in Africa like Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kanye, South Africa etc have turned to Bitcoin as their recuse from poverty and others to increase their asset portfolio. According to the report carried out in August 2018, five (5) Africa countries where ranked among the Top 50 highest traders of Bitcoin on Localbitcoin exchange namely;

Here are some useful article you can read to convince you more;

Top 5 African Countries That Are Embracing Bitcoin (https://bitcoinafrica.io/2018/12/07/african-countries-embracing-bitcoin/)

this was one of the reasons i invested in crypto in the first place, becuse i was told it was one of satoshis visions to level the playing field with a new currency so africa and other poor continents and countries could invest in something new to get a new chance at getting out of poverty.

There are more usage opportunities of Bitcoin in Africa if the African's will stand in one and accept the cryptocurrency to boost their economy and make them buoyant. Africans' problems are from their ground Fathers, hope they will embrace the technology and move faster with the tech for a better eye opener.

I really impressed with Africa and Africa government is very great, because they do accept the bitcoin, it meant, the government want that their people use bitcoin and crypto currency and promote it and in this wise, the other governments will see it and their learnt from Africa and may be and hopefully they will be do something like Africa's government to allow their people to use crypto currency and earn from it.

I have always believed that African leaders will embrace this new technology. Digitization unlike the 20th century is gaining a deep root in Africa nowadays. This is not Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and co are not the only countries. I know a country like Ghana which is advancing in the acceptance of bitcoin.

Africans accepts and adopt to things so easily as far as it's useful and beneficial to her citizens..It's lovely to see Nigerians embracing cryptocurrency and topping other African countries towards investment alhough their government is not really in support of it. That's to show you how Nigerians are in support of crypto to excel

Wow! Didn't know about this! I mean it is strange for this continent to have this kind of action but a good thing to know that they did. This will really help them considering their countries didn't have a good condition and having an investment to bitcoin will surely contribute in helping them developed! Happy to see these countries embrace cryptocurrencies! Good luck to them!

Actually, the Africa government has done many projects like an adaptation of the use of cryptocurrency, it's a great opportunity for them to take part in this modern technology and market. Countries from 3rd world countries will learn that cryptocurrency will give a boost to their economy. We should be progressive each year, adaptation on what's the modern should be constant because if there's a huge gap, we the people will suffer into this.

Like now, countries like US and China have different payment systems that we should imitate for us to have transactions and negotiations with other people on different countries that will develop our economy.

Recently I've read an interesting article from Reuters about Bitcoin standing and usability in Africa. A lot of interviewed bitcoin users from the five countries said the cryptocurrency was helping people make their businesses nimbler and more profitable. I think it's great when a digital currency can make your life a little bit easier.

Africa's use of bitcoin shoot up up to this year than any other country. Mainly because they use it for buying goods. Also, the cryptocurrency in Africa is legal than what other countries offer that they should ban using crypto because of certain things or maybe personal issues of the government. Africa is one of the poor country all over the world yet they are the ones who are embracing the advancement of technology with cryptocurrency so fast. Meanwhile, in Asia still it is not recommended to use it after all.

yes, this is a phenomenal progress that actually occurs in the crypto field, that a country with a majority of its population is still shrouded in poverty but the development of bitcoin is actually accommodated to be used as a legal medium of exchange. For me it is quite surprising because it is clear that poverty can be guaranteed that there will be a gap away from technology, especially with crypto trading in which there is bitcoin which is used as a legal medium of exchange.

Isn't there anything strange has happened with something like this !!! Obviously, of course very confusing, is bitcoin a legal medium of exchange but its use is of course only limited to people who have a lot of money and we know that in African countries many rich people also come from oil mines such as Nigeria, is this one of the things to make it easier or something? other?
can only ask without anyone being able to know ...

I always see African countries pioneering and and publicizing innovative projects like this. They always impress me with the way they work to make money. Africa 's apparent poverty may have catalyzed this drive of people to succeed which in turn directs them to great ways to earn money such as bitcoin.

Africa is in a much lower position than other countries because most people in Africa are poor their per capita income is so low that it hinders their development. The use of Bitcoin in Africa will improve their country and meet the needs of the poor by tackling their financial problems. The use of bitcoin in Africa to improve the poor is great as the economy improves, they will be able to meet their basic human needs.

I heard African people are confronting neediness and the enormous measure of individuals are powerless and they're looking for somebody to help them, they don't have anything eat and nothing to wear.
If the government makes a move concerning the utilizing of bitcoin, at that point they can improve their economy in a day's.
Bitcoins can improve destitution individuals are procuring more than their compensations with bitcoin, at that point why government not?.
African government ought to acknowledge the bitcoins and use them to improve the economy.

Based on my understanding, Over half of the nations in Africa are considered the poorest in the world than the other six continents around the world because they have a bad government just like in other developing countries. So it might be the reason why it is impossible for the African government to recognize the uses of bitcoin in their country. However, it is still a good thing that most people in Africa are using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that they are into with this technology for them to get out of poverty and have a good life.

i don't know where these ideas on Africa and African nations comes from and it seriously amazes me. It feels very insulting to have the notion that the African people have nothing to eat or wear and are constantly in need of help! its very savaging and be littling description that i fined very discomforting. It surprises me still, how little the rest of the world knows of Africa and the African people. All that is to their awareness is that which have been fed to them through movies, African wild life documentary, a piece of literature and some inside Africa headline news; that portrays Africans as a continent with mainly farming, fishing and hunting population, these are done even in the US in both large and small scales.

The Americans have got animal documentary too Wild Alaska, the Russians have got Wild Russia documentary and that doesn't make any of them savages so, why should Africa be any different. The African continent is one of the best in the world for a vacation and still gets lots of tourist still.

The African continent and it's people are way past such savagery stage of human existence. I am an African and a proud one at that along with my people. We might be a developing world but then its a transition that could have been better and speedy should there be little or no corruption amongst its political ranks. That's the major problem of Africa, not what to eat or wear. The African people have got labor force and raw materials for exploitation but the policies that exists in African nations has made us a more consuming population rather than a producing one. The only thing we often produce are raw materials that comes back to us as finished products. For this reason, Africa has become more of a global market for dump of finished products and exportation of raw materials. Its all in the corrupt practices.

Looking at the bitcoin or cryptocurrency statistics presented in OP, showcasing African as one of the leading population in crypto acceptance and investment only shows how way past the African continent is way past a savagery existence and are speedily catching up with the rest of the world. It might seem slow but, Africa and Africans will catch up some day.

kind Regards

Nigeria, Africa's largest economy, ranked number one for 'countries that use cryptocurrencies the most'. This was while the country plunged deep into a recession in 2020.

In fact, the trade volume of Bitcoin in Nigeria from 2020 reached 400 million U.S. dollars, which is just 20 million below Russia’s 420 million. Sadly, the sub-Saharan African country’s government clamped down on cryptocurrency exchanges, with an indefinite ban on cryptocurrency exchange operations across the country.

Also, in another exciting state, Kenya was ranked the 5th nation in the world with the most cryptocurrency adoption from 2020. In that ranking, Kenya came right behind China and ahead of the United States. South Africa also came 7th on the list.

Beyond Africa, cryptocurrency adoption and trade volume has been relatively bullish in parts of the world with oppressive economic regimes reign, which leaves the people from those parts of the world in doubt of their economy. Many believe this to be a big motivating factor in the growth of cryptocurrency in places like Africa and even Latin America.

For instance, in another analysis of Nigeria’s Crypto phenomenon, high cost in transactions, along with a huge arbitrage in diaspora remittances, all account for the country’s switch to cryptocurrency.

The usage rate of Bitcoin has slowly increased, but the usage rate in Africa is higher than that in other places.
Large countries generally advocate the use of their own currency. If all bitcoins are used, it will cause inflation in the country, so the use of bitcoins in other regions is not very high.
Everyone just invests more in Bitcoin.

Africa can become the prefect playground of cryptocurrency. I could list out several factors, such as inadequate banking coverage, huge middle-men commissions on remittance transfers.etc. IMO, they need a trigger. Here in India, the trigger came in the form of demonetization exercise of November 2016. A lot of people found that they are unable to use a large part of their unaccounted funds. Those who kept their funds in physical cash, due to distrust of banks were most affected. Immediately there was a huge spike in P2P platforms from India. The trade volumes went up by 10-20 times in a month. And the userbase has increased in India ever since that incident. I guess in Africa also, they need something similar.

The increase of Crypto currency in Africa is growing vastly, the African's actually do not take chances,so this is a great opportunity for them  to achieve great fortune.
Despite the banned in some African countries and the government trying to hoard Information about Crypto currency,it has grown massively over the years.

Africa is a promising region for crypto, so I am glad that the crypto industry is developing on this continent.
- This hot African land devotes their energies only to minerals and can call raw minerals a typical African brand, except for these rare things, it does not promise an economic potential for the use of bitcoin and crypto, especially the resident element, they seem to be born to be people who seek resources and aspire to get rich on their land. However, the government and the law here as far as I understand they are not rigid and somewhat flexible in terms of opportunity as well as the possibility of delinquency, a primitive environment for the use of bitcoin if the inhabitants of Africa are well integrated

The aim of the development of Bitcoin is to reduce the stress that is being undergo in the banking system for one to get money out and in of the bank. The aim of Bitcoin is to make transactions more easier for traders and investors to carry out as the same time been anonymous. If African tend to adopt Bitcoin faster than other region of the world with good reasons, then that's good for them and there is need for more acceptance of Bitcoin into the business sector.

But in all it's good to note Africans aren't left behind in this era of digital monetary transactions disregarding how it's been spent or use provided the essence of it's development is not abused

Nigeria is leading the baton to crypto adoption in Africa. Nigerians are interested in cryptocurrency, despite the challenges we face in the country. We are innovative, Nigerians have even got our own crypto....cryptocurrencies created by Nigerians not CBDC. Example is Tatcoin created by Gaius Chibueze aka Bitcoin chief; HaggleX coin created by Samuel Joseph, also a Nigerian born and bred. These are a few examples to show the development of crypto industry in Nigeria.

Too bad that they're government doesn't support crypto not knowing that they're the biggest in the African continent in terms of crypto adoption. I hope that that stance against crypto will change someday and hopefully they will be able to get the benefits out of supporting crypto instead of just outright opposing it.

True the government isn’t supporting the crypto industry in Nigeria but they are not condemning it either. Fintech  companies are supporting the Nigerian government by providing jobs for youths, empowerment programs, sponsoring tv shows like Big brother Nigeria (BBN)...Patricia is a proud sponsor of that show, let’s not forget the COVID-19 project by one of our own CryptopreneurBrainboss who made a mission to feed 50+ families in Nigeria.

Development of digital currency during this time can be of great benefit to the citizens of Africa which is also at the process of development. Addressing the infrastructure problems is one of the steps to make Africa better since infrastructures connect and build opportunities. However, i think there is much larger issue that needs to be resolved such as addressing the needs of the citizens which is having the basic necessities they need in order to survive.

Africa is rich in natural resources but despite this, this continent is still considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world. If only they would know how to utilize the resources they have, they would improve for sure. What they need to do is to make use of what they have in a good manner and eliminate corrupt and close minded politicians. The officials should be strategic and open minded about cryptocurrencies so that the citizens can make use of all the opportunities it offer. Of course, the legality of crypto in a country is still in the hands of the officials. If they aren't against it, the citizens can enjoy the limitless possibilities and opportunities without the fear of being looked after by the law.
