The advent of Bitcoin's blockchain technology has opened up a world of possibilities that were never imagined. People can finally achieve financial freedom by being their own bank anytime, anywhere. In 2017, there was the ICO boom where crypto land was filled with hype with many companies launching their own business ventures. Everything has been about smart contracts, on-chain privacy, and Blockchain-based gaming. But ever since prices started to decline back in 2018, there has been a lost of interest into crypto and Blockchain tech from people in the mainstream world.

It's now 2020, where many exciting events are yet to come. Bitcoin will experience another reduction in its block reward (halving), while Ethereum becomes closer to adopting PoS into its blockchain network. The space is definitely maturing, but the level of demand is still a lot less than it was back in 2017.

Nonetheless, I'm curious to know what's the next big thing in crypto? ???

The lost interest of crypto in 2018 make a better come back in 2019 with better embracement from banks and big companies, the level of demand will eventually increase this year since crypto is spreading fast, many sees 2019 as another failure year because altcoins fail to rise again but crypto is breaking chains that are once impossible year's back

Bitcoin halving on the May 2020 is going to be the next big thing for sure and I hope the process of accumulating bitcoin already started from the beginning of 2020,we can see some big green candles which might convince investors to hold their coins which will further boost up the prices and if everything goes right then prices will starts boom after block reward halving.

The crypto backed by the gov't or by the banks. The known CBDC or Central Bank Digital Currency.
This is now the main thing in China lately and I think US and other powerful countries will also follow the trend for this. Once this has already been implemented in China and it's being used by most citizens, I think most of the countries that are looking into cryptocurrency will start to follow that path.

Well, that would be a mystery to us. i have no prediction prediction about what next happen , even that two events you says will give a big positive for crypto space,i am sure about it.
since the first time, halving bitcoin never make dissapointment and also the next thing from ETH,it will give a good opportunity i guess. even celebrity crypto such as ian balena have a crazy prediction about ETH 2.0.

The next thing in crypto in my opinion will be a wallet which will support to pay via NFC technology like we pay with card today to pay directly with phone from crypto wallet. Will not be more easy and more secure?

There will be a lot of next big thing in the crypto

- Libra's development progress and blockchain implementation
- Digital cash created by the government
- Result of the TON's case with regulator
- Mimble wimble litecoin and bitcoin

I just expect more to come as the developers in the crypto are still running their development progress properly. The big thing can come from the various parties and I think almost the pair to the all of fiats money will available in the future.

I wont say 2019 is a disappointment but truth is it was very rough and mostly nothing pickup any speed like before though we are getting stability we are still stagnating between one point to another no much seem to be going on for now Hopefully that changes in 2019

Of course, bitcoin halving is clear.
But, more important and interesting is that I hope that in 2020 there will be more implementations in real life such as for example, school payments with bitcoin, public vehicles that are paid for using bitcoin and many others. Things like this that I wait for the future so that the adoption of bitcoin is faster and better.

I feel we have achieved a lot in 2017 this is the year where big and real projects surfaced, that is why the last two years gives hard time for projects who are deemed good, honestly, I have no idea what would be the next big thing this year, because of so many unexpected things that happen, that leaves us glued daily online, but I still believe new algos are coming like the one I discover recently IDENA  a proof of person algo.

If games figure out a way to make an idiot proof way to adopt non fungible tokens, those will be a huge boost for eth, and the next big thing. But currently that's so fringe concept that even some crypto people haven't been paying attention towards it. So real world adoption could still be far away.

More adoption of Bitcoin and Ethereum should happen this year. Plus I think we will see a few lesser known altcoins  find a niche as a useful coin.

I think there's no big thing in crypto world 2020, the achievement in 2018 - 2019 is more than enough. Halving and new project is just like event, release happen and gonna. I'm not pessimist but there's time crypto should take a break and reorganize system and purposes. It just private opinion and I hope even stagnant there new proof crypto survive more longer and give more benefits for ours as crypto users.

Even it looks like a rough and the price is a little bit low but it was just a great year compared to 2018. The price moves up and down but we end up at strong $7,300 which is not really bad.
This year might be interesting because of many market events that could twist the market flows. Yes, bullish will always be in our insights and hopefully it will come true.

We know that we have felt the glory of bitcoin in 2017 is all focused on bitcoin at that time because many people consider bitcoin to be the best investment and could possibly replace our money in transactions.
Now that we are in 2020 we think positively at the beginning of the year we have received a price of $ 7300 bitcoin and this will be further increased, especially in this year many large projects that have not yet developed their goals hopefully this will happen this year and will see how many adopt this year.

Bitcoin halving will happened on May 2020 but eth migration to POS still not sure if occurring this 2020 but I'm sure they probably rushing out and preparing everything for it.

None of us know what will happened but Im sure everyone here wanted the market to go back to the time of 2017 bull run. Anyway let's just hold first our btc and eth until their prime event occured already and see whether the result of holding is worth it.

in 2020 there will be a lot of big things happening besides bitcoin halving day, namely:
1. libra facebook will be officially released in 2020
2. ethereum will also launch eth version 2.0, hopefully this launch will make investors interested in investing in ethereum again and make ethereum prices go up.
3. And some social media applications also plan to make their own crypto such as telegram with TON, LINE with line network and KakaoTalk with Katlyn. I hope these big things will have a positive impact on the price and development of cryptocurrency.

end of 2017 to 2019 has been a very bad year for crypto, because of a falling market and many developing ICO scams.
and big events are also needed to make the market recover. Major events such as Halving bitcoin and the Launch of ethereum 2.0 will be the most anticipated event in 2020. hopefully can improve the current state of the crypto market.

I was there during the hype of the ICO and surely being a bounty hunter is profitable those days even back then.
But now, there are lesser people who are investing with them.

Some say it might the ETH 2.0 which will get the most hype.

Honestly it is hard to give prediction. It is also hard to assume that this is the right time for bitcoin and eth. All we know that crypto price is always matter in all of us but always remember that we need an additional plan and option in case that it will not happen. And I know that all of us are hoping for the huge price increase in this year 2020.

it's still a long time there's still time in february and we will see demand that may not be unstoppable ,crypto can go rises very fast regarding prices so I don't need to worry like last year's bearish ,ethereum 2.0 is indeed not yet stable but we will also see prices increase by investors later

maybe he only foccus on other majority alts and not only on a single altcoin . like him i dont always aware that some altcoin increase because i only check my own portfolio and all i can see is reds   but its nice to hear it from you that litecoin increase some good percent    .  20 usd to 140 usd by last year  ? woah that was already alot for just an altcoin but ltc is not just an altcoin  . ltc was a mainstream coin and i know that ltc still lots of potential and can rise higher than 140 usd  .

I am also with the expectations about the 3 points that you have indicated. Above all, the point of the official release of Libra facebook that has been reviewed and analyzed in many specialized blog articles. 2020 will bring major changes in the crypto space without a doubt. There are those who agree with the project as others who do not. I can only say that I have loved cryptography from day one. Many things have changed since the creation of Bitcoin and I agree with Libra that "Innovation and regulation can live in harmony".

Next big thing in crypto is Bitcoin. Altcoins, blockchain technology, tokens, smart contracts, dapps - they will fade away in this new decade, with only Bitcoin remaining. Bitcoin halving is the next big thing for sure. I have no hope for Ethereum 2.0 release nor in Libra or TON anymore. Dapps, Defi, Crypto smartphones, Dex are the next big thing in this decade! The next big thing on crypto is the halving that will happen this April - May 2020. But I think it will take effect on 2021. The price of bitcoin will for surely gonna rise up because the supply of the bitcoin will be half. That is gonna be a good thing and it will for surely help the community to grow. The market that time will be green for sure.

I think that we'll just see a wave of institutional adoption in 2020 as opposed to any real new innovations. This is due to the fact that there were simply so much institutional interest at the start of 2019, with a bunch of investment banks expressing their willingness to dabble in the crypto markets.

That means that I think large caps will likely benefit more from the bull run rather than innovative ICOs, which can be seen to be more risky.

But the one area that I think will be of interest could potentially be IoT, dominated currently by IOTA and IOST. Especially with the slim to none transaction fees and the scalability promises.

Personally, I want to say that cryptocurrency has made big changes in life. And now, when cryptocurrency is very much introduced into the community, new technologies have appeared. And also large companies have created unique business projects. I read somewhere that it was the halving of Bitcoin in 2016 that gave birth to the new money entry into cryptocurrency in 2017 in pursuit of ROI (they achieved this). However, it was a sad experience though that those who made the ROI never ploughed the money back into the industry. Rather they took out the money and invested elsewhere and that demoralized the market - leading to its crash. It shouldn't be a gloom this year. The next big thing that I can think of is the coming Facebook coin Libra and China's coin that both are going to launch this year, what could be bigger than this, than two of the most powerful entity online and offline adopting Bitcoin and will try to be one of its main players in the industry.

The next big thing which is on the way is Mass adoption, Crypto is not just about prices and trading it is about making things better with a fair and decentralized system. So, for me, only a big thing would be MASS ADOPTION.

If you're talking about crypto in general, I think it could be the emergenec of corporate-based tokens.

I think that in the near future companies are going to start to issue their own tokens on their own blockchain infrustructure to potentially aid in the efficiency of their database and internal transactions between clients and the business itself, for example. These tokens aren't necessarily going to be cryptocurrencies but are based on blockchain nonetheless.

Don't count too much on projects like Libra or central bank projects though, as I don't see much value in either.

I don't believe there will be a single event as such that will help bring more mass adoption, but China moving forward with their digital RMB and their President making sure Blockchain is widely accepted, will usher in an era of more mainstream adoption. Although the currency is centralized, the fact that it brings awareness to the blockchain, may open the doors to more investment in decentralized currencies and projects as well. More payment gateways, infrastructure, unbanked people gettign roped into the economy and IOT will do the trick. Smart cities and IOT will rope in everyone.

The biggest thing is Bitcoin halving, I believe Bitcoin will hit top price and volume after it. Last year 2019 Bitcoin pumped but altcoins was silent. So second thing is proof of stalking program on Ethereum blockchain after Ethereum 2.0. Has probability for those this yea, Bitcoin halving is during Q2 and Q4 for Ethereum 2.0.

Mass adoption will not easily happen if the people owning Bitcoin cannot spend them in shopping centers, coffee shops, hotels, resorts, restaurants, and more commercial and business establishments.

Before altcoins came out as alternative cryptocurrencies to Bitcoin, Bitcoin was already there as an alternative currency to fiat. Bitcoin was created as a payment tool. Bitcoin should be used first in payment before considering altcoins.

   I can't agree more with that statement. This is a big thing that we are waiting for, more people to abandon sinking bank system,
decreasing their share and influence, and on other side to increase the use of Blockchain in all areas. All thous this is not a big
thing that will happen one day, it's a slow process that can last for years. We need to be patient and wait for that!

Well it will be really hard for us to spend bitcoin oftenly to buy some stuff because the initial thinking of us is to invest it and not spend it because of the fear of losing some big opportunities when bitcoin pumps up. Well that is before but now bitcoin has a really big value so spending it or using it as a payment is like a wrong move for every crypto enthuasist so altcoins are really the best choice. Same as you I think in 2020 price of bitcoin and altcoins will get high as now a day because of New year, New hopes people bought so much bitcoin and we know the more people buy Bitcoin the more its price will rise and it will be more profitable so in think in February or March we will see bullish market,  it’s just my predictions and let's see what happens.

We do not need to find next big thing. Blockchain is already the revolutionary technology for digital finances, digital identity and digital property and what is the best? The technology is decentralized and immutable. We do not need to apply blockchain technology for everything as many startups think.

In my opinion, the interest of the public in cryptocurrency around the year 2017 was majorly because of the swift increase in value of the coin market cap. Several persons were only interested in taking their share of the cake. Since the market is bearish, they are not encouraged as there's no money to be made through ICO's and other hussles.

So far the initial signals are good. Till now, Bitcoin has gained some 10% as far as the exchange rates against USD is concerned. Bank is the institution and blockchain is a core system and i can call that as a protocol that has already created to made the system will be more effective and efficient. There is no reason to erase the bank because blockchain will also be used on the bank too. I don't think that will happen soon.

I learnt that there's underground work ongoing to launch the ethereum 2.0 project this year. The bitcoin halving is also expected to be in motion and I'm of the opinion that this events would affect the overall performance of the market. The launching of libra coin could also happen this year marking this year, possibly more promising than last year.

You have a good point for that opinion my dear. But their plans are only for their country? What will happen on decentralize? or it will became a semi-decentralize because its all by controlled of the government. And some other fans will also follow them, That will only a federal style.

I am also do excited about what will be th next thing about the crypto currency market specially we are already into the new year within put calendars. For sure, our hearts are overwhelming with expectations and hopes that this year 2020 will open up and trigger a prosperous run for the whole crypto community. It is a good start this year for the crypto market in which we are talking about the rising of the price of Bitcoin which from the downfall last year 2019 wherein price mark is near $6,500 have reached up a hype as of the moment at $9,000 and still into rising. What most people are talking about this year is the upcoming Bitcoin halving which is said to trigger the rise of price of Bitcoin. But, even the halving was a couple of month ago from now, Bitcoin have already showcased a hype in the price which means that we will expect more to come once the halving was done and have taken its after effect which we are all expecting to be favorable on our part bringing not just Bitcoin but the whole cryptocurrency industry to the hype which includes Altcoins as well.

The Bitcoin halving could be the biggest thing to happen in crypto right now. I've seen how prices started to rise by the beginning of 2020. This could be an indicator that Bitcoin could head towards $10k per coin by May, while other altcoins will become much more valuable than what they are right now. Ethereum will also bring new and exciting things to the crypto space as it fully integrates ZK-SNARKS and switches from PoW to PoS. With all the exciting events that are bound to happen this year, it's believed that demand for popular cryptocurrencies on the market will rise like never before.

Honestly, I do not know which ‘big thing’ to expect. The past year did not disappoint me, but I did not have the pleasure to see the impact of any big crypto-related achievement. Nevertheless, crypto trading is one of the main sources of my income, so I will keep on investing in it.

It is good of you to remain in faith in cryptos because it will be rewarded. While things are moving rather slowly in terms of development and innovation, more people are becoming aware of the benefits crypto provides relative to Fiat. Yes, already we have seen many companies launch their security token which they are not surviving in the market. Of course, through regulation, we might easily find out the fake ICO's but we don't know whether a security token might influence a lot in the cryptocurrency.

Good point. It all depends on the specific company's vision in other to increase the adoption of its token within the mainstream world. If there's no development, innovation, or real use cases for the world, then I'm afraid STOs will fail the same way as ICOs did back in 2017. Still though, we cannot deny that STOs are much more regulated than ICOs. In this regard, companies are obliged to fulfil their promises within the tokens they've issued or they'll face fines from the government itself. With ample regulation of the crypto/Blockchain industry, there's a possibility that STOs could become the next big thing in the mainstream world. If successful, STOs could replace traditional IPOs as we know them.

But I'd say that it will take a long time before STOs are widely adopted by mainstream businesses, companies, and investors alike. The reason why people come into Bitcoin investment is just because they'll saw a growing market and its profitability. May gaining assurance isn't at 100% due to its volatility but if have a record on it, it for sure the majority have to make money rather than of those who lose.

Yep I think you're right, I have waited so long for a moment like this especially for the altcoin that I hold. Because at the end of 2018 I was a little frustrated to see the price of crypto that touched ATL but there were still many people and communities who told me to believe if a bullish moment would occur.

Plenty of things can happen as a next big thing in crypto. My personal bets are:
1. Real dapps get their real adoption. Many people don’t see it, cause such projects usually don’t get much traction. But when they do, we can see SNX from 5 to 150mil in a couple months. And I’m not talking about SNX here, cause it’s been mostly a pnd, but still a real adoption led to that pnd, not just worthless hype or news. There are plenty of projects, slowly developing and acquiring customers base. Still, they have almost zero traction in crypto world and almost never followed by crypto community. Why? Cause they spend their money developing their real business. And crypto related marketing usually brings unnecessary hype, followed by pnd. And real projects don’t need that. Ask any CEO who want to really develop his business if he wants his stock to be pumped and dumped then. I believe no one tell you he wants that thing to happen. Instead he’ll want to have a steady business growth. Real customers. Real cash flowing into his business, by providing worthy services or goods. Tokens aren’t stocks. But for crypto projects it’s usually the only reflection of their inner value. So I’m in such projects, who’ve built their solution during those 2 years since ICO, now slowly acquiring customers base who pays real money, generating revenue, which reflects in a slow tokens price growth, cause of buybacks and burns. Check such things as BCDT, VRA, VIDT and others with such approach. Buybacks/burns. Ready to use solution which can benefit real world. Paying customers. Licenses. I believe many, if dig deep in those will see how far we are now in terms of real adoption since 2017;
2. BTC massive adoption as store of value. I’ve already said that and will say it again. As for its inner qualities, BTC right now is the best SOV in existence. Government currencies could replace cash. But those will never change gold or other SOVs. If one country decide to emit its own crypto cash, that’s gonna be just its own national currency. But with more control over it from the government. Pretty similar to xrp, iota and other completely centralized coins. You should ask yourself, would you really use a coin, which can be completely eradicated from your account by let’s say China, if you’re US government? I seriously doubt it. Such currencies can really change cash on inner market. But those will never become a world currency or a new gold standard, cause they’d belong and gonna be controlled by a single entity. Completely opposite to BTC or gold, or most other SOVs;
3. Technological breakthroughs. Will we see ETH staying decentralized and have it’s current qualities with its new POS thing? Time will tell. But I believe if it’s gonna be the same old ETH, decentralized and secure, with 1-10k tps, that will bring new big opportunities to the whole crypto universe.

Agree. DEXs will have a hard time complying with regulations imposed by governments worldwide. We've seen how these entities have gone against Bitcoin mixers with the excuse that these services are used for money laundering. The same thing could happen with DEXs that don't require ID verification (KYC/AML) from their users.
