So I'm from the US.  But i travel quite a bit and am outside the US majority of the time.  My seed is stored online.   I do have my hardware wallet nano ledger s with me though.  Now I didn't want to bring my seed with me when traveling because well imagine something happens at customs and my bags get searched... well what if customs search through my stuff and then see a paper with my seed.  And of course there is a chance they know what it is and can write it down etc.  I heard many examples of those workers stealing from luggage, so imagine a search and then they see piece of paper and its words and they know what crypto is.  But that is rare of course.  




But when i travel abroad, I don't want to have my seed in the apartment as I don't think that is safe.  Where im located, there is lot of breakins... thats how it is here.  Thief would take electronics and wallet etc.  Doesn't matter what neighborhood you are in... its like this here and very common.  So people that say move... well most places are like this.  Even places that has security.  And because of this, i left my seed back in the US.  I mean look even in those rich places in california, you have breakins etc.




Now what I'm curious is for those of you who travel or move... how do you bring your seed with you?  Obviously if you are moving to somewhere else in the same state, well you can drive there with it so no big deal.  But what if you are traveling from say florida to los angeles?  Or florida all the way to canada or europe?  I mean having the seed with you written on a piece of paper when traveling when flying got to make you all nervous right?

Now i think a good solution is leave your seed in a safe deposit box... but do it at two different banks.  Thus your seed would have half the seed in one bank, and half in another. 




But what happens when you leave the state and move to another state or another country?  Well obviously you are going to bring your seed with you since you won't go to that bank anymore.  I mean you going to have you seed written a few times broken in pieces and in your wallet during your entire trip?




So I always felt like storing your seed online was a safe way as long as you encrypt it.  Thus imagine you type your seed in a program like lastpass or keepass... then upload it to the cloud like dropbox or google drive.  So in order to access it... you need your google or dropbox email password.... then you need your lastpass/keepass password in order to access it.  So that way, you don't have to worry about anything physical happening... since you store it digitally.



But of course you risk getting hacked as I read so many cases of people putting their seed online in like facebook or wordpad and not encrypt it.  And of course just typing it in their email and saving it as a word document where there is no protection against it if your email get hacked.  But if you encrypt it the way i described... would that be safe?  That way... you dont need to worry about breakins, fires, natural disasters happening etc?



I gotta wonder how some of you travel or move when you do this especially if you are leaving your state or country where you need to fly.

What do you mean by storing your seed online ? You're getting my pulse racing ! To me that's where a seed should never be. It should be in a safe, physical place.

For traveling, I could see several options. For example having the words in several chunks, one bit in your wallet (the one with the fiat I mean), one bit as an encrypted file on your smartphone, one bit on an encrypted file on a USB key.

But to be honest a hardware wallet is enough for me, I don't really envision the need to have my seed always with me.

The most secure method is to commit your seed to your own memory, this way it can only be stored if you are forced to reveal it under some threat. But this method is also dangerous, because human memory is so unreliable.

You could hide you seed inside the pages of a book - unless you're on some watchlist, border officials aren't going to look too much into your stuff. Theoretically, anyone who will carefully search your stuff will find this seed, but on practice this should be good enough.

Well, you could try doing it like those spy flick movies if you really really want to be secured. Write a diary maybe, put random stuff BUT put the first letters as your seed. Up to you how to actually do it, it may be a bunch of random numbers in a book, a diary as I said, or something else, just remember that the first letters should be your seed and remember when it ends. A simpler version would be like what you said, split it into two, but bring it with you, no need to store it at different banks. You can create multiple versions of codes that have your seed hidden so that when one goes poof, you at least have backup AND you at least have the certainty that no one would identify that your seed was leaked since it's hidden in a code only you should know.

One way is to store hidden text in an image file.

This hidden text can be encrypted before storing in the picture. Ten keep several pictures on an USB.

Save in a removable storage device like USB or even bynuaing cellphones and make sure to make some back up like physical hand written to a paper and keep it in the wallet. We know the probable problems that could occur and that might be losing the seed phrase and this is why a back up must be needed in order to access fund even one of the seed phrase kept losses. Make sure to transfer into another wallet if bitcoin seedphrase loses.

For your sake I hope that at least it's in an encrypted file or it is itself encrypted. If you get malware on the device used to access your seed you could lose your funds.


Then don't bring the seed with you, or at least not unless it's somehow encrypted.

I will tell you what I'm using, you will decide is it good for you.

Custom seed - I picked up a public domain book and my feed is the X word from page Y, X+1 & Y+1, etc. Thus my seed is always online, always accessible through the internet and yet always hidden.

No need of encryption or anything, it's saved only in my head.

So it's a custom scheme at picking words for a brainwallet that you have come up with. I would advise others against such ideas with no dead man's switch if they have anyone they'd like to inherit their coins in the event of death. It also sounds predictable enough that someone with a lot of time on their hands may eventually stumble on your brainwallet.

You should consider this seed already compromised and move your funds to cold storage ASAP.

You don't need to carry both the seed and the hardware wallet, there is just no point in it. Seed in this case is only used for the recovery in case the hardware wallet was lost or damaged,...
As for the customs searching your bags, they do that and I have heard they can confiscate your hardware wallet.

Truly dangerous. Just like for me, my memory is no longer sharp, and barely remember things such as words and private keys individually. I've watched a series that have a protagonist to have the best memory and being intelligent.

If one can trust his memory and mind, this is an amazing method. But again, for people like me, could lead to burning those coins.

I would avoid putting it on cloud storage. The traditional method is still the best for me like writing it down but with a twist, not with a paper. Like metal or embroidered into your socks or handkerchief or cloth. What do you think of that?

Did you just you store your seeds online? That's very risky because of hacking. Best ways is to write them down and store them in a very safe place. What you can do is to get a USB drive for just the purpose of storing the seeds but not can't be 100% relied on. Another thing is to use an hardware wallet or steel plates. I'd say it's risky taking your seeds around with you.

OP, set up a separate "travelling wallet", and memorize your seed words. It's easy. If you're too lazy, then save it in a keychain-USB drive, and encrypt it.

It is a better choice if you save it at home even during traveling, or could hand it over to someone you trust. If you do need to store with yourself then find out a way to store your keys in a way that can only be understood by you. Guess you will have to figure it out by yourself.

You should be using encryption, particularly if you store a copy of your seed online. That way, theft of your seed won't automatically result in loss of your bitcoins.

You could type your seed in a plain text document, then encrypt it with password protection. You could also physically store your seed words in a way -- or in multiple parts -- where only you would be able to recognize and reconstruct them. If you leave them written down as a 12-word seed, there's a decent chance someone will recognize them as such.


Having multiple encrypted digital copies solves all issues. Just make sure to a create a system where you'll never forget or lose your encryption key.

I'm thinking this to be the most reliable way of carrying your seed when you are travelling but I realized that I don't have a sharp memory already and I can forget the seeds in an instant or after a few days.

Its really hard to pick which is the most reliable way to carry your seed when travelling because it will depend on you. Some might wrote it in a paper and kept it so no one will know it. Some are just memorizing it etc. On my part, putting in a encrypted flash drive is the one that I'm using and I'm using 2 flash drives to make it more secured.

P.S. I just thought that making a sentence using the seed would help too what do you think :D.

You can create a PGP public address and encrypt the keys  to yourself and decrypt them afterwards since it can only be decrypted by you I think that is another way to be safe out there.

IMO this is even harder than just brute-force combining every the possible allowed word in the dictionary. There are millions of free public domain books online (https://lifehacker.com/access-millions-of-free-books-added-to-the-public-domai-1837073153, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain).

It is easy to remember the seed if you are always using it. The question is, how many times in a year are we using our seed? As for me, I cannot remember the last time I made use of my 24-word seed. Truth be told, I cannot even remember a single word from it.

I travel often and I am just carrying my seed with me on a small piece of scratch paper inside my wallet. I think it is not the safest way, though. I'm just a little confident that if my wallet gets lost or taken, nobody would understand what those words are for, at least in this part of the world. But now I think I should at least have them written on 4 different pieces of paper, 6 words per piece.

Actually I undesrtand the idea of yours. I also didn't remembered or even memorized my own seed. We all need to admit rhat it is truly hard to memorized it so we definitely need some othwr ways to save it or to remebered it because it is a very long words. For me, I carry my seeds thrpugh my phone. I used some app like notepad or even some textpad that had some private key or pincode in order to secure it. Writing it on a piece of paper is good but what will happen if that piece of paper lost? You need some back up. Social media is one also of the choices. Like putting it in a chatbox on ypurself in order to easy to access to it. Private Key or Seeds are definitely one of the most important thing in order to access our online wallet. We need to take care of it wisely.

You said yourself your "seed is always online", meaning there are a lot of bored people searching for and competing to steal from brainwallets similar to yours. Hopefully it's a warpwallet or something similar with key stretching.

The problem with saving seed in your phone is that your phone could be online most of the time. It could therefore be infiltrated with malwares and your seed accessed.



Saving your private key or mnemonic seed in an online device is bad enough. Saving it in a social media site is suicide.

While you are aware that your private keys and mnemonic seed are very important and that they should be taken care wisely, I guess you are betraying these very words because you are doing it wrong.

Your chat box is never a safety place. Gossips cannot even be safe there, how much more are your private keys and seed?

most people that work outside are not familiar with btc or those stuffs because they spend their time working outside with their non btc/crypto jobs

. they will scan your items and what can they only see is a paper and it will be akward if they will record or write , seed phrases are also long and compose many words ao i dont think they can memorize those all . lastly there are cctv's and i hope that will record all suspicious activities if you still feel worried .

There are already good ways of storing your seep upon traveling mentioned above, the best thing to deal with it only stores it on your memory, that is the safest way and a risky way as well especially if you are not good at reminding something you have read but if you are confident enough that you won't lose it on your memory then go for it. You may also write it in a piece of paper and put it on your wallet on your phone's case, that is already safe, just make sure not to be stolen.

But in regards to Your question and concerning Custom official that may have interest to your ledger and Seed together ,Obviously the Seed can be in a paper wallet in which too small to take attraction when inserted somewhere your luggage ,you can customize that to have a safety since scan wont react on that unless it is a Bulk of Money so just act simply , the problem with people who carry important thing is that their actions are obvious and can be analyze by skilled bad elements ,if you are not sending KYC to somewhere in crypto world and separated your real life business in this market ,i don't think someone will go suspected you .

If you have intentions to go back after travelling, storing the seed in a nice safety deposit box in a bank would be recommended. I highly suggest that you do this but also add another layer of security on the seed itself, like placing a couple of spoof seeds that go along the original one. This way you’ll be the one who knows which is which when you come back. If you want to carry the seed with you however, old phones that are always stored in a safe place, coupled with some storage devices such as flash drives that don’t connect to the internet are some that you can use and do, too.

Exactly, a piece of paper will get easily lost. Try having a journal or a ledger to write your seed phrase. I have mine on a Moleskine and it feels safer there because even if the custom looks at it, they will never bat an eye. If you really want to up your game with hiding it, you can use layers of ciphers to mask your real seed phrase.

Only good memory can help you in this case. But it is a great risk to forget some symbol or mix them. But in case paper variant can not be hidden very good, so only learning seeds, it is the only variant. Or hiding it on the open place - may be to engrave inside of the band or ring, or on the bracelet without some or the one last symbol from seed that you will remember.

if it's just privately written down/stored, then it's just an encrypted seed---not the best encryption, but no one who finds it will instantly be able to break it.

keep in mind however, that for anyone remotely sophisticated who is able to take time brute forcing, there are only "millions" of possible combinations. that's not secure at all. i wouldn't consider it sufficiently encrypted to store publicly. it's a lot better than storing a seed in plain text though.

If you get searched because they suspect you of smuggling or something they could look into your wallet. They can make you strip if they feel like it.

The best way is probably storing a copy in an encrypted USB pendrive. They don't check digital files, only physical stuff.

You are right, of course, it's not the full algorithm, neither the exact.

'Crypting and coding' algorithm like that are used by people from centuries. I first pick up the idea of reading some historical books in the pre-internet era for a different purpose. Then put in action for crypto wallet a few years ago after watching "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1515091/). Professor James Moriarty notes are coded in a similar way.

To be honest, the safest place to store seeds is a safe deposit box in a bank, because I keep my seed there along with other securities.
But if we travel frequently it is difficult too, especially going abroad. In my opinion, the most effective way is to store it online, even though
the risk is quite large. I usually save part of it in email and save part of it in the notes on my smartphone. So far it is safe and has never
been hacked, maybe those of you who often travel can try the solution I did.

A safe deposit box is very secure against most adversaries, but against an adversarial government -- probably not.

I'm at least slightly paranoid about a Bitcoin version of Executive Order 6102 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Order_6102) -- where the government banned gold ownership, forced citizens to sell their gold to the government, and confiscated it from those who didn't comply.

If your seed is sitting in a safe deposit box, I highly recommend encrypting it. Better safe than sorry!

1. Extend the seed with custom word(s); keep the seed wherever you want, keep the custom words on the back of your kids'/wife/whatever photo in your wallet (and somewhere else too)
2. Encrypt the seed with a password
3. Keep in parts. 12 words there and 12 words somewhere else. This works even as 2 different books/documents/whatever in your own luggage, as long as they are not obviously printed as a list of words, although in case of luggage I'd feel safer if I'd use [1] or [2].

Keep in mind to store the seed in at least 2 different places, just in case one burns down or whatever...

I also believe that if you put it only on a sheet of paper, even though it may be practically clear, it can't guarantee that it won't be easily lost or the notes become blurry due to oil exposure or folds. really not recommended for that very simple thing.
Moleskine that you say I just know and have never used but with a form that is too large like that for you it is very practical for storage !!! You say you can do protection, of course you can be very reliable, but for me the shape is still too big and not practical, but it all depends on your taste and maybe you think it is the best.

I myself have no idea what I will do if I have to do it, maybe I will try from the many reviews which one is the best.

Usb drive is a good item to store your seed. Or perhaps that piece of paper you can actually write but you dont have to write in full. You can actually memorize the first 5 to 10 letters and write the rest of it. Leave behind the worries even other people see your seed as they can't stole it. There are so many ways actually if you are carrying it all the time then you can try one of the suggestions here.

A good way to safely store the seed is to memorize English words.  Seed can be stored in your head.  On the other hand, there is a chance to forget these 12 words and it will be a disaster. 

The main risks are that your laptop or smartphone could be stolen.  At the border, it is possible to inspect your devices with the assistance of technical specialists.  If the survey is carried out by IT specialists, the seeds will (probably) be found easily.  Hence, based on this, a very powerful protection for your device is required. 

I think you should consult with the appropriate cybersecurity experts.  The cost of a mistake is too great.

How many safety deposit boxes do you use and you break the seed into two pieces right?  The thing is if you only have two banks with two deposit boxes... well what if theft/fire or something happens to one of them?  So wouldn't it make sense to have four safety deposit banks with two copies each and two pieces broken to make it safe?

I mentioned how i would put it in lastpass/keepass... then put it in the cloud ... dropbox/gmail... so if someone were to hack my email... they still need to know what is my lastpass/keepass password.  So isn't that good enough?


Of course the big issue here is if you get malware/virus/keylogger on your computer, then you are screwed then right especially keylogging?  Because that person could see everytime you type in when you enter your lastpass/keepass and email password?  Thus they could just log into it anytime they want and you wouldn't know?

If it is about hardware, yeah it may be a dilemma when you want to carry them out but it is too risky to do that. if there is a safe deposit box, it is the best way. Or, if you have your family and you trust them, you can also put it to them. However, if it is in your apartment, will be there a theft. You may also put it in your house or apartment but inside a very safe box with an advanced key. It may be also good to leave them there.  So here, I will be also very worried if something happens when carrying that with us around the traveling.

Well, it is always good if you will carry your seed while on travel is on physical just like writing it down in a piece of wood or even in plastic that no one suspected that is a seed of cryptocurrency. I don't trust keeping my seed online or in a cloud, there are too many instances that could be happened while your seed is online. Make multiple copies and keep them in your wallet that you always carry wherever you are. The best is, be responsible enough for all your belongings safe wherever you are and you are totally safe.

Google Invisible ink /writing . They show how to write invisibly . you heat the page and presto writing appears .

We did that playing spies ,and later sending love letters . You simply write with lemon juice. When you want to read it , heat the page .

I use a hardware wallet for my cryptos. I also carry passphrase or seed in the paper while traveling. I don't write as it is. I always shuffle some words that I can always remember so that If someone has access to my passphrase they can not access my wallet. Be Smart.

The best way to make sure that your seed is safe is to leave it on a safety bank. You can also split your seed then leave it on a two different safety bank. If the bank you left your seed is said legit then you don't need to worry and you can continue what you are doing but if you manage to put it on unnamed bank then it is a bad idea. We really need to socialize with each other so that we can know if the bank we are leaving our seeds are legit or not. If we manage to do this kind of work individually, we cannot survive until the end but if we manage to help each other then we can make the community better and achieve what all of us are dreaming for this community. In this kind of work, we need to give informations and take informations.

What about using a favourite book which you can carry with you or buy a copy if needs be?

Storing your "Seed" online is a huge risk, if you do not know what you are doing. The best method to do this is not to store all the seed words on one platform. Try to break it up into pieces for example : Put the first 3 words in a webmail account as a encrypted attachments to a email and then put the next 3 words in a Cloud storage platform within a encrypted file and the last 3 words, you can keep in your physical wallet. (on a piece of paper that are laminated or written on the back of a business card.)

Nobody will be able to assemble the 12 words in order, if you break it up into different pieces and store it in different places. (Tip : Make sure you store the whole seed with one of your trusted family members, if something happens to you)  ;)

Same feeling here too, I don't know why OP did store the seed online where it could be seen by hacker,
I have some ideas for OP why not print it on your underwear that you would wear on the flight,
Print an encrypted message on a tumbler and always hold it and make sure you wouldn't lose it.
I also am curious why you need the seed when you are traveling when you already have the hard ware wallet? OP you should just make sure that the seed is safe at your home.

So is! it is important to have safe seeds in various places in the home. I would have several copies and not explicitly as preventive measures if one is lost.
If I am going to travel I would keep the camouflaged seed in my travel books. Although the safest thing is that I have the funds for the trip in crypyo and Fiat in another wallet either in a P2P exchange and always keeping my wallet in a safe place at home.
I am also a bit jealous and discreet with my portfolios.

I was suppose to suggest the same thing on where breaking up to several parts of your entire seed.Its impossible for someone to find out that those words are part of a seed.

Placing it randomly neither back of your id, and smartphone notes or stickies or even on cloud storages will really be enough.Just be sure that you wont forget a piece of it

or else you would really be fucked up and let those coins lost forever in the void.It is just a matter on how you do creatively separate and putting them back without letting others know.

Saving it in your memory may sound good but as a member pointed out here, when you are at a gun point or threatened, you might give it out even if you don't want to.
And also, there is a possibility of forgetting it, I have seen it happen (I am an example).

However, have you thought of camouflaging it within written words? It may sound so simple, but many people might not know that this can be the best way cause a thief won't even imagine it to be so.

I only use 2 deposit boxes, it's true that if something happens to one of the deposit boxes it will be a problem. Therefore I do have to have a copy,
but using 4 deposit boxes for me wastes too much money. I keep a copy in a part of my house, which I consider the safest. But I only keep part of
the seed, partly I save it in a notebook on my smartphone. That way it is safe enough for me.

It's tantamount to carrying the seed with you everywhere, especially if the pet's name isn't on the word list. Even if it is, theoretically if someone could strip search you and knew what they were doing, they could feasibly check all combinations of one word being changed (24*2048) to rule out your scheme.

Do you mean using a vault box? Just like the old times where gold and other luxuries or assets are placed for safety purposes.

You can use a vault box to store your seeds, your hardware wallets will surely be safe in that place. Also, don't tell anyone that you have a vault box so that you are lowkey private about your information.

Banking is also possible it is your preferences if you want to store your seeds there, separating your seeds can also secure you to prevent huge losses when bad things occur.

I have no idea but does airport authorities search even the inside of your shoes? If not, you can write it on a piece of paper and put it there or inside your socks, phone case is also good to hide that paper. Then to make sure they won't be able to access it even if they search through all your things, remove the last 3 words of it and memorize it on your mind. If you're afraid you will forget it, you can print those 3 words on t-shirt or anything that you use daily.

I never experienced travelling abroad with my Seed because i mostly leaving those in my safe place .

But if wanna bring it to me? i think putting special pocket in my Luggage or somewhere in my underwear. or even in my Sacks .

I can't even imagine why all of you want to put it in a safe vault box. Did you know that it even adds in you luggage maximum weighs. We are living in the new technology where all things are possible. I can say that we can safely store our private keys on the internet. Just on your lsptop download some sruff that keeps password with a password. For me this is one of the effective ways because I even experience it. And just to make sure make a copy or backup in your own house. I know that this may be at risk but for me it is so much risky when you carry it with you in travelling in a vault or piece of paper.

To me the most simple approach is the best, just memorize your seed, I know it sounds hard but it is only 12 to 24 words, if you give it one month and you go over those words for 15 minutes each day then those words will be committed to your memory on the right order.

This way there is nothing anyone can find on you that could tell that somehow you are holding cryptocurrencies, I know this will require some commitment from you but it seems like the best option for those that want to leave no traces.

Why would you even do that instead of just keeping it encrypted on a txt file? Saving it on an image is an extra unnecessary step.

You shouldn't "carry" your seeds. Just keep them on a safe place. I don't know your smartphone, but I believe that it's connected to the internet which makes your seed vulnerable to a compromisation. You shouldn't keep it there, but on a paper, especially if it's a very important one as you mentioned. Remember, seed is the "key" that recovers your coins. You don't have to carry it with you wherever you go.

I realize you can not recall your wallet secret phrase yet you can not store it on any online resources. It's exceptionally unsafe to upload your keys on any online stage since programmers nowadays focusing on private keys more than some other thing. For me, the best thing is to compose it on paper and offer it to somebody whom you can trust. I trust my wife more than anyone so I gave all of my wallets Ids to her and she keeps them in a very safe place.

Okay so imagine someone has their seed in their apartment or in their bank safety deposit box.  Let say they located in Florida to make it simple.  Now they want to move to another state like Nevada or Texas or move abroad to another country like in Europe or South America.


How would one do this when bringing their seed with them?  I mean you are going to be flying by airplane so you basically just put your seed in your wallet or something?  Could the x ray machines read the words?  Imagine you put your seed in a piece of paper and it goes through xray and that person could see the words and its very obvious to them what it is if they are into crypto.  Then what happens then?


Or when you put your wallet in the x ray boxes for it to scan etc.  Are words like that visible?  Then how does one make sure they travel from one state to another or another country and be safe with traveling their seed?  Assume in this example, that person is moving from Florida to Texas or Nevada or to Europe/South America for good and never going back to Florida.  How do they make sure they take their seed safely with them before they get to their destination?

X-ray or Terahertz scanners is not really something I'd be worried about, being profiled and searched if the country whose borders you're crossing does this is something that's more likely to happen. And you can always store it in an encrypted or coded form.

Alternatively, you can remember the seed phrase for a while. And on a permanent basis, it is better to make yourself a hint of words (for example, fill yourself with a tattoo from the first letters of the words)

Human memory is too fallible for that. Too strong a hit to the head, early-onset dementia or other neurodegenerative disorder and you can say goodbye to your funds.

You can use a dictionary book, and mark the words or letters that represents your seed.
You can fully or partially mark it. For example, you only needs to remember half, 4 last words, or specific words depends on your preferences. The rest of them marked on your dictionary book. Not sure if this a proper idea.
But since I already reveal it here, I am sure it’s not a good idea, because some of you already know it now.

I remember back then that I used to be traveling a lot. So what I have been doing to store my seeds is that I am using Protonmail with a very strong password and a recovery backup email as well. I am more comfortable in storing on my Protonmail than in GMail, Yahoo, etc. Then I also copy them manually on my “sacred” notebook and keep it somewhere safe in the house. As for keystore files, I have bought an external SSD drive rather than a HDD (because HDD’s can easily be damaged by falling even unintentional).

the problem with SSDs is that if it dies there is basically a zero chance of recovery. whereas with a standard spinner HD there is the possibility of recovery via dedicated recovery services (transplanting platters etc).

spinner HDs are reasonably OK with small drops as long as they are off. the heads will be parked.

Write it down, put it in a condom, shove it up your ass, pretty simple. You’re very unlikely to get cavity searched if you’re a normal looking guy, behaving sensibly at the airport.

Store your keys on offline cold storage or some hardware wallets where they are safe instead of storing them online which is already prone to hacks and steal of your funds from your wallets.Try to encrypt your seeds that if someone has acces to it they cannot use it until they provide valid proof for them.Try to save it on usb and place it in a very safe place where no one can look out or have some detective mind and store them in most absurd place where nobody would try to break in and think nothing valuable would be found.So its your security in your own hands and if its compromised nothing can be done.

I don't recommend writing down your seed phrases on paper or putting the seed phrases online either rather memorize your seed phrases. I see nothing wrong with memorizing 24-word seed phrases. Putting your seed phrases online has so many downsides because anything can happen, you can easily get hacked without your knowledge and the hackers can steal all your bitcoins. For me, If I can't store my bitcoins on my secure mobile wallet app, I rather memorize the 24-word seed phrases.

Why would really come into this certain extent?  :D. Writing it on a piece of paper would already do even just on a small notebook or paper which is divided into several pieces so that
incase that the other part is seen they cant still able to access the wallet because those arent complete private keys or seed.You wont really be needing to get into this situation.
Storing it online is always not advisable or risky because we know that cloud storages could really be hacked from time to time so its not really that a nice place to store up
your seed.I'd rather put it on a notepad and store it on a personal usb then carry it just like those normal days on carrying some work files you do had.

Reading the comments from the members here is very interesting, giving some ideas on how to save seeds safely. The safest thing is to remember it,
but the problem is that everyone doesn't have a good memory. So indeed the best and quite safe way is to write some of it on a piece of paper or
on a notebook that we usually carry when traveling. And some can be stored online, so even if someone tries to hack, they only get a portion of our seed.
Because we store them in two different places, because it is very unlikely that the two storages are known by other people.

For someone who is constantly travelling and moving into new homes I think that is indeed the best approach. There isn't 100% safe answer for this question, but due to the circumstances I think this is the solution which best fits.

Sounds like a plan :D Especially that swallowing for the second time. What if you don't eat but get scared and have to use the toilet mid-flight? There are much easier ways. Take a computer with you. Each time I've traveled with a laptop I only had to show it to them and sometimes power it up just so that the screen loads and they'd allow me to go. If you're scared about somebody stealing it or whatever just write down the seed on a piece of paper and load it into the wallet once you arrive at your destination.

It is not strictly advisable to store your seed online, storing your seed online is too vulnerable to hackers, the best way to store your seed when traveling or moving abroad is to write it down on a piece of paper and put it in a secret place, make sure that has back up, the one is at the secret place and the other one is up to you just make sure that it is not vulnerable of being burnt or being wet.

Kerckhoff’s Principle applies only to ciphers.  It is way overused.  Security by obscurity is oftentimes useful, and sometimes necessary.  Much of tradecraft relies on obscurity.  If you have worked out some special way to exfiltrate your own secrets from a repressive dictatorship,

I melt down my seed, forge it into an all-powerful Ring in the manner of Der Ring des Nibelungen, and stick it on my finger.  A Rhinemaiden accompanies me, acting as my wife; thus, border guards will simply assume that it is my wedding ring.  Nobody ever questions this ruse, and I have never had any mishaps this way—unless I go with Floßhilde; that girl is trouble!  In the future, I plan to upgrade:  I will wear the Tarnhelm to make myself invisible.


If you want to use this method, beware that the high melting point of a BIP 39 standard seed requires the use of an acetylene torch; and reconstituting the ring into bitcoins requires throwing the ring into the Rhine River, then killing the gods and destroying the heavens.  (I need to file a Github issue about this.)

But you can divide, and separate the seeds words of your travelling wallet pasted to 3 or more text files, encrypt them, tar/zip them each with different passwords, and store them in 3 or more different file-hosting service accounts, in 3 or more different file-hosting service sites.

That is not secure:  An attacker who obtains one or two pieces can then attempt to bruteforce the rest.  If you have a 12-word BIP 39 seed divided that way into 3 pieces, and the first two pieces^* are discovered or seized, then the remainder has only 40 bits of security (!).

* The order matters, because the last piece is partly just checksum material.

Shamir’s Secret Sharing is information-theoretically secure.  If you set it up with 3 shares where all 3 are required (3/3), then an attacker who obtains 2 pieces has zero information about the secret, and cannot bruteforce the rest.

More generally, in an M/N secret sharing setup, M-1 pieces give nothing; M pieces are required to reconstruct the secret, while you can set it up with N>M for redundancy.  If you lose one piece, you don’t want to lose access to the secret!

You say they can brute force the rest.  Well how many words exposed would make you be very concerned then?


Imagine with a 24 word seed.  Let say you broke it in half.  If someone has half your seed, aren't you still safe from brute force?  Someone mentioned that someone having half of that is essentially like having 0 words of a l2 word electrum seed.


Or imagine you broke it into three parts.  How hard is it for someone to brute force if they have 8 words?  l6 words. 

How would customs search so deep that they find a piece of paper? Let's imagine the piece of paper is in a book (cause you definitely won't be holding it), how would the customs know you have a paper in the book? They're gonna search through every page? I doubt this. However, I actually speed my phrase online... I multiple places. Places that I believe no one can ever reach, and in ways that people cannot understand (if they found it).

It’s a compromise for convenience while traveling. What would be the success probability of an attacker to bruteforce the account of the file hosting service, bruteforce the tar/zip password, bruteforce the encryption password for one file, and do it again for another file with different file hoating service/tar/encryption passwords? I believe very tiny probability for success, and not worth for a few thousand U.S. Dollars.

Your 24 word seed phrase, each word will be one of these 2048 words listed in BIP39:

Look up each of your "REAL" words in the list above, and write down the next "FAKE" word that comes AFTER each real word  (or what ever formula you choose that to easily calculate to the real word).  You will now have a list of 24 fake words.  Carry multiple copies of this fake 24 word list with you.  ALSO, password protect (or not, but less secure) your fake list file and email it to yourself, and post it elsewhere/everywhere on the internet.

When you get to your destination, just download the BIP39 word list, then substitute the fake words for the real words, reversing of course what ever formula you used.

The above is a completely secure, easy to use method, allowing you to either carry, or, not to carry anything physical with you.  You could wash up on the shore naked anywhere that has an internet connection, and re-get full access to your bitcoins.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to have one key for all your funds. I think it should be possible to split your funds into many parts and have different keys to control them. The seed method would make this alittle difficult because of the length of the words

Is tht BIP word list always in that order?  If so, this might sound like a good idea.

To me there are two separate cases. Travelling or moving. If travelling, I don't necessarily want to bring all my wealth with me. If I plan on needing BTC I would take a small wallet simply installed on my PC, no need to complicate things.

If moving, or for backup seeds in general, then yeah, some kind of easy mnemonic way to encode it and hide it. The hide part : put it somewhere it's really unlikely to be found. Encode it : even if someone stumbles upon it, it wouldn't jump out as a seed phrase at all. For example it could look like a haiku.

The thing I haven't figured out yet is how to ensure it goes to someone if I were to suddenly die.

I You can safely carry your seed about if it is made into a pictorial form. And that is if the seed is that type that can be so done.

Anyone have opinion on this?  Again I did mention a while back i store it online as i encrypt it and store it in the cloud which many people seem to be against.  But that protects against fire and theft.



Also what about people who travel and basically don't have a home and like those travel vloggers?  I guess this question would fit them since you hear lot of people who travel and pay everything with crypto.  Where in the world are they storing their seed?  Do they have it with them in person?  That doesn't feel safe at all.  Do they store it in safe deposit boxes in their banks where they are from where they do visit it once a year or so?  But of course have their hardware wallets with them?

I wrote my wallet password and security phases in my daily notebook and when I started to travel then I keep my notebook in my luggage. Though it's a dangerous because when I would lost my luggage them what would be happened?

There are many ways to store the seeds, I send them to my friends in the email message box or social media. Before I send it I will change a few characters that only I know.
Another way is I send a message in the Saved section of my Telegram account.

Absolutely, the answer is through using hardware wallets where you can fully secure your coins without even getting anxious about it.

I think it is very risky if we bring a piece of paper that says a list of hardware wallets abroad, if someone finds the paper then it will be likely to be subject to customs because it has brought it to a different country. trezor has modes where you can use it like a yubikey for 2FA and as a password manager, so you could list them as that on your declaration form and technically not be lying.

of course anyone that sees the device itself would know what it is.

to send the hardware wallet itself i would probably have a friend mail it to me later. wipe it in case it gets confiscated and then just restore it (after reflashing the firmware in case it was compromised in transit)

I don't see any problem in keeping a cold wallet with me. It cannot be cracked without a proper password. Taking a sheet of paper with a passphrase or a long, easy-to-copy password with you is not the best way to save your money. Ideally, keep such a sheet under lock and key or in a safe, and certainly not store it on a computer connected to the global network.

How about learn it by heart and make sure not to get too wasted and completely forget it? Indeed not that trivial, there is risk involved with whatever option you go for.
Jokes aside, would one option be to divide up the seed and give it to three people? One maybe even a lawyer or so? Or even 6 people, so 2 times 3. That way you have a copy of it.

its recommended you buy several (well at least two) and register each of them with the services you use as so to have at least one backup as any of them will work at that point... and since trezors can be configured as as a yubikey a trezor counts as a backup. with the trezor in yubikey mode it still uses seed words so if your trezor dies or gets lost you can restore the seed to a new trezor and it will function as the same yubikey.

Actually, some people write the seeds on a peace of paper and take it with them whenever they travel somewhere but it's not secure because anyone can find the paper and abuse your recover seed words. That's why I do prefer to read/write the recovery seeds for multiple times and try to always remember the words. That's how I keep my recover phases, these are inside my mind and none can ever steal mt recovery methods.

I may say that Writing in a Piece of Paper is the best way to be secured and safest to travel with you.

Actually I think this is a great idea and lot much safer imo, i don't think it is a joke, if anyone can use a combination of things names they are familiar with on the phrase there is very little chance you will forget this combination, because as much as we try to be care and protect our hardware wallet, there is still that chance of misplacing it some how, but if anyone is able to memorise keys as well as write it down somewhere safe in lock and key that will be even better.

No, I mean on paper. Say you have a 24 word seed phrase and you split it up in 3 x 8 words and distribute two copies of each to 6 people you trust. It is important that these six people don't really know each other. At least those who hold a different piece of paper shouldn't know each other. You could give two copies of the same to family. But there is another risk: imagine you start an argument with your family for a weird reason and two siblings unite against you and don't want to hand out the third piece of the puzzle and blackmail. This is a complicated problem.

What about a system that works with smart contracts and oracles. For example, you store your seed in a digital blockchain-based vault. The login to that vault is a specified email. It only opens if you type in the password, and a specified so called 3 out of 4 multisig. For example, you could specify that if in a certain time window I log into the vault, say between 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM timezone x, in that time window I use my 2fa on my mobile phone (authenticator), log into Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter (3 out of 4 in total), then my vault opens and I can access the seed. If it does not work out because I lose my phone and I don't know, Facebook is down, I can specify a second email address that a code is released to after say four weeks of not logging in. If the vault afterwards still is not accessed, the vault assumes that I am dead.In that case I can specify the procedure that ensures my heirs get access. For example, specify their email addresses to be contacted next with the necessary instructions to access the vault.

How can you give the seed to multiple people?  What if something happens to one of them?  Then what happens?  What if you no longer talk to them or they don't want to talk to you even?

How in the world is it safe carrying the seed with you when it travels?  I mean if you lose it or anything like that... where is your backup?  Or is that your only backup?

In writing it there must be some hidden notes added to avoid theft or use from other users who might know too how these codes works. Usually I put some extra letters or numbers in some words whenever I save password, may it be from writing or typing it at my notes or drive. While moving to abroad we need to keep it by ourselves. But how to keep it is the actual problem.

I agree with you and would do the same here. I think that we might be thinking of this too hard because most of us have taken these trips before without carrying something like wallet seeds with us, was the crossing that difficult without your seeds? so I don't think it should be seen as this herculean task not unless you are a wonted person anyways.

Its not really that hard and same as you said as long you arent a wanted person then i dont see for a reason for you to be that paranoid with your PK.
As long on a particular country isnt really that strict with crypto or does have total ban then i dont see for you to worry.

For me, this is the method I normally use each time am travelling to a far place, I will screenshot my seed phrase, store it into hidden files in my gadget(where no one can think of opening it). The moment I get to my destination, I will write down my seed phrase on a piece of paper. After writing it down, I will then delete the screenshot seed phrase out of my gadget quietly.

Remember seed by heart is not a practical approach as you can forget or mix up the words and may never access the wallet. I would not recommend storing the seed online like email etc as those are not the recommended ways to store your private keys.
Why not take 2 or 3 notebooks with you which are totally filled with text and you store seed texts in different pages. Now on one will be able to guess the seed from hundreds of rough work being done in the notebooks.

Make a TrueCrypt file with a very strong passphrase.
Store this encrypted file somewhere on internet possibly not directly connected with you.
Encrypt passphrase with a simple password known only to you - 6 number pin + some letters in second truecrypt file.
Send 2nd file to yourself on the travel day.
Upon arrival decrypt both files, create new wallet and transfer all coins to this new wallet.

Well, I would take with me a notepad with a written story by me containing the 12 words of the seed distributed along the whole text, very well disguised in a way nobody could suspect anything. You just need to be creative to create a coherent tale, what shouldn't be so hard, since seeds' words are really common ones, being possible to add them to any fictions easily.
And I doubt someone would steal a cheap notepad from your luggage or seize it, because there isn't any reasonable cause to justify that at first point.

Hmm personally, I think it would be best if you could store your seed in a safety deposit box. If such is too bulky for you to store, then I would suggest putting the box in a safe and secured place or you could also deposit them into banks for safekeeping. Unfortunately, that is indeed the safest option when travelling. Unless you might want to run on the risk of losing it, then I highly suggest that you bring it to you every step of the way.

Another option is that you could let your friend or the police handle the box until you actually need it.

If you try to memorize it, it is almost guaranteed that you will forget it one day, there is no way you could keep 12 words or so in your mind forever. However, if you email it to yourself or something then you are guaranteed to keep it. You may not trust it, but who knows that you are actually a rich person or are you even one that worths getting hacked into?

You could do it in a reverse order for example and not say which place it belongs to, which way people would not be able to decode it. Do it in a weird secret way that only you could understand if you are worried. Or store it in an image and just hide it somewhere between some books.

This suggestion has been given by few people here and guess what the staff at the airports are reading these suggestions too.  ;)
Next time if you see them looking at your notebook and taking interest in the story written on that notebook, be alert, they are searching for your seed  :)

Hahaha! If they get too interested on the story, then the crypto enthusiast might think about publishing a book and nobody will be able to identify which are the seed's words yet, since they will be among so many others. ;)

Going abroad, why you should buy a cheap notepad? Is it forbidden to travel with a laptop or iPhone?

I was traveling to Germany, I had an iPhone with me and I took my laptop with me, no problem.

The thing in Notepad is a very trivial thing, it can be lost at any time, so if you want to write a story, you can save it on your iPhone or laptop without writing it in Notepad, It is much safer.

People do really love to complicate things even if it wasnt really that needed much for them to do which they could simply make use of the current or latest gadgets without any problems and without
going into much more extent on having those seeds on a book or notepad or something because other storage alone would be just enough and not to make yourself on a hassle just because you

 I still %100 believe that Ledger should be enough. I mean you have your hardware wallet with you, and you know how to get into it, and it is safe. You can go anywhere with it, and even use any PC you want to connect it and get a hold of your money as well. It is always risk that you may lose it, but I am sure there must be some way to get them back right? If not, then you should be very careful with it :D All in all you could go anywhere in the world and it will be right there, in your pocket. What other type of safety would you need? It could be definitely stolen, crash, broken, wet or so but I am sure there must be some backup plan for all of that.

This is quite an easy and possible solution. No one will seize or take away the notepad, but we don't know what is our fate. As a common man we can easily move to different countries carrying the notepad. By some problem while we're travelling someone stole the luggage carrying the notepad, what to do. To avoid such scenario memorizing it is good choice or should have the same stored in some other tale.

There are so much thing we can do to keep our seeds safe, it is just a couple of words that can be keep in private without others looking on to that.

Some people are paranoid about tight security systems while others are not aware that you have a bitcoin wallet. I have a solution so you don't have to worry too much about keeping phrase seeds in your pocket wherever you are, maybe you can follow these simple steps:
- buy mini flash disk for seed phrase file storage
- convert the seed phrase text to a different format, for example binary then save the file without the extension format.
- add files to .zip with password access
- add another file to save the file, inside a .zip file or some files outside the directory of that file.

No matter how much you protect your accounts, password, and login data, you will not be able to secure your accounts on any site fully. Unfortunately, cyberbullying is now a developed industry for criminals. So it would be best if you write everything down on a piece of paper and put it in the breast pocket of your shirt. Thus, no one will be able to find the data in the conversation materials, in your file-sharing sites, in your email. when i travel abroad, I don't want to have my seed in the apartment as I don't think that is safe.  Where im located, there is lot of breakins... thats how it is here.  Thief would take electronics and wallet etc.  Doesn't matter what neighborhood you are in... its like this here and very common.  So people that say move... well most places are like this.  Even places that has security.  And because of this, i left my seed back in the US.  I mean look even in those rich places in california, you have breakins etc.

For people who like traveling or moving places, they will not store seeds in any place or do careless things like writing on a piece of paper.

Which wallet are you talking about here? The one that contains our identity cards and some little money? If yes, what if it get lost? It's not even ideal to be moving around with your seeds unless it is unavoidable circumstances. Encryption is the best way though it is some how dangerous and risky when you are dealing with a lot of issues.

You've got the right idea about this. I don't know any nation prohibits papers and there boarder officers will go about searching that out. I don't like the idea of a piece of paper even as that could be misplaced anytime, not even when you've got it in a wallet as that's a target for pickpockets. Probably, a book would be nice.

I've read from some people who even gets to translate there seed into there local dialect and perhaps starts from a reverse side in its understanding. Perhaps you could use a different mixup entirely but what you can easily understand and others won't. You get it coded in your own terms and move around with it without anyone else getting to know what you carry.

I can't have my side online for any reason. It just never feels safe.

People are now quite aware about cryptocurrencies. Older people did not get any means of knowing about any subject within few moments. But nowadays, with the influence of technology, people can now bring everything in their hand. It does not take much time to learn about any unknown subject.

In my perspective there is no person in the world who doesn't know more or less about something like Bitcoin and with the change of day everyone is aware about Bitcoin and Seed Phrases. If OP wants to carry his own seed phrase while traveling somewhere then he can. If the written seed phrase goes through scanning normally, there shouldn't be any problems. But I think there are many places in online you can remembering your secret password and storing it there won't be a big problem. I have yet to come across any such case where the seed phrase written on paper is checked.

Have you thought about using a multisig setup and only crossing a border with one of your keys and then asking someone you trust to hold another key and you only move funds when you have safely crossed a border?

You could even do this with a wallet like Nunchuk or something and only have to keep a single key on yourself so you wouldn't have to worry about being compromised when you cross a border. If you get searched, you don't have any bitcoin on your person. This would require you to have some help form a trusted third party but it would protect your funds from being compromised.

Another thing you could do is to generate a new empty wallet and have a number of signed transactions that you haven't broadcast that send money from your existing wallet to your new empty wallet and only send the new transactions when you need the funds. This would require minimal trust from a third party or even yourself and then you could cross a border with little to no bitcoin on you and then send yourself funds once you were safe on the other side. You could even keep the signed transaction on the cloud and only broadcast when you need them. This way, you wouldn't even put any of your funds at risk.

I have spent a good bit of time thinking of exactly this but hopefully it never comes to this and there's a government somewhere that actually cares about its people and doing the right thing and preserving the rights of the people.

I don't think that will ever happen but I can at least hope for the best.

It is still simple to do. Seed phrase is line up according to the way that they are ordered and if they are interchange it will not be accurate so you can write it down the way that it is interchanged for the third party and if they try to login it in, it won't and give error message and only you will know how you have changed it but this is better for a short journey so that you will not forget it. You can also have another method of omitting some letters but for a short journey.

Why do you have to carry your backups around when you are travelling or moving abroad?

If you want to keep your backups safely, you should keep them at safe locations like somewhere at home.

If you want to use your bitcoins when you are traveling but with less harmful effects on your main wallets, you can create a new empty wallet, and send part of your bitcoin from a main wallet to a new one. These part of your bitcoins will be used when you are traveling.

If you lose it, you lose your sub-wallet, not your main wallet. You won't lose your backups when traveling.
