Title: Best wallet for Android?
Post by: Poker Player on September 24, 2021, 05:36:58 AM
Hi,

I see that this part of the forum does not have much movement. What would be the best wallet to carry on your mobile? I have seen Samourai, which seems interesting, because it carries TOR, but I have done some research and in this thread:

Best wallet to improve Bitcoin privacy, Wasabi, Samourai or something else? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5285217.0)

It seems that Samourai's team does not have a very good reputation, although they compare both wallets in terms of privacy, but Wasabi does not have a mobile version.

I would like to know if any of you use Samourai for mobile or another wallet and what you think.

Samourai wallet is a good wallet in my opinion, but using it for ricochet will comes will much higher fee which is 0.002 BTC, I have not used it before but some people do recommend it.

Wasabi wallet is a CoinJoin wallet, you can read their FAQ before you can think of using it at all to know what their fee look like, also like you implied, it support only computer, no mobile version.

Available for mac, windows & linux and frequently asked questions (https://wasabiwallet.io/#:~:text=You%20currently%20pay%20a%20fee,%25%20*%2050%20(%3D0.15%25).)

You currently pay a fee of 0.003% * anonymity set. If the anonymity set of a coin is 50 then you pay 0.003% * 50 (=0.15%).

People uses these types of what for privacy, especially CoinJoin wallet like wasabi while considering not to directly not sending coin to a centralized service for it not to be seized because it was CoinJoined.

How can tainted coins becomes hard to be recognized by centralized services (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5341835.msg57156547#msg57156547)

But Samourai wallet can still also be used for making normal transaction also. You can read about making use of mixer to enhance privacy. These are lists of reputed mixers

2021 List Bitcoin Mixers Bitcoin Tumblers Websites (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2827109.0)

The mobile wallet I have used before and I like is electrum, it is also open source wallet, but it can not be compared to electrum on computer which have more features that can enhance privacy. But if you need a privacy wallet, I will suggest you to go for Bitcoin Core which will allow you to run your own node and using it with Tor, but it will require over 400 gigabyte to download the full blockchain.

But if you need an SPV wallet, I will advice you to go for Electrum, but know that SPV wallets connects on public server and sychronize with the blockchain.

I think Electrum is the best bitcoin wallet around, and you can use its android version.
https://electrum.org/#download

For multicurrency walelts Trust Wallet is also open source and it supports a wide variety of altcoins. It has an Android version:
https://trustwallet.com/download-page

I think those are the best two options for android, while I also agree that Samourai is a good choice.

Remember that no Android wallet is really safe.
I think no one should ever carry more than a thousand dollars in a mobile wallet. There are many risks involved, but i think the most problematics are:

- They are hot wallets
- You can be approached by criminal and coerced to transfer your coins.

What would be the best wallet to carry on your mobile?
Depends on your specific requirements...

As a general rule of thumb, if you already use Electrum on the desktop and would like a "companion" app for your Mobile, then I'd recommend the Electrum android app. It isn't as full featured as the desktop app, but can be useful if you want to maintain a watching only Electrum wallet (as there aren't any other Android apps that I know of that support Electrum seeds).

Another decent android wallet is Mycelium... it has lots of nice features like hardware wallet support etc. One downside is the fairly obvious monetisation attempts by the devs with the "ads" tabs (aka "Businesses" and "Crypto Betting" etc) ::) They have also had some rather dubious events in the past like the sketchy russian mining campaign and the "coloured coin" fundraising thing that raised millions that seemed to get spent on a "working holiday" for the dev team at the time etc.

The actual "Bitcoin Wallet for Android" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet) which this board was actually originally about... (Surprise! This is not a generic "android wallets" board ;) :P)... is also fairly robust but lacks a lot of the features of some of the other wallets.

A lot of the privacy focused folks like Samourai... I've not used the more recent versions, so I can't really comment.

This is a big LOL. I don't know if this thread should be moved to another part of the forum, then.

Thanks for the answers in general, is that I am thinking in the future to make a trip somewhere where I know that you can spend Bitcoin, then I had thought to install a wallet to take something to spend.

You have talked about Electrum, but I would like to keep it separate from my hardware wallet funds, take just a little bit, as Bitmover says:

Remember that no Android wallet is really safe.
I think no one should ever carry more than a thousand dollars in a mobile wallet.

Although that is relative, for someone holding 50BTC, carrying 0.2BTC in the mobile wallet is not a problem. This is not my case, of course.

Do you think it would be better to carry an LN wallet? I don't know much about it, and as I understand that you have to open a channel for each site you want to pay, I don't know if it would be very useful.

What would be the best wallet to carry on your mobile?
In addition to the above comments, I would suggest narrowing down your choices to those with reproducible builds [I do know it doesn't automatically equate to being 100% secure, but it's a good start].
Note: Some of them have recently gained a lot of mixed reviews [e.g. first one on the following list]:

  • Walletscrutiny (https://walletscrutiny.com/)
    - Scroll down until you reach the middle of the page.

I am thinking in the future to make a trip somewhere where I know that you can spend Bitcoin, then I had thought to install a wallet to take something to spend.

I would not use any android wallet as my main wallet but more for some pocket money and small transactions, but if I had to choose I would go with some open source wallet.
Electrum (https://electrum.org/) is standard desktop spv wallet for Bitcoin but I don't like their mobile version, Mycellium wallet is full of adds, and I would better go for BlueWallet (https://bluewallet.io/).
Samourai (https://samouraiwallet.com/) wallet is fine if you want to have more privacy but you will still need to run your own full node to be able to send Coinjoin transactions, and maybe the best and safest option would be to have combination of hardware wallet and mobile wallet.

Unfortunately the only Android wallet I know to properly support hardware wallet is Mycelium. Indeed, it's imperfect abd it's full of ads. Still, for now I don't have any good enough replacement.
From what I know Electrum doesn't support HW and from what I've read BlueWallet may be working with Coldcard (for Ledger and Trezor all I've got is how to import xpub for watch only wallet).
So if OP wants to use a HW, he may have to also consider this.

I know about the wallet, but I don't think it's safe. I used to use Samourai bitcoin wallet, but instead my bitcoins disappeared, little by little it decreased (not from the price) I don't know why. that is what I feel. I switched to using a bitcoin wallet from an exchange that came from my country, until now it is still safe.

Then you must have used the coin mixing option, and that comes at a price, which is not cheap if you look at what @Charles-Tim wrote in his post. Therefore, I am sure that your problem with the gradual disappearance of coins has nothing to do with security, but with the fact that you were not aware of the costs you paid for using some functions of the wallet.

I switched to using a bitcoin wallet from an exchange that came from my country, until now it is still safe.

I hope you know the saying “not your keys, not your coins”, and the difference between what you use now (custodial wallet) and any other crypto wallet that gives you complete control over private keys.

Mostly android wallet is not safe, but samourai doing good, i use several week ago before i migrate to trust wallet and other BSC wallet since my investment is more volatile in the BSC network. But i consider to study other wallet that safe from malicious attack or dust attack nextday.
Like someone said above, better not put too much money inside android wallet because its not safe is totally right.

I switched to using a bitcoin wallet from an exchange that came from my country, until now it is still safe.
They're all safe... until they're not.

Mt. Gox was perfectly "safe"... until it wasn't and everyone lost their coins.
Cryptopia was perfectly "safe"... until it wasn't and everyone lost their coins (fingers crossed that the users recover something after the liquidators sort it out).

There are also countless tales of users who had their coins in exchanges (or other custodial services) and then suddenly received "oops, your account is blocked!" emails/notifications etc ::)

If that's a risk you're willing to live with for the sake of convenience, then have at it... but you're basically just using a "traditional banking" service at that point, but likely with less regulation ::)

Have you checked the transaction history in the Samourai wallet? From there, you can check if there are transactions that you do not recognize. (https://docs.samourai.io/wallet/usage#balance-and-transactions (https://docs.samourai.io/wallet/usage#balance-and-transactions)).
Another option, try importing seeds from the Samourai wallet to another wallet such as Electrum.

-snip- I switched to using a bitcoin wallet from an exchange that came from my country, until now it is still safe.
The wallet provided by the exchange is not entirely yours because you do not own the wallet's private key. Use it as needed for trading purposes does not as a main wallet in the long term.

This is one thing about people that do not have in-depth knowledge about what bitcoin wallets generally are, some people do not know that it is not their key, they do not know what seed phrase is or private key all because they are basically using exchanges instead of noncustododial wallet.

All they like to comment is that 'they have been using the wallet for long period of time', that the wallet is good, reliable and reputed, but not knowing they do not have full control over their own coin, and not only that, but also exchanges can be hacked, data breach hacks is also very possible.

_but Wasabi does not have a mobile version.
That means it is contrary to your topic, you are saying Mobile Wallet so all your focus should be on mobile Wallet not on desktop or laptop Wallet here. By the way, talking about the best mobile Wallet to use. It is diver from user to user. I believe everyone has their best Wallet to use. As for me I like Electrum Wallet is compatible with my Android phone. Samourai Wallet is new Wallet to most of us so I can't really say anything on it for much now. But the same. Everyone uses their best Wallet on their mobile phone therefore, I do not think there is a specific mobile Wallet that is best for everyone. What is best for me might not best for you.

I personally have never used Samourai wallet,  but I have heard alot about the wallet,  maybe it's time to give it a try and see what the experience is like   ;D.

Bitcoin wallets I've used previously on Android are -
1. Blockchain.com ~ this was my first ever wallet when I started crypto newly,  it was web based then,  I don't know if they now have a mobile app,  I quickly abandoned this wallet for the next... Which is
2. Coinnomi  ~ I used this wallet for a pretty long time because it was a multi wallet which has support for almost all coins back then,  I later abandoned coinomi wallet for...
3. Mycelium and trust wallets ~ this are the two wallets I am currently using on Android mobile.

And I think Mycelium is a good bitcoin wallet, though it does not have any fancy features,  maybe that is the reason I love the wallet, because of it simplicity and user friendly interface.

I am also wishing that Wasabi would consider launching a mobile version of their wallet,  I would love to try the wallet out too,  just that I spend far more time on my mobile phone, far more than I do on my PC,  so I've gotten so used to mobile wallets.

Blockchain.com has a mobile app, but not a mobile wallet, it is still web based wallet which is not a recommendable wallet to use.

2. Coinnomi  ~ I used this wallet for a pretty long time because it was a multi wallet which has support for almost all coins back then
It is not bad to abandon a close source wallet, Coinomi is a close source wallet and close source wallets are not recommendable.

3. Mycelium and trust wallets ~ this are the two wallets I am currently using on Android mobile.
Trust wallet is close source. If you are going for altcoins, the best is to get an open source hardware wallet that supports many coins and tokens.

I am also wishing that Wasabi would consider launching a mobile version of their wallet,  I would love to try the wallet out too,  just that I spend far more time on my mobile phone, far more than I do on my PC,  so I've gotten so used to mobile wallets.
I too make use of mobile phone often, but this is the reason I have my wallets on computer that I do not use to connect to internet often than to make transactions on my wallet and for transaction and trading on the exchanges I am using.

I've watched several videos on youtube that for the android version, Electrum can be a good recommendation to use. Previously, as a person who actively uses android because I don't have a laptop, I now use a trust wallet and will switch to electrum because electrum is also available on android and its use is also easy I can see in some tutorials.

Bitcoin wallet mentioned above helped me a lot in applying crypto culture IRL. My first transaction went smoothly with this wallet as it connects to blockchain nodes and you may see confirmations going ON AIR. Main thing is to fill up this thing! And I'll be most happy to know potential sources. My main is one of the mostly advertised on these pages. So far I had to pay 7-12% to perform exchanges. But usability of the wallet solves more problems then it creates potential issues. Therefore I stick to it. Can't wait to pay for services and goods directly from wallet to seller!

That was quite expensive. Which wallet are you referring to? AFAIK most Bitcoin wallets (at least those that are open source) don't have a built-in exchange, so all you need is to send your BTC to an exchange. It doesn't take a lot of money depending on the network condition. 7-12% of fees for one trade is quite irregular even among closed source ones unless you're talking about the exchange fee itself, not the TX.

Safety depends on how you use them. It is not safe even if you use an HW but then put your seed online, or use a weak password. Don't think that HW will solve any of your problems. Even a mobile phone wallet is good enough as long as you set it up properly. Obviously not the best choice for a cold wallet, but for small transactions/hot wallet, using a mobile phone is still okay IMO. CMIIW.

In that matter, it's your choice, as long as you always remember that in every choice we make, there may or may not be a risk, just like you, I also experienced using Electrum which I downloaded from android, but I only did it once because I'm more comfortable with my laptop to use the electrum.

Then I also watched some YouTube content that downloading Bitcoin or crypto wallets on androids is quite a high risk and prone to hack most of the time based on the content creator, which has nothing to lose if I believe the creator of content because if I think about it, it has a point and is right.

At the moment too many wallets to choose from and you can not be too sure of the authenticity of them because even scammers (hackers) are able to push cloned apps on some reputable app websites.
Though personally for transactions that move in and out coinomi serves me well thanks to its multi chain features, and different device support, but for long term use an address generated offline should be enough for my btc.

That is why it is good for wallet developers to let users to verify the authenticity of their wallet and its latest version. The common bitcoin wallet that I know more about like Bitcoin Core, Electrum and Bluewallet all make use of PGP verification which is enough to know if their official sites is compromised or not, to know the authenticity of the wallet you downloaded on their website. The mistake some people can make is by not downloading the wallet from the official site and also by not verifying the wallet using PGP signature. Third-party sites can have the fake ones.

From the features seen on the official website Samourai Wallet is available or supports Taproot. Maybe that's the difference between Samourai Wallet and Blue Wallet. Blue Wallet has many advantages including Offline Mode.
With Blue Wallet we can set our own transaction fees, can we do that with Samourai Wallet?

Samourai wallet can not generate pay-to-tap-root addresses, it supports legacy, nested segwit and native segwit for now. But with Samourai wallet, you can send to pay-to-tap-root addresses which other reputed noncustodial wallets would be able to do.

With Blue Wallet we can set our own transaction fees, can we do that with Samourai Wallet?
It make use of slider. It is well explained here: Smart Miner Fees - Samourai Documentation (https://docs.samourai.io/en/wallet/features/miner-fees#:~:text=Samourai%20Wallet%20provides%20users%20with,basis%20using%20the%20fee%20slider.)

Not sure if it's provided by any kind of hacker but following use experience it's quite reliable. I used it to pay for ProtonVPN services and for several inter-wallet transactions. All went without delay and problems. Anybody else gave a hand on it? And you're absolutely right about fee. It includes exchanges portion which is the most part of it.

I am not gonna compare wallets, since I haven't used a lot of them.

My favorite is BlueWallet. Its quite straightforward and easy to use.

You can create hot wallets providing your own entropy (dice rolls, coin flips etc).

It also works perfectly with various airgapped signing devices.

The only wallets I've ever used on android are the Electrum wallet and Klever wallet, and according to my use of these two on android, I haven't experienced any problems using them.

Because if they ever have updates, I immediately do it if they have a reminder to their users. Also, I don't often put a lot of money into the apps I mentioned, the only thing I often use is the desktop Electrum and the same way I save the seeds and private keys are actually stored in a safe place.

The Electrum wallet is one of the Bitcoin wallets that I currently use.
Besides that, some Bitcoin wallets that I think are quite complete with the Taproot wallet for Ordinal wallets are Xverse Wallets.

With Xverse you can have 2 Bitcoin Mainnet addresses and a special Ordinal Wallet Taproot for NFT Bitcoin and also support for lightning Network payments.

An interesting feature is also for Ordinal wallet users who mistakenly transfer Ordinal to the mainnet Bitcoin wallet, which can then be withdrawn to the appropriate Ordinal address.

In case you are not aware, Jaxx wallet is shutting down their services. You can red this thread for more detais:

For Android, I would recommend using Electrum or Blue Wallet.

Release 1.9.31 android Nunchuk wallet has been released.  Among the improvements devs note the following:
   Support for batched transactions
   Coin ancestry view
   Ability to configure gap limit
   Bug fixes and improvements

I liked the wallet in general.  Please note that this android wallet allows you to open and use Taproot accounts.  And by the way, not many of these wallets for BTC support Taproot.  And they are still rarely added for widespread use.

To be honest, i don't look for alternative BTC only wallets because i have been using Electrum for sometime now, and it is safe, secure and is the most recommended BTC wallet for mobile and desktop. I haven't used Nunchuk wallet before, but i have seen a few people recommend it, and so i have researched about the wallet, it doesn't look to be a bad wallet, but it supports cloud back up for seed phrase and keys, and that is a bad option and enough reason for me not to recommend it, just like Ledger and their recovery feature. Additions like these make people who understand BTC so well to avoid certain wallets.
WORRIED ABOUT BACKUPS?
We've got you covered! Wallet and key backups are automatically encrypted and securely stored in the cloud. With our assisted recovery feature, you can regain access to your wallet with a few simple steps.

I completely agree with you.  and even if the topic is about the best wallet for bitcoin, I also would not argue that nunchuk is the optimal and best wallet.
Your arguments are indeed proof of the negative attitude towards such wallet recovery schemes from the point of view of an experienced bitcoin user.
I am also annoyed by this latest news from Ledger.
But I think that this trend in terms of recovery options will still continue.  and this is bad and violates the main advantage of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

Honestly never heard and use Nunchuk Wallet before and I check their domain it was created in 2020 which is pretty new compared to Electrum Wallet which is already proven safe and has actively developing and updates for many years.

Why would I switch to another wallet if I already got the security features we need on Electrum?
The only bad thing that Nunchuk developers did is that they added Cloud service for making a backup of our wallet which is very bad on the future it may compromise our wallet and steal our funds if someone has access to their cloud server.

Keep in mind that the Electrum wallet that is based on the app isn't good to use, some features on the PC version aren't applicable to the app and I think other people will prefer to use another mobile app than the Electrum.

This Nunchuk wallet is new to my ears, I didn't even hear it before.
And based on this article (https://medium.com/nunchuk/introducing-nunchuk-multisig-made-easy-30d3144d0e09),

Nunchuk’s mission is to make multisig the gold standard — no pun intended — for owning Bitcoin.
IMO, they are good as a multisig wallet.

I tried checking their free plan, and it seems I need to register a new account to create a new wallet. Does this also apply to their Android apps? I was thinking of it as an open-source noncustodial wallet like Electrum before I saw their plans. Right now I'm beginning to think they act more like an online wallet, although you do have the option to make it offline/self-custody. Not sure if I'd suggest people use this over other wallets, seeing that they seem to aggressively market themselves as a third-party solution for inheritance etc.

It's bolded above and it's clear what I meant because we're talking a mobile app, however, apologize for your confusion.
It should be the desktop app and the mobile app so that readers understand it clearly because they aren't the same features and of course, when it comes to security.  I think I also used the wrong terminology, not a PC version.

If the trend continues and more wallet services introduce and encourage cloud backup and risky recovery systems, then people who know the right way their seed phrase should be stored would not use such wallet, and it would no longer be recommend by the BTC community, this may even reduce the volume of customers for that service. E.G Localbitcoins shut down because they moved from being a p2p exchange to a data farm, and after some years they didn't have enough customers to keep their business running.

It makes me wonder if the developers are providing this option because some part of the market wants it, or is there another reason for that? At the very least they don't seem to force you to use cloud backup, and as long as the code is open the user can build/verify them on their own. A wallet that doesn't provide offline backup is definitely not gonna make it.

As far as I can see on social media, some people seem to like convenience and are willing to trade security for it. Not sure if the demand is really big or not. Kinda unfortunate that most of us seem to not learn from others' mistakes and wait until something bad happened before we practice better security measures.

A quick glance at this wallet I read pretty well that nunchuk is a walletbuilt by Bitcoiners in the true Bitcoin spirit, Nunchuk offers multisig wallets, inheritance planning, advanced coin control, scheduled transactions, emergency locking and many other features to secure bitcoins You are protected and can be passed on to future generations1.

If it was still under development, I wouldn't try.

I have tried nunchuk wallet on android.
Sign in must be via email, in the wallet creation process, each user is required to enter an active email.
The nunchuk will send the password to the email that we registered for then change the password.

The seed generated in the process of creating a wallet in the nunchuk is 24 words.

I'm not comfortable if the process for making a wallet has to be like that and I dare not say that nunchuk wallets are good because they are still very new.

I agree with @BitMaxz that while we have security in a wallet like Electrum, then there is no desire to move to a new wallet.

Yes that is correct, if people can use centralized exchanges to store their BTC, surely they will make use of Ledger and their seed phrase recovery option, and also use wallets like Nunchuk that offer the option of cloud backup to store their seed phrase or keys; many people that lose their BTC do so because they chose convenience over security.
Sign in must be via email, in the wallet creation process, each user is required to enter an active email.
The nunchuk will send the password to the email that we registered for then change the password.
Signing up through email makes the process resemble that of a centralized service, why would i want to use a wallet that connects to my email and encourages people to use a wrong back up method, when i can easily run the electrum software and create a wallet easily without any of these.

Nunchuk requires an email and there is no way to make a wallet on this app without the email. So what's the point of collecting our email? Maybe because of their cloud service but it is still not safe to keep our private keys to any online storage.

I also check their PlayStore reviews most of the reviews look biased and fake the only real reviews there are those that give 1 star.

Yes, that's the reality when trying to open and see how the Android version of Nunchuk wallet.
The features are good but they need email from every user who wants to use it and for me personally that's where the lack of drawbacks.

Oh yes, besides having to include an email to create an account, Wallet Nunchuk is also allowed to register/create account in a guest on Android.

Correct. I also saw it.
Maybe because Nunchuk is still new as a wallet.

I've come across many positive reviews about AirGap Vault. When installed on an Android smartphone, it transforms the device into a system with security comparable to dedicated hardware wallets. I personally haven't tried AirGap Vault since my holdings are stored on Passport 2, but if the features described below are accurate, then this wallet certainly deserves the attention of Android fans

AirGap is far from perfect but I think it is much better option than using most other mobile wallets, and it is possibly better than using some popular closed source wallets.

If you already have old Android device collecting dust than it's much better to use it only for AirGap, but there are some limitations and you can't use ancient Android 4 and 5 I think, this was tested by myself ;)

If you ask me what smartphone is best, than I would say old deg00gled Pixel phone (Maybe Pixel 3 or 4) with GrapheneOS, than install Airgap.

I have experience with Airgap Vault it should be installed on a spare phone that doesn't have internet or never connect online and it pairs with the Airgap wallet where you can monitor your assets and make an unsigned transaction and generate a QR code it must be installed to an online device.

I do not have issues using their wallet and their open source code is updated but I never used it on Bitcoin yet(electrum is enough for me) except on ERC20 token and ETH and some mined coins before and I still have some assets remaining there. Until now my coins/tokens are still there and safe.

Since it supports most Coins BTC, ETH, etc... and tokens it is a good alternative for hardware wallets.

Don't you think the table has to be edited in terms of recent Ledger move to include 'recover' utility into their 'Social Security/Shamir' item?

Currently, for my everyday Android Bitcoin storage needs, I utilize BlueWallet. I never store a large BTC balance, so the basic features of BlueWallet suffice for the transactions I require. I find myself using BlueWallet more frequently as I interact with my smartphone every day.

As for my primary wallet for storing the majority of my balance, it's the PC version of Electrum. I occasionally check the safety of my balance, but it doesn't happen every day.

One feature that has proven useful on several occasions is BlueWallet's RBF (Replace-By-Fee) capability. I consider this a crucial feature for mobile wallets because we often need transactions to be processed quickly. By bumping the fee, it at least saves us transaction time in case of network congestion in the Bitcoin network.

Bluewallet is an almost perfect Bitcoin wallet android version based on my thoughts. There are many features available on the Bluewallet wallet, one of which is fee & transactions control.
We can read briefly about the fee & transactions control feature,

Provides you a fee estimation targeting confirmations in 10m, 3h or 1 day. With real time calculation on how much to spend. Ability to Bump and Cancel sent transactions with "Replace-by-fee" (RBF) or with "Child-pays-for-parent" (CPFP).

Multisig vault is another feature supported by Bluewallet. In release version v6.4.8 (https://github.com/BlueWallet/BlueWallet/releases/tag/v6.4.8), they fixed invalid cosigner when scanning cosigner during multisig vault setup.

No matter how great the Android version of the Bluewallet wallet is, don't dare use it as a wallet for storing large amounts of Bitcoin for security reasons.

Do you mean Ledger Recover? If yes, as far as I know, the status of Ledger Recover is still 'Coming soon' (https://www.ledger.com/recover (https://www.ledger.com/recover)).

At the bottom of the link from https://support.airgap.it/airgap-vault/comparison-of-airgap-vault-with-other-hardware-wallets/ (https://support.airgap.it/airgap-vault/comparison-of-airgap-vault-with-other-hardware-wallets/), there is an 'Edit this page (https://github.com/airgap-it/airgap-docs/edit/main/src/docs/airgap-vault/features/comparison.mdx)' button, and when I tried to open the link, the message appears: 'You need to fork this repository to propose changes'. In other words, anyone can propose changes to the table by forking the repository.

-snip-
No matter how great the Android version of the Bluewallet wallet is, don't dare use it as a wallet for storing large amounts of Bitcoin for security reasons.

I also suggested that. It could be that BlueWallet is still quite good as a wallet. However, the vulnerability of smartphones that are frequently connected to the internet can provide an opening for malware to enter, which has the potential to 'hijack' wallets.

It's not even just blue wallets that are vulnerable if the user's smartphone security is neglected and infected with malware.

some malware attacks such as the Xenomorph malware that was introduced a few months ago are able to penetrate any security including stealing the 2FA or OTP code of a wallet or account, sniffing SMS, and stealing hacking bank applications, etc.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5444480.msg61893757#msg61893757

Especially if it is only limited to wallet applications such as Blue Wallet and Electrum,
it can be done easily when the user's smartphone defenses are broken and invaded by malware.

Maybe the case I just experienced is a little unrelated to the discussion of wallet vulnerabilities that allow malware to enter so they can hijack wallets.

One of the browsers that I often use for browsing the internet, including occasionally using it to go online in forums, suddenly didn't work well. This just happened to me who had to use a laptop to log into the forum. The message that was given when I used the browser was that the Brave application had a bug which resulted in me having to uninstall and reinstall it if I wanted to use it again.

BlueWallet is indeed a good bitcoin wallet on Android and no problems have occurred to me so far. However, this will not provide complete guarantees for those who want to store Bitcoin for the long term and large amounts of assets considering that smartphones are very vulnerable compared to computers or laptops.

Are you describing the mobile version of Brave browser? Is the bug related to the Android app or the Android system itself? Or is your device infected with malware? I'm not sure how this bug is related to a wallet app though. While it is possible that a bug in the system makes multiple apps stop working, I've never experienced it myself on my Android phones.

While it is scary, users can avoid them as long as they are careful. Most malware distributions come from malicious apps, not to mention Google's security system is just terrible at filtering them. If you want to download a new app/wallet, verifying your app on the official website or distribution channel is a must these days.

Are you describing the mobile version of Brave browser?
Right, the Android version of Brave browser.

Is the bug related to the Android app or the Android system itself?
Looks like the problem is the Android application, not on the Android system.

Or is your device infected with malware?
My device is not infected with malware because other important applications installed are not problematic and run normally.

I'm not sure how this bug is related to a wallet app though. While it is possible that a bug in the system makes multiple apps stop working, I've never experienced it myself on my Android phones.
I think my Android device has a problem when the application I mean bounce off to the main screen automatically.
In short, I tried to start the Android device again and nothing was different.
The solution is I un-installed and re-uploaded and there are no more obstacles during the browser.

As I explained in the post above that unexpected events can make a wallet installed on mobile can be hijacked even though sometimes it has nothing to do with the wallet application.

User caution is the first protection before installing an app onto their device.
Certainly do not install applications obtained from the black market or third-party websites.

But even so, this Xenomorph malware acts as a trojan that hides in applications that look legitimate to use.
Therefore, Google Protect did not detect it because the attack used was relatively new.
But now Google Protect and several other antiviruses have made security improvements for the Xenomorph Malware type.

Also, pay attention to the permissions that will be requested by the application to be installed.
If the permissions ask for personal access such as SMS permissions, telephone, data access, camera, and other crucial access it is worth being suspicious.

It is a bit unfortunate that some people rely on Google to protect themselves. They are never proactive, and sometimes even make false positives when scanning wallet software on their store. It is a bit weird that malware pass their filters easily though. As always, people should always verify their apk files before they install it if possible, and stop searching through playstore if they want to download sensitive apps like crypto wallet, exchange, etc.

For multicurrency walelts Trust Wallet is also open source and it supports a wide variety of altcoins. It has an Android version:
https://trustwallet.com/download-page

This is high time to edit this post, buddy, since Trustwallet is not an open source app anymore. They became a closed-source app years ago. I was checking old comments regarding the best Android wallet and saw your post and then realized the post is old.

I was using Electrum for my Android, too. But recently, the update made it almost unusable.
For example, I cannot use coin control; I'm unsure if it was available in an older version. QR code scan does not work. Overall, it does not look good anymore, and I don't want to use an older version. I am looking for another good Bitcoin wallet. How is BlueWallet these days?

I believe samourai to be one of the best wallets out there in terms of connectivity to own node. I have tried connecting it to my dojo node and it worked flawlessly. Apart from that it supports coin control which is a must for me. And it also has a built in implementation of whirlpool mixing.

The only problem I had was that I couldn't maintain more than one wallets simultaneously. Am I wrong?

I haven't tried this wallet yet. I installed Bluewallet this morning but did not create a wallet yet. I also need the coin control feature in my wallet, If Bluewallet already has that, I don't have to switch to another wallet. Are there any Bluewallet users here who have been using this wallet for a long time? I do not have any node, and I have no idea how it works.

The mixing feature seems interesting to me. I would love to try that as well. I don't know how it works but I have used several Bitcoin mixer websites before. Does the mixing feature same as like mixing service websites?

The reason why it still relies on Google is because the majority of Android users will definitely use all Google products.
Malware that escapes Google's monitoring also has several new methods to get in, we can't fully blame it.
But yes Google has full responsibility for securing all kinds of applications in the Play Store.

And for crypto wallets, I never download directly from the Play Store,
but it is highly recommended to visit the official website to get a legitimate application and can avoid malware applications.

For example, I cannot use coin control; I'm unsure if it was available in an older version. QR code scan does not work. Overall, it does not look good anymore, and I don't want to use an older version. I am looking for another good Bitcoin wallet. How is BlueWallet these days?

BlueWallet is also a good choice, but I still use Electrum because I have been a user since the beginning of Electrum ad
and some of the UI updates have completely changed it.

But for QR codes to work normally, you may need to update or delete and install them again.

The mixing feature seems interesting to me. I would love to try that as well. I don't know how it works but I have used several Bitcoin mixer websites before. Does the mixing feature same as like mixing service websites?

Not really. The mixing services websites like the one in my signature facilitate the process but the keep it under the hood. So essentially you just send to an address that the website provides you and you put a receiving address where you receive the mixed funds.

Now in regards to Whirlpool, it is very well explained in their docs https://docs.samourai.io/whirlpool

So grab a cup of coffee and with some patience, you will eventually get there.

Personally I mainly use whirlpool with my sparrow wallet which has it plugged in. But since the op question was about mobile wallets, I can't recommend it in this topic.

Hello, I've read your entire topic, and I'd like to share my opinion with you, I'd like to suggest Trust Wallet as one of the best wallets I've used It has an amazing work plan, is highly secure, and offers a great deal of privacy. With its 12-word system  you can create a strong account and  that you can't be hacked or  something else . Your money is kept safe and under your control; you just need to safeguard those 12 words While there are other wallets available .Trust Wallet is the best choice for me.

Trust wallet is the best wallet because it gives you full control of your Bitcoin, and it has multi-currency options. But I don't think they are trusted enough because once Binance takes over Trust Wallet, they become a closed-source wallet app. You have no option to check what changes they made in their coding and if they have something bad in it.

Other expert Bitcoiners suggest not to use Trust Wallet. You can use other open-source wallet app/software that is open source. So I don't use Trust Wallet and Do not recommend anyone to use it either.

Trust wallet is owned by binance, so i don't agree with you that you get a great deal of privacy when you use this wallet. Trust wallet is a closed source wallet that lies in their website that they are open source, and that is another reason not to trust this wallet. It is a self custodial wallet, but of what use is it being self custodial when you cannot verify how the keys were generated, and this is another reason not to use Trust wallet. It is worth mentioning that since Trust wallet is a multi-coin wallet, i don't care if you use it to hold shitcoins, but do not use it as a BTC wallet when there are better open source solutions like Sparrow, Electrum and BlueWallet.

Pardon me, but do you evaluate the wallet software only by the UI? Because, frankly, that is the only part of Trust wallet that I would find kinda appealing.

It is one of the worst pieces of wallet software in the Bitcoin ecosystem by far. It is closed-source, relies on somebody else's server to operate, and it owned by Binance. The three musketeers of a recipe for disaster in crypto space. Look on what happened with Atomic wallet. People lost fortunes and the developers didn't even tell us what went wrong. Re-installing a similar software is a sign of recklessness and lack of responsibility, simply put.

Close sourced wallets are one of the worst kinds of wallet you can suggest here, whether they are custodial or noncustodial

It's seem you are just into the game but just so you know, closed source wallets have had issues in the past and what happens is people realize about a bug or hack when it's too late.
Take an example of Atomic wallet hack (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5454994.msg62349200#msg62349200). Up to today, the team behind the wallet has never been transparent about what happened.
Just search about the likes of coinomi, Jaxx wallet, exodus etc.

Like you I also think trust wallet is the most secure because this trust wallet supports all platform tokens.
More than 60 million people worldwide are using this trust wallet However, Trust Wallet is a proprietary wallet of Binance. Moreover you can use these android wallets. eToro,

Trust wallet being a multicoin wallet doesn't mean it is secure, i would not even think of storing my BTC's in the same wallet as shitcoins. Do you also know how many people use Binance exchange, does it make it safe to store your funds? If you do not know, then take note that if you are looking for a good wallet, you check if it is open source, self custodial, well reviewed and recommended, and for the fact that Trust wallet is owned by Binance is probably another reason to be careful and not trust it.
Moreover you can use these android wallets. eToro,
Exodus, Electrum, Mycelium,Coinbase Wallet.
Exodus is closed source, Coinbase wallet is closed source and owned by an exchange, eToro isn't a wallet, but a brokerage company, don't store your funds in the wallet they have in their platform, Mycelium is not so recommended. Electrum is the only recommended wallet in that list.

So there are lot so many people who still doesn't know how secured wallet really is.
Plus, having huge user based doesn't mean it's totally secured, look at the technicalities how closed based wallets are usually hack and prone to bugs.

I'm quite confused. Based on your post history you clearly know that a noncustodial wallet is the better choice and custodial or closed source wallet should be avoided if possible. Your recommendation clearly does not align with your post history. Did you just learn them recently or do you not know that some of these are closed source? I'd suggest you to edit your post since it doesn't seem like you're foreign with good security practices.

So far, the wallet I've found most comfortable to use is BlueWallet. Yep... like someone who didn't know much about wallets when first time got into Bitcoin, I used popular wallets like Coinbase (3 years) and TrustWallet (3 years). Basic learning left me revisiting wallet security because I had experienced a breach in an online created altcoin wallet, so.. decided to re-evaluate the security of my crypto balance and wallet security.

Since some more knowledgeable folks in the local sub forum were using BlueWallet, I didn't hesitate to give it a try. Up to now, I've gotten used to using BlueWallet for sending and receiving transactions. It's super convenient with its compact features. And just to note, I keep only a small portion of my balance in my Android wallet. This is to ensure the security of my funds because my mobile device is my daily communication tool.

So you are using a hot wallet with BlueWallet. You can also use it as a watch only wallet and monitor an xpub that derives from your hardware wallet.

Basically BW is good because it allows multiple wallets. It has coin control and multiple other features.

What I don't like however is that it is very unstable when connecting to my own node.

Have you reported it to their support or asked on their thread? As long as the connection between your device and your node is okay, there should be no problem. What kind of instability are you facing? It would be weird if a connection to other nodes is better compared to your node unless it is hosted on the cloud (VPS, etc) and not on the same network. CMIIW.

In order to get it to work, I need to mandatorily use Orbot. Otherwise it won't connect at all. Now, if I use Orbot, it is ultra slow and it doesn't show the proper balance. I keep refreshing but it doesn't change.

To be honest I haven't reported because I don't use it anymore. For mobile, I use Sentinel (and sometimes Samourai) connected to my own Dojo server. This setup runs flawlessly.

BlueWallet is a very good and recommended BTC wallet and i can say you are using your wallet in the right way, because anything online is surely vulnerable to attack and so our online wallets should only hold a small amount of our funds. The larger portion of your funds should either be in a hardware wallet or in an airgapped wallet for better security.

BlueWallet is a good upgrade to Coinomi which is a closed source wallet with little to no activity from their developers. A little question though, since you have switched from Coinomi to BlueWallet, which is a BTC-only wallet, i am curious why you have been using a wallet like Coinomi to store your BTC's. I can understand if you use it for shitcoins that are worth little, but surely not BTC when there are far too many better alternatives out there. I would recommend that you move your funds to a fresh wallet created in BlueWallet, instead of restoring your wallet in BlueWallet with your Coinomi seed phrase.

I have been using Electrum for a while to store my Bitcoin, and I was planning to switch to another open-source wallet app. I have installed Blue Wallet, too. But I am also using my Electrum wallet on my Android device. Usually, I do not store alts. But sometimes, I had to get some TRX and USDT, too. I am currently using Centralized exchanges to receive and change them later. Mostly, I do not hold alts. But I want to know what other wallet you guys suggest to store alts? I used Trust Wallet before. But I came to see that they are closed-source apps. Other than this, it's been a good wallet. Is there a better alternative to Trust Wallet?

You are right that Trust wallet is closed source, so Unstoppable wallet is a good alternative to Trust wallet if you are looking for an open source multi-coin wallet. Though unstoppable wallet is a recommended wallet to store your altcoins, they do not support as many coins as Trust wallet does, but you can take a look at the coins they support to see if it is okay for you. Unstoppable wallet also supports extending your seed phrase with a passphrase, which is an extra layer of security, and this is something you cannot do with trust wallet.

Thanks for the suggestion, mate. I have heard about the Unstoppable wallet before, but I have never tried it, and I guess I haven't seen many discussions about it. Open-source wallets should be promoted more rather than closed-source apps. Still, if you ask someone what a good wallet app to store multiple altcoins along with Bitcoin is, Most people suggest Trust Wallet because they don't know the better alternative, and some don't even know if it's an open-source or a closed-source app. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I will install it and try it myself. If I face any issues, can I DM you?

Must have accidentally missed the discussion about Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5436273.0).

Open-source wallets should be promoted more rather than closed-source apps.

You are right that one should find out the function of open source and closed source wallets so as to differentiate between the two.
In this context, one must also be careful about open source recognition from the wallet so that the wallet has unknowingly turned into a closed source or open source wallet recognition is only an appearance to carry out actions that can harm wallet users.

Still, if you ask someone what a good wallet app to store multiple altcoins along with Bitcoin is, Most people suggest Trust Wallet because they don't know the better alternative, and some don't even know if it's an open-source or a closed-source app.

Most of those who asked questions and those who answered did not have time to read and discuss better wallet alternatives from TrustWallet.
For those who want to get answers about a good wallet after receiving answers to the questions asked, they should study or explore in more detail regarding the level of good wallets recommended.

I was here to tell you that unstoppable wallet does not meet my needs, but then I clicked on the link you provided. I checked the video the OP provided, and it seems unstoppable wallet already supports many chains and coins. I have to enable the coins to see them in my GUI. I didn't understand it at first, and I was kind of disappointed to see only a couple of choices of alts there.

I was about to choose Guarda or Safepal, but I guess I won't have to. I heard safepal become open source but I cannot trust coin telegraph. Also, Guarda claims they are partially open source. Thanks for providing the link.

I would recommend that you move your funds to a fresh wallet created in BlueWallet, instead of restoring your wallet in BlueWallet with your Coinomi seed phrase.

That should not be a recommendation but a MUST DO thing when you are changing your wallet due to any reason/issue in the previous wallet. If you simply import the Coinomi seed phrase to the blue wallet, your seed phrases will remain with the Coinomi (as being a closed source you never know how they are handling the seed phrases).

I think Electrum is the best bitcoin wallet around, and you can use its android version. And works fast too

Electrum may be the best bitcoin wallet for desktop but its Android version has very limited functionality. Although it will serve the purpose, but why not use the blue wallet on the Android phone instead?

You can probably check their GitHub to see the code. As far as I know, they don't fully share their code. Firmware etc is yet open, although IIRC the news said that it is ongoing and should happen in the fourth quarter. Heck, even their X1 still has nothing on the repository albeit being called the culmination of their open-source motivation. I guess what they refer to open-source is entirely limited to their wallet suite, whatever that is.

Yep. As far as I heard, their latest hardware wallet is open-source, but I couldn't find any detailed information about it. If they build an open-source hardware wallet, is there any possibility they can publish the software/app codes, too? I guess we don't know this yet. That sucks. Is it illegal as in owning anything will get you in jail, or using it for payment is not allowed but you can still own it? In my country, it is the latter and we can buy and sell any crypto gadgets just fine. If you want to set up a cold wallet you probably can do it with Electrum and a live OS, or an air-gapped device like a disconnected PC/laptop. There are tutorials on this forum if you want to read it further. It should be safer compared to using an open-source wallet on an Android phone if cold storage is what you need. CMIIW.

Since crypto is illegal here, owning anything related to crypto means you are a crypto user and are likely to get arrested for further investigation. No shops in Bangladesh sell any crypto-related gadgets. Computer users could buy GPUs to mine ETH (back then) because they were parts for computers, which is not exclusive to crypto.

But if you talk about ASIC miners or hardware wallets exclusively for crypto, you will likely get arrested if they notice. But I believe almost 40% of the young people in Bangladesh use crypto secretly.

It is quite troublesome if your country does not provide any support for crypto,
even to the point of saying that the use of crypto in your country will be considered a crime.

There is no freedom, or better regulation on the use of crypto.
I am still lucky to be in Indonesia that makes Bitcoin a commodity asset and is not banned completely.

And regarding the purchase of GPUs for mining, it will be an instrument as a support for mining crypto.
But whether your government will examine that much detail, certainly not.

ASICs may already be too common an item for crypto mining, especially if you buy them from abroad,
this will certainly be held back, and you will be in trouble.

But if you talk about ASIC miners or hardware wallets exclusively for crypto, you will likely get arrested if they notice. But I believe almost 40% of the young people in Bangladesh use crypto secretly.
40% of young Bangladeshis are aware that they need to be more advanced and cannot be restricted due to legal issues with crypto use.

Yes. I consider you lucky, too. Some countries ban bizarre things. I hope this won't soon become Korea. Bangladesh banned cryptocurrency. Freedom of speech is getting tightened every day. You cannot post anything on social media. They monitor our social media, too.

One thing I have noticed is that, it's usually developing nations who are keen on banning/thwarting crypto, while developed nations are busy creating/improving regulations.

If developing countries wanna get better, at least follow footsteps of developed nations. A mere fair tax laws with freedom for crypto to flourish will give government tax revenue and happy citizens.

Lack of understanding likely contributes to such decisions.

That's what's happening right now, every coconut country has their own rules.
But I am lucky to live in Indonesia, with crypto rules that are not too strict, and even the government provides crypto regulation as a commodity asset that allows us crypto users to trade it legally, but should not be used as a means of payment.

Developed countries have their own vision and mission for crypto, building their own and taking part in the management of a more advanced crypto ecosystem.
Support like this will make the future of crypto better.

If developing countries wanna get better, at least follow footsteps of developed nations. A mere fair tax laws with freedom for crypto to flourish will give government tax revenue and happy citizens.

It's not that those who ban crypto aren't completely lacking in understanding crypto, they've certainly done research on whether their country can implement crypto.
Or if it threatens their security and economic circumstances, they will ban it.

But there are also those who ban because their rottenness does not want to be exposed and tracked by anyone,
because crypto with Blockchain technology will provide a History that can never be erased, that's what they are afraid of actually.

Not bad choice  for Android fans is  non-custodial Simple Bitcoin Wallet (SBW)  (https://sbw.app/)with open-source and reproducible code.

Among various  advanced options I would highlight the following: coin control, RBF&CPFP, hardware wallets  and watching mode support, ability of QR communication on the base of Uniform Resources standard.
