Title: [POLL] What altcoins will survive the next 12 months?
Post by: nzminer on April 16, 2014, 05:26:40 AM
So many coins have been launched over the last year, but how many are just going to be a craze that dies off or just poor development, ive tried to select some of the most popular altcoins, and ones i feel will be around for some time.
If you can think of any others to add, please let me know. :)

For me

Lite (pretty clear, well known)
Doge (bobsled team, going nascar)
Quark (bringing Crypto into gaming scene)
Vert

Because these are amongst the coins that are really working on infrastructure.

you really should add gridcoin in that list.

Gridcoin has behind a very good dev and a strong community. Also is real innovative coin, with its PoB (proof of Boinc)

I would suggest including Cryptogenic Bullion. Has been around almost a whole year already and is NOT going away.

Pesetacoin would be my first guess, followed by Blackcoin. There will be a number of others that will do well too, but I would place these at the head of the list.

Anoncoin is for 11 months already, and the development of technical innovations like own zerocoin implementation(I think zerocoin testnet will come this week) and native i2p are speeding up.

However the results so far on the poll are in line with what im expecting.

Some of these coins might stick around just because of their big communities and such, like dogecoin and litecoin.  But NXT definitely has the most to offer as far as innovation and technology, not to mention it's strong community and very strong development.  Others like NEM and Ethereum might have a lot to offer in the future, but Nxt already has a good head start and a lot cool things are happening behind the scenes.

Blackcoin, people? Really???  Could someone please care to explain to me what is so special about blackcoin, other than the logo and it's the latest pump.  I mean come on, NXT has or is going to have:

Decentralized Asset Exchange
Alias system
Arbitrary messaging
A Digital Goods store
Multigateway
A Turing-complete complete scripting layer (Automated Transactions) that will allow for things like DACs/trustless escrow
Indirect mining
Coins being built on top of Nxt
And even games being developed right now that will use either a Nxt asset or NXT as an in-game currency.

Again, tell me what's so special about Blackcoin, please?

Your transaction fee is also 1 NXT which is changing to 0.1 NXT soon. That's great, but I'm never going to use NXT to trade because of that. So NXT can be the next PoS Peercoin, Blackcoin will be the next PoS BTC or PoS LTC.

I am interested in the Nxt algorithm, but, Seriously, all you Nxt fanboys do you not realize your founder and guiding light BCNext has abandoned you.  Look in the Nxt wiki: http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/BCNext%27s_Plan
Part Three, first two sentences of next to last paragraph, "BCNext has departed permanently. He doesn't feel responsible for the future of Nxt."
and last two sentences of last paragraph, "You are left on your own. Good luck."

You are all in a bus going down the highway and your driver just jumped out!

That's like saying BTC is a bus going down the highway without a driver because Satoshi isn't on board anymore...  Jean-Luc has been the lead core developer now for months, and things are going along nicely.  Not to mention the numerous other developers working on all the above mentioned.

NXT the next Peercoin and BC the next BTC??? LOL.  No, you got that completely backwards.  Blackcoin is the clone of Peercoin (actually, it's a clone of Novacoin I believe, which is a fork of Peercoin).  NXT is the one written from scratch in Java.  You noobs seriously need to start researching a little better before investing in these shitcoins, instead of just following the hype.

It's current distribution is better than Bitcoin's, and it gets better every day.  It has an indirect mining pool as well at hashrate.org

I don't know who came up with the idea of indirect mining first.  I know the nxt community had the idea like a month or so ago.  But maybe blackcoin did orginate it.... but so what?  Any of these PoS coins could start an indirect mining pool.  Tell me about the REAL innovations blackcoin will feature... Will it have a decentralized asset exchange?  Automated Transtactions?  Multigateways?  Games being built using the blockchain?.... Or is Blackcoin just another pumped up hype like all these others?  I suspect the latter.

Blackcoin's distribution was terrible...it was instamined. BC had a 1-week distribution period where 99% of the money supply was instamined by the creators who paid to rent out all of the hashpower and mine all of the coins, then since they controlled almost the entire money supply they traded back and forth with themselves pumping the price and trading volume.

Mintcoin actually has the best distribution of these style coins as it was released first, and was the most profitable coin to mine while it was still mineable, has already great merchant adoption. Don't be fooled by the pump and dumps.

Mint has 700M coin premine, and you accuse BC of being instamined?!

BC = No premine

I mined BC at day one, I've never seen a better launch in crypto.  Everyone had a chance to mine,  And also buy with prices as low as 500 sats, for DAYS on end.

I heard the devs of blackcoin actually rented a 1TH farm to instamine over 81 million coins. That's not to mention the premine they got and never did any community projects with. I'm definitely backing Mint as its economics are superior in every way. I mean, what would you want: 20% more coins in interest per year or 1% more coins per year? Mintcoin is the future. Just look at those charts, investors love the Mint!

I'm not going to trade a currency that has ridiculous transaction fees like NXT. Look at NXT transaction volume on exchanges, it's terrible for having such a high market cap. So will all those things you describe require me to send NXT? Because eventually I'll lose my entire stash sending NXT back and forth.

I'm saying I see NXT as the PoS Peercoin. The PoS altcoin that tries to be a niche and does well. But I see everyone using BC for general transaction. Can an altcoin be great because of it's simplicity? We're about to find out.

I've got some NXT because I was curious, not enough for it to be considered an investment. Now I've got some I can only really see one use for it, and it may be important. The problem with all other cryptos is that you are NEVER going to read out your address, or transcribe an address, over the phone, with NXT though you can. But the client would have to become much better packaged to reach this niche.  Also I don't see 'everyone' using BC for general transactions just because it is the 'hot' coin for quick trades now.

Dude, really?  Yeah, you might lose your entire stash if all you bothered to get was 50 nxt.  Are you a teenager?  Nxt is currently under 3 cents, and like you mentioned earlier, the fee is being lowered soon.  The only reason it wasn't done sooner is because it's been a technical challenge adding decimal places because, like I said, it was written from scratch, unlike Blackcoin.

LOL...I think you have your facts mixed up. MintCoin was pre-mined and the dev dumped many of his coins long time ago. Please tell me how could the BlackCoin devs trade back and forth between themselves to fabricate $1,839,352 in trade volume? You and other conspiracists have to wake up and face reality....MintCoin is dead. Your trade volume on Mintpal is 13 BTC a day, the value of the coin keeps deflating, and there is nothing new or exciting on the horizon for MintCoin. MintCoin will never be widely adopted and because of that the price will eventually deflate to single digit sat. That is why MintCoin is in 27th place and BlackCoin is in 9th place.

Blackcoin has been doing well as of right now, no-one is arguing about that. It's doing well at a time when many coins with real innovative features, or positive social ambitions, are not performing very well at market. It's gotten far with multipools, price pumps, and shills that hate on other coins and post lots of funny gifs and memes. But when the honeymoon is over no-one is going to remain loyal to Blackcoin. And it isn't going to go on to attract investors from outside of this sandbox either, the community just looks like a cesspool from the outside.

BlackCoin, because NXT was a good idea ruined by the worst distribution in the history of crypto.

The premine has not been dumped, a portion of it is finally getting touched for the first time to work on a few projects. There are a lot of exciting things on the horizon for Mint and I am sure for BC too. Good luck to you just stop with the bashing and FUDing.
Oh and theoretically it could be possible to manipulate the market by trading back and forth, not saying that BC has done that though.

LTC
PPC
NXT
NEM
EXO

the last two are still under development. But in my eyes each of them have a tremendous chance to become a powerful and longterm coin in top 10.

LOL at all those rumors and btw it's only ~74.5 mil coins right now  ;D

Blackcoin has been doing well as of right now, no-one is arguing about that. It's doing well at a time when many coins with real innovative features, or positive social ambitions, are not performing very well at market. It's gotten far with multipools, price pumps, and shills that hate on other coins and post lots of funny gifs and memes. But when the honeymoon is over no-one is going to remain loyal to Blackcoin. And it isn't going to go on to attract investors from outside of this sandbox either, the community just looks like a cesspool from the outside.

So the BlackCoin card isn't innovative? http://blackcoincard.com

And no offense to the other coins, but if what we are doing is so trivial and not very innovative, why haven't Mint and other coins been able to duplicate our success? You guys tried a multi-pool..what happened with that? I am sure someone will try to copy the BlackCoin card next, but the card actually takes ingenuity and resources to implement. You can't just copy that idea :)...

LOL

As usual, everybody is 'upping' the coin they are most heavily 'invested' in.

YAWN! Change the music, the dance floor is empty ;)

The (sad) truth is, the 'survivors' will be the coins that the whales decide will live.

And that will be a combination of those that THEY have a big stake in, and the ones they can still amuse themselves with by manipulation to make a quick buck out of all the 'bait-fish'.

The only ones that can hope to have some 'protection' from this are the ones where there is very good reason for the smaller investors (like most of US!) to stay committed for the long haul.

To me, that means the ones that have an inviting PoS & the ones that will remain profitable to mine free from the 'big boys' - If you've done your homework that means the 'honest' X-11 derivatives.

WAKE UP!

The 'ordinary citizens' of this place are being fucked with just as badly as governments, corporations, banks, faiths, the media et al are fucking with you in the 'real world'.

Maybe worse, this place is the new 'wild west' only there are no good sheriffs on white horses to save yer asses.

For as long as you are only here for what you can make, you remain mere 'prey', willing future victims to the truly unscrupulous who have ZERO concern except how quickly they can bleed you dry.

 - You may as well put a dotted line across your throats with the instruction 'Cut Here'.

Blackcoin a winner.

It's also designed to be investor friendly. Litecoin, Bitcoin and other have thousands of newly mined coins dumped onto the market everyday causing CONSTANT downward pressure on the price.

With Blackcoin, there is no such pressure.

Always bet on black.

I agree that blackcoin is a good choice, but your signature having 2 clearly false statements in it, gives you bad credibility.
BC is in fact not the fastest coin. It is rather slow compared to most.
BC was in fact not first pure PoW&PoS to PoS coin.

Please adjust accordingly.

Blackcoin, purely on the basis that in terms of features it is at least on par (I would say superior) with Litecoin which seems fairly established.

I see BC/LTC parity coming within the year if not in months.

Edit: I know nothing about code or computer science

imo The only thing that will hold BC back is it's name - and that could be a BIG problem in the world outside this forum.

Blackcoin will surely last and will soon pass LTC in every indicator, you can write that down. Besides that and unfortunately for some hard working dev teams, I have to agree.. there is no place for so many coins.

Blackcoin - because as one of the people bringing this currency to the High Street on June 1st, I can honestly and confidently say that the competition has a long way to go to match the effort of the Blackcoin movement in bringing it the real world as is happening right now.

Many things have been promised by other coins and some coins do very well in fulfilling their claims. But for one reason or another they falter and in many cases fail. I agree there's many good ideas out there right now, but as far as really delivering the promise of everyday transaction ability..... very few really can boast that.

Blackcoin will, and already is delivering.

It's always easier to bash when you cant see behind the scenes.
It would also be easy to bash other coins to make Blackcoin look better.
But why bother, those of us who are seriously invested, not necessarily directly in the coin, and are making things happen dont need to belittle the competition or constantly seek approval. We really dont have time.

Blackcoin will grow and develop. There will be people that enjoy the ride and others that wont.

Finally. Many coins in that list will do well for their own reasons and I wish them well. Its always important to innovate. Bring new ideas and technologies to the table. Blackcoin is just another, albeit one of the more successful, coins that aims to make a genuine difference.

Well it seems that many people are ignorant to the fact that their precious coins may already be dead if it was not for the developer/s of Megacoin.

Megacoin development included the KGW algorythm and pretty much most alt coins have implemented that too now. Over 250 coins use the KGW and many of them would be dead as a doornail without it.

Megacoin developers have something very exciting coming in the next month. the coin is about as legit as they come.

6 months ago all script coins were basically Litecoin clones with a couple of tweaks...

Now all script coins are basically litecoin/megacoin clones...

It astounds me how ungreatful the altcoin community in general has been to Kimoto and megacoin for essentially allowing their coins to live through multi pools and the forthcoming script asic surge. There is a damned good reason these coins adopted the KGW... and what thanks did Kimoto get? Very little.

Megacoin will rise. Do not miss the boat!

[Nxt] has an indirect mining pool as well at hashrate.org

I wonder where indirect mining came from. Surely not the useless BlackCoin? :P

The first payout for hashrate.org, Nxt's indirect mining pool, was a week before bcmultipool.com opened.

Sometimes an idea is discovered by groups independently.  It happens so often in the sciences that it has a name: multiple independent-discovery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiple_discoveries).

+1. Coins should not be more popular simply because they are older. The appeal of LTC was to make an ASIC-resistant coin, which it is not anymore; it should not still have its place has the biggest altcoin. Bitcoin mining is also flawed since it takes so much ressource and centralization is a problem; the future is for PoS like Peercoin.

I vote for Mintcoin because it is actually making efforts to have an impact in the real-world: http://mintcoinfund.org/
The community is strong and full of people who are in it for more than making a quick buck.
Also, Mintcoin might be the first to have a fully functional (and secure) PoS android wallet. Which will be open source and benefit all PoS coins.

I think Fluttercoin (PoW/PoS/PoT hybrid) should be added to the list, I doubt it will get the votes it deserves because it seems like few people know about or appreciate it but I think it deserves a lot more recognition considering it is one of the first truly innovative coins since PoS was invented. I mean, it invented and utilizes an entirely new reward system (Proof-of-Transaction) that helps incentivize spending/using of the coin- this is the perfect counterpart for PoS systems since PoS generally incentivizes saving/holding.

I mean, it invented an entirely new reward system (Proof-of-Transaction) that helps incentivize spending/using of the coin- this is the perfect counterpart for PoS systems since PoS incentivizes saving/holding.

How can the android wallet work for PoS, with a blockchain that's already so big?

I vote for Mintcoin because it is actually making efforts to have an impact in the real-world: http://mintcoinfund.org/
The community is strong and full of people who are in it for more than making a quick buck.

I'm no technical expert you would have to ask paspi, he is the person working on it. He probably won't disclose everything until it is done, and he shouldn't, since he has been putting a lot of work into it and would like to be the first to release such a wallet.

I really think fluttercoin will have exploded by then

Proof of transaction really brings something new to the table.

Just saw this. I agree. Fluttercoin is the only truly technologically innovative coin I see on the market. The potential effect that PoT could have on the economics of the coin is very interesting IMHO.

Ok thanks. It's intriguing, I'll follow the news about this.

fluttercoin does indeed look interesting, its a good way to encourage distribution.
2014 is going to be the year we see coins switch to POS and POT, and perhaps x11 mining, all these ASIC farms cant just keep running forever, its a ridiculous amount of energy needed to keep something like this alive.
Have added it to the poll.

Too bad we can't choose more than 1, or prioritize. My list (based on a combination of factors) might look something like this:
1. Blackcoin
2. Pesetacoin
3. Darkcoin
4. Fluttercoin

I'm surprised how little I hear in terms of development and promotion for litecoin. Seems like the only advantage it has is that it was among the first clones of bitcoin. If I could short it I would. Even dogecoin or mintcoin likely has more staying power than LTC.

1. NEM-coin
2. EXO-coin
3. NXT-coin
4. BC
5. PPC
6. LTC
7. NMC

I dont think litecoin has much future, its difficulty has dropped significantly, although once ASICS become more common, everyone will direct their hashpower at it as a quick pump and dump. I dont see any advantage with LTC other than its faster than bitcoin and was ASIC proof at the time.

There are many coins all with good features, i feel that we will see probably POS coins being the most successful in the long term, but here is my list of coins that i feel will have major success:
1: NXT
2:Blackcoin
3:Darkcoin
4:Megacoin

Fluttercoin is too new to judge its potential, as goes with stabilityshares.
I think we will see Doge being around for some time, but dont know high it will reach.

I recently built a small position in HoboNickels.

After doing some research I found the fundamentals, community and developers very solid compared to the marketcap. It is a hybrid PoW (scrypt) & PoS coin with an attractive stake reward. So I'll mainly use it for PoS mining over the next year or so.

...Also I guess I got a bit tired of the 'coin' postfix :)

My view is that Litecoin is still regarded as the "standard" to which script based coins are benchmarked. So I don't think it will go away anytime soon. :)

Do altcoins really need a scrypt standard? Since their value already systematically follows that of BTC anyway.

There are so many coins to choose from i wish i could see into the future to know what ones to invest in .
I think NXT will be adopted eventually, and that POS coins will supersede mining coins.
Look at blackcoin and darkcoin seem to be doing well.
Dont know if megacoin is a pump and dump or if it will actually succeed as a serious currency.

Not much clones, if any.
Only coins that are more like a platform have potential.

The next 12 months?

1. Litecoin (LTC)

This was the first scrypt coin and will obviously be around in the next 12 months.

In addition, USD account verifications begin tomorrow at Cryptsy.com. I think Litecoin is likely to see a spike in price/volume once the USD markets get into full swing. This is because investors will want to move directly into LTC to trade the LTC pairs.

2. Dogecoin (DOGE)

This coin has a marketing engine that shows no signs of slowing.

I think this coin probably has a good chance of becoming number two behind bitcoin over the short term. The USD markets open soon at Cryptsy which will play directly into the hands of Dogecoin. This is because new investors exposed to the Dogecoin marketing engine will be able to move directly from USD into Dogecoin.

3. Goldcoin (GLD)

Goldcoin will be celebrating her first birthday in just two days. Another 12 months will be no problem.

With the new client supporting multiple currencies, it will interesting to see how things shape up. People will not only be able to keep Bitcoin in their GLD wallet, the wallet will perform much faster than the current Bitcoin QT. I think once the code is published there will be a new-found appreciation for the talented Goldcoin lead developer.

http://altcoinpress.com/2014/04/java-client-to-put-multiple-coins-into-a-single-wallet/

And again, the name Goldcoin is preferred over all other coins by newcomers. The Cryptsy USD markets will give this coin a surge by making it easier for these newcomers to move their fiat into GLD.

This voting isn't represantive at all...

You've chosen just some coins but not all existing coins, so you lead all users to a certain selection.

Ive tried to weed out all the crapcoins, i tried to add some of the most popular coins, even alot that i have no interest in.
TBH im quite surprised how many votes blackcoin got, it is a good coin, but not that good, i think silkcoin will be far better.

For next few months, there will be NXT, DOGE and DRK.

Dark is rising, NXT also but slowly n DOGE is trump coin all the time.

Doge is the best first coin for Noobs, i doubt it will reach 1c though.
Ive added 2 more coins that look pretty decent.
There's lots of coins that are pretty popular, but i dont think will be around long term.

NXT will be king eventually, but could take 5 years or more.

Dogecoin is the only one on the list that I feel is going to keep up there, and that's because the community is actively marketing it on a constant basis.

I had hope for Worldcoin, too, but that doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

You should add all the longest working altcoins, the new ones are much higher gamble if these can live one year.

I say the longer the altcoin is working already, the higher chance working another 12 months

And DRK, with the full anonymous Darksend, i think that's promising
