Title: Boxing Fans... Top 10 Pound for Pound? (updated 6/16/2017) & betting discussions
Post by: keithers on April 30, 2014, 11:25:55 PM
Hey all...are there any boxing fans out there?  Big fight this weekend with Mayweather Jr. Vs Maidana.   Did any of you place any bets?   Mayweather is heavy favorite and will probably win by wide Unanimous Decision, but I put in a long shot bet on Maidana because of his punching power and he was +850 when I put my bet in.

If Maidana wins, I win a pretty good amount of money :)

Khan is probably going to lose again, and ruin his chances for the Mayweather sweepstakes as well...lol

As of 6/11/2014 here is my top 10 P4P List...  (they are all up for debate)

1) Floyd Mayweather Jr.
2) Manny Pacquiao
3) Andre Ward
4) Timothy Bradley
5) Juan Manuel Marquez
6) Miguel Cotto
7) Guillermo Rigondeaux
8 ) Gennady "GGG" Golovkin
9) Wladimir Klitschko
10) Roman Gonzalez

#10 is highly debatable, as Mikey Garcia could easily be there.  Erislandy Lara, is also definitely on his way up, and Canelo Alvarez is working his way towards the top 10.   Obviously Bernard Hopkins could arguably be on this list.

Edit 6/11/2014:   Miguel Cotto into the top 10 after dominating Sergio Martinez (now out of top 10) in lineal middleweight title fight.
Edit 9/18/2014:  Roman Gonzalez replaces Danny Garcia in #10 slot after his recent win, and Garcia's pitiful selection of opponent in Rod Salka.  Andre Ward moves down a slot due to inactivity.  Mikey Garcia slipping further out of the top 10 also due to inactivity.

Approaching the top 10 is Sergey Kovalev and Terrence Crawford with their strong 2014 years.  Kovalev could possibly fill the #10 slot if he dethrones Bernard Hopkins in their light heavyweight title fight in November 2014

It has been a few years, so now I am going to make an update to the P4P list as of 6/16/2017

1) Gennady "GGG" Golovkin
2) Andre Ward*   (only bc he got a gift decision over Kovalev IMO)
3) Vasyl Lomechenko
4) Terrence Crawford
5) Sergey Kovalev
6) Roman Gonzalez* (could still be #1 but lost controversial decision)
7) Canelo Alvarez
8 ) Keith Thurman
9) Errol Spence Jr.
10) Manny Pacquiao *dropping due to inactivity

#1 is clearly debatable...a lot will be determined in the following months depending on Ward vs Kovalev 2 as well as Canelo vs. GGG.
Errol Spence's TKO stoppage of Kell Brook I believe propels him into the P4P discussion.  Spence Jr. vs. Keith Thurman or Terrence Crawford may be a superfight for 2018 or 2019

Please feel free to comment.  I also want to open the discussion for sports betting in boxing

love Boxing!!! Met Mr. Mike Tyson in 1986  Albany N.Y. on clinton avenue hanging out at a corner store. Great guy hand  hand like a ROCK.

I would put my $$ on Mayweather :)

No way, that is really cool...didn't think there would be anyone here...   Yeah I know that Mayweather is the smart bet...but I bet like $250 on Maidana to win over $2k.   Just a fun bet...not too much money.  Maidana destroyed Broner and comes at you with weird angles and throws over the top which could cause Floyd problems.

Who is your favorite fighter of all time?   Felix Trinidad was mine...

the thing that AMAZED me about Meeting Tyson was the fact that here this Millionaire standing in front of me wearing a suit(probably a $10,000) had a small tear in the shoulder and he didn't seem to mind it all.. I guess when you were raised being poor like He and I  things like that wouldn't bother us :)

such a great guy! He always drove around Albany in his Beige rolls Royce giving away $100 to all the poor kids!

Tyson is one of my all time favs too, it's a drag that he got screwed out of most of his money by that swindler Don King.  Since he is a promoter now, I think he should join up with 50 Cent.   I think the two of them could do some big things in boxing, but each of them are kind of struggling on their own as promoters I think.

Obviously the two big ones Top Rank and Golden Boy control the scene, and because the two of them won't work together, we will probably never get to see Floyd and Manny fight.

It's not fair to ask that question since im Biased towards Mr. Tyson now  :D  But soo many great fighters in all weight divisions. sugar Ray Leonard,Tomas Hearns,Wladimir Klitschko (While a dirty fighter) still great.  And who can forget George Foreman  the Big Man :)

you think Sugar Ray in his prime beats Mayweather in his prime?   Mayweather's defensive style and shoulder roll make everyone look terrible.   I would love to see GGG go down in weight to fight Floyd.

PLZZZ sugar Ray would woop Mayweathers ass!

I think that is a possibility, but then again how much would Sugar Ray even connect with Mayweather?

they didn't call him "Sugar" ray for nothing !   That man would have Knocked the Bejeezus out of him  :D

So you think he was the best ever in the weight class then?   You think he makes easy work out of Manny then?

Mayweather is not the best fighter in the world today unless he fight Manny Pacquiao. By then, the world proven who is the BEST. But for me Manny is the BEST pound for pound.

That fight would still be good today, but it would have been GREAT a few years ago.   That fight is impossible to make happen because of Bob Arum at Top Rank (Manny's promoter).   Mayweather used to be promoted by Arum, and since going off on his own, he said he would never work with Arum again.   Also Mayweather works closely with Golden Boy, and they won't work with Arum either.   So basically Manny would need to leave Top Rank for that fight to even have any chance in the world of happening.

Pretty good list...I think for current times, you almost have to include Andre Ward, and probably Sergio Martinez, and Timothy Bradley.  I guess by default, you have to include Juan Manuel Marquez because he knocked Manny into oblivion...  Gennady Golovkin is definitely working his way up the ladder too

Mayweather vs Maidana is a boring fight like other mayweather fight. Jab, jab, run, run, run ,run rides bicycle, run, rides bicycle again. Maidana will not win unless he knock out mayweather. Mayweather owns the judges and referees.

The Marquez vs Pacquiao IV - I was totally surprise marquez was so strong that fight. Even with his age. It cannot be his urine. That was their fourth fight and the young marquez cannot even knock out pacquiao until that fight. He became like hulk. Then I found out Angel Heredia in his corner and I know the reason why.

I'll agree that JMM looked way stronger after hiring Angel, but then you also have to admit how suspect it was that Manny was also running through all the weight classes. With boxing, styles make fights, and JMM is just a bad matchup for Manny. I dont think Manny won the previous fight, and it could easily be argued that he lost the other 2 as well

I really hope that the Gennady "GGG" Golovkin vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fight gets made.   Word has it that Bob Arum over at Top Rank is making it a condition of the fight to sign a contract extension.  This fight could fall apart completely if JCC Jr. signs with advisor Al Haymon

He is super funny too.  I saw the coolest autographed frame of him.   It was a screenshot of Mike Tyson's Punch Out (from Nintendo), and it was autographed.   At the bottom (also inside the frame), was the actual Nintendo cartridge of the game... I wanted to buy it..

Wladimir is one of the best heavyweights the world has seen in a long time.   His reach would have even give someone like Tyson a hard time.  Odd couple with him being with Hayden Panaterre (spelling?).

It's a bummer that there are no really good heavyweights from the United States.  Once Tyson and Holyfield were gone, the heavyweight division lost a lot of it's steam.  Lennox Lewis was ok (I know he wasn't from US), but no one from the US even close to challenges either of the Klitschko brothers.

There is one prospect Deontay Wilder.   Keep an eye out for him.   I think he has a little over 20 fights and have won all of them by knockout.   He has yet to go past even the 4th round so far.   He hasn't been tested by any elite fighter yet, and is definitely not even in the same galaxy as Wladimir, but he is headed in the right direction.

you think there is any chance for a martinez vs mayweather fight if both of them win their upcoming bouts?

Lennox Lewis would have given klitschko a hard time with his height and reach:

Lennox
Height   6 ft 5 in (196 cm)            klitschko
Reach   84 in (213 cm)                Height   1.98 m (6 ft 6 in)
                                                    Reach   206 cm (81 in)

Remember when Lennox fought Wladimir's brother Vitali?   That was like the last heavyweight megafight..   Vitali was definitely winning that fight, but it had to be stopped because of a cut over Vitali's eye.   I think Wladmir would have beaten Lewis.   I don't think that fight would have gone the distance though because both  of them had questionable chins at the time...remember?

i'm almost positive Wladimir would have had a hard time with Lewis but would have won in the end.

I think the before jail version of Tyson would have knocked out Lennox Lewis as well.

Yeah, that was a really good fight.  Two of the Judges had it waaaay off.  No way in hell Mayweather won 117-111.  I thought Maidana won by just a little, but it could have been a draw (as one judge had it).

I exactly agree with your score.  Maidana was way more active.  Yes Floyd landed the much sharper and cleaner shots, but not enough of them to win.  Definitely not enough to win by such a wide margin as 2 of the judges had it.

I agree with this list right here...  It is tough to pull Mayweather out of the number 1 slot though, because on paper he got the win (even though I thought he lost).   Ward is so, so good, but his inactivity is gonna lose him some slots if he doesn't start fighting more soon.  I would love to see GGG fight Ward.  GGG will dominate Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. if that fight is made.   JCC is too slow for GGG.

If you guys could make any fights happen nowadays, who would you match up?

I would still like to see Manny and Floyd obviously, even though it'll never happen.

Would also like to see Ward vs. Golovkin.

I was looking forward to Adonis Stevenson vs. Sergey Kovalev, but Al Haymon messed that one up.

Wladimir Klitschko at no.7? He is the definitely the best fighter out there. Just because he is from the ex-USSR (Ukraine to be precise), the Western (American / European) media ignores him.

He's the best heavyweight hands down, but I don't think he's nearly the best fighter. There is almost 0 competition for him. The deepest divisions right now are 140, 147, and 154.

I think Timothy Bradley and Mayweather would be a good fight because Floyd rarely fights someone with fast hands.  The only person right now that I think could pose a huge threat to dethroning him is Erislandy Lara, and Floyd would never fight him. He doesn't have a big enough draw, and he is way too dangerous for Floyd. Too much downside with not much upside for him in that fight.

Would you guys prefer to see a Mayweather Jr. vs. Maidana rematch, or would you prefer to see him fight Amir Khan?

Amir Khan definitely has a questionable chin, but Mayweather hasn't knocked a guy out in a very long time.   He knocked out Victor Ortiz, but Ortiz wasn't paying attention and was talking to the referee at the time.

Mayweather Jr. hasn't fought someone with quick hands like Khan since he fought Shane Mosley (who was past his prime).   Mosely, I think was the last person to actually have Mayweather really in trouble.   If you remember, in the 2nd round (I believe), Mayweather almost went down and was really shaky for a while.

He's the best heavyweight hands down, but I don't think he's nearly the best fighter. There is almost 0 competition for him. The deepest divisions right now are 140, 147, and 154.

I would place him at least in #3 or #4, and definitely not at #7. And talking about the competition, it is not his fault that there is no quality opponent available to take him.  ;D

He's good, but in terms of hand speed, and movement, he doen't really move.   He just walks straight forward and cuts off the ring.   He also doesn't fight on the inside, he just clinches and grabs.

Do you guys think that Maidana deserves a rematch against Mayweather?   I had the fight as basically a draw, and I think an argument can be made for either guy getting the win.   I think a rematch would be boring, because Mayweather would just run this whole time, and pop shot Maidana from the outside...

Big fight coming on in a few minutes... Carl Froch vs. George Groves (the rematch).  I think it is sold out in Wembly Stadium in the UK. I have been excited for this rematch since the first fight because the ref robbed Groves the last time with the early stoppage...

The WBA has approved a July fight between Golovkin and Geale.   This is great news as it will be Golovkin's biggest fight to date.   It isn't of the same magnitude of a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight, but it is the next best thing, and about as good as we are going to get for July...

I cannot believe that Cotto dominated Sergio Martinez like that.   Sergio needs to retire...  I thought for sure that he was going to destroy Cotto.

This sets Cotto up for potentially a Mayweather rematch (which is unlikely), a PacMan rematch (which is possible given that they both are able to work with Top Rank), a Canelo Alvarez fight, or a GGG fight.

Any of the above would be great fights.

Cotto looked better than ever before, as this was a career defining fight.   He stamped his ticket into the boxing hall of fame with this last victory.

Wow, Provodnikov got shocked by Algieri via a split decision.   This was supposed to be a walk in the park for Provodnikov.  Algieri was pretty impressive picking himself off the mat twice in the first round to outwork him for the rest of the fight.   I thought Provodnikov definitely won the fight.

So much for a PacMan showdown for him.

Still want to see him fight Mayweather, although it is never going to happen.   I think the Manny of a few years ago had a better than 60% chance of winning.   I think his chances of winning now, are somewhere in the 15-20% chance.

Maidana isn't class C, look at his fight resume. He also ran through Broner who everyone was saying was the heir to Mayweather's throne. Mayweather's head was also not in the game as he had just found out his ex had his twins aborted.

Did any of you catch the Terrence Crawford vs. Gamboa fight?   It was definitely a fight of the year candidate.   I was hoping that Gamboa would win, so that 50 cent could get more of a name in the fight promoting game.   I don't like how it is all currently run basically by Al Haymon, Top Rank, and Golden Boy.

Crawford is better than any other lightweight in the game right now.   I think he would have trouble stepping up to 140 though.   He would be a good fight against Danny Garcia, but I think Garcia is too big for Crawford.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara, this weekend on PPV.   This should be a really good fight.  Lara is one of the most avoided 154 pounders.   If Alvarez gets through him (and that is a big IF), then it clears the way for a Alvarez vs. Cotto fight, or a longshot for an Alvarez vs. GGG. superfight.

Lara has stated that if he wins, that he wants a shot at Mayweather.   I think Lara is the one person in the world (in Mayweather's weight class) that could realistically give him a lot of trouble.   I don't think Mayweather would take this fight.

I don't know how many of you watch the Canelo vs. Lara fight, but Lara got robbed (and this is coming from a Canelo fan).   He basically took Canelo to school (just like Mayweather did).   Lara just didn't put out enough offense.   The only reason I was hoping that Lara would win is so that he could possibly get a Mayweather fight.   IMO, he is the one person in the weight class that could really give Mayweather a run for his money.   Now that he lost the fight (on paper), there is no way he is getting Mayweather.

He won't get any big fight actually because his style makes everyone look bad

I think he is too much for Cotto, so I doubt Cotto would fight him.   He basically destroys all middleweights right now.   GGG vs. Peter Quillen would be a joke.

Also excited for Sergey Kovalev vs Bernard Hopkins...that should be a really interesting fight.   It is unbelievable that Hopkins is facing top level guys approaching 50 yrs old!

Their list is pretty decent, but I think GGG HAS to be on their after how he disposed of Daniel Geale, who ring.tv had as their #2 ranked middleweight in the world...

Also, I don't think Carl Froch should be in the top 10...  Also Cotto HAS to be in there after he beat the #3 pound for pound in Sergio Martinez (who was the lineal middleweight king).   Sergio earned his spot on the list the hard way beating his way to the top...

Danny Garcia obliterated Rod Salka last night in the 2nd round.   It was a joke that fight was even made.  Salka was not even ranked, which means that fight was against the sanctioning rules.

Basically they are trying to set up a fight with Garcia and Lamont Peterson.   Lucas Mattyse should get his re-match shot before Lamont Peterson does.

I am actually super excited that Bernard Hopkins is going to fight Sergey Kovalev.   That will be an interesting fight.   Cannot believe Hopkins is almost 50.   He really is an alien.

Just bought my tickets for the GGG vs. Marco Antonio Rubio fight on 10/18 in California.   Super stoked...it is GGG's first fight on the West Coast.

If he beats Rubio (which I think he will), he will be the mandatory challenger for Cotto.   Don't think Cotto wants any part of GGG...I think he would rather vacate the title or avoid him like the plague

If you live in the Southern California area and are a boxing fan, I would recommend getting tickets to the Gennady Golovkin vs Marco Antonio Rubio fight on 10/18 at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California.

This marks the first time that GGG is coming to the west coast.   Also... Nonito Donaire just got added to the undercard for a fight as well.

For some reason, all the fights at the Stub Hub Center are always action packed.   I don't know if it is because of the outdoor atmosphere, but I have been there several times, and the fights are always good!

just as I expected, Mayweather clinched and ran for most of the fight to win a clear Unanimous decision.   I don't think he will fight anyone that has a legitimate chance of beating him.

The Pac-Man fight is still far fetched because Top Rank and Al Haymon will not work together, not to mention that Pac is signed to HBO whereas Mayweather is signed to Showtime.

If either network truly cared about the fans, they would co-promote this event because they know how important this fight would be for boxing history.

I won $1200 on an undercard fight though when De La Rosa beat Alfred Angulo :).  Gonna buy 2.5 more BTC with it :)

Give me one pound for pound great who run in the ring like Mayweather? Give me a legendary who covers his too much like Mayweather? Give me an all time great who clinched so much like Mayweather.

Let me sum it up:

Mayweather Stats:

Total clinch in Maidana fight - 50
Total meters covered in Maidana fight - 500m

The man doesnt know how to fight! He covers, he always run, he clinches a lot! Bayless said "STOP" more than the punches of Mayweather. I couldnt believe he won that fight.

Canelo Alvarez bounced from Showtime, and signed a multi fight deal with HBO.   He and Oscar are now saying that they are going to fight Mayweather to take back the May date from him.   Mayweather has always fought on the two big Mexican National Holiday weekends, and Canelo wants to reclaim those dates.

Mayweather is still a much bigger draw than Canelo, but if Canelo were to sign to fight Cotto, the only way Mayweather could match his numbers would be to fight Pac Man.   This is going to get interesting...

GGG's promoter is hoping that if he wins on Saturday, he will be in line to fight the winner of a potential Canelo vs. Cotto.   I think Canelo might have the guts to get in the ring with GGG, but I don't think Cotto would fight him...

I think Floyd knew that Pac would probably beat him 5 years ago. Now hes the clear favorite. He is the master at knowing when to fight people when they are past their prime, but still have a huge name.

GGG fight was really good yesterday. He is going to carry the sport when mayweather and pac are gone

I'm very happy this fight happen at last. My money is on Pacquiao. Mayweather has soft punches and fragile hands.

Anybody have any thoughts on betting Ward vs. Kovalev 2 on Saturday night?

IMO, Kovalev clearly won the first fight with the knockdown and potentially sweeping the first 6 rounds of the fight, as well as clearly winning round 10.

Both are on a mission.   My gut is saying that Ward is going to make the necessary adjustments and win a decision, but I would love to see a Kovalev knockout.

It bothers me that Ward is going around acting like he clearly won the fight, when I believe he knows deep down that he didn't win the first one.
