Title: Russia Plans Bitcoin Ban by 2015
Post by: cryptocoinsnews on September 14, 2014, 10:20:21 AM
According to leading Russian news organization Russia Today (RT), Russia will pass a Bitcoin ban within the next year, and it could happen as soon as the current parliament session.

Deputy Finance Minister Aleksey Moiseev told journalists in Moscow:  “We will discuss this law in the current session of parliament, and possibly even pass it then, or at the very latest by spring next year. We are currently dealing with comments from the law enforcement agencies, about the specifics of legal measures, and we will take their remarks into account. But the overall concept of the law is set in stone.”

How will this affect Bitcoin?

How will this effect Bitcoin? will probably be even more popular in Russia than it already is (I never hear anything out of Russia regarding Cryptos)

Possibly drive all their developers to market elsewhere (their loss)

How will this effect me? I'll get a good chuckle out of it when they reverse it.

This is typical ban story for Bitcoin. China ban bitcoin, no they don't. Russia ban bitcoin, no they don't. China will ban bitcoin, better sell now, no they won't. Just achieve this. If they want to ban bitcoin, let them do it.
It was just FUD so others could buy in cheaper and then sell more expensive. It wouldn't be reason to panic anyway.

We don't need Russia, China, or Ecuadar. Bitcoin will survive and thrive, even if Antarctica is the only place left!

Russia is very hostile towards bitcoin. They like to keep a very tight control over their economy and people. It is just the culture of government. I would not consider this to be FUD.

I have not been paying such close attention to Russia, but I thought that they already basically banned BTC months ago?   ???

It will likely have a positive affect for Bitcoin but likely not right away if at all.  Bitcoin is here and from what I can tell it's not going to go anywhere and people will be made aware of it and be more interested why it is being banned.  Bitcoin has proven to be reliable so people will have no reason not to use it especially if the have a use for It.

I think a more likely scenario is that Russia is unable to enforce this ban and people will use it anyway. There will likely be a lot of "black market" trade in Russia done in bitcoin

Keep hearing this yet still nothing, so I will wait until it finally happens. I don't see it being a problem for bitcoin though as I am sure they will find a way around it if they really do want to use it there despite a ban.

Unless you are a purchaser of Oil, or a derivative of oil this will not effect bitcoins. Russia does not really sell anything people with bitcoins want. Thus no problem for us. they are just extremely jealous Bitcoins is worth a WHOOOOLEEEE lot more than their own money. They also have no way to control it.  As far as Russian people go they will still be mining and selling bitcoins you can bet on that.

Does it even really matter? How many people could be using bitcoin in Russia circa?

For some reason this sounds like old news, even though this particular article is new.

It seems like Russia is always banning Bitcoin.  I honestly thought it was banned already by them a couple times already.

Not sure how they can completely ban it or enforce this.  Do they have a country wide firewall like China does?

Russia is involved in bitcoins pretty greatly.
Just look at alexa stats for bitcointalk
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitcointalk.org

No idea why China isn't in the top 5 but you may be sure that russians are the forth largest nation that uses bitcoins
And if they'll start dumping bitcoins it will considerably hurt the price

I don't believe this until I see at least six confirmations... ;D

Even if true, it won't have much impact, because it can't be enforced. People in Russia are well trained in circumventing stupid laws.

If Russian government is smart, they would promote Bitcoin as trade currency to crush the US dollar dominance once and for all.

It is true. Russia will ban bitcoin, there's no doubt about it.

Russian government is smart when it comes to stealing money and preserving their power. They don't really care about anything else.

Although bitcoin cannot be blocked, Russians may not want to invest in it due to the fact that it's banned. The fear of future prosecution may convince Russians to cash out.

I agree. Maybe the only one who continue to use it will be the organized crimes, terrorists & other people who have no choice other than breaking the law to move, transfer or clean their money. Ordinary folks may cash out to avoid nuisances & fines.

Just like drugs.
They could make laws to throw you in jail when you own bitcoins
You see they already do the same with torrents, when you share files which are copyright protected.

Bitcoin is natively not that anonymous.
Also, when the majority of the people think bitcoin is bad because it made the current economic system collapse, it will not succeed.

I don't care, I'm a permabull for life.
I'll die with bitcoins in possession, no matter what.

Countries like Russia only really enjoy things if they're illegal. I'm now convinced that everyone in Russia is gay since they declared a ban on LGBT rallies.

It is a ploy to reduce price so they can buy them all up with their worthless fiat. But smart money seems to be getting in ahead of them so they will end up buying above $500usd anyways. Seems governments are starting to see there is a race to get into bitcoin JUST IN CASE it does do what every smart person in the world that is not in government says it will end up doing.

The only part that I would be sad about would be the potential shutdown of btc-e.  That seems to be the easiest exchange to work with, and it would be a bummer to see it shut down because of a law like this getting implemented.

In my opinion, the reason why Russia discusses a bitcoin ban is btc give a possibility to transfer assets overseas conveniently and secretly for people who concern about the currency devaluation.
