1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Metadisk - Blockchain Based Cloud Storage - Powered by Storj on: May 17, 2014, 04:22:26 PM
I'm the author of codinginmysleep.com and I am not only a sysadmin, programmer and Bitcoin super-nerd who would love to be a part of the beta, but I'll probably end up writing up my experience, assuming the rules of the beta allow. I also occasionally write for Bitcoin Magazine and I sometimes podcast with Let's Talk Bitcoin - I'm sure they'd be happy to cross-publish/promote.
Oh hey! Love codinginmysleep. I read it when I get the chance. I put you in the beta, and marked you as press. We have some internal writeups that might make that easier for you.

Awesome! I always look forward to tinkering with new things, especially when they're crypto or Bitcoin related. Glad to hear you like the site, I've been a bit too swamped to write lately but things are starting to calm down and I'm quite excited to start experimenting and writing again.

Oh, and coincidentally I'm also the original author of bitrpc.py, the file you uploaded in your screenshot. That's gotta count for something, right?
3  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Codinginmysleep= BFL SHILL 2 the MAX - on: May 15, 2014, 02:43:07 AM
he looks like he would sell his soul for a cheesecake

Ooh, a fat joke. Very original and impactful. I'm crying over that one, I totally promise. No one has ever told me I'm fat before.  Roll Eyes

Ars Technica's route is not the only option.  You could also have donated the mining income to a charity.  That's what Wired did, but I'm sure you probably know that.

A fair point, though in my defense their post was about 2 weeks after mine, by which point the name-calling had already begun and the damage was done. Wish I'd had the charity idea first, but that's not the way it played out. I've donated more than enough after the fact to offset the earnings from one Jalapeno, even one obtained so early, not that it will matter to anyone here.

Oh, and if I ever actually try to become a shill, I think I'd be a really bad one. Maybe if I'd heaped praise onto BFL instead of just putting out a demo and a teardown I'd have gotten an early Single or Monarch too. Too bad I just shot a couple videos and posted an objective presentation of what I was shown.

Of course this is an argument I'll never truly win since most of my haters aren't actually upset about the Jalapeno anyway, they're upset about the reason I knew the BFL people in the first place: The Sonny Vleisides Interview. Comically, that entire interview only existed because of the complete lack of fair and balanced reporting that existed in the Bitcoin space at the time.

The TL;DR version is that, like many in this space, Sonny Vleisides has a past and some people got their hands on that information and publicized the living daylights out of it, thoroughly demonizing the guy. I decided to see if I could speak to him myself, let him tell his story and present it to the public - everyone deserves at least that much, guilty or not, right?

Apparently not, because that was back in 2012 and I'm still catching shit for it today. You all say you want fair, balanced and ethical journalism but you don't. What you want is people pretending they have a crystal ball alternating between empty assurances and vitriolic fervor. I try not to interpret too much - People tell me things, then I write them down in a public place and let you all make up your own minds. My only crime was assuming that everyone was capable of absorbing that information and making rational decisions based upon it. My bad.
4  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Codinginmysleep= BFL SHILL 2 the MAX - on: February 11, 2014, 01:32:20 AM
Hi, Dave Perry of Coding In My Sleep here. I realize this is serious necromancy (120+ day old post) but I just found the thread and felt the need to reply. I doubt most of the people who posted in this thread will be at all convinced by any statement I could give, but what have I got to lose, you already hate me, right?

Since this is so old I'm not sure when you refer to my promotion of the Monarch whether you're referring to the article I wrote or the fact that my sidebar ad was updated to reflect that product, so I'll address both.

As for the article, I've made it widely known that I'm big into mining and I'll release whatever news or review whatever product any company wants to send me. If these elements of my site disproportionately favor BFL it is merely because they have been more willing than most to give up information, products and face-time with their higher-ups. I had talks with the guys at Avalon that nothing ever came of, I did a couple of videos with a USB stick ASICMiner sent me, I'll take apart anything anyone wants to put in my hands. It's also important to recognize that BFL is the MtGox of the ASIC world - for better or worse they're a huge name that's been here for ages (comparatively speaking) and what they do is news.

Now for the ad. Frequent visitors to my site might notice that I've removed the "Sponsors" page entirely and only one ad remains in the left sidebar. This ad is the last ad that will ever appear on my site as I have moved (rather successfully) to a tip/donation system - for exactly this reason. I felt that I could not maintain any kind of objectivity with those ads on my site and I'd been bitten once or twice by inadequate vetting, which is not the sort of thing I have any desire in spending a lot of time on. The entire idea of putting manually-managed ads on the site was just a terrible idea that I'll not repeat. BFL's ad is the last remaining ad on my site simply because they bought a great deal of ad time in advance and it has yet to expire. The ad itself is hosted on their server so they can update it at any time and at some point around the time this post originated they did change the ad to one for the Monarch, hence why I'm not sure which thing we're even talking about. In any case, their time is up come June and then the entire sidebar will disappear.

As for my decision to keep (and mine with) the Jalapeno they provided me, all I can say is that it's an impossible situation to be put in. There's a lot of motivations to keep it, even aside from the financial aspect (want to see the first production Jalapeno ever made anyone?) and the ethics of that decision did in fact daunt me at the time. In all honesty what sealed my decision to keep the unit is that a few days later Ars Technica came out with their review and everyone kept saying what idiots they were for destroying their private key in the name of integrity. If I'm to be called a shill for keeping it or an idiot for returning it, then "shill" hurts a bit less... and pays better... and supports the network... and gets me a historical Bitcoin artifact that will sit proudly on a prominently-displayed shelf LONG after it's obsolete. How can you turn that down?

Many thanks to those who attempted my defense or preached reason. I'm honestly flattered that you care enough about what I write to have felt disappointed or angry when it didn't live up to expectations. For that small bit, I will apologize - I do the best I can with what I'm given to work with and always strive to do better. Hopefully you've stuck around and hopefully I've won you over again in the time that's passed. If not, I'll gladly listen to any reasonable criticism you'd like to offer. And a slice of that cheesecake bitcoinarnold was talking about. I'm not gonna lie, you've seen my picture. I do enjoy a good cheesecake.
5  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are wall street movies the best warning signal to sell on: January 21, 2014, 08:34:29 PM
The problem with your chart is that most of those movies came after crashes. They are Hollywood reactions to market crashes.

Hollywood must be pretty prescient then, since it generally takes years for a movie to go from conception and screenwriting to release.

If I were a Hollywood producer, I'd try to have one of these films completed and ready for release at all times just to take advantage of the hype when something happens on Wall Street. That might have the side effect of making me look prescient, but it's just good marketing.
6  Economy / Scam Accusations / Beware private messages containing URLs, they may be phishing scams on: November 19, 2013, 03:03:45 AM
I just received the following private message from user MikaelAngelo:

Quote
Be careful where you mine and exchange bitcoins for money. Most mining pools are a scam, bitcoin exchanges too(they will hold your money for months), look in the scammers section and see for yourself bitconitalk.org/index.php?board=83.0

The link text appears to go to bitconitalk.org/index.php?board=83.0 but in fact directs to this page (do not click without reading first):

http://bticointakl.my-board.org/1/Login.htm

This page is skinned to look like the bitcointalk.org login screen and is an obvious attempt to scrape passwords.

ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE URL BAR BEFORE LOGGING IN TO ANY WEB SITE.
7  Economy / Services / Re: Need a good quality VPS provider on: November 07, 2013, 06:47:19 PM
I'm looking into digital ocean now and I like what I'm seeing so far. I wish they offered a custom VPS so I could get the same cores I have on my current system without having to pay for an obscene amount of RAM but I think I can find a package that will work, especially considering that their use of SSDs should lower the number of threads sitting in i/o wait dramatically. I need some more testing to confirm but I think I may have found my new host - thanks nahtnam!
8  Economy / Services / Re: Need a good quality VPS provider on: November 06, 2013, 08:05:48 PM
It's not a super fancy system, 4 cores, a gig of ram, 50gb hard disk and way more bandwidth than I really ever use (I use about 10 to 20 gigs a month, my provider gives me 2tb). It's not hard at all to find a system with those kind of specs, but I need reliability.

I mean, just look at the crappy uptime I've had the last month or so with VPS6: http://stats.pingdom.com/t6b5ecwa5m6p/639913

That's what's unacceptable. I can't have 97% uptime, that's just not reasonable.
9  Economy / Services / Need a good quality VPS provider on: November 06, 2013, 04:14:02 AM
I've been hosting codinginmysleep.com with VPS6.net for a while now and they've traditionally been quite good, but recently their uptime has not left me feeling particularly good about continuing to use their service. I need a new VPS provider and preferably one that accepts Bitcoin. Price is an issue, but this time around I refuse to let it be the main issue - I'm looking for quality here, as close to 100% uptime as I can get and customer service that's actually functional. Recommendations?

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Casascius' Physical Bitcoins Cracked at Defcon on: August 04, 2013, 06:06:55 PM
I just happened to be at Defcon yesterday when Stits and Datagram managed to peel the holo foil off of a Casascius coin and replace it with basically no real damage. They think with a little refinement of technique they could pull it off with no visible damage at all. Caldwell is in talks with them trying to improve security, but for now you should all be weary of second-hand Casascius coins.

12  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Defcon XXI - Onsite meetup on: August 01, 2013, 01:43:08 PM
I'm a little afraid of connecting my laptop to the wi-fi, haha.

This is the only downside to bringing Bitcoin to a hacker con - 3G/4G will be choked and you have to be DAMN sure of your wallet security to brave defcon wifi.

That said, I'm carefully selecting a Bitcoin shirt and heading to the Rio now. We need to get an actual meetup planned.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I made a WordPress plugin to receive bitcoin tips from your blog readers on: June 20, 2013, 04:18:25 PM
Callbacks were created by the v0.1 with just empty function handling them which was doing nothing after the callback - with the intent to implement it in v0.2 and be fully compatible. I am however reviewing the v0.1 code and it seems that the callback URL was missing one of the parameters that are now required and callbacks created by the v0.1 might not be compatible with v0.2, sorry for that. The only effect might be that donations won't be detected and displayed correctly, but they still go to your destination address. I'll release next version around the weekend and will probably include feature to re-create all existing per-post addresses (e.g. to change destination address to forward coins to) so there's no need to manually deleting the current addresses (you can do that and new addresses will be created immediately, but then tips to old addresses will never be included in the stats; re-creating addresses using the feature will preserve previous addresses as well so their tips will be included in the stats).

I don't mean to keep adding feature requests, but I keep having ideas... How difficult would it be to include a "recalc all" button somewhere that would trigger a site-wide recalculation of statistics in case something goes wrong with the automatic calculations?
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I made a WordPress plugin to receive bitcoin tips from your blog readers on: June 19, 2013, 09:35:11 PM
How does it deal with sites that have thousands of posts when the blockchain.info wallet has a 400 addresses limit?

It doesn't actually use the blockchain.info wallet. It uses blockchain.info forwarding addresses, which receive funds and programmatically forward them to another address. You can create as many forwarding addresses as you want. All the funds end up in one single destination address. The per-post addresses aren't used to actually store funds, merely to track where the funds came from.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I made a WordPress plugin to receive bitcoin tips from your blog readers on: June 19, 2013, 04:28:44 PM
No, it only counts tips received since installing the v0.2.0. I will probably add periodically syncing whole history in some future version - just in case something goes wrong with blockchain.info notifications - and then it would catch up with the previous tips.

Since the current donation addresses were created by the 0.1 version and I'm assuming you're using callbacks to trigger the recalc would it be correct to assume that these old addresses which weren't set up with a callback URL will never sync up? Do I need to wipe all of the existing addresses and settings and reinstall the plugin? If so, I know you haven't implemented a one-click solution for that yet, but what do I need to manually delete from where to make that all happen?
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I made a WordPress plugin to receive bitcoin tips from your blog readers on: June 19, 2013, 02:12:20 AM
Awesome work!

For those of us who have been using the 0.1 version of this and have received tips prior to upgrading, is there an easy way to initialize the number/amount/average values to current numbers? Will they initialize correctly the next time I get a tip or will this only count tips it sees from here out?

Any updates or should I set aside some time to start coding?
18  Bitcoin / Mining / ASICMiner Erupter unboxing/review video on: June 08, 2013, 03:20:38 AM
The guys over at ASICMiner were kind enough to send me a couple of their fancy new USB miners to play with - here's the result.

YouTube video:

Accompanying blog post (with pictures):

I'm waiting on a couple pieces of new equipment to arrive next week, then I'll be shooting a teardown video, which basically just means I'm going to take off the heat spreader given that the other side of the PCB is already exposed...
19  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for WordPress plugin (or someone to write one) on: June 02, 2013, 08:36:55 PM
I didn't put it on GitHub as I read that Wordpress hosts all plugins from their directory in their svn and I think it's required if you want the plugin to be easily upgrade'able within Wordpress - so not sure if I want to manage the code in two repositories at the same time.

I plan to sit on this on Monday evening, finish some features and publish to the plugins directory.

Cool, glad to hear you're still around! I wasn't aware of the WordPress SVN thing, that's good to know (even though I despise SVN). Mostly I'm just glad to know you're still around, I was beginning to think you'd bailed and I was going to have to learn WordPress programming myself Tongue
20  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for WordPress plugin (or someone to write one) on: June 01, 2013, 11:49:59 PM
If I don't hear anything soon I'll put this up on GitHub and start working on it myself - not that I have the time, but I feel like it's an important project so I'll make the time.
