1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Is cryptocurrency helping spread child sexual abuse? on: November 02, 2018, 08:39:55 AM
Pedophiles and criminals engaged in child cybersex are proliferating in the Philippines as the cybersex industry becomes more sophisticated and profitable despite numerous crackdowns both by local and foreign authorities, according to a report by Channel News Asia.

Citing a study by the Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography and the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children titled Cryptocurrency and the BlockChain, it said that encrypted payment systems involving cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin are driving the proliferation of live-streaming child sexual abuse. On average, live abuse or when a user instructs the children to perform sexual acts, cost around 10 Bitcoins when it was still worth $10,000, but a live-stream view-only would cost one Bitcoin.

What are people's thoughts on this? Do you believe it is helping the industry or is it just incidental?

3  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-10-29] French Business School Accepts Fees in Bitcoin for Blockchain Techn on: October 30, 2018, 10:30:51 AM
We need to see more of this kinds of schools where they are also aware of the latest trends and topics in which they will apply it into their own curriculum, this only shows that this schools wants the best for their students' future.
I think it's more of a smart marketing move than something done to actually benefit the students. I'm not saying something is wrong with that, but we have to acknowledge that there are certain financial incentives.

Most of the interested students have crypto already, but lack fiat. It only makes sense to have Bitcoin be a payment option because it significantly lowers the bar, plus it allows people to legally avoid taxation by not cashing out to fiat.

Overall, these cases add to Bitcoin's legitimacy, and I can only be happy with that. From fraud and scheme to something that may change the world, I'll take that at any time of the day.  Grin

I was thinking just this - it definitely helps with marketing and getting their name out there. I had never even heard of this business school until this article and I am sure there are many others who are similar
4  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-10-29] Bitcoin trading uses so much power that it could push global temper on: October 30, 2018, 10:26:30 AM
The cryptocurrency bitcoin has been touted by its proponents as a way to help solve our most pressing problems, from homelessness and human trafficking to cancer and the global financial crisis. Bitcoin's ability to reduce fraud and security risk has made it one of the most transparent digital currencies on the market. Many see this as a critical next step to holding governments accountable for carbon emissions, and even developing a market for reducing the world's carbon footprint.

But the currency also has a dark side. A new study from the University of Hawaii finds that if bitcoin becomes more widely adopted, the huge amounts of electricity used to trade the cryptocurrency could push global temperatures above 2 degrees Celsius by 2033. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a 2-degree rise in global temperatures could reduce water availability in some areas by up to 30%, make arctic species like the polar bear and caribou vulnerable to extinction, and subject another 10 million people to coastal flooding. While bitcoin isn't responsible for as many emissions as pollution-heavy industries in the US, such as agriculture and transportation, the industry is releasing carbon dioxide at an alarming rate.

6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: You think we're deviating from bitcoin's philosophy? on: October 26, 2018, 08:36:34 AM
Yes, probably in some ways we are but it is also evolving... and with evolution and growth comes change, which can also mean to the philosophy. Now, I am not agreeing with the change and still believe education is the key to a good investor but some disagree I know
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Japan just gave its cryptocurrency industry legal power to police itself on: October 26, 2018, 08:17:36 AM
The cryptocurrency scene is evolving too quickly for policymakers to keep up - well that’s the rationale behind a move by Japan to officially let thee industry create and enforce its own rules. If the approach works, it is likely that other not-do-forward-in-the-crypto-world nations will also test it. Apparently "Japan’s Financial Services Agency has granted the Japan Virtual Currency Exchange Association, a self-regulatory organization made up of representatives from cryptocurrency exchanges, authority to create rules aimed at protecting consumers, preventing money laundering, and standardizing how exchanges should operate. The agency also gets the power to sanction exchanges for breaking those rules, reports Reuters." Opinions on this? Will it be successful or fail miserably, or something in between? Will others follow soon?

I found information regarding this in a Technology Review article : https://www.technologyreview.com/the-download/612347/japan-just-gave-its-cryptocurrency-industry-legal-power-to-police-itself/
8  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to start writing an academic essay? on: October 24, 2018, 07:03:39 AM
I always begin at the end - I literally write my last paragraph or so when I start writing and then work my way back from that. Usually that paragraph will change a little by the time I'm done, but that helps me visualize where my essay has to go before I start with the other bits! I then tend to go back to the start and write the introduction and go in order from there... hope that helps!

10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Social Media to Crypto on: October 24, 2018, 06:40:49 AM
In relation to how social media affects crypto, it is mostly to do with marketing - the audiences that social media can reach is huge, especially the younger generation, and therefore I can imagine any crypto marketing targeting young people would be utilizing it
11  Other / Off-topic / Re: Places to travel! Any recommendation~? on: October 23, 2018, 03:19:39 AM
Depends on how far you want to go and where you are based! And whether you want hot or cold weather.... if yo are seeking warmer climates, Australia is amazing (Melbourne is my personal favorite) and SE Asia has its perks. If colder weather is more your idea of fun, Scotland is amazing, as is Iceland and Switzerland. There are SO MANY WONDERFUL PLACES TO GO - enjoy! If you can't decide... buy a round the world trip and go to them all!
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Practical is Bitcoin As Payment Service? on: October 23, 2018, 03:15:36 AM
It is as practical as the systems allow it to be - it isn't bitcoin itself that poses the issues, its the programs which allow bitcoin to be accepted (and if people know how to use them/how easy they are to use)
13  Other / Off-topic / Re: Online Relationships on: October 22, 2018, 08:18:44 AM
Online dating is like anything - the more expectation you place on it, the higher chance there is that you are going to be disappointed if things don't quite work out like you'd hoped. Also, people are a lot more free in what they say online as opposed to what they will say in person/on the phone, which can be both a good and bad thing

15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Vs Real Estate on: October 22, 2018, 08:13:06 AM
I think it depends on the person, their perceptions and their circumstances. Some people feel a lot more comfortable investing in real estate and, irrelevant of whether it is more or less profitable, will continue to feel more comfortable knowing their investment is bricks and mortar. Others prefer bitcoin and the benefits it offers - that's ok too.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / iVendPay founder Sergey Danilov and bringing crypto ATMs to Asia on: October 22, 2018, 08:07:29 AM
Smart vending machines capable of handling cryptocurrency payments will be installed throughout Malaysia and Israel by the end of 2018 as a result of a partnership between iVendpay and GoByte. Sergey Danilov, the founder of the iVendPay project, told CCN:

“The partnership between iVendpay and Gobyte is caused by the high demand for universal services allowing to pay for goods with cryptocurrency in everyday life. The choice in favor of GoByte was made due to the peculiarities of this cryptocurrency, designed for instant processing of micropayments with a small commission. Payment for purchases using GoByte in any vending machine equipped with iVendPay takes less than 3 seconds.”

He also provided a Youtube clip showing the ATM in action. GoByte is a fork from the Dash cryptocurrency aimed at processing merchant transactions. GoByte claims to be an improvement on the original Dash currency with a separate payment infrastructure that allows lower or non-existent fees for processing payments.
