A System Dynamics Model of Bitcoin: Mining as an Efficient Market and the Possibility of "Peak Hash"

Authors: Davide Lasi, Lukas Saul

Abstract: The mining of bitcoin is modeled using system dynamics, showing that the past evolution of the network hash rate can be explained to a large extent by an efficient market hypothesis applied to the mining of blocks. The possibility of a decrease in the network hash rate from the next halving event (May 2020) is exposed, implying that the network may be close to 'peak hash', if the price of bitcoin… ▽ More

Great, thanks team at Unnamed.exchange!  If you're not trading there,   why not?

In other news, a new mobile wallet app is available for iPhone and Android - "Hefei Logwallet", I believe the first LOG wallet for iPhone available on apple app store.

Would appreciate Dev updating the .qt to the newer version which allows for selecting where the blockchain is stored.  Auto selection of roaming in 'c' drive just fills up the Drive.

From discord forum:

There is a flag when starting up, use> woodcoin-qt -datadir=d:/mydir

WOODCOIN UPDATE FOR BITCOINTALK  Dec. 21, 2019

Happy solstice woodcutters and log stackers!

1)

The network troubles of summer 2019 seemed to work themselves out after a turbulent period in which many transactions were not getting through.  It seems connectivity and some errant miners were the source of the trouble.  Researchers in Maine, Shenzhen, Hefei, and the Philippines worked to track down the source of the error, and while educational in the end it was still not entirely clear who had been mining mostly empty blocks or why.  Connectivity of nodes was a likely culprit as it was found that nodes in China and in Singapore don't always connect in a timely manner.

2)

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that woodcoin wallets are now being added to the "google play appstore" and "apple store".  While it is sad that people resort to such insecure and outdated methods to distribute software, it was deemed appropriate as there are some people who are stuck using these dead end platforms and for whom publication of software through these compromised channels won't influence the date of their exit.  Anyway, not like we can control here what kind of software people release nor how they do it.

3)

ACX.io and CREX24 have been providing excellent exchange services to LOG users and remain recommended.  However FUBT exchange from Hong Kong is involved in some difficulties, of which I was not informed as to their nature.  It is recommended that anyone using the FUBT exchange remove all funds as soon as possible.

4)

Woodcoin is now a 5 years old block chain with an impressive track record of no premine, no hard forks, and relatively stable valuation.  The logarithmic reward curve lies waiting for the eventual realizatoin that geometric curve money supply does not allow enough coinbase rewards for multi generation operation.

5)

WoodcoinChina wechat group, Woodcoin discord group, woodcoin IRC, vermont secure computing facebook remain the primary social media sites for information about woodcoin.  There is no official anything.

that's what they get taught in school and there's a whole lot of whitewashing of their history and demonizing of them as peoples.

You think that is what is being taught in western school? You are terribly mistaken..
In school they teach white guilt and extreme PC culture at the expense of demonizing science..

https://www.rt.com/news/448732-james-watson-titles-revoked/
Quote
Ninety-year-old Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson has been stripped of his honorary titles by a leading American research institution, after doubling down on his controversial conclusions linking race and intelligence.
Despite nearly half a century service to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), Watson, a world-renowned geneticist, lost all of his honorary titles of Chancellor Emeritus, Oliver R. Grace Professor Emeritus and Honorary Trustee, for refusing to retract his own scientific conclusions.

when asked more than a decade later whether his views about race and intelligence have changed, he told the PBS documentary they haven’t.

“Not at all. I would like for them to have changed, that there be new knowledge that says that your nurture is much more important than nature,” the scientist was quoted as saying in a recently previewed PBS documentary, titled American Masters: Decoding Watson. “There’s a difference on the average between blacks and whites on IQ tests. I would say the difference is, it’s genetic.”

Watson rose to international scientific fame in 1953 after helping discover DNA's double helix structure with fellow geneticists Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick. In 1962, the team was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology “for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material.”

If this was based on white supremacy it would never be admitted that East Asians have higher average IQs than whites..

And no white supremicist would ever admit that infact Ashkenazi Jews have the highest average IQ scores of all peoples..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_Jewish_intelligence
Quote
Ashkenazi Jewish intelligence, often referred to as the "Jewish genius",[1][2][3][4] is a subject that explores the perception that Ashkenazi Jews on average have a higher intelligence than all other ethnic groups and excel disproportionately in many fields. Although it is generally accepted that there is a significant statistical difference in intelligence between Ashkenazi Jews and other ethnic groups, there still remains the question as to whether the difference is due to genetic factors or not. Because the relationship between human races and intelligence and the relationship between genetics and Jewish descent are both highly controversial, it has been an occasional subject of scientific controversy.

The average IQ score of Ashkenazi Jews has been calculated to be within the range of 108 to 115 under some studies, which is significantly higher than that of any other ethnic group in the world.

So am I a Jewish supremacists or Asian supremacists?

How is genetic IQ science white supremacist if whites don't even win and are topped by asians and jews?
What that is is PC Slander.. (calling me a white supremacist)

You will find that a lot of low IQs go hand in hand with poverty and a lack of education

Correct..

I'm sure if you took the IQs of white American's living in trailer parks and in poverty you'd find they wouldn't score very well, but we wouldn't blame their race for that.

Correct.
Poorer whites "living in trailer parks" tend to have lower IQs than rich whites living in affluent neighborhoods.

This is not blaming any race for anything
Their are very high and very low IQ examples of people from all races. Their are plenty of very low IQ asians and high IQ blacks, but this is about averages
and the average IQ of a country correlates almost perfectly to the success of that country..

Yea. The Chinese lends money to African countries. Then, when we can't pay back, they take their money back in form of our natural resources.

They are loan-sharking African countries and will control your entire country, not just take your oil..

PS: What is IQ of the Greenlanders? Why are they left out of the scores? Grey is such a dull color.

This one shows Greenland.
It must have been omitted from the other one.

Not all datasets are exactly the same but they all show a very similar pattern..

Unfortunately, almost everyone there does not have enough ability to manage these things.
it's a lot easier said than done when it comes to establishing a country that can hold itself up.
the African as we have today is a continent with confused leaders and blind followers

Denying the science is going to do nothing but keep Africa as poor as possible.
The only way you will ever find a solution to the poverty problem in Africa is if you recognize the true causes in order to develop a solution.

Go ahead and call me a Jewish supremacist if you can't handle the truth..

Africa is being raped.
we get treated like slaves and our wealth is been enjoy by other continents.

Most importantly OP..
Stop blaming it on everyone else!

Obviously it has very little to do with the OP, but one thing we can all agree on: IQ is a score on a test, for which the average score receives the IQ score of 100.  Also without a doubt is that practice increases test scores, and that different tests yield different scores.  How useful such indicators might be for a given discussion is unclear.  Generally speaking, we can be clear that those who wish to put fancy labels on test scores and use them out of context disregarding these basic facts are also likely to score poorly on such tests.

In some cases people from different geographic locations have on average practiced different skills more than others, and sometimes people with different physical features have on average practiced different skills more than others.  Perhaps an interesting statistic, but what are the conclusions?  There are very few conclusions to be drawn here.  Individuals still certainly need to be tested separately from one another for any skill you might wish to test, as it is also beyond dispute that any statistical average from a geographical location or physical attribute can most definitely not be used to determine the score of a given individual on a test.

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: wait, who owns the market? on: October 08, 2019, 10:28:04 PM
Understand who controls the market you are investing or trading in, and you’ll have an advantage. Bitcoin is a free and open source market. Nobody owns it.

But does anyone control it?

Ask yourself this—

How are Bitcoins created?

Who is incentivised to create Bitcoin?

Between 2013 and the beginning of 2017, big money had been slowly moving in on Bitcoin. They saw its potential as a relatively rare asset and also the mechanism that made it work. Bitcoin is seen as having a value greater than the sum of its parts.

Bitcoin is not a market, it is a single asset.  You need another asset to indicate a trade and hence a market.  If your other asset is the USD, then of course the USD issuers can have the largest control of this market, being able to take as many bitcoins as they like at any time, in the time honored method of fiat practitioners since Kublai Khan.  Other than that, every participant in a market has some control, some via influence to market logistics, others via their influence with market makers, others via their control of some of the assets themselves.

Four main causes were suggested as the cause of the problem:

1)  Malicious actors (miners or node relayers operating DDOS)
2)  Geographical isolation issues
3)  Incompatible versions of network node and wallet software
4)  Miners rejecting transactions mistakenly

Funkenstein, you are very mistaken, the only correct answer is answer 3). I wrote you this on Discord.
All unconfirmed transactions are made by the windows wallet of the old version, and the pools work with the new version of the wallet. They are not compatible for transactions, they can only confirm transactions of their versions, otherwise they are compatible. That is - the windows wallet transactions will be confirmed only by the blocks found under the old version of the wallet, and vice versa. Blocks without transactions confirm both wallets.
You have only one way out - this is updating your windows wallet or rolling back pools to the old version. A very big mistake was to leave on git. two versions of the wallet.

Interesting, thank you Mony.  I have found that some transactions made with the android wallet took a long time to be added to the block chain, or even were not added.  Also, most transactions were added.   Similarly for transactions made by the woodcoin code and the woodcore code.  If you can point to something in the transaction that is different made by some version of the software, that would be very helpful.  I have not been able to find such a red flag unfortunately, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Them bois are iced out homie.  Diamonds, paper, and big rims, they care bout no bitcoin dawg.

Guess Jay z  and Dr. Dre are billionaires now.  for real tho this whole thing is just stupid.  The people that own the banking system just type numbers into a computer screen which means they have unlimited money while people are doing anything for paper. its so stupid.

Indeed.

Hey Lil Wayne, I know your a goon, but what is a goon to a goblin?

They can just buy the bitcoin with the fiat, you dumb fuck, in unlimited amounts and we have to re buy the bitcoin off them.
Player getting played by that fiat 2.0 bitcoin instead of earning a supply everyone makes for free at a equal rate.

"they got money for wars but can't feed the poor" Tupac

Who can buy unlimited amounts of BTC?  There's a limit there methinks.

Of course the issuers get to buy up all the BTC they can as long as people will still trade for their fiat, that's why the price is so high.
Just like the houses and the stocks.

Tupac's got it right for sure.

15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Woodcoin [LOG] Pure Skein POW, Logarithmic Release, No Premine nor ICO on: August 26, 2019, 06:00:52 PM
Introduction:

Several people reported to us that LOG transactions were slow to be included or were not showing up on the block chain.

Hypothesis:

Four main causes were suggested as the cause of the problem:

1)  Malicious actors (miners or node relayers operating DDOS)
2)  Geographical isolation issues
3)  Incompatible versions of network node and wallet software
4)  Miners rejecting transactions mistakenly

Methodology:

Several nodes were set up on servers in different areas, given some LOG, and attempted to push transactions on the network.  Nodes were operated in China, Hong Kong, S. Korea, Seychelles, Denmark and the United States.

Nodes built and ran one of several full-node wallet versions, eventually focusing on these two repositories:

funkshelper/woodcoin.git
funkshelper/woodcore.git

No windows or mac binaries were tested, though some linux binaries previously released from above repositories were tested.

Findings:

While we cannot categorically eliminate option 1 (malicious actors) the behavior of the network seemed to not agree with this hypothesis.  There are always some transactions going through, so it’s not a full DDOS attack nor is there any clear pattern of rational malicious behavior.

We can also eliminate hypothesis 3, because we were able to push transactions to the network from all of the nodes tested, at least sometimes.  This was our primary concern in conducting this thorough test program, as incompatibilities between nodes can lead to chain splits, which fortunately have not been seen here.

We are left with a combination of (2) and (4), which means that we have a not-well-connected network with some nodes suffering geographic isolation (most notably in China), as well as problems with miners blocking low-fee transactions or over-filtering the mempool.

Recommendations:

To improve the network connectivity it is recommended that more LOG users run full nodes.  Those who do have full nodes, miners or otherwise, should add the following lines to the woodcoin.conf file, to ensure connectivity in and around mainland China:

addnode=150.109.126.117
addnode=139.186.21.23
addnode=110.10.176.94
addnode=5.9.233.99

Tests showed somewhat better connectivity from the “woodcore” nodes.  It is recommended that network operateos use the code from the

funkshelper/woodcore.git

repository.

Transactions were also dropped which had a low fee.  It is recommended to set the min fee at 0.001 LOG while current conditions continue:

./woodcoin-cli settxfee 0.001

Above all, more miners are needed on the network.  Despite all time high difficulty, the number of miners is quite small and this makes the network both less secure and more geographically isolated.

Further work:

New versions of the woodcoin node and wallet have been issued by a few people but continued work is necessary in debugging, especially from the mining side where even fewer people are reviewing the code which is running the network.  The golang version is still not released, nor are more recent projects forking existing litecoin and bitcoin node projects.  More robust and reliable nodes and wallets will improve the network.

Comments:

The extreme decentralization of the woodcoin network makes it a great challenge to know what software is being operated by the participants and how it behaves.  These challenges provide a valuable test of such decentralization, and while the problems are annoying for users there is no loss of consensus nor of funds reported.  Users are advised that this is an experimental network and transactions might be slow to go through, though there is no danger of funds being lost.

 Recovery:

If a node or wallet becomes confused because published transactions did not appear in the longest block chain, the chain can be rescanned to restore an up-to-date wallet reflecting blanaces on the chain.  This can be done in several ways, the simplest being perhaps to delete all the files in the .woodcoin directory except wallet.dat and woodcoin.conf.  A restart of the node will then rescan the chain to determine the actual balance of the keys in the wallet.dat file
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Woodcoin [LOG] Pure Skein POW, Logarithmic Release, No Premine nor ICO on: August 26, 2019, 05:56:37 PM
Glad to see you back!

What about the current wallet issues where transaction aren't going through?

There are more nodes now to try for better connectivity, especially if the miners are in China and being disconnected and not receiving transactions.  TX are going through, if there is any repeatiable configuration of wallet / node that never works, please let me know and I will duplicate it for test and debug.

Stuck transactions are a problem and googling "stuck transactions" shows that it isn't just woodcoin.  However the maximum decentralization we have here definitely contributes to having connectivity issues.

17  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Africa isn't poor - Africa is being raped. on: August 26, 2019, 05:51:08 PM
I laugh at my continent when foreigners call us poor.

One way to see if a place is "poor" or "rich" is to see how well they have preserved their most valuable things.  If a people are poor, they have to sell the family heirlooms.  The most valuable things on the planet are:  the arable land, the healthy rivers and ecosystems, the biodiversity.  These are without a doubt the gems which are not a fad but are irreplaceable.  Some places on the earth have turned themselves into deserts such as the midwest USA, deforested, killed the river dolphins, etc,  different problems all over.  Looking at the map, it appears that much of Africa has had the wherewithal to not destroy itself with industrialization and suburbatardation.  In this regard, I see the African continent as perhaps the wealthiest on the planet.
18  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bernie Sanders is WRONG about Sweden on: August 26, 2019, 05:44:54 PM
People who love the idea of socialism love to tout that Sweden is the best place in the world, and that it is what the USA should be. Bernie in particular echoes these statements, but these people fail to notice one key thing about Sweden -- it has RUTHLESS capitalism embedded in its nation to be able to support their massive entitlement programs.

Sweden isn't a nation that has what some call "warm, fuzzy, friendly capitalism" where people aren't fired (or laid off) and old companies are protected. This simply isn't the case in the least.

Sweden is a nation with much larger taxes on the poor and the middle class, and they feature non-progressive taxes on consumption, social security, and payroll taxes (which make up a much larger percentage of GDP for Sweden.

Sweden literally almost destroyed itself with JUST SOCIALIST policies. But they saved themselves from large scale issues by embracing large scale ruthless capitalism, with low taxes on companies and incentiving companies to come to Sweden.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-bernie-sanders-is-wrong-about-sweden-11566596536

Thanks for sharing.  The problem with most discourse on  the topic is that people think there is some kind of capitalism VS socialism thing going on, rather than recognizing that both are absolutely essential and neither can ever be reomved from the equation.  It's almost like the "nature vs. nurture" debate -  while good points might be made the whole thing is comedy and needlessly divisive because of course you always have both.  There's no way to prevent people from taking care of themselves and being greedy, and sometimes this has a useful result.  There's also no way to stop people from taking care of one another and acting as a society (hint - you can read this isn't that cool).  Also, this sometimes has a useful result.  If we would focus on the details of what policies we like or dislike and how to improve then we would do a lot better than fighting over which word we think means something cool or not.

any idea when crex24 will be back online or why they have it disabled?

Well, it's up to Funk, but he's offline since July 30th...

Which brings me to this: I'm going to be honest here but I always loved the Woodcoin project, the image, the scheme, the goal and what Funk did and what he seemingly stood for.

But, once again, it's clear that as much heart this coin had from the beginning, unfortunately, it also suffers from a major flaw, meaning this coins is not *really* decentralized. I say that because everything was and is up to Funk and his hiatus represents very well how much this coin suffers withuout him...

Thanks Bathrobehero.

And you dear reader.

Yeah, you have a point.  If nobody cares about this project but me it isn't going anywhere fast.
