101  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How does a new person break into bitcoin mining? on: August 25, 2013, 11:28:14 PM
I am curious about opinions.

Just say you have a person today that wants to start bitcoin mining. How do they start and be able to at least ROI their investment? Just curious about what your plan would be.

Buy used 5 series GPUs, get free electric, mine altcoins, trade to BTC.

Was going through some boxes earlier and found a Freezer 64 that used to be on at Athlon 3700+ years ago, thought 'it's a shame that'll never be used again'. I had been thinking recently of replacing the ramsinks that I'd had on the back of my BE...

Is this not overpowered?
Are there differences in the Temps?

From touching the heatsink the one directly on top of the ASIC is completely cool, so is the end of the heatspreader.

Would anyone be interested in a set of the ASIC sink, a little VRM sink with thermal tape applied and a pre cut piece of 3M thermal tape to attach the other side of the stick to any heatsink.

I admit the fan really is overkill but Arctic F8's are silent at 5v, also an insulated bolt on one corner plugs perfectly into the pi headphone socket and a cushion on the opposite corner resting on the heatsink works well. I had already made the GPIO fan breakout for when the back was just covered in little ramsinks, they are now on the flat face of the mains adapter which was getting very warm. Found a piece of aluminium stock I've had for years and hot glue gunned the heatsink to it so it wouldn't wobble and to correct the height difference.

Just make sure you heatsink it well enough Wink

And the mains adapter was starting to get pretty warm too

Do you reckon it would be possible for someone with no SMT experience and a plain iron to be able to replace the crystal without burning anything?

To remove it would you just heat up the centre of the case in order to melt the solder on all of the pads simultaneously?

Already worked out a way to replace the resistor without using SMD resistors!

Obviously the resistor leads would need insulating, I'm more concerned as to whether I can do the crystal. And what size crystal exactly is required? Or can I just attach it in the same way I'll be using for the resistor?

Got my raspberry pi and block erupter mining without a hub. I know it's never gonna ROI but I'm selling my 7970 and I feel like I just need SOMETHING mining away! Plus it's a good use for the pi I've had sitting around for a over a year doing nothing.

So to do this I had to do a few things:

Drilled a 3.5mm hole in my pi case (smallest drill bit I could find) and bolted the Arctic F8 fan on with a 3M bolt with two nuts as spacers and one inside the pi case holding it on.

Made a breakout board to convert the non adjacent 5v and GND pins on the GPIO into a 3 pin fan header.

Soldered the Vin and GND directly to the USB ports and bypassed the main polyfuse.

Plastered the BE in cheap ram heatsinks (these are £1.50 for 8!)

Fan Mount:

GPIO 5v to fan header:

Direct USB power:

Finished and mining:

Future plans:

Get washers for fan mount.

Make fan shroud.

Cut ridiculously long VRM heatsink on the pi in half and put one piece on the block erupter VRM (see pic 2)

Overclock block erupter.

Just done a couple of mods to my pi to get it ready for a single BE.

Drilled the lid and created a fan mount, and a little breakout board for the GPIO 5v which the fan is plugged into. Fanf floats right above the USB port. Power mods; bypass all polyfuses and add direct power supply to the USB ports. You don't really need a powered hub Tongue
108  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining 12 hours/day: is it possible? on: August 11, 2013, 06:11:37 PM
In order to generate bitcoin, do i need to run the miner 24h/24 or i can run it for only 12 hours/day?

I suspect that when i plug off the miner, i'm interrupting the calculation in the middle and i can't resume it when i plug it on again, it will restart from the beginning.

If you run it for 24 hours you get twice as many, that's the only real concern.

Can you install linux on it is the main relevant question. Or just get an Rpi.
110  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Q: will be able to render with ASIC hardware ? on: August 08, 2013, 09:15:20 PM
will be able to render with ASIC hardware with blender or other software (can rendering with V-Ray, Cycles or other).

Yes, just not BTC ASICs, you want a GPU ASIC for that with atleast 2GB of RAM onboard.  Wink
111  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Still have NOT RECIEVED Batch #2 Avalon DEMAND A RESPONSE! on: July 21, 2013, 04:56:13 PM
Would you be able to point out at what USD/BTC exchange rate it will net you more profit to mine say 60 BTC from a piece of hardware that cost 65 BTC to purchase than it would to just hold onto the 65 BTC?

The point you're missing is the fact there needs to be two chronologically separated exchange rates for this Wink

Just an idea which could be very useful over the summer, could temperature control by dynamic intensity be possible? I've had to reduce intensity from 20 to 16 to keep my 7970s under 86°C this last week due to the how hot it's been in the UK but they can run at 19 overnight fine cause it's quite a bit cooler.
113  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: X-Crowd $499 30GH/Sec unit! on: July 02, 2013, 08:18:07 PM
They're still looking for an entire team of engineers - they haven't started development yet.
114  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: July 02, 2013, 06:55:40 PM
Well, I want buy one from BTCGuild. They said 1.2BTC including shipment internationally. That's the best price i know of.

1BTC for the USB and 0.21BTC for shipment.

Stop begging, it's against the rules and stupid and this isn't the place anyway. Get out. Also it'll never mine 0.8BTC in a reasonable amount of time so it's irresponsible to beg for loans to pay for it, get a job and waste your own money. Or sell your GPU.

Good luck with getting the communication worked out bkk, sounds like a headache.
115  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DIY water block to suit Klondike K16 and Burnins 20 (Bitburner?) on: July 01, 2013, 12:11:03 PM
Ah cool, would be interesting to see results with some air moving across them as that's going to be the most common usage of these heatsinks, fully passive ones have to be quite large normally.
116  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DIY water block to suit Klondike K16 and Burnins 20 (Bitburner?) on: July 01, 2013, 08:49:49 AM
Vigil, have you included any thermal via's in your model?
117  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Block Erupter USB - Overclocking/ hacking ? on: July 01, 2013, 08:40:58 AM
Seems it depends if you're confident enough to desolder the surface mount resistors and replace them for higher voltage as well as the crystal.

Using 2 USB slots is a good idea, means you don't have to go messing around inside the USB hub too, gives you up to an amp which is plenty, just make sure you get a bigger cooler - might be up to 4w.

2.5w*1.15*1.15*(14.7/12)=4.05w

(15% more voltage, therefore 15% more current, times (new clockspeed divided by old clockspeed [because of extra number of switches, which is the time in which the chip produces heat])=new output wattage.

Might want to add a ramsink to the VRM too once you've modded it.

119  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Javascript/WebCL miner pillory on: June 30, 2013, 02:39:39 PM
Some websites use bitcoin generation as an alternative for advertisement. If you really think about it, advertisements generally waste a lot of your time since you need to either watch a stupid video or fill a nonsense survey or ... Therefore, although these websites might use your electricity to generate bitcoin, they might be able to potentially reduce the advertisements and increase the quality of the content that you see in the website.

There is a big difference between a few adverts and 100% CPU use.
120  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Which USB hub for Raspberry Pi and BFL Jally? on: June 30, 2013, 10:39:38 AM
The jally isn't powered over USB, so you don't need a hub at all.
