I figured it out, still not enough power running the hub

That sucks, but glad to hear you found a solution! Thanks for letting us know.

Handful of mostly-complete production verson pods undergoing some comparison testing. I'm testing VH's build updates while also trying to get some statistics on peak frequencies attainable at different voltage settings.

Nothing too important, just thought it was fun.

Also I'm updating the first post a bit with photos and info.

LOVE the Serial #. Makes tagging SO MUCH EASIER!
103  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: April 11, 2019, 01:42:21 PM
hey, yeah, they are running perfectly at 175 my apologies. I should have said that. If I go over then that is when I run into problems. I was wondering if I could clock higher but I guess not. I am using one of  these with them https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XN24GY/

OK cool, its one of those things some people don't think about.

Can you tell us what ports your running the newpacs in, honestly, a picture of your setup would be good too.
104  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: April 11, 2019, 01:04:14 PM
So question now, I have the miner set at 175 Ghz per each stick but an extra power supply set up that I was using for my antminer s7 on the 419 usb hub. Is there any way to clock these higher to get more efficiency? If I add any thing higher than "--gekko-newpac-freq 175" than it becomes very unstable. Is there any instructions I can put in my .bat file that would not make all of them clock so high and drop but get more efficiency or is this as stable as it gets? I have 6 newpacs and active cooling + 180-240V power supply attached.

Hey JohnDon87, at 175 the NewPacs should not have issues running on the GekkoScience USB hub. Question though because I didn't see this asked anywhere, do you have some kind of active cooling? if the units heat sinks are too hot to hold onto, they are too hot period.
105  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience is finally building a 16nm Pod Miner on: April 10, 2019, 08:26:52 PM
You are getting mistaken. the PCIe slot on a mobo is 75w the 6Pin PCIe Cable can handle 150w give or take a few (possibly more if someone wants to confirm).

gt_addict is correct, the cables and the connector on the pod themselves are rated at 13A and are run off a external power supply. In sidehacks case, a configurable power source so he can monitor the raw power usage, others use a break out board and a HP common slot power supply, or just a standard PC power supply with decent power ratings. just make sure your using 16 gauge wires.

heres an example of the powersupply/breakout board kit

Hey Gage, just to be sure, you installed cgminer using the directions on the first page correct?
107  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: April 08, 2019, 12:32:01 PM
What is the point in mining using Gh?  Huh Huh Huh

The idea being that the miners use minimal power in for the output, yes in Gh, there by creating a VERY efficient mining tool that allows for not only people looking for creative power efficient ideas, but schools and teaches a cost effective way to teach how blockchain/mining works.

vh, you have out done yourself as always. Thank you for your amazing work with this project!
109  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: April 05, 2019, 03:59:30 PM
My power source would be your breakout board for a HP-DPS800, if I can find it. So it can't run a PI controller and a 12v fan and USB fan?

our web store still keeps the break out boards and HP1200 power supplies in stock if needed.

This is so kick ass! Love your work man. I'm currently in the US on holiday and would love to purchase one when I get back. I live in Australia, any resellers looking to ship my way?

419Mining will eventually be selling world wide eventually but as sidehack stated, initially we will be selling in the US. We would be willing to sell out of the US BUT we cannot provide any warranty outside of the US right now which kind of goes against our entire business model.
111  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: April 05, 2019, 01:27:51 PM
Maybe a stupid question.

But you can't use 8-port for mining? EDIT: Never mind, I misunderstood what you wrote. Smiley

How many NewPAC can the hub on the left handle?

Both hubs are designed to handle 6 USB Mining Sticks, the additional ports are for small addons (Raspberry Pi, USB Fan) that require less than 2 Amps of power.
Both the black and the aluminum hub group the ports into 4 sections, ports 6 and 7 share 6Amps, 3 and 4 share 6 amps, 5 and 2 share 6 amps. Port 1 and D(on the aluminum) are on a 2Amp max fuse. the big difference is that port D(aluminum only) is not connected to the hub itself, so it can only provide power, similar to a wall brick for cellphone charging.

Theoretically, you could run 7 sticks in both hubs, but the 7th miner would have to be run at lower speeds to keep it under the amp limit.
112  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: March 19, 2019, 11:49:10 PM
... All you need is this hub and one of these 12V 10A power bricks for $15 $12 (au/eu/uk/usa plugs available) and you are good to go  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Wink
You won't find a more reliable usb hub and power supply.

Just watch your power draw, the barrel plug on the USB is only rated at 8A.

@419Mining,

I'm interested in that power supply,  do you know what the power efficiency is for it under decent load like 5-6 Amps?

I'm getting pretty terrible efficiency with the blocks I have, USB meter reporting ~9watts and the thing's pulling 12+ at the wall for ~80%.

I dont have any of the units set up on a test bed right now but they are DOE Level VI rated at 88% efficient. They have less than 1mA of power leakage so most of the efficiency is lost as heat but at 88%, unless you buy a meanwell or a titanium PSU, you wont get better quality. When I get to the shop tonight, Ill see if i can run a few tests for you.  Sidehack may also have a quick answer, we sent him a few test samples when we brought them into the states.
114  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: March 18, 2019, 12:19:55 PM
Saw this power brick on Amazon.. It might actually max out the power needs for the Gekko Hub as it puts out 10A vs the 7A the 419 brick has.. Until I found that I thought I was going to have to put the full power supply package and then just plug in more hubs as I got them to make sure I could run 6 of the NewPacs on the Hub.. Also saw a couple interesting fan options probably overkill for the hubs to keep them cool but better be safe then sorry.. I would think even if one fan failed it would keep them from overheating..

Power Brick: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z9X4GLW

Dual 120mm Fans with 3 speed settings: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JLV4BWC

Im going to probably buy my first newpac this week and hopefully get it up and running and then get the hub and such to expand soon.

Careful on the Amazon power bricks, most are cheap junk in a pretty case. We sell one that we tore down to the bits to verify it was good quality. Has a 3 year warranty and passed all the certification test. You will pay more but you get what you pay for, or you get a fire, its that simple.

We are planning on getting 10A bricks, but its not cheap bringing in a full case of units to sell one or two. The other option like MineFarmBuy said, a good quality PSU if you dont mind the aesthetics/noise of it.
115  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: March 18, 2019, 12:12:13 PM
Darn it.. How long till you guys get more hubs built.. Went to put one of the heavy duty hubs into my cart and said 0 available.. Ive looked I might have one option that's viable as an option which is heavy duty and can do 2.1A per port but its a wee more expensive then the GekkoScience one even including the add on power supply...

We still have a few in stock and will be replenishing before we run out.

116  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: March 04, 2019, 01:24:35 PM
Yes i know i can run em on their own frequencies its @ this forum how to do that. But thats why i am in doubt, should i run different instances or adjust voltage?

You wont need to adjust the stock voltage, it will get you up to 600Mhz, if the stick will support it, not all are built the same and some just wont make it to exactly 600Mhz. Try starting out lower, around 300 or 400Mhz, then raise the frequency by 10 or 20 and watch it for a week.
Dont worry about the HW errors, just watch your hashrate. does it match where it should or did it go down? Do this till you find the sticks top frequency. Most can get up around 575Mhz if done right.
You can check your voltage setting by referring to vh's previous post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5053833.msg48600421#msg48600421) and make sure its at the stock setting.

and P.S. LOTS AND LOTS OF COOLING.

Its not a stand or box its a different top plate. Something ive always wanted to try but ideally need a copy/file of the decal/sticker thats on top of the black edition hub. Then I can start the process and see how it turns out.

I have a 3D object Model of the top plate if you're interested.
118  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: February 27, 2019, 07:14:13 PM
Hey Filax, Great job with the model/printing. I think the model you are referring to is our stand. The first iteration did have closed walls with vents but the heat dissipation was actually far better once we removed the enclosure and allowed the air to move freely once the heat sinks had been passed. Our plan was to add ducting to direct the flow directly over the heat sinks but we couldnt reliably match the fins to the heat sinks due to variance in the USB connection angle. We also would loose the ability to have it universal for more than the GekkoScience hub.

For those that buy from resellers (like us), please be kind and remember we do have a stock of the older but still perfectly good black plastic hubs.
