101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Storage crypto currency on: November 16, 2014, 08:33:19 PM
Storage is the easy part, but what about bandwidth and traffic?

I just started reading about driveshare (storj) today.

How many teenagers are going to rent out their empty hard drive space, only to have their parents screaming at them for using up all of their high-speed account traffic?

Most people don't realize that there are GB/month limits.   A storj node serving files could easily max out someone's account, couldn't it?

Also, concurrent users, is there a way to limit them so the entire pipe isn't consumed by file transfers?

Imagine trying to watch a youtube, and because of your maxed out connection you can't.   So you end up shutting down your storj node while you watch youtubes, and then turn it back on again.

I haven't played with any storj software yet, so all of these comments may not pertain to the software they're currently building. I just wanted to give a heads up ahead of time.

Instead, look at where we are at now? The dev is chased away, and we all have nothing.
Leaving is a choice he made by himself, I do not think anyone else is responsible for that choice.

Huh

I think lajz99 is quite proud of himself. Don't take that away from him.

oh and I'll include a random Hotty with each H.O.T.T.I.Y.

While I like looking at those, they do violate Bitcointalk forum rules.

Specifically the NSFW images (not safe for work)

You're at your desk, you're on the forum while at work, participating in Opal discussion, your boss walks in the room and sees a big photo of a swimsuit model.  Not good. Sad

Poor Barwizi Cry He runs with the GF holders money, still got accused of doing so and now is chased away by them because of that!

Actually what I'm saying is the opposite.

Poor General Funders. Barwizi was trying to re-establish the NRS2.0 blockchain from the snapshot, and instead of being able to proceed he was hounded to death about how much of a scammer he must be.. Now there is dead silence

If you all left it alone for another couple of months, you might have regained the value you put in..

Instead, look at where we are at now? The dev is chased away, and we all have nothing.
105  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | FILE SHARING IN BETA | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: November 15, 2014, 06:59:42 AM
What happen with market? You've annouce them 13day ago... Doesn't put anymore a countdown if you can" handle the date please, this is hurting, ans not only the price, but the faith on this team by the community.

and Wallet? We've got a screen 3 week ago and nothing more since..  We've pass out our spark and thats not a good thing... We gotta need more work to spark it again...(eh,sometime it never happen for some currency...)

That I see, we need to gain up more professionnalism.Now its more like everybody have enter this week have get out in less than 3 day because stuff have not been delivered, and lets say the truth,that pretty suck

Please,Don't fuck up this.  ps: say welcome to 400ish again

[paraphrasing the quote]

Let me see if I can translate this quote above into proper english.

I bought a lot of Opal because you were releasing a whole bunch of new things (wallet & marketplace).  I found out about it early.  I wanted to see the price rise so I could double or triple my investment and then dump most of it after it was released while the stock price soared.

Instead, by the delays created, now I have to wait a longer term to cash out.  I wanted to get in, make a huge profit, and get out.  Now all my plans are ruined. I'm stuck in this investment, for a couple months maybe? That doesn't sit right with me, I wanted to buy and sell, and profit really really really quick.

[proof]

Proof of this, is this idiotic comment that people got in, and had to get out within 3 days of new stuff not making it to release:

"everybody have enter this week have get out in less than 3 day because stuff have not been delivered,"

Really? Buy in, wait 3 days... and then have to get out.  That's your time line? 3 days near a release?  It means you bought in and wanted to SELL as soon as the price started moving. You had no intention of growing your investment or supporting this coin more than 3 days. You were using it as a pump and dump to make a few BTC over a 3 day period.

Translation for devs:

Don't pander to these types of investors who want to make a quick buck and don't realize what is involved with solid development.  The solid dev stuff will always win in the end.  Do whatever it takes to get it right the first time.

There are plenty of trashed coins out there with lots of shoddy code that breaks, or is exploited, or just abandoned because they are pump and dump or devs get in over their head trying to release things too quickly.

Take the marketplace for instance. If it doesn't work right, it's just going to ruin sellers and buyer's trust.  It has to work right from the very beginning.  If it takes longer, then thats what it is going to have to take.

Note to investors: Only buy Opal if you aren't trying to make a quick buck overnight by buying, waiting a few days and then dumping.    This seems to be a real coin, with real devs, with real work involved. It's going to take longer than expected but they will get there.

Well I continue to hope. Even "if" Barwizi was scamming this whole time, he could have turned it around, had a change of heart, anything.

But the General Funders made sure they made it as difficult as possible for him to release a merged Noirbits/NRS merged chain. (Chronic insults, accusations, scammer warnings, etc). Instead they spent most of their time chasing him out of town.

Well they succeeded it appears.  So it appears NRS is dead, and all of us stuck in the snapshot have no hopes of recovering anything unless the community takes over and restarts NRS on their own fork.

I'm only out a couple hundred dollars over this fiasco. If any of you were heavily invested, it might be a good idea to see if you can rally up a dev to restart this project as a community inspired takeover. It's been done before.

One coin I know of is OPAL that did this.. Apparently the Onyx 2.0 dev abandoned the project (just like NRS) and all he left behind was a working POS chain that new Opal devs took over and released their own wallet based on it.

If Opal can do that, I think a community inspired NRS team could do the same.  But the choice is ours.

Otherwise we can wait for Barwizi to return one day. Who knows.

I vote for SUNNY KING from Peercoin and Primecoin

His proof of stake code is re-used everywhere and he continues to develop his coins 2 and a half years later.

(and he didn't even premine, ico, or ipo any of it. imagine that!!!??)

I'm curious. what kinda of things would you all like to see in the marketplace?
(art, music, how-to guides, custom programs, Steam keys, ect)

Some ideas:

Downloadables:

- clipart
- wordpress themes
- ebooks (not scams)

Other stuff:

- domain names for sale
- gift cards (from gyft.com, but payable in opal)

Get a "feed" by working out a synergistic relationship from from http://www.bittask.com/  or www.coinality.com, so people can see that content in the marketplace and pay in Opal

Keep off anything illegal of course.  Also if there is a way to have buyer/seller reputation or reviews somehow, that would be best.

There will be a white paper that will answer all questions regarding Opal file transfers, just a heads up the files are not stored on the Opal blockchain.

 Shocked

This is completely awesome. Great design.  You guys are amazing.
110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | FILE SHARING IN BETA | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: November 01, 2014, 07:11:16 AM
Let me explain the future of opal.

If opal will be everything you said it might be, it will 100% be more valued than bitcoin.

Here's the one single issue:

Blockchains get bloated, by past transactions. Someone sent someone 10 opal 100 days ago, it is stuck in the blockchain that everyone must download and confirm. that is the nature of blockchains.

Now you are talking about file sharing.  That's cool on the onset. But not if everyone must store every file as part of their blockchain forever.

If opal programmers (which I totally believe in), can find a way to let file transfers happen where:

a) the sender sends

b) the receiver receives

c) anyone else that wants the file can get it

d) SUPER SPECIAL: it is on the blockchain for a maximum number of blocks (say 200 blocks) and then gets removed somehow

No one as far as I know, has come up with a self-healing bitcoin blockchain. A blockchain that reverses itself based on transactions or file transfers that have already occured, and are no longer necessary.

**************************************

The single reason why I'm bringing this up is that BitMessage, a blockchain based on messages, was an early starter in crypto. run our wallet/client, and you can send/receive anonymous messages on the blockchain. Guess where they are at now?  Just to run 3 days worth of bitmessages, takes over 3 gigs of your hard drive. If you send a message today, you can expect it takes 4-5 days before it gets delivered. The whole solution is not scalable.  All nodes are victim to the huge data flowing through them.

Now we're just talking about text messages..

Opal wants to do binary file transfers... it's the same problem X100

So based on this, I really do believe in opal developers. So instead of shying away from the tasks on hand, let's use this time to address these types of issues. If you get it. I can bet you that within the next 7-10 days, with a solid proof of concept, code, wallet release, someone will spend more than $50,000USD buying opal in a single click.

Huge money potential is here, but we need to solve real blockchain issues.  Take time out and think about how to handle this sort of thing. If you can find a way to do it, one opal will be worth way more than $350 a bitcoin.

Is this node list up to date?

addnode=46.165.209.144
addnode=54.64.155.117
addnode=79.32.104.81
addnode=192.241.222.102
addnode=173.199.124.185
addnode=65.30.37.95

I'm having a hard time finding full time nodes.

EDIT Seems like a time offset of some sort.

I'm seeing plenty of this in debug.log

Misbehaving: 54.64.155.117:50990 (0 -> 10)
Warning: Peer buckets matched in the future: 1414801785.
Either this node or the peer node has the incorrect time set.
connection timeout
Misbehaving: 65.30.37.95:50990 (0 -> 10)
Misbehaving: 54.64.155.117:50990 (10 -> 20)
Warning: Peer buckets matched in the future: 1414801787.
Either this node or the peer node has the incorrect time set.
connection timeout
Misbehaving: 65.30.37.95:50990 (10 -> 20)

Keeps happening until finally we reach 100, and then it bans that node for an hour or so..  I know daylight savings time kicked in not too long ago. I wonder if it is related.

112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | FILE SHARING IN BETA | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: October 31, 2014, 06:13:41 PM
I think the main reason things have gotten so "calm" ,as you say, is that everyone is on the edge of their seats watching Bitcoins price and bigger traders are too busy getting raped by the 3-4 ico's popping up each week. I never understood why cryptotraders and exchanges support ico's, my reasoning is this: An ICO gets funded, then they do what, they SELL the BTC they raised for fiat and push the price dive on BTC, thus taking all those BTC out of the trade environment, anyone thinking that an ICO would reinvest into the exchange is naive. This hurts everyone, even the exchanges. You might say "Well the exchanges get fee's on ico" well that is true, but they are losing all future potential fee's on those coins, if they had continued trade on the market.

So in Short - ICO's are killing Crypto.

sorry for the rant, I think I might start a thread on this topic.

Yes, you're right. ICO's are responsible for a lot.  Same with blatant scams too.  These people should NOT need to build their software with pre-investment. You get awarded if the market finds what you've already created is decent.  Selling people on hopes, dreams, and great ideas, is just bait. Especially when it comes to crypto.

Any IPO/ICO on premines is a completely unworkable model.  It sucks money right out of crypto into fiat, there is a direct link there.

What crypto needs is education.  Every bit of money someone loses to one of these faulted models, that investment is now gone, and they can no longer support a legitimate cryptocoin.

Someone needs to form an altcoin foundation, publically elected.  Heavy investors will help fund it to see legitimacy being spread around.  We'll inevitably get there, but only after a lot more hurt and pain by the community until everyone wakes up and is forced to reach a consensus.

3) likely two days an update will be available and the exchanges will definitely be running it on the official chain

On Oct 30th will be another 5 day absence, which is tomorrow.

For those of us running a headless / command line version of opal.

Is there any youtube video in the works to show how the new qt wallet works, the current features, and future features discussed?

If I'm in chat with someone and want to point them to a video about opal, a demo video would be really nice.
115  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | FILE SHARING IN BETA | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: October 28, 2014, 07:12:16 AM

The highest Opal has been on Coinmarketcap was 149.. Well outside the top 100

Still a lot of room to grow..

Look how frustrating it was for bitcoin in the very early days, trading at a few cents here and there.  Those that were patient became millionaires.  I don't get discouraged easy. History has a way of repeating itself.

Opal has been on Coinmarketcap since week one of its release..

http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/opal/

I should have specified:  "Not even in the top 100 on coinmarketcap.com on their front page yet"
117  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | FILE SHARING IN BETA | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: October 28, 2014, 12:46:48 AM

Giveaways end up lowering the price. the majority won't have enough, and will generally sell it as soon as the price moves.

I recommend other methods than a giveaway.

To give an extreme example, do you think Google, Microsoft, or Apple would "giveaway free shares" in order to get the stock price higher? When you give something away for free, your are lowering the value.

Right now is not the time to do PR on this coin anyway. We have a few more things to build and release, and test out in the community first don't we?

If this is a long term project, why are we worried about the price right now anyway? Can't we wait another month or so before we push things? People that are pushing price obviously bought some and they are hoping to sell part of their positionoff.  Don't cater to those people who are complaining about the price this early. Their motive is obvious.

Opal isn't even on coinmarketcap yet.  There is so much to do, let's take care of the early stuff before we have 100 extra people in here complaining about this, that, and the other thing.  While it's quiet and we have a tight community this is the best time to finish doing the basics.

With regard to hiring PR experts, we really need to have more merchants accepting the coin. A PR can't pull a rabbit out of their butt based on ideas and future possibilities.  Any PR person will tell you, give them solid things to promote.

Right now, people should be more worried about how much time they have left to buy more coins before the price does go up.  There is always room to buy more at these rates.

Once its start spiking, you won't be able to afford more. Smiley

Don't worry, people are still drifting in here in the meantime.  Every post we write gets us back up on the topic list.

The compiled binary was named bitcoind. This was either done on purpose, or a result of poor development.

I'd go with the "poor development"
119  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | POS | Anon Encryption Suite | HTML5 WALLET + STORE IN DEVELOPMENT on: October 26, 2014, 07:24:55 PM
edit: just saw yet another coin that copied your roadmap btw lol
pls tell us, the investors, this will be closed source?

Copying a roadmap is easy.  Even I can copy a roadmap.

To insert working code, maintain the network and troubleshoot problems, that's the hard part.

Closing the source isn't a big deal like most people think it is..

Bitcoin is open source. You'd think "omg, Bitcoin's code is not closed source!  Everyone can copy bitcoin!"  Well.. see how far that got all these stupid altcoins that go nowhere.  It takes a team of real developers to keep a  coin alive, not just plug-and-play copycats.

So whether or not Opal goes closed source (I hope they don't, because I don't run closed-source software), shouldn't matter to an investor.

It is the community support, dev support, and merchant participation you are investing in the most.  Not  the actual code.

firstly i cant even get the blockchain to download.

The wallet is bugged. Barwizi said he's releasing a new one in the next couple of days.

i have added confi file , but still not connected

There is hardly anyone running bugged wallet nodes right now. Of course you can't connect.
