101  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASICMiner chips out of fab next week on: December 14, 2012, 03:14:58 PM
Right now, I think all the vendors need to just produce a working product.  Otherwise they are no different then those guys talking about a cliff and how to not go over.
102  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Has anyone looked at Chromebooks? on: December 13, 2012, 01:58:47 PM
Tiger direct and geeks.com too have really cheap deals that come up.  I would check all three.
103  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why does December get so damn boring? on: December 12, 2012, 01:25:25 PM
Too many people focused on going home or time off. December is very dull.
104  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bASIC graphic renders and diagram on: December 11, 2012, 01:56:45 PM
Here's design of BTCFPGA custom-ASIC:

Pretty cool, isn't?!  Grin
So where can I order your design and when do you say your going to ship?  I hope you say December, HA, LOL  Love this post.....
105  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Investment in Litecoin: Good or bad idea ? on: December 11, 2012, 01:38:15 PM
Not trying to knock Litecoin but I agree with the above statement.  Now if you have an online venture that took both BTC and Lite that might be of value both to you and Litecoin.

I would say the real value to Litecoin is to mine more of them with current gear then you could with bitcoin and then to trade for bitcoin but that is just an idea.
106  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hashrate going down! on: December 10, 2012, 04:13:24 PM
One argument is that business (and governments?) with a stake in bitcoins success will buttress the network out of obligation. I think it's plausible... Paypal runs servers too. Then again, in the face of profit it must be tempting to defer the responsibility to someone else. We see that dynamic in the industrial sector all the time with regards to environmental hazards.
I don't think this will happen and here is why, I think those who know about bitcoin hopes it works.  If you look at the current fiscal systems around the world it is really built on trust and nothing tangible like gold or other past solutions.  Trust is really in short supply and can't be controlled using current methods (LIBOR is the best recent example).  Technology is moving way to fast for governments and even businesses to keep up (.dot come boom really knocked a bunch of biz people are their rears as an example) in developing ways to manage.  I would say that if I were a government or major business looking to the future something needs to come along to change the game that works better with the digital world we are creating.  Bitcoin or any crypto coin looks to be that next "thing" just like paypal was.

Who's to say that the U.S. was not the ones to start this to support continued its future as a world economic leader?  Keep in mind SHA-256 was by the U.S. and they have been keeping tabs on its development.  It really would not surprise me if some economic think tank back in Virginia did not offer this up as a solution to combat projected declines or other issues.

If you really want to know what the government is freaking out about check out seven revolutions from the CSIC:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pccKiOVJ6Mw
107  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hashrate going down! on: December 10, 2012, 01:40:41 PM
I would think this is kind of expected with the halving.  The question is if the rate continues to drop with or without ASIC.  Without ASICs and it continues then we have a problem of people leaving bitcoin to game or do something else.  With ASIC (and I would expect the rate to be jumping up and down) we will have wild flux's in value, people mining and volume of coins on the market.  I hope this rate drop is minimal and then with ASIC's shoots right back up and higher.
108  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: I created a wiki entry for Pirate on: December 09, 2012, 09:43:56 PM
There should be some documentation of his (mis)deeds in the wiki.

I started this measly article, if anyone who knows more about the situation would like to fill in more details for posterity, be my guest.
Nice idea, tones of info here that should be put up on this site.  I thought there was someone or a group attempting to put allot of information together to go after pirate, what came of that?
109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What to expect from Bitcoin Magazine on: December 08, 2012, 04:01:42 PM
Well good luck, magazines are a buisness model that troubles me but again good luck.
110  Other / Off-topic / Re: And some more delays in BFL shipment plans on: December 07, 2012, 01:57:58 PM
For anyone wanting to sell their SC spot in line hit me up.  Might as well get some of your money back since BFL is line right.
111  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Project: custom 19in rack passive cooling system on: December 06, 2012, 02:00:53 PM
This setup is getting sick, wow it is just looking cooler and cooler (both in style and temp, Wink ).  Question, on the APC backup at the bottom, what model is that and does it have a standard plug into the wall or a more industrially style plug?

Thanks for the kudos. There is a long way to go before it will be up and running...

The UPS (top) is an APC Smart-UPS XL SUM1500RMXL2U 2U Rackmount paired with a APC SUM48RMXLBP2U Smart-UPS XL Modular 48V Extended Run Battery Pack (bottom). This will keep all my gear powered for over an hour even while mining, or over three if I shut down mining. The SUM1500RMXL2U does indeed have a regular 120VAC 15A (residential) plug.
That's cool on the UPS and gives me something to think about so thanks for the info.

So one hour with mining but three without, wow, don't you love how this stuff just sucks the juice.
112  Other / Off-topic / Re: My palms are still sweating after watching this video. on: December 05, 2012, 01:15:55 PM
WTF. I'm still shaky from that video. I'm soooo tempted to tag this NSFW now.  Wink
God, if their pay were less than $1m per year the tower's company must've hired Spiderman and his crew.
Na, that tower is probably in some third world country and they get paid in like dong or something.  If that tower was in the US, they probably would not have allowed a tower that tall to be built and the regulations would not have allowed for this kind of repair to be authorized Smiley plus unions would have said it is a four man job and not two.
113  Other / Off-topic / Re: December 21st, according to dank on: December 04, 2012, 12:37:07 PM
It won't matter, everything ends on the 22 according to my calendar.  Wait, who put this Mayan calendar on my desk, Wink
114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What Got You Started With Bitcoin? (ie. Trading, Selling, Mining) on: December 03, 2012, 01:11:44 PM
I was doing research for my college IT class and came across it.  Then a friend mentioned because I have solar I should consider it and I have a CPU running most of the time at the house so why not see it do something when I am not on it.  As they say the rest is history.
115  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] One BFL single with SC upgrade on: December 02, 2012, 07:23:45 PM
I want to sell one of my BFL singles with the SC upgrade order number 1832 so not first but very early.  To keep it simple send me a PM for what you to pay and here is what I propose:
1. Once we agree on a price (the unit and shipping) transfer the coins or dollars through Paypal and I will work up a receipt for the sale with both our names and address.
2. I will continue the mine the device for you and all production goes to you with no overhead.  I will even point CGminer to your pool if you want or we can work something out.
3. Once I get the email to ship the units back I will ship yours off and once I get them back I will ship yours out by two day mail with a tracking number.

If you want to use escrow lets talk but open to that as well.

117  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Spent a long afternoon with my Air Compressor on: December 01, 2012, 03:37:56 PM
Probably not the best example...  Did you notice the Net Profit line?  Or the 15 year payoff?  Wink

It's not ideal compared to what we are used to, but a 15 year payoff is 6.7% annually. This is considered to be a good investment in the non-bitcoin world. If you found such a good investment, you could ride it infinitely with a 4% Safe withdrawl rate.

Bitcoin people kind of have their heads up their asses when it comes to what a normal return is.

Wow, this is impressive.
I can send that money away to a bank for 5.5% annual interest with only 1 year lockdown of the cash.

If a bank promised me 6.7% if i invested my money with them for 15 years i would laugh them in the face.

There are a few places, in the real world, where you get 7+% for less than 15 years of lockdown Smiley

Taking a chance and buying an asic that might be worth 0  and generate 0 USD, 7 or 9 or 14 years into the future is just not an option.

/GoK

Well as they say nothing ventured nothing gained so we will need to see what happens when ASICs hit.

Sorry if this is somewhere else but what makes a series 1 any different then the other offerings?
120  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Big Buyer on BitFloor on: November 28, 2012, 10:15:16 PM
As an unaffiliated outside observer, I belief both sgornick and shtylman make valid points here and it's not obvious that either is completely right or wrong.  We all know that resolution of conflicts of bitcoin is a legal grey area.

shtylman built a good exchange that was unfortunately caught in a bad situation (or so the story goes) and has done a decent job of attempting to recover from it under difficult circumstances.

sgornick makes excellent and valid points about how that recovery was executed and the potential risks going forward.

Let's not resort to name calling or attempting to silence valid criticism.

Let's use this forum as intended, as a free and open discussion that benefits the entire community.  Put the information out there (color it if you must toward your point of view) and let the each individual decide what's best for their own interests.
