101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Feathercoin Official Weekly News #1 on: September 25, 2013, 05:23:45 PM
What happened to justabitoftime?

What did he learn that made him sell as his coins and run away from the community that HE BUILT?

I bet that's a great story.

He wanted everything to fast. He is completely responsible for UNOCS which was a big fail.
Now he dont have almost any influence on FTC and he lost trust of most members.

FTC is now taking continuous and steady steps in developement, instead of justabits superhype.

Good job in responding to the underlying assumption, in this case that he 'learned something' that apparently made him sell.
102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Feathercoin Official Weekly News #1 on: September 25, 2013, 11:12:36 AM
Great post! Ive had interest in FTC for some time now and its great to see something like this! It really shows that this is a growing project with continuing support instead of just being just another coin (which there certainly seems to be quite a bit of these days!)

Thank-you. I think you are probably one of the few people who actually read the thread rather than just seeing the word "Feathercoin" and reacting.
103  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Feathercoin Official Weekly News #1 on: September 25, 2013, 11:10:28 AM
I'm just curious as to why John M. (justabit...) has basically gone silent on FTC. Supposedly cashing out all of his FTC after stating many times he is so "glad" to be invested in FTC then a week or two later selling out all and basically going silent on the FTC forums.

You were on the thread where he gave his explanation on the Feathercoin forum and his email in the footer. He has also said this:

2 Weeks Ago JustABitOfThough said "Glad I got out of ltc around 3.30. With Gox continuing to lose market share, rough road ahead for ltc."
http://trollboxarchive.com/byid.php?id=15387603

Let's not pretend like this whole domain isn't full of people making unfalsifiable claims about their 'holdings'. Mostly people just say whatever they have to to suit their port folio. Not saying that's what's going on here with John but it's the reason why I don't pay attention to claims like this.
104  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Feathercoin Official Weekly News #1 on: September 24, 2013, 05:05:04 PM
Thatīs why I decided to keep mining this coin, a real hard work, and some real faces, support and marketing, this must work out.

Thanks so much for your support.

Feathercoin Official Weekly Update
Tuesday 24th September 2013

This announcement marks the beginning of a new series of Feathercoin updates. Our intention is share the work we are doing with the wider community, we plan to release these updates every Tuesday between 1-4pm GMT. We may choose to change these times in order to reach a wider audience, there is a summary at the end of this post and a copy of this announcement can be found on our forum.

Feathercoin Key Stats

160 days since genesis block creation
Approx. 17,000,000 Feathercoins created
Approx. 12 days behind target generation rate

Feathercoin is an innovation of values and began with a firm belief in sustaining the innovation that came before us. Because it's not about being first it's about being right and having the determination and commitment to see it through in the long term. We think people are more important than technology which we see as being there to bring them together. In fact we think the work that needs to be done now is to make the technology disappear. This is the Feathercoin team lineup as it stands:

The Feathercoin Team (Hours per week)

Peter Bushnell (@Bushstar) 60hrs+
Chris Ellis (@Chrisj) 40-60hrs
Ruth B. (@Ruthie) 20-40hrs+
Mark P. (@UKMark) 20-40hrs
Dr Geoff Gibbs (@Entimp) 10-20hrs
Mark H. (@Nutnut) 20hrs
Svenn (@svennand) 20hrs+
Maria N. - Part Time but available on demand
@Ghostlander - Part Time but available on demand

There are many others who have worked incredibly hard. Special thanks to Sunny King for his continued support.

We go online to get offline
Our focus over the coming weeks will be to take a bottom up approach, getting Feathercoin and the crypto technology behind it out to the masses. The internet is like a map, in many ways it is jealous of the offline world. Add to this the fact that approximatly 2.5bn people in the world do not have access to financial services, with our low transaction fees and fast confirmation times, along with our SMS Wallet (see below) we are well placed to complement Bitcoin.

While he is not busy disintermediating the global payment networks, @UKMark likes to watch football & spend time with his family. So we are very grateful for all the time he has put in building the SMSWallet which means users in the UK and US (for now) are able to send and receive Feathercoins over the SMS network, independently of the internet.

This is an important part of our strategy to bring Feathercoins to the wider population with plans to start rolling our a pilot to the homeless in London UK later this year. More work needs to be done on the usability and we are very grateful to our early adopters like Erika who take part in our usability studies:

In camera usability study with one of our early adopters Erika, interview conducted by ChrisJ

Beer for Feathercoin Part II
Our second Feathercoin meetup was huge success, we had many people turn up including Svenn who came all the way from Norway and many others coming in from across the country. If you want to get involved please sign up to our meetup group.

We were joined by a film crew, the very talented Olly Newport & Chris Leydon getting
a shot of one of the Feathercoin payments.

Our intention here is to create real world connections with small businesses and the local community in order to work from the ground up. We believe that the ground level is the best perspective of all, this hyperlocal approach is going to help characterise us in the next year. You can expect to see the video of the event in the next few weeks, we hope it will help to involve the wider world in to this movement.

Beginning in London and Oxford UK once we have a workable model the plan is to scale out the same format the world over. We believe that our power comes from our global reach and we plan to put a lot work in to increasing the diversity among Feathercoin users.

Local Feathercoin
Which brings us nicely on to an improvised project by @tuneman1980 and I who asked the community on our forum for their real world locations which we have compiled in to the Feathercoin Global Map as part of our drive:

Feathercoin Kickstarter - Building on our strengths
We are focussed on developing our strengths and one of things that really defined us early on was the entrepreneurial spirit and it still does, which combined well with a generous atmosphere within the wider community. There have been many bounties, much free time and community support.

We really want to push this further with our Feathercoin Kickstarter project. It will be rough, it will be dirty but there is still time for you to have your say.

Feathercoin Market Place
The Feathercoin Market Place is currently undergoing some maintenance after the initial round of feedback. Bushstar and Maria are working hard to build a Feathercoin Online Wallet with Escrow facilities.

Feathercoin - The Miner Update - Hard Fork Block 87948
The latest Feathercoin version 0.6.4.4 is now available and is a mandatory update. This update includes a hard fork of the block chain to accommodate the changes made in this patch. This hard fork should happen roughly around the 1st October which is only a week away.  To be able to send and receive Feathercoin after block 87948 you have to use the new client. Continuing to use old clients after the hard fork could result in the loss of coins.

Primarily this update is to further the refine of the difficulty adjust. Though the current Feathercoin difficulty which we changed to get us out of a tough spot it is not fair for long term miners who have to experience 41.4% swings on every adjust. The new code will adjust four times more frequently at 126 blocks but to approximately 9% which still gives the exact same overall adjust. To prevent the difficulty from being sent up or down too rapidly the current 504 sample window is being maintained and damping is being introduced to reduce fluctuations between extremes.

There have been long running discussion and arguments on the Feathercoin forum including simulations of various different options surrounding this solution. Feel free to take a look at the latest discussion here.

To get the latest update please go to the Official Feathercoin Website and download the client from the homepage.

Official Feathercoin Website

Changelog:
Move to 126 difficulty adjust with 504 averaging window and .25 damping
Reduce effectivness of Time Warp attack
Reinstate CAlert system
Make getnetworkhashps more accurate
Release Windows binary with QR encode

TL;DR - Growing from failure
We have faced some big challenges, we stumbled along the way but we got back up and and we are here to stay. It's not the mistakes that will define us, it is how we grow from them. If you want to join us on our journey the only thing that needs to qualify you is how much you care! You need a passion for currency choice and you need to believe in Feathercoin. Come say 'hi' on the forum.

Follow us on Twitter @Feathercoin where we are very active.

Thank-you for your time.
106  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Thinking of switching to mining Feathercoin instead of Litecoin on: September 24, 2013, 04:16:30 AM
i can see why you'ld go the way of FTC, LTC isn't getting too much publicity lately, and the Gox debacle just continues (although we all saw that coming in fairness.

But FeatherCoin isn't being talked about at all, so not sure what that'll do with the value....

Mining is a risk anyway Smiley

I dont have time for this.
Mine FTC, it is a good choice, difficulty is still low and development team is strong (http://forum.feathercoin.com/)

107  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do most people automatically think Bitcoin is a scam/ponzi scheme? on: September 23, 2013, 02:09:23 PM
Sell USD and buy bitcoin because it's the right thing to do, not because you want more USD.
...
P.S. Oh and for the love of God, don't talk about mining unless they explicitly ask about it first.

^^^It's all about this^^^

I can't stand the dollar junkies. Snorting that crap, telling themselves how all their fears will go away if only they had more of them. They don't even want dollars, they want the freedom that they (apparently) buy. They only think they want dollars because the law tells them that and they have to weave a story about how it's really their choice because the truth is too humiliating for them to stand.

Why give something that kind of power of you? Seriously.
108  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EXPOSING PHENIXCOIN: The hype and possible scam on: September 23, 2013, 01:39:23 PM
Really grateful to @Bitsinmyhead for doing this thread and for those of you who keep surfacing it. Honesty has to pay more than fraud and people who work hard to dig deep and find the truth and bring it to everyone's attention should be congratulated. It's about time we started rewarding the right behaviour around here.

I have archived Kevlar's comment too, that's a keeper!
109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How are you spreading the word about bitcoins? on: September 21, 2013, 11:56:04 AM
Please share.

When someone asks how much my bike cost, I say "less than 200 bitcoins". Usually they ask "what is it?", so I give them advice to google "Bitcoin".

That's really good, I will try that one myself.
110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How are you spreading the word about bitcoins? on: September 20, 2013, 05:00:54 PM
Hi all,

Im semi new to bitcoins. Been involved with it for a few months now, reading up on it and learning more and more every day.

Bitcoins seems like such a great concept but its value comes from popularity. The more people use it, the more valuable it becomes.

And the more people use it, the higher the price will become for those of us speculating here Smiley

So I think the most powerful thing anyone who IS speculating could do is to spread the word about bitcoins among their peers.

I personally have started posting about bitcoins on facebook and also do sometimes talk about it amongst friends.

I also recently invested in just-dice and plan to get all my friends who do get involved with bitcoins to invest in the site.

What other methods are people using to spread the word about bitcoins? Please share as Id like more inspiration on how I can go about affecting as many people as possible to buy into the concept of bitcoins.

Tshirts? car stickers? etc

Please share.

Good ideas.

But keep in mind that it's about more that just bitcoins, we need to spread the word about digital currencies in general. In the future, there will be multiple competing currencies and stores will accept a variety of payment methods. The unknown factor is which coins will the consumer be most likely to embrace. In my tests, consumers don't get nearly as excited about bitcoins as they do about goldcoins. And I've done a hell of a lot of tests. You mention getting your friends to invest? I think the greatest returns will come from the emerging alt coin sector.

The price of a single Bitcoin in June 2010 was something like 10 cents. Nothing substantial has changed in the coin's fundamentals since then, yet now the price is over $100.00 a coin. I wouldn't be encouraging my family and friends to invest in something that is probably overbought to the extreme. It would make more sense to look at coins that are priced in the range of the Bitcoin of June 2010 and try to find the ones with the best fundamentals. Then spread the word about those coins.

I do talk about other coins too, for brevity I just used Bitcoin. But thanks for the ad to your own coin, I have seen the videos.
111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How are you spreading the word about bitcoins? on: September 20, 2013, 12:02:14 PM
This has become one of my favourite pastimes.

Every restaurant/bar/cafe I go in to I always ask if I can pay in Bitcoins, sometimes I get my phone out as if I am expecting to be able to already. Usually the staff member has no idea what it is and then I pounce:

"Bitcoin is a global internet currency not backed by any central bank or government"

This is the hook! They like it and want to hear more.

  • No chargebacks (Bars and Restaurants love this)
  • Bitcoin is like digital gold (this is not a perfect analogy I know, so I stress that it's an analogy)
  • Did you know your fiat is worth x% less than n years ago? Your Bitcoins cannot be inflated away by the government or central bank
  • Imagine if sending money was like sending an email
  • Well Bitcoin will do to the banks what email did to the post office
  • There's a business just like yours who already take it (then give them the details)
  • Bitcoin is rapidly rising in popularity with more interest, I feel very lucky to be an early adopter

The trick is not to go in to any technical detail on the first pass, definitely do NOT try and describe mining, that is for veterans only! Only talk about benefits that are relevant to them.

It's important that you tailor the pitch depending on the person and do not try and sell it to someone who is clearly not interested. If you sense the person doesn't care simply end the conversation by saying:

"Anyway just Google it later if you get time, ask your friends what they think."

Then I give them my card if I have one and tell them they can email me if they have any questions. It's vital that you plant this seed quickly, it should be a short sharp shock that leaves them wanting to know more. Be the first one to end the conversation and try to leave a sense of mystery.

112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / BTC-e lowers number of FTC Confirmations to 10 on: September 20, 2013, 09:34:01 AM
Due to the recent security patch to Feathercoin BTC-e has decided to drop the number of required confirmations down to 10. We are very grateful to BTC-e development team for their confidence.

115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet help on: July 23, 2013, 08:41:53 AM
OK thank you for this. When it comes to putting this on a new mac then how do I do it? I presume I will not lose all my bitcoins?

You replace the contents of the Bitcoin folder in Application Support:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Mac

I recommend for your own piece of mind, practicing backing up a wallet and restoring it just so that you can walk yourself through the process. It can be a bit scary first time if you have a lot of coins.

I found that Multibit Wallet was better for backing up and restoring coins and if you have another computer you could always move the wallet over to there so that you can see they are safe while you do the restore.

Before I ever do a format of my macs I always clone the disk just in case anyway.

Good luck.

Please sign up if interested: http://www.meetup.com/Feathercoin/events/129199462/

In order to pay in FTC you will need an Android phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet.feathercoin

Only load it up with enough FTC for the day and make sure the Blockchain is synced. This is still in beta and will be the first offline test. Any questions please feel free to ask me or head over to the forum at http://forum.feathercoin.com

119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Bitcoin Centralizes Profit in the Hands of Miners on: July 07, 2013, 08:38:18 PM
Unfortunately, without miners to confirm your transactions, it is entirely possible for a government that controls hashing power to control when transactions get processed.   What good is your bitcoin if you cannot spend it unless you register your address with one of these mining entities?

There is another aspect to this, mining use to represent a cost effective way of buying bitcoins.   Now mining is no longer cost effective.

Despite the rebuttals you are right to raise this as a concern. I have been tracking Team China on BTC Guild for some time now:
http://www.btcguild.com/index.php?page=rankings&section=teams

Not very scientific I know but I think we are seeing an increase in centralisation for a variety of reasons.

Check pages 3 & 4 of Satoshi's paper which talks about the Proof of Work model.
http://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

Quote
Page 3
If a majority of CPU power is controlled by honest nodes, the honest chain will grow the fastest and outpace any competing chains. To modify a past block, an attacker would have to redo the proof-of-work of the block and all blocks after it and then catch up with and surpass the
work of the honest nodes.

Page 4
The incentive may help encourage nodes to stay honest. If a greedy attacker is able to assemble more CPU power than all the honest nodes, he would have to choose between using it to defraud people by stealing back his payments, or using it to generate new coins. He ought to find it more profitable to play by the rules, such rules that favour him with more new coins than everyone else combined, than to undermine the system and the validity of his own wealth.

Emphasis mine.

A lot of what has fuelled this rise in price and adoption is greed. If hash rate drops sharply due to lower mining profitability then we could be left with slower confirmations and lower price.

And so the design of Bitcoin continues to be tested as the hashrate continues to rise even as the price drops. One of the interesting difference with scrypt mining is that at least a graphics card or CPU is a multi purpose piece of equipment that they can be used for gaming or sold easily on the open market. Those ASICs are going to make excellent door stops and do nothing for the enviroment.
120  Economy / Speculation / Re: Denial is fading, fear is approaching on: July 05, 2013, 12:45:11 PM
Deluded or high on hopium.

The thing about parasites is that they need the host to survive or else they die with it.

The rise up to $260 was fuelled by greed: put dollar in get more dollar out was the name of the game. But the price is a very poor indicator of strength because it is a reduction of sentiment, like a 3D cube casting a 2D shadow on the wall, by looking at the shadow only you will never get back to the 3 dimensional aspect.

We need to shake these weak hands out of the market, let the strong hands enter.
