Who would know the difficulty would be 1000x harder now than last spring.  Even though the btc price increased 6x.
Most informed miners should have known the difficulty would be 1000x more than last spring; this is why so many of us tried to warn newer miners - they just didn't listen and assumed we just wanted the mining to ourselves. The price no one can predict though.

actually that's not true, most "informed" miners were saying this average 20% increase is unsustainable and not realistic, when few others including myself showed the actual calculator using a profitability decline of 0.001 (20%).

the truth is as long as there is money to be made, the hardware will be produced, resulting in sustained difficulty increase.  Only way for difficulty to slow down is if the hardware cost basis becomes unprofitable - and that solely depends on the btc/usd price.  If we have a long period of $350/btc, then yes you will see difficulty slow down as hardware production/sales slows.  But at the current level, there is no end in sight. Especially with all those new comers pumping out hardware in the THs range now.

The current difficulty is only ~59000TH, 20% is 11800TH, that may seemed like a significant hash power in the old days, but with the new 2-3 TH per unit miners from all the manufacturers. It's really not that much.

The only sure way to predict difficulty is looking at btc/usd.

I am also now a big fan of cex.io, their prices have come down to a level that's very competitive/better than physical hardware, without any of the mining risk, and ability to quickly unload at a moment's notice is invaluable. Doubt i will ever buy another physical miner unless there is a 20%+ discount to the cex price.

just doing currency pair arbitrage with your money, make a directional bet after getting the funds, if btc/usd move in the right direction, they make a lot of money, if the pair moves in the wrong direction, you take the hit - refund btc if btc goes down, refund usd if btc goes up.  They have no risk.

i also got a bridge in my backyard for sale if you guys still think they can make some useful hardware.

looks like we finally have a legit asic maker with good hardware and does what it says, no bs. good job!

however i think you need to improve the price, understand you want to keep the margin high but mining hardware is a rapid depreciating business overtime. 3-6 months from now your margin is guaranteed to erode significantly, so better off with a lower margin/price now(while still much higher than what it will be in 6 months) to make it attractive and drive higher sales NOW.

cex.io May is at 0.004btc/gh, that's $2576 for same 1.4TH (0.004btc*1400GH*460usd). Add on 10% premium for their maintenance fee(the other 10% is just same electricity), you looking at $2800 - risk free mining.

Your may 1.4 TH unit is at $4000 (using the 2unit pricing), and that's not including hosting + risk of hardware issues/downtime.

Anyway to slice it, i just cant bring myself to order this vs buying cex.io shares.

hmm.. cloud hosting eh? nowhere near as much fun! gimme that rig for the wintertime - it's c,c,c,cold in Scotland.

no it's not Smiley but i am just looking at the numbers.  I had 4x antminer running during winter, it does keep you nice and warm lol

KNC is my largest concern right now. They now have more than 13% of the network, and they haven't made it easy to find out and track their data. If they want people to be less concerned about them having local control over machines that solved nearly one-seventh of the network blocks during the past week, then they need to be a little more open with their data and their plans.

It makes me more than a little uncomfortable that of the top five block solvers, only one is definitely a pure pool (BTCGuild), and only two of the five provide any public information (GHash.IO and BTCGuild).

Going by the fact that ex-wall streeters are involved in KnC, things become a little more clear. (see greed is good above)  Undecided

why would knc provide customer transparency?  they set a vague future date, get all the sheeps' fund, use it to buildout massive mining farms for themselves, then deliver to you at the last min of the stated Q2/3 whatever vague date, by then the difficulty is so high (caused by knc using your money) the miners are worth cents on the dollar.

It's the perfect business model, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. First deliverable was to build brand, after that it's just auto drive of get fund, build, devalue, then deliver.

Don't make me laugh. I have 20 years in The City to your 10.

Calling an instrument a futures contract and not permitting short-selling goes against advertising standards.

I expect to be able to short a futures contract because I know the price is going to go down.

"The City" ? Cheesy  sorry to break it to you, but 20 years as a shoe shiner in "The City" doesnt mean much.  Anyone who worked on the street will realize how your rant makes as much sense as a uwe boll movie.

if one is forced to pick between futures vs forward, those contracts are futures as they are exchange traded and with a defined settlement structure.  Inability to short has nothing to do with the contract itself genius, even if you have a regular es mini futures contract if your brokerage refuse to provide you margin you still cant short it, and if cme itself disables short selling you also cant. They did just that to the equity exchanges in the 08 crisis.

Why would I want to buy GHS a month or two ahead of time knowing that the spot price is trending downwards all the time?

because the spot is 0.01 and the settlement for those contracts are 0.008 and 0.004. 0.008 and 0.004 < 0.01 genius.  It's a speculative play on future difficulty/hashrate, just like any other derivatives such as options.

Stop with this nonsense, it's like nails on chalkboard. Go argue about valuation instead, at least then noone will be able to point out how clueless you are, as your guess is as good as mine (well probably not..)

1013  Economy / Exchanges / Re: ***CEX.IO Cloud mining official page*** on: April 08, 2014, 09:07:28 PM

CEX.IO latest gambling wheeze is a “futures contract”. Well, it isn’t a futures contract because you cannot take a short position. It is in fact a forward contract where you have to guess the price of GHS one or two month’s ahead and are then locked into taking delivery at whichever price you buy at.

For CEX.IO to call it a futures contract suggests that they do not know anything about financial contracts and are scam artists.

Stop splitting hair, what does not able to short the contract have to do with anything? futures/forward contracts are very similar, the main difference is one is exchange traded, and the other is mostly private placement with custom term structure. There is nothing wrong with what cex.io did with fha/fhm and calling them futures contracts with a defined settlement.

If you want to argue about valuation that's fine, but whatever the **** you said about them being scam artist because they called the contracts futures instead of forward makes absolutely no sense.

I have been doing this for a living for the last 10 years, you make no sense.

Did you receive these coins directly from Casascius, and do you have pgp custody documents for them? Possibly interested in a couple.

Hi, i bought them from coblee a while back, who was a well known casascius reseller here, he got them all directly from mike in rolls.

Not sure what a pgp custody document is.
1017  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WHITE HOUSE PETITION! STOP THE IRS! MAKE A DIFFERENCE! on: April 03, 2014, 05:43:37 AM
Stop being morons, if you care about bitcoins, sign the fucking petition.

Classifying as property instead of currency is a tremendous detriment to the adoption and use of bitcoin by US business. And US is a critical market for bitcoin, its price stability and future.

This is all new to the government including IRS, they are experimenting. If they see a strong reaction it will affect their future policies and new laws on bitcoin to be more favorable as a currency.

As it is now with only 700 signatures on a forum of 300k users, it is pathetic and shows the government we don't care if they regulate it to shit or ban it.

There is no downside only positive for signing the petition to send a voice to the us govt. Worst case nothing happens you lose 5 minutes.

So get your fucking head out of your ass, all of you anti government anarchy loving lemmings. The only way bitcoin will thrive is by working with the world governments, banks, and businesses while dictating policy and regulation... on bitcoins terms... by lobbying the government.

All this bullshit about bitcoin doesn't need government support to survive or thrive, is exactly that, BS. The world is run by governments and businesses.  Maybe that's what some of you want, to drag bitcoin down to be stuck in the Silk Road era, but that's not what bitcoin wants.

So again sign the damn petition.

In other news, just got off the phone with a nice District Attorney who is preparing a case against Butterfly Labs, who wanted to discuss and get more details on the complaints I submitted last year.

What do you know... The justice system works, even if the wheels do turn slower than we'd like sometimes.

*whistles innocently*

Nice you should make a thread and keep us post it on how its going Smiley Huh

if you actually believe he had a chat with a DA and they are preparing a case against bfl, i have a bridge in my back yard to sell to you.

Only 100 btc...

Government doesnt care, bfl is too small for them.
