This news is not 100% believable. The atmospheric pressure in Mars is not high enough to sustain the presence of liquid water. Due to the low atmospheric pressure, the water will be vaporized, and lost to outer-space. That is the reason why only the heavy gases (such as Carbon di Oxide and Methane) are present in the martian atmosphere.

Because the news presents "a hydrate" as "water."  It's not, of course.

Ojha and his team have watched these lineae form every Martian summer, growing wider week after week until they slowly fade come winter—exactly the times and places where conditions are right for liquid water to exist on Mars. Plus, the surface is crusted with salt, which could help stabilize liquid water so it doesn’t boil or freeze.

Ojha notes that they haven’t actually observed water flowing on Mars. The team took their data from the CRISM instrument on the Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter, which, frustratingly, only observes the surface every day at 3 pm. That’s when Mars is at its hottest and driest, so any liquid water oozing on the surface would have long since evaporated by the time MRO laid eyes on it.

Still, the water left a distinctive chemical trace. “Whatever is flowing on Mars is hydrating the salt,” Ojha says, “and we’re seeing that hydration in the spectral signature.” After extracting spectral information from pixels of the CRISM instrument’s data, Ojha and his team determined that the salts—magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate, and sodium perchlorate—had water molecules interspersed in their crystal structures. That’s pretty strong evidence that they were deposited by flowing water.

we know that there is ice on mars - another form of water no biggie.
but liquid water is big, because it is - atleast for us - the base of life, so there might be aliens right now living on mars :9
Oh, hydrating the salt is a big deal?

Concrete - hydrated.....

Geophysically, there is nothing that would prevent large underground liquid water deposits on Mars.
Those hydrated salt are produced by the flowing liquid water.

Can curiosity reach these channels?
There is not liquid water "flowing" on the surface of mars, because it would boil off before it could "flow."  Period.

Birth right citizenship isn't a Dem vs Repub issue in the USA.  Not at the street level.  It's actually a lot of blue collar Dems who lose their jobs to illegals.  At the top level, Dems advocate this nonsense because they hope to flood the country with poor, low information people who will vote Democratic.  This isn't complicated.  I don't know any Hispanics or blacks that are gungho for "open borders."  I don't know anyone who is for anchor babies.

Non-hispanic white blue collar workers no longer vote democratic. They have long shifted their support to the Republicans. Most of the whites who vote Democrat now are Liberal, LGBT, and radical feminist types. And a simple majority of the Democrat voters are non-White. So in the end, it is still a Democrat versus Republican issue.
Suit yourself.

For some reason, I get the impression you don't live in the USA.

Flowing Water On Mars indicates that LIFE CAN HAPPEN ON MARS. (Screw the religious people Grin )

We'll know in 2020 if life also exists there.  A planned mission will return Martian soil to the Earth for analysis.

Great time to be alive and not brainwashed!  Smiley
That would be very, very interesting if it could return say, a thousand samples from diverse locations.

Something like that might actually be near term possible these days.

Boehner Is Out: What This Means For Government Shutdown Odds And The Debt-Ceiling Fight.....will make any successful and sustainable kick in the US debt limit very tough, especially when one realizes that as a result of accrud debt layering, the real US debt is, as of this moment, about $18.5 trillion - about $400 billion above the statutory debt limit of $18.1 trillion. It also means that in order to kick the can solidly for the next 2 years, the next debt ceiling will have to be just about $20 trillion. There will be quite a substantial shock among the right after realizing this unpleasant development.

This is not complicated.  The solution is simply to stop counting.  All of the Democrats long ago unlearned how to count.  There are some Republicans who were getting pretty good at unlearning, too.  BoringHerr was a paragon of the virtues of unlearning.

On the flip side, though.  It gets harder and harder to kick the can down the road.  Because there are fewer and fewer cans.  Everything comes in plastic containers.  Special, spring steel, kickable cans are needed.

China will make them for us.

The hydrated salts most consistent with the spectral absorption features we detect are magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate. Our findings strongly support the hypothesis that recurring slope lineae form as a result of contemporary water activity on Mars.

Almost All US Temperature Data Used In Global Warming Models Is Estimated or Altered

We have written many times about the fact that the temperature data used in the alarmists’ global warming models are not original data as measured by thermometers. Rather, they are “adjusted” numbers, consistently changed to make the past look cooler and the present warmer, so that more billions of dollars will flow from the world’s governments to the climate alarmists who serve government’s cause. This is, in my opinion, the greatest scandal in the history of science.

This article at Watts Up With That? adds incrementally to that picture. John Goetz analyzes the U.S. temperature data that finds its way into “official” tabulations. This is particularly important because, while the U.S. represents only 6.6% of the total land area of Earth, we account for close to half of the data relied on by the Global Historical Climatology Network. This is a big topic, and you should study the Goetz article in its entirety if you have time. I am still digesting it.

But a few highlights are obvious. First, Goetz finds that approximately 92% (or even more, depending on how you calculate it) of US surface temperature data consists of estimated or altered values. Very little raw data finds its way into the warmists’ climate models–which, of course, is the way they want it. Second, the adjustments that are made to the U.S. data consistently skew the numbers as we have described many times before–they try to make the present look warmer, compared with the past.

I think they will say there was something on Mars, used to be life or water, and then the question will be, what went wrong with Mars?

They'll use it to push the NWO/GlobalCitizens/Agenda2030, to push their climate change thing here, saying we have to shape up and get our acts in order to take care of this planet, because otherwise we'll end up like Mars.

Mars suffered a "climate change" and lost it's water. Do I win anything?

So does State trump Federal when you want it to (weed) but Federal trumps State when you want that to (Marriage)?

Yes. If the feds were to say same sex marriage is not okay, and states did it anyway, I would support that as well. That's because I support basic civil rights for human beings, marriage is one of them.

that's some screwed up thinking there.   Really there are no principles involved here at are, are there?  It's all about I want what I want and it's my right to get it my way and screw you.  I am able to change my opinion here if you can present a logical method to show why your approach doesn't just mean no principles, and no rule of law.

Yes, supporting giving people their rights back is horrible of me.
Look can we just have some honesty here?

You see something okay in Fed enforcing the marriage thing, but not in them enforcing the weed law?

So who gets to pick and choose when and to whom to apply "law" to?

Leaving aside for the moment that this constitutes the very reverse of law, who?

No hiding behind vague slogans please.

The last option of the poll had me laughing pretty hard...

When Nasa announces something im more excited than a kid on Christmas morning.
Its like finding something you lost years ago times 1000.

My pure guess - traces of H2O

Water discowered on mars long time ago. Polar caps on mars contains a lot of water. It's not a sensation. But finding living microorganisms on mars will be a sensation. That would be exciting. Im waiting for this.

Water can only exist on Mars as solid or gas, liquid at that thin atmosphere immediately boils off.  Because in the mid and equatorial latitudes the ground can get to 80F (NOT the air) ground water anywhere near the surface at those latitudes would boil off.  But not at the poles, that is why there is water near the poles.

For this reason if they figured out what causes the streaks on the crater, it would be interesting.  This would be the discovery of a geological mechanism.  My guess is that most people wouldn't be excited about that.

PS.   Reporting is dismally unscientific.  For example -

http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2015/09/26/mars-mystery-solved-says-nasa/

Most scientists already agree that the canyons and gullies that cover the Martian surface were once carved by water that flowed across the planet’s now-desolate surface. Now the plant’s poles also sport massive caps of frozen water. But one mystery persists: what happened?

Liquid water on Mars would be a groundbreaking discovery, imagined by scientists for over a century, at least since Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli captivated the world when he announced the discovery of a massive infrastructure of canals criss-crossing the Martian surface in 1877.

This guy writing does not even understand the effect of pressure on boiling temperature.  I have just explained that no liquid water will be found on Mars....there is no mystery.  The lack of radiation belts such as our Van Allen belts allowed the atmosphere to be ionized, and to be mostly lost.  The atomspheric pressure dropped too low to support liquid water.  There you are.

She's an elected official, she refuses to do her job, refuses to resign, she can't be fired, thus ends up in jail. I don't think she deserves to be in jail but she needs to leave her religious bullshit at the door where it belongs. Religion has no place in politics, it's just a convenient smokescreen to excuse bigotry and hatred.

Really?  Apply this principled approach universally or not at all.

State officials really need to follow the Federal Drug Laws, don't they, and arrest any and everyone in possession of or selling marihuana.

According to YOUR PRINCIPLES.

That's a dumb argument, smoking weed is totally like a specifically consitutionally protected act like marriage. If you want to make that argument then say something like

"Then those that issued same sex marriage licenses when it was illegal should be arrested as well!" example

And then I would say, I already said I don't think she belongs in jail.

Not going to cry over it either though. Bigots who support laws based on bigotry should expect backlash.

No, smoking weed isn't totally like a specifically constitutionally protected act.  Exactly the opposite.

1.  Marriage -
State law issue.  Until the recent Scotus decision.

2.  Weed -
Federal law issue.  No Scotus decision.  No "Right."  A couple states make it legal, but it is still illegal at the federal level.

So does State trump Federal when you want it to (weed) but Federal trumps State when you want that to (Marriage)?

You misunderstand.  I am saying that the Mexican, Chinese, whatever...produces a baby here the citizenship does not have to be automatic, but can be conferred only after a process.  Which can be refined for these cases to require fees.  This eliminates the "citizenship reason" to come to the US to have a baby for a large percentage of those who do it.  That's desirable.  Others might still come to get the free hospital care while having the baby, particularly if it was expected to be a difficult pregnancy.

Birth right citizenship will stay in the United States. The conservative Republicans doesn't possess enough support to overturn it. If any such attempt is made, it will be immediately branded as racist and xenophobic.

Many countries "sell" citizenship in various ways, from outright fees to requiring bringing and keeping certain amounts in the country's bank.  Not uncommonly the amount IS about 500k.

In most of the cases (countries such as Latvia, Canada and New Zealand) sell only PR (permanent residency). To obtain passports, you have to wait for many years. Only a small number of countries (such as Cyprus, Dominica and Antigua) offer passports for cash payment.

Well, that must be the reason why you or I can buy dual citizenship easily with enough money.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but I think people should be able to create fantasies on whatever they want. Might not stop someone suing for damages though. Photoshopping jizz on someone isnt nice either but guess you can't stop people from doing it.

I wonder if Kim Davis could sue the author of the novella using her as a character. I'm doubtful. On the other hand, the U.S. does have a reputation for lawsuits over everything. Who knows.

I think it would be permissible to use a similar, but not exact, character.  Fiction books always have a disclaimer at the front, saying that they are not based on real people or events.  That's not what is being done here.  This is a direct attack on a private person, by political operatives for political purposes.

Look at the summary of the book:

Kim is a simple, small-town woman who finds herself thrown in jail in a dispute over religion and sexuality. She quickly discovers the importance of knowing friend from foe in the notoriously horny women's wing and, with the help of her beautiful cellmate, sets out to learn the ropes.

Let's look at the reviews.  Of course, there are only two, and they read like they were written by the author.

The first and probably last erotic novel I have ever bought. But 5 stars for it being about Kim Davis. A funny book about a laughing stock.

Five stars for the tounge in check play on the idiotic Kim Davis. Regardless of your stance on same sex marriage, there is a beautiful irony in a woman who has been married 4 times to 3 different men and had children from another man while married to her first husband but is against the union of two people just because they are of the same sex. Her supporters are narrow minded and small. One can take a small amount of pleasure in the twist of fate Kim's characters faces.

My opinion?

If Davis had been sent to prison, she'd have been a hero there.

She stood up to the SYSTEM.

Those attempting to ridicule Davis are mean, narrow minded and sick.

In the past also there were similar incidents in the United States. What makes this incident different from the others, is the quantum of punishment given to the official. These sort of punishments were not given out in the past, as the judges were more lenient. Times have changed. The SCOTUS is now controlled by the extreme-left and the LGBT.

It's unnecessary to confront the constitutional question of whether this can be stopped with a bill passed through Congress.

Better would be to simply put a price tag and a process on US citizenship for the anchor babies.  For a half a million USD, kid, we'll process your the kid's citizenship application when he turns 21.

Problem solved.

I don't think that anyone will be paying $500,000 for an American passport for his kid, when it can be entirely free. An illegal Mexican immigrant can give birth to her anchor baby in any of the sanctuary cities, and the government will bear the medical and other expenses. What makes you think that such people will end up paying $500K?
