10282  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE - request for next features on: June 05, 2012, 07:34:38 AM
I also think different GLBSE wallets could be good for traders and investors as well as listed company's.  So each dividend from each separate stock you own gets paid into a different wallet on the exchange if you so wish.  I know you could just do proper accounting but when your counting numbers to eight decimal places it can get very tedious.

this could also be handled by (a hypothetical) "accounting software" that imports the csv. Just saying: maybe glbse site itself shouldn't be pressured too much into offering such accounting-related features. It might be better to have a market establish for that.
10283  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: June 05, 2012, 07:32:14 AM
The point is, that it takes an army either way. Because other people want to take your stuff.

It will be hard to beat Bitcoin's public ledger solution for overall efficiency. Monetizing commodities directly becomes quickly complicated by errors, fraud, and legalized abuse of the systems to account for it.

+1.

A stash of bitcoin is also much easier to protect against an army than any of the other forms of money we talked about.
10284  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: June 05, 2012, 07:06:36 AM
'a default leads to just a resetting of the existing system'

?  Why doesnt every country default on every debt immediately then?

.. My question is what are the consequences of defaulting on debt?  Because the consequences of printing lots of money is easy to see...

It is a problem of managing liquidity.

If there were no debt there would be no money.

...there would be no fiat money.

yeah it is sad how most people think trading debt is the only way to have a system of exchange.

in the usa we used to trade gold coins, then paper that represented gold coins... now im not sure what backs it other than faith and the us army.

There would be no money... PMs would not provide enough liquidity to conduct everyday business.

And it would take an army to move, store, guard, and account for PMs for segments of the economy that relied upon them for trade.

Have you heard of this new highly liquid commodity money? It's called Bitcoin.

Also, thinking less radically: What keeps govts from issuing some sort of commodity-backed currencies that can be handled electronically. I personally don't like the solution as much as Bitcoin, but it's certainly possible to "put gold into a database".

People used to use salt or sheep as money (not very convenient and not exactly scarce or of a stable supply, yet it was used). Why? Because "there would be no money" just isn't an option. Any money is better than no money.

EDIT: oh, and it currently takes the worlds most advanced army to protect the value of the USD, so it's not really an argument to say "it takes an army to move, store, guard".
10285  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-05-30 NORDIC EU BITCOIN BANKSTERS BLOCKADES on: June 05, 2012, 06:50:02 AM
Isn't accepting credit cards for bitcoin just asking to be charge backed to banktruptcy? I think they were just lucky they only got one charge back.

An interesting question. I figured as much until now, but what if you actually have proof of delivery which might well be the case? Will VISA just charge back anyway? How often can you chargeback until you're marked as fraudster and your account closed with VISA/Mastercard?

10288  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who else is bored? on: June 03, 2012, 07:30:11 PM
i'm not sure why you'd be bored.  what i see is a slowly rising price into the teeth of a skyrocketing USD while everything else is getting sold off.  what's not to like about that?

+1

I've been telling people this around the forums, but nobody can see it for some reason. It's the invisible bull run in the USD. The fact that BTC is holding its own truly speaks to the fact that it's a budding market, not a bloated overbought market like most others.

oh no, but people have been pointing out the rally in BTCGBP, for example.

I'm looking forward to "QE3". People will think bitcoin is having a rally, while it's actually the USD falling. Hehe.

ok so what do those russians know what we don't know?  Huh
seems not much.  Huh

Hah, we don't read russian and neither does google translate.

As for the bitcoin transaction stats, its well-known that the recent uptick in bitcoin transactions is due to satoshidice.

But who knows what naima53 was trying to say Huh

pretty clear, I'd say: "500 tysch day total to powder your brain".

Too much powder in brain.
10291  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: June 03, 2012, 01:57:51 PM
Anyone have any comments about 0.77?  Given the lack of response to it, I suspect either no one is using it, or there are no complaints.  Either way, it's about time to release it, because I'm positive there are some users out there suffering (or stopped using) due to the table-sorting bug.

does this support satoshi v0.6 wallet.dat import?

How many of those users had bitcoinica accounts?

10295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One strike web of trust, where a verified personal photo is your ID? on: June 02, 2012, 07:31:00 PM
a) no, that's not anonymous. a photo can be linked to the person.

b) I might be willing to participate depending on what these rules are going to be and how they are subject to change.

It's pretty clear that the photos would probably leak, since they are accessible for members, right? Depending on the conspiracy theories evolving around your private club, people would search the net up and down to identify the members... better not be up to something bad, otherwise the guillotine might be waiting in the end Wink
10296  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: when will bitcoin become practical for every day people? on: June 02, 2012, 06:02:03 PM
2019, 10 years after it's inception, according to Rick Falkvinge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=mjmuPqkVwWc#t=1640s
10297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I suspect GPUMax was compromised and passwords stolen on: June 02, 2012, 05:46:50 PM
If you are a GLBSE user I would encourage you to use two-factor authentication, there have already been over 3 accounts which have been protected by this.

nefario. this is great, so your effort already payed off. congrats!
10298  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [IDEA] - Ripple-like system for Bitcoin investments / p2p insurance on: June 02, 2012, 09:19:09 AM
thanks for clearing things up, ripper234.

Regarding implementation: I'd rather like to see it implemented on OT than glbse. With OT, presumably, you can proove existance of contract without having to rely on central authority. I watched the first of the OT (smart contracts) intro videos and I'll look into it more. Very interesting indeed.
10299  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: June 02, 2012, 08:57:08 AM
Also a very complicated way that requires another computer to be left offline. Is there a real issue with creating a private key and storing it off the computer for a later import in which case the bitcoins can then be sold and the excess bitcoins can be sent to a new private key stored offline? I don't think my computer is vulnerable to any malware and is there even malware that can steal generated keys and send them when the computer is next connected to the internet?

Obviously, offline wallet devices would be nice like the card readers the banks use to protect cardholder data. I know people are working on these.

I need to have the keys on paper as my memory is not reliable.  Wink

Maybe we could program one of these (http://bergcloud.com/littleprinter/) or one of these (http://ekemp.en.alibaba.com/product/565669382-210430359/Programmable_POS_smart_card_reader_with_printer_POS_N8110_.html) or something similar to just generate and print out private key and address (maybe as qr- or other bar-code for easier scanning)

Anyone know of a cheap enough programmable printer device?

Antique ones might also work, but probably harder to code for them (HP-97 as an example here):
