10381  Other / Politics & Society / Mars One Foundation Accepting Bitcoin For Private Manned Mission to Mars on: January 10, 2014, 12:38:30 AM
Have some spare bitcoins you’d like to give away but don’t know how? The Mars One Foundation – the private operation hoping to launch a manned mission to mars (a human settlement) — is now accepting bitcoins using BitPay for a  number of perks on Indiegogo, a crowdsourcing platform.

Bitcoin contributions can earn the contributor anything from a mission backstage pass for the equivalent of $10 USD, all the way to being a Mars One benefactor and receiving a VIP tour for the equivalent of $25,000 USD.

But will the project even lift off? With 18 days remaining, the Mars One foundation needs to raise up to $400,000 on Indiegogo, and so far have accrued $143,197. Still, $400,000 seems like a tiny budget for an interplanetary mission — though Mars One says this funding is for the “first major step” of the mission, which entails a lander and satellite mission in four years.

10383  Other / Politics & Society / ObamaCare, Obama Support Hit Record Lows In New Poll on: January 09, 2014, 10:46:54 PM
One in five Democrats now opposes ObamaCare, a record high, according to the latest IBD/TIPP Poll. And more than one in six Democrats now say they want it repealed, another new high.

Overall, 55% of the public oppose the law, the highest since IBD/TIPP started asking this question in 2010. Just 37% support ObamaCare, matching a record low.

And while support for outright repeal of the law inched down in January, that was because it fell among Republicans and independents. Among Democrats, support for repeal jumped 4 points.

ObamaCare is also clearly driving down President Obama’s approval rating, which dropped to just 38% in January from 43% in November. Among Democrats, Obama’s approval has dropped 10 points since November.

Obama also has fallen to all-time lows in the IBD/TIPP Presidential Leadership Index. At 42.6, his support is lower than President George W. Bush’s in the wake of his administration’s poor handling of Hurricane Katrina.

10384  Other / Politics & Society / Some find health insurers have no record of them on: January 09, 2014, 10:12:57 PM
Insurance companies are still trying to sort out cases of so-called health insurance orphans, customers for whom the government has a record that they enrolled, but the insurer does not. They are worried the process will grow more cumbersome as they deal with the flood of new customers who signed up in December as enrollment deadlines neared.

The government says the problem is real but under control. Officials say the total number of problem cases they are trying to resolve with insurers currently stands at about 13,000. That includes orphan records. More than 1 million people have signed up through the federal insurance market that serves 36 states. Officials contend the error rate for new signups is close to zero.

Insurers, however, are less enthusiastic about the pace of the fixes. The companies also are seeing cases in which the government has assigned the same identification number to more than one person, as well as so-called “ghost” files in which the insurer has an enrollment record but the government does not.

But orphaned files — when the insurer has no record of enrollment — are particularly concerning because the companies have no automated way to identify the presumed policyholder. They say they have to manually compare the lists of enrollees the government sends them with their own records because the government never built an automated system that would do the work much faster.

Are they going to live on Mars or in some technical space house which is going to be placed on Mars ?
as far as i know life on Mars is only possible in sc-fi movies Wink

Based on what we know of technology right now, the first Martian colonists will not survive for long. Even though you could create perfect space housing bubbles, radiation levels is pretty high over there.
But this is the case for any crazy ideas no one believes in. Early adopters are always mocked. With bitcoin you may lose your fiat money, but with those folks, they are willing to make the ultimate bet.

As much as I am amused 200 000 people are "dying" to go to Mars with a one way ticket, I am also very respectful of their decision based on their own life. Ultimate Anarchism I would say.

10387  Other / Politics & Society / Plan to avert GW by cooling planet artificially 'could cause climate chaos' on: January 08, 2014, 04:20:32 PM
A controversial proposal to cool the planet artificially by injecting tiny reflective particles into the upper atmosphere which block out sunlight would cause droughts and climate chaos in the poorest countries of the world, a study has found.

One of the more serious plans to “geoengineer” the global climate would in effect create another climate catastrophe that would result in misery for millions of people, according to a computer model of the plan.

Some climate researchers have suggested that mimicking the cooling effects of volcanic eruptions with massive injections of sulphate particles into the atmosphere may be necessary in an emergency if global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels continue to rise unabated.

It is known that the sulphate particles produced by volcanoes, which are relatively quickly washed out of the atmosphere, can reduce incoming solar radiation significantly, and so cause average global temperatures to dip.

I doubt it.  I never had any illusions that Ron Paul would be a great president.  Everyone makes mistakes, particularly doing a job like that, but the AMA was designed to fail; they said so when it was passed.  The other "they" didn't want a working compromise, "they" wanted a full on single payer healthcare industry.  "They" wanted the complete destruction of the "evil" insurance industry, under the presumption that a government bureaucracy is actually less evil than a corporate bureaucracy.  There is no evidence to assume that a monopoly on critical service is likely to be better than what we had, and much evidence to suggest that it would be worse over time.  No matter how well intended, never forget that, eventually, those people that you might believe are not out for themselves will lose power over these kinds of bureaucracies, and you enemy will be in control of your health care.  There's a good chance that will occur right about the time of your life that you actually need such care.  The AMA does, provablely, permit the establishment of "death panels"; so even if the Democrats are too nice to do such a thing to your grandmother, do you trust that the Republicans are too nice to do that to you?

Yes, so "IF" Ronny was president, He would of been making mistakes, but you would be supportive about him right? If not, then every president is going to be making mistakes, its life.

Supportive, yes; but I would still advocate the correction of mistakes.  The AMA isn't a mistake, however, it's palying out better than they planned.

It is indeed.  I see that about 9 million people have gotten cover so far and your Democratic party is talking about Obamacare being a net positive for them.

However, I still think you will run up against the problem that the US gives patent monopoly holders way too much bargaining power.  The reason US medical costs are so high are not down to insurance vs. single payer as such but that patent holders are allowed to charge different people different prices for the same drug.  "Death panels" like the UK's NICE are not essential (I know you guys have no problem with paying more) but they are very useful.

In 1974, Time Magazine blamed the cold polar vortex on global cooling.

Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world.

Forty years later, Time Magazine blames the cold polar vortex on global warming

But not only does the cold spell not disprove climate change, it may well be that global warming could be making the occasional bout of extreme cold weather in the U.S. even more likely. Right now much of the U.S. is in the grip of a polar vortex, which is pretty much what it sounds like: a whirlwind of extremely cold, extremely dense air that forms near the poles. Usually the fast winds in the vortex—which can top 100 mph (161 k/h)—keep that cold air locked up in the Arctic. But when the winds weaken, the vortex can begin to wobble like a drunk on his fourth martini, and the Arctic air can escape and spill southward, bringing Arctic weather with it. In this case, nearly the entire polar vortex has tumbled southward, leading to record-breaking cold

10394  Other / Politics & Society / Walmart health plan is cheaper, offers more coverage than Obamacare on: January 08, 2014, 12:07:15 AM
New Obamacare health insurance enrollees may feel a pang of envy when they eye the coverage plans offered by Walmart to its employees.

For many years, the giant discount retailer has been the target of unions and liberal activists who have harshly criticized the company’s health care plans, calling them “notorious for failing to provide health benefits” and “substandard.”

But a Washington Examiner comparison of the two health insurance programs found that Walmart’s plan is more affordable and provides significantly better access to high-quality medical care than Obamacare.
Click here to see an infographic comparing Obamacare’s health insurance premiums to Walmart’s

Independent insurance agents affiliated with the National Association of Health Underwriters and health policy experts compared the two at the request of the Examiner.

Walmart furnished employee benefit information to the Examiner. Neither Obamacare advocate Families USA nor the United Food and Commercial Workers, which backs anti-Walmart campaigns, responded to Examiner requests for comment.

Walmart offers its employees two standard plans, a Health Reimbursement Account and an alternative it calls “HRA High” that costs more out of employees’ pockets but has lower deductibles. Blue Cross Blue Shield manages both plans nationally.

10395  Other / Politics & Society / Carmakers keep data on drivers' locations on: January 07, 2014, 10:45:36 PM
Washington — A government report finds that major automakers are keeping information about where drivers have been — collected from onboard navigation systems — for varying lengths of time. Owners of those cars can’t demand that the information be destroyed. And, says the U.S. senator requesting the investigation, that raises questions about driver privacy.

The Government Accountability Office in a report released Monday found major automakers have differing policies about how much data they collect and how long they keep it.

Automakers collect location data in order to provide drivers with real-time traffic information, to help find the nearest gas station or restaurant, and to provide emergency roadside assistance and stolen vehicle tracking. But, the report found, “If companies retained data, they did not allow consumers to request that their data be deleted, which is a recommended practice.”

The report reviewed practices of Detroit’s Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. It also looked at navigation system makers Garmin and TomTom and app developers Google Maps and Telenav. The report, which didn’t identify the specific policies of individual companies, found automakers had taken steps to protect privacy and were not selling personal data of owners, but said

10397  Other / Politics & Society / CLIMATE CHANGE GROUPS SEEK NEW LEADERSHIP AS GREEN MOVEMENT LOSES MOMENTUM on: January 07, 2014, 03:51:20 PM
It is unclear exactly why many climate change organizations are installing new executives, but it appears they are following the professional sports paradigm: When a team loses more than it wins, you can’t fire all the players, but you can fire the coach.

In the last decade the environmentalist have peddled harsh laws to install climate change strategies. However, many of these laws don’t pass, and new regulations fail to get traction. With global warming at a standstill for most of the last two decades and – much to Al Gore’s chagrin – plenty of ice still on the polar caps, more green groups are firing their CEO’s.
Next to go is Maggie Fox, president and CEO of the Al Gore-founded Climate Reality Project, who will be gone in the Spring. The group was previously called the Alliance for Climate Protection and was part of the unsuccessful environmental movement’s drive to enact cap-and-trade legislation in 2009-10.
Two other large U.S. environmental companies are giving the boot to their leaders. National Wildlife Federation President and CEO Larry Schweiger is leaving in May, and Natural Resources Defense Council President Frances Beinecke is also parting ways with her group in 2014.
Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch, defended the changing of the guard. "It happens in every profession," he said; "An older generation gives way to a new one. In this case, a new generation of leaders needs to step up." However, this logic doesn’t fully explain why Greenpeace USA is canning Executive Director Phil Radford who is only in his late 30s, a clear member of that younger generation.
