10421  Other / New forum software / Re: Can we "Like" a post? on: October 03, 2016, 05:57:56 AM
Lauda,
I see how one could abuse this system.  Sure, you can make a thousand QS alts and use them to "like" the heck out of a post, but to what end?  There is no benefit, no bonus for having many likes.  If someone wants to spend hours logging in and liking posts, let them.
Well, as an example newbies could get tricked into believing false information (since they're more gullible). I can see people spreading false information with self moderated threads where they've liked their post with a lot of alt accounts. Anyhow, I'm not trying to say that this is very dangerous though. I'm just saying that we need to be aware of (potentially harmful) cases of abuse.

Remember, this forum is supposed to compete with other software that already contains this feature.
Sure. I wouldn't mind some 'thank you' or 'karma-like' system implemented (as I've seen in other locations).
10422  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Unknown] Attack on the Network in Progress on: October 03, 2016, 05:32:39 AM
It'd be difficult to detect suspicious nodes as you'd have to use other nodes to do it and then something out to those other nodes to get them to block that IP?
Not necessarily. In this case, it was very reason to detect them because:
1) They used 3 connection slots per IP.
2) A lot of the nodes that suddenly appeared were from AWS.
3) They kept connecting and disconnecting.

So eventually, you could get a person that could hack the bitcoin network by blocking all of the IPs from one of the main nodes and significantly reduce the time it takes for a transaction to be added to the blockchain.
No, that's not what a 'hack'. There's no such thing as 'main nodes'; you may be talking about mining nodes?

Also, doesn't everything have a "limited connection".
That's not what I meant. Some nodes have a specified maximum number of connections that they're going to accept.

This topic has been moved to Trashcan.
Reason: Illegal.
10424  Economy / Reputation / Re: Defcon23 is an unstable individual who threatens people with personal info. on: October 03, 2016, 05:22:15 AM
No drug talk!  How did that evolve?
Apparently it seems to be a part of Freenode policy; I'm not sure and it doesn't matter. A channel operator has made a clear warning regarding something and that should be followed (which everyone clearly did, except defcon23).

Sounds like someone's unstable here, and I'm pretty sure it's not Lauda.  Haven't ruled myself out.  Defcon23 is looking like a prime suspect and I've got my eye on all of you.
I guess this is a new trend with them, just #BlameLauda. Apparently they threatened minifrij because of this comment (I think):
Quote
<Slck1>   <minifrij> defcon go and have a nap,

Anyone got some salt and melted butter for the p-corn?
You should have seen this happening live (them evading their ban with ridiculous usernames incl. "downspace", "Laura", "BG5", and those listed by minifrij). A ton of popcorn would have been eaten by you had you been there.

10425  Other / Meta / Re: Shouldn't non productive topics be moved from Bitcoin Discussion to Off-Topic? on: October 02, 2016, 08:40:59 PM
Bad idea. It would be easier for moderators to lock threads, rather than force people to lock them.
Correct. The best that an user can do is to send out PMs to the topic creators and ask them nicely to lock them to prevent more spam. Unfortunately, from my own experience this isn't always successful.

So obviously if we keep doing what we've always done we'll always get the same results. Isn't that the definition of insanity?!
No, because what we're mentioning here is not being done or is rarely done.

10426  Economy / Reputation / Re: Defcon23 is an unstable individual who threatens people with personal info. on: October 02, 2016, 07:48:03 PM
2: this problem happened cause i was banned from IRC  in following to a starnge attitude about Lauda, who's coming into the Chat , and asking about  drugs into the channel  ( RITALIN).
No, that's a outright lie and not the reason for which you were banned. Some of us were discussing Ritalin in a peaceful manner, prior to us knowing that it was against Freenode policy. After everyone was explicitly warned about this from one of the channel operators the topic was ceased, but you ignored the warnings and ended up doing several *weird* things. You were banned for the reasons listed by Mitchell in that image (explicitly that horrible comment and the threats to minifrij and/or others).

- and , YOU ( minifridj) , come into the conversation who not concerned you..
You did the exact same thing.

Watching how this unfolds.

10428  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [RAFFLE] - Cat's Mysterious 32 Spot Raffle on: October 02, 2016, 02:04:49 PM
I will try my luck in this, save me a random spot.
I've assigned and reserved 'b' in the [0-7] lot. Thank you for participating.

Will update will payment in a day or 2, PM me if i haven't paid when almost due to start and i will fix that up.
It's not an issue. The raffle isn't likely going to get completely filled just yet, so you can either pay now and forget about it, or I'll notify people when payment is due (although the first option speeds up things).
10429  Other / Meta / Re: Shouldn't non productive topics be moved from Bitcoin Discussion to Off-Topic? on: October 02, 2016, 01:39:55 PM
Maybe we should have some spam fighters? Like, fight fire with fire? So whoever created the topic we just have 100 people send them 5-10PMs a day saying "lock your useless thread *link* or the spam to your inbox will continue.
Fighting spam by producing PM spam is actually a very horrible way of trying to accomplish this. Some of those users also may not want to lock their threads for the obvious reasons (they are either spamming themselves or facilitating spam).

You can use this website for any conversions between smaller and bigger units. That should solve your confusion. Example:

10431  Other / Meta / Re: Shouldn't non productive topics be moved from Bitcoin Discussion to Off-Topic? on: October 02, 2016, 08:37:23 AM
I don't think so. Those topics are discussing Bitcoin, so they have their place here. It has now the same function as the new "Gambling discussion" section.
No, they are not discussing Bitcoin dircetly. They are discussing useless general stuff that isn't Bitcoin specific (and/or personal experiences), which could also be answered properly within the first page. Such posts are extremely useless in most cases and just end up wasting your time reading through them. They should be moved into Off-Topic at least, or optimally locked and forbidden.

10433  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Unknown] Attack on the Network in Progress on: October 02, 2016, 07:19:52 AM
perhaps an automated search to find weak (old) client of bitcoin network that they mine, too ... to steal ?
No, that doesn't work since it affects also new nodes and up to date nodes like my own. What are "weak clients"?

If it was a test on the node strengths, they would've prewarned the people operating the nodes in tat region in order to tell them that there may be problems.
In an optimal scenario, yes. However, if the final intent is malicious then I doubt that they'd warn someone.

It is unusual that a cryptocurrency node may be affected in this way (as in it being DoSed).
From what I could gather, currently they could only negatively affect nodes with a limited amount of connection.

I think that any normal activity wouldn't do this to a node as traffic would surely be redirected once the ports are full?
No, this is certainly not normal activity especially if you look at the number of nodes and their IPs. I guess implementing a 'activity' detection policy that flags nodes as suspicious wouldn't be a bad idea (would help detect some of these).
10434  Other / New forum software / Re: Can we "Like" a post? on: October 02, 2016, 07:07:22 AM
yes it isn't really necessary but it remains a good idea and i don't see a harm to include it
I've already mentioned potential 'harmful' cases:

I think that it would aid to help spread misinformation, among other (bad) things, as they could easily up-vote nonsense posted by their other accounts..

sometimes i refrain myself from posting an appreciation to a post since it will be considered as a spam, i would show support to that member but i can't...
That is correct. 'Thank you' posts are not allowed as they bring nothing to the discussion. However, you could thank a user as part of your post (e.g. write something relevant and constructive prior or after thanking them).
10435  Other / Meta / Re: Shouldn't non productive topics be moved from Bitcoin Discussion to Off-Topic? on: October 02, 2016, 12:02:59 AM
I've noticed that if a new topic like this comes up from a newbie it gets neuked almost instantly but the good old crappy 'what would you do if I gave you 10btc' and useless shit is still plastered all over. Let's see what we have on the front page today shall we...
Well, not exactly 'nuked', but usually they get marked as insubstantial and trashed/deleted on sight.

"Who uses bitcoin?" everyone on this forum.. NEXT
"What are you doing with bitcoin" Exactly what I'm doing with fiat... NEXT!
-snip-
Yes, these threads can usually be filled with generic answers and as such become worthless after a fair amount of replies. Afterwards they just get filled with rehashed replies.

Is it only Theymos, Cyrus or Hilariousandco that can do anything about it?
As far as that particular section is concerned, yes.
10436  Other / Meta / Re: Shouldn't non productive topics be moved from Bitcoin Discussion to Off-Topic? on: October 01, 2016, 11:05:57 PM
Actually that's nice suggestion, i'll move some of my started threads to off-topics Smiley
Just lock your own thread.

I see that many topics in beginners section were locked. Good step by moderators.
Yes, we cracked down on that section and hopefully we will be able to keep it that way.

I noticed my thread on your list and in fairness it could probably do with locking and deleting?
Well, if you got *some* useful information out of it, you can always just move and/or lock it.

Also, Lauda or anyone on this forum, if you find another thread of mine that appears to be useless in its position or is filled with spam, I'm happy to take a PM and move it to a more appropriate location (or to lock and move it to archive).
Thank you for being willing to participate in this (I can't say the same for some members).

- money industry that it build money cash machine ... and include Bitcoin light client.
Why would they need so many light clients, hosted at the same place, constantly connecting and disconnecting?

- hedge fund research and developpement to move a high amount of coin to take many order in all exchange.
Not sure why they'd need some many light clients for what you're describing (not that I fully understand what you're trying to say).

not an attack after all ... probable test to evaluate the power of all (full) nodes to do a job with plenty of light (and useless ?) client.
This may very well be possible, although the agenda still may be malicious (end game). I do wonder why they need to do it for this long though.
10439  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Unknown] Attack on the Network in Progress on: October 01, 2016, 08:29:21 PM
what is the purpose of this?
cannot understand the gain of the "attackers"
The first guess is spying, although what they're attempting to do exactly is still unknown. I haven't seen any information regarding it.

testing something or trying to get as many nodes down as possible and move the price up (or down)
This doesn't crash nodes. All this does (aside from the 'unknown attack' part) is fill up a node's connection slots (this is a negative effect in case they have a limited amount specified in their configuration).

it would cost money to do what they are doing,so there MUST be some return or at least a reason
Hosting 40 AWS SPV nodes doesn't cost a lot of money AFAIK.
10440  Other / Archival / Re: . on: October 01, 2016, 07:35:17 PM
1 ticket for Lauda (someone had to pick pussyfart zephy already, yes, I'm pointing at you Mantis).
I accept this generous act of evil, that makes me very warm and fuzzy inside.

I don't take No for an answer, but you know that already.
Let's not get into 'how I know this already' in public.
