10421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What's the problem with getting Bitcoin compliant with GAAP??? on: September 06, 2012, 06:17:35 PM
Oooh...the hints are falling from the sky as things start to become clear.

It is in relation to this:

10422  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: why aren't we, the community, regularly paying the lead developers of bitcoin? on: September 06, 2012, 06:04:27 PM
Who is "we" and what are the requirements to be part of "the community"?
10423  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: September 06, 2012, 04:46:28 PM
Figured it out:
"Hey, I've got this fantastic idea!"

"Really!  Tell me all about it!"

"We're going to buy one of the islands of Greece and turn it into a libertarian country and use Bitcoin as the currency!"

"Uhh... did you talk to a lawyer about that? That might be illegal."

"Uhh... really? no."

"And where will you get the money to do it?"

"Uhhh... haven't figured that out yet."

"And if I want to participate, what should I do?"

"Uhh... I dunno, we don't really have a process for that yet..."

Idk, maybe my opinion will change after the announcement and it will be obvious why it had to be kept secret.

"Hey, I've got this fantastic idea!"

"Really!  Tell me all about it!"

"We're going to blah blah blah."

"Uhh... did you talk to a lawyer about that? That might be illegal."

"Uhh... really? no."

"And where will you get the money to do it?"

"Uhhh... haven't figured that out yet."

"And if I want to participate, what should I do?"

"Uhh... I dunno, we don't really have a process for that yet..."

I made the mistake of asking a reporter when her deadline was, because if it was far enough away I could tell her about the neat idea. I should have kept my mouth shut or sworn her to secrecy.

Announcing a half-baked idea is counterproductive; you'll just get a gazillion questions that you can't answer, or, even worse, people will assume they know the answers and then be disappointed when it turns out the idea they thought they heard you describe isn't the same idea they thought they heard.

Announcing a fully-baked idea and then modifying it based on what everybody thinks and how it works out in practice is the right way to do things, in my humble opinion.

The wording from the bottom:

However, all these considerations did not deter me from the path of duty; the moment I understood the will of my Heavenly Father, I felt a determination to go at all hazards, believing that He would support me by His almighty power, and endow me with every qualification that I needed.” (In Orson F. Whitney, Life of Heber C. Kimball, 3d ed., Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1967, pp. 103–4.)

I wonder if that's a news typo or is verbatim...?

10426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why are bitcoin exchange operators so inept? on: September 05, 2012, 08:02:27 PM
Best thing for these folks (or anyone for that matter) to do is keep your Bitcoins safe by sending them to my wallet. Then just send me an e-mail letting me know how much was deposited for safe keeping.

My wallet is secure. Honest.

Address in the sig. Better safe than sorry!
10427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll - When did you get involved into bitcoin? on: September 05, 2012, 08:00:16 PM
I jumped in July of 2011 as it was coming down from $17.

I had played around with it and joined the board about a year earlier. Tried to run the mining software on my laptop and it crashed so I stopped trying.

my grandma (who thinks firefox is "the google", and "internets" her emails to me) would be able to use.

My mom used to talk about people sending a "Tex Mex".
10431  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Love this site? Hate adverts? Read this on: September 05, 2012, 03:02:07 PM
The adverts you show should ask people to donate so that they do not need to see advertisements.

Make the text blink in and out so that they see it and donate.
10432  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Handle a Wasp and you will not get stung! Practice Safe Bitcoin on: September 04, 2012, 07:30:18 PM
We have one of those Wasp scanners here at work for inventory management.

The gal that does all of that was pretty excited to see the scanner come in. Apparently it does a lot.
10433  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: September 04, 2012, 04:42:49 PM
Can we at least have the date of the announcement?

The announcement will be made some time between September 4th and September 30th.

10435  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Survey: gauging community opinion regarding criminal transactions on: September 04, 2012, 12:28:46 AM
I have not seen Bitcoin used for any criminal acts such as taxation and the initiation of force.

That currency lies in government power.

10437  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin would make payroll awesome on: September 01, 2012, 12:02:18 AM
I was thinking about this. This would be the last step of where I would use a bank once BitInstant has debit card and billpay.

I would just have my direct deposit go straight to a bill account and a spending account.

I would even write up some budgetting software for my wallet so that my family spending could be trickled out throughout the month (keeping the wife from spending all of the paycheck on a shopping spree). I tried to do it once where I sent so much money to a checking account every day but the bank stopped it because of too many transfers in one month, plus if more was spent than was in the account the bank would charge a fee and let the spending go through.

If you are using plastic, you can stop automatic overdraft rapes.  When the law changed a few years ago, all of my credit card companies were hysterically begging me to opt in to overcharge protection so that they could charge me $35+ if I ever went over limit.  I declined them all, and now if a charge would ever accidentally take me over my limit, it is merely declined, for free.  It's happened a few times when I wasn't paying attention.  I just put away the card that pays 2% cash back and have them redo the charge on the card that I rarely use because it only pays back 1%.

Good to know. I have gone to my banker several times to have them override an overdraft fee. Usually it is their fault for holding up my money for a deposit too large.

They say the same thing every time...we let it go through because 'what if it was your mortgage'.
10438  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: The saddest and funniest thing about Bitcoin is... on: August 31, 2012, 11:58:58 PM
At $100 it just means a different number in the Bitcoin wallet than when a previous purchase went through. Bought and spent in the same manner.
