this is a weed that has killed a lot of people when addicted
No, it hasn't. One ref to that fact is here.
For most people cannabis is NOT addictive beyond being something they like to use. Addiction means there are physical withdrawal symptoms when someone stops using the substances. Cannabis has zero effects like that. No one has EVER died from using cannabis because you simply cannot overdose. Even eating a lot of hash cookies will only put you to sleep for several hours.

Now, can someone kill themselves by doing something stupid while under the influence? Sure. So don't drive, don't operate heavy machinery, don't juggle chainsaws, etc. while you are high...
1062  Other / Off-topic / Re: Electric car - do you like it? on: October 05, 2021, 01:32:19 PM
The one problem I have with all electric vehicles is their limited range or more specifically, how long it takes to recharge them. I'm a field service engineer and that means traveling to customers sites. For time and economy reasons, if they are less than 500-750 miles away I usually drive there vs flying because when flying, going through the airports adds around 2 hrs to the stated flight times so travel time (which is billed to the customer) is about the same.

Then there is vacations. My GF and I routinely travel all over the state and will typically put several hundred miles on my Jeep each day including a fair bit off-road. In both cases the 1/2hr to several hours it takes to recharge makes any EV a no-go for us. At least with hybrid vehicles you still have an ICE to keep you charged along with a short time to refuel when needed.

Unless you have some other way to jet coolant through the fins, you need the fans.
Fans are useless when immersed in a fluid and will actually impede pumped flow... Considering the OP has not said *what* kind of fluid they are using (I hope to god it's not mineral oil) as long as the fluid is rather thin it's quite possible that positioning the miners vertically would give enough flow through them using convection alone with pumping only needed to circulate the fluid to the heat exchanger.
1064  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New Avalon 1246 miner does not allow me to change mining pool on: October 05, 2021, 12:59:08 PM
Can you please detail me on how to replace the firmware? I would be very grateful if anyone could provide me with instructions on how to do this.
You'll have to get a link to the A12 firmware from Canaan. Their repo here has firmware for all their other miners but not the A12...

Question is, did that scamming reseller also lock out reflashing the miner... Normally you just click on "upgrade' in the GUI, point to where the .AUP file is and run it.
1065  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Custom firmware for avalon? on: October 05, 2021, 12:44:33 PM
Incorrect. The Avalon's are highly tweakable. Ref their privileged API user manual
eh not really we got them to open their api a few years ago and found they are really lacking a lot of useful stuff but it's a good start.
Bull. From day-1 the Avalons have always been open with full source code available on their git. As a matter of fact, when Canaan introduced the Avalons Kano wrote their API.

Now their most recent miners starting with the A10, ja there are less things to tweak and Canaan made it a little harder to find what tweaks you can do but it is still open. Now, that's not to say that the tweaking process can't be improved, after all lots of folks just don't get using a CLI however, ain't no way in hell would I pay for a GUI-based version much less one that given your prior history would also be closed source.
1066  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New Avalon 1246 miner does not allow me to change mining pool on: October 05, 2021, 12:40:13 AM
There is no save button for me to click on. The miner is brand new, just got it today. I just emailed the support email on their website. Thanks for the response.
I was just going to ask: Who did you buy it from? Direct from Canaan or one of their authorized resellers such as blokforge.com and have you contacted them? Canaan does not ship miners that are locked so I suspect the reseller did it...

We'll see what your seller does. (and who are they?)

1069  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Ebang Ebit E10 burned every cables and pin sockets on: October 04, 2021, 05:48:28 PM
Several causes for this: Main one is that the PCIe power connectors were worn out. This can apply to both the ones on PSU cables as well as those on the hash boards. In fact, given that PSU's are often used by the original owners to power several generations of hardware, IMO the problem most likely started with the plugs on the PSU cables. Even the best connectors have pins that are only rated for a mere 25 plug/unplug cycles and odds are those have been cycled a lot more than that.

Once plating is worn off the connections become very warm and things quickly avalanche down hill from there. Reason the data cables fried is because after you lost the return paths from the hash board plugs the next in line to (try) to carry the high current were the data cable returns.

In short - just 1 more reason to be very wary when buying used hardware...

The question is.... Why has this been swept under the carpet for months?
It  wasn't. They notified folks whose accounts were compromised and dealt with it. The only new thing is that Reuters decided to (again) make it 'news'. Must be a slow week for them?
1071  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pandora papers <== They said Bitcoin was used to avoid taxes! Think again on: October 04, 2021, 03:49:29 PM
The papers are a big yawn. Most if not all of the people 'called out' have made NO attempts to hide what they are doing. They are just using the common and fully legal practice of shielding income by using off-shore investments. Their respective governments know about it and for the most part do not care.
1072  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Will miners continue to mine bitcoin after all the coins are mined ? on: October 04, 2021, 03:43:21 PM

edit edit: and has been moved back here again....  Huh
Plus - there is already the exact same Topic there https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5363338.0  I suggest you peruse it and lock or delete this one...
As for fees -- there is no calculating involved. Fees only depend on what folks are willing to pay.

1074  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Some reboot with my Avalon 1246 on: October 04, 2021, 02:35:13 PM
It seems that this miner doesn't support ASICboost try to use a normal pool or change or pool to ViaBTC. ....
Starting with the A9xx series all Avalons fully support ASICboost although yes, *some* pools require you to point them at their AB-specific addresses. Thing is, if a pool is setup properly it should make no difference. As part of setting up the stratum connection the pool should ask if the miner can do AB and if the miner replies 'yes', that is how it will work.

As for craphash - they require the #xnsub code and AFAIK the Avalons (rightly so) do NOT support that as #xnsub is a huge security hole. NH uses #xnsub to seamlessly switch coins w/o having the miner reboot to do it. Thing is, that code allows running many other things as well with the miner never letting you know what it is doing.

Ja. That's why when dealing with general statements I've learned to use the words 'folks', 'people, 'a person' or even 'one' etc instead of 'you' as it hopefully takes possible reference to a specific individual out of the picture.
1077  Other / Meta / Re: Are we now allowing obviously false information to be posted as truth? on: October 01, 2021, 03:33:00 PM
I'm going to report the post and see.

Let us know how that goes. I've reported some of BADecker's far more shitty posts without success so I'm not wasting my time on this. He seems to have solid immunity (no pun intended) here.
Don't you know that he (and B1tUnl0ck3r) are immune because they are one of the Inbred Reptilian Overlords that secretly rule over Humanity?  Wink

Pool operator posting to the thread, not that I have seen for a long while, mainly get Braiins representatives posting as far as I can tell now.
As an FYI, the person known as Slush and founder of the pool sold it to the Braiins group in 2013. AFAIK Slush (the person) has not had anything to do with the pool for many years now. The Braiins Story site covers their history

They should still be fine. After all these years of being a very good company I can't see them kicking their reputation to the curb. My guess is that the kerfuffle in China over all aspects of the crypto business has made delivery dates a real cluster F. Toss in Autumn festivals and shipping problems to really screw things even more.

The last few orders I did with them were also 'in-stock' though they shipped from HK so I take it in-stock does not mean 'in the BF warehouse' but rather the mfgr has them ready to ship.
