1081  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to destroy Bitcoin with a 10% attack: Roadmap for a Central Bank Takeover on: November 29, 2016, 07:54:43 PM
10% control leaves 90% of the blocks being mines left to be filled with higher fee transactions. I doubt this would make much of a difference. It would just reflect in 10% less transactions being processed.

Well 10% less of those with fees. If the attacker here is only mining transactions without fee there is no reliable way to secure a spot in these blocks. Maybe they use priority. Whatever they do, it would reduce the available space in blocks for those paying a fee. If demand stays the same, this attack would increase the price of fees needed to secure a spot in the 9/10 blocks left.

Have you ever heard about the relationship between supply and demand?

Lets be clear:

Miners are selling blockspace

Users are buying blockspace

So let us talk a little bit about housing instead..

What do you think would happen if the government gave everybodya few random people a house for free every 10th year?

FTFY.

What do you think would happen to the prices of real estate?

Houses are a bad metaphor as their most valuable property tends to be the land they stand on.

Do you think it will be easy to sell your house during the 9 years in between?

Do you think people will be willing to pay good money for your house?

Lets try it away and assume the location is not important for some reason and houses could be easily interchanged. The number of houses that are given away is limited. The places the free houses are build on are removed from the land and house building markets. Less places to build houses on, but the still the same amount of people that need a place to live. Buy a house now or hope for a lucky chance in 9 years?

You seem to forget that blocks are limited in size (everyone gets a house) and that without a fee you have no way to know for sure your transaction will be confirmed. I have no doubt that this attack would significantly increase the amount of free transactions, but I doubt it would have a meaningful impact on the other transactions. After all all the attackers can offer is a lucky chance. People that want to do business can not rely on lucky chances.
1082  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to sign a message?! on: November 29, 2016, 07:40:44 PM
I was looking for this before because of i do not know what is the good format to sign a message that is why i made a format with my own like this

Sign Message:
Address:
Signature:

But in some deals they are still accepting it..
Now i added it to my bookmarks so that i can give new sign message with proper format.. thanks

Any format that is clear is fine. E.g. yours would be difficult for multiple lines, but there are others that work well.
1083  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: November 29, 2016, 07:03:21 PM
Can a normal GPU even fit in a laptop?
Nope. (If you ask questions like this, I recommend to buy a ready-made system.)
-snip-

Not for 250 USD, but its possible to fit desktop grade GPUs in a laptop. E.g. -> https://www.sagernotebook.com/Notebook-NP9873-S.html

Im not an alt of Engg.Chakks. Im requesting Shorena to review my case as I received a negative trust.

I bought this account since July 23, 2015 and Im the new owner of this account since then. It's already more than a year Im on the possession of this account. I think this was Member rank back then when I bought this. This is my signed message back last July 23, 2015 to prove that I bought the account.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.msg11952694#msg11952694

I also posted the same signed message from our local thread.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=27736.msg11952931#msg11952931

And by reviewing the account after I got it, I see the original owner was Indonesian and you can see in my post history I made a lots of post in our local thread which is not Indonesian after I bought it.

Here is the signed message from the address posted on the link I given above:
Code:

I will patiently wait for the progress of my case. Just tell me what do I need to prove that Im no longer connected to that scammer as this is the first time I will experience a trial.

Rating removed, scam[1] was after the address was staked (2 days).

Looks sold and resold to me. The first password change might also be preparation to sell or securiting the account after an attack. Impossible to tell.

1086  Other / Meta / Re: did my post get deleted a few hours ago? on: November 29, 2016, 09:02:16 AM
Might have appeared spam, but I dont think so... it was like this:

I am new to btc. Just now learning.I have a wallet and have been studying

Is it cool to ask someone here to send me 10 cents worth BTC. I will send it back. What are fees for that? If its like several dollars, then nevermind.

Is it safe to show a "receive address" on a forum like this?

Any constructive comments are welcome.

It was probably marked as begging which is against the rules.

All other questions are probably fine in beginners and help.

Quick answers:

- how high a good fee is, is not a simple answer, but usually its a few cents. The fee depends on the size in bytes of the transaction, not on the amount of bitcoin you are transfereing
- posting bitcoin address is safe, anywhere.

Your false negative trust would not hurt me. But, I'm upset with the member's loss and I sent PM to him the moment I got my account back. Still waiting for him to respond though.

Its an offer, not a tread. It can be neutral if you want, but in my expierence those are seldomly read.
1088  Other / Meta / Re: My account has been hacked :( on: November 29, 2016, 08:24:25 AM
Also contact me when you get your account back and I will remove feedback.  I have not heard nothing from you since day I flagged your account.  Good luck.

Want to explain that nonsense rating or shall we assume you are just trolling?

Where does the "bitcoin address", that is not formatted as bitcoin addresses commonly are, come from?

This account has been tagged and we will need to see a signed message from the account holder from this BTC address: RQCPNWn4fKZGjBsA7RnbnusYGdLjBVk85k
before the account has the red tags removed.

As you can see I really don't know too much about computers haha. If you say a tablet won't work then I'll just assume that's right. I'm just looking to have a chance at creating some very harder to find addresses over a long period of time (most likely) and not constantly run it. So maybe look for an 8 or 9 character address an hour a day or something.
-snip-

...or you could hire someone with a decent GPU in a desktop system. 8 symbols (without exact case) is relativly quick to find (over night most likely) for me. Given the current electricity and bitcoin price I could e.g. do 1chrischr for 0.0037.
1090  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin battle against multinational companies on: November 29, 2016, 07:00:37 AM
We know that the distribution of hashing power is highly unbalanced. If the big giants like Intel, Google, nVidia, IBM all collide together to mine Bitcoins will they out power the rest of the Bitcoin community?

It is believed[1] that the bitcoin network is the most powerful in the world when it comes to calculating sha256d hashes. Due to the efficiency of ASICs the companies you mentioned have no chance to compete. Their equipment is designed for generic (CPU) or somewhat specialized calcualtions (GPU). ASICs are way more energy efficient. Even if their calculation power in total should be greater, they could not mine with profit.

Doesn't matter because only 5 million bitcoin is left to mine and if they collide and form another big giant then they might mine the rest of the bitcoin within 40 years or less. If they really come into action then we might v have yo pay less transaction fees.

Thats not how bitcoin works. You cant just increase the calculation power and mine the remaining bitcoins faster.

Doesn't matter because only 5 million bitcoin is left to mine and if they collide and form another big giant then they might mine the rest of the bitcoin within 40 years or less. If they really come into action then we might v have yo pay less transaction fees.

Indeed even an overpowering of the current combined hashpower would mean little in terms of reward as they couldn't possibly get enough of that 5 mil btc left to make money.

If the effort were altruistic though then as you say we might look at lowering fees and rising value of btc. But we can forget any consolidation of hadhpower other than for profit.

No, but an attacker with the majority of hashpower can censor the network and only confirm transaction they deem fit.

Who would you say qualifies as independent?
Someone that we can trust and is active on the forum (especially in meta) like yourself, there are many users on the forum to pick from

The lists are pretty long to check them all, but if you send me a few picked at random I will take a look at the accounts, write my opinion about their posts and what I think they could improve.
1093  Other / Meta / Re: My account got hacked on: November 28, 2016, 07:52:59 PM

There is no rocket science behind "running" the account but all I'm trying to say is that no one should deal with me without using escrow plus verifying my identity on Keybase.io.

Should I leave this as a permanent negative rating on your account to make sure for the future? (serious question)

I don't want to get blamed like this again.

I understand you, but did you talk to the person that got scammed? Usually they accept at least part of the blame and might be willing to share the loss evenly. Would that be something you can agree on? Do you accept at least a partial responsibility?
1094  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: San Francisco Metro System Hacked with Ransomware [Paid $70,000 in Bitcoin] on: November 28, 2016, 03:31:38 PM
Why would you pay the $70,000? Morons, what if they are lying and you are still hacked after paying?

Ransomware make it usually pretty obvious that the system is compromised. Like with encrypting all the data and showing you a big flashy prompt that you need to pay XY BTC to get the decryption key.
1095  Other / Meta / Re: [SMAS] Signature Managers against Spam (light version) on: November 28, 2016, 03:30:03 PM
Who said this had to be done over a short period of time? if you stretch the process over a few weeks, most people wont realize
Right. What's to prevent from independent reviewers from being bribed? What's to prevent them from colluding with us? Nothing. The best that can be done is to keep everything as transparent and as objective as possible.

Unless you have a good solution, voicing such speculative concerns doesn't really help. I'm sure that the participating members are aware of potential problems. You can always contact us via PM.
So dont voice my concerns then? There isnt a fool proof solution for this problem but having somebody independent will go a long way, read up on the division of power and corruption and you will see where im coming from

Who would you say qualifies as independent?

Good, but you still need to ask yourself how someone could have gotten it.

Thanks for your input. But, I'm not going to give in to any wrong traditions established at this forum. Lets consider that I send 1.5BTC to the victim now. Since, I can't stay online 24x7 to check if my account is hacked or not. If my bitcointalk account is hacked again tonight and another stupid trader sends 5BTC without checking my profile, do I have to pay him back too?

How bad is your password that you have to fear its hacked again right away? Do you reuse it on other sites? Registered somewhere bitcoin related recently with the same password?

There is no security measure at this crappy forum to prevent account compromise. There should be at least two-factor authentication. Until the forum software is improved to provide account protection, this should be responsibility of the buyer to verify identity and use escrow.

Yes, buyer beware. The forum wasnt hacked though, your account was. If your password is '123456' or you reuse it everywhere it does not matter how good or bad the security of the fourm is.

A thing or two here to be learned - should the seclog include email changes as well so that we can document the exact time an account is compromised, if the account hacker chooses not to change the password?

Restoring the account via e-mail will result in a lock ban until the owner can verify themselves.
1100  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: send Donation adress instead of mine on: November 27, 2016, 10:37:49 PM
So, you have a friend that was going to send you $4400.00 of BTC?  Hell of a friend.  Then you looked in the console of Electrum and gave your "friend" the donation address for the Electrum server as yours?  You have got to realize how that sounds, right?

Post the Transaction here for us to help verify it with you.  If true you can contact the server sponsor.  BTC transactions are irreversible, but the receiver of the funds can send them back.

Posting a transaction ID proves nothing.
