yeah.

it will take a bit of time for your computer to download the blockchain, but your coin and transactions are stored there, not on your computer.

I am, at least on a global scale.

Can you expound on this point? What does "global scale" defense look like? Do we have that today?

Obviously, some rich fuck can afford some executive security and get driven around in a bulletproof escalade, but that isn't exactly the status quo, is it...

Egypt is in the midst of a crime wave.  I think you need examples from the real world.

People are just so used to relying on the state for such things that it takes longer than a short period of chaos for people to self organize.

Are you claiming that it is not possible to provide private defense of persons and property?

Also, awesome to know that the only thing keeping you descent in life is the threat of police authority.

The fact that many people express the sentiment that the only thing keeping them from stealing, raping, and pillaging is the threat of police force (or for many Christians who claim God is the source of all morality that only the threat of hell) is indeed a troubling idea

I believe that concept was first brought up by BitterTea. I intended to say that a virtual environment is no basis for comparison to the real world as it lacks depth and consequences. People will not behave in a manner natural to a society because it lacks the REAL societal implications. Your libertarian second life is just another unmoderated forum -in a pretty dress- that will eventually draw the dregs of society.

o nos, i got negatives xp

Hmmmm... How about them apples?

Indeed. The plot has thickened...

The revolution will be medicated.

Mmmmm... Soma....

You're a fan? That stuff leaves me hung over and groggy for days.
1147  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Web"steading on: October 21, 2011, 12:22:04 AM
raping and pillaging and scamming as there are no implications. I would never consider such behavior in the real world, as it is not some imaginary libertopia.

Self governance doesn't work. Look at somalia or any other warlord controlled nation.

*facepalm*

So, what is the reason you "would never consider such behavior"? Do you forego rape and pillage because the government forces you to? Or perhaps it's that you think yourself superior in your lack of desire to do so, when in fact most people feel the same way. Those "rape and pillage" types, guess what they're attracted to - power. The same centralized power you say we need in order to protect us from rape and pillage.

Dude, I don't know what you are going on about. I am saying that overall, behavior on the internet is fundamentally different than that in real life and as such, this 'experiment' has no context.

To address your rant, would you rather have your neighborhood gangs squabbling over who you pay your taxes to while your children are gunned down in the fray, or would you rather just pay the man and go about your day?

1148  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The money is not disappearing on: October 21, 2011, 12:14:38 AM
People holding thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousand bitcoins, can definitely make the price go up. Until they found their 1000% profit is enough and start selling, and the price starts dropping. I guess that is what happened by the end of July, accompanied by the mtgox password leak, mybitcoin going down and losing coins, and that polish exchange accidently deleting 17k BTC.

mybitcoin skipped town with everyone's holdings and those polish 'lost' coins were more than likely stolen.
1149  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Web"steading on: October 20, 2011, 11:03:37 PM
I don't get it. Who would use such a frivolous piece of internet-waste?

It will not be an experiment in anything, because it is not real life. I would have no qualms about getting on your bitlife servers and raping and pillaging and scamming as there are no implications. I would never consider such behavior in the real world, as it is not some imaginary libertopia.

Self governance doesn't work. Look at somalia or any other warlord controlled nation.

1151  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is this video of cattle mutilation proof of aliens? on: October 20, 2011, 08:44:55 PM
The moment I gain the ability to travel large distances across space, I'm going to find an alien race and cut up their livestock to dick around with them instead of opening lines of communication and learn about them.

What if the act you consider "opening lines of communication" ends up being perceived by them as "cut up their livestock to dick around with them"?

I never thought of that.

Do the mutilations of the cattle all look similar and like they might be the alien version of "Greetings"?

Or, maybe, those aliens have their own version of SA and this is the way members have to pay their dues.

Better yet, the goons have new members go to Earth, snatch up a cow, drink its blood, return the cow, and making sure they're not seen. Obviously, by the 1983 video, this alien failed to become a member and...(insert humorous ending here).

(If inserting a humorous ending, insert a humorous image here.)

I think satirizing yourself may be a ban-able offense here.

Get out.

Hear hear. I'm not changing the US by sitting on a street. Moving to Korea had a bigger impact thsn I could ever make by being a sociopath hippie since I've dropped $300k into business here and not the US.

I'm changing America by moving to Korea. Also, those people who actually care enough to try and do anything they can, no matter how seemingly futile? They're the real sociopaths.
More people need to set themselves on fire for it to work. Some rioting and looting works. So do assassinations on a grand scale and all out civil war. You guys are pussies and an embarrassment to our founding fathers.

Matt, you've been killing it lately. Bravissimo!

No you're not, you are fleeing America to one of its sock puppet states.

Thank you sir!

seems like botnets to me.

No way. That would be a clownishly gigantic botnet, and with btc at $2, there are tasks that are a hell of a lot more lucrative for the operator to take on.
1156  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: October 19, 2011, 11:14:36 PM
I think it's rather ironic that people are discussing the benefits of being able to issue a chargeback against a merchant, on a bitcoin forum.  One of bitcoin's much touted features is the impossibility of chargebacks from customers who have been ripped off.

Imagine if Butterfly Labs required payment in bitcoins.  No one would ever touch it.

IF I thought they were legit I would .... with escrow.

Personally I am so convinced that it is scam that I don't find chargeback reassuring.  Trust me it isn't foolproof.

Company says 60 days ETA for shipping.  They collect bunch of orders, collect the money (which clears from paypal within 7 days), close bank account shutdown website.  60 days later people try to chargeback and Paypal shows you the fine print where the 45 day window has elapsed.

So you then dispute the charge with your credit card company or your bank, whichever your paypal transaction drew from. Their limits are much longer, on the order of 180 days if not more. This is why tradehill/dwolla was getting screwed, and why no one accepts credit cards for btc.

So when they transfer their your their money out of their paypal account, where will the money for the chargeback come from? Excuse my ignorance, but I haven't used paypal for quite a few years.

Paypal will give them a negative balance and sue them for it.

If this turns out legit. Ill order 20

Baller.

I've tried some additional fixes, so please let me know if yall notice continued issues after this post.

I'm sorry about not being around much or responding to emails.  I've been having a lot of personal issues which has caused this lack of attention to the pool.  I will try and remedy soon.

BurningToad, I hope your personal issues aren't serious. When you finish your personal issues and pool issues, come to Barcelona. There will be some beers waiting you Wink

Thanks.

I dont know about BT but ill take your offer up haha Wink

Servers are stable now, Stales went upto 2% last night and iffy this morning but been good for 8+ hours.

@burningtoad - employ an admin maybe, sure someone would give a little time Wink

Up your donation so he can afford an admin...

I doubt the server is even paying for itself right now, even with the uptick in hashrate over the past couple months. When the weighted average was above 1% the other day, only about a dozen other people besides me were still bolded on the lists. That's not many.

I wish I knew how to help beyond just donating.

BT, hope your shit works out.

Anyways, the losses of 9/11 could of been prevented if the government acted on previous information. The government knew about the attacks before they happened! This could of all been avoided.

And now you sweep away the guilt of the terrorists who murdered thousands and put the blame on Americans, the victims of the attack.

Damn right, I am blaming the US government. The facts is they didn't do their job. They didn't do what we pay them to do and that is to defend our sovereignty in face of potential threats.

The terrorists were wrong but so was the government. They acted practically acted together,

Look, I know it must have been a very scary day for little seven year old Atlas, but some of us were actually adults at the time and have looked in detail at the attacks.  You are espousing a fringe conspiracy theory without any actual basis in fact. One day I hope you can grow up, find The Bridge to Total Freedom like I did, and find some spiritual peace with yourself and the world.

When you falsely tell the murderer the government was his accomplice, you are defending him.  Stop it, it's offensive to the survivors.  They may have not seemed real to you, as a little kid watching this unfold, but they were.

9/11 is a lie! The survivors and the relatives of the victims are amongst the most vocal critics of the official version of events and support a new investigation.

Any they are experts...why, exactly? Cause they were there? If that's the case, I gotta find some better employment, cause I am pretty sure by those standards I can run the Fermilab particle accelerator; I went on a tour there once.
