11401  Other / Meta / Re: Old accounts: how to get one ? on: August 20, 2017, 12:33:14 AM
The only thing that you can do to get an account older than the said date is to buy it from another user. There is no way whatsoever to make your account older. To check for account sales, check the Digital Goods > Accounts and Invites.
11402  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org Administrators on: August 19, 2017, 08:31:52 AM
Hi there,

So I ran into an issue where I sold a used antminer (through ebay) The buyer claimed it arrived DOA, so I provided a refund. While trying to troubleshoot the problem, I found a post on this site, that matches my timelines perfectly and sounds like the problems my buyer was messaging me about. Only issue they mined just fine for 12 hours then began trying to modify the unit, and I'm guessing got heavy handed with it causing damage.

I'm wondering if there is someone who can confirm the email someone used to create their account, if I provide the one I believe they used. It's a longshot as they may have multiple e-mails, but maybe I would get lucky. I'd consider it a win if I could catch this fraudulent buyer, as a scam is a scam. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

Hmm, I don't think the admins of this forum would meddle with the trade you've made off-site. Also, theymos (the admin) is very strict on giving out personal info of its users to single individuals who may have been scammed. Unfortunately, no one can help you out in this matter since you're just assuming that the other user who posted the product you think is yours is in this forum.

Btw, care to share the topic you think is related with your case? Maybe someone can take a look at that and see for themselves.
11403  Other / Meta / Re: Default trust depth should be set to 3 on: August 19, 2017, 08:16:49 AM
Create your own trustlist. That might be hard for noobs but if you want to trade on here its worth the research. my depth is set to 0

Mine too. If you want to do business in this forum, don't trust DT1 or DT2 too much. Even if they handled thousands of trades in this forum alone, how can one be sure that they won't screw up when their next trade comes?

Not only is it impossible to get into DT1, those there aren't really doing active trading, so it's likely one will never get to DT2, either.

Most DT1 members earned their greens doing auctions and trades here, so yep, if you are a small-time trader I don't think you can earn DT1 status, not in this kind of system we have currently.
11404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Exchanges vs Mixers on: August 19, 2017, 06:16:39 AM
What is the reason why people should use mixers (if they for example want do launder btc)? Never used such services but for me it seems better just buy some forks on exchange and buy bitcoins back. At least you won't get even dirtier coins than you had before.

If they want to launder btc, why would they leave some trails of their coins? Buying other coins and withdrawing them would still keep a record of your activity in their platform since they require you to provide your identity in doing some large trades whereas mixers, they only require a small fee for your coins to be lost among suspicious eyes.
11405  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: BCC/BCH on: August 18, 2017, 06:31:25 PM
It's obvious that BCH is just made for people to have more money on them to use as fuel to further increase the price on bitcoin. Have you observed that a week after consensus was reached, bitcoin suddenly surged up in price?

Is bcc/bch will pump its price to the moon like btc?

Using the word "pump" implies that the price moves are artificial, being manufactured by a few people. This isn't happening with Bitcoin...and I don't think it's happening with Bitcoin Cash.

You will never know. During 2013, no one knew that the price was pumped until someone took the records of Gox revealing that it was trusty Willy who was doing these fake trades. It's just a possibility but then again, as of today's current state, bitcoin is receiving natural growth thanks to big businessmen endorsing their positive side of the cryptocurrency.

I hope these two can coexist...if they both exist harmoniously we all win.

They can coexist same as to what other altcoins are currently to bitcoin. However we must accept the fact that BCH is categorized as yet another altcoin and can never be really a competition to bitcoin.
11406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Future transaction tools on: August 18, 2017, 11:41:03 AM
With the rapid development of bitcoin. Do you think bitcoin is capable of being a future transaction tool that will replace the current transaction system?

Lightning networks could provide a new avenue for faster and cheaper transactions if deployed. LN is currently on the works by several developers and will be deployed on the mainnet once everything is clear.

I think bitcoin and fiat currencies will coexist for decades  Undecided

Two more years and it will be a decade for bitcoin. Fiat will surely be the currency that's going to be used by all nations but that doesn't mean bitcoin will just die out.
11407  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My $50 000 Bitcoin bet on: August 18, 2017, 11:34:18 AM
I have just made a $50 000 bet with one of my friends. Come 2019, i hope they will honor this bet. They think that in 2 years Bitcoin will either have crashed or will have been hacked. This person is supposed to be in the IT security industry. I find it quite interesting that most people I know in IT are not interested in bitcoin. Most people interested in bitcoin in my circles are entrepreneurs.

So what's your side of the bet? Any attainable figures you have in your head? Bitcoin is climbing higher highs everyday and it seems like this thing isn't going to rest. But when the fuel runs out, expect that there will be severe blows and sellouts that might happen. Not being a pessimist but anything can happen, really.

You will win the bet, and I'd say put their money where their mouth is; place the bet in a multisig address.
11408  Other / Meta / Re: Default trust depth should be set to 3 on: August 18, 2017, 11:23:47 AM
I've thought about that, but I tend to think that it'd be better to make it broader rather than deeper. I've been thinking recently about revisiting my proposal to force people to create unique trust lists.

It would be cool to not only share their trusted people, but also their excluded people. I'm not sure how it works with conflicting entries, though.

Exclusions do propagate; the rules are here.

Unnecessary complicated IMO and you're forcing people to pick users they may know nothing about or may not trust.  This is especially confusing for noobs.

Could be implemented but only for users who have been here for over a year or two since that is the time when people know who should be trusted or not by just observing and seeing some stuff done by other people. Also, it truly allows for a "decentralized" trust system where everyone has their own trusted people and you are not restricted into "trusting" those people who has the most greens in their profile.

Default trust is a ridiculous idea,  period.  Trust scores aren't, however, to the extent that they're not abused--which they frequently are.  This system that's in place is a joke.

Couldn't agree more. The DT kind of like forces people to believe that these guys are the only "good" guys in this forum and the rest are just there trying to scam you.

But a lot of 'em are cool on my watch, except for some truly exceptional human beings.
11409  Other / Meta / Re: How to quickly check who has quoted your message in the forum? on: August 18, 2017, 11:14:45 AM
You should see that on the top left corner of the forum. Show new replies to your posts. It does lead you to the topics which you may have replied to, but it's kinda time consuming since you need to find your exact comment and see who quoted it.

A faster way to do it is just check your previous post and see whether someone quoted it. Do it in your profile > show the last post of this person.
11410  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Market cap of BTC passes that of PayPal on: August 18, 2017, 08:43:31 AM
The day is here. Bitcoin is finally bigger than PayPal.

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/the-real-flippening-bitcoin-tops-paypals-market-cap/

I wasn't so sure BTC would ever see this day... now its become a reality. Currently $70.77 bln for PayPal vs. $70.99 bln for bitcoin. Next up, Western Union!

As Samuel L. might say:

But unfortunately, overall market capitalization don't define bitcoin's success alone. It's still a grey area for merchants since they still aren't confident enough of bitcoin. If there would be millions of users for bitcoin—not investors but real users of the coin to use as a currency—then that will be the time where we can call it an overall success.

so now  buying bitcoins is  better than investing in paypal itself can't belive this.

Better for the meantime, but can it hold? Not being a pessimist but you know, possibilities.
11411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do we have a universal wallet? on: August 18, 2017, 02:18:24 AM
Do we have a universal wallet that we can use to any bitcoin and alcoins?

Exchanges, perhaps? If you are to store altcoins and btc in a single wallet, you are putting yourself into a big risk of being hacked. One single file can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars down the drain. It's best to just keep these coins in their own wallets for you to be safe and have a proper management to your coins as well.
11412  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $45 Million: Ukrainian Lawmakers Reveal Big Bitcoin Holdings on: August 16, 2017, 02:24:44 PM
https://www.coindesk.com/45-million-ukrainian-lawmakers-reveal-big-bitcoin-holdings/

Quote
Recent disclosures by members of Ukraine's national legislature revealed that three lawmakers have a combined wealth in bitcoin of more than $45 million.

According to a report from RIA Novosti, Russia's international news service, the three lawmakers are all members of the "Petro Poroshenko Block," which constitutes the largest grouping of legislators within the Parliament.

Of the three named by the report, Dmitry Golubov possesses the most bitcoin: 8,752 BTC, an amount worth roughly $36 million at current prices. Alexander Urbansky possesses 2,494 BTC while Dmitry Belotserkovets owns 398 BTC, worth approximately $10 million and $1.6 million, respectively.

The disclosures come as Ukraine inches toward regulating the cryptocurrency.

I wouldn't be surprised if leaders of all developing countries held bitcoin - it's the one asset that can't be frozen if you get tossed out and need to run...

This just goes to show how sane it is to keep an asset that is free from the chains of the government when all hell break loose on the looming financial meltdown. Even lawmakers got their own share of bitcoins which is pretty surprising since they tend to always go against it.

This is pretty interesting. I wonder if any other countries have done something similar.

Of course there would be some, especially in pro-bitcoin countries like Japan and Australia. It only becomes somewhat a 'problem' for other people when these officials have a holding that's worth over millions.
11413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bill Gates on Bitcoin on: August 15, 2017, 10:14:49 PM
Bill Gates stated that the Bitcoin is the future and that it is better than currency. Would you assume that his statement (as one of the many reasons) added value on Bitcoin which made it stronger and more stable in the system?  Smiley

As the richest man in the world, many people would sure follow his words and would start going into the hype train without researching about the matter. That's where price comes from, FOMO. Added value, yes perhaps, but stronger? With weak hands, no.

Have you heard what Mr. McAfee said about Bitcoin??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKB9b4e7pH4

Check out his tweets and statements on Bitcoin. There are many more who have given statements and most of them are actually supporting it.

Some billionaires do understand the significance of bitcoin in the coming years since they know that every year, the USD is getting weaker and weaker hence they start hyping some potentially stronger asset before they go all in to that for the mean time. Also, McAfee is not like Warren Buffett who still believes in age old practices for money. This is 2017 and almost everything is ran and secured by computers.
11414  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you believe the FBI holds the biggest number of bitcoin? on: August 15, 2017, 10:06:31 PM
I think Bitcoin is too small and insignificant for governments to invest in it.
If you're asking about the FBI I think the only coins they are holding are the seized ones but these will be put on auction sooner or later.

Almost all of the coins the FBI holds currently came from seized deep web marketplace and some from illicit activities by individuals—which are mostly related to tax evasion. Also, these coins tend to go into auction immediately, so I doubt they have that much coins since bitcoin is still a small ripple in the financial ecosystem compared to gold and USD.

Maybe if Satoshi is really a government employee and it's all a big scam... Am I going too far? Grin

I like the conspiracies and the wild imagination. Perhaps Satoshi himself is the Feds and bitcoin is one genius tool to enslave us yet again, who knows?

i dont think FBI can hold anything, big people or corps. they have the biggest amount of BTC, thats why there is a hidden guy called satoshi nakamoto, otherwise we would have more information rather than his name.

The feds do have large controls in every sector a society has. That's how powerful they are despite being a small unit in the government.

imagine  at the beginning of BTC how much BTC mined by satoshi and his crew

That is approximately 1 million coins mined from Jan 2009-November 2009 where mining isn't really the thing of the blokes.
11415  Other / New forum software / Re: Guest posts with different usernames. on: August 15, 2017, 07:21:55 PM
I was also thinking of the same. Trusted members of the forum could be imitated by these Guests users and can therefore be a vehicle for them to scam gullible people. Trust ratings are displayed on the left and I get that, however some people are still too lazy to do a bit of research before engaging in trades that they think is a win for them.

Also, I noticed that you can no longer create usernames with spaces on the new forum. A good idea since some trusted forum usernames could be masked by spaces and small symbols, too.
11416  Other / Meta / Re: Decleration for old unaccessible forum account on: August 14, 2017, 07:54:06 PM
I had already mentioned i cant sign message for the btc addr on profile. Already seen theymos thread about account recovery. Hope he can dig up his pm and check his msg which we sent each other few months back about his initiative for new forum s/w

Unfortunately, theymos don't check his past PMs to verify that it is yours since he has a lot of things to do in beta.bitcointalk.org. You need to have access to any address that you might have posted or sent to anyone in this forum to help you get back your account. Also, signed message doesn't verify. Check extra spaces, symbols or letters that is causing the problems in your message.
11417  Other / Meta / Re: Regarding the Google Captcha added today when logging here on: August 14, 2017, 07:20:43 PM
I see there is a captcha I have to do before I can log in. This is a very good security measure but the bad thing is that I see only Google Captcha which many times even when you click correct squares it shows as wrong.

I think that Solvemedia is a much better captcha as one have only to type two words in order to log in.

+1. I'm using Opera Mini on my mobile earlier this morning but apparently I can't complete the captcha given by Google. Solvemedia is better since it also works on browsers that doesn't support flash (like the version of Opera Mini I'm using). But anyways, everything is alright in Google Chrome and Mozilla. A nice addition to the forum to further decrease bots that creates spam threads in several boards.
11418  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Oh Shit! - Did the blockchain just stop??!! on: August 14, 2017, 09:59:40 AM
It's not like waiting for an hour for a block hasn't happened in bitcoin yet. Also, it's not a guaranteed 10-minute wait time for the blocks to be processed/found. Quit yapping and try to read more about the topic. Sheesh.

Oh yeah, you're the guy who claimed that directory.io lets people steal your coins.

lol I remember when directory.io first appeared and people started to panic.  Articles on it everywhere the the guy who created it is just sitting and laughing.  Grin

The site is just full of empty addresses and not much to be found there. It was really funny for those who said that bitcoin is not safe since privkeys are laid out bare in the clearnet.
11419  Economy / Speculation / Re: Old hands, what is your current engagement level? on: August 12, 2017, 04:36:15 PM
I don't consider myself an old hand since I bought my first coins in 2014. The stash I have had back then was sold for a hefty profit, bought back in the latter part of 2015 and sold most in May which enormously boost my money in the bank (lol). Right now, I'm still trying to check out some decent ICOs that may break the records once more and hopefully make a decent amount out of it.
11420  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin the new gold on: August 12, 2017, 04:05:56 PM
The most valuable asset of bitcoin for me is its limited supply together with its (pseudo) anonymous feature. We live in a world where cameras and other stuff are always pointed at us, listening and observing our every move. People are now becoming aware of this and now wanting to break free from the system. Bitcoin offers just that, and that is where people see most of its value aside from being a great store of value / investment compared to gold. Also, financial magnates are now recognizing the capabilities of bitcoin to change the way we look at money, and it's a good thing since people believe in these experts thus creating a new influx of users to further drive up the price.
