NXT Vs. Bitcoin : Proposed Opening Shot
... I'll cut to the chase instead of go into a long(er) buildup.
It's an interesting idea in a Machiavellian sort-of-way, but I can't support it. Not even for the lulz. OK, I've withdrawn the idea. Please edit my quote in your post to delete it there too.

NXT Funding Committee Election Certification DataOn election night, the elected candidates are announced, there are victory and concession speeches, the TV cameras get turned off, and everybody goes home. Except that there is more to do. Certifying an election is the important (and boring) last step. There has to be transparency in how the election was run to make sure nobody cheated. Especially in elections run by a crazy dictator like me. So here's what you need to certify the NXT funding committee election. Below is the list of 500 ballot election codes I got at ElectionBuddy.com and who I sent them to. The first number is the ballot code number, the second number is where the person I sent it to stands on newcn's list of top 500 thread posters. A 000 in the second column means they are not on newcn's list and so requested their ballot code via PM to me. newcn's list: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg5456233#msg5456233I made some mistakes in sending the ballot codes out over the several days I was doing it. A few people sent me multiple PMs and I didn't realize that had happened, so I responded with multiple ballot codes to them. Some took advantage of this to vote multiple times and others didn't. I also sent two ballots to landomata for some reason. I think he was a stopping point on a list I was using one night and I didn't start at the right place on that list when I came back to it later the next day. This "misindexing" may have happened a few other times, I'm not sure. Finally, I sent a ballot code to 4747...888 after his huge bounty announcement, and got a PM back saying he had already voted with a code I had already sent to his everyday use secret-identity account. That's the generalities, here's the specifics: I sent two ballots (181 and 394) to crazybonkers, and he only used one (394). I sent two ballots (222 and 389) to Forobitcoins, and he only used one (389). I sent two ballots (040 and 074) to landomata, and he only used one (074). I sent two ballots (068 and 384) to qbd1313, and he only used one (384). I sent two ballots (145 and 388) to superresistant, and he only used one (388). I sent two ballots (248 and ??) to 4747...888, and he only used one (??). Those above were the good guys. There were also those who took advantage of the situation. I sent two ballots (120 and 378) to Eadeqa, and he used both of them. I sent three ballots (100, 369 and 385) to vitvert, and he used all three of them. So there were three ballots that shouldn't have been cast: 369, 378 and 385. Since the margin of the closest win was greater than three votes, these errors do not invalidate the election (whew). In addition to the data below, there's other data that can be used to validate the election. A zipped file containing copies of my PM pages where I sent out the ballots is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4oC1o991iaVcTNIWmtUS0dsaUk/edit?usp=sharingFinally, I will send a copy of my ElectionBuddy password to all candidates so they can verify the list below is indeed the correct list of ballot codes. I would post it here, except that emule would change it to lock everybody out. So just the candidates get it. If nobody contests the results of this election within the next 7 days by pointing out problems in this provided data, the election will be considered certified by default and its results will stand. This was a successful election and now the NXT community has elected spending committees. One of the reasons this election was successful is because boring data gets posted at the end of it. I've got a lot of catching up to do in this thread, also. For now, I will say a few things off the top of my head.
First, we have got to pay more attention to NXT as a 1st generation coin, and call it a coin, without "quotation marks" or apologies. We need vendors to accept it and people to want it. NXT cannot be mined and the ability to forge it requires one to buy it on an exchange first. We have to give people a reason to buy NXT. That reason cannot be as a stake to forge more NXT because without exception newcomers are dramatically disappointed when they figure out the true numbers that underlie NXT forging. Doge has a fun factor. NXT has zero fun factor. It is a frustrating experience all the way thru - getting a client set up and running, dealing with a super long password or losing all your NXT if you don't, realizing you're not going to make anything of true value by forging with small stake quantities, asking yourself what can you do with this coin you just bought.... Repeat: NXT is frustrating, Doge is fun. WE MUST LEARN FROM DOGE AND BE FUN.
Second, we have got to identify just what is 2nd generation about this coin that we really truly are going to support. Mixing/Zerocash anonymity? Peer to peer AE? Multisig gateways to other coins? Transparent forging TF to get high transaction speed? Multiple blockchains? Pruning the main blockchain? BCNext's latest out-of-left-field proposal for instant transactions based on some kind of multiple account? Jesus, even the guy with the secret plan is proposing new ideas before completely revealing his old ideas. This gives me a headache and a stomach ache at the same time.
TF and 1000TPS is what sold me on this coin and is the ONLY feature we have that is above and beyond all Bitcoin clones and even Etherium on the horizon. I get that 1000TPS would take dev work, but I thought TF was a done deal. Now it's not?
Third, we have got to pull together as a team and FOCUS. FOCUS. FOCUS. Maybe the funding committees are the start of this. I hope so. I would go so far to say that there needs to be yet another committee election, for a leadership committee, one with no money or unspent NXT behind it at all, just the raw power to say "NXT IS GOING TO DO THIS." and whose members then can stand up on a stage, virtual or real, in front of people and tell them that NXT is on a course to SOMEWHERE.
Maybe I'm just in dictator withdrawal from pushing the election over the goal line. Maybe sleep will help. G'nite.

Processing bitcoin payments. USA's FinCen says they have authority over bitcoin and any company that touches it is a money transmitter. Now bitcoin is as troublesome as fiat in America. Isnt America nice So, now you need at least $5 million to operation in USA, before you can even start. maybe you can choose a few states to lower the compliance cost, but every state has their own rules, add the federal stuff on top and the war on bitcoin escalates. James Do you have a source for this? I'd like to read up. http://www.fincen.gov/Read especially: http://www.fincen.gov/news_room/testimony/html/20140220.htmlFinCEN getting involved in cryptocurrency is a huge blow to Bitcoin in the US and NXT as well. If NXT implements NXTcash as a truly anonymous transfer service, we can expect FinCen to arrest James as a terrorist. I am only partially joking. will I get internet access from jail? Internet no, a huuuuge asshole yes. ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) since when is writing software a crime anyway? What has the world become?? Americans writing custom cryptographic code that gets shared with non-Americans are breaking the law under the Code of Federal Regulations Title 15 chapter VII, subchapter C, also known as Export Administration Regulations (EAR), administered and enforced by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). This almost certainly would include totally anonymous payment transaction software that is crypto signed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Export_of_cryptography_in_the_United_States

Texas Bitcoin Conference NXT Marketing Brochure http://nxt.sx/images/resources/NXT-Brochure-4.pdfAnd thank you again, generous donor, in funding 5000 copies of this to be printed at Austin, TX for my pickup there on Tuesday. NxtMinnow, I will be sending you what I don't use in Austin for you to hand out in San Francisco. Mail 'em on to the next Conference when you're done with them. Now we have 4500 brochures with these outdated texts ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) NXT goes full open source April 4, 2014 Speaking of exchanges: Cryptsy is coming! ongoing events: full open source code April 4; listing of NXT on Cryptsy Aren't we still going full open source on April 4 with the 0.8 version of the code, which has the database software? What is open source today is the not fully functional 0.7 version, right? So the point is still valid. Unfortunate we printed a few days before getting listed on Cryptsy, but anybody motivated to check will find us on Cryptsy now and this lends the brochure credibility. The key is what Big Vern said, which is right there. All 5000 of these will get distributed somewhere, and who knows which one will be the one that falls in a key hand to make a key connection for NXT? I have been thinking that we should start mailing batches of 100 of these brochure out to the various Bitcoin meetups: http://bitcoin.meetup.com/I will be making a proposal to the marketing committee for postage to do this...

I don't know if his idea is a good idea. Could we discuss possible routes and the implications for Nxt, please.
In my opinion the concept of TF is mostly a good one (i.e. to get a very large tx throughput) so I would think that the first thing is for the community to decide whether it agrees with that or not (all other decisions really depend upon this one). If as a community with think it's more important to have people forging with Raspberry Pis then we would be scrapping TF altogether (realistically it is *one or the other* even though marketing people want to have both). That is exactly what I mean. But we need a discussion about what that means for Nxt as a whole, for the value, for the decentralization aspect, for marketing (decentralization, raspberryPis, ...), for what ever. I don't know. It is a major decision. I'm not sure it's an either-or situation. "Raspberry Pi" is actually a code word for "super cheap nodes". There is still a possibility that a slightly more expensive node can have the technical capacity to participate in a high TPS environment. THis is one of the first things the infrastructure committee should test, starting with the $60 Odroid U3, which is much faster at forging blocks than a RPi: http://hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php

People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage.
Well, rickyjames, I think you are a pretty confident guy, do you want to be also a leader on a stage? ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) You know, I tried repeatedly to get on a stage to pitch NXT. It's pretty clear that Paul Snow, the organizer of the conference, politely kept that from happening, altho he put me on an altcurency panel that he headed and ran quite well. The problem with putting a guy from NXT on a stage at this point is the current disconnect of the NXT group from the dev team master plan. We need to get that straight before we go putting people on stage. Are we a spendable coin? Are we a Ripple? Are we a science project?

If that's the case (I'm also very surprised by this), I wonder why is there so much interest in Ethereum then? Their goals are similar to NXT, the (technology) path is just different..
Maybe it's because of the story of a teenager with pimples who challenges the financial world with some Turing Slipslop. That story is interesting. I got to see Vitalik up close and personal. He comes across as a real life Sheldon Cooper in his own little world but there is no question this guy is a genius with brilliant ideas and a very motivational speaker. Truly an exceptional man.

We will only get the attention of the mass community of Bitcoiners if we come up with a marketing theme / campaign that engages people to adopt NXT. The will not adopt NXT because it is better or technically superior. They will only adopt NXT if it meets a need of theirs that Bitcoin does not already currently meet.
We could focus on the decentralized asset exchange. It is something for selfish, technical interested or financial people. yes, but we need to find a very useful/needed use case for average people to use AE. And it must be a very specific use case, not only some theoretical examples. The average people doesn't care that it could sell its stocks using AE if it would be a company. The dialog should be like this: We: With NXT and its AE you can do <some specific, really useful stuff in the daily life>, bam! People: Really? I can do that with NXT? How can I get some NXT? The other possibility is to find use cases for businesses that attracts their customers to use NXT. sell your house with no legal fees! solicitors take a fair cut for handling the money side! if you can just agree on a sale and then do the money stuff on the asset exchange... cut the money grabbers out. fast and anonymous(soon) Have you sold/bought a house lately, and see the zillion pages of paper you've got to sign not just for the house but the mortgage on it? Somehow I doubt that NXT is just magically going to make that all go away. It is a total racket, and just having two people shaking virtual hands on a mysterious cryptosystem on the internet isn't going to replace it anytime soon.

+1. This. Pay attention to this. Somehow in my gut I feel like this NXT conversation, when it happens, will have something to do with smartphones - probably iPhones. One of the people I talked to (a group of two guys, actually) claimed to have the only Bitcoin wallet for iPhone because the Apple Store has kicked Bitcoin out of the Apple App ecosystem. They exploited a clever loophole - an organization can send apps to its members. So they set up a membership plan which qualifies you to download a group Bitcoin Wallet that is not available to the general public. Clever. Maybe NXT could do the same and become the iPhone Cryptocurrency app. BUT FIRST WE GOTTA GET MERCHANTS TO ACCEPT NXT. I am going to be doing some research into this, stay tuned. One last big lesson from Texas Bitcoin Conference - perhaps the bigget one of all. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. Until NXT can provide these, we are in the ditch.

Well, I am back from Texas Bitcoin Conference and it was an extremely interesting experience.
Marketing NXT at TBC was a frustrating experience. Wed night late I went around and put the NXT brochure out on literally 1600 chairs in preparation for the next day. At noon on Thurs I went around and picked up the unused ones. We probably only had 100 or so that were kept. Of course the conference only had around 600 people, far less than expected. I have made arrangements to ship the rest out to NxtMinnow for San Francisco.
The exhibitor area was kind of a joke. Very few tables, very few people went through it. I was wrong to push for a separate NXT table earlier, it would have been a waste.
I was on the cryptocoin panel discussion which I think went very well. The video will be out in a few days and I'll post a link. There were maybe 30 guys in the audience and on a show of hands probably only 5 had even heard of NXT.
I made a lot of good contacts, including a writer for Bitcoin Magazine with whom I had a very long talk about NXT. He is going to write an article on us. This is probably the number one positive thing for NXT that has come out of the conference.
The interest in Etherium in the Bitcoin community is extremely strong. This is a trend to watch.
People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage. People want to hear confident leaders on a stage.
The thing that has surprised me most, the biggest insight of all, is how few people care about the technical side of Bitcoin. Over 95% of the people there view Bitcoin as a social/political phenomenon and wouldn't care if it were powered under the hood by three witches cackling around cauldron of witches' brew. Talking about the advantages of transparent forging over competitive mining or PoW vs. PoS or trusted gateways or pretty much anything we discuss in this forum is totally irrelevant to them and actually to the future of NXT.
This is why Doge is so popular and is even surpassing Bitcoin in many ways. Doge meets a social need to feel connected to something warm and fuzzy that Bitcoin does not.
I am at a loss to figure out how NXT can pull off a similar viral meme feat. But we need to figure that out, fast.

This election is winding down and due to my efforts at Texas Bitcoin Conference I will not be sending any more unsolicited ballot codes. I believe the numbers indicate that we have hit the law of diminishing returns on sending out additional ballots. I believe the end results of this election will constitute a fair, honest and successful effort to empanel all three NXT funding committees.
BOTTOM LINE: At this time 238 of the 393 distributed ballot access codes have been used to vote. There are 155 unutilized (sitting in somebody's PM mailbox) and 108 undistributed (still on my computer) ballot access codes still available.

So has anyone researched the potential regulatory problems that we have for Asset Exchange and/or Cross Chain Transactions? That is, do we run into issues in the US for being a MSB, and do we need to do KYC and AML stuff.
I'd be willing to do the research and draft up a whitepaper if people would find that helpful or informative. My hope is that we can find a loophole that doesn't kill AE before it ever takes off, and the whitepaper would be the community's position on the issue(s).
my guess is that as long as the people maintaining the systems for our temporary coin exchange arent in the jurisdiction, and that the systems arent operated in the jurisdiction, then theres no issue. when true full decentralized CCT comes though, I dont see an issue at all. This was my first thought as well. But why not letting him digging up something. Maybe, there is more than we can imagine. At some point you change from cryptocoin to fiat to spend locally in the real world economy. That is the point where the government steps in, at least in the US. If the entity providing the fiat to the customer is outside the US, there is customer ownership of a foreign bank account, which is legally OK but immediately puts the customer under scrutiny. If the entity providing the fiat is inside the US, it had better be a registered US bank.
