12361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TEDxGreenough: Tack & Tech--Taming the New Frontier on: November 17, 2012, 03:36:25 AM
Until a better idea/wording become evident, I've changed the title of this thread to: TEDxGreenough: Tack & Tech--Taming the New Frontier

I spoke with John Romfo today, thus updating the meetup thread with the following post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=124314.msg1340295#msg1340295

I'm now seeking suggestions as to what such an event should consist of to make it a worthwhile endeavor.

I've provided the theme, albeit it needs defining.

We're looking at a great location to hold the event. Paws Up is a very fine resort. (discovered it my happenstance when replying to this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=120741.msg1312368#msg1312368 ~ the barn image excited me)

This is not billed at a pure Bitcoin, cryptography, or payments-oriented conference. The main theme will be centered around emerging tech industries, of which the previous mentions can all play a major part. This aspect needs to be brainstormed to the nth degree.

Currently, I'm looking at a 100 premium packages sold, and 350 max tickets pre sold for the speaking engagement(s).

I will not be in charge of handling any moneys, thereby eliminating any scam concerns.

I don't need to be fully in charge of this endeavor, but will play a very active role to make sure it comes to fruition. This has the makings of being an annual event.

Paws Up is an excellent venue. They even have GoodBear there.

Anybody who has spoke at a prior conference on behalf of Bitcoin and is in good standing with the community, will be able to attend free of charge (including meals). Consider it a well-deserved vacation.

Those paying full price will be able to bring a guest with them free of charge, provided you both are sleeping in the same bed, or they make a pallet on the floor or utilize a couch. The ticket cost will cover any vendor space (no size restrictions) if you have a product or service you're hawking. There will be at least 350 ticket holders consisting of non-bitcoiners viewing your wares.

Ideally, two consecutive speaking days should be allocated, with Fri/Sat being the most logic choice. (latter part of Friday and large part of Saturday, stating at noon, tentatively speaking).

This is now open for discussion. I look forward to addressing all questions and concerns.

~Bruno K~

EDIT: It is paramount that quality video equipment is available to record all the talks.
12362  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: (Poll) Tack & Tech: 2013 on: November 17, 2012, 02:41:17 AM
I might be swayed to DJ for you.   If we can do it during the summer, I would be interested.   I am bringing my fly-fishing gear.  I fish in Montana/Idaho during the summer.

Thanks for the offer, Dalkore. It looks like we're leaning toward October now. (read below for more info)

I spoke with John Romfo (above--click image to view Linkedin page) today on the phone, along with receiving another email from him outlining the package. I had to cut the conversation short due to being with a client at the time, but told him that I will recontact him come Monday. What I did find out is that what's available is in October, therefore we're looking at the first or second week, ideally, with the third/forth reserved as the backup plan.

During this time frame, the tents will not be available due to the cool nights. I'm not sure how this will affect the wedding I envisioned, but it's not a deal breaker.

Per the email I received, since the tents will not be available, the original 200 people staying on the resort has been scaled back to 150 max, depending on the 27 units (70 bedrooms/63 bathrooms) are utilized.

Also, John wrote, "...and you would have exclusive use of the property (no other guests would be present)."

I was mistaken in assuming that "full use" included meals and other activities paid in full. That is not the case, but I do have a workaround up my sleeve.

I have further morphed this idea into a TEDx style event. There is an auditorium/arena that can easily accommodate 500 people. Therefore, bootstrapping with TEDx, tickets can pre-sold to offset some costs, along with paying the keynote speakers.

I do believe that the title and theme of the event is keen: TEDxGreenough: Tack & Tech--Taming the New Frontier. But I do ask for help in defining the theme, and exactly what it would consist of. At this stage, all options are available. Chance are, we're not looking at a pure Bitcoin type conference, but Bitcoin can play a vital role.

(EDIT: Can not be a TEDx endeavor due to their guidelines)

More info forthcoming.

My  plates have the first bits for one of my addresses. Ok, that was a lie. They're actually just a random DMV-selected alphanumeric string, but there's no harm in pretending, is there?
Now that's something doable with 6 letters..!

From the school of go-big-or-go-home, I introduce TEDxGreenough: Tack & Tech: 2013 (see: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=124314.0)

Due to the guidelines here http://www.ted.com/pages/view/id/493#branding-identity-logo, that's currently the best way to dub the event.

We can even go with TEDxGreenough: Tack & Tech: Taming the New Frontier.

We can make this event whatever we desire, but quality filming of the talks is paramount.

Now, let's brainstorm this idea to the nth degree.

I'm still looking for ideas.

Beside Bitcoin and cryptography, what other tech would be a good fit to join in the mix?

This is exactly what we came up with, but decided to show the auger nonetheless to throw off our competition. In fact, we already have half the hole dug, but recently moved it to better and more secure location. We don't what our competition looking down our hole and reverse engineering it to see how we dug it. Dig!

On the forum over at Advanced Strategic Industrial Carbon (ASIC), we have this image depicting what the diamonds will long like once produced.

Feel free to join the forum over at ASIC, but don't be surprised if you're banned from using it if you post anything that disses us, for we are a touchy feeling crew.

Is the live band dank?

There's an idea. I wonder he'll be able to include Paws Up in Dank's World Tour.

In spirit, Dank will be there, for we'll be in the wilderness with possible some members smoking peace pipes.

12372  Other / Off-topic / Re: (Announcing) MDM LLC on: November 16, 2012, 03:28:10 PM
Are there any plans to eventually move this business over to Advanced Diamondized Industrial Carbon (ADIC)? If yes, can I preorder?

MDM LLC has now changed our name to Advanced Strategic Industrial Carbon (ASIC). Since we believe that humanity is a diamond in the rough, why not provide for all carbon based thinking organisms.

Everyone can now STFW, because as you can clearly see, we are taking delivery of this auger.

Full Disclosure: This thread was meant to add humor at the expense of BFL. I have since posted the following:

From this day forward, I will no longer be critical of BFL or their staff unless they fail to produce.

Here's my olive branch: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=124314.msg1335969#msg1335969

~Bruno K.~

I may consider closing this thread if the above conflicts with the intent of this thread.

Peace, BFL.

The crazy part for me is that my wife was buying from wordpress today. She is setting up a wedding website for her sister. She is sending them an email stating that their acceptance of BTC was the final persuasion.

Yes, this is big news. Other sites will follow wordpress and reddit.
Rally time?

The truth is that they can now start accepting payments with only a 0.99% fee charged by Bitpay instead of a 3% + $0.30 fee by paypal and credit cards.

Capitalism wins!
you cant compare paypal and bitpay like that. Bitpay charges almost 3% to have your funds in USD. ...SO its pretty close to paypal fees..
But there is company called Samplepay charges only 2.8% for cc transactions and no other fees just monthly

But zero chargebacks. Plus, WP doesn't have to convert to fiat. I'm sure they always need stuff for their office. They can head on over to Memory Dealers and make purchases. I'm also pretty sure that they may have cash prizes for their employees as incentives. They can now award the winners with Bitcoin.

Since Bitcoin will only be a small part of their income at first, they can simply amass them until the value goes up, cashing them out latter, thus overcoming the vig. In fact, they win even if they don't cash out a single coin before the price plummets, because they have added subscribers without using a cent of advertising. Genius!

Seriously though, if you're PayPal right now, this should be concerning.  It's not that this instance is going to have any noticeable effect on their bottom line, but, from PayPal's perspective, this isn't something you'd want to turn into a trend.

There's even a Honeymoon Tent: http://www.pawsup.com/glamping/honeymoon-tent.php

Who is planning on getting married next year? How would you like to have the wedding take place in front of your fellow bitcoiners and enjoy the resort free of charge. The only caveat will be that you will have to get married on a Thursday afternoon, thus kicking off the event.

The tenative timeline would look like this:

  • Noonish: All check in.
  • Orientation/Wedding
  • Reception Dinner with a couple talks (this should get her further excited)
  • Live band with open bar.
  • Sheep, except for the honeymooners.

A copper tub for two and The Last Best Bed. Need we say more? Pinnacle Camp features our exclusive honeymoon tent: Tango Point. Its private location, incredible views and plethora of romantic amenities make this the quintessential accommodation for honeymoons. Activities like horseback riding and hot air balloon rides as well as gourmet cuisine at your dining pavilion will complete your unforgettable celebration.

While waiting for a few more questions to be answered by John at Paws Up, I might as well bump this with some more info.

The tentative date is late September/very early October in 2013.

Any person who has previous spoken at prior conferences and desires to attend will not have to pay a single satoshi. All that would be asked of you is to give a talk (any length) or have a booth set up showcasing your latest wares (also no charge).

Although the attendance may be low as previous conference, the value should come in the video presentations recorded at the event. The expected audience should be no less than 200 people per speaking engagement.

There will be non-bitcoiners present. The staff is huge at this resort, so I would fathom to guess that a few of them may even be in attendance.

I bet nothing mentioned on this brochure was available at previous Bitcoin conferences: http://www.pawsup.com/pdf/Wilderness_Adventures.pdf

Surely, you got to at least like the name: Tack&Tech:2013
