Could we feasibly start up an cross-exchange trading group on our own? No bots, just people taking shifts. Investors pour BTC in, we give whatever we got back out with a 5% cut or so?

You should do triangular arbitrage.  Think  about going to other exchanges that use other currency pairs like BTC/RMB at btcchina.com

I can't imagine any english speaking person that uses bitcoin that is not on these forums.  The entertainment is totally worth it.

Next bitscalper is going to start selling web and server design.
1243  Other / Meta / Re: [Feature Request] Scammer sub forum on: March 12, 2012, 10:41:00 PM
There's already a section mostly for discussion of scammers: "trading discussion". People are usually given scammer tags only after a topic about the person has been in Trading Discussion for a while.

The forum doesn't arbitrate disputes or handle justice. These are messy, complicated issues unrelated to forum moderation. Other people should independently handle these things. The scammer tag is designed to be the least-severe reasonable response to scamming. If I could do less in this area, I would.

Quote
1.  A labeled scammer creates a new screen name to scam again.

Scammer IPs are banned from registering new accounts. When scammers provably bypass this ban, their IP info can be released.

Quote
2.  A labeled scammer does not have the ability to get their scamming status removed.

As far as I can recall, there are no cases where someone incorrectly received a scammer tag. I'd like to keep it that way.

fair enough.
1244  Other / Meta / Re: [Feature Request] Scammer sub forum on: March 12, 2012, 08:15:39 PM
Thanks for the feedback.

I was thinking it could work in the following way.

1.  A potential victim of scamming makes a post in the Scammer sub-forum that lists what happened and their evidence.  The post thread would be open so that others may post if they were also scammed or have evidence of scamming by the accused, but they can only provide details of what happened.  No pointless comments or trolling would be accepted by the moderators.

2.  The sub-forum moderator(s) send a message to the accused scammer that shows that they have been accused of scamming with a link to the accusation.  The accused scammer would be given the opportunity to respond to the allegation of being guilty or innocence.  Again, moderators would only allow descriptions of what happened with supporting evidence.  Both parties would be encouraged to work out a deal to settle the matter.

3.  A poll and/or the scamming forum moderators would then decide in favor of the potential victim or accused scammer with expected amount that is to be owed to the victim if scamming is the judgement.

4.  If a judgement of scamming is found then the administrators would be notified to mark "SCAMMER" and to release their IP information.

5.  Other people would then be allowed to post any identifying information of the user so that the victim can have other avenues to be compensated if they wish.  At any time the scammer can pay back the judgement amount to the victim and the thread will be closed and their SCAMMER tag would be removed.

Matthew, I think you should release those chat logs you had with Bitscalper.

What's the point? The only thing in them is more evidence of his unprofessional and dangerous operations, his constant bluffing about his abilities, constant name dropping, and general scammy attitude.

People here are only concerned about the facts-- where is there money. The logs don't help them find that out.

I just suggest as people are attacking you for your helping to show Bitscalper is incompetent.  You do  have extra information that other members of the forum do not have.  I don't see how people still don't get Bitscalper's incompetence so maybe the logs will help.

Also see my topic in meta
1246  Other / Meta / [Feature Request] Scammer sub forum on: March 12, 2012, 05:47:50 AM
I noticed that many times the "SCAMMER" tag does not work well.  Either two things happen.

1.  A labeled scammer creates a new screen name to scam again.

2.  A labeled scammer does not have the ability to get their scamming status removed.

I propose a sub forum on bitcointalk.org that lists any new scammers that are named so by the moderators.  I know there is a topic that lists scammers, but I think a central thread would allow for better scammer identification.  My purpose is to give more of a stick to the "SCAMMER" tag as not only will the scammer be listed and all members of the community notified, but also I suggest that all IP addresses that they registered and/or logged into bitcointalk.org be listed as well.

I have no problem with people wanting to remain anonymous and I respect people's desire to be anonymous.  Anonymity is not a right, it is only a luxury and if someone is accused of scamming by a critical value of people or substantial evidence then victims can have a means to identify the scammer for possible restitution.

Also, it might be a stick to keep people from scamming in the first place.

Those that have scammed would have an area to pay back their victims.

I would be willing to volunteer to moderate and/or post the IP addresses under the supervision of this forums global moderators.

The resources of Uganda are rare earth elements currently. Since China controls most of the rare earth industry, is this an attempt to gain control of a part of that?

Rare earth elements are really rare.  They are everywhere.  It is just dirty to produce them.  China has very relaxed environmental laws and put a lot of investment in getting the industry, thus now they control 90% of the market.  America could do it in their backyard but the Californians and Floridans would cry.

Bind - why don't you offer them your services so a proper forgery can be done?

for many reasons... the main ones being ....

1. I am honest and would not be a participant in the creation of a forgery.
2. I am not a whore who sells out my ethics, values, and/or morals.
3. I believe in freedom, liberty, and sovereignty, so I would not be a participant in facilitating the descruction of said.

How about forging an unethical document?
1251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Making a BTC pitch to a billionaire on: March 11, 2012, 10:29:06 AM
would it be a good idea to try & get a Billionaire interested in Bitcoins at this stage?

I would much appreciate feedback on this & if you think that it would be then how would you suggest I approach this person, who I shall call E, I can pretty much be sure that E will read a brief proposal & maybe links to a more in-depth one, here's some background on E

E is someone I admire greatly, creative, fun, open minded, very very generous with an active philanthropic foundation that supports many varied worthy causes & projects - such as medical research, female empowerment, the arts, animal charities, ecological products & issues, *** to the tune of $*** /year & also has contributed to projects in the arts/women in my local area related of a good friend of mine who I persuaded to contact E's foundation & ask for help with funding what she was doing (my friend's husband was very grateful to me, as in "do you know how much you've just saved me per year?" - it was in the 5 figures)

E lives & works in the US & a couple of countries in the EU mostly & plenty of work too - not just a philanthropist

I am a long time neighbor of E & while not knowing E personally (I have though met & been to one of E's functions) I am good friends with at least one of E's buddies (though they don't hang out together nowadays, though are close - E came to his 50th BD party etc) whose house/s E bought at a good price so he could buy an amazing deal/property nearby & who's son (E's godchild) works full time now for E at an ecological production unit that E started under 5 years ago with an initial investment of some $15M - I organized with my friend's son a private group tour of the facilities & it's impeccable, everyone was very impressed with it

I have also witnessed, by chance, anonymous incredible generosity from this person that probably no one else who even knows E actually knows anything about at all

If E does choose to support something new then generally prefers to do that as a lump sum in to some project rather than as an ongoing commitment, though has contributed regularly to my friend's bi-annual arts/women projects

I obviously have no idea if E will have the slightest interest in Bitcoin or if interested what E may choose to do, E lead quite a rebellious bohemian life when younger so I'm thinking it may appeal & as a very high net worth individual may see personal advantages to it, E uses cash a lot - the donations to my friend's project are in cash (at least the first one was, I haven't asked how subsequent ones were given), on the other hand E may be quite indifferent to it, E may find it of interest that instead of being approached for funding here for once someone may be offering an opportunity to make money whist hopefully doing something that may be of long term benefit to Bitcoin

I shall ask my friend if I can use his name when sending my proposal, I'm sure that it would be fine - in fact even if I didn't ask him it wouldn't be any big deal for him - but as his son now works for E it is only right that I run it by him first

So, feedback, brief initial proposal ideas, deeper linked info, proposals of what E could contribute to Bitcoins if liking the concept wished to see it grow & support it & how E might benefit in various ways by doing so or at least not be out of pocket - or that the good done was worth the expenditure which would be E's main motivation I'm sure

I shall probably take my time with this as I'd like to get it right, it's a one shot deal I imagine, though I can be quite impulsive & just say screw it - let's do it & send it off when I feel that it's hot enough to be worth a crack at & to continue tweaking & faffing around may mean a lost op

this is a dynamic post in that I shall edit it to fill in the bits where I've just left ***s atm & need to look up or check - plus adding to it anything else that comes to mind re this later & correct typos & stuff as I haven't read it back tho even, as other stuff to get in to ~ partying etc.  Tongue

posting this early stages idea (though I've had it for a while) here in Speculation, if & when it's ready to propose to E then I shall start a post on it in the main Bitcoin forum unless peeps think that it would be better off just continuing here with this initial one

You want billionaire E to support a cyrptocurrency that is in direct competition to the fiat currency that makes this billionaire a billionaire with its inflation practices that keeps securities such as stocks moving up.

The only way you can get the billionaire to buy some bitcoins is to scare them into thinking that it is only a matter of time before hyperinflation impacts USD and EUR and bitcoins would be a good hedge.  You have to get them off of gold.  If they are a billionaire then they have the ability to buy large sums of gold close to spot market price.  Maybe use the history of gold and silver confiscation to keep E away from precious metals.

Guys,
I'm sorry things are taking this long. We are still trying to recover the lost withdrawals database table, and it seems there's no way to get it back. So we'll try to recover the whole accounting this way :  Please send an email to info@bitscalper.com with the amount you claim you had left to widthdraw, including a list of all your deposits to bitscalper, once we have figured out how much we owe to anyone we will proceed to reimbursements.  Anyhow we're back to business with a powerful new strategy and we'll update the website in the next few days.

How will you know if someone is telling you the truth?

Bingo.

If I remember correctly when Bitscalper was first created they stated to use any email address even a fake one.  I used a fake email address and some randomly generated password because I knew this was going to implode eventually.

So if other people used a fake email address how is Bitscalper going to verify that the person is really who they claim to be?

I wonder if people realize the risk to reward ratio for Bitscalper was too high.  They got a 1% return a day for about a month.  So if someone put in 100 bitcoins that is 1 bitcoin a day.  They made 30 bitcoins but then the site went down for 30 days.  So really they made 0.5% a day.  Of course they might not get any of their money back so they lost money!  In that time they could have traded their bitcoins for USD and earned the interest on Bitcoinica.

We should of made bets on when bitscalper.com would be hacked or have their website down for an long amount of time.  That risk/reward ratio would have been much better.

And don't forget, never talk to the cops. It's their job to put someone in jail, and they don't care who it is.

Here is a really good lecture from a law professor and a cop who talks about your rights and how to deal with situations.

I have seen this, this is a great video.

Another good source of information is Homicide: A Year on the Killing Street by David Simon.  It gives a lot of interesting techniques that police use for interrogations and it shows that most convictions are due to getting the suspect to tell their story not CSI magic.

Edit:  Ay Dios mio!.... 3rd from the the top on the suggested videos.

p2pfoundation is a wiki site to "study the impact of Peer to Peer technology and thought on society". They're close to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Their overview about Bitcoin: http://p2pfoundation.net/Bitcoin

Their criticisms: http://p2pfoundation.net/Bitcoin_-_Discussion

Quote
Summary of a p2p-based critique by Michel Bauwens

[...] However, the Bitcoin design may also have some serious flaws. First of all, the way it is mined privileges the technical community itself as it can have access to networks of botnets to generate coins, in a way most people can't. Secondly it is a 'scarcity' based currency, subject to hoarding and wealth accumulation (only 21m bitcoins will be created, insuring a constant growth in value), that does not really change what is 'wrong' with the current currency system. As many so-called 'peer to peer' technologies (such as crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, etc..) it may increase wider participation and 'distribution' but without necessarily changing the dysfunctional neoliberal functioning of the market. Nevertheless, what it really shows is that socially sovereign currencies are viable, and could be created as a tool of the countereconomy, though this may require a different ruleset for its functioning. so that true 'social' peer to peer values can be integrated in the design of future 'post-Bitcoin' currencies. [...]

They like Ripple a lot more: http://p2pfoundation.net/Ripple

Considering the Occupy Wall Street people can't do mathematics correctly anyway, I would be suspicious of anything they say.  "We are the 99%.... of the 1%"

You have to know that most of these medical services are the cutting edge of technology and that technology is financed and researched in America.  It is like getting the PS7 while the rest of the world plays on the PS3.

Hi guys,
I currently am sitting on 175 shares of AAPL stock. For those of you who are aware, Apple shares are trading at rough $550,00 USD. I am planning to liquidate my holding and am thinking of reinvesting in Bitcoin.

Would a purchase of $85,000 of BTC drive up the price significantly?

This is not a troll post, I am genuinely interested.

Thanks for your time,
Omni

Go for it.

WTF? Oh, yes election time. Send in the clowns! Roll Eyes

And I thought this place would be full of agorists....

I had to look up agorists.  Embarrassed
My "clown" remark was in reference to trotting out the birther issue just in time for election season.

My agorist remart was because agorists don't vote.  They believe in using the counter-culture or grey markets to take down the current system.  Working within the system will only corrupt the individual.  I only vote so I am on the jury pools so I can nullify victimless crimes.
