1321  Economy / Services / Re: new unique project give btc to get altcoins on: August 28, 2020, 08:18:46 AM
Doesn't matter how i look at it...

I pay $100, you give me $70 worth of ALT's and $10 back (why??? You could have asked for $90 instead)
So, you make $20

Next month, same deal but i only pay $90...
So, you make $10

That's $130 in 12 months... Defenatly a win for you... But where's the added value (the win) for me? I'll be stuck with $840 worth of altcoins i didn't pick myself with a "trading fee" of $130 (>15%) . I can just use binance, or etherdelta, or bisq, or openbazaar,... And if i use those, i'll get the coins or tokens I want, and it'll cost me less than $130 in fees.

I just fail to see the added value...

I don't see how your "compounding" mechanism would add profit for me (just for you), i don't see why you'd ask $100 and just give $10 back at the end of the month.

Maybe there's a language barrier between us, but i really don't get this service.
1322  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Storing the coins for day-to-day use? on: August 28, 2020, 08:00:30 AM
@hosseinimr93 is 100% correct.

I just wanted to address your very specific question completely:
--snip--
I want Electrum to be installed in 2 places at the same time, both will be online. If I change the password of the first installation, what happens to the second one
--snip--

The (short) answer: nothing

The (long) answer (slightly simplified):
When you use the same recovery seed to create 2 wallets on 2 devices (as mentioned by hosseinimr93), both devices will use the same master private key (since this master key is calculated using only the seed phrase, not the password).
This master private key is used to derive private keys, the private keys are used to calculate public keys, the public keys are hashed to create addresses.

In other words, both wallets will contain the same private keys/addresses. If you fund one of these addresses, both wallets will update/increase their balance. If you spend an unspent output funding one of the addresses managed by your wallets, the balance of both (identical) wallets will decrease.
It's a difficult concept for new members... Most new members think the wallet actually stores your bitcoins... This is not true... Bitcoins aren't anything physical. Your balance is actually just the sum of unspent outputs funding addresses whose private key(s) you controll. These unspent outputs are registered on the decentral ledger: the blockchain. So, your two wallets actually only contain keys to spend unspent outputs that are registered on a decentral database.
Your wallet is merely a "window" to the blockchain. It's a nifty tool that parses the decentral database for you, and sums up all entries funding an address that is controlled by your wallet. So, both wallets can contain the same keys, and offer the same "view" of the blockchain.

The password is used to encrypt your wallet file... But the wallet files itself should contain more or less the same data (i say "more or less" because you can also store metadata, like labels...)

@hosseinimr93 is right tough: it's not a good idear to use the same seed phrase for a mobile and a desktop wallet. If you lose your mobile, or if your seed gets compromised because it was on an insecure device, you'll lose all your funds!
1323  Other / Archival / Re: [ANN] Anonymixer - the Anonymous Bitcoin Mixer on: August 28, 2020, 06:04:35 AM
--snip--

Also, as you are providing letter of guarantee, use of CDN would not allow MITM. Without using CDN, you are just exposing your IP, i.e. 46.17.96.4, open for DDOS.

It's the other way around...
A CDN is just a content delivery network. It won't protect you against DDOS attacks.

I do know one CDN that's giving away proxy functionality for free... And because they act as a proxy, they also mitigate DDOS attacks to a certain point (eventough their primary function is being a caching proxy). However, this CDN DOES act like a MITM. I stay away from any mixer that uses this CDN, since they'll decrypt any data exchanged between me and the mixer and they'll be able to store the unencrypted data in a US based server farm.

I've actually written a complete thread about this in the past:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5247838
please read and educate yourself before you push anybody towards cloudflare in the future... Cloudflare is fine for any service that isn't privacy-focussed... But not if you think your clients don't want their details in an FBI/CIA/DOD/... database. I, for  one, wouldn't care if the FBI knew i was buying new lightbulbs, so a lightbulbstore could use cloudflare.
On the other hand, i WOULD mind if the FBI knew i was mixing coins, or buying a subscription to a porn site, or if i bought a new hunting knife. So if one of these businesses would use cloudflare, i wouldn't touch them with a 20 foot pole.

What the OP is doing is the best possible scenario...

BTW: there are other, better, more superior ways of dealing with a DDOS attack. If you're running an online service, and you need privacy for your users, you should stay away from cloudflare...
1324  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Money stolen from blockchain.com on: August 27, 2020, 02:09:49 PM
Every time a newbie asks for wallet advice, people will point to blockchain.com/.info.

What? There are people who actually advise web wallets to newbies??
--snip--

Yup... I can't point to an exact thread/user right now, but i'm positive that this happened multiple times. And i'm not just talking about newbies pointing other newbies in the wrong direction (eventough the bulk of the wrong-direction-pointing is indeed done by newer members)...
I'm talking about Senior members stating that blockchain is fine, that blockchain is an exception when it comes to web wallets, that they've used blockchain since (now()-$x*$years) and haven't lost a single satosi.

Offcourse, this is derailing OP's thread a little bit, but it's still an interesting discussion...
1325  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Money stolen from blockchain.com on: August 27, 2020, 12:12:29 PM
Yup... Sorry to see you've been victimized...

Many people have given a plausible explanation... I wanted to give a recap (with a couple extra attack vectors), following things could have happened:
  • (clipboard) virus/malware on your pc
  • phising site
  • vulnerable email
  • vulnerable storage of your seed phrase
  • somebody had (physical) access to your pc
  • bug in blockchain.com
  • ...

If you can't find out the actual attack vector, it might be wise to scratch your pc and reinstall your OS just for good measures.

Every time a newbie asks for wallet advice, people will point to blockchain.com/.info. Every time they do so (and i notice) i'll say something in the line off: "don't use a web wallet, they are not safe". After my lecture, every time someobody will enter the thread and start defending blockchain...
I always hear stuff like: "I've been using blockchain for x years and i've hoarded up to x btc in my wallet and i've never had any problems", and i always point out that it's not because user x doesn't have a problem, that it can be generalised for user y.
Threads like this thread should be a reference we can point to whenever people start to defend the use of a web wallet.
1326  Other / Off-topic / Re: is KingTrans legit? on: August 27, 2020, 12:07:17 PM
Hi,

I guess you'll have to move this topic to "offtopic". This subforum is for Bitcoin related Beginners & Help questions, not for questions that are unrelated to bitcoin (that's why we have an offtopic subforum).
1327  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to get merit on: August 25, 2020, 02:03:23 PM
This subforum is for Depelopment and technical discussion. Posts about merit do not belong in this subforum.
As a matter of fact, this subject has been discussed so many times, i really don't see the point in the next thread talking about exactly the same subject, but that's just my personal opinion.

At very least, move this topic to the correct subforum...
1328  Economy / Reputation / Re: Lucius is signature spammer by dkbit98 ? on: August 25, 2020, 01:55:53 PM
As far as i'm concerned, i've always liked the way you post. I can't recall any instances in which I perceived any of your posts a being spammy.

I don't want to dig into this particular occurence, but i can say i've been called a sigspammer a couple of times, usually when having a discussion with somebody that was losing said discussion (at least from my point of view). I've always seen these shout-outs as a hail-mary pass.
I guess the general idear is: "I don't agree with this user, but i cannot win this discussion, so i'll point out this user is wearing a signature instead and hope other people will change their point of view towards my opponent and also brand him a sigspammer. Thus avoiding the valid points he/she is making in this discussion. This way I can distract other people from the fact i'm losing and save face ".

Once again: i don't know if this was the case here, it's just something that has happened to me a couple of times before. And i've seen similar instances involving other people aswell.
1329  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Question about my PC for mining on: August 25, 2020, 01:39:35 PM
I'm totally new to mining.

I'm not really sure, but how does the mining performance look for my computer?

Ryzen 5 1600
16GB RAM 2993mhz
Radeon 5700

I bought it mostly for gaming, but since I don't have time for that anymore, then how effective can it be? What can be improved?

you're in the bitcoin mining subforum, so i'll give you a bitcoin mining answer... Your pc is worth nothing for bitcoin mining... You might aswell try to mine using pen and paper, the odds of solving a block are only a little bit smaller...

Next time, read the sticky post(s) before posting in a subforum...
Here's one of those sticky posts:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2959621.0

--snip--
TL/DR Summary:
 - You CANNOT meaningfully mine bitcoin with your PC or laptop no matter how powerful it is.
 - You CANNOT meaningfully mine bitcoin with your tablet or phone no matter how powerful it is.
 - Mining apps for your phone or tablet that claim to mine bitcoin are almost certainly scams.
 - You CANNOT find software here to mine bitcoin with your PC by itself.
 - You MIGHT be able to do one of the above with altcoins, but such discussion goes into the altcoin mining section.
 - You CANNOT find or post software here to mine on other peoples' PC without their permission.

1330  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Probably a stupid question. on: August 25, 2020, 08:30:08 AM
There's no denying, crypto is sometimes used on the darkweb to purchase illegal stuff, and people do fall for crypto scams. However, exactly the same can be said about cash, gold, barer bonds, wire transfers, creditcards,...

The big difference is that crypto is only used by a small part of the population, so it's easy for newspapers to talk trash about crypto. It's an easy story that only victimises a very small part of the population while giving a good story to the rest of their readers (so it's good profit for them to highlight any negative aspects of crypto).

To purchase crypto, you can go the p2p way and search sellers or buyers on fora (like this one). Or you can use services like localbitcoins (which is a moderated form of a p2p trade), you can use ATM's, you can use decentralised exchanges (like bisq) or centralised ones (KYC or no KYC), or you can just spend your BTC to buy/sell gold, other precious metals or stones,... Loads of ways to buy and sell crypto, the odds of getting stuck with your funds are very small.

I really don't like to pass KYC, however, IF you're really afraid of having an address funded by an unspent output that can be linked to any kind of illegal activity, you might want to go full legit and buy your BTC from a KYC exchange with good reputation and actual licences in a trusted country. If the police/tax authority/a seller starts asking difficult questions, you can actually show them where you purchased your BTC.
1331  Other / Meta / Re: Why Bitcointalk Account Ban? on: August 24, 2020, 10:50:49 AM
It's very hard, even painfull, to try to read what you've posted... Anyways, it looks like you're saying one of your accounts was banned, but when i look at the posts made by this account, it seems like you make a lot of posts on a daily basis.:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2827690;sa=showPosts

It's you (as a person) that is banned, not only your account. If you keep posting with one account while an other account belonging to you is banned, this is called ban evasion... Ban evasion is a bannable offence.

So, after your admission, i'd say your chances of having this account banned aswell are pretty big.
1332  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining on a Dedicated Server on: August 24, 2020, 08:44:06 AM
Dedicated servers usually don't have a limit on mining. My servers are rented with SoYouStart. I don't mine with them, but when i read their TOS a long time ago, i don't think there was a rule against mining.

However, if you rent a VPS, and you mine, you'll probably be kicked in a matter of hours/minutes
1333  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How do I combine small transactions in a ledger wallet on: August 24, 2020, 05:44:23 AM
--snip--

Thanks so much this is awesome.  I'm not familiar with the eletrum UI so this was a great help!  That's the way I'm going to do it, just have to wait for the fees to drop and pick which ones to combine.  Smiley

I always give the advice to wait untill the feerate drops, but actually i see no harm in creating a transaction with a 1 sat/vbyte fee right now (even if the average feerate is way to high). You can create it and broadcast it, it doesn't matter if it just sits in the mempool without getting confirmed. If it gets pruned from the mempool of most nodes in a couple of weeks, you can just rebroadcast it.

The upside from this method is that your transaction will get confirmed if there would be a very short dip in the total size of the mempool, and if there's a systematical decline, your transaction will get into a block as soon as it's in the tip of the mempool.
The downside is that it's possible you'll have to rebroadcast.
1334  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How do I combine small transactions in a ledger wallet on: August 21, 2020, 03:20:17 PM
--snip--
If you are not in a hurry to send the transaction, just send everything you have to yourself with a 1 sat/byte transaction. This will combine all the inputs in 1 output.

This will take some time to confirm, but it will make everything better in the future: When you decide to spend those coins, you can spend all of them with the fee you want (e.g 20 sat/byte) and only pay that for a 1 input tx transaction.

Basically what ranochigo said above, but with a mora practical wording. Smiley

I agree with TryNinja and ranochigo, i just wanted to add it would be a good idear for the OP to use electrum for this procedure. It gives you better controll over your fee and lets you select with unspent outputs to use as an input. I like ledger's GUI, but it's less ideal when you want to have more controll over the transaction you're creating.

So: basically, create an electrum wallet using your hw wallet (make sure you verify electrum after downloading it), wait untill the feerate drops (check here: https://jochen-hoenicke.de/queue/#0,24h), create one 1 sat/vbyte tx consolidating all your unspent outputs... Wait Smiley

update(s)

  • After buwaytress's feedback I changed the way the coupon codes work, the coupon "bitcointalk2020" should work fine now (it's the best coupon currently available)
  • I messed around with the google translate plugin, updated it a bit, tweaked it a bit, but there are still cases in which i can simulate buwaytress's "bug-report". I guess i'll have to install a manual translation plugin, but the owner asked me to postpone this for a couple more weeks untill there's more time (manual translations are time-consuming)
  • After buwaytress's feedback I changed the wording on the crypto payment options to a (hopefully) less confusing phrasing
1336  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Bump fee window on: August 20, 2020, 01:50:39 PM
I'm not really following the discussion, but maybe the broadcasting fails because of this

Quote
The replacement transaction must pay for its own bandwidth in addition to the amount paid by the original transactions at least by the rate set by the node's minimum relay fee setting. For example, if the minimum relay fee is 1 satoshi/byte and the replacement transaction is 500 bytes total, then the replacement must pay a fee at least 500 satoshis higher than the originals.

1337  Other / Archival / Re: [ANN] Anonymixer - the Anonymous Bitcoin Mixer on: August 20, 2020, 01:29:00 PM
--snip--
We apologise in advance for the lack of bells and whistles on the front-page
--snip--

I actually see this as something positive Smiley

Finally, a new mixer that doesn't include a MITM by opting to use cloudflare's CDN. You wouldn't believe how many times i had a discussion with mixer owners that found it to difficult to use certbot...

I'm happy with the mixing methods i'm currently using so i probably won't try out your mixer any time soon, but if i wasn't happy with my current sollutions, i'd actually try this one out.

ps: this is not an endorsement. I haven't tried this mixer. The only thing i'm saying is that at least this mixer didn't fall for the most obvious pitfalls, which is already a big plus.
1338  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Help]Mobile wallet on: August 20, 2020, 12:29:28 PM
Electrum is defenately a good candidate, however, i think there's a little misunderstanding from the OP's side:

Those wallets you listed are all HD wallets, addresses get derived from a master key, each time an old address gets used, a new one gets derived (actually, most of these wallets pre-derive a certain amount of addresses beforehand). However, these wallets do not delete the previous private keys/public keys/addresses once they're used. You can keep on using the same address, your wallet should still be able to sign transactions and messages funding/using previous addresses.

I quickly installed coinomi, created a testnet wallet, funded the first address, created a second address, then tried to sign a message using the first address, and it works like a charm. PS: i'm not a big fan of coinomi, i was just testing it out really quick.
1339  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: User Promoting Double Spend suspicious tool on: August 19, 2020, 05:37:48 AM
It's a tool that scams the scammer. I don't agree with this behaviour, but I do have to say there's some poetic justice here.

I'd chuckle if somebody came to the forum explaining how they installed malware because they tried to scam an honest seller.

That being said: good job, let's tag the person who's uploading this crap
