1361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetical Idea on Most SECURE Undetectable Portable Anonymous Bitcoin Wallet on: March 18, 2012, 09:23:19 PM
The way it would work is if the private key existed only in an individual's mind, but not via memorization. The kicker is that he/she would have the private key instilled in a subconscious portion of the brain via hypnosis.

silk road much?
1362  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: March 16, 2012, 06:27:03 PM
I just tried the latest changes (0.42, straight from the source tree)
and can confirm that recovery from seed is OK for me now!

Thanks.

Good. please note that this isn not the final 0.42 version.
if you encounter bugs, do 'git pull' to update your version
1363  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: March 15, 2012, 01:33:49 PM
Ahhh... so simple.

Why is this not listed in Readme or RELEASE-NOTES or in "electrum help"?

I feel embarrassed and at the same time i am wasting your time : )

Thanks for super fast answer!

well, it was described here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum#Multiple_wallets
but I agree, this help page should be listed in the readme
1364  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: March 15, 2012, 01:21:51 PM
Is there any .ini file or is there any parameter command for selecting "electrum.dat" location?

I tried typing "electrum.exe help" into Command Prompt, but i didn't find any suitable parameter.

I'd like to create portable electrum wallet on my usb stick. I'd like to force electrum to first check root folder (where the electrum.exe file is located) for "electrum.dat" file.

Thanks.

you could use the -w parameter:

electrum -w /usb/path/wallet

1365  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Stratum] Overlay network protocol over Bitcoin on: March 15, 2012, 12:49:22 PM
I think slush doesn't have much time. Anyway, I'll pick up the slack. I'm working off slush's original proposal, but need to make some design decisions in coordination with ThomasV.

Genjix, can be more specific where and why you needed to decide something? Afaik the protocol is fully covered. I read your proposal (https://bitcoinconsultancy.com/wiki/Intersango/Overnet) and I think there are many things to discussion. Namely - why you choose to not follow json-rpc specification? I'm really missing "id". Also variables "method" and "result" together don't sound clear.

Btw after a while, I'm back in the project. Expect some progress in git repository in following days.

Please do not consider the current syntax as a conscious choice; we just needed to start with something concrete.
Genjix asked me to describe what information is needed by the client, and your document does not include that. This is why I wrote this specification.

Please feel free to suggest improvements concerning the syntax & protocol. For example, we can use an "id" field if you think it is better.
Again, I did not make the conscious choice not to use an "id" field; I was focusing on something else. I was focusing on the specification of the services

1366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover wallet backup without downloading whole block chain on: March 15, 2012, 11:01:19 AM
*I read somewhere that Bitcoin 0.6 can export keys using the command line. See http://keepyourassets.net/2011/12/23/1551/
there is also use a tool called pywallet that does it
*to import keys in Electrum: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum#Export_and_import_addresses
1367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to recover wallet backup without downloading whole block chain on: March 15, 2012, 09:19:10 AM
1. export all your private keys
2. create an Electrum wallet
3. import your keys there
1368  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: the blockchain is the cloud on: March 14, 2012, 09:38:23 AM
I need a good excuse to look at the source code, so I might take a stab at that if I get a little off time.
that would be fantastic

I have no command-line window. I couldn't spend much time to see how to enable it, sorry.

However in the meantime I did get some good news: using the mnemonic works!
 just not the seed. strange.

you are right, there is a bug here.
Actually I never use the hexadecimal seed (I always use the mnemonic), this is the reasonwhy I did not notice this.
I will fix it.
1371  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: March 13, 2012, 01:41:16 PM
Hi, I just found out and tried Electrum today, and i really love it!
To hell with the blockchain download! Smiley

I am having an issue though.
I am testing the wallet recovery feature (from seed) but it seems to do nothing for me...
The client just exits (without even displaying the main GUI) after I input my seed.

Tried with both 0.40a and 0.41. on win XP.

What's going on? Should I change the gap limit to something else than 5?

no, you do not need to change the gap unless you changed it during the normal use of the wallet.
do you get a message from the command line window? what does it say?
1372  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: the blockchain is the cloud on: March 13, 2012, 09:13:56 AM
I love that electrum can be used as a simple text only client (something I need) without needing to have a long running process there. The one thing I couldn't immediately do (though I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to fix if not yet supported) is being able to import public addresses to monitor, without having to also store their priv keys.

Did I just miss the way to do this?

no, you did not miss the way to do it :-)
ovidiusoft was willing to implement monitored addresses, but I think he's been too busy lately.
for the moment I am concentrating on ithe client/server protocol.

there is no influx of money into Bitcoin

how about an influx of money into the US dollar?
1374  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: twelve words on: March 13, 2012, 06:41:33 AM
thanks to this feature of Electrum, it is now cited in Forbes:

oh, and the 2012 official buzzword to say this is "Brainwallet"
1375  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: the blockchain is the cloud on: March 12, 2012, 06:08:04 PM
the lock icon is a svg, while other icons are png; this might have to do with it.
1376  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: the blockchain is the cloud on: March 12, 2012, 09:27:57 AM
Hello,

I've been using Electrum for few weeks now and it is my favorite desktop wallet! I'd like to thank developers for this great peace of software!

I have few questions if someone can help me out:
thanks! I will try to help you.

1. i don't understand why new addresses automatically appear in "Receive" tab.
your wallet generates new addresses everytime one of the last five addresses of its list is used.
this in order to ensure that all instances of a given wallet are synchronized.
(you can increase this parameter if you think that 5 in not enough, by editing the wallet file.)

2. Is it normal that "description" string (while sending BTCs) does not become "label" string in "Contacts" tab?
Official client works this way and I quite like that feature.
Problems occur when a given address is used in several transactions.
However, we could display a the description as "default label" for adresses that have no label. would that suit your need?

3. Why there is no icon for "password" in bottom right corner (XP port)? I see one in Ubuntu.
this is probably a bug.
can you post a screenshot?
also, do you use the binary version, or the python source?
Quote

4. Is there any plan for OSX version? That would be great!
I believe that the python source code can be used on OSX. please share your experience if you have tried and encountered problems.

@ThomasV: will this new feature allow 2 or more Electrum clients to be open at the same time and also to be used at the same time or would that cause problems?
it is not a new feature, it has been there for a long time.
yes, you can open multiple clients at the same time. you can open the same wallet on different computers, or different wallets on the same computer.

1377  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: create btc-address + key in only PHP ? on: March 12, 2012, 09:12:40 AM
hi.

how can i generate a valid address + key in PHP without any extra tools?

so that i can save the adress+key on the server and later import these into "Armory"

i want a website to receive BTC without actually steadily connecting to a bitcoind.

thanks for any directions!

you should not generate private keys on your server, that's not safe.
with Electrum, you can generate new Bitcoin addresses without storing private keys on your server.
This is possible because it uses a "type 2" deterministic wallet, where all your addresses are generated from a public master key.
if an attacker get access to the public master key, they can know the addresses that you use, but they cannot steal your coins.
see this demo: http://ecdsa.org/remote.php

1378  Other / Meta / Re: People paid by banking elite to troll this Forum? on: March 12, 2012, 08:28:47 AM
I work for HSBC and I have been told that I would be fired if I did not downplay Bitcoin in every way and detract from its usefulness. My bosses were very clear on that point. They said that even after I was fired, if I used Bitcoin that my life would be "difficult" after.

I'm really scared.

I am sorry if you got scared; this was not our intention, really.
By "difficult", we meant that you would probably have difficulties finding commerces where you can actually spend your Bitcoins.
There was nothing more than that in that sentence. Really.
BTW, we have been very satisfied with your work so far, and we have absolutely no reason to fire you.
Please relax and keep up with the good work.

sincerely,

Tom W.
