so whats the mining like on eth...
suppose I have 15 gpu's  280x's and 7970's

can I expect to do well mining this?

I think that would get you like 6 eth per day give or take.

Huge premine and not too much else. I am not going to get near this, but goodluck.
144  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why is gambling so addicting? on: March 02, 2016, 01:42:39 AM
you don't have to work hard to get money, you jsut need luck, and it's usually 2 clicks only, so it's very fast, that's why people love gambling, you just need to have luck

Addiction will only starts if the luck is always on your side, that is the time you dont want to stop coz you will think that the luck is always on your side
No that is not 100% true my friend, when you loose bets you get highly tempered and you want to win that amount back desperately. That is where addiction actually starts and you start loosing money.

Yeah, that is going on tilt. Many strong players have been destroyed by tilt. It does not happen to everyone though. I have known people that made a few bets at the casino, and lost. They never went back. I wish I could say the same about myself  Undecided

I just got 6 x R9 280x Sapphire GPUs. Should I use Windows or Ubuntu for mining? I've never used Ubuntu but I'll learn if it has major benefits.

I did not see any major difference in Windows, or Ubuntu when it comes to hashrate.
146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Quick survey for a school project: How do you use Bitcoin? on: February 26, 2016, 04:06:23 PM
I did the survey, I hope you do well in your project. We need more BTC users in French speaking areas(I am assuming you speak french from the survey). Bonne Chance!

edit: To the poster above. The survey is in English, it is just on the French surveymonkey.
147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Theoretically there will be exactly no bitcoins in the future. on: February 25, 2016, 04:32:55 PM
One day it might be a problem, but probably not the problem of our generation. Still statistically that says bitcoin cannot survive.
Here we go again. I don't understand why people worry about potential problems that won't happen in their lifetime. Bitcoin has many other problems that need addressing right now and in the foreseeable future. This is not something that we should be worried about right now, especially not when the reward per block is still high. Technically even if only 1 Bitcoin existed it could be users by millions of people due to it being very divisible.

I think in this worst case scenario, even that one last Bitcoin could be hard-forked to make more than 8 places after decimal right? If I remember correct what I read about the early days of Bitcoin there were not even 8 decimal places?

Edit:

I dug this up from old post. It seems that it was always 8 decimal places, but the client only showed/registered 2.

Hey,

So there is another thread asking about bc and decimal places. It is stated that the client(s) only show 2 decimal places, but there are 8 in total. Now, working on stuff, I find that it would be nice if I could transfer at least 4 decimals precision, but the full 8 would be great.

Looking at the code it seems simple enough to remove the rounding from bitcoind, but what about the receiving side? If it's a non UI client, then it will show everything, but would I be making things overly confusing for GUI clients?

Is there any shortcoming in me patching my client to handle full precision?
148  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do you consider trading as gambling? on: February 25, 2016, 04:08:08 PM
Yes there is a lot of gamble in trading.
One diference is that if one is patient his losses from bad trade can be undone.
Some aspects of trading gives you more edge than in pure gamble but still,
everything is based upon a chance and luck.

Unless you are heavily extended on margin. If you wait too long then, you get liquidated.
149  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mixers, anonymisers and bitcoin obfuscators on: February 25, 2016, 03:48:36 PM
Selling to people on Localbitcoins is even more dangerous than providing your ID to somewhat 'legitimate' online exchanges in my honest opinion. You are letting random people see your face and possibly knowing the vicinity where you live. What about following you home and figuring out a way to kidnap or coerce you into giving them your big stash of coins? As the guy above me said when you go off the Internet your anonymity is gone immediately.

I more meant locally to friends and family. But localbitcoins would work too.

If you don't want your face to be seen, wear a baseball hat and shades, or get extreme and use stage makeup or a mask. Follow you home? Just don't let anyone follow you home. If you are that worried about it just use public transportation and ride all over the city before being sure no one is following you and finally go home. All I'm saying is there are ways to sell your BTC without giving up your identity, even if you have to jump through hoops to do it.
150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mixers, anonymisers and bitcoin obfuscators on: February 25, 2016, 03:22:39 PM
they are used to help anonymize the criminals, lol. in that case, they will be able to earn more money for the better service for those criminals. lmao.

That is nonsense.. I have never committed any crimes and I am using it. I even feel so strongly about it that I signed up for one of the biggest and reputable mixer's

signature campaigns. Your privacy is your business... If you use cash, you have the same anonymity as with the use of any mixer service.  If the authorities wants to

trace criminals, who use mixer service, they only need to follow the rules of the game and subpoena these services for the information.

I do agree that using a mixer increases your anonymity but what happens when you want to exchange some of your bitcoins into fiat? You need to provide your ID to the exchanges to get out your cash. It doesn't make sense to me to bother with mixers unless you send a fraction of your stash through a mixer to conceal your main wallet but this is a different story. I guess if it makes you happy and more secure online more power to you mate.

Or you could just sell your recently mixed coins locally for cash. You do not need to provide an ID for that.
151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To Secure Big BTC amounts (>50k) one should run 1. own Node, 2. ...? on: February 25, 2016, 03:14:16 PM
Big amounts and small amounts are kept safe in the same way.
If you make yourself a good number of paper wallets and fill them with random amounts, it's already a good start.
If you own a lot of BTC, you can afford the best hardware wallet for the daily expenses.

I suggest you read (a lot) more on this subject, since your questions show that you are complete newbie.

Create a wallet on an OFFLINE COMPUTER.

Destroy hard drive it was created on...
This seems a little extreme to me. I don't see the need to "destroy" everything. Unless you are worried about someone kicking in your door and stealing all your hardware, and if so....you have other issues that need to be addressed.

Actually any deleted file in normal ways is still there on HDD for quite some time and somebody can retrieve it if he has access to the computer.
However, nowadays there are virtual computers you can make, use, then destroy and it's just fine.
Of you can just wipe the free space after deleting the files.

I know that erased data can be recovered. But someone needs access to the hardware to recover it. If you use a offline computer that you decide to never give online access again, I do not see the need to physically destroy anything. I really doubt someone is going to kick in my door and say "give me all your hard-drives". And if they do......lets just say I have something waiting for them.

The best bet would be to make a faridi cage, create in there and destroy everything before leaving(use a Rasp-pi it's cheap) except the ENCRYPTED private key and your public key.   Make copies. Write down the pass, never type it onto a computer.

This seems a little extreme to me. I don't see the need to "destroy" everything. Unless you are worried about someone kicking in your door and stealing all your hardware, and if so....you have other issues that need to be addressed.
153  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is Martingale Profitable ??? on: February 25, 2016, 02:57:17 PM
it can be profitable if you're lucky and know when to stop. most of the time it is not profitable though.

It is profitable for the casino where you play at because you will lose all your money.  Smiley

I've made something like 400k rolls 'martingaling', could lose 22 in a row, if I recall correctly, didn't bust, but with so many rolls the probability of busting is already quite high.

I got 26 losses in a row once. granted it happened on a questionable site (999dice). but I still think that's possible. lost about 1.5BTC (iirc) that I got from the same site.

I think the record on just-dice was 34 losses at 49.5%. Technically, you could have infinite losses, but this is not very probable.
154  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do you consider trading as gambling? on: February 25, 2016, 02:33:15 PM
I used to not think so, or at least told myself it was different. Recently I started trading using margin, and I have to say it is very much like gambling. If you make the wrong choice you can lose most of your stack and get margin-called. This seems much more like gambling, and I can't argue with myself otherwise.
155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mixers, anonymisers and bitcoin obfuscators on: February 25, 2016, 02:26:09 PM
I use a mixer sometimes, and I do not use Bitcoin for any illegal purposes. Sometimes I just like to feel like there is no body watching/following my transactions. I guess I may be a little paranoid, but I do not think I am the only one that does the same.
156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think about Bitcoin Payments on Steam? on: February 24, 2016, 11:27:25 AM
It will be a good thing if they decided to use BTC for their trading card market. Currently with most new games you get a few trading cards that you can sell for a few pennies. If this switched to bitcoin it would be good because people could more easily buy and sell micro amounts.

What is this "method" that he bought from you? Could you explain it a little better? Also, what is his username here?
158  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to motivate women to use Bitcoin? on: February 22, 2016, 02:18:18 PM
First i explain the dynamics of SHA-256. After that, I start explaining how the blockchain secures against fraud. Finally, I stop talking because I realize she walked away after my first sentence .

Still looking for a better solution.

160  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [Unmoderated KRYPTON (KR$) THREAD on: February 20, 2016, 04:03:38 AM
This is a perfect example of how to kill a coin with promise before it even gets going. The pool has 2 miners, and the difficulty is like 13 or something.

Her premine AFTER the swap is over 5,000,000 coins. There are only 5760 coins created each day. Therefore, it will take 868 days of all coins mined just to catch up with her. She has posted no info about what she will do once she sells the premine for BTC.

Super greedy, and I really hope no one loses too much on this while she fills her pockets with their BTC.

edit: I just realized my math was off. My math was at 4 coin/ minute. It is actually 1 coin per minute

so 1440 coin per day
5,000,000 + coins premined to sell for btc

5,000,000 /1440 = 3472.2 days of ALL coins mined just to catch up to her premine
