141  Other / Meta / Re: Requirement - A Wallet Address in Every Signature on: June 30, 2011, 07:51:37 PM
I had a donation address in my sig for a day or so, then realized that it was a waste of space because a) I honesty never expect to get any funds that way, and b) I don't post with the intent of acquiring bitcoin. I also think that having an address is a passive way of begging. Would you have a signature on some other forum saying, "Find this helpful, donate to my pay pal account!"

It's not like you'd go on Tom's Hardware and expect to get people to "donate" for your hardware suggestions and tips when there are many others with the same information.
142  Other / Meta / Re: Images in signatures on: June 30, 2011, 07:42:34 PM
I wish there was a way to disable images in signatures, or at least choose to ignore certain ones (I'm looking at you GOXED face guy). I might look into greesemonkey/user scripts to accomplish this in the future.

It's easy to block annoying ones with Adblock Plus.

You just took away all my fun of learning how to make user scripts for greesmonkey  Grin. Or you just saved me a bunch of time and headache, since javascript is a pain.

That is very close to me but wow what a lot of scratch!

not considering that they're selling for up to $1300 on ebay.

When has ebay ever had decently priced graphic cards? People are reselling $110 5830's for $160+. I can find new cards for much cheaper on newegg, like 5850's and 6870, by $30+ USD.

After browsing the cards on ebay, I remembered why I hate that place.
145  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Thought for cooling multiple cards... on: June 30, 2011, 06:56:17 PM
I don't think you quite understand how an exducer-type of fan works Smiley  If you cut a hole in the end of the card and blow air into it, it's just going to get blown back out.

Exactly. Cards are designed by engineers who know their stuff.

You should be focusing on getting the most hot air out of the area of the graphic cards instead of modifying the cards themselves.

Here, this one will log you out of a regular gmail account. <img src="https://mail.google.com/mail/?logout&hl=en" />
I decided to remove it so everybody doesn't get mad at me.

Time to start to troll other forums with that as the sig image.  Grin

But in all seriousness, I'm surprised Google falls for this. I always imagined they were mostly on top of web design best practices and security.
147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We need a standard template for "I was hacked" threads on: June 30, 2011, 06:10:54 AM
I have a suggested method to make this very easy:

1. Write post to notepad.
2. Print completed post.
3. File printed post in file #13 (aka Trash Can)
4. Exit notepad. Be sure to click "don't save" when exiting.

I feel like most "I was hacked" posts are either trolls or people who made an obvious mistake and don't want to fess up to it (i.e. downloading a miner promising 3 million MH/s). And what the hell are we supposed to do when/if we find said hacker? Tell them to give it back (lol)?

The P4 should be fine to use, but everything else is going to be a bust, minus hdd and cd-rom like you said. Luckily, there's a bunch of LGA775 mobos around with PCI-E buses that should be cheap enough for mining.
149  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: New Miner... possible functionality on: June 30, 2011, 02:53:16 AM
Would java even be a good language for a miner since it's an interpreted one (basically executing everything twice)? Would this cause lower hash rates since code will be ran inefficiently?

Note: I hate java and may be a little biased against it. C# for life.
150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Quick Market Analysis on: June 30, 2011, 02:40:45 AM
I don't think miners are happy with the price being so low. The difficulty increased by 50%, and the market still hasn't changed. A lot of miners are holding on BTC hoping that price will follow the difficulty since mining profitability has effectively halved.

Bankers are evil alright, but it's still your lawfully elected representatives that take the cake.

Welcome to America, where taking bribes is a government job.
152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: YOU BASTARDS YOU MADE ME KILL KENNY(NVIDIA) on: June 30, 2011, 02:33:45 AM
I used to by all nvidia until January-ish, when I was in the market for a new gaming card. I got "lucky" and decided to get an ATI since the 5850's were out performing the GTX260 for a sightly lower price. A few months later, I started to mine BTC and realized how big that decision was. Now I pretty much have a crossfire system paid off because of that.

Good article. Have you tried posting it to the reddit bitcoin section?
154  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wikileaks accepting bitcoin is a big deal on: June 29, 2011, 10:47:38 PM
Very smart move on their part, imo. Bitcoin does seem like something they'd be all for, and they made a few thousand from donations already.
155  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GUIMiner setup - Please help on: June 29, 2011, 09:30:55 PM
I suggest using a different worker-name for each card, since it's way easier to spot problems that way. If you had them all using the same worker-name, and you were getting 200mh/s lower speeds than expected then it would be really had to spot which card is causing the problems from the pool website.
156  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anybody else getting slaughtered by this latest difficulty? on: June 29, 2011, 09:27:48 PM
Hi guys,
I saw this post and I thought that I should share my experiences as a miner.

In the early days,I did this solo for 3wks b4 realising that the smarter option 4 me is to mine in a pool.
Shortly after I added my laptop in addition to my PC (Has Radeon Hd 4670 GPU will be upgraded soon to radeon HD 6950 GPU) during the day to boost production to 0.06btc per day then. This was achieved by running my PC for 14hrs a day (cant do 24/7 due to overheating issues and high electric rates in my area) alongside my laptop (MBP mid 2010 with Nvidia GT330M GPU) during the day.

This sounds strange as during the day my elec usage combined is only 190W with 2 computers combined (140W total for my desktop and 50W for laptop with GPU at full load but CPU idle) which was much lower than expected. This helps keep elec cots under control and stop those overheating issues as well.

But the difference is at night,I shut off my PC but keep my laptop to maximise my chances of getting a small trickle of btc whilst eliminating excess power use at night (by switching off everything to do with PC and eliminating wall vampires-a term used by eco conscious ppl to describe appliances that draw power when seemingly 'off'.)

I then make sure the laptop is run from the mains (so that it doesn't waste energy charging up the battery as well as GPU mining) then put the screen to sleep and HDD to idle mode to save about 12Watts of power.

This may sound strange as a strategy but its effective at keeping my elec bill low while getting those much valued btc (so I still make more than I pay for the elec this way as the Pcs hard work compensates for its power use and hte laptop pays for itself, sort of)

If u guys can help me build a low cost solar power system where it consists of a low cost solar panel that can charge the dep cycle batt in garden during the day then at night run laptop from inverter that way i run on free elec overnight and when early morning comes,3 hrs on laptops batt while solar generator is charging the deep cycle batt so that reduce the burden on mains elec then.

Does this sound stupid to u guys or is it an interesting approach to the problem?

Your "approach", for lack of better terms, is stupid. What's the point of having GPU mining systems that are not running 24/7 while electricity is cheaper than the BTC generated? The whole point of having dedicated mining machines is to have maximum up-time, which you are effectively destroying. Also, mining with a Laptop GPU is just as bad as mining with a CPU, since their hashing power is 10x less than a graphics card. So money put into using that to mine is probably being lost due to electricity costs.
157  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cluster or not on: June 29, 2011, 04:28:55 PM
Be weary about string attached to "free" electricity. Apartments/housing usually have a maximum before they'll charge you (15 computers will do the trick to hit that), and if you're getting it from your place of work, you'll get fired or disciplined if they find out.
158  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some Bitcoin Calculations on: June 29, 2011, 12:37:34 AM
There is a set number of bitcoins, but there is also a system that limits how many bitcoins/hour are given out (difficulty). The more miners there are online, the harder it gets to generate bitcoins. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty
159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trading so slow and flat = boredom on: June 29, 2011, 12:31:54 AM
I don't blame the miners for not wanting to sell at current prices, since the difficulty did slash all mining nearly in half.
160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: eBay removing Bitcoin listings... on: June 29, 2011, 12:30:56 AM
Quote
With Bitcoin transfers, you *do* have proof of shipment, namely the transaction record on Block Explorer

You could say the same thing about World of Warcraft gold, but who is really going to take the time to try to verify all that.

With the transaction record, it still doesn't really prove if they got it. They could easily say that's not the address the supplied you and chat logs/emails aren't reliable proof, since text is quite easily altered with some programs, Notepad for example. There isn't a renowned company like UPS/FedEX/USPS that is verifying the shipment, so in the end, there's really no solid proof except for your word vs the buyers, which is never a winning situation since ebay is all about buyer protection.
