141  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io violated their own self exclose license terms. on: December 09, 2018, 05:23:39 AM
Don't take offense, but you have to take some responsibility here.

Unfortunately, I am going to side with the casino. We have seen this countless times. Here's the craziest one of them all. A member of the bitcointalk forum signed up at betbit.com. right after signing up, he requested to close his account due to gambling addiction. Ok, we closed his account. He immediately used the password recovery tool to temporarily get his access back. We then closed it again. He made another account with a different email and made a deposit, played, and immediately emailed us saying that we owe him his funds back due to this technicality. This was an intentional attempt to scam the casino in bad faith. I will not disclose this player's info due to keeping the terms and conditions of the player's rights regardless of his actions.

Then the player proceeded to threaten us by posting this info everywhere.. Lawyers etc. I could not believe this attempt to extort us.

On the other hand, I do believe that the casinos should close accounts when requested. Also, I think that the player should also do their part as well, and not use the technicality as a means of actiing on bad faith.
142  Other / Meta / Re: Posting in forums with moderators who give no smerit? Solutions? on: December 09, 2018, 12:32:57 AM
Yup, looks like threw coal on the fire. my bad.

The little smerit I have given out does seem to be the higher members. Just seems like the engagement and quality is higher.

@suchmoon

After this thread, I'm keenly aware:
  • The threshold of merit is such that I'm lucky for the merit I do have.
  • Roles of moderators are independent of smerit (which I will not make a similar post, again.) It does make sense though. Fighting spam and quality control are two distinct roles.
  • Qualifying threshold higher than I originally thought.
  • Don't worry about it.

@LoyceV

I'll keep my eye out. I thought for sure that those would meet minimum expectations. Thank you.
143  Other / Serious discussion / Re: 51% attack vulnerability could be more possible than ever, here's why. on: December 08, 2018, 07:20:59 PM
More than ever? Have you forget that GHash pool which was popular in past had more than 50% hashrate and they could launch attack anytime they want. They also could get away with non-obvious attack such as intentionally don't included transaction in a block.
...

Nope, I did not know that. I don't think anyone would seriously do this. BUT.. the situation is different becuase now the game is relative hashing power, where there is unused hashing power sitting on the sidelines. This is a new dynamic right?
144  Other / Serious discussion / 51% attack vulnerability could be more possible than ever, here's why. on: December 08, 2018, 06:17:41 PM
It occurred to me these last few days, that since the cost of mining is going down many mining facilities are turning off their mining equipment. Makes sense, the cost of the electricity is greater than the profit mining. A no-brainer. So, if we look at the distribution of the mining factions below:

From blockchain.com, url on the image.

Let's say all of them reduce their hash rate proportionally. That seems like a sensible thing to do. Now if the hash rate gets low enough, any of these groups (more likely 2 of them are needed) could turn on ALL of their hashing power and go for the 51% unexpectantly. What's to stop BTC.com and an unknown hash source from jumping in and exploiting the relative increase in cost of mining BTC? How could the other miners react fast enough? Look below and see the hash rate decrease from 60TH/s down to about 35 TH/s. Just by eyeballing this it starts to seem like a real possibility in the 15-20TH/s region?

Makes me wonder if some miners have already done the math. lol
145  Other / Meta / Re: Posting in forums with moderators who give no smerit? Solutions? on: December 08, 2018, 05:40:53 PM
.....
I'll make you a deal acarli: if you (and this offer is only valid for you) post links to 10 unmerited good posts in this topic, I'll merit them if I agree. And I'll comment on the "why". When you post the links, please quote (the relevant part of) this post so I receive a notification.

Thank you LoyceV. I've only three so far. I wasn't quite sure if you meant any other threads in the "meta" forum. I'll go with this specific topic. So far, I would give merit tp 2 posts for sure, and a solid maybe on the third.

Here they are:

(1) cryptohunter : firstly he gives good quality information that is not readily obvious. He showed he made an effort and spent time formulating his post. I also searched for duplicate content, just to make sure you guys werent' pulling my leg. lol

He wrote:
.......
You are indeed correct. However the real fault lies with the myriads of spammers and bots and puppet accounts because they make it far more difficult to locate good posters.

This will eventually be solved meanwhile don't worry too much about merit. If you are determined to get optimal recognition for good posts (in terms of merit) you will need to use the stats provided on meta to locate the best boards to post on. Sadly for you the fact is the top 0.02% of merit receivers cycle over 50% of their merit between them at this time. I calculated that if you were to remove merits given by the top 300 to the top 200 and removed all merits given in this meta sub board most people (except a handful) would only have got max 100/150 merits. Most of the top 200 saw reductions in the 50% - 75% range (that was without subtracting merits given on the meta sub board. With that you could be looking at reductions up to 95%.

So if you have got even say 10 merits and none from the meta board (except what I just gave you for noticing this and making a relevant post here) then you are doing very well actually.

If you are a good poster you will eventually get known on the basis of your work here and I would then not worry about the rankings and merits too much.

On top of all of that there is serious gaming going on. There was a case of a legend just giving 50 merits each to 2 other accounts for nearly identical post (not really deserving of any merit) when analysed all 3 shared an eth addy so looked like highly probably alts. I would think these cases should be treated a little more harshly but merit is subjective so not really possible to police to make it fairer right now.

There does not really need to be a solution  right now because merit is working to prevent a lot of negative behaviour ( as opposed to having no merit system) and also over time once the bots, account farmers, ico spammers vanish it will be easier to locate your posts and you would hope the merit system will balance out. I have suggested a few alternatives but nobody really liked them.

Again he engaged with other's comments. This shows me he actually read the responses and is engaging. Doesn't that generall add value to the forum? I think so. Now the question I would have is what is the threshold for merit allocation.

(2) cryptohunter :

it is actually 100% true you can test it for yourself.

also this bunch of stats provided by r1s2g3 after I asked if he could provide

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SAi_b3umCcFJO2dMoLYjWCjNz1JhOLWrsRHhYQK-nb8/edit#gid=429409603

demonstrates the scale of the merit cycling in the tiny fraction of a percent of posters

that is without meta subsection (highly concentrated merit club) being removed. My figure estimates I think will be found to be entirely correct. You can expect some of the highest merit receivers to take a 95% hair cut.

@loyce

It only makes sense the merit back slappers club that the top 0.02 retain 50% of all their merits cycled around internally and mostly in meta

I am clearly observing merit is mostly given for simply aligning your view with others whom are active in meta and have lots of merit to give. I am seeing merit given time and time again for the voicing of opinions that are actually clearly wrong based on observable events.

Trying to conflate high merit with high value posts is incorrect.

Let me say though this is not entirely negative and I see no reason not to merit people you agree with or a friend/pal posting something you find amusing etc...... merit is for fun as well it seems. Also in meta people will almost do things you ask and you feel justified in repaying with a bit of merit.

What is wrong is to imply merit is an indication of a posts value or rather having high merit qualifies you as automatically a better post than those with less merit.

Merit is helping stop lots of negative behaviour and is fun. Therefore a positive thing.

(3) Infinixhot1996 : he ws the first to help me (the post originator) clear up the role of a moderator. I found this valuable and appreciated the clarification. So I'd say he's damn close to merit worth regardless of the other posters echoing the same.

The duty of moderators on each"board" is to clean up that board/section and try and keep it as sane as possible, through deleting low content and spam posts or topics
It's not their duty to hand out merits, thats not to say they dont/do,as a matter of fact it's not anyone's duty to hand out Smerits except probably the merit sources which to an extent is their duty, and they'll only do so to worthy posts.

With or without merits,or merit giving mods or members, that definitely shouldn't deter you from coming up with the quality stuff you claim you want to, merit is just an addition,as our major purpose here is to discuss(sensibly through quality topics)
Be careful of the section you'll post your topic, otherwise it definitely may not even merits but get reported for being a spamfest

(3)

Sadly for you the fact is the top 0.02% of merit receivers cycle over 50% of their merit between them at this time.
You keep posting this as if it's a bad thing Tongue Quality posts deserve Merit, and the same posters have sMerit to give. It makes perfect sense that a large share of all merit goes around in a small number of users.

I'll make you a deal acarli: if you (and this offer is only valid for you) post links to 10 unmerited good posts in this topic, I'll merit them if I agree. And I'll comment on the "why". When you post the links, please quote (the relevant part of) this post so I receive a notification.

If anyone wants to use the Bogap.com affiliate software to launch your affiliate marketing effort for your site you are making then contact admin @ bogap.com. Ask for Max. They might be able to actually manage the affiliates for a small percentage.
147  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Casinos with instant deposits on: December 08, 2018, 01:01:13 AM
Try the Betbit.com Sportsbook and Casino , it has instant deposits and withdrawals. The only exception is if you choose a bonus with a wagering requirement. , which is not by default. You have to ask for it. Deposits can be made with almost all crypto currencies. they are converted to mBTC in game play. You can withdraw from your account to any crypto currency. Also, there is no minimum wagering requirement on your initial bonus.

When you deposit the funds go in to your casino account. It takes 2 confirmations. If you wanted to make a sports wager then you have to transfer the funds to your sportsbook account.

I didn't know that. That was the "ah ha " one for me. Thank you for that. I didn't know that they help so much. If they didn't have faith then they would be dumping as well.
149  Other / Meta / Re: Posting in forums with moderators who give no smerit? Solutions? on: December 07, 2018, 08:53:38 PM
First of all, mods aren't responsible for giving out merits--the community as a whole is.  Second, whether you earn merits or not depends on basically two factors, 1) Whether your post is good or not, and 2) Your post has to be seen by someone with sMerits to give.

You're fortunate to have gotten as many merits as you have.  Many members with your rank and post count have gotten ZERO merits, and they're not likely to earn any for the rest of their miserable careers on bitcointalk.  It's not supposed to be easy to earn merits; that's the whole point of the system.  If it was easy, it wouldn't prevent shitposters from ranking up and the whole system would be useless.

Thank you for the clarification. I haven't been around here enough to fully understand the roles of moderators. Admittedly, in the back of my mind maybe I want to be "validated". lol. I'll work on that.

You have become quite synonymous to making post that relates to merit or smerit
..
Could your interest be a merit hunt in disguise?
..

I strongly disagree with you on that one. Check out my posts.
150  Other / Meta / Posting in forums with moderators who give no smerit? Solutions? on: December 07, 2018, 08:03:58 PM
Hey guys. This is not a bashing post. I was thinking about some cool bitcoin topics and checked out the forums were I could post. Sometimes I like to spend some time making an awesome post. As you know it takes a while to write a quality post that will encourage quality engagement from other users. I noticed that on quite a few forums the moderators do not give out insignificant amounts of smerit. I will certainly post regardless, but I thought that it is discouraging to see so many threads that are 300+ replies but no smerits assigned, not even in any of the threads.

What do you guys think is a solution?

152  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am a loser. My only question now is, how do I tell my wife on: December 07, 2018, 05:20:35 PM
It is impossible to mortgage the house without your wife knowing about it unless you falsified her signature or got a shady deal from the bank. If you did get a mortgage, then you'd better fess up incase you drop dead and they repossess the house

That's exactly what I mentioned previously. There's no way he could have done it without his wife's consent. Even if the house is in the husband's name, you can't mortgage the house if the person is married without wife's consent.
153  Economy / Speculation / Re: What Is Guarantee For Increasing BTC Price? on: December 07, 2018, 05:14:14 PM
No guarantee for bitcoin price increasing. Two possibilities, increasing and decreasing but expert assures that price will be below $1800 in next year.

I'll start rebuying at 2k or close to it.I'm long-term bullish, but am looking forward to picking up some cheap BTC. I realize that the sudden drop is a big hit to most. I did not sell high, but trying to time the market by picking up more.
154  Other / Serious discussion / Re: U.S. Hydrogen Economy - A requirement for a sustainable future on: December 07, 2018, 03:05:59 AM
California had a big push on hydrogen fueled cars. IMO I think the reason it never quite took off despite the media's best efforts were two fold. First, the logistics of delivering hydrogen to existing gas stations. They don't have the right equipment, not used to doing it etc. The second and probably the most damning reason is because the range of a hydrogen fuel cell car is very low. At the time they were around 50 miles. That doesn't work.

The best scenario has a central station that converts H to electricity, and send that to electric vehicles.

Here's an article on why hydrogen fuel cell cars can not compete with  electric cars:

https://energypost.eu/hydrogen-fuel-cell-cars-competitive-hydrogen-fuel-cell-expert/

Main points:
Quote
  • You cannot fill up like you do with gasoline or diesel. It is actually pretty ridiculous how hard it is to fill up a HFC powered car
  • You won’t even go 100 miles on current tech hydrogen tanks that are still safe to carry around in a car
  • Fuel cells wear out crazy fast and are hard to regenerate
  • Hydrogen as a fuel is incredibly hard to make and distribute with acceptably low losses

I was wrong. 100 miles is better than what I estimated. Yup. forget h fuel cell cars. Electric is the dominant tech.
155  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Genisis block and hidden messages on: December 07, 2018, 02:15:50 AM
Interesting, I participated in the Block Collider ICO (Don't ask how that went). During the ICO process, we could add a message to the genesis block. I thought that was pretty cool. Luckily, I had the opportunity to be able to place a few messages. I gave each family member the assignment to immortalize a phrase on a genesis blockchain, which I thought was going to be the greatest thing of all time.

The result? My goofball kids and wife wrote funny lines about our family. I could probably dig them up. Crazy times.
156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am a loser. My only question now is, how do I tell my wife on: December 06, 2018, 08:22:04 PM
I am very surprised that the bank allowed you to mortgage your house without your wife's consent. Regardless of whos name on the title, the wife needs consent.

I hope this is not a true story, if it is you are screwed (No offense intended, just pointing it out). About your wife, I would let her know as soon as possible and let her participate in your next move.

I feel for you. I really do. At the apex of the hype, I had the impulse to do it. Fortunately, I stayed the course. There's an adage that I found accurate, which is be greedy when others are fearful, and fearful when other's are greedy.

Best of luck to you.
157  Other / Serious discussion / The Rap genre is the last bastion of misogyny that no one talks about. on: December 05, 2018, 06:25:41 PM
Today it occurred to me that there are two glaring political / media hypocracies that no one is talking about. This kind of demonstrates how the media ignores certain demographics on purpose.
Here they are:
(1) Rap music. Don't get me wrong. I love rap music. I always have. Eminem, T, Snoop, Luda, Drake, Lil Wayne, and countless others. The question I have, is why doesn't the media harp on them? After all, they go after everyone in the public who steps out of line. Morgan Freeman, James Franco, chef Mario Batali, Nick Carter, Louis C.K, Aziz Ansari, Dustin Hoffman, Richard Dreyfuss, George Takei, and the list goes on. Most of these 15-20-year-old allegations with no criminal charges or any evidence. Maybe they are true, maybe not. Due process with law enforcement should have been done before public accusations. Too sad really.

Ok, so back to rap. If women's rights and safety were paramount (which I do think is important), then why aren't rap artists being called out for the promotion of all and every form of misogyny? Personally, I have no problem with the content of rap. I think it's fun and allows me to cathartically unwind. It's fun. Even my wife thinks it fun, some of the time, lol.

Check out this video. It's about changing rap. It's made by SNL. Very funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAL0wZu4JUg

"Equal rights for that booty"

(2) Bill Clinton

In the #metoo movement, there is a legitimate increase in public awareness of sexual abuse, and it's many forms. I do agree that there does need to be  more awareness and consequences of abuse. I do think that where the movement went wrong was the public outcry of public figures without due process. the public tends to take the alleged victums side. As a father of two sons, this is concerning. Even Neil Degrasse has had unsubstantiated claims that have recently hurt his career.

Why hasn't Bill Clinton been called out for the Monica Lewinsky abuse? He was the most powerful political figure at the time. He wanted a BJ from an intern. By today's standards that is not true consent right?
158  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Binance's partnership with Chainanalysis to detect "Dirty" Coins.. on: December 04, 2018, 07:35:58 PM
If I had any merit left, I'd give it to both of you.

You make good points. Unfortunately, the ethos of crypto will be diluted when large financial institutions start tightening the grip on KYC. They are using "funding terrorism" as a tactic to justify their continued control of each citizen's financial resources.  It's inevitable that we will soon have to document the chain of BTC from the pint they were minted, or most likely some arbitrary date. A new industry will pop up and chart the chain of ownership, which will give the "man" even more resolution on what we have, where we got it, and where we spend it. Bummer, yes, but that's the world we live in. Honestly, I don't like it, but understand that in the great scheme of things our citizenry probably needs it. (Make me nauseous to say that)
159  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Red flags in ICO’s on: December 04, 2018, 02:26:16 AM
I would like to add that another important red flag is a well-balanced team. At one time Block Collider was one of my favorite ICOS at the time of launch. The tech team seemed capable, but I quickly realized that they did not have a balanced team. They had no marketing skill sets, financial skill sets, or even basic economic game theory knowledge.
They did some decent blockchain work but were quickly outpaced by the average blockchain project.
160  Other / Serious discussion / Re: A serious discussion of what's funny... or not. How comedy has changed. on: December 03, 2018, 12:51:16 AM
...

As far as films, try producing Blazing Saddles today.

What a coincidence. I was watching that today on Netflix and thinking the same exact thing. I hope that our new uber sensitive culture will give us some decent entertainment. Look at the movies that have been coming out these last few years. So bland and "PC". The Last Jedi is a perfect example.
