Off the top of my head in round numbers I would estimate:

  500K in VC investment
6000K in donations from supporters

(Valued at the time they were donated)

6 million USD total worth of donations from supporters?
14242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What Altcoins have the Highest Funding? on: May 03, 2015, 06:28:16 AM
What about NEM?  How much funding did they have from their ICO/IPO?  Over 100,000 USD?

Good question.

63 BTC from the Nem thread.
14243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Satoshi still have plans to access his coins? on: May 03, 2015, 06:25:28 AM
I was doing some research on Counterparty and thought "Why didn't Satoshi "burn" his coins if he didn't have any intention to access them again?"

Nobody has any clue about Satoshi's intentions.

He might have earned enough in real life to not require the BTCs mined early on to sustain himself - thereby not moving the coins. He might have simply lost the private keys and so the coins can't be moved. He might have died and once again the keys lost. He may have mined later on to some addresses that we don't know about and spent from there.

We simply don't know enough to make even a relatively informed guess about Satoshi's intentions. All we know for sure is that some of the early block rewards haven't been touched - that's about it.

Forget about what his intentions are.  But does Satoshi have plans to access his coins again?  What do you think?
14244  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A suggestion to the alt + bittorrent devs: PopcornTime. on: May 03, 2015, 06:14:18 AM
An alt project + PopcornTime capabilities could be big.

Quote

Netflix says piracy service Popcorn Time is a real competitor

Netflix isn't just worried about HBO — it's worried about pirates, too. In a letter to shareholders yesterday, Netflix says that piracy is one of its "biggest competitors," and notably, it specifically points to one piracy service that's caught its attention: Popcorn Time. Popcorn Time's app is meant to make pirating a movie as easy as streaming one on Netflix. The app allows you to browse through an iTunes-like catalog of movies and TV shows by their posters, select one for more information, and then start streaming it after a short buffering period. It's so streamlined that anyone should be able to just pick it up and start watching.

What Popcorn Time actually is is a pretty face for downloading torrents, an activity that's typically going to be illegal when you're looking for major films and TV shows. This form of piracy is far from a new phenomenon, but it makes torrenting a lot more accessible than it's traditionally been — and that gives Netflix reason to worry.

In particular, Netflix points to a Google Trends graph comparing the popularity of searches for Netflix, HBO, and Popcorn Time in the Netherlands. The graph shows the popularity of Popcorn Time rising sharply over the past six months, such that it's now on par with Netflix and far above HBO. Netflix calls the data "sobering." Of course, this is only in the Netherlands, which appears to be an outlier. Looking at global data, the graph is far different, with Netflix soaring far, far above Popcorn Time and HBO. Still, it's a sign that Popcorn Time is gaining prominence. Netflix is a great piracy deterrent because it's cheap and easy — but Popcorn Time is now making piracy easy, too. For Netflix, that's cause for concern.

Salty.  Cool.  Thanks.  I hope projects like that catch on.
14246  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A suggestion to the alt + bittorrent devs: PopcornTime. on: May 03, 2015, 05:52:54 AM
Interesting.. If its p2p how does it get shutdown ? Couldn't others put up a frontend aswell especially because it was open Source? Btw it's still up so what are you saying.. Create a token to inventisize uploading via compensation (fees)?

Something like that, yes.  But with a PopcornTime type of platform, users will be able to stream content (video or audio) instead of just downloading them.

So it's going to be like a P2P version of NetFlix, and with an altcoin distributed at the same time.

Hi guys. I'm wondering how much funding NEM got from its IPO/ICO.  I am trying to list all altcoins and 2.0 projects and their funding here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1045967.0
Something like 63 btc I think

Oh.  I was expecting something much more.  But I'll wait for xtester's reply.

Which altcoin project was built on bittorent?  And who are the devs?

14251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LITECOIN and DASH on: May 03, 2015, 04:08:53 AM
What LTC and Dash is better that BTC? What a joke LTC and Dash are all just numbered. Atleast bitcoin still has strong development and it will not collapse.

Actually, this is true.  But LTC and Dash days being numbered, no.  Or at least I hope not.  We need more diversity in crypto.  It's just more fun that way.

14253  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Initial Coin Distribution Importance on: May 03, 2015, 03:32:39 AM
Not that important.  Like anything, a project's team is more important, millions in funding, and the idea itself.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Look at btc, Satoshi owns fat stacks but nobody cares.

Yup.  That didn't stop it going from nothing to $230 per coin in 6 - 7 years, did it?  It's not that bad actually.

and that's why the distribution doesn't matter that much.

Yes that's what I said.

I know man.,... I just been blazing mad weed tonight so my brain keep farting.. My bad!

Nah it's cool.  You can do it again if you want.  Let's make happy little nested posts and see how long we can make it last.

You mean keep brain farting? If so its gonna smell pretty bad in here in a bit. Maybe I should twist up a fatty and call it a night.. yeep.. fatty and a massage from the wife and Im off to bed.. later dude. I'll see ya around im sure.

Stay 420 strong my fellow pot brethren.

What?  You going?  I thought you're staying.  Tell your young beautiful hot wife to let you stay on for a bit.  I'm pretty sure she's ok with it.  Come on, let's make more nested posts, it'll be fun!

Sorry man.. the wife calls so i gotta answer
Can't blame you man.  She is hot!

You been stalking my wife dude?  Angry

Wuuut?  Nah man.  You intorduced me to her.  Don't you remember?

Bob, I think I may have over-simplified what I was trying to say about initial coin distribution.  Here's the thing.  Imo for a 2.0 project like Ripple, they might get away with the fact that they have one of the worst distributions out there.  Here's why...

  * Ripple Labs is a for profit company.  So in effect it is in their interest for XRP to go up.

  * We know their identities (devs, execs, etc...), and know that they could get imprisoned for fraud if they do
     any shenanigans.

In Bitcoin's case, it must be very important.  And the fact that Satoshi holds 1m BTC may be a problem.  Why...

  * We do not know who he really is and what he intends to do with his coins. He cannot be held liable for
      anything because he's anonymous.

So I think knowing a person's identity, his intentions and that he can be held liable for fraud has to be given more importance than distribution.  Not saying that distribution isn't important at all.  Because if one dev wants to be anonymous, then distribution must be fair as much as possible to encourage trust in the system.

Edit:  I started a thread about why Satoshi didn't "burn" his coins if he doesn't have any intention in gaining access on them in the future https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1045997.0

Some inputs with be nice.

So maybe we'll see those coins move in the future?

Edit:  For the newbies.  Here's a wiki for "proof of burn" https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Proof_of_burn

Any other projects and their funding you know about?  Please post them.

(I'm going to set this topic to self-moderated to prevent trolls and shills, but I'm now allowing positive and negative feedback to a point.  Please read update below for more info.)

Please note:  Funding is not everything in an altcoin.  The teams behind them matter much more, so it would be wise to visit their website and find out who they are.  It is also advisable to check their output via their source code repository.  Ratings for each can be checked here https://www.coingecko.com/en

Update (06/08/2016):  Removed the platforms/projects with super low volume in the exchanges.  Those that were removed had daily trading volume that stayed only in the hundreds of USD, of which we do not want people buying into because of higher chance of becoming bagholders.  Decent volume and liquidity is a must if an investor wants to get out of a trade due to various reasons.

Positive and negative feedback are now allowed as long as they're not shills and FUD.  Feedback must be articles or blogs from known devs that you might have read about a platform/project, negative or positive.  One example is this one:  http://bitcoinhivemind.com/blog/case-against-augur/.  I'm sure there are many more.  Please post them.

Update (05/18/2017):  Added Augur, Gnosis, Golem and Waves.

14259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the most liquid altcoin? on: May 03, 2015, 12:37:05 AM
Because it would be the network all our banks might use?  As in...  we will have no choice in the future...

Ripple is coming after banks.

Also, if you're comparing the Ripple network with Paypal or Neteller, then it's clear that you have not done your research.  Imagine if all the major crypto exchanges become Ripple gateways, we would have one SUPER EXCHANGE in Ripple.  You hear that?  SUPER MEGA EXCHANGE.  If you thought moving crypto from point A to point B was easy...  Ripple will make it easier.  Assuming all exchanges are Ripple gateways that is....

Banks are give xrp's for free by the millions with a clause that they cant sell before a certain time in lieu to state publicly that they use the Ripple network, not xrp's.
The fast majority of "available" coin have this clause attached including jebs 10 billion stash.

99% of times no xrp is needed you go straight from fiat to bitcoin or whatever you want to change (frequent flyer points, phone credit,.....) Only in the most extreme circumstances  will you need a xrp (exchanging you cats tail with a square hose shoe......)

Lastly if a Bank closes up shop or Ripple is the same thing your stuffed. All is gone, totally different to bitcoin as long as you dont have your bitcoins on an exchange and it closes up. You might as well keep your fiat, banks are far safer than some company you deal with over the net, most likely in a foreign land.

The current price is mega inflated, if not banks would buy like crazy instead of waiting its time to dump.
Educate yourself before trowing away money.

But but what if XRP start go to moon?  Still not buy?
