1441  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The First Chicago Restaurant to Accept Bitcoin on: February 16, 2012, 08:42:45 AM
Portillos is a good idea for the drive through... how do you explain to restaurants how to deal with the hour confirmation delay again?

Bit-Pay confirms transactions for our merchants in 1-3 seconds.  In thousands of transactions we have never seen a double spend.  I'm not saying it won't happen, but the amount of computing power to pull it off is not something you are going to have with you while eating at a restaurant.  And if you tried, I am sure one of 3 things would happen:

1.  you are taken out the back door and promptly beaten
2.  you are asked to pay another way
3.  you are told never to come back again

4. you have spent much more money on computing power than the cost of your lunch

How? it's Windows, it's not a .exe file, it's not a .py file too.
can't you do 'python electrum' ?
Finally, got Electrum run on Windows XP.
Nice!

just for information, did you have to install PyQt, or did it work right away?
1443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info/wallet is the BEST Bitcoin client as-of-date. on: February 16, 2012, 08:32:13 AM
I think the best client is Electrum. It's simple, easy, fast and best of all: it's very easy for me to modify the code to suit my needs. I've modified it to send transactions from any address I want just by having the private key, sending the change to the same address and without needing to import it.

hey, thanks a lot! I appreciate that!
1444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The First Chicago Restaurant to Accept Bitcoin on: February 16, 2012, 05:27:53 AM
Please start a thread for Montreal. I pledge to go eating if a restaurant accept bitcoins.
For me the 2 best selling points to a restaurant are:
New clients: bitcoiners paying with bitcoins
Free publicity: local media will be interested about a restaurant accepting a new currency.

And I'm offering to get their business listed on all of the tons of websites listing businesses that accept bitcoin.

Does anyone have list of websites listing businesses accepting bitcoins?

I think I need to start a thread for that!

Have you guys looked at bitcoin.de ?
Fiat money transfers are person-to-person, while bitcoins are held in escrow by the site.
I believe this is a sensible solution.

What happens if after the fiat person-to-person transfer, the seller claims they haven't received any fiat and the Bitcoins are returned to them?
there is a rating system: https://www.bitcoin.de/en/faq

1447  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can someone please address how vulnerable Mt Gox and Dwolla are to being shutdow on: February 15, 2012, 09:57:24 AM
before the creation of bitcoin exchanges, bitcoins have been traded peer to peer :  http://bitcoin-otc.com
Of course, this is more difficult than using mtgox, but I think people should be prepared for that possibility.

Note for speculators:  If exchanges get shut down, there will be a selling panic.
Such a panic is an excellent investment opportunity for those who can buy coins at low prices.
However, only those who have the possibility to buy and sell elsewhere will be able to use this opportunity.
If you want to buy and sell on bitcoin-otc, you need to setup an account (which requires technical skills) and
to already have some trust ratings. This means that you cannot switch from mtgox to bitcoin-otc instantly.
better get prepared for that...
1448  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: February 14, 2012, 10:40:11 PM
All right, Electrum 0.40 is now officialy released!
get it from here: http://ecdsa.org/electrum/

To use new Qt gui, type:
Code:
  python electrum

If you want to use the old Gtk gui, type:
Code:
  python electrum --gui gtk

It doesn't work for me  Sad

> python electrum
could not import icons_rp.py
generate it with: 'pyrcc4 icons.qrc -o icons_rc.py'

that is is normal.
if you don't know how to generate this file, just wait for the release;
all the dependencies will be included in the package

it would be fantastic if someone could check if Electrum-Qt work under Windows.

Just tested it, python27 with slowaes&pyqt4 installed.

python gui_qt.py

nothing happend, nothing prompted.

Strange.

try to execute the file named 'electrum'
1453  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] thewalletlist.com - store your btc address in the cloud on: February 14, 2012, 04:48:22 PM
please read this: http://ecdsa.org/bitcoin_URIs.html  (the part on aliases)
Thanks for the link. That looks a bit more complicated than what we're doing, but definitely promising. Is there something in particular you wanted to point out?

Yes, I wanted to let you know that there is an ongoing discussion on aliases.
The proposal that I made might not be the final one, but it is already supported by Electrum.
In addition, the developer of Multibit is considering adding support for aliases into his client soon.

Another thing that I wanted to point out is that aliases can be signed.
This adds some level of protection against hijacking.
 - an alias can be signed by a trusted authority. For example, your website could play that role, if you decide to host aliases.
The trusted authority should be reputable and not subject to hacking.
In addition, it may provide various services, such as verification of real-world identity, etc.
 - an alias can be self-signed. This will protect only the users who have seen that alias previously, because their client will detect that the hijacked alias has a bad signature.

By the way, it would be awesome if electrum had support for querying the wallet list!
The current proposal does not allow a website to host aliases from other domains, but we could add this as an option in Electrum if your service is successful.
For addresses that belong to your domain (thewalletlist.com), all you need to do is a minor modification of your API :
Code:
    https://thewalletlist.com/bitcoin.id/<email prefix>
1454  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: February 14, 2012, 04:04:08 PM
I am pleased to announce that  the upcoming release of Electrum (version 0.40) will include a Qt GUI
This is a much needed feature, because gtk applications are difficult to run under Windows.

The new GUI is now fully functional in the git repository, and is being tested.
During that time, it would be fantastic if someone could check if Electrum-Qt work under Windows.

what bug?
oh that was not related to your patch

Now the code is prettier but it doesn't work. I've added 3 lines and made a pull request.

Edit: updated pull request with two fixes.
thanks, I just merged it.

[...] an influential blogger [...] he does know he should have had a backup system in place

I hope that he will be able to recover his coins.
if he is an influential blogger, perhaps he could use his power to educate people about deterministic wallets?
you know, those wallets that can be recovered by a seed, and that you do not need to backup more than once.

As a significant shareholder

please, feel free try and promote alternative clients, and to donate to their developers.
I suggest you have a look at:
*Electrum, a lightweight client: http://ecdsa.org/electrum
*libbitcoin: An alternative bitcoin library (for servers): http://libbitcoin.org
1459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Smart Cards on: February 08, 2012, 04:37:47 PM
Any progress on this? This seems to me to offer the highest practically attainable security. If someone has to steal the card in order for me to lose the coins, it's good enough for me.

in December, slush talked about implementing an Electrum client in a USB stick with a small screen
1460  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: February 08, 2012, 04:33:07 PM
I released version 0.39 today
(sorry for the somewhat inconsistent release schedule; I believed that the following features would take me more time)

Changelog:
* two options have been added, for selecting transaction input and change address: --changeaddr, --fromaddr  [patch by DiThi]
* The status bar displays 'synchronizing' when the client is connected to the server, but is still waiting for history updates. (until now it was not showing this information)
* If the user's server is down, the client remains able to download the list of active servers, by sending queries to a default list.

edit: version 0.39b fixes a bug in the wallet creation procedure
